On some crustose lichens with Wentepohlia from shaded overhangs in coastal Norway

Arthonia arthonioides (syn. nov. A. aspersa ) is reported as new to Scandinavia. Certain forms of it are superficially very similar to Lecanactis latebrarum (= Crocynia hueana ) which is typified and treated for the first time from Norway. Lecanactis abietina is reported to be a mainly coastal species in Norway - contrary to previous records. Lecanactis umbrina is transferred to the genus Schismatomma due to the discovery of apothecia and pycnidia typical of that genus.     

A molecular approach to the phylogeny of Acanthamoeba

Isoenzyme electrophoresis of three different enzyme systems was used to compare 71 strains assigned to the 15 currently recognized species of Acanthamoeba. A phylogenetic (cladistic) analysis of the zymograms indicated an arrangement of strains in 15 distinguishable lineages, but not all corresponding to current taxonomic assignments. Five of the groups corresponded to the recognized species A. castellanii, A. culbertsoni, A. griffini, A. lenticulata and A. royreba. But none of these groups consisted of only strains which had been previously assigned to each respective species. The type-equivalent strains for two species, A. hatchetti and A. tubiashi, were not closely aligned to any other strain and thus are considered to be monotypic. Strains of A. triangularis, A. astronyxis and A. palestinensis occurred together in a single group suggesting possible synonymy; however, on morphologic criteria, the strains assigned to these species are readily distinguishable. Strains assigned to A. polyphaga and A. rhysodes were interspersed throughout the other species groups. The strains of these two species were either misidentified or the species could not be recognized. Two groups previously not recognized as unique formed distinctive clusters which could be considered as new species. The analysis also made it possible to place strains which had previously been identified only to genus into species complexes. These results therefore suggest that previous criteria which have been used to classify Acanthamoeba are not adequate for fully resolving taxa at the species level.

Morphometric and morphological delineation of southern African species of Aethomys (Rodentia: Muridae)

Five species of African rock rats, Aethomys namaquensis, A. granti, A. silindensis, A. nyikae and A. chrysophilus, have to date been recognized in southern Africa. While the first three species are craniometrically well-delineated, morphometric analysis of cytogenetically known and other specimens of A. chrysophilus revealed that it comprises two sympatric, morphologically similar species, the nominate species and the newly recognized A. ineptus. This is in agreement with observations on cranial morphology and earlier investigations involving cytogenetics, protein electrophoresis, and gross sperm and bacular morphology. Contrary to published reports, the Central African A. nyikae does not extend into southern Africa, and the single previous record from eastern Zimbabwe is probably based on a misidentification.

A revision of the encyrtid genus Holcothorax (Hymenoptera)

Abstract Holcothorax Mayr is revised and three Palaearctic species, testaceipes (Ratzeburg), nepticulae Mayr and vellutatus sp.n., are recognized. A key to species is provided and details of host relationships are presented.

A review of the Banchus-group of ichneumon-flies, with a revision of the Australian genus Philogalleria (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae)

ABSTRACT. The composition and relationships of the Banchus genus-group are discussed. A key to the genera is provided and for each genus a diagnosis and notes are given. A new genus and species are described. The genus Philogalleria Cameron is revised: six species (five of them new) are recognized, described and keyed. Rhynchobanchus is newly recorded from Britain and a key is given to its European species.     

Taxonomic review of the genus Symmorphus Wesmael (Hymenoptera: Vespidae: Eumeninae) from the Far East

Far Eastern species of the genus Symmorphus Wesmael are taxonomically reviewed. Fourteen species are recognized. Taxonomic information regarding this group that has been treated fragmentarily is summarized in this study. A revised key is presented, and recognition characteristics and images are supplied for each species.

Synopsis of Adenanthera (Leguminosae-Mimosoideae)

The generic relationship, the palynology and the infrageneric classification of the tropical Asian-Australian-Melanesian genus Adenanthera is discussed. Twelve species are recognized. Adenanthera microsperma and A. tamarindifolia are reinstated. A. kostermansii and A. marina are described as new, and A. malayana is divided in two subspecies, ssp. malayana from Malaya and Sumatra and ssp. andersonii from Borneo. All species are illustrated.

Phylogenetic relationships in the division Lipastromorphi (Coleoptera,Carabidae) of the world as deduced from mitochondrial ND5 gene sequences

Phylogenetic trees have been constructed using mitochondrial ND5 gene sequences of 85 specimens representing 40 species belonging to the division Lipastromorphi of the subtribe Carabina (= genus Carabus s. lat.) of the world. In the trees constructed by several methods, there have been recognized a basal split into two lineages, A and B, which are further divided into 2 (A1 and A2) and 9 (B1-B9) sublineages, respectively. Each sublineage and the clustering of the species in the trees are more or less linked to their geographic distribution. Morphology of the species within A1 or A2 in the lineage A is similar, and the species in most of the sublineages in the lineage B are common in a number of important morphological characters in spite of their long evolutionary histories. Whilst such a morphological stability, considerable morphological changes may be recognized upon or after split of lineages and sublineages. Based on the molecular phylogeny together with the morphological data, the pattern of diversification is discussed.     

A revision of the Peruvian species of Nasa ser. Alatae (Loasaceae)

The Nasa series Alatae is revised for Peru. Species limits in this group are re-investigated on the basis of modern collections, all types and extensive field studies. A total of 12 species are recognized, seven of them- N. dillonii, N. driesslet, N. nubicolorum, N. pascoensis, N. sagasteguii, N, anderssonii and N. urentivelutina -are described as new to science. All new, and two of the previously recognized species are illustrated by line drawings. The species of this group are from Andean habitats, mostly cloud forests, and nearly all of them are narrow endemics.
