Results are presented from Monte Carlo calculations of the electric charge of dust grains in a plasma produced during the slowing down of the radioactive decay products of californium nuclei in neon. The dust grain charging is explained for the first time as being due to the drift of electrons and ions in an external electric field. It is shown that the charges of the grains depend on their coordinates and strongly fluctuate with time. The time-averaged grain charges agree with the experimental data obtained on ordered liquidlike dust structures in a nuclear-track plasma. The time-averaged dust grain charges are used to carry out computer modeling of the formation of dynamic vortex structures observed in experiments. Evidence is obtained of the fact that the electrostatic forces experienced by the dust grains are potential in character.  相似文献

Conditions are considered under which quasi-two-dimensional extended structures are formed consisting of charged dust grains that are suspended in a gravitational field by an external electric field. Formulas are derived that describe the relationships between the parameters of the intergrain interaction potential, the number of dust grains, and the gradients of the linear electric field of the device. A criterion is proposed that determines the onset of a new dust layer in a quasi-two-dimensional dust system.  相似文献

The effect of charged micron-size dust grains (microparticles) on the electric parameters of the positive column of a low-pressure dc glow discharge in neon has been studied experimentally and numerically. Numerical analysis is carried out in the diffusion-drift approximation with allowance for the interaction of dust grains with metastable neon atoms. In a discharge with a dust grain cloud, the longitudinal electric field increases. As the number density of dust grains in an axisymmetric cylindrical dust cloud rises, the growth of the electric field saturates. It is shown that the contribution of metastable atoms to ionization is higher in a discharge with dust grains, in spite of the quenching of metastable atoms on dust grains. The processes of charging of dust grains and the dust cloud are considered. As the number density of dust grains rises, their charge decreases, while the space charge of the dust cloud increases. The results obtained can be used in plasma technologies involving microparticles.  相似文献

Charged particle transport and kinetic processes in a low-temperature dusty plasma are numerically simulated. Dust grains are represented as spheres with a given radius. The self-consistent electric field in the plasma surrounding a charged dust grain is calculated taking into account the perturbations of plasma quasineutrality near the grains. It is shown that applying an external electric field leads to a rearrangement of the plasma space charge and a break of the spherical symmetry of the electron and ion density distributions around the grain. The mutual influence of two identical charged dust grains is considered, and the energy of the electrostatic interaction between the grains is calculated. It is shown that this energy has a minimum at a certain finite distance between the grains.  相似文献

The formation of dusty plasma in the near-surface layer above the illuminated part of the Deimos, the satellite of Mars, due to photoelectric and electrostatic processes is analyzed. Using a physicomathematical model self-consistently describing the densities of photoelectrons and dust grains above the illuminated part of Deimos, the distribution function of photoelectrons near its surface is calculated and the altitude dependences of the electric field, as well as of the number density, charge, and size of dust grains, are determined. It is noted that, due to the lower gravity, substantially larger grains are lifted above the surface of Deimos compared to those lifted above the Moon’s surface. In this case, adhesion, which is believed to significantly hamper the detachment of dust grains from the lunar surface, plays a substantially smaller role on Deimos.  相似文献

A theoretical model is presented that describes the charging of dust grains in the positive plasma column of a stratified glow dc discharge in argon. A one-dimensional self-consistent model is used to obtain axial profiles of the electric field, as well as the electron energy distribution function along the axis of the discharge tube. Radial profiles of the electric field are determined in the ambipolar diffusion approximation. It is assumed that, in the radial direction, the electron distribution function depends only on the total electron energy. Two-dimensional distributions of the discharge plasma parameters are calculated and used to determine the potential and charge of a test dust grain at a certain point within the discharge and the electrostatic forces acting on it. It is shown that the grain charge distribution depends strongly on the nonequilibrium electron distribution function and on the nonuniform distribution of the electric field in a stratified glow discharge. A discussion is presented on the suspension of dust grains, the separation of grains by size in the discharge striations, and a possible mechanism for the onset of vortex dust motion at the edge of a dust cloud.  相似文献

The interaction of charged dust grains with nonlinear vortical structures in the Earth’s atmosphere is analyzed. Certain aspects of the atmosphere?ionosphere interaction, in particular, mechanisms for the appearance of dust grains at ionospheric altitudes, are discussed. It is shown that, at certain altitudes, there are regions in the wavenumber space in which conditions leading to the excitation of acoustic?gravity waves are satisfied. The interaction of nonlinear acoustic?gravity waves with dust grains of meteoric origin at ionospheric altitudes, which leads to the mixing and redistribution of dust grains over the region where vortices exist, is investigated. The possibility of formation of vertical and horizontal dust flows in dusty ionospheric plasma as a result of modulational instability is analyzed. The dynamics of dust grains in dust devils frequently arising in the atmosphere above well-heated surfaces is modeled. The vortical structure of such a dust devil is characterized by a reduced pressure in the center, which facilitates the lifting of small dust grains from the surface. The formulated model is used to calculate the trajectories of dust grains in dust devils with allowance for the influence of the electric field generated in the vortex by colliding dust grains. The calculations show that dust devils play an important role in the transport of dust grains.  相似文献

Summary The phenomenon of pearl chain formation (PCF) is investigated by means of a statistical model using the Monte Carlo method. Fifteen particles (cells) interacting with simple dipole-dipole potential are shown to form chains under the influence of an external field with a threshold potential significantly lower than the two particle estimate. Plasma?dust effects in the martian atmosphere are discussed. A specific feature of the martian atmosphere is the presence of dust grains in a wide range of altitudes. Taking into account the presence of the martian ionosphere and the high conductivity of the medium at lower altitudes, the appearance of plasma systems in the martian atmosphere can be considered quite a common phenomenon. Special attention is paid to dust devils that frequently form in the martian atmosphere and can efficiently lift dust grains. The processes of dust grain charging as a result of triboelectric effect and generation of electric fields in a dust devil are discussed. The dynamics of dust grains in such a vortex is simulated with allowance for their charging and the generated electric field.  相似文献

Using fundamental concepts of hydrodynamics in porous media, we have rederived the Lumpkin-DèJardin-Zimm (LDZ) model for the gel electrophoresis of reptating, infinitely long, worm-like chains, such as DNA. The force balance provides a constraint for evaluating the correlation among the segment-to-field angles of a given molecular conformation. We have used an approximate analytical expression to account for this correlation in order to apply the present derivation to finite chain lengths. The resulting extended LDZ model predicts a nonlinear variation of electrophoretic mobility (mu) with reciprocal chain length (1/Lc) at low electric field strengths, similar to the one observed. The present derivation is valid only at low electric field strengths, and the predictions of the extended LDZ model fit data for a dimensionless electric field strength, E1*, of less than 1.23. An empirically useful criterion for determining the onset of reptation is also described. The present treatment shows how size-exclusion effects can be included in future theories. Models based on reptation alone are shown to predict a discontinuity in the molecular chain length dependence of mobility at a critical molecular size. Such discontinuities are not observed experimentally.  相似文献

The presence of strong electric fields in the sheath region of laboratory complex plasma induces an ion drift and perturbs the field around dust grains. The downstream focusing of ions leads to the formation of oscillatory kind of attractive wake potential which superimpose with the normal Debye-Hückel (DH) potential. The structural properties of complex plasma and diffusion coefficient of dust grains in the presence of such a wake potential have been investigated using Langevin dynamics simulation in the subsonic regime of ion flow. The study reveals that the diffusion of dust grains is strongly affected by the ion flow, so that the diffusion changes its character in the wake potential to the DH potential dominant regimes. The dependence of the diffusion coefficient on the parameters, such as the neutral pressure, dust grain size, ion flow velocity, and Coulomb coupling parameter, have been calculated for the subsonic regime by using the Green-Kubo expression, which is based on the integrated velocity autocorrelation function. It is found that the diffusion and the structural property of the system is intimately connected with the interaction potential and significantly get affected in the presence of ion flow in the subsonic regime.  相似文献

The electric dichroism of 17 homogeneous DNA fragments, ranging in size from 43 to 4362 base-pairs, has been analyzed in high electric fields. The orientation of the small fragments can be described in terms of an induced dipole moment, whereas the large fragments are oriented according to a constant dipole mechanism. In the intermediate size range, DNA orients according to an induced dipole mechanism at low field strengths and according to a constant dipole mechanism at high field strengths. From these observations we propose an orientation mechanism with a saturating induced dipole. The induced dipole observed at low field strengths is saturated at a field strength Eo within a transition range Em to give a constant dipole moment at high field strengths. These parameters together with the polarizability and the limit reduced dichroism are evaluated by a least-squares analysis of the experimental data. Eo and Em are found to decrease with increasing chain length from Eo approximately 40 kV/cm (Em approximately 14 kV/cm) at 65 base-pairs to 10 kV/cm (6 kV/cm) at 194 base-pairs. The polarizability is found to increase with the square of the chain length, whereas the saturated dipole increases with chain length N at low N and goes to a limit value at high N. The temperature dependence of the orientation parameters is found to be very small. The values obtained for the limit dichroism are between -1.0 and -1.3 for chain lengths between 60 and 1000 base-pairs, whereas values around -1.4 are observed at chain lengths greater than 1000 base-pairs. These data indicate that electric fields extend the contour of DNA strands at high chain lengths from a weakly bent to a more linear form. The variations of the limit dichroism observed for short fragments suggest sequence-dependent differences in the secondary structure of the helix. The experimental results are compared with numerical calculations based on simple polyelectrolyte models. For short fragments the magnitude of several electrochemical parameters can be adequately explained by a polarization of the ion cloud around the DNA molecules. However, these polyelectrolyte models do not adequately describe the observed chain length dependence of the orientation phenomena.  相似文献

The geometry and dynamics of plasma?dust structures in a longitudinal magnetic field is studied experimentally. The structures are formed in a glow-discharge trap created in the double electric layer produced as a result of discharge narrowing by means of a dielectric insert introduced in the discharge tube. Studies of structures formed in the new type of glow-discharge trap are of interest from the standpoint of future experiments with complex plasmas in superstrong magnetic fields in which the dust component is magnetized. Different types of dielectric inserts were used: conical and plane ones with symmetric and asymmetric apertures. Conditions for the existence of stable dust structures are determined for dust grains of different density and different dispersity. According to the experimental results, the angular velocity of dust rotation is ≥10 s–1, which is the fastest type of dust motion for all types of discharges in a magnetic field. The rotation is interpreted by analyzing the dynamics of individual dust grains.  相似文献

In this research, the numerical simulation of a soft polymer micro actuator performance has been investigated using the dissipative particle dynamics method in electro-osmotic flow. Effective factors including electro-osmotic flow and polymer chain parameters have been studied. First of all, considering a wide range of electro-osmotic parameters, the validation of analytical results is carried out in a simple micro channel. The electric field and zeta potential changes are linearly related to the flow rate, and the kh parameter behaves nonlinearly to around the kh?=?10. In the following, a convergent–divergent channel is used for the soft micro actuator simulation in which a polymer chain as a heart of actuation is embedded in the middle. As the main control parameter, the direction of the electric field is changed every 4?s, and it leads to a reciprocating motion. The numerical results indicate that the displacement of the soft polymer chain will be increased by enhancing the electric field, the number of beads, decreasing the harmonic bond coefficient and also exposing more length of a polymer chain in front of fluid flow. The results of this study may be useful for some future applications such as artificial fibres and muscles.  相似文献

The study examines the relationship between electric field-induced conductivity and permeability changes in a biological membrane (electroporation) and the amplitude-duration parameters of the externally applied electric field. These reversible changes were characterized in giant photosynthetic membrane vesicles by means of the calibrated response of an intrinsic voltage-sensitive optical probe (electrophotoluminescence) and by the uptake studies of dextran-FITC fluorescent probes of different molecular weights. We quantitatively monitored electric field-induced conductivity changes by translating the electrophotoluminescence changes into conductivity changes. This was carried out by measuring the attenuation of the electrophotoluminescent signal after the addition of known amounts of gramicidin. The results demonstrate that electroporation involves the reversible formation of discrete holes in the membrane having radii <5.8 nm. The total area of the electric field-induced holes was 0.075% of the total surface of the vesicle. The formation of the electropores was affected differently by the electric field strength than by its duration. Increase in electric field strength caused increase in the total area of the vesicle that undergoes electroporation. Increase in the duration of the electric field increases the area of single electropores. Each of the two electric parameters can be rate limiting for the dynamics of electropore formation. These results are in accordance with the model of electroporation based on electric field-induced expansion of transient aqueous holes.  相似文献

The formation of protoplast chains in suspensions of isolated pea (Pisum sativum cv Ran 1) mesophyll protoplasts induced by electric fields was studied. The chain formation induced by a sine-wave field (2 V, peak to peak; 500-0.1 kHz) was compared to that induced by an alternating pulse field (1 V, amplitude; 0.1-0.4 kHz). An increased number of dielectrophoretically paired protoplasts, formation of protoplast chains in the presence of CaCl2 up to 5 mm, and protoplast fusion in the presence of 3 mm CaCl2 were found when the pulse field was applied. The present results suggest the possibility of electrically induced protoplast fusion at cation concentrations that prevent fusion when sine-wave fields are applied.  相似文献

The structures of B-form and A-form DNA are studied in 0–70 and 70–80% ethanol solutions, respectively, in an electric field, using linear dichroism. The limiting reduced linear dichroism data of B-form DNA are chain length dependent in 0% ethanol solution. However, there is no such chain length dependence of the limiting reduced linear dichroism of the A-form. Our reslts also suggest that (1) the transition moments at 260 nm lie within the plaxe of the DNA bases, (2) the two allomorphs (A and B forms) of the long chain DNA in solution in the electric field are like the respective classica forms.  相似文献

Alternating and diblock polyampholytes confined in a slit with and without an electric field have been simulated by the molecular dynamics method with a Langevin thermostat. It is shown that the slit has a strong effect on the properties of the polyampholyte. The effect is stronger when the electric field is weak, or the temperature is not too high. When a polyampholyte chain moves close to the slit wall, its radius of gyration perpendicular to the wall becomes smaller but that parallel to the wall becomes larger. Owing to the confinement of the slit, the polyampholyte chain closer to the slit wall tends to lie on the wall and becomes more flat. The width of the slit has only a little influence on the properties of solutions near the slit wall, values of several physical statistics are very close with different widths. However, when the electric field strength is strong enough in a narrow slit, the obtained properties obviously differ.  相似文献
