Two studies were conducted to examine the role of sex hormones in ultrasound production by female hamsters. Ovariectomized hamsters were treated with estradiol benzoate (EB), testosterone propionate (TP), progesterone (P), estradiol plus progesterone (EB + P), testosterone plus progesterone (TP+P), or oil vehicle. Rates of ultrasound production by these females were observed in response to brief male-female contact, and during exposure to synthetic ultrasounds. Maximal rates of ultrasound production required EB + P or TP+P replacement therapy. Intermediate call rates were stimulated by EB and TP individually, whereas P alone had no significant effect. These results support the hypothesis that ovarian estrogens and progesterone control proceptive as well as receptive behaviors in female hamsters.  相似文献

Rates of ultrasound production and copulatory behavior were observed in castrated male hamsters maintained on 100 micrograms/day of injected testosterone propionate (TP). Groups matched on their initial levels of behavior received either continued treatment with TP alone, or TP together with 6 mg/day injections of the aromatase inhibitor 1,4,6-androstatriene-3,17-dione (ATD). Testing at 11-15 days after the start of these treatments revealed deficits in the sexual behaviors of the subjects in the latter group. Specifically, these males showed lower rates of ultrasound production and intromission during, as opposed to before, treatment with ATD. These results support previous work suggesting that aromatization plays significant roles in the mediation of androgenic effects on both the courtship and copulatory behaviors of male hamsters.  相似文献

Male and female hamsters differ in the stimulus control of the ultrasounds they produce during courtship and mating. In particular, untreated males show greater increases in ultrasound rate after exposure to stimulus females than after contact with other males. Conversely, estrous females are more responsive to stimulus males than females. This sex difference reflects both organizational and activational effects of gonadal hormones. Thus, responses to early castration or treatment with testosterone propionate (TP), estradiol benzoate (EB), or dihydrotestosterone propionate suggest that the development of male-like patterns of ultrasound production is facilitated by perinatal exposure to aromatizable androgen. However, even neonatally feminized subjects will show male-like calling if tested during adult treatment with TP. In contrast, the same subjects respond like naturally estrous females during adult treatment with EB plus progesterone (P). The contrasting responses of neonatally feminized subjects to later TP and EB + P treatments suggest that female hamsters retain a greater capacity for heterotypical patterns of ultrasound production than do males. This obviously differs from the common observation of greater "bipotentiality" for mating behavior in males. In turn, this suggests that the mechanisms controlling sexual bipotentiality are specific to their target behaviors, yielding distinct patterns of hormonal control for at least ultrasound production and lordosis.  相似文献

If a female mates with a male of a closely related species, her fitness is likely to decline. Consequently, females may develop behavioral mechanisms to avoid mating with heterospecific males. In some species, one such mechanism is for adult females to learn to discriminate against heterospecific males after exposure to such males. We have previously shown that adult, female Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) learn to discriminate against male Turkish hamsters (Mesocricetus brandti) after exposure to a single heterospecific male during 8 days across a wire-mesh barrier. Here we repeated that experiment but this time we exposed female Turkish hamsters to a male Syrian hamster for 8 days and then measured sexual and aggressive behaviors towards that heterospecific male and towards a conspecific male. In contrast to female Syrian hamsters, female Turkish hamsters did not differ in their latency to go into lordosis or in any measure of aggression towards either type of male. Female Turkish hamsters spent less time in lordosis with the heterospecific male, but the percentage of trials in which females copulated with conspecific and heterospecific males did not differ. When comparing females from both species that had been exposed to a heterospecific male for 8days, female Syrian hamsters copulated less and were more aggressive towards the heterospecific male compared to the behavior of female Turkish hamsters. We discuss how this asymmetric response between females of the two species may be due to the much larger geographical range of Turkish hamsters compared to Syrian hamsters.  相似文献

The maintenance of females in gender dimorphic populations requires that they have a fitness advantage to compensate for their loss of male reproductive function. We assess whether inbreeding avoidance provides this advantage in two subdioecious Wurmbea dioica populations by estimating seed production, outcrossing rates and inbreeding depression. Fruiting males produced less than half as many seeds as females, owing to low outcrossing rates and early acting inbreeding depression. Inbreeding coefficients of fruiting males demonstrated that progeny were more inbred than their parents, implying that few selfed progeny reach maturity, as confirmed by inbreeding depression estimates that exceeded 0.85. In a glasshouse experiment, open-pollinated females exhibited a fitness advantage of 3.7 relative to fruiting males, but when we increased fruiting male outcrossing rate, female advantage was only 1.4. This reduced advantage is insufficient to maintain females if nuclear genes control sex. Thus, inbreeding avoidance could maintain females at high frequencies, although this is contingent upon high frequencies of fruiting males, which can be altered by environmentally determined gender plasticity.  相似文献

Immune function is better in females than in males of many vertebrate species, and this dimorphism has been attributed to the presence of immunosuppressive androgens in males. We investigated the influence of sex steroid hormones on immune function in male and female Siberian hamsters. Previous studies indicated that immune function was impaired in male and female hamsters housed under short-day photoperiods when androgen and estrogen concentrations were virtually undetectable. In experiment 1, animals were gonadally intact, gonadectomized (gx), or gx with hormone replacement. Females exhibited the expected increase in antibody production over males, independent of hormone treatment condition, whereas male and female gx animals exhibited decreased lymphocyte proliferation to the T cell mitogen, phytohemagglutinin (PHA) compared with intact animals, and this effect was reversed in gx hamsters following testosterone and estradiol treatment, respectively. In experiment 2, testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, and estradiol all enhanced cell-mediated immunity in vitro, suggesting that sex steroid hormones may be enhancing immune function through direct actions on immune cells. In experiment 3, an acute mitogen challenge of lipopolysaccharide significantly suppressed lymphocyte proliferation to PHA in intact males but not females, suggesting that males may be less reactive to a subsequent mitogenic challenge than females. Contrary to evidence in many species such as rats, mice, and humans, these data suggest that sex steroid hormones enhance immunity in both male and female Siberian hamsters.  相似文献

A brief exposure to social defeat in male Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) leads to profound changes in the subsequent agonistic behavior exhibited by the defeated animals. Following defeat in the home cage of an aggressive conspecific, male hamsters will subsequently fail to defend their home territory even if the intruder is a smaller, nonaggressive male. This phenomenon has been called conditioned defeat. In Experiment 1, we examined the duration of conditioned defeat by repeatedly testing (every 3-5 days) defeated hamsters with a nonaggressive intruder. We found that conditioned defeat occurs in all defeated male hamsters and persists for a prolonged period of time (at least 33 days) in the majority of male hamsters tested despite the fact that these animals are never attacked by the nonaggressive intruders. In Experiment 2, we examined whether conditioned defeat could be induced in female Syrian hamsters. While conditioned defeat occurred in some females, they displayed only low levels of submissive/defensive behavior and, in contrast to males, the conditioned defeat response did not persist beyond the first test. These results suggest that in male hamsters conditioned defeat is a profound, persistent behavioral change characterized by a total absence of territorial aggression and by the frequent display of submissive and defensive behaviors. Conversely, social defeat in female hamsters does not appear to induce long-term behavioral changes. Finally, in Experiment 3, we determined that plasma adrenocorticotropin-like immunoreactivity increases in females following social defeat in a manner similar to that seen in males, suggesting that the disparate behavioral reactions of males and females are not due to sex differences in the release of, or response to, plasma adrenocorticotropin.  相似文献

A hamster was inoculated with the SI-1 strain of Borrelia burgdorferi and subsequently served as a host to larval Ixodes scapularis Say. Approximately 68% of the nymphs resulting from the fed larvae were infected. Nymphs from this group were fed on uninfected hamsters, and 3 of 4 males and 6 of 6 females became infected. The infected hamsters were allowed to mate with uninfected partners to test for venereal transmission. Six infected females were mated with 6 uninfected males, whereas 3 infected males were mated with 6 uninfected females. None of the uninfected hamsters became infected after mating. Two protocols were used to determine if transplacental transmission of B. burgdorferi occurred. One group included 6 nonpregnant infected females that were subsequently mated and became pregnant. Three of the females were allowed to carry to full term, whereas the other 3 were killed prior to parturition. All fetuses and offspring were negative for B. burgdorferi based on cultures and monoclonal antibody assays. Another group of 6 females was infected via tick bite after becoming pregnant; those females were allowed to carry fetuses to birth and all were negative. Attempts at contact transmission of B. burgdorferi from 2 infected females to 2 uninfected male and 2 uninfected female hamsters and from 2 infected males to 2 uninfected male and uninfected female hamsters via urine or feces failed.  相似文献

Sex-influenced population kinetics of Leishmania donovani in hamsters   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Susceptibility of animals to infections depends upon various factors including sex of the host which plays a pivotal role. The intake of L. donovani was investigated in male and female hamsters as also in gonadectomized and hormone (sex) treated animals. Male hamsters developed more parasites (55/100 cell nuclei) than their female counterparts (22/100 cell nuclei). The hamsters receiving testosterone (250 micrograms/animal for 7 days) exogenously (im) had enhanced parasitic count (1.1-fold in male and 1.5-fold in females with respect to their respective controls). Administration of estradiol (3 micrograms/animal for 3 days) suppressed the infection in males by 2.5-fold and in female by 1.94-fold. Castration lowered the parasite 'in take' while ovarectomy promoted infection. In these (gonadectomized) animals the administration of testosterone in males restored parasite load while the estradiol therapy in females suppressed the infection. The results suggest a definite modulatory role of sex hormone, in the susceptibility of hamsters to L. donovani infection.  相似文献

The rates of adenine uptake and incorporation into nucleic acids by adult male and female Schistosoma mansoni were determined during periods of up to 10 days in vitro, and comparisons were made between paired and separated worms. Adenine uptake by separated males and females exceeded that exhibited by equivalent paired worms. The rate of incorporation of adenine into nucleic acids was higher in separated females than in paired females. In contrast, the state of pairing had little effect on adenine incorporation by male S. mansoni. There was no correlation between rates of adenine uptake and incorporation and the reproductive activity of S. mansoni adults in vitro. Uptake and incorporation rates appeared to reflect the changing somatic requirements of both male and female worms.  相似文献

The sources of cues necessary for elicitation of androgen surges and sexual behavior in male golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) were investigated. Circulating androgen levels were measured in males after interactions with other males or several types of estrous females: intact females, vaginectomized females, or vaginectomized females scented with vaginal secretions. All groups of males that interacted with estrous females demonstrated significant elevations in androgens whereas those that interacted with other males did not. Thus, the presence of vaginal secretions is not necessary for the elicitation of androgen surges in sexually experienced male hamsters. Individual differences in sexual performance were not correlated with the degree of change in androgen levels, suggesting that such hormonal responses are not graded but are all-or-none. Housing males in isolation from females did not alter either baseline androgen levels or the magnitude of androgen responses caused by interactions with females.  相似文献

During copulation, male Isophya kraussi transfer a large nuptial gift to females. In this study, we hypothesized that the energy content of spermatophores should meet the energy requirements of both body maintenance and egg production of females. We measured the field metabolic rate of male and female I. kraussi using the doubly labeled water method and the energy content of spermatophores and male bodies with microbomb calorimetry. The energy content of male nuptial gifts averaged 0.66+/-0.09 kJ, approximately 20% of the total body energy content of male I. kraussi (3.24+/-0.26 kJ). Field metabolic rates averaged 0.41+/-0.17 kJ d(-1) (n = 8) for males and 0.30+/-0.15 kJ d(-1) (n = 5) for female I. kraussi. Thus, the energy content of spermatophores exceeded the daily energy requirements of existence in male I. kraussi. A single nuptial gift provides for all energy requirements of females for 1 or 2 d, depending on their activity, egg production, and ambient temperature. Because the shortest known remating interval of female katydids varies between 1 and 3 d, female I. kraussi could theoretically exist exclusively on spermatophores to meet their nutritional requirements.  相似文献

Through 100 passages, the human hookworm Necator americanus was adapted to the golden hamster, Mesocricetus auratus, without either the requirement for exogenous steroids or other immunosuppressive agents, nor the requirement to infect hamsters as pups. Adult N. americanus recovered from infected hamsters were morphologically similar to those from infected humans in Sichuan Province, China, although they were smaller and the females produced fewer eggs. The natural history and kinetics of N. americanus infection was different in female and male hamsters. Female hamsters supported low intensity infections that lasted for approximately two months. In contrast, the peak intensity of infection in male hamsters was high, but this situation lasted less than for 4 weeks at which time many of the hookworms were expelled. However, even after the major parasite expulsion, the total number of hookworms consistently remained higher in chronically infected male hamsters compared with female hamsters. The hamster model of N. americanus is potentially useful for studying the development of new anthelminthic drugs and vaccines.  相似文献

Sexual differences and the effects of orchidectomy were determined for porphyrin and melatonin concentrations and for the activities of the enzymes N-acetyltransferase and hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase, which synthesize melatonin from serotonin, in the Harderian glands of the Syrian hamster. Porphyrin concentrations in intact males were about 1/400th those of intact females. Castration for 1 week increased male Harderian porphyrin concentrations 10-fold; by 3 weeks, castrated male porphyrin levels were 140 times those of control values. N-Acetyltransferase activity in intact male Harderian glands was about 4 times that of females. Castration led to a drop in N-acetyltransferase activity to female levels within 2 weeks. Hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase activity was 7 times higher in females than in males and castration had no effect on male Harderian hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase activity. Neither gender nor castration influenced Harderian melatonin concentrations. Soluble proteins in Harderian glands from male and female hamsters and from male hamsters castrated for 1 and 4 weeks were examined by sodium dodecyl sulfate--polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The gel profiles revealed several differences among the protein distribution in male and female gland lysates. Orchidectomy led to a female protein pattern within 4 weeks.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in day length enhance or suppress components of immune function in individuals of several mammalian species. Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus) exhibit multiple changes in neuroendocrine, reproductive, and immune function after exposure to short days. The manner in which these changes are integrated into the host response to pathogens is not well understood. The present experiments tested the hypothesis that short-day changes in immune function alter the pathogenesis of septic shock and survival after challenge with endotoxin. Male and female Siberian hamsters raised in long-day photoperiods were transferred as adults to short days or remained in their natal photoperiod. Six to 8 weeks later, hamsters were injected i.p. with 0, 1, 2.5, 10, 25, or 50 mg/kg bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (the biologically active constituent of endotoxin), and survival was monitored for 96 h. Short days significantly improved survival of male hamsters treated with 10 or 25 mg/kg LPS and improved survival in females treated with 50 mg/kg LPS. Transfer from long to short days shifted the LD50 in males by approximately 90%, from 5.3 to 9.9 mg/kg, and in females from 11.1 to 15.0 mg/kg (+35%). Long-day females were more resistant than were males to lethal endotoxemia. In vitro production of the proinflammatory cytokine TNFalpha in response to LPS stimulation was significantly lower in macrophages extracted from short-day relative to long-day hamsters, as were circulating concentrations of TNFalpha in vivo after i.p. administration of LPS, suggesting that diminished cytokine responses to LPS in short days may mitigate the lethality of endotoxemia. Adaptation to short days induces changes in immune parameters that affect survival in the face of immune challenges.  相似文献

Although generation of ultrasound during courtship has been reported for an increasing number of moth species, the effect of the ultrasound on mating remains uncertain in many cases because of a lack of proper verification. Here we report that males of the yellow peach moth Conogethes punctiferalis (Crambidae) sexually communicate with females by emitting loud ultrasound (103 dB peak equivalent sound pressure level at 1 cm; dominant frequency 82 kHz) before attempting copulation. The male ultrasound consists of consecutive clicks (pulses) in the early phase of the sound train and consecutive pulses (burst) in the late phase. When females were deafened by puncturing the abdominal tympanic membranes, copulation never occurred. We found that deafened females did not assume the wing-raising posture, which, for normal pairs, always precedes successful copulation. Our findings indicate that male courtship ultrasound evokes wing-raising as an acceptance behavior from females, which in turn evokes a copulation attempt by a male.  相似文献

The single-gene mutation tau in the Syrian hamster shortens the circadian period by about 20% in the homozygous mutant and simultaneously increases the mass-specific metabolic rate by about 20%. Both effects might be expected to lead to a change in longevity. To test such expectations, the life span of male and female hamsters from three genotypes (wild-type, heterozygous, and homozygous tau mutants, all derived from heterozygote crosses to randomize the genetic background) was recorded in constant darkness. Male hamsters lived significantly longer than females: the overall average life span was 96.9 weeks (SE = 2.5, n = 118) for males and 82.0 weeks (SE = 2.1, n = 99) for females. To our surprise, male and female homozygous mutant hamsters lived significantly longer rather than shorter compared to wild-types. For males, the difference between the two genotypes was on average 14%; for females, the difference was 16%. The mortality rate of wild-type males was significantly different from that of homozygous tau males but not different from that of heterozygotes. Overall, survival of wild-type females was statistically distinguishable from both heterozygous and homozygous mutant females. Male and female wild-type hamsters were heavier than homozygote mutants throughout the entire life span, and heterozygous mutants had intermediate weights. There was no correlation between body mass and life span, and the causes of the extended life span in tau mutant hamsters remain unresolved.  相似文献

The Syrian golden hamster is a frequently used model to study cholesterol and bile acid metabolism as well as cholesterol-induced cholelithiasis. However, diet-induced gallstones seem limited to young male hamsters of certain strains that develop depressed cholate/chenodeoxycholate bile acid ratios. To further elucidate gender and age specific aspects of cholesterol and bile acid metabolism, i.e. a possible age-related bile acid/gallstone relationship, plasma and biliary lipids and bile acid composition were analyzed in male and female hamsters under various physiological conditions of age and diet, the latter formulated with and without dietary cholesterol. During normal development (no cholesterol challenge) the percentage of cholic acid decreased while chenodeoxycholate increased, the shift being more pronounced in males. Furthermore, female hamsters had higher total plasma cholesterol than in males, while hepatic and biliary lipids did not differ. When challenged with excessive dietary cholesterol, female hamsters again developed significantly higher total plasma and hepatic cholesterol concentrations. Biliary lipids and cholesterol gallstone incidence revealed a significant gender effect with male hamsters developing a higher lithogenic index and more gallstones (cholesterol and pigment stones) than females. Female hamsters revealed a lower percentage of chenodeoxycholate and a higher percentage of cholate resulting in a more protective, higher cholate/cheno ratio (1.5 +/- 1.0) than in males (1.0 +/- 0.2). In summary, the bile acid pattern in developing and cholesterol-fed hamsters renders females less susceptible to gallstones, in part because they maintain more favorable biliary lipid and bile acid profiles, characterized by lower molar percentages of biliary cholesterol and chenodeoxycholate.  相似文献

Transfer of adult Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus) from long (16 h light and 8 h dark, 16L:8D) to short (8L:16D) daily photoperiods induces an involution of the gonads and a cessation of reproductive behavior 8 to 10 weeks later. However, when male and female long-day hamsters were paired on transfer to short photoperiods, the males' gonads did not undergo the typical short-day response. Similarly, when male long-day hamsters were paired with refractory females (i.e., females housed in short photoperiods for at least 28 weeks so that they became unresponsive to short photoperiods), the response of the males' reproductive system to short photoperiods also was attenuated. Thus, social cues can override or delay the effects of photoperiod on the testes of this species. These results suggest that the inhibitory effects of long durations of melatonin secretion (in response to short photoperiods) on the male hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis may be attenuated by social cues such as contact with the opposite sex.  相似文献
