Field experiments showed that the treatment of winter barley with microbial metabolites produced by a Bacillus subtilis strain led to increased yields in spite of a remaining mildew infection. Disease severity/yield relations obtained on a single tiller basis for either mildew infection at EC 75 or area under disease progress curve (AUDPC) were negatively correlated for untreated plants (R2= 89%, 94%) while this relation did not exist for inducer-treated ones (R2= 10%, 13%). Despite an increasing infection density. yields of main tillers of inducertreated plants were not decreased. On the other hand area under green leaf area curve (AUGLAC) showed a higher correlation with grain yield (R2= 89%) of inducer-treated plants. Possible explanations for the mitigated damaging effect of powdery mildew were expected in carbohydrate metabolism. especially carbohydrate formation and translocation. Assimilation rates of flag leaves of inducer-treated barley with similar infection densities to those of untreated plants were increased over a prolonged period and even exceeded those of non infected ones. In inducer-treated plants the export of 14CO2 from flag leaves into ears remained unimpaired by mildew infection and the allocation of assimilates to grains was highest at late stages of grain filling. Obviously plants were stimulated by inducer treatments to compensate for the damaging effect of powdery mildew and to tolerate mildew infection without yield loss.  相似文献

In West-Europe, intensive cereal management uses plant growth regulators (PGRs) especially for wheat. A green-house experiment compared the effects of two PGRs on flag leaf characteristics and yield of winter wheat. Chlormequat chloride + choline chloride (CCC) and chlormequat chloride + choline chloride + imazaquin (CCC+I) were applied to winter wheat at growth stage 5 (Feekes Large scale). CCC and CCC+I significantly increased flag leaf surface area at anthesis. Both treatments also enhanced chlorophyll content of the main stem flag leaf. The grain filling period was extended with PGR application by 2 days. CCC and CCC+I significantly increased net CO2 assimilation rates during the flag leaf life. No effects of PGR spraying were observed on the pattern of 14C labelled assimilate distribution. Increased grain yield was due to the increase in average grain weight. The results indicate that PGR treatments increased flag leaf contribution to grain filling. The addition of imazaquin (I) to chlormequat (CCC) improved the effects of CCC.  相似文献

When kinetin was applied to the source organ (flag leaf) of rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. Ratna), foliar senescence was delayed and grain yield per plant (as evidenced by grain weight, grain/straw weight ratio and 1,000 grain growth) was increased through the increase of sink activity (increase in dry weight of the grains/plant), duration of sink capacity as well as photosynthetic ability of the glumes (as determined by the chlorophyll content of the glumes of the developing grains). However, application of kinetin to the sink organs (fruits), promoted senescence of the source but increased the yield by increasing the sink capacity and 1,000 grain growth mostly at the earlier stage of reproductive development. Lower sterility percentage was associated with higher grain yield of the plant by kinetin treatments. ABA applied either to the source or the sink promoted leaf senescence and reduced the grain yield by reducing the sink activity, harvest index, sink capacity duration and increasing the sterility percentage. Thousand grain dry weight at harvest did not vary significantly amongst the treatments. It was concluded that nutrient drainage was associated with the correlative influence of fruit on the monocarpic senescence of rice plant and that a competetion for differential allocation of cytokinin and ABA in the source and sink organs initiates this senescence syndrome.  相似文献

Phloem unloading in transition sink leaves of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) was analyzed by quantitative autoradiography. Detectable levels of labeled photoassimilates entered sink leaves approx. 1 h after source leaves were provided with 14CO2. Samples of tissue were removed from sink leaves when label was first detected and further samples were taken at the end of an experimental phloem-unloading period. The amount of label in veins and in surrounding cells was determined by microdensitometry of autoradiographs using a microspectrophotometer. Photoassimilate unloaded from first-, second-and third-order veins but not from smaller veins. Import termination in individual veins was gradual. Import by the sink leaf was completely inhibited by exposing the sink leaf to anaerobic conditions, by placing the entire plant in the cold, or by steam-girdling the sink-leaf petiole. Phloem unloading was completely inhibited by cold; however, phloem unloading continued when the sink-leaf petiole was steam girdled or when the sink leaf was exposed to a N2 atmosphere. Compartmental efflux-analysis indicated that only a small percentage of labeled nutrients was present in the free space after unloading from sink-leaf veins in a N2 atmosphere. The results are consistent with passive symplastic transfer of photoassimilates from phloem to surrounding cells.Symbol VI radio of 14C in veins and interveinal tissue  相似文献

Net photosynthetic rate (P N) of ear and flag leaf during grain filling stage and grain yield of plants with non-darkened or darkened flag leaf or darkened ear were examined in two different CO2 concentrations: ambient (AC) and AC+200 μmol mol−1 (EC). Ear showed much higher enhancement (56 %) of P N than flag leaf (23 %) under EC. Moreover, CO2 enrichment shortened the photosynthetic duration of flag leaf relative to ear. In this way the ratio of ear to flag leaf contribution to grain yield increased from 1.18 (AC) to 1.39 (EC).  相似文献

Morphological, anatomical, biochemical and physiological traits of sun and shade leaves of adult Quercus ilex, Phillyrea latifolia and Pistacia lentiscus shrub species co-occurring in the Mediterranean maquis at Castelporziano (Latium) were studied. Fully expanded sun leaves had 47% (mean of the three species) greater leaf mass area (LMA) and 31% lower specific leaf area (SLA) than shade leaves. Palisade parenchyma thickness contributed on an average 42% to the total leaf thickness, spongy layer 43%, upper epidermal cells 5%, and upper cuticle thickness 3%. Stomatal size was greater in sun (25.5 μm) than in shade leaves (23.6 μm). Total chlorophyll content per fresh mass was 71% greater in shade than in sun leaves, and nitrogen content was the highest in sun (13.7 mg g−1) than in shade leaves (11.8 mg g−1). Difference of net photosynthetic rates (P N) between sun and shade leaves was 97% (mean of the three species). The plasticity index (sensu Valladares et al., New Phytol 148:79–91, 2000a) was the highest for physiological leaf traits (0.86) than for morphological, anatomical and biochemical ones. Q. ilex had the highest plasticity index of morphological, anatomical and physiological leaf traits (0.37, 0.28 and 0.71, respectively) that might explain its wider ecological distribution. The higher leaf plasticity of Q. ilex might be advantageous in response to varying environmental conditions, including global change.  相似文献

Fast growth and early development in barley are used in breeding programmes to improve the water use efficiency and transpiration efficiency of this crop in Mediterranean conditions. Here, we examine the use of several simple traits based on the structure and stable isotope composition of seedling leaves to assess differences in early vigour, phenology and grain yield, and also the interaction with low temperatures in barley. A set of 260 F8 lines of two-row barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) derived from the cross of Tadmor and WI 2291 were cultivated in two locations in northwest Syria. Total chlorophyll content on an area basis (SPAD) and specific leaf dry weight (SLDW) were measured in recently fully expanded intact leaves of seedlings. Total leaf area and total dry weight per seedling were evaluated in the same seedlings. The stable isotope compositions of carbon and nitrogen (δ13C and δ15N, respectively) were analyzed in the same leaves on a subset of 75 genotypes. Number of days from planting to heading and grain yield were recorded at both sites. The grain yield measured at both locations was positively correlated with the SPAD value of seedlings, but showed no relationship with SLDW. Days to heading was negatively correlated with SPAD values. Regarding early vigour, a negative relationship between the SLDW and the total leaf area of seedlings was observed. However, no relationship between the δ13C of seedlings and early vigour was observed, except when only the genotypes most resistant to low temperatures (i.e. showing the highest SPAD values) were considered. This subset of genotypes showed negative relationships between δ13C and either total leaf area or total dry weight. In addition, δ15N was negatively correlated with SPAD only within the high-SPAD genotypes. This suggests that within the genotypes resistant to low temperatures, those with higher chlorophyll content assimilate more nitrogen from nitrate.  相似文献

Crop growth largely depends on radiation. Radiation is the main impetus for photosynthesis and movement of photosynthates from source to sink. Therefore, identification of the optimum sowing windows and suitable cultivars for efficient utilization of radiation is of prime importance. A field study was conducted in red clay soil during 2014 and 2015 Kharif season and the treatments consisted of three genotypes and three sowing windows by using randomized complete block design with three replications. The effect of genotypes and sowing windows was found significant with respect to number of trifoliate leaves, leaf area ratio, dry matter production, grain numbers, pod length, test weight, grain yield, and stover yield of guar during 2014 as compared to 2015 sown crop. Statistically significant plant height, number of trifoliate leaves, number of branches, leaf area ratio, absolute growth rate, leaf area index, dry matter, grain number, pod length, grain yield, stover yield and a higher cumulative radiation interception were recorded with 15th August sown crop as compared to other sowing windows. The plant height, number of trifoliate leaves, number of branches, leaf area ratio, absolute growth rate, leaf area index, dry matter, grain number, pod length, grain yield, stover yield and maximum cumulative interception of radiation were significant with RGC-1003 as compared to RGC-936 and HG-365. It is observed that the incident PAR to dry matter accumulation conversion efficiency was varied with cultivars and different sowing windows which ranges from 0.74 g MJ−1 to 0.79 g MJ−1.  相似文献

Purpose of this study was to investigate different responses of two wheat genotypes (Triticum aestivum L.) from the wet and dry climate regions to exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) application under well-watered and water-stressed conditions. Exogenous ABA was applied to the leaves by spraying and changes in dry matter accumulation and allocation, endogenous ABA content and carbon isotope ratio (δ13C) were monitored. The ABA application significantly decreased stem height, total biomass, total leaf area, total grain mass and leaf area/mass ratio, and significantly increased root/aboveground biomass ratio, endogenous ABA content and δ13C under well-watered and water-stressed conditions. Compared with the wet climate genotype, the dry climate genotype was more responsive to exogenous ABA application, resulting in lower stem height, total biomass, total leaf area, total grain mass and leaf area/mass ratio, and higher root/aboveground biomass ratio, endogenous ABA content and δ13C under all experimental treatments. The research was supported by the Program of “100 Distinguished Young Scientists” and “ Knowledge Innovation Engineering” of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (No. KSCX2-SW-115).  相似文献

A field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of foliar application of a synthetic cytokinin (BAP) on source and sink strength of four different six-rowed barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivars. Different spraying treatments consisting of spraying on whole plant, spraying only on leaves and spraying only on ears started at anthesis and continued for 7 days. One additional spraying was carried out on late period of grain filling. Results showed that spraying only on leaves did not affect ear weight, grain yield and 1,000-grain weight, while the two other treatments increased all above mentioned traits. Neither of treatments affected stem weight, biological yield and contribution of stem reserves in grain filling. Exogenous cytokinin did not increase photosynthetic rate and chlorophyll content in treated leaves until late period of grain filling, although there was no significant increase in final grain weight due to late application of BAP. Our results suggested that effects of foliar application of BAP were mostly due to increased sink size soon after anthesis and increased sink demand probably met by current photosynthesis of organs other than leaves, like ear green tissues. Damage of leaf spot, caused by Mycosphaerella fragariae and gray mold also called Botrytis fruit rot, caused by Botrytis cinerea, average fruit weight and yield were evaluated with regard to cultural methods over 2years. Leaf spot damage decreased significantly by around 90% due to leaf sanitation (removal of dead and leaf spot infected leaves in early spring) and by 50% due to plantation in a one-row-system instead of a two-row-system. When all leaves including the healthy green ones were removed in early spring, average fruit weight decreased significantly by 10%. Fruit sanitation – the third treatment – did not influence any of the measured parameters. Neither leaf sanitation nor fruit sanitation (removal of damaged fruits during harvest) reduced B. cinerea damage significant. Only the combination of a one-row-system, leaf sanitation and fruit sanitation almost halved (not significantly) B. cinerea damage in the first crop year compared to a two-row-system without leaf and fruit sanitation. B. cinerea damage correlated significantly and positively with the biomass of plants by R2= 0.47. According to this study and the cited literature it is suggested for humid Central European conditions to apply a one-row-system combined with leaf sanitation in early spring and fruit sanitation during harvest if fruit density is high, to reduce the risk of damages in larger dimension caused by M. fragariae and B. cinerea.  相似文献

The impact of the grape leafhopper,Empoasca vitis, on leaf gas exchange, plant growth, yield, fruit quality and carbohydrate reserves of the grapevines,Vitis vinifera L., was studied. Gas exchange was measured on the discolored (red) and the green parts of infested main leaves and on leaves from uninfested vines. Photosynthesis and mesophyll conductance were severely reduced on main leaves showing leafhopper feeding symptoms. The stomatal conductance of the red leaf section of infested main leaves was lower than on undamaged control leaves. Additionally, the red leaf section of infested main leaves showed lower transpiration rates when compared to the green parts of the same leaves and to undamaged control leaves. Gas exchange processes of lateral leaves were not affected by leafhopper feeding. Leafhopperload on main leaves was correlated to visual damage symptoms. At 71.8 leafhopper-days per leaf up to 40% of the main leaf area of the infested plants was discolored from the borders towards the center. Lateral leaves showed no feeding symptoms. Shoot diameter, pruning weight and carbohydrate reserves in the wood were not affected by leafhoppers. Lateral leaf area growth was significantly stimulated on plants infested by leafhoppers. No decrease in yield and fruit quality with leafhopper-loads up to 71.8 leafhopper-days per leaf were observed.  相似文献

Light (about 3,000 foot-candles) neither increased nor decreased the sink strength of young, rapidly expanding leaves of Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Black Valentine, as measured by the comparative rates of import of 14C-labeled photosynthates by sink leaves in the light versus dark in short term experiments. Although irradiated sink leaves accumulated more 14C activity, the difference was fully accounted for by photosynthetic reabsorption of respiratory CO2 derived from substrates translocated to the sink leaves.

Maximum sink strength was attained when the sink leaf reached 7 to 8 cm2 in area (9 to 10% of its fully expanded size). Thereafter sink strength declined rapidly and asymptotically to a near zero value at about 45% final area. During this period, however, the rapid decline in translocation was offset by a rapid rise in the photosynthetic rate of the sink leaf, maintaining a near constant relative rate of dry weight increase until the sink leaf had expanded to about 17% of its final area. Although the increasing photosynthetic capacity was associated with a decreasing import capacity, suggesting that the rate of translocation to the sink leaf was controlled by the developing capacity of the sink leaf for photosynthesis, it was not possible to vary the total (true) translocation rate to the sink leaf by varying the photosynthetic rate of the sink leaf in short term light-dark experiments. Despite a high ratio of source to sink in these experiments, no evidence accrued that translocation into young bean leaves was ever sink-limited.

Summary The effect of increasing rates of nitrogen (N) and sulphur (S) as fertilizers on the yield, leaf area and N, P, S, Ca, Mg, NO3 and SO4 = content in leaves of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris, L.) were studied in a hydroponic culture experiment under greenhouse conditions. Bean plants responded significantly to all treatments with differents N/S ratios. When plants grew with high N/S ratios, the leaf content of N, Ca and NO3 increased while the content of K, P and SO4 = decreased. However, optimal yield and leaf area were not obtained. Optimal leaf and fruit dry matter was obtained at N/S ratio value of 1.41. When lower N/S rates were used, optimal leaf and fruit dry matter was only observed when the leaf N/S ratio was between 15 and 16. At high sulphate levels in the nutrient solution there is no interaction with nitrate which is easily observed, resulting in an increase in yield. An interaction between nitrate and sulphate in the nutrient solution was found at a N/S ratio of 0.81 which produced in leaves a synergic effect between P-K, an antagonistic effect between N-P and N-K and a lower yield. The combined effects of water status, vapour pressure deficit (VPD), and elevated temperature from heading to maturity were studied in barley. Plants growing at high VPD, either under well-watered or water deficit conditions, had higher grain yield and grain filling rate than plants growing at low VPD. By contrast, water stress decreased grain yield and individual grain dry matter at any VPD. Water regime and to a lesser extent VPD affected 13C of plant parts sampled at mid-grain filling and maturity. The differences between treatments were maximal in mature grains, where high VPD increased 13C for both water regimes. However, the total amount of water used by the plant during grain filling did not change as response to a higher VPD whereas transpiration efficiency (TE) decreased. The net photosynthetic rate (P N) of the flag leaves decreased significantly under water stress at both VPD regimes. However, P N of the ears was higher at high VPD than at low VPD, and did not decrease as response to water stress. The higher correlation of grain yield with P N of the ear compared with that of the flag leaf support the role of ear as the main photosynthetic organ during grain filling under water deficit and high VPD. The deleterious effects of combined moderately high temperature and drought on yield were attenuated at high VPD.  相似文献

Activity of ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) carboxylase in leaf extracts of the constitutive Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) plant Kalanchoe pinnata (Lam.) Pers. decreased with increasing leaf age, whereas the activity of phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) carboxylase increased. Changes in enzyme activities were associated with changes in the amount of enzyme proteins as determined by immunochemical analysis, sucrose density gradient centrifugation, and SDS gel electrophoresis of leaf extracts. Young developing leaves of plants which received high amounts of NO 3 - during growth contained about 30% of the total soluble protein in the form of RuBP carboxylase; this value declined to about 17% in mature leaves. The level of PEP carboxylase in young leaves of plants at high NO 3 - was an estimated 1% of the total soluble protein and increased to approximately 10% in mature leaves, which showed maximum capacity for dark CO2 fixation. The growth of plants at low levels of NO 3 - decreased the content of soluble protein per unit leaf area as well as the extractable activity and the percentage contribution of both RUBP carboxylase and PEP carboxylase to total soluble leaf protein. There was no definite change in the ratio of RuBP carboxylase to PEP carboxylase activity with a varying supply of NO 3 - during growth. It has been suggested (e.g., Planta 144, 143–151, 1978) that a rhythmic pattern of synthesis and degradation of PEP carboxylase protein is involved in the regulation of -carboxylation during a day/night cycle in CAM. No such changes in the quantity of PEP carboxylase protein were observed in the leaves of Kalanchoe pinnata (Lam.) Pers. or in the leaves of the inducible CAM plant Mesembryanthemum crystallinum L.Abbreviations CAM Crassulacean acid metabolism - RuBP ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate - PEP phosphoenolpyruvate - G-6-P glucose-6-phosphate  相似文献

Abstract: The relationship between abundance of rose‐grain aphid Metopolophium dirhodum (Walker) and leaf chlorophyll content of spring wheat, spring oats and winter barley was investigated. Within production stands of each crop 18–25 plots were established, located at places with different plant quality where aphids were counted on particular leaves of 50–100 tillers, and the leaf chlorophyll content and area were determined. In all stands aphid numbers × tiller?1 increased exponentially with chlorophyll content (r2 = 0.783–0.933). This parallel variation may be explained by increased nitrogen content and assimilate production of vigorous chlorophyll‐rich plants. The aphid numbers on leaves of particular order (within‐plant distribution) were also correlated with leaf chlorophyll content (r2 = 0.373–0.827). However, in oats and barley the analysis of variance of residuals of log aphids × leaf?1 versus leaf chlorophyll regression revealed a significant effect of leaf position (the order of the leaf from the top of the plant). The magnitude of residuals was positively related to leaf size and may be related to the intensity of phloem transport from the source leaves to sink organs.  相似文献

Pruned source-sink transport systems from predarkened plants of Amaranthus caudatus L. and Gomphrena globosa L. were used to study the localization of 14C-labeled photosynthate imported into experimentally induced sink leaves by microautoradiography. During a 6-h (Amaranthus) or a 4-h (Gomphrena) transport period, 14C-assimilates were translocated acropetally from a mature source leaf provided with 14CO2, into a younger induced sink leaf (dark/-CO2). In addition, a young still-expanding source leaf exposed to 14CO2 exported 14C-assimilates basipetally into a mature induced sink leaf (dark/-CO2). Microautoradiographs showed that imported 14C-photosynthate was strongly accumulated in the sieve element/companion cell complexes of midveins, secondary veins, and minor veins of both the mature and the expanding sink leaf. Some label was also present in the vascular parenchyma and bundlesheath cells. In petioles, 14C-label was concentrated in the sieve element/companion cell complexes of all bundles indicating that assimilates were imported and distributed via the phloem. Moreover, a considerable amount of radioactivity unloaded from the sieve element/companion cell complexes of petiolar bundles, was densely located at sites of secondary wall thickenings of differen-tiating metaxylem vessels, and at sites of chloroplasts of the vascular parenchyma and bundle-sheath cells. These observations were more striking in petioles of Gomphrena than Amaranthus.Abbreviation se/cc sieve element/companion cell  相似文献

Sucrose (2,5–1000 mmol l–1), labeled with [14C]sucrose, was taken up by the xylem when supplied to one end of a 30-cm-long leaf strip of Zea mays L. cv. Prior. The sugar was loaded into the phloem and transported to the opposite end, which was immersed in diluted Hoagland's nutrient solution. When the Hoagland's solution at the opposite end was replaced by unlabeled sucrose solution of the same molarity as the labeled one, the two solutions met near the middle of the leaf strip, as indicated by radioautographs. In the dark, translocation of 14C-labeled assimilates was always directed away from the site of sucrose application, its distance depending on sugar concentration and translocation time. When sucrose was applied to both ends of the leaf strip, translocation of 14C-labeled assimilates was directed toward the lower sugar concentration. In the light, transport of 14-C-labeled assimilates can be directed (1) toward the morphological base of the leaf strip only (light effect), (2) toward the base and away from the site of sucrose application (light and sucrose effect), or (3) away from the site of sucrose application independent of the (basipetal or acropetal) direction (sucrose effect). The strength of a sink, represented by the darkened half of a leaf strip, can be reduced by applying sucrose (at least 25 mmol l–1) to the darkened end of the leaf strip. However, equimolar sucrose solutions applied to both ends do not affect the strength of the dark sink. Only above 75 mmol l–1 sucrose was the sink effect of the darnened part of the leaf strip reduced. Presumably, increasing the sucrose concentration replenishes the leaf tissue more rapidly, and photosynthates from the illuminated part of the leaf strip are imported to a lesser extent by the dark sink.Supported by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft  相似文献

The time-dependence of Mn accumulation was confirmed in potato foliage (Solanum tuberosum. L.cv. Norland) grown in solution culture. Older leaves grown at 0.61 mM Mn had substantially higher Mn concentrations than younger leaves and stem samples. Levels of Mn in older leaves increased steadily from 4000 µg g–1 at one week to 8–10,000 µg g–1 at 6 weeks, but were relatively constant in the emerging leaves. Even foliage grown at low Mn levels (0.01 mM Mn) had 4 fold gradients in Mn concentration from younger (40 µg g–1) to older leaves (180 µg g–1).At 0.61 mM Mn, concentrations of 3–4000 µg g–1 in the youngest fully-developed leaves did not bring about any decline in yield, and levels of up to 5000 µg g–1 occurred in individual potato leaves before Mn toxicity symptoms were observed. Potato foliage grown at the high Mn had similar leaf numbers, but showed an increased stem length and smaller leaves than foliage grown at 0.01 mM Mn. In particular, the leaf area of the middle and lower leaf fractions were affected by the high Mn level. The ability of rapidly growing plants to withstand high concentrations of Mn is discussed in relation to the pattern of dry matter and Mn accumulation shown by potato foliage.  相似文献
