Female mounting behavior was studied in a troop of Japanese macaques during one breeding season. Of 79 sexually active females, mounting behavior during consortships was shown by 50 females; 13 only with males, 20 with both males and females, and 17 only with females. Several factors associated with reproductive state influenced the expression of mounting activity. Recency of parturition influenced the mounting by females regardless of the type of partner. Females that had not given birth the previous spring (four to six months prior to the period of observation) were more likely both to mount partners and to produce an infant the following spring. These findings suggest the existence of a common factor, perhaps associated with lactation, inhibitory both to expression of mounting and to female fertility. Additionally, females that mounted were more likely to do so in consortships that followed than in those that preceded conception. This last finding suggests that, in this social context, the endocrine conditions of early pregnancy facilitated mounting to a greater extent than those associated with the cyclic ovary. Separate statistical analyses examined possible influences of age, dominance rank, and kinship on the likelihoods of mounting and being mounted. None of these factors influenced female mounting. Results suggest that the expression of mounting by females was more influenced by reproductive state than by social characteristics of the partner. 相似文献

In order to examine the presence of long-term grooming relationships among unrelated females, grooming interactions of 18 adult females (range: 16-32 years) in a free-ranging group of Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata) were recorded in 2003 and compared with those recorded 10 years earlier, i.e., in 1993. In 2003, on average, each female who had survived the 10 years had grooming interactions with 2.2 surviving old partners with whom she was recorded to have grooming interactions in 1993, 3.5 females related to the surviving old partners, and 4.5 unrelated females who were other than the surviving old partners or their related females. By calculating the ratio of actual grooming partners to available females in 2003, we concluded that females had a greater possibility of selecting surviving old partners as their grooming partners than other unrelated partners, and that they also had a greater possibility of selecting females related to surviving old partners than females other than surviving old partners and their related females. These findings indicate that with regard to grooming relationships, female Japanese monkeys are basically conservative, showing a tendency to concentrate their grooming interactions on closely related females and certain familiar unrelated females such as surviving old partners and some females closely related to these partners. At the same time, however, female Japanese monkeys also showed a progressive trait for grooming since they formed grooming relationships with new partners. The necessity of long-term psychological bonding for long-term grooming relationships between unrelated females is discussed in this work. 相似文献

The present study compares the behavior of old female Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) with that of their full adult daughters in a free-ranging group, with respect to dominance and seasonal changes. Old mothers
(21 to 25 years old) spent more time resting and alone than did their middle-aged adult daughters (10 to 17 yr old). However,
the number of skin-related animals in proximity to the subject females, did not differ between mothers and their adult daughters.
Mothers maintained proximity to more non-kin-related immature animals in the mating season than did their adult daughters,
perhaps to avoid sexual aggression from males and to reduce the loss of body temperature in the cold. Dominance rank clearly
influenced the social interactions of old mothers: high-ranking mothers interacted with more non-related adult females and
immature animals than did low-ranking mothers, indicating that old age does not decrease the attractiveness of high-ranking
animals. 相似文献

Alarm and estrous calls emitted by Japanese macaques were recorded and analyzed in the Arashiyama West and East groups. Their responses to natural calls as well as to synthesized versions varying in the acoustic parameters that defined the vocalizations were studied. The response patterns shown by Arashiyama West group members, which were subject to a distinct change with only a slight difference of a single parameter, appeared to reflect strict underlying perceptual boundaries. This was analogous to the categorical perception that humans show with speech sounds. In contrast, continuous perception was exhibited by Arashiyama East group individuals. When several sounds were played back in combination to the former group, following stimuli were recognized by quite different cues from those by which the first sound was perceived. The groups' differences in vocal perception are discussed in terms of the ecological differences of the environments they inhabit. 相似文献

The affiliative interactions of 11 adult female Japanese macaques that did not deliver an infant during the 1981 birth season
of the Arashiyama West troop were examined. Consideration was given to the effects of kinship as a structuring element in
these birth-season interactions and to the degree of association with various categories of troop members based on age, sex,
and (in the case of adult females) whether or not the females were new mothers. Females without infants interacted predominantly
with their yearling off-spring, although it was the behavior of the offspring that precipitated the interaction. These females
were active in soliciting affiliation with nonkin new mothers, whereas female matrilineal relatives with new infants approached
and remained in proximity to them more than did nonrelated new mothers. Females without newborns groomed and approached nonkin
infants more than infants within their own matriline, and these infants were predominantly those of females in the highest-ranking
matriline of the troop. Adult males were responsible for 40% of all grooming received from nonkin by the females without newborns,
and these males approached them significantly more than did other adult females without infants. These patterns demonstrate
that the structure of social relationships is influenced by the particular dynamics of troop contexts such as birth seasons,
as well as by enduring, broad-based affinities which are less affected by cyclic changes in troop context. 相似文献

This paper describes in detail how a 2.5-year-old female belonging to the second-ranking family in a captive group of three
families managed to outrank her healthy, three-times heavier mother with the aid of the two immature daughters of the alpha
female who was not herself directly involved. After the outranking was completed, the two active allies were removed. This
had no effect on the rank relation between the female and her daughter. It is only after the mother of the two allies was
removed (in addition to her daughters) that the mother recovered her rank above her daughter. This case study and the few
other reported cases of changes in rank among females are discussed in relation to the issue of the stability of rank relations
in hierarchical systems where rank is socially inherited rather than based solely on dyadic power contests. On the basis of
this combined evidence, it appears that when attempting to rise in rank, females do not challenge dominants by allying with
subordinates, but that they rather ally with an individual ranking above the target. This phenomenon, together with the fact
that support is given to other females downwards the hierarchy, might explain the stability of female dominance relations
and be the manifestation of an Evolutionarily Stable Strategy. 相似文献

A histological study was undertaken to clarify seasonal changes in the spermatogenic epithelium of Japanese macaques. Testicular
tissue samples were excised by biopsies from five adult laboratory-maintained males in mating and non-mating seasons. The
samples were fixed with Bouin's solution, embedded in paraffin, and stained with PAS and hematoxylin. Microscopic observations
on cross-sections of seminiferous tubules revealed that the seminiferous epithelium in the mating season was thicker than
in the non-mating season. PAS-stained granules were found in some of the dark A-type spermatogonia, which significantly increased
in the non-mating season. Spermatids of the steps preceding the appearance of the acrosomic cap in stages I to III were observed
significantly more often than those in the step coinciding with the formation of the acrosomic cap in stage IV. In stage I,
the ratio of mature spermatids or spermatozoa to immature spermatids in the mating season was higher than that in the non-mating
season. These findings suggest that spermiogenesis, as well as spermatocytogenesis, is inhibited in the non-mating season.

Two male Japanese monkeys were trained to use a mirror to reach an object that could not be seen directly. Training to use
a mirror in this way proceeded, step-by-step, from reaching a piece of apple to key-tracking. In Experiment 1 the monkeys
were trained to use the mirror to locate a desired object, a piece of apple in a box facing the mirror, which could be seen
only by looking into the mirror. The apple, once located, however, could be grasped without further reference to the mirror.
This behavior is referred to as mirror mediated object discrimination. In subsequent experiments the monkeys could not reach
the goal object except by observing it and his hand movement in the mirror. In Experiment 2 the target was a piece of apple
visible in the mirror, in Experiment 3 an illuminated key and in Experiment 4 a series of keys which were illuminated sequentially.
Mirror guided behavior such as shown in Experiment 2, 3, and 4 has not previously been demonstrated in monkeys. 相似文献

The present study examined grooming relationships of adolescent females in a free-ranging group of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) at Katsuyama. To assess whether the loss of the mother influenced the grooming relationships of adolescent females (5–7 years old), we compared the time spent in grooming interactions and the number of grooming partners among the following three groups: 6 adolescent orphans with sisters, 9 adolescent orphans without sisters, and 11 adolescent non-orphans with surviving mothers. In Japanese macaques, grooming most frequently occurs between mothers and their daughters. Therefore, it is expected that if the mother is lost, orphans will devote less time to grooming interactions than non-orphans. However, the time spent in overall grooming interactions did not differ among the three groups. While non-orphans maintained grooming relationships with their mothers, orphans acquired alternative grooming relationships with other group members. Orphans adopted two kinds of tactics to compensate for the loss of the mother. First, adolescent orphans with sisters developed more affiliative grooming relationships with their sisters than non-orphans with sisters. Secondly, adolescent orphans without sisters spent more time in grooming interactions with same-aged females and non-related adult females. Moreover, regarding grooming interactions with same-aged females and non-related adult females, orphans without sisters had a larger number of grooming partners than non-orphans. These results indicate that adolescent females have enough flexibility to develop their grooming network after the loss of their mothers, and that the lack of mother and sisters might accelerate socialization of adolescent females and enable them to be integrated in reciprocal adult grooming relationships. 相似文献

In animal societies, some stressful events can lead to higher levels of physiological stress. Such stressors, like social rank, also predict an increased vulnerability to an array of diseases. However, the physiological relationship between social rank and stress varies between different species, as well as within groups of a single species. For example, dominant individuals are more socially stressed at times, while at other times it is the subordinate ones who experience this stress. Together, these variations make it difficult to assess disease vulnerability as connected to social interactions. In order to learn more about how physiological rank relationships vary between groups of a single species, cortisol measurements from hair samples were used to evaluate the effects of dominance rank on long-term stress levels in despotic and less stringent female rhesus macaque hierarchal groups. In despotic groups, cortisol levels were found not to be correlated with social rank, but a negative correlation was found between social rank and cortisol levels in less stringent hierarchies. Low ranking monkeys in less stringent groups secreted elevated levels of cortisol compared to higher ranking animals. These data suggest that variations in the strictness of the dominance hierarchy are determining factors in rank related stress physiology. The further consideration of nonhuman primate social system diversity and the linear degree of their hierarchies may allow for the development of valid rank-related stress models that will help increase our understanding and guide the development of new therapeutics for diseases related to human socioeconomic status. 相似文献

Spatial proximity was used to investigate the social structure of a group of 14 Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata fuscata) living in Cavriglia Park (Arezzo, Italy). Instantaneous sampling was used to collect data. From April 1984 to March 1985,
273 hr of observation were accumulated. Time spent in proximity by any two monkeys was transformed into a similarity index.
Two triangular matrices were created with these indices (one for the non-breeding and the other for the breeding season) and
submitted to nonmetric multidimensional scaling (MDS). During the non-breeding season proximity proved closely related to
hierarchical relationships and the existence of two real social classes was suggested. Tendency to loneliness was associated
in this period with old age in females and low rank in both females and males. Moreover, socially stable versus socially unstable
animals had different spacing patterns. Almost the same central-peripheral structure was outlined in both seasons, consistently
with a stableoikia hypothesis for this group under these conditions. During the breeding season social organization was influenced by individual
sexual interest. A male spacing pattern emerged, probably in correlation with female homosexuality, which played a preeminent
role in the sexual context. The relative loneliness of sexually immature individuals was evident in this season. 相似文献

Fecal testosterone and cortisol levels in six wild male Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata), three of high rank and three of low, were analyzed to investigate the hormonal correlates of rank, reproduction, and female-directed aggression. The study encompassed the 6-month mating season, from October 1999 to March 2000, during which time 251 fecal samples and approximately 550 h of behavioral data were collected. Dominant males were not found to differ from subordinate males in overall rates of aggressive or copulatory behavior. Likewise, testosterone excretion, which peaked in the early part of the mating season and declined gradually thereafter, did not differ significantly by rank. High-ranking males, however, were observed to excrete significantly higher levels of cortisol than low-ranking males, suggesting that dominance may carry costs. The two hormones were found to be inversely correlated in the two most dominant males, but independent in all others. Rate of noncontact aggression was significantly correlated with testosterone, while no significant relationships were observed between testosterone and contact aggression nor any aspect of copulatory behavior. These data further support the contention that social subordinance and stress are not inexorably linked, as well as suggest that elevated glucocorticoid concentrations in high-ranking males may reflect increased metabolic costs associated with dominant male reproductive strategy. 相似文献

The co-feeding relationships of immature Japanese monkeys in the provisioned situation were studied. The most frequent co-feeders
for immature females were diversified as compared to those for immature males. The number of immature females who showed strong
co-feeding relationships with their mothers gradually decreased with age in both high- and middle/low-ranking matrilines,
but the percent decrease was greater for middle/low-ranking immatures. Almost all immature females who displayed strong co-feeding
relationships with adult males were from middle/low-ranking matrilines. Strong co-feeding relationships with mothers among
immature males from high-ranking matrilines remained until 4 years of age. In contrast, strong co-feeding relationships with
mothers among middle/low-ranking immature males decreased rapidly in the first year of life, and most 1- to 4-year-olds showed
no strong co-feeding relationships with other group members. It is considered that middle/low-ranking mothers may not provide
their immatures with a secure base for obtaining food in the provisioned situation. 相似文献

When the individual Japanese macaques of the Koshima troop feed on natural food, they usually feed alone. In situations where
animals usually feed without other animals, there is a possibility that subordinate animals may avoid feeding sites at which
dominant animals are feeding. This paper examines whether social relationships such as kinship or dominance exert any influence
on an animal's choice of feeding sites, by analyzing episodes in which an animal approached and climbed into a tree where
other animals were. As a result, it was found that social relationships did not influence whether an animal climbed into a
tree where other animals were feeding, and that no particular age-sex pair co-fed. Agonistic interactions frequently occurred
when the inter-individual distance was less than 1 m. From these findings, the feeding sites were divided into two spaces:
(1) a tolerance feeding space, and (2) an intolerance feeding space. It is presumed that animals can feed without entering
others' intolerance feeding spaces when food is abundant, as it was in the present study period. Thus social relationships
do not influence an animal's choice of feeding sites in such a situation. 相似文献

We have quantitatively documented the development of sex differences in the behavior of juvenile Japanese macaques (1 to 2
years of age). Mothers treated their offspring differently by sex, i.e., mothers of males broke contact with them more frequently
than did mothers of females. Juvenile males played more, and mounted other macaques more frequently; juvenile females groomed
their mothers more and were also punished by other group members more frequently than were males. Males showed a pattern of
decreasing interactions with their mothers, but females increased the frequency of their maternal interactions. These patterns
appear to presage the life histories of the sexes. However, comparisons with other species of nonhuman primates indicate that
although sex differences in behavior are common, the variability among species severely limits cross-specific generalizations. 相似文献

We employed techniques of behavioral entropy to carry out a quantitative analysis of sequences of behavioral patterns evident in the interaction between infants and other members of a group of Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata fuscata). The group concerned included examples both of monkeys in captivity and in the wild state. The results were examined as a function of the animal age and environmental differences (cage-field). An example is given to illustrate the use of information theory. Findings partially confirmed that the variability of social behavior decreases as the age of the animals increases. 相似文献

In a provisioned troop of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) in Arashiyama, Japan, greater adherence to Kawamura's rules of matrilineal rank inheritance and youngest ascendancy occurred among high-ranking females versus low-ranking females. Accordingly, high-ranking females formed more clustered hierarchies and low-ranking females had more dispersed hierarchies. A proximate explanation for this finding may be related to differences in how females maintain their social networks. To determine whether the clustering in the hierarchy was reflected in patterns of social cohesiveness, I compared network sizes of coalition and grooming partners for females in each third of the hierarchy. I calculated the proportion of available partners that were coalition and grooming partners within each category of relatedness (0.5 r 0.004 and r = 0). High-ranking females formed coalitions with a large proportion of their close relatives and a small proportion of their distant relatives; middle-ranking females supported an intermediate proportion of their close relatives and a small proportion of their distant relatives; and, low-ranking females formed coalitions with very few available close and distant relatives. High-ranking females groomed nearly all available close relatives and an intermediate proportion of distant relatives, whilst middle- and low-ranking females groomed a large proportion of available close relatives and a very small proportion of distant relatives. Thus, levels of clustering within the hierarchy appeared to reflect levels of social cohesion, in terms of grooming and coalition formation. 相似文献

The degenerating pattern of spermatogenic cells in the seminiferous tubule of Japanese macaques was studied to clarify a relationship
between seasonal changes of reproductive performances and cytological findings in the Japanese macaque. For light microscopy,
testis samples were obtained from five adult animals by biopsy in April (nonmating season) and October (mating season). For
electron microscopy, specimens from four additional macaques were used. Degenerating cells were found in all steps of spermatogenesis.
In stages I to V of the cycle of the seminiferous epithelium, morphologically atypical pachytene spermatocytes were observed
in 14.7 and 10.0% of the cells in the nonmating and mating seasons, respectively, although the difference in percentage was
not significant. Mature spermatids with atypical features in those stages occupied 59.6% of the cells in the nonmating season,
which significantly decreased to 34.1% in the mating season. These results imply that the seasonal change of sperm production
is related, at least in part, to the process of degeneration of the spermatogenic cells in this species. 相似文献

The study reports the relationship between hierarchy, genetic relatedness and social interaction in captive Japanese macaques.
Grooming and proximity were found to be positively related to both dominance rank and degrees of relatedness. Ranks also positively
correlated with threats while no relationship was observed between genetic relationships and agonistic interactions. The removal
of a-male tightened the male hierarchy while the female hierarchy became relatively loose. Affiliative behaviour became more
correlated with ranks than degrees of genetic relatedness. In the absence of α-male, the next dominant male avoided involvement
in either agonistic or afliliative interactions with reintroduced animals and group females. 相似文献
