The killing of genetically unrelated young by males has been viewed as a strategy that forces victimized females to advance the onset of their next fertile period, thus infanticidal males gain a time advantage that may be crucial to maximize reproductive success. Among females that may raise several broods in a year, a failure occurring relatively earlier in the time-course of the previous breeding attempt may result in an increased investment in the next breeding attempt. This female strategy may be exploited by males in their own interest, and may strongly select for male infanticidal behaviour. I demonstrate that, in the house sparrow, females mated with infanticidal males re-laid earlier, initiated more breeding attempts and fledged more offspring than females mated with non-infanticidal males. These results suggest that both the time saving and the manipulation of female investment are independent mechanisms conferring advantages that may have selected for male infanticide in the studied population.  相似文献

We explored the responses of monogamous house sparrow parentsto deviations in their mates' contributions to nestling provisioning.Following 1-2 days of baseline measurement of parental fooddelivery rates, we applied small lead fishing weights to thetail feathers of either male or female parents. Weighting hadmuch greater immediate impact on male parental care than on female care, but the handicapping had little long-term effecton either male or female provisioning behavior. When parentalperformance of handicapped males was most impaired, their matesdid not show significant increases in parental care as compensation,nor did females mated to handicapped males reduce their provisioningas their mates recovered from weighting. Similarly, males matedto handicapped females did not respond to their partners' recovery with declines in their own efforts; paradoxically, these malesshowed a sustained elevation of provisioning throughout thepost-treatment interval, despite no significant reduction inprovisioning by weighted females. The apparent insensitivityof both males and females to changes in their mates' parentalbehavior, and the ineffectiveness of current partner behaviorat predicting an individual's provisioning effort, fail toconform to assumptions of biparental care models that requirefacultative responses to partner deviations in effort. Instead,the remarkable consistency of each individual's behavior supportsthe notion of "sealed bids" and suggests that variation innestling provisioning is largely attributable to factors thatare independent of the mate's current behavior, such as differencesin individual quality.  相似文献

While yolk is generally the primary source of embryo nutrients in squamates, numerous species supplement this with facultative placentotrophy. We argue that facultative placentotrophy should have selective importance relevant to offspring fitness. In the skink Niveoscincus metallicus, the size of ovulated eggs is unrelated to maternal size but large females produce offspring that are larger than is necessary for survival, providing evidence for facultative placentotrophy. We discuss the circumstances in which facultative placentotrophy might be used to supplement the nutritional support provided by yolk and obligate placentotrophy in this species, and present summary data from experiments designed to investigate these circumstances. Clutch reduction by oviduct removal had no effect on neonate mass or snout-vent length, indicating that the number of embryos does not influence allocation of maternal resources once gestation has commenced. Manipulation of maternal basking opportunity in combination with food intake during pregnancy suggested that an important role of facultative placentotrophy is the optimization of embryonic fat reserves. This hypothesis was supported by the observation that larger neonates have larger abdominal fat bodies. These reserves presumably facilitate survival in the relatively short pre-hibernatory period available to newborn animals. Our data indicate that they also play a vital role in maintaining pre-natal condition if birth is delayed by adverse weather, a common circumstance in this species. In such circumstances the yolk has been used up and the placental membranes have degenerated. Experimental induction of premature ovulation of eggs with reduced yolk, achieved by injecting females with FSH, was followed by fertilization using stored sperm. Gestation length was greatly reduced and the resulting neonates were all < or =75% normal birth mass, with two of the six births being stillborn. Thus facultative placentotrophy does not appear to be a means of compensating for a poor yolk supply. We suggest that facultative placentotrophy in N. metallicus is not a transitional stage en route to greater reliance on obligate placentotrophy, but a uniquely squamate adaptation that provides flexibility in embryonic nutrition, and optimizes offspring fitness in an unpredictable temperate climate.  相似文献

1. The habitat heterogeneity (HHH) and individual adjustment (IAH) hypotheses are commonly proposed to explain a decrease in reproduction rate with increasing population density. Higher numbers of low-quality territories with low reproductive success as density increases lead to a decrease in reproduction under the HHH, while more competition at high density decreases reproduction across all territories under the IAH. 2. We analyse the influence of density and habitat heterogeneity on reproductive success in eight populations of long-lived territorial birds of prey belonging to four species. Sufficient reliability in distinguishing between population-wide, site-specific and individual quality effects on reproduction was granted through the minimal duration of 20 years of all data sets and the ability to control for individual quality in five of them. 3. Density increased in five populations but reproduction did not decrease in these. Territory occupancy as a surrogate of territory quality correlated positively with reproductive success but only significantly so in large data sets with more than 100 territories. 4. Reproductive success was always best explained by measures of territory quality in multivariate models. Direct or delayed (t-1) population density entered very few of the best models. Mixed models controlling for individual quality showed an increasing reproductive performance in older individuals and in those laying earlier, but measures of territory quality were also always retained in the best models. 5. We find strong support for the habitat heterogeneity hypothesis but weak support for the individual adjustment hypothesis. Both individual and site characteristics are crucial for reproductive performance in long-lived birds. Proportional occupancy of territories enables recognition of high-quality territories as preferential conservation targets.  相似文献

Genetic prerequisites for the evolution of sexual dimorphism, sex-specific heritabilities and low or negative genetic correlations between homologous traits in males and females are rarely found. However, sexual dimorphism is evolving rapidly following environmental change, suggesting that sexual dimorphism and its genetic background could be environmentally sensitive. Yet few studies have explored the sensitivity of the genetic background of sexual dimorphism on environmental variation. In this study, on Drosophila melanogaster, we used a large nested full-sib-half-sib breeding design where families were split into four different developmental temperatures: two constant temperature treatments of 25 and 30 °C and two cycling temperatures with means of 25 and 30 °C, respectively. After emergence, we tested heat shock tolerance of adult flies. We found that sexual dimorphism was strongly affected by temperature during development. Moreover, we found that female heritability was significantly lower in flies developing at hot temperature and more so under hot and cycling temperatures. Interestingly, most of the genetic variation for heat shock tolerance was orthogonal (i.e. noncorrelated) between sexes, allowing independent evolution of heat shock tolerance in males and females. These findings give support to the hypothesis that the evolution of sexual dimorphism can be influenced by the environments experienced during development.  相似文献

In vitro models of HCV infection have allowed for the clarifying of molecules and mechanisms involved in the main steps of virus cell-entry. HCV entry and neutralization appear to be closely related. Neutralizing antibodies inhibit the E2-CD81 binding, therefore CD81 is considered to be a major target of immune response. The tight-junction proteins are also implicated in E2-binding to CD81 and successive steps of virus entry, in cooperation with several co-receptors, whose involvement has still to be elucidated. Increasing evidence has emphasized the importance of cell-to-cell HCV-transmission in chronic infection. This route for infection could favour virus-escape from host-neutralization though its CD81-dependency is still debated. The main reasons which have delayed our understanding of HCV-infection are here critically reviewed, as are the challenges faced by investigators in the field. A deeper insight into the different pathways involved could help to elucidate some crucial features of HCV infection mechanisms and disclose important implications in its pathogenesis, which could help in suggesting new targets for successful immune-prophylactic/therapeutic strategies.  相似文献

Many physiological and pathophysiological processes, such as embryogenesis, immune defense, wound healing, or metastasis, are based on cell migration and invasion. The activity of the ubiquitously expressed NHE1 isoform of the plasma membrane Na(+)/H(+) exchanger is one of the requirements for directed locomotion of migrating cells. The mechanisms by which NHE1 is involved in cell migration are multiple. NHE1 contributes to cell migration by affecting the cell volume, by regulating the intracellular pH and thereby the assembly and activity of cytoskeletal elements, by anchoring the cytoskeleton to the plasma membrane, by the organization of signal transduction and by regulating gene expression. The present review focuses on two additional, extracellular mechanisms by which NHE1 activity contributes to cell migration and invasion. Protons extruded by the NHE1 lead to local, extracellular acidification which, on the one hand, can create pH optima needed for the activity of proteinases at invadopodia/podosomes necessary for extracellular matrix digestion and, on the other hand, facilitates cell/matrix interaction and adhesion at the cell front.  相似文献

Protein interaction domain families that modulate the formation of macromolecular complexes recognize specific sequence or structural motifs. For instance SH3 and WW domains bind to polyproline peptides while SH2 and FHA domains bind to peptides phosphorylated in Tyr and Thr respectively. Within each family, variations in the chemical characteristics of the domain binding pocket modulate a finer peptide recognition specificity and, as a consequence, determine the selection of functional protein partners in vivo. In the proteomic era there is the need for reliable inference methods to help restricting the sequence space of the putative targets to be confirmed experimentally by more laborious experimental approaches. Here we will review the published data about the peptide recognition specificity of the SH3 domain family and we will propose a classification of SH3 domains into eight classes. Finally, we will discuss whether the available information is sufficient to infer the recognition specificity of any uncharacterized SH3 domain.  相似文献

The recovery of vegetation in Mediterranean ecosystems after wildfire is mostly a result of direct regeneration, since the same species existing before the fire regenerate on-site by seeding or resprouting. However, the possibility of plant colonization by dispersal of seeds from unburned areas remains poorly studied. We addressed the role of the frugivorous, bird-dependent seed dispersal (seed rain) of fleshy-fruited plants in a burned and managed forest in the second winter after a fire, before on-site fruit production had begun. We also assessed the effect on seed rain of different microhabitats resulting from salvage logging (erosion barriers, standing snags, open areas), as well as the microhabitats of unlogged patches and an unburned control forest, taking account of the importance of perches as seed rain sites. We found considerable seed rain by birds in the burned area. Seeds, mostly from Olive trees Olea europaea and Evergreen pistaches Pistacia lentiscus, belonged to plants fruiting only in surrounding unburned areas. Seed rain was heterogeneous, and depended on microhabitat, with the highest seed density in the unburned control forest but closely followed by the wood piles of erosion barriers. In contrast, very low densities were found under perches of standing snags. Furthermore, frugivorous bird richness seemed to be higher in the erosion barriers than elsewhere. Our results highlight the importance of this specific post-fire management in bird-dependent seed rain and also may suggest a consequent heterogeneous distribution of fleshy-fruited plants in burned and managed areas. However, there needs to be more study of the establishment success of dispersed seeds before an accurate assessment can be made of the role of bird-mediated seed dispersal in post-fire regeneration.  相似文献

1. Parasitism may be an important factor determining the coexistence of closely related species. Although host–parasite interactions can affect the ecology and distribution of the host species, virtually nothing is known about how other interspecific interactions affecting the host, such as competition or predation, relate to the parasite burden of the host. 2. We studied parasite‐mediated competition between two closely related Calopteryx damselflies, C. virgo L. and C. splendens Harris. We investigated a total of 31 populations, including 18 allopatric and 13 sympatric populations. We measured the occurrence of gut parasites, eugregarines. 3. We found that the prevalence of gregarines was higher in C. virgo than in C. splendens. On average, more than half of the C. virgo individuals were infected by eugregarines both in allopatric and sympatric populations. However, hardly any allopatric C. splendens populations had gregarines, but most of sympatric populations had infected individuals. 4. According to our results, co‐existence of the host species affects the likelihood of the subordinate species showing higher levels of parasitism. Interspecific aggression, lower species genetic heterozygosity, and the difference in host species immunity are proposed as possible explanations for greater parasite burdens in the inferior species at sympatric sites.  相似文献

Whether movement will enable organisms to alleviate thermal stress is central to the biodiversity implications of climate change. We use the temperature-dependence of ectotherm performance to investigate the fitness consequences of movement. Movement to an optimal location within a 50 km radius will only offset the fitness impacts of climate change by 2100 in 5 per cent of locations globally. Random movement carries an 87 per cent risk of further fitness detriment. Mountainous regions with high temperature seasonality (i.e. temperate areas) not only offer the greatest benefit from optimal movement but also the most severe fitness consequences if an organism moves to the wrong location. Doubling dispersal capacity would provide modest benefit exclusively to directed dispersers in topographically diverse areas. The benefits of movement for escaping climate change are particularly limited in the tropics, where fitness impacts will be most severe. The potential of movement to lessen climate change impacts may have been overestimated.  相似文献
