Cell adhesion systems commonly operate in close partnership with the cytoskeleton. Adhesion receptors bind to the cortex and regulate its dynamics, organization and mechanics; conversely, the cytoskeleton influences aspects of adhesion, including strength, stability and ductility. In this review we consider recent advances in elucidating such cooperation, focusing on interactions between classical cadherins and actomyosin. The evidence presents an apparent paradox. Molecular mechanisms of mechanosensation by the cadherin-actin apparatus imply that adhesion strengthens under tension. However, this does not always translate to the broader setting of confluent tissues, where increases in fluctuations of tension can promote intercalation due to the shrinkage of adherens junctions. Emerging evidence suggests that understanding of timescales may be important in resolving this issue, but that further work is needed to understand the role of adhesive strengthening across scales. 相似文献

Differences among lake morphologies often explain variation in characteristics of lentic ecosystems. Although beaver ponds
also vary in morphology, previous studies have not examined the effects of such variation on downstream ecosystems. This study
evaluated downstream effects of multiple beaver ponds in the Colorado Rocky Mountains during one low and one high-flow year.
Beaver pond morphology was described as the natural log transformed ratio of beaver dam height (which determines hydraulic
head) to pond surface area and related to pond spillover phytoplankton and characteristics of the ecosystem downstream (nutrient
concentrations, limiting nutrients, periphyton, benthic organic matter (BOM), and benthic invertebrate consumers). Nitrate
concentration increased systematically downstream of beaver ponds, but only in the low flow year when groundwater influences
predominated. Effects of beaver ponds on soluble reactive phosphorus concentration depended on pond morphology, increasing
downstream of small ponds with high dams, but only during the low-flow year. In situ experiments showed that neither beaver
activity nor pond morphology predicted periphyton-limiting nutrients downstream. Both periphyton biomass and BOM decreased
downstream of small ponds with high dams but pond morphology did not predict abundance of invertebrate grazers or detritus-feeding
consumers. While suspension feeding invertebrates increased downstream from small ponds with high dams, variation in chlorophyll
a from water spilling over beaver dams did not follow a similar pattern. We conclude that the effects of beaver ponds on downstream
nutrients, resources and consumers are rarely systematic, but instead depend on variation in pond morphology and on annual

Forensic entomologists use insect evidence to estimate the minimum postmortem interval of human remains. However, how different forms of trauma influence insect attraction to, and colonization of, the body is poorly understood. Our objective was to identify the Calliphoridae community present in the Piedmont region (Georgia, USA), and determine whether postmortem sharp force trauma (none vs. slashed vs. stabbed) altered insect attraction, colonization, and the resulting decomposition rate of stillborn pigs (Suidae). We show that the limited blow fly community is dominated by Lucilia coeruleiviridis Macquart (Diptera: Calliphoridae). Third instars (L3) of L. coeruleiviridis were found on control pigs at 48 h, slashed pigs at 36 h, and stabbed pigs at 24 h. Decomposition rate, as determined by total body score, was greater in the first 12 h in stabbed pigs, compared to control and slashed pigs. Further experimentation is required to determine the effect of different forms of trauma on insect attraction, colonization, and resulting vertebrate decomposition rates. 相似文献

In animals living in groups, the social environment is fundamental to shaping the behaviors and life histories of an individual. A mismatch between individual and group behavior patterns may have disadvantages if the individual is incapable of flexibly changing its state in response to the social environment that influences its energy gain and expenditure. We used different social groups of juvenile three‐spined sticklebacks ( Gasterosteus aculeatus) with experimentally manipulated compositions of individual sociability to study the feedback between individual and group behaviors and to test how the social environment shapes behavior, metabolic rate, and growth. Experimentally created unsociable groups, containing a high proportion of less sociable fish, showed bolder collective behaviors during feeding than did corresponding sociable groups. Fish within groups where the majority of members had a level of sociability similar to their own gained more mass than did those within mismatched groups. Less sociable individuals within sociable groups tended to have a relatively low mass but a high standard metabolic rate. A mismatch between the sociability of an individual and that of the majority of the group in which it is living confers a growth disadvantage probably due to the expression of nonadaptive behaviors that increase energetic costs. 相似文献

Sustained maximum lumbar spine flexion can increase the angle at which the low back flexion relaxation phenomenon (FRP) is observed. This adaptation has been hypothesized to have implications for the control of lumbar spine stability and increase the potential for low back injury. The objective of this study was to investigate if similar changes in the FRP would occur from sub-maximal spine flexion induced by an extended continuous duration of seated office deskwork. Twenty-three participants (12 male and 11 female) performed three bouts of full forward spine flexion interspersed with two 1-h periods of seated deskwork. Lumbar spine angular kinematics and electromyographic activity from the lumbar erector spinae were obtained throughout all trials. The angles at which myoelectric silence occurred (FRP onset) were documented. Lumbar flexion at FRP onset increased by 1.3 ± 1.5° after 1-h of sitting ( p < 0.05) with no further increase after 2-h. However, when the angle at the FRP onset was normalized to the total range of flexion, there was no difference in the FRP onset. These results suggest that the seated posture may induce residual deformation in the viscoelastic passive tissues of the low back; this could increase the challenge of controlling spine motion and reduce the load-bearing capacity of the lumbar spine system during activities performed following extended bouts of sitting. 相似文献

The demand for additional children is influenced by the presence of sons within a family. This study is based on cross-sectional data of 9416 currently married women under age 50 from a Pakistan national survey in 1979-80. The analysis suggests that having at least one son in the family influences the demand for additional children. Urban and rural comparisons indicated a higher preference for sons in urban areas. Unless the socioeconomic milieu changes, son preference is likely to remain strong in Pakistan. 相似文献

This study compares results on reconstructing the ancestral state of characters and ancestral areas of distribution in Cornaceae to gain insights into the impact of using different analytical methods. Ancestral character state reconstructions were compared among three methods (parsimony, maximum likelihood, and stochastic character mapping) using MESQUITE and a full Bayesian method in BAYESTRAITS and inferences of ancestral area distribution were compared between the parsimony-based dispersal-vicariance analysis (DIVA) and a newly developed maximum likelihood (ML) method. Results indicated that among the six inflorescence and fruit char-acters examined, “perfect” binary characters (no homoplasy, no polymorphism within terminals, and no missing data) are little affected by choice of method, while homoplasious characters and missing data are sensitive to methods used. Ancestral areas at deep nodes of the phylogeny are substantially different between DIVA and ML and strikingly different between analyses including and excluding fossils at three deepest nodes. These results, while raising caution in making conclusions on trait evolution and historical biogeography using conventional methods, demonstrate a limitation in our current understanding of character evolution and biogeography. The biogeographic history favored by the ML analyses including fossils suggested the origin and early radiation of Cornus likely occurred in the late Cretaceous and earliest Tertiary in Europe and intercontinental disjunctions in three lineages involved movements across the North Atlantic Land Bridge (BLB) in the early and mid Tertiary. This result is congruent with the role of NALB for post-Eocene migration and in connecting tropical floras in North America and Africa, and in eastern Asia and South America. However, alternative hypotheses with an origin in eastern Asia and early Trans-Beringia migrations of the genus cannot be ruled out. 相似文献

In the present study we examined the effect of seminal plasma (SP) on angiogenesis in the porcine oviduct. Gene expressions of vascular endothelial growth factor ( VEGF) and its two receptors ( Flt-1: fms-like tyrosine kinase and Flk-1/ KDR: fetal liver kinase-1/kinase insert domain-containing receptor) as well as fibroblast growth factors ( FGF-1 and 2) and von Willenbrand factor ( VWF) were determined in the oviduct of SP-treated and control (PBS-treated) gilts. Moreover, vascular density (VD) indicated by endothelial cell area immunolocalized by VWF staining, was assessed in the oviducts. Real-time PCR revealed significantly higher expression of FGF-2 and VWF on day 1 ( p < 0.05) after SP administration in comparison to control animals. In contrast, Flt-1 mRNA level on day 1 was lower in SP-treated gilts compared to controls ( p < 0.05). In the examined oviductal sections, VD did not differ between control and SP-treated animals. However, in SP-treated animals VD was higher on day 5 than on day 1 ( p < 0.05) or 3 ( p < 0.01). SP had no significant effect on VEGF, Flk-1/ KDR and FGF-1 mRNA expression. In conclusion, our results suggest that SP affects the vascular network by changing the expression of factors contributing to angiogenesis. 相似文献

The promoters of genes of the major histocompatibility complex vary not only because of linkage disequilibrium with their coding sequences but also, we argue, because of natural selection that acts particularly strongly on MHC II gene promoters. Thus, the promoter of H2Eb varies more than that of H2K, to an extent that cannot be accounted for by coding variation, and the same applies to HLA.DRB1 in comparison with H2D. We discuss how transduction by lentivirus vectors followed by adoptive transfer of monoclonal T cells could be used to test the functional activity of variant mouse promoters in vivo, and how homologous recombination in suitable cell lines might provide a short cut to obtaining promoter knock-ins. 相似文献

Previous studies of the vocalization frequencies of mammals have suggested that it is either body mass or environment that drives these frequencies. Using 193 species across the globe from the terrestrial and aquatic environments and a model selection approach, we identified that the best‐supported model for minimum and maximum frequencies for vocalization included both body mass and environment. The minimum frequencies of vocalizations of species from all environments retained the influence of body mass. For maximum frequency however, aquatic species are released from such a trend with body mass having little constraint on frequencies. Surprisingly, phylogeny did not have a strong impact on the evolution of the maximum frequency of mammal vocalizations, largely due to the pinniped species divergence of frequency from their carnivoran relatives. We demonstrate that the divergence of signal frequencies in mammals has arisen from the need to adapt to their environment. 相似文献

Blocked riverine spawning migration routes constitute one of the main threats of potamodromous fish that require well-connected habitats of high quality to maintain their unique life-history form. Alburnus vistonicus, a potamodromous species inhabiting the Vistonis freshwater system in northern Greece, manages to cope with wide salinity fluctuations in Vistonis Lake, but the impact of the fragmented connectivity of the lake’s two main freshwater suppliers, Kosynthos and Kompsatos rivers, has not been assessed. We analyzed the species whole reproductive cycle and we divided it into phases. Cyclicity was observed in gonadosomatic index and oocyte diameter, while total fecundity remained constant prior to the onset of the spawning season. Stomach fullness and condition factor differed among the surveyed habitats. Successful spawning and multiple spawning were verified, as well as spawning migration and potamodromy. However, mature females with markers of recent spawning activity were captured also in the lake, suggesting spawning occurrence in the lake or a previously undocumented oscillatory behavior between the lake and the rivers during the spawning season and between sequential spawning events. Either behavior may serve as a mechanism to overcome the restricted spawning migration routes due to the fragmented river connectivity. 相似文献

It has been increasingly recognized that the type of matrix surrounding habitat patches can affect biodiversity in landscapes, but there were only qualitative reviews of the subject focused on particular taxonomic groups. We present a quantitative review of studies from 1985 to 2008 that compared effects of different matrix types on individuals, populations and communities. We compiled 104 studies, most on animals, covering a broad range of landscape types and spatial scales. Most studies were empirical, focused on individuals and communities, and evaluated abundance/richness in the patch as the dependent variable. The type of matrix surrounding habitat patches influenced the studied parameters in 95% of the studies, but such effects were overall smaller compared to patch size or isolation effects. Matrix type effects were strongly species-specific, with different species responding differently to matrix type in 96% of studies comparing species or group of species. In 88% of studies, matrix types more similar in structure to the patch had higher quality for the studied organisms from the point of view of functional connectivity. Overall, the type of matrix is important, but patch size and isolation are the main determinants of ecological parameters in landscapes. Matrix quality generally increases with increasing structural similarity with habitat patches, a pattern that could be used as a general guideline for management of the matrix in fragmented landscapes. 相似文献

In a prospective study 88 patients, with rheumatoid arthritis who had stopped taking gold, penicillamine, or levamisole were randomly allocated to one of the alternative drugs and followed up for a minimum of one year. Concurrent studies of the effects of gold, penicillamine, and levamisole prescribed in 123 patients as the first second-line drug were used for comparison. No difference in toxicity or efficacy between primary and secondary use of gold or penicillamine was identified. Variation in the toxicity of levamisole could in part be accounted for by changes in the dose regimen over the four years of study. The length of the treatment-free interval between drugs did not influence subsequent development of toxicity. These results suggest that an adverse reaction to one of the three second-line drugs studied should not prejudice the selection of another. 相似文献
