The main purpose of this article is to review the previously published data on so-called "moose sickness" in the light of two case studies presented here. Molybdenosis and Mo-induced disturbances of Cu metabolism in moose are characterized by numerous severe lesions caused by reduced activity of Cu-containing enzymes such as ceruloplasmin, superoxide dismutase in blood, and myocardial cytochrome c oxidase. Consequences of such metabolic disturbances (e.g. glucose intolerance, insulin resistance, and non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus) were first reported in moose in 2000. This was corroborated by the detection of furosine, pentosidine, and Nepsilon-(carboxymethyl)-lysine in blood plasma and the kidney, indicating long-term hyperglycemia. Increased concentrations of insulin, glucose, and urea and reduced levels of phosphate, T4, and Mg in blood were also seen. Recently, a similar toxic endocrinopathy was reported in sheep treated therapeutically with thiomolybdates because of chronic Cu toxicosis. Two case reports illustrate the difficulty of diagnosing Mo-related disturbances of Cu metabolism in moose, as analyses of Cu and Mo have not proved entirely reliable because of interaction, accumulation, and the short biological half-life of Mo. The increased bioavailability of Mo is most probably the result of increased pH in the soil, caused, for example, by liming, making Mo accessible in forage plants consumed by moose. The etiology underlying the Swedish moose disease has been difficult to determine because of the complex clinical signs and unspecific pathological findings. However, a combination of clinical chemistry, trace element analysis, and biochemistry correlated with the pathological findings has corroborated molybdenosis and Mo-induced disturbances of Cu metabolism as the probable etiological factor. Alternative etiologies suggested for the moose disease, such as viral infection, starvation because of overpopulation, and/or shortage of forage as well as senescence and phytotoxic substances, are discussed.  相似文献

Material self-assembly as a self-organizing process is always accompanied by symmetry-breaking in the material configuration. Self-sequencing of amino acids during their thermal polymerization has lost a certain property of permutation symmetry that was observed in the mixture of free amino acids. The evolutionary precursor state is more symmetrical about its internal material configuration and more degenerate due to the multitude of the indistinguishable individuals. The evolution proceeds in the direction along which the degeneracy in the internal states dissolves owing to the symmetry-breaking originating in material flow equilibrium of open material aggregates. Protobiological information is latent in the material system which is highly symmetrical and highly degenerate in its internal states. Evolution of matter is an endogenous process in which the earlier symmetric property is lost and less degenerate states are approached. Quantum-mechanically, the generation of protobiological information is due to the symmetry-breaking of the Hamiltonian originating in the interaction with the exterior through material flow, in contrast to the Schrödinger equation which preserves a symmetry and the associated invariants.  相似文献

The sting is the most effective defense of social Hymenoptera against vertebrate predators but in the hover wasps (subfamily Stenogastrinae) it is scarcely used. In these wasps a quite enlarged Dufour’s gland and the extensive use of its secretion in the peculiar rearing of the larvae and defense determined important morphological modifications of the sting structure. Connecting anatomical and morphological data with behavioral observations we determined that in these wasps the Dufour’s gland secretion is attached to the egg during oviposition but can be also channeled to the outside via the sting when it is collected by adult females for larval rearing or construction of the nest ant guards. The anatomical modifications of the sting reduced the function of the sting as a defensive weapon in hover wasps.  相似文献

Mechanical forces influence the induction, growth and maintenance of the vertebrate skeleton. Using the zebrafish, Danio rerio, we explore the hypothesis that mechanical forces can ultimately lead to the generation of skeletal evolutionary novelties by modifications of the mechano‐responsive molecular pathways. Locomotion and feeding in zebrafish larvae begin early in ontogeny and it is likely that forces incurred during these behaviours affect subsequent skeletal development. We provide two case studies in which our hypothesis is being tested: the kinethmoid and intermuscular bones. The kinethmoid is a synapomorphy for the order Cypriniformes and is intricately linked to the bones of the protrusible upper jaw. It undergoes chondrogenesis within a ligament well after muscular forces are present within the head. Subsequent ossification of the kinethmoid occurs at sites of ligamentous attachment, leading us to believe that mechanical forces are involved. Unlike the kinethmoid, which has evolved only once, intermuscular bones have evolved several times during teleostean evolution. Intermuscular bones are embedded within the myosepta, the collagenous sheets between axial muscles. The effect of mechanical forces on the development of these intermuscular bones is experimentally tested by increasing the viscosity of the water in which larval zebrafish are raised. Since locomotion in high viscosity requires greater muscular forces, we can directly test the influence of mechanical forces on the development of intermuscular bones. Using developmental techniques paired with outgroup comparison for the kinethmoid, and direct experimentation for intermuscular bones, our case studies provide complementary insights into the effects of mechanical forces on the evolution of skeletal novelties in fishes.  相似文献

A recently synthesized vanadyl(IV) complex with aspirin[VO(aspirin)ClH2O]2, has been thoroughly investigated by physicochemical techniques. In order to support the proposed structure, stoichiometry and the coordination sphere of the vanadium center, some studies such as elemental analysis, electronic (diffuse reflectance) and vibrational (infrared) spectroscopies, magnetic susceptibility, as well as the thermal behavior, were carried out. The bioactivity of the vanadium complex (VOAspi) was evaluated on two osteoblast-like cell lines in culture, being its cytotoxic effects stronger than the vanadyl cation as assessed by morphological changes and lipid peroxidation. These effects may be partially explained through the induction of the expression of Erks (Extracellular signal-regulated kinases) and the inhibition of the PTPases (Phosphotyrosine phosphatases) present in the cellular extracts.  相似文献

The properties and geometry of bone in the mandible play a key role in mandible behaviour during a person’s lifetime, and attention needs to be paid to the influence of bone properties. We analysed the effect of bone geometry, size and bone properties in mandible behaviour, experimenting on cadaveric mandibles and FE models. The study was developed using the geometry of a cadaveric mandible without teeth. Three models of cadaveric condyles were experimentally tested with instrumented with four rosettes, and a condyle reaction of 300 N. Four finite element models were considered to validate the experiments and analyse mandible behaviour. One numeric model was simulated with 10 muscles in a quasi-static condition. The experimental results present different condyle stiffness’s, of 448, 215 and 254 N/mm. The values presented in the rosettes are influenced by bone geometry and bone thickness; maximum value was ?600 με in rosette #4, and the maximum strain difference between mandibles was 111%. The numerical results show that bone density decreases and strain distribution increases in the thinner mandible regions. Nevertheless, the global behaviour of the structure remains similar, but presents different strain magnitudes. The study shows the need to take into account bone characteristics and their evolutions in order to improve implant design and fixation throughout the patient life. The change in bone stiffness promotes a change in maximum strain distribution with same global behaviour.  相似文献

Predation has been recognized as a major selective force in the evolution of behavioural characteristics of mammals. As a consequence of local predator extinction, prey may lose knowledge about natural predators but usually express behavioural adjustments after return of predators. Human harvest may replace natural predation but prey selection may differ from that of natural predators leading to a change in the behavioural response of prey. We show that hunting success (HS) of re-colonizing wolves (Canis lupus) on moose (Alces alces) in Scandinavia was higher than reported in North America, where moose have been continuously exposed to wolves and grizzly bears. We found no evidence that moose expressed behavioural adjustments that lowered the HS of wolves in territories that had been occupied by wolves for up to 21 years. Moose behaviour towards wolves and humans typically differs in Scandinavia compared to North America. We explain the differences found to be caused by variation in predation pressure by large carnivores and the rate, and mode, of human harvest during the twentieth century.  相似文献

When the chimpanzee genome sequence was released, human deleterious alleles associated with simple mendelian diseases were observed as wild-type alleles in six genes (AIRE, MKKS, MLH1, MYOC, OTC and PRSS1). The absence of recognizable phenotypic effects in chimpanzee, contrary to the clinical effect observed in humans, is attributed to epistatic interactions (compensation) between potentially deleterious and compensatory alleles. In this report we investigate the possible evolutionary histories by which substitution of alternative variants in these six genes either ameliorates or avoids pathological consequences.  相似文献

The astounding morphological diversity exhibited by the fruits of vertebrate-dispersed plants has been traditionally interpreted as the adaptive outcome of divergent selective pressures exerted on plants by the broad array of frugivorous animals involved in seed dispersal. Although the selective capacity of frugivores provides support to this interpretation, recent studies have challenged it by documenting a strong phylogenetic component associated to interspecific variation in most fruit characteristics. Size-related fruit traits provide a conspicuous exception to this pattern, because they exhibit considerable variation at the between-species level which is largely independent of phylogeny and is correlated with consumption by differently-sized dispersal agents. Substantial species-level variance in size-related traits may reflect genuine disperser-driven diversification, but may also be partly influenced by correlated evolution of fruit size with the size of other plant structures. This latter possibility is tested here for bird-dispersed plants of the Iberian Peninsula using phylogenetically independent contrasts. Results demonstrate the existence of correlated evolution of fruit and leaf size at the species level. As all the plant taxa considered have their fruits eaten, and seeds dispersed, by the same relatively reduced set of frugivorous bird species, results suggest that a significant fraction of the variation in fruit size represented in the species sample may be explained as an indirect consequence of variation in leaf size, rather than being associated with adaptive divergence related to seed dispersal agents.  相似文献

Dollo’s law, that complex characters are not regained in evolution, is a pattern applied to many systems. Recent work has evaluated unidirectional evolution in a number of contexts, and several violations of this law have been documented. These methods have also been criticized for potentially overestimating reversals. We test the hypothesis that the ancestral reproductive mode of oviparity can be regained in vipers, in opposition to Dollo’s law. We use model comparison and ancestral character state reconstruction methods that address recent criticisms, and find evidence both supporting and refuting Dollo’s predictions from different analyses. We discuss our results in the context of unidirectional evolution and review factors required for strong inference of violations of Dollo’s law.  相似文献

Background and Aims

The Orchidaceae have a history of recurring convergent evolution in floral function as nectar production has evolved repeatedly from an ancestral nectarless state. However, orchids exhibit considerable diversity in nectary type, position and morphology, indicating that this convergence arose from alternative adaptive solutions. Using the genus Disa, this study asks whether repeated evolution of floral nectaries involved recapitulation of the same nectary type or diversifying innovation. Epidermis morphology of closely related nectar-producing and nectarless species is also compared in order to identify histological changes that accompanied the gain or loss of nectar production.

Methods

The micromorphology of nectaries and positionally equivalent tissues in nectarless species was examined with light and scanning electron microscopy. This information was subjected to phylogenetic analyses to reconstruct nectary evolution and compare characteristics of nectar-producing and nectarless species.

Key Results

Two nectary types evolved in Disa. Nectar exudation by modified stomata in floral spurs evolved twice, whereas exudation by a secretory epidermis evolved six times in different perianth segments. The spur epidermis of nectarless species exhibited considerable micromorphological variation, including strongly textured surfaces and non-secreting stomata in some species. Epidermis morphology of nectar-producing species did not differ consistently from that of rewardless species at the magnifications used in this study, suggesting that transitions from rewardlessness to nectar production are not necessarily accompanied by visible morphological changes but only require sub-cellular modification.

Conclusions

Independent nectary evolution in Disa involved both repeated recapitulation of secretory epidermis, which is present in the sister genus Brownleea, and innovation of stomatal nectaries. These contrasting nectary types and positional diversity within types imply weak genetic, developmental or physiological constraints in ancestral, nectarless Disa. Such functional convergence generated by morphologically diverse solutions probably also underlies the extensive diversity of nectary types and positions in the Orchidaceae.  相似文献

Researchers in the field of molecular ecology and evolution require versatile and low-cost genetic typing methods. The AFLP (amplified fragment length polymorphism) method was introduced 10 years ago and shows many features that fulfil these requirements. With good quality genomic DNA at hand, it is relatively easy to generate anonymous multilocus DNA profiles in most species and the start-up time before data can be generated is often less than a week. Built-in dynamic, yet simple modifications make it possible to find a protocol suitable to the genome size of the species and to screen thousands of loci in hundreds of individuals for a relatively low cost. Until now, the method has primarily been applied in studies of plants, bacteria and fungi, with a strong bias towards economically important cultivated species and their pests. In this review we identify a number of research areas in the study of wild species of animals where the AFLP method, presently very much underused, should be a very valuable tool. These aspects include classical problems such as studies of population genetic structure and phylogenetic reconstructions, and also new challenges such as finding markers for genes governing adaptations in wild populations and modifications of the protocol that makes it possible to measure expression variation of multiple genes (cDNA-AFLP) and the distribution of DNA methylation. We hope this review will help molecular ecologists to identify when AFLP is likely to be superior to other more established methods, such as microsatellites, SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) analyses and multigene DNA sequencing.  相似文献

Larvae ofDrosophila melanogaster are polymorphic with respect to their foraging behavior. Rovers move around, while sitters stay more in one place. This difference in movements while foraging may result in differences in the rate at which these larvae are attacked by hymenopteran parasitoids, especially by those that locate their hosts by reacting to the vibrations they make. From previous work it is known thatD. melanogaster larvae show intra- and interpopulation variation in their ability to destroy parasitoid eggs by encapsulation. If rovers have a higher probability to be attacked by a parasitoid, they may have a higher developed encapsulation system as compensation for this higher attack probability. Experiments show that rovers are indeed more often attacked byAsobara tabida, a vibrotactic (=reacting to vibrations) parasitoid, than sitters. However, foraging behavior and encapsulation ability appear to be independent of each other inD. melanogaster. This shows that the large variation between populations in encapsulation ability is not a reflection of the relative proportion of rovers and sitters in the populations. It also shows that parasitoids can be an important factor in the maintenance of the foraging behavior polymorphism, because a higher encapsulation ability is not a compensation for a higher attack probability.  相似文献

Human olfactory receptor, hOR17-210, is identified as a pseudogene in the human genome. Experimental data has shown however, that the gene product of frame-shifted, cloned hOR17-210 cDNA was able to bind an odorant-binding protein and is narrowly tuned for excitation by cyclic ketones. Supported by experimental results, we used the bioinformatics methods of sequence analysis (genome-wide and pair-wise), computational protein modeling and docking, to show that functionality in this receptor is retained due to sequence-structure features not previously observed in mammalian ORs. This receptor does not possess the first two transmembrane helical domains (of seven typically seen in GPCRs). It however, possesses an additional TM that has not been observed in other human olfactory receptors. By incorporating these novel structural features, we created two putative models for this receptor. We also docked odor ligands that were experimentally shown to bind hOR17-210. We show how and why structural modifications of OR17-210 do not hinder this receptor's functionality. Our studies reveal that novel gene rearrangements that result in sequence and structural diversity may have a bearing on OR and GPCR function and evolution.  相似文献

The occipital bone is frequently investigated in paleoanthropological studies because it has several features that help to differentiate various fossil hominin species. Among these features is the separation between inion and endinion, which has been proposed to be an autapomorphic trait in (Asian) Homo erectus. Methodologies are developed here to quantify for the first time the location of these anatomical points, and to interpret their variation due to the complex interactions between exocranial and endocranial size and shape of the occipital and nuchal planes, as well as the occipital lobes and cerebellum. On the basis of our analysis, neither ‘the separation between inion and endinion’ nor ‘endinion below inion’ can be considered as an autapomorphic trait in H. erectus, since this feature is a condition shared by extant African great apes and fossil hominins. Moreover, our results show that the exo- and endocranial anatomy of the occipital bone differs between hominins (except Paranthropus boisei specimens and KNM-ER 1805) and great apes. For example, chimpanzees and bonobos are characterized by a very high position of inion and their occipital bone shows an antero-posterior compression. However, these features are partly correlated with their small size when compared with hominins. Asian H. erectus specimens have a thick occipital torus, but do not differ from other robust specimens, neither in this feature nor in the analysed exo- and endocranial proportions of the occipital bone. Finally, the apparent brain size reduction during the Late Pleistocene and variation between the sexes in anatomically modern humans (AMH) reflect that specimens with smaller brains have a relatively larger posterior height of the cerebellum. However, this trend is not the sole explanation for the ‘vertical shift’ of endinion above inion that appears occasionally and exclusively in AMH.  相似文献

Recent work has shown that the evolution of Drosophila melanogaster resistance to attack by the parasitoid Asobara tabida is constrained by a trade-off with larval competitive ability. However, there are two very important questions that need to be answered. First, is this a general cost, or is it parasitoid specific? Second, does a selected increase in immune response against one parasitoid species result in a correlated change in resistance to other parasitoid species? The answers to both questions will influence the coevolutionary dynamics of these species, and also may have a previously unconsidered, yet important, influence on community structure.  相似文献
