The accurate location of the main axes of rotation (AoR) is a crucial step in many applications of human movement analysis. There are different formal methods to determine the direction and position of the AoR, whose performance varies across studies, depending on the pose and the source of errors. Most methods are based on minimizing squared differences between observed and modelled marker positions or rigid motion parameters, implicitly assuming independent and uncorrelated errors, but the largest error usually results from soft tissue artefacts (STA), which do not have such statistical properties and are not effectively cancelled out by such methods. However, with adequate methods it is possible to assume that STA only account for a small fraction of the observed motion and to obtain explicit formulas through differential analysis that relate STA components to the resulting errors in AoR parameters. In this paper such formulas are derived for three different functional calibration techniques (Geometric Fitting, mean Finite Helical Axis, and SARA), to explain why each technique behaves differently from the others, and to propose strategies to compensate for those errors. These techniques were tested with published data from a sit-to-stand activity, where the true axis was defined using bi-planar fluoroscopy. All the methods were able to estimate the direction of the AoR with an error of less than 5°, whereas there were errors in the location of the axis of 30–40 mm. Such location errors could be reduced to less than 17 mm by the methods based on equations that use rigid motion parameters (mean Finite Helical Axis, SARA) when the translation component was calculated using the three markers nearest to the axis.  相似文献

SUMMARY: Thermoduric colony counts at 30° of laboratory pasteurized milk determined by the roll tube or agar strip methods were lower than those obtained by the standard Petri plate method. The differences in colony count were not of such magnitude, however, as to be likely to result in many errors in grading if a thermoduric bacterial content of greater than 104/ml is accepted as an index of unsatisfactory cleansing of dairy equipment.
The three methods examined were simpler and more economical than the Petri plate technique, but the agar strip method, as described, using the standard loop, was the simplest and gave a sufficiently reliable estimate of the thermoduric colony count for advisory purposes.  相似文献

Quantitative analyses of animal motion are increasingly easy to conduct using simple video equipment and relatively inexpensive software packages. With careful use, such analytical tools have the potential to quantify differences in movement between individuals or species and to allow insights into the behavioral consequences of morphological differences between taxa. However, as with any other type of measurement, there are errors associated with kinematic measurements. Because normative kinematic data on human and nonhuman primate locomotion are used to model aspects of gait of fossil hominins, errors in the extant data influence the accuracy of fossil gait reconstructions. The principal goal of this paper is to illustrate the effect of camera speeds (frame rates) on kinematic measurement errors, and to demonstrate how these errors vary with subject size, movement velocity, and sample size. Kinematic data for human walking and running (240 Hz), as well as data for primate quadrupedal walking and running (180 Hz) were used as inputs for a simulation of the measurement errors associated with various linear and temporal kinematic variables. Measurement errors were shown to increase as camera speed, subject body size, and interval duration all decrease, and as movement velocity increases. These results have implications for the methods used to calculate subject velocity and suggest that using a moving marker to measure the linear displacements of the body is preferable to the use of a stationary marker. Finally, while slower camera speeds will always result in higher measurement errors than do faster camera speeds, this effect can be moderated to some extent by collecting sufficiently large samples of data.  相似文献

The use of registration techniques to determine motion transformations noninvasively has become more widespread with the increased availability of the necessary software. In this study, three surface registration techniques were used to generate carpal bone kinematic results from a single cadaveric wrist specimen. Surface contours were extracted from specimen computed tomography volume images of the forearm, carpal, and metacarpal bones in four arbitrary positions. Kinematic results from each of three registration techniques were compared with results derived from multiple spherical markers fixed to the specimen. Kinematic accuracy was found to depend on the registration method and bone size and shape. In general, rotation errors of the capitate and scaphoid were less than 0.5 deg for all three techniques. Rotation errors for the other bones were generally less than 2 deg, although error for the trapezoid was greater than 2 deg in one technique. Translation errors of the bones were generally less than 1 mm, although errors of the trapezoid and trapezium were greater than 1 mm for two techniques. Tradeoffs existed in each registration method between image processing time and overall kinematic accuracy. Markerless bone registration (MBR) can provide accurate measurements of carpal kinematics and can be used to study the noninvasive, three-dimensional in vivo kinematics of the wrist and other skeletal joints.  相似文献

Various techniques are available for determining the effective diffusivity D(e) of solutes such as glucose in cell immobilization matrices. Nearly all, if not all, are subject to errors and limitations as regards the ranges of temperature, pressure, and/or concentration over which they give reliable results. It is the purpose of this article to compare three of these methods, designated (a) thin disc, (b) cylinder, and (c) beads types, and to show by means of a sensitivity and error analysis of the equation used in each method that the thin-disc and cylindrical techniques give more accurate results of D(e) than does the bead method.  相似文献

Intra-oral scanners will play a central role in digital dentistry in the near future. In this study the accuracy of three intra-oral scanners was compared. Materials and methods: A master model made of stone was fitted with three high precision manufactured PEEK cylinders and scanned with three intra-oral scanners: the CEREC (Sirona), the iTero (Cadent) and the Lava COS (3M). In software the digital files were imported and the distance between the centres of the cylinders and the angulation between the cylinders was assessed. These values were compared to the measurements made on a high accuracy 3D scan of the master model. Results: The distance errors were the smallest and most consistent for the Lava COS. The distance errors for the Cerec were the largest and least consistent. All the angulation errors were small. CONCLUSIONS: The Lava COS in combination with a high accuracy scanning protocol resulted in the smallest and most consistent errors of all three scanners tested when considering mean distance errors in full arch impressions both in absolute values and in consistency for both measured distances. For the mean angulation errors, the Lava COS had the smallest errors between cylinders 1-2 and the largest errors between cylinders 1-3, although the absolute difference with the smallest mean value (iTero) was very small (0,0529°). An expected increase in distance and/or angular errors over the length of the arch due to an accumulation of registration errors of the patched 3D surfaces could be observed in this study design, but the effects were statistically not significant. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: For making impressions of implant cases for digital workflows, the most accurate scanner with the scanning protocol that will ensure the most accurate digital impression should be used. In our study model that was the Lava COS with the high accuracy scanning protocol.  相似文献

Abstract: Various toxic, useful, and/or scarce metals in waste electric and electronic equipment (WEEE) have rarely been assessed due to low data availability, except for the four metals regulated by the European Union's Directive on the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS). This article describes the results of screening 36 metals in WEEE using simple assessment methods for cases where the decision makers do not know for which substances in a product countermeasures should be taken and where data cannot be easily obtained. First, this study examines the decision-making process and prerequisites for screening, classifies existing assessment methods, and presents three simple indices for screening (resource consumption, water pollution affecting human health, and aquatic biota conservation) so that screening can be readily started for many (20–36) metals. Following this, a case study is conducted for waste TV sets, revealing which metal in which product module or component should be targeted by environmental countermeasures. Finally, the screening results are compared with those of six other methods using diagrams devised to indicate the superiority of screening methods, and several screening techniques are discussed. The conclusions are that the EU RoHS Directive does not necessarily cover all of the toxic metals that could be of concern and the screening methods presented could help identify such metals; the selection of methods is critical; and a more detailed method does not necessarily provide more accurate results.  相似文献

Surgical hair restoration has been performed as a treatment for male pattern hair loss for more than 40 years. Although techniques have changed dramatically over the past several years, making it possible to achieve natural-appearing results, there are still many patients with unacceptable outcomes. These patients may have had procedures performed in the past with antiquated techniques or performed recently with substandard techniques. The causes of unfavorable results can be classified into one of three categories: technical errors, poor planning, or complications. The results in these patients can be dramatically improved through a number of different reparative surgical techniques. The majority of these techniques can be performed in an office outpatient setting. More than 40 patients unsatisfied with previous surgical hair restoration have been treated with the different techniques reviewed in this article. All patients had successful outcomes with significant improvement in appearance. Despite the increased challenges when performing reparative surgery, outcomes were favorable in all patients, with small to significant improvements in appearance achieved. Some of these challenges include the limited supply of donor hairs, reduced scalp laxity, and theoretically reduced vascularity due to scarring and transected blood vessels, and patient skepticism. Furthermore, the few complications that occurred were minor and correctable, including one case each of poor hair growth associated with extensive small graft (consisting of one to four hairs) transplanting, and of scalp scarring associated with the removal and primary closure of a large number of "plug" grafts (typically grafts 3 to 4 mm in size consisting of seven or more hairs) in a single procedure.  相似文献

Summary Selections from factor and principal component analyses were compared with those from the Smith-Hazel index when selecting for several switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) traits. The objective of this study was to examine several alternatives to index selection. Such procedures would potentially eliminate problems of selection associated with Smith-Hazel indices, including errors in genetic parameter estimates and difficulty in assigning relative economic weights to traits. Selection was performed on 1,280 plants that were evaluated over 2 years at 1 location, in a randomized complete block design with 4 replicates. The plants were evaluated for forage yield and several forage quality traits. The comparisons of index selection with principal factor analysis, maximum-likelihood factor analysis and principal component analysis were made for three sets of traits (five traits per set) to estimate repeatability for the comparisons. Multivariate analyses were performed on both simple and genotypic correlation matrices. Comparisons were made by computing Spearman's rank correlations between selection index plant scores and scores computed from multivariate analysis and by determining the number of plants selected in common for the selection methods. Among the three multivariate analysis methods evaluated in this study, principal component analysis had the highest correlation with index selection. The high correlation for principal component analysis of simple correlation matrices indicates the potential for using this statistical method for selection purposes. This would permit the breeder to reduce field costs (e.g., time, labor, equipment) required to obtain the genetic parameter estimates necessary to construct selection indices.  相似文献

AIMS: To characterize reference yeast strains and identify indigenous strains isolated from wine fermentations by PCR methods. METHODS AND RESULTS: We compared several PCR techniques for yeast identification. We used oligonucleotide primers that are complementary to (i) intron splice sites, (ii) REP and (iii) ERIC elements to produce PCR fingerprints that display specific patterns between the different yeast species. These three techniques were used to characterize 41 reference yeast strains belonging to 15 different species and to identify 40 indigenous strains isolated from grape must and wine fermentations. Species-specific banding patterns were obtained with the three PCR-techniques with different degrees of intraspecific differentiation depending on the method. By comparing the PCR fingerprints of unknown isolates with those produced by reference strains, we identified yeast strains isolated from an industrial wine fermentation. CONCLUSIONS: All three PCR techniques are rapid, reliable and simple methods of yeast identification. As far as we know, this is the first time that the primers designed for amplifying repetitive elements in bacteria have been successfully used in yeast. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Industry needs rapid, reliable and simple methods of yeast identification. The proposed PCR techniques will allow to achieve this objective.  相似文献

Aim Various statistical techniques have been used to model species probabilities of occurrence in response to environmental conditions. This paper provides a comprehensive assessment of methods and investigates whether errors in model predictions are associated to specific kinds of geographical and environmental distributions of species. Location Portugal, Western Europe. Methods Probabilities of occurrence for 44 species of amphibians and reptiles in Portugal were modelled using seven modelling techniques: Gower metric, Ecological Niche Factor Analysis, classification trees, neural networks, generalized linear models, generalized additive models and spatial interpolators. Generalized linear and additive models were constructed with and without a term accounting for spatial autocorrelation. Model performance was measured using two methods: sensitivity and Kappa index. Species were grouped according to their spatial (area of occupancy and extent of occurrence) and environmental (marginality and tolerance) distributions. Two‐way comparison tests were performed to detect significant interactions between models and species groups. Results Interaction between model and species groups was significant for both sensitivity and Kappa index. This indicates that model performance varied for species with different geographical and environmental distributions. Artificial neural networks performed generally better, immediately followed by generalized additive models including a covariate term for spatial autocorrelation. Non‐parametric methods were preferred to parametric approaches, especially when modelling distributions of species with a greater area of occupancy, a larger extent of occurrence, lower marginality and higher tolerance. Main conclusions This is a first attempt to relate performance of modelling techniques with species spatial and environmental distributions. Results indicate a strong relationship between model performance and the kinds of species distributions being modelled. Some methods performed generally better, but no method was superior in all circumstances. A suggestion is made that choice of the appropriate method should be contingent on the goals and kinds of distributions being modelled.  相似文献

Methods for visualization of complex carbohydrates ultrastructurally were employed to study specific organelles of the rat monocyte and macrophage. Vicinal glycols of glycoconjugates were demonstrated with the periodic acid-thiocarbohydrazide-silver proteinate (PA-TCH-SP) postembedding sequence and acid groups were delineated by the dialyzed iron (DI) and high iron diamine (HID) preembedding techniques. Lysosomal bodies were generally found reactive with all three methods, although those of monocytes from the bone marrow and peripheral blood were notably lacking in acidic groups. The Golgi complex was consistently PA-TCH-SP-reactive, as were associated vesicles and occasional cisternal expansions, possibly related to GERL. Numerous cytoplasmic vesicles and small granulated structures and cisternae of the rough endoplasmic reticulum were also PA-TCH-SP-reactive.  相似文献

The formation of interstrand crosslinks in the DNA of cis-diamminedichloroplatinum(II) (cisplatin)-treated Chinese hamster cells has been demonstrated by three independent, highly sensitive techniques: namely those of alkaline elution, renaturation of crosslinked DNA and alkaline sucrose gradient velocity sedimentation. Simultaneous measurement of DNA break frequency by the first two methods and a computer model combined with the third enabled the calculation of crosslink frequency after application of low doses of cisplatin. Good agreement was found between the values obtained by the three methods used here, and also with those obtained by direct measurement of the amount of crosslinked hybrid DNA in density-labelled cells treated with higher doses of cis-platin (Roberts, J.J. and Friedlos, F. (1981) Biochim. Biophys, Acta 655, 146--151). When measured by all three methods described here, crosslinking was found to increase during several hours after treatment and then to decrease with a half-life of between 12 and 24 h. For low initial levels of crosslinking, this was largely attributed to an excision repair process, since the formation of breaks in DNA was only minimal.  相似文献

A common problem encountered in linkage analyses is that execution of the computer program is halted because of genotypes in the data that are inconsistent with Mendelian inheritance. Such inconsistencies may arise because of pedigree errors or errors in typing. In some cases, the source of the inconsistencies is easily identified by examining the pedigree. In others, the error is not obvious, and substantial time and effort are required to identify the responsible genotypes. We have developed two methods for automatically identifying those individuals whose genotypes are most likely the cause of the inconsistencies. First, we calculate the posterior probability of genotyping error for each member of the pedigree, given the marker data on all pedigree members and allowing anyone in the pedigree to have an error. Second, we identify those individuals whose genotypes could be solely responsible for the inconsistency in the pedigree. We illustrate these methods with two examples: one a pedigree error, the second a genotyping error. These methods have been implemented as a module of the pedigree analysis program package MENDEL.  相似文献

The response of mesophyll conductance to CO(2) (g(m)) to environmental variation is a challenging parameter to measure with current methods. The 'variable J' technique, used in the majority of studies of g(m), assumes a one-to-one relationship between photosystem II (PSII) fluorescence and photosynthesis under non-photorespiratory conditions. When calibrating this relationship for Populus trichocarpa, it was found that calibration relationships produced using variation in light and CO(2) were not equivalent, and in all cases the relationships were non-linear-something not accounted for in previous studies. Detailed analyses were performed of whether different calibration procedures affect the observed g(m) response to CO(2). Past linear and assumed calibration methods resulted in systematic biases in the fluorescence estimates of electron transport. A sensitivity analysis on modelled data (where g(m) was held constant) demonstrated that biases in the estimation of electron transport as small as 2% (~0.5 μmol m(-2) s(-1)) resulted in apparent changes in the relationship of g(m) to CO(2) of similar shape and magnitude to those observed with past calibration techniques. This sensitivity to biases introduced during calibrations leads to results where g(m) artefactually decreases with CO(2), assuming that g(m) is constant; if g(m) responds to CO(2), then biases associated with past calibration methods would lead to overestimates of the slope of the relationship. Non-linear calibrations were evaluated; these removed the bias present in past calibrations, but the method remained sensitive to measurement errors. Thus measurement errors, calibration non-linearities leading to bias, and the sensitivity of variable J g(m) hinders its use under conditions of varying CO(2) or light.  相似文献

In order to find a simple and efficient method to determine sulphate reduction rates in environmental samples, we tested different 35S-SO(4)(2-) radiotracer techniques. The methods varied in the application of 35S-SO(4)(2-) and subsequent extraction of reduced 35S-sulphur species. Samples were either incubated as sediment slurries mixed with the radiotracer, or as undisturbed sediment cores after core injection of the radiotracer. Reduced 35S-sulphur species were retrieved passively by diffusion or actively by reflux distillation. The methods were applied to surface sediments derived from three aquatic habitats situated in Germany: (1) a tideless brackish water, (2) a mining lake and (3) a natural freshwater lake. The best possible method was expected to yield the highest sulphate reduction rates, which were reproducible with respect to magnitude and depth distribution. At the same time, we aimed to keep the disturbance of samples as well as the expenditure of labour and equipment to a minimum. For all three types of aquatic habitats, the combination of core injection followed by diffusion was the most reliable and efficient method. This combination is therefore recommended for determination of sulphate reduction rates in laminated sediments.  相似文献

Aim Public land survey records are commonly used to reconstruct historical forest structure over large landscapes. Reconstruction studies have been criticized for using absolute measures of forest attributes, such as density and basal area, because of potential selection bias by surveyors and unknown measurement error. Current methods to identify bias are based upon statistical techniques whose assumptions may be violated for survey data. Our goals were to identify and directly estimate common sources of bias and error, and to test the accuracy of statistical methods to identify them. Location Forests in the western USA: Mogollon Plateau, Arizona; Blue Mountains, Oregon; Front Range, Colorado. Methods We quantified both selection bias and measurement error for survey data in three ponderosa pine landscapes by directly comparing measurements of bearing trees in survey notes with remeasurements of bearing trees at survey corners (384 corners and 812 trees evaluated). Results Selection bias was low in all areas and there was little variability among surveyors. Surveyors selected the closest tree to the corner 95% to 98% of the time, and hence bias may have limited impacts on reconstruction studies. Bourdo’s methods were able to successfully detect presence or absence of bias most of the time, but do not measure the rate of bias. Recording and omission errors were common but highly variable among surveyors. Measurements for bearing trees made by surveyors were generally accurate. Most bearings were less than 5° in error and most distances were within 5% of our remeasurements. Many, but not all, surveyors in the western USA probably estimated diameter of bearing trees at stump height (0.3 m). These estimates deviated from reconstructed diameters by a mean absolute error of 7.0 to 10.6 cm. Main conclusions Direct comparison of survey data at relocated corners is the only method that can determine if bias and error are meaningful. Data from relocated trees show that biased selection of trees is not likely to be an important source of error. Many surveyor errors would have no impact on reconstruction studies, but omission errors have the potential to have a large impact on results. We suggest how to reduce potential errors through data screening.  相似文献

The present work deals with the factors affecting the accuracy of the dosage of vaccinal preparations in the aerosol immunization of animals in a dynamic chamber. The method for analysis of errors in the determination of the aspiration dose is proposed. The method is based on mathematical models describing the main parameters of aerosols and the respiratory factors of the animals, the errors of the techniques and equipment used for immunization. The errors in the determination of the dose have been shown to decrease the reliability of results obtained in the evaluation of respiratory ED50 of vaccinal preparations and to impose limits on the required number of experimental animals.  相似文献
