Twenty-two Florida black bear (Ursus americanus floridanus) cubs (< or = 12 mo old) from Florida were examined for endoparasites between 1998 and 2003. Eleven species of helminths were found (8 nematodes, 2 trematodes, and 1 acanthocephalan). The most prevalent helminths were Ancylostoma caninum (64%), Macracanthorhynchus ingens (36%), Strongyloides sp. (27%), Baylisascaris transfuga (23%), and A. tubaeforme (14%). New host records include A. tubaeforme and Brachylaima virginianum. This is the first report of B. transfuga in black bears from Florida.  相似文献

Five orphaned European brown bear cubs (Ursus arctos) from 3 litters were hand-reared from the ages of 1–4 months. Body mass initially ranged from 1.7 to 2.8 kg. Growth rates were monitored with reference to diet. Over a period of 3 years, 6 different feed formulas were used. The first 4 formulas were given with bottles until an average age of 133 days. Conversion to mass in the first 10 months ranged from 3.5 to 32.0 g of food per gram of body mass (or 38.1–192.6 kJ of gross energy/gram body mass), and was affected by type of diet. High fat content increased, whereas high carbohydrate content decreased the conversion rates. Formula 3, with 12.0% protein, 23.9% fat, and only 0.2% carbohydrates, simulated values found in bears' milk and produced the best growth rates. Formula 6 (bread, fruits, and meat) was used from ages 7 to 35 months, and over this period, the efficiency of gross energy conversion decreased gradually, by an eventual factor of 3.8. Hand-reared cubs ranged from 1.3 to 2.7 times heavier than 17 wild cubs measured at matching ages. Wild mass is probably limited by maternal hibernation, and by the largely herbivorous nature of the diet. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

11 只5 ~ 11 月龄的断奶大熊猫幼兽先后患一种急性传染性、顽固性腹泻病,1 只大熊猫幼兽在发病4 d 后死亡,相同饲养条件下由母兽哺育的同龄大熊猫幼兽未见发病。取发病大熊猫幼兽粪便、血液以及呕吐物进行细菌学和寄生虫学检查,未检出病原;用轮状病毒粪便抗原ELISA 快速诊断,受检的8 只大熊猫幼兽腹泻便都多次检出阳性结果。采集发病大熊猫的病料进行病毒病原分离,从腹泻大熊猫幼兽的粪便中分离出病毒颗粒,通过电镜形态、理化特性和中和试验鉴定,确认分离病毒为轮状病毒。   相似文献

In fall 1991, a radio-collared black bear (Ursus americanus) in northern Labrador (Canada) died from valvular endocarditis caused by coagulase-positive Staphylococcus aureus, with widespread dissemination of the infection to other organs shortly before death. Apparently, this is the first reported case of bacterial valvular endocarditis in a wild black bear.  相似文献

To further validate the observation of the existence of host-adapted strains of Cryptosporidium parvum, we genetically characterized an isolate of Cryptosporidium parasite from a black bear. Sequence analysis of the ribosomal RNA small subunit and the 70-kDa heat shock protein (HSP70) showed that this parasite represents a new genotype of C. parvum and is related to the C. parvum dog genotype. This finding is helpful for clarifying Cryptosporidium taxonomy.  相似文献

We found trombiculid mite (Trombiculidae) infestations in 32 of 101 (32%) freeranging Florida black bears (Ursus americanus floridanus) live-captured or necropsied in Florida from January 1999 to April 2000. Prevalence of chigger infestation was greatest in June with no infestations seen October to March. Chigger infestations were recognized as accumulations of bright orange granular material usually associated with hair shafts. Mites were found in clusters of one to 102 (mean +/- SD = 8.5+/-19.5) and were distributed primarily over the ventral abdomen and thorax, inguinal and axillary regions, and proximal medial aspect of the extremities. Mites were identified as larval Eutrombicula splendens. Cutaneous lesions were seen in two of 32 (6%) infested bears.  相似文献

We determined the body composition from the carcasses of three 3- to 4-months-old polar bear cubs found dead at Svalbard, Norway. Two of the cubs were killed by a male bear at the den and one cub died from starvation. These three carcasses weighed 70-77% of total body mass of cubs. The ash and protein content of the three carcasses were similar but the starving cub had higher water content and lower fat content than the two killed cubs. The fat content varied from 1.3% (starving cub) to 12.9% while the content of water and fat was similar (about 76%) in the three cubs. More data on the body composition of polar bear cubs at time of emergence from the den are needed to understand the breeding ecology and reproductive energetics of female polar bears.  相似文献

We describe primers and polymerase chain reaction conditions to amplify 21 tetranucleotide microsatellite DNA loci in black bears (Ursus americanus). We tested primers using individuals from two populations, one each in Georgia and Florida. Among individuals from Georgia (n = 29), primer pairs yielded an average of 2.9 alleles (range, one to four) and an average observed heterozygosity (HO) of 0.50 (range, 0.00 to 0.79). Among individuals from Florida (n = 19), primer pairs yielded an average of 5.7 alleles (range, one to 14) and an HO of 0.55 (range, 0.00 to 1.00). A comparison of previously developed markers with individuals from Georgia suggests that bear populations in Georgia and Florida have reduced allelic diversity relative to other populations.  相似文献

By starch-gel electrophoresis and a staining method that is highly sensitive for argininyl residues, adenovirus type 5 was found to contain two minor basic polypeptides of extreme cathodic mobility in addition to the two known core proteins. The fastest-migrating polypeptide, named mu protein, and the second fastest polypeptide are found in adenovirions and virus-infected KB cells but not in top components or in uninfected cells. The top components and infected cells contain an additional basic polypeptide, presumably P-VII, that migrates slightly slower than polypeptide VII. None of the basic polypeptides of adenovirions was electrophoretically identical to the host histone. The basic proteins of adenovirions were purified by urea phosphocellulose column chromatography and characterized by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The two minor basic core proteins, mu and another component, have similar mobilities in sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gels as a complex of polypeptides X-XII. After further purification on a Sephadex G-75 column, the mu protein was found to have a molecular weight of about 4,000. Amino acid analysis showed that the mu protein lacks tryptophan and 69% of the total amino acid residues are basic, that is, 54% arginine, 13% histidine, and 2% lysine. Only eight amino acids seem to contribute to make the mu polypeptide. There are 125 copies of the mu polypeptide per 1,000 copies of polypeptide VII in a virion.  相似文献

Cryptosporidiosis has not been previously reported in black bears in North America, either free-roaming or captive. However, oocysts have been documented in two captive Malayan sun bears (Helarctos malayanus) located in zoological parks in Taiwan. Developmental stages of Cryptosporidium parvum were observed in tissue sections from the small intestine of a black bear cub found dead in Virginia (USA).  相似文献

Summary The contribution of glycerol to protein, carbohydrate, and lipid metabolism was studied in black bears. Special attention was directed at the role of glycerol in preventing uremia. In summer and winter, U-14C glycerol, as well asl(U14C)-alanine andd(U-14C)-glucose were injected intravenously; timed sampling of venous blood and expiratory gases was made.In winter, during hibernation,14C-label from glycerol was found in alanine and other free amino acids and plasma proteins, pyruvate, lactate, glucose and lipid esters. After 48 h, most of the14C-label in plasma was found in proteins. However, during the four days of study, no label was found in serum urea. Similar results occurred in summer except, in marked contrast to winter,14C-labeled urea was continually detected in blood. Expired14C-CO2 was considerably lower in winter than summer and winter respiratory quotient was 0.69.In both summer and winter,14C-labeled alanine also entered plasma proteins and generated pyruvate, lactate and glucose. Once again the marked difference between active and dormant phases was demonstrated: There was no labeled plasma urea in winter while it was continually detected in summer. 14C-labeled glucose experiments revealed very slow carbohydrate metabolism in winter.These findings suggest that in winter, glycerol helps prevent uremia by serving as a carbon source for amino acid formation. The nitrogen involved in these reactions is thus diverted from urea synthesis into protein synthetic pathways. Further, glycerol also appears to serve as an active substrate for gluconeogenesis and lipogenesis in hibernation.  相似文献

A population viability analysis (PVA) was conducted for a Japanese black bear population in Shimokita Peninsula, northern Japan, using an individual-based simulation model. Demographic stochasticity was incorporated in the model as well as the environmental stochasticity from the fluctuation of annual mast production. The extinction risk of the population was estimated with an emphasis on the effect of carrying capacity reduction and hunting pressure. The results suggest that the population has a high risk of extinction. Even if there is no further reduction of the carrying capacity and no hunting at all, the present size of the population cannot pass the test of the minimum viable population size (MVP) concept. Considering possible carrying capacity reduction in the future and actual hunting pressure, the population will fail to survive for 100 years at a very high probability. Because of deterioration of habitat and loss of the corridor between habitat areas, the population has become very sensitive to demographic impacts, including hunting pressure. Ten polymorphic microsatellite markers were developed for the endangered Formosan black bear (Ursus thibetanus formosanus) from a partial genomic library enriched for GAAA repeat. Polymorphism of these loci was evaluated in 27 Formosan black bear specimens of unknown relationship. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 5 to 15 and the observed heterozygosity of each locus ranged from 0.556 to 0.889. These loci should provide useful molecular tools to study conservation genetics of the Formosan black bear and other Asiatic black bears.  相似文献

By means of videotape, we observed and timed courtship, mating, and refractoriness in the American black bear while confined in a semicaptive environment. Sixty-six courtships resulted in mating. During courtship, the male detected estrus and receptivity in the female. Courtship lasted 22.5+/-2.3s (mean+/-S.E.M.). We videotaped and reviewed 61 matings that included mounts, pelvic thrusts, and flutters. Mating lasted 51.6+/-4.2s. Within these 61 matings, there were 24 pelvic thrusts and 14 flutters observed. Pelvic thrusts averaged 2.3+/-0.3 times, while flutters averaged 11.1+/-2.9 times. Of the 61 courtship-mating segments, 28 segments depicted a male refractory period, while 27 segments depicted a female refractory period. The male refractory period lasted 44.9+/-6.1s during which the male sat and licked his genital region. The female walked, ran away, or turned and attacked the male during her 54.2+/-8.3s refractory period. This is the first time a large number of paired ursid matings has been described and timed.  相似文献
