Tuber aestivum and Tuber uncinatum: two morphotypes or two species?   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Tuber spp. are ectomycorrhizal fungi that establish symbioses with shrubs and trees. Because of their different smell and taste, Tuber uncinatum and Tuber aestivum are two truffle morphotypes with a different market value, but whether or not T. uncinatum and T. aestivum are different taxa is still an open debate among mycologists. In order to identify molecular keys characterizing both T. aestivum and T. uncinatum morphotypes, ITS/RFLPs analyses were carried out on a large collection of samples from all over Italy and from other European countries, followed by a study of the phylogenesis of ITS, beta-tubulin and EF 1-alpha genes, on representative samples. The present study provides compelling evidence that: (i) T. uncinatum and T. aestivum belong to the same species, (ii) neither morphotype presents a specific molecular fingerprint, but they may even share identical alleles at any of the loci analysed; (iii) T. aestivum is most likely under a selfing reproductive mode. Our findings suggest that ecological, rather than genetic causes may account for differences in sporal morphology, taste and smell between T. aestivum and T. uncinatum truffles.  相似文献

Most studies on memory consolidation consider the new information as if it were imposed on a tabula rasa, but considerable evidence indicates that new memories must be interleaved within a large network of relevant pre-existing knowledge. Early studies on reconsolidation highlighted that a newly consolidated memory could be erased after reactivation, but new evidence has shown that an effective reactivation experience must also involve memory reorganization to incorporate new learning. The combination of these observations on consolidation and reconsolidation highlights the fundamental similarities of both phenomena as the integration of new information and old, and it suggests reconsolidation = consolidation as a neverending process of schema modification.  相似文献

Darwin’s first two, relatively complete, explicit articulations of his theorizing on evolution were his Essay of 1844 and On the Origin of Species published in 1859. A comparative analysis concludes that they espoused radically different theories despite exhibiting a continuity of strategy, much common structure and the same key idea. Both were theories of evolution by means of natural selection. In 1844, organic adaptation was confined to occasional intervals initiated and controlled by de-stabilization events. The modified descendants rebalanced the particular “plant and animal forms … unsettled by some alteration in their circumstances.” But by 1859, organic adaptation occurred continuously, potentially modifying the descendants of all organisms. Even natural selection, the persistent core of Darwin’s theorizing, does not prove to be a significant basis for theory similarity. Consequently, Darwin’s Origin theory cannot reasonably be considered as a mature version of the Essay. It is not a modification based on adjustments, further justifications and the integration of a Principle of Divergence. The Origin announced a new “scientific paradigm” while the Essay did little more than seemingly misconfigure the operation of a novel mechanism to extend varieties beyond their accepted bounds, and into the realm of possible new species. Two other collections of Darwin’s theorizing are briefly considered: his extensive notes of the late 1830s and his contributions to the famous meeting of 1 July 1858. For very different reasons, neither constitutes a challenge to the basis for this comparative study. It is concluded that, in addition to the much-debated social pressures, an unacknowledged further reason why Darwin did not publish his theorizing until 1859, could have been down to his perceptive technical judgement: wisely, he held back from rushing to publish demonstrably flawed theorizing.  相似文献

The association between obesity and hypertension is well documented, although the exact nature of this relation remains unclear. Sympathetic nervous and renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system activation appear to play an important role in the sodium and water retention, rightward shift in the pressure-natriuresis, and blood pressure elevation observed in obese individuals. Visceral obesity and the ectopic deposition of adipose tissue may be important in the activation of these systems and in the target organ damage that ensues. Weight loss is critical in the effective management of obesity hypertension and the accompanying target organ damage, although recidivism rates are high. However, prevention of weight gain should be the major priority for combating hypertension and its consequences in the future. The present review will provide an overview of our understanding of the etiology, pathophysiology, and treatment of obesity hypertension. Our focus is on the state of knowledge in humans. The potential role of abdominal obesity is considered throughout our review. We refer to relevant animal literature for supportive evidence and where little or no data in humans are available.  相似文献

TwoChenopodium species (C. album L.,C. suecicum J. Murr) were grown under field conditions with sugar beet to assess the weed-caused crop loss, and with spring wheat in a replacement series experiment. The weeds strongly reduced the growth of sugar beet. Dew's competition indexes for the regressions of sugar beet yield on weed density were 6.81 and 3.78 forC. suecicum andC. album respectively. On the other hand, the yield of spring wheat was not affected by the twoChenopodium species owing to early shading of the weeds by the faster growing crop stand.  相似文献

Several members of the Kalanchoë genus are popular as ornamental plants. Cross-breeding and wide hybridisation are essential to continuously introduce novel traits into cultivated plant material. This study aimed to identify the major factors related to the stigma affecting cross-pollination in the Kalanchoë blossfeldiana. Pollen tube growth after pollination of K. blossfeldiana ‘Jackie’ and ‘Reese’ was examined at different stigma developmental stages. Five distinct developmental stages were identified based on changes in morphology and activity of stigmatic peroxidase. After reciprocal pollination at the five stigma developmental stages, fluorescence microscopy was used to estimate the number of pollen tubes in situ. Both cultivars had receptive stigmas from stage I to IV, which concurred with the continuous expansion of the stigma covered with exudates. No pollen tube growth was observed at stage V for both cultivars. The number of pollen tubes was significantly higher in carpels pollinated at stage III, characterized by loose arrangement of the papillae and maximal amount of exudates, compared to all other developmental stages. Stigmas showing drying exudates and absence of peroxidase exhibited a relatively decreased number of pollen tubes in situ. No pollen tubes germinated on wilting stigmas. The arrangement of the papillae, the presence of exudates and peroxidase activity affected the number of pollen tubes in cross-pollination of K. blossfeldiana cultivars ‘Jackie’ and ‘Reese’. These results will help breeders to better select the optimal time for effective pollination. The findings may be applicable for other cultivars of K. blossfeldiana and relevant for different species of Kalanchoë.  相似文献

The esterified and unesterified sterol fractions of bee-gathered mixed pollens were examined, and total sterol composition was determined. Two new sterols of pollens, 14α-methyl-9β,19-cyclo-5α-cholest-24-en-3β-ol (24-dehydropollinastanol) and 14α-methyl-5α-ergost-24(28)-en-3β-ol (24-methylenepollinastanol) were isolated and identified. Both sterols were found primarily in the esterified sterol fraction, and 24-methylenepollinastanol accounted for 43% of the sterols of this fraction. 24-Dehydropollinastanol and four other sterols which also contain a 9β,19-cyclopropane ring were found only in the esterified sterol fraction. 24-Methylenecholesterol was the major sterol of the unesterified sterol fraction.  相似文献

Two novel bovineΒ-lactoglobulins I and J have been isolated from bovine milk and characterized by isoelectric focusing. Their primary structure was determined by a very rapid method consisting of a combination of Edman sequencing, mass analysis, and ladder sequencing by mass spectrometry. We found that both newΒ-lactoglobulins are of the bovineΒ-lactoglobulin B-variant type.Β-lactoglobulin I shows Gly instead of Glu at position 108, whereasΒ-lactoglobulin J shows a Pro-to-Leu exchange at position 126.  相似文献

The Molecular dynamics (MD) method was used to predict the thermal-stability and tensile properties of two single-walled Si nanotubes that are hydrogenated outside and both inside and outside respectively, i.e. the Sio–H and Siio–H nanotubes. Further, the axial-tensile properties of the two Si–H nanotubes were discussed by comparison with one (14,14) carbon nanotube. The obtained results show that: (1) the two Si–H nanotubes both have the Si skeletons with the structure similar to the {110} planes of single-crystal silicon, and they can stably exist only at the temperature lower than 200 and 125 K respectively and (2) the Sio–H and Siio–H nanotubes, respectively, have the tensile strength of 4.0 and 1.2 GPa as well as the fracture strain of 0.35 and 0.32; both their tensile strength and fracture strain are much lower than the corresponding ones of the (14,14) carbon-tube.  相似文献

Dysregulation of genes that control cell-cycle progression and DNA repair is a hallmark of tumorigenesis. It is becoming increasingly apparent, however, that these defects also contribute to degeneration of post-mitotic neurons under certain conditions. The gene for ataxia-telangiectasia mutated (ATM) is a prototype for this dual mechanism of action, with loss-of-function mutations causing not only selective degeneration of cerebellar neurons but also increased susceptibility to breast cancer and hematologic malignancy. Increased dosage of amyloid precursor protein in Down syndrome (trisomy 21) predisposes to dementia of Alzheimer type and may also contribute to acute leukemia and transient myeloproliferative disorder. The gene parkin, loss-of-function mutations in which account for about half of cases of early-onset Parkinson disease, has been identified as a candidate tumor suppressor gene by several groups. Parkin is deleted or downregulated in several tumor types, and its re-expression sensitizes derivative cell lines to inhibitors of cell-cycle progression. The overlap of molecular pathways implicated in cancer and neurodegeneration challenges long-held notions about differentiated cellular states and may open the door to novel therapeutic approaches to both groups of disorders.  相似文献

Summary A technique suitable for mapping ± stopping density distributions in patients or phantoms is described. As a position sensitive detector a multiwire proportional chamber with a slit or a hole collimator in front was applied. Results using a water and a Rando phantom are presented for various momenta and momentum band widths of the ± beam. To our knowledge the two-dimensional visualization of a stopping density distribution was realized for the first time.  相似文献

Summary Simultaneous production of endoglucanase and -glucosidase by using a synthetic two cistron system inEscherichia coli was attempted as a possible way of reducing production cost. The first cistron in this system we constructed is an endoglucanase gene fused to a tac promoter that provides for efficient expression. The second cistron is a -glucosidase structural gene. A ribosome binding site sequence of 33-base was inserted between the two cistron genes.E. coli cells transformed with the system produced 12.4 units/mg protein of endoglucanase and 327 units/mg protein of -glucosidase, which represent 15% and 22% of total cellular protein, respectively, in L medium within three hours after induction with IPTG.  相似文献

Proposals for increasing organ donation are often rejected as incompatible with altruistic motivation on the part of donors. This paper questions, on conceptual grounds, whether most organ donors really are altruistic. If we distinguish between altruism and solidarity--a more restricted form of other-concern, limited to members of a particular group--then most organ donors exhibit solidarity, rather than altruism. If organ donation really must be altruistic, then we have reasons to worry about the motives of existing donors. However, I argue that altruism is not necessary, because organ donation supplies important goods, whatever the motivation, and we can reject certain dubious motivations, such as financial profit, without insisting on altruism. Once solidaristic donation is accepted, certain reforms for increasing donation rates seem permissible. This paper considers two proposals. Firstly, it has been suggested that registered donors should receive priority for transplants. While this proposal appears based on a solidaristic norm of reciprocity, it is argued that such a scheme would be undesirable, since non-donors may contribute to society in other ways. The second proposal is that donors should be able to direct their organs towards recipients that they feel solidarity with. This is often held to be inconsistent with altruistic motivation, but most donation is not entirely undirected in the first place (for instance, donor organs usually go to co-nationals). While allowing directed donation would create a number of practical problems, such as preventing discrimination, there appears to be no reason in principle to reject it.  相似文献

Sterols, essential components of eukaryotic membranes, are actively transported between cellular membranes. Although it is known that both vesicular and non-vesicular means are used to move sterols, the molecules and molecular mechanisms involved have yet to be identified. Recent studies point to a key role for oxysterol binding protein (OSBP) and its related proteins (ORPs) in nonvesicular sterol transport. Here, evidence that OSBP and ORPs are bona fide sterol carriers is discussed. In addition, I hypothesize that ATPases associated with various cellular activities regulate the recycling of soluble lipid carriers and that the Niemann Pick C1 protein facilitates the delivery of sterols from endosomal membranes to ORPs and/or the ensuing membrane dissociation of ORPs.  相似文献
