This paper introduces a generic decision-making framework for assigning resources of a manufacturing system to production tasks. Resources are broadly defined production units, such as machines, human operators, or material handling vehicles; and tasks are activities performed by resources. In the specific context of FMS, resources correspond to individual machines; tasks correspond to operations to be performed on parts. The framework assumes a hierarchical structure of the system and calls for the execution of four consecutive steps to make a decision for the assignment of a resource to a task. These steps are 1) establishment of decision-making criteria, 2) formation of alternative assignments, 3) estimation of the consequences of the assignments, and 4) selection of the best alternative assignment. This framework has been applied to an existing FMS as an operational policy that decides what task will be executed on which resource of this FMS. Simulation runs provide some initial results of the application of this policy. It is shown that the policy provides flexibility in terms of system performance and computational effort.  相似文献

We have designed a set of protocols that use peer-to-peer techniques to efficiently implement a distributed and decentralized desktop grid. Incoming jobs with different resource requirements are matched with system nodes through proximity in an N-dimensional Content-Addressable Network, where each resource type is represented as a distinct dimension. In this paper, we describe a comprehensive suite of techniques that cooperate to maximize throughput, and to ensure that load is balanced across all peers. We balance load induced by job executions through randomly generated virtual dimension values, which act to disaggregate clusters of nodes/jobs, and also by a job pushing mechanism based on an approximate global view of the system. We improve upon initial job assignments by using a job-stealing mechanism to overcome load imbalance caused by heterogeneity of nodes/jobs and stale load information. We also describe a set of optimizations that combine to reduce the system load created by the management of the underlying peer-to-peer system and the job-monitoring infrastructure. Unlike other systems, we can effectively support resource constraints of jobs during the course of load balancing since we simplify the problem of matchmaking through building a multi-dimensional resource space and mapping jobs and nodes to this space. We use extensive simulation results to show that the new techniques improve scalability, system throughput, and average response time.  相似文献

This paper introduces a framework for animal abundance estimation in independent observer line transect surveys of clustered populations. The framework generalizes an approach given in Chen (1999, Environmental and Ecological Statistics 6, in press) to accommodate heterogeneity in detection caused by cluster size and other covariates. Both parametric and nonparametric estimators for the local effective search widths, given the covariates, can be derived from the framework. A nonparametric estimator based on conditional kernel density estimation is proposed and studied owing to its flexibility in modeling the detection functions. A real data set on harbor porpoise in the North Sea is analyzed.  相似文献

The paper first divides control rights of critical resources into government macroeconomic regulation power and insider control power for the management. After the discussion of the current status of Chinese coal industry integration, the paper mathematically and empirically analyzes influences of the government and state owned enterprises’ management to ownership’s boundary, and suggests the optimal ownership in different cases. The contributions of the paper are as follows: (1) Based on incomplete contract theory, the paper builds two mathematical models -the model of management’s investment level of relationship-specific human capital and ownership boundary model demonstrating the government utility under different ownership cases; (2) With the application of numerical simulation and empirical test, the paper analyzes impacts on coal resource integration from the aspects of government regulation and insider control, and discusses the optimal option of ownerships. By the analysis of the control power and ownership boundary based on the models, the paper eventually raises the optimal option of ownership allocation.  相似文献

Home range area is influenced by the spatio‐temporal distribution of multiple resources, but current theoretical frameworks such as the habitat productivity and resource dispersion hypotheses fail to account for this adequately. We propose a conceptual framework for quantifying the influence of multiple resources on home range area where separate resources interact to form a continuous, multi‐dimensional resource surface exhibiting an emergent environmental pattern. We adopt the term resource heterogeneity to describe this pattern, and predict that home range area will be more closely correlated with resource heterogeneity than with simple additive or interactive effects of separate resources. Initially, we quantified resource heterogeneity as the geometric mean of resource abundance, and tested the performance of this index against simulated low, moderate and high heterogeneity scenarios. In all cases, the geometric mean reflected the modelled scenarios well, demonstrating its utility as a heterogeneity index. We then quantified shelter and food resources within the home ranges of swamp wallabies Wallabia bicolor, and used these data in a generalised linear mixed modelling framework to test our prediction. Based on Akaike's information criterion (AICc), the best model included the main effect of sex and the heterogeneity index. Although model selection uncertainty was relatively high (largest Akaike weight=0.37), the AICc value associated with the best model was 2.41 units less than the highest ranked model including shelter and food, indicating support for our prediction. Home range area was negatively correlated with resource heterogeneity, and males had larger home ranges than females (37.6 (28.5, 49.7) ha compared to 17.2 (13.6, 21.7) ha; mean and 95% CLs). We suggest that statistical models of home range area parameterised using an index of resource heterogeneity will often be superior to those that focus on a single resource, or fail to take the heterogeneity of multiple resources into account.  相似文献

A Grid-Federation environment is composed of a collection of autonomous and selfish distributed cluster resource managers. These selfish managers participate in Grid-Federation to share their resources. Market models could be used to motivate the self-interested participants to share their resources. In this paper, firstly, a market for resource exchange in grid federation environment is established. Then, in order that the market reaches a Walrasian equilibrium, a computationally tractable mechanism is proposed. A Walrasian equilibrium problem consists of finding a set of prices and allocations of resources in such a way that the cluster resource managers could maximize their utilities and the market clears. Market clears when the resource supply equals to the demand. We show that in a Walrasian equilibrium, the Grid Federation market reaches an efficient resource allocation.  相似文献

Condor-G: A Computation Management Agent for Multi-Institutional Grids   总被引:32,自引:0,他引:32  
In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of available computing and storage resources. Yet few tools exist that allow these resources to be exploited effectively in an aggregated form. We present the Condor-G system, which leverages software from Globus and Condor to enable users to harness multi-domain resources as if they all belong to one personal domain. We describe the structure of Condor-G and how it handles job management, resource selection, security, and fault tolerance. We also present results from application experiments with the Condor-G system. We assert that Condor-G can serve as a general-purpose interface to Grid resources, for use by both end users and higher-level program development tools.  相似文献

Understanding the factors that determine the allocation and utilization of organism resources may provide an insight into the mechanisms of adaptation, ageing and reproduction. Resource allocation, which is regarded as a method of adaptation, increases fitness and is genetically controlled. Experiments with variable diet feeding of female Mediterranean fruitflies (Ceratitis capitata) demonstrated that the feeding regime dramatically influences lifespan, mortality and the reproduction of flies. An analysis of experimental data and numerical experiments reveals that resource allocation could explain lifespan increase when females are switched from a sugar-only to a protein-containing diet. The heterogeneity of the initial female cohort in terms of the total amount of resources and its allocation to the processes of maintenance and reproduction plays a significant role in this.  相似文献

农业面源污染因其分散性、滞后性和不确定性而成为环境治理的难点。面源污染物迁移转化过程的模拟模型发展迅速,而农业面源污染管理政策仿真评估模型研究相对较为滞后。系统梳理与分析了自上而下宏观目标约束、自下而上微观行为传导及宏观与微观上下耦合三类政策仿真模型研究进展,总结了当前模型的基础理论与方法的优势与不足。本文提出了融合流域水系统过程规律认知,构建宏观政策目标自上而下约束与微观主体行为自下而上传导耦合的农业面源污染政策仿真模型,实现政策仿真模拟在国家、区域、流域与栅格跨尺度上的嵌套传导、参数互验与系统预测,以解决因农业面源污染防治主体的多元性与防治对象的广泛性特征所导致的复杂性系统难题,使得政策效应模拟仿真结果空间显性化,进而实现农业面源污染控制的政策管理由粗放型向精准化方向迈进。  相似文献

Environmental change is accelerating due to anthropogenic influence. Species that have greater behavioral flexibility may be better adapted to exploit new or constantly changing habitats. There are few mammals and even fewer carnivores that better illustrate widespread adaptability and behavioral flexibility in the wake of human disturbance than coyotes (Canis latrans). Yet how such predators successfully track resources, enabling them to survive and extend their range in stochastic environments remains unknown. We tested eight wild-born, captive coyotes individually on an operant two-choice test using concurrent variable interval (VI) schedules. We held the overall rate of reinforcement constant but manipulated the ratio of reinforcement available from the two choices. We analyzed sensitivity of coyotes’ tracking of resource change by fitting the generalized matching equation to the data. Results showed all coyotes efficiently tracked changes in reinforcement ratios within the first few sessions of each new condition and matched their relative rate of foraging time to relative rate of resources. We suggest the matching paradigm provides a methodology to explore coyote foraging strategies, and a potential framework to compare behavioral flexibility across species, by measuring the ability to track resource change under variable resource conditions.  相似文献

To date, bioethics and health policy scholarship has given little consideration to questions of aging and intergenerational justice in the developing world. Demographic changes are precipitating rapid population aging in developing nations, however, and ethical issues regarding older people's claim to scarce healthcare resources must be addressed. This paper posits that the traditional arguments about generational justice and age-based rationing of healthcare resources, which were developed primarily in more industrialized nations, fail to adequately address the unique challenges facing older persons in developing nations. Existing philosophical approaches to age-based resource allocation underemphasize the importance of older persons for developing countries and fail to adequately consider the rights and interests of older persons in these settings. Ultimately, the paper concludes that the most appropriate framework for thinking about generational justice in developing nations is a rights-based approach that allows for the interests of all age groups, including the oldest, to be considered in the determination of health resource allocation.  相似文献

Increased platform heterogeneity and varying resource availability in distributed systems motivate the design of resource-aware applications, which ensure a desired performance level by continuously adapting their behavior to changing resource characteristics. In this paper, we describe an application-independent adaptation framework that simplifies the design of resource-aware applications. This framework eliminates the need for adaptation decisions to be explicitly programmed into the application by relying on two novel components: (1) a tunability interface, which exposes adaptation choices in the form of alternate application configurations while encapsulating core application functionality; and (2) a virtual execution environment, which emulates application execution under diverse resource availability enabling off-line collection of information about resulting behavior. Together, these components permit automatic run-time decisions on when to adapt by continuously monitoring resource conditions and application progress, and how to adapt by dynamically choosing an application configuration most appropriate for the prescribed user preference. We evaluate the framework using an interactive distributed image visualization application and a parallel image processing application. The framework permits automatic adaptation to changes in execution environment characteristics such as available network bandwidth or data arrival pattern by choosing a different application configuration that satisfies user preferences of output quality and timeliness.  相似文献

New ‘omics’ technologies are changing nutritional sciences research. They enable to tackle increasingly complex questions but also increase the need for collaboration between research groups. An important challenge for successful collaboration is the management and structured exchange of information that accompanies data-intense technologies. NuGO, the European Nutrigenomics Organization, the major collaborating network in molecular nutritional sciences, is supporting the application of modern information technologies in this area. We have developed and implemented a concept for data management and computing infrastructure that supports collaboration between nutrigenomics researchers. The system fills the gap between “private” storing with occasional file sharing by email and the use of centralized databases. It provides flexible tools to share data, also during experiments, while preserving ownership. The NuGO Information Network is a decentral, distributed system for data exchange based on standard web technology. Secure access to data, maintained by the individual researcher, is enabled by web services based on the the BioMoby framework. A central directory provides information about available web services. The flexibility of the infrastructure allows a wide variety of services for data processing and integration by combining several web services, including public services. Therefore, this integrated information system is suited for other research collaborations.  相似文献

Life histories vary widely among taxa, but within phylogenetic groups there may be a fundamental framework around which trait variation is organized, perhaps as a consequence of lineage-specific developmental constraints. In organisms with indeterminate growth, there is an ongoing problem of optimally allocating resources between growth and reproduction, and that allocation decision may manifest itself through allometric scaling. Previous work on freshwater zooplankton has shown that the ontogenetic pattern of resource allocation can be described by simple mathematical functions. An important component of understanding how such functions can explain life-history variation is to discover which parameters in these functions are robust, with respect to both resource availability and evolutionary diversification, and which parameters exhibit interspecific allometry. To shed light on these issues, detailed life table experiments were conducted on eight species in the family Daphniidae (Crustacea) at high and low levels of resources. Using data on growth, reproduction, and instar duration, the ontogeny of resource allocation to growth and reproduction could be described as functions that plateau at or shortly after the onset of maturity. To be sure that the results were not an artifact of phylogenetic structure, the parameters were tested in a phylogenetically controlled fashion. The results suggest a simple set of resource allocation rules for daphniids, whereby all species exhibit a similar form of ontogenetic change in allocation, and reach a plateau where approximately 94% of available resources are allocated to reproduction. The asymptotically maximal rate of net resources incorporated in growth and reproduction was positively related to size at maturity, whereas the rates of approach to plateaus (for both net resource assimilation and proportional allocation to reproduction) were negatively related to body size. Per-offspring investment was positively related to the square root of size at maturity. Using this approach, a wide range of interspecific variation in life-history features can be related to a single underlying trait, the size at first reproductive investment.  相似文献

Animals select resources to maximize fitness but associated costs and benefits are spatially and temporally variable. Differences in wetland management influence resource availability for ducks and mortality risk from duck hunting. The local distribution of the Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) is affected by this resource heterogeneity and variable risk from hunting. Regional conservation strategies primarily focus on how waterfowl distributions are affected by food resources during the nonbreeding season. To test if Mallard resource selection was related to the abundance of resources, risks, or a combination, we studied resource selection of adult female Mallards during autumn and winter. We developed a digital spatial layer for Lake St. Clair, Ontario, Canada, that classified resources important to Mallards and assigned these resources a risk level based on ownership type and presumed disturbance from hunting. We monitored 59 individuals with GPS back‐pack transmitters prior to, during, and after the hunting season and used discrete choice modeling to generate diurnal and nocturnal resource selection estimates. The model that classified available resources and presumed risk best explained Mallard resource selection strategies. Resource selection varied within and among seasons. Ducks selected for federal, state and private managed wetland complexes that provided an intermediate or relatively greater amount of refuge and foraging options than public hunting areas. Across all diel periods and seasons, there was selection for federally managed marshes and private supplemental feeding refuges that prohibited hunting. Mallard resource selection demonstrated trade‐offs related to the management of mortality risk, anthropogenic disturbances, and foraging opportunities. Understanding how waterfowl respond to heterogeneous landscapes of resources and risks can inform regional conservation strategies related to waterfowl distribution during the nonbreeding season.  相似文献

Fitness depends on both the resources that individuals acquire and the allocation of those resources to traits that influence survival and reproduction. Optimal resource allocation differs between females and males as a consequence of their fundamentally different reproductive strategies. However, because most traits have a common genetic basis between the sexes, conflicting selection between the sexes over resource allocation can constrain the evolution of optimal allocation within each sex, and generate trade‐offs for fitness between them (i.e. ‘sexual antagonism’ or ‘intralocus sexual conflict’). The theory of resource acquisition and allocation provides an influential framework for linking genetic variation in acquisition and allocation to empirical evidence of trade‐offs between distinct life‐history traits. However, these models have not considered the emergence of trade‐offs within the context of sexual dimorphism, where they are expected to be particularly common. Here, we extend acquisition–allocation theory and develop a quantitative genetic framework for predicting genetically based trade‐offs between life‐history traits within sexes and between female and male fitness. Our models demonstrate that empirically measurable evidence of sexually antagonistic fitness variation should depend upon three interacting factors that may vary between populations: (1) the genetic variances and between‐sex covariances for resource acquisition and allocation traits, (2) condition‐dependent expression of resource allocation traits and (3) sex differences in selection on the allocation of resource to different fitness components.  相似文献

Invasive species are a cause for concern in natural and economic systems and require both monitoring and management. There is a trade‐off between the amount of resources spent on surveying for the species and conducting early management of occupied sites, and the resources that are ultimately spent in delayed management at sites where the species was present but undetected. Previous work addressed this optimal resource allocation problem assuming that surveys continue despite detection until the initially planned survey effort is consumed. However, a more realistic scenario is often that surveys stop after detection (i.e., follow a “removal” sampling design) and then management begins. Such an approach will indicate a different optimal survey design and can be expected to be more efficient. We analyze this case and compare the expected efficiency of invasive species management programs under both survey methods. We also evaluate the impact of mis‐specifying the type of sampling approach during the program design phase. We derive analytical expressions that optimize resource allocation between monitoring and management in surveillance programs when surveys stop after detection. We do this under a scenario of unconstrained resources and scenarios where survey budget is constrained. The efficiency of surveillance programs is greater if a “removal survey” design is used, with larger gains obtained when savings from early detection are high, occupancy is high, and survey costs are not much lower than early management costs at a site. Designing a surveillance program disregarding that surveys stop after detection can result in an efficiency loss. Our results help guide the design of future surveillance programs for invasive species. Addressing program design within a decision‐theoretic framework can lead to a better use of available resources. We show how species prevalence, its detectability, and the benefits derived from early detection can be considered.  相似文献

Many animal species have morphological and cognitive adaptations for fighting with others to gain resources, but it remains unclear how humans make fighting decisions. Non-human animals adaptively calibrate fighting behavior to ecological variables such as resource quantity and resource distribution. Also, many species reduce fighting costs by resolving disputes based on power asymmetries or conventions. Here we show that humans apply an ownership convention in response to the problem of costly fighting. We designed a virtual environment where participants, acting as avatars, could forage and fight for electronic food items (convertible to cash). In two experimental conditions, resources were distributed uniformly or clustered in patches. In the patchy condition, we observed an ownership convention — the avatar who arrives first is more likely to win — but in the uniform condition, where costly fights are rare, the ownership convention is absent.  相似文献

Acquisition and allocation of resources are central to life‐history theory. However, empirical work typically focuses only on allocation despite the fact that relationships between fitness components may be governed by differences in the ability of individuals to acquire resources across environments. Here, we outline a statistical framework to partition the genetic basis of multivariate plasticity into independent axes of genetic variation, and quantify for the first time, the extent to which specific traits drive multitrait genotype–environment interactions. Our framework generalises to analyses of plasticity, growth and ageing. We apply this approach to a unique, large‐scale, multivariate study of acquisition, allocation and plasticity in the life history of the cricket, Gryllus firmus. We demonstrate that resource acquisition and allocation are genetically correlated, and that plasticity in trade‐offs between allocation to components of fitness is 90% dependent on genetic variance for total resource acquisition. These results suggest that genotype–environment effects for resource acquisition can maintain variation in life‐history components that are typically observed in the wild.  相似文献
