Protean     
The archaeal, bacterial, andeukaryotic genome projects have overwhelmed our ability to experimentally elucidate the function of each novel gene and gene product. To a certain extent, protein functional assignments can be derived via sequence similarity measures and direct primary sequence analysis using methods to predict hydropathy, secondary structure, amphilicity, and antigenicity. Function can also be inferred on the basis of sequence motifs, such as phosphorylation and lipid binding signatures. These methods, provided in DNASTAR’s PROTEAN module, can be used to putatively assign roles for novel proteins from the genome explosion as well as clarify function for better known proteins.  相似文献

Chemically defended insects advertise their unpalatability to avian predators using conspicuous aposematic coloration that predators learn to avoid. Insects utilize a wide variety of different compounds in their defences, and intraspecific variation in defence chemistry is common. We propose that polymorphisms in insect defence chemicals may be beneficial to insects by increasing survival from avian predators. Birds learn to avoid a colour signal faster when individual prey possesses one of two unpalatable chemicals rather than all prey having the same defence chemical. However, for chemical polymorphisms to evolve within a species, there must be benefits that allow rare chemical morphs to increase in frequency. Using domestic chicks as predators and coloured crumbs for prey, we provide evidence that birds taste and reject proportionally more of the individuals with rare defence chemicals than those with common defence chemicals. This indicates that the way in which birds attack and reject prey could enhance the survival of rare chemical morphs and select for chemical polymorphism in aposematic species. This is the first experiment to demonstrate that predators can directly influence the form taken by prey's chemical defences.  相似文献

Predator and prey relationships are dynamic and interrelated. Thus, any offensive behaviour will vary according to differing defensive behaviours, or vice versa, within each species in any predator–prey system. However, most studies are one‐sided as they focus on just one behaviour, that of either the predator or prey. Here, we examine both predatory behaviour of an oophagus katydid and antipredator behaviour by a frog with egg‐stage parental care. Katydid offensive behaviour and predation success was greater in females and increased with predator maturity and size. Frog defensive behaviour was sex specific, probably because only mothers provide parental care. Defensive behaviour could be active, such as charging predators, or passive, such as sheltering eggs, with greater active defence against larger predators; neither was influenced by offspring age. These results are contrary to existing theory, which argues parental investment ought to be negatively correlated with parental predation risks and affected by offspring age. This study highlights the use of antipredator behaviour to test predictions of parental investment theories in amphibians. In addition, it illustrates the need to consider factors that influence both species concurrently when examining the complex interaction between predators and parents.  相似文献

1. Predator (laboratory-grown Asplanchna girodi and prey (several field-collected non-carnivorous rotifer species) interactions were studied in the laboratory as a function of both predator and prey densities. The clearance rates of A, girodi decreased with increasing prey density. Predator density had no effect on the feeding of A. girodi. 2. Asplanchna girodi selectively fed on Keratella cochlearis. Its clearance rates for K. cochlearis were much higher than those for Polyarthra and Brachionus. Short-spined forms (spine length less than 25 μm) showed a significantly higher susceptibility to predation than either the non-spined or the long-spined forms. 3. Large Asplanchna individuals fed selectively on reproductive females of K. cochlearis, thereby reducing the fecundity of their prey.  相似文献

Avian predators learn to avoid defended insects on the basis of their conspicuous warning coloration. In many aposematic species, the level of chemical defence varies, with some individuals being more defended than others. Sequestration and production of defence chemicals is often costly and therefore less defended individuals enjoy the benefits of the warning signal without paying the full costs of chemical production. This is a fundamental theoretical problem for the evolutionary stability of aposematism, since less defended individuals appear to be at a selective advantage. However, if predators sample aposematic prey and selectively reject individuals on the basis of their chemical investment, aposematism could become evolutionarily stable. Previous research aimed at testing whether birds can use taste to discriminate between palatable and unpalatable prey has been confounded by other experimental factors. Here, we show that birds can taste and reject prey entirely on the basis of an individual's level of chemical defence and more importantly, they can make decisions on whether or not to consume a defended individual based upon their level of chemical investment. We discuss these results in relation to the evolution of aposematism, mimicry and defence chemistry.  相似文献

Adhesive devices are used by arthropods not only in terrestrial locomotion but also in prey capture and predator defence. We argue that the physical mechanisms involved in both these contexts must mainly be capillarity and the viscosity of an adhesive secretion, whereas other mechanisms, such as friction or intermolecular forces, are of minor importance. Adhesive prey-capture devices might function as passive devices or might be actively extended toward the prey, sometimes in a very rapid manner. Adhesive mechanisms used for predator defence might involve firm adhesion to the substratum or the discharge of a sticky secretion to immobilize the appendages of the opponent. We review the occurrence of adhesive devices as employed in both functional contexts across the Arthropoda and argue that these mechanisms are of particular importance for slow-moving and relatively clumsy life forms. We discuss three case studies in more detail. (1) Loricera larvae (Carabidae) use galeae with an extremely flexible cuticle in combination with an adhesive secretion. (2) Adult Stenus species (Staphylinidae) employ two highly flexible paraglossae that are covered by an adhesive emulsion of lipid droplets dispersed in an aqueous proteinaceous liquid. (3) Springtails often adhere to the mouthparts, the antennae, the legs, or other parts of the integument of Stenus larvae before being captured with the mandibles.  相似文献

The effect of predator and prey density on the induced defence of a ciliate   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
1. The level of antipredator defence should be proportional to the actual attack probability to minimize the cost of defence and maximize the net benefit.
2. The hypothesis that the induced antipredator morphology of Euplotes octocarinatus is a graded response to the actual risk of predation by Stylonychia mytilus was tested by manipulating the density of both prey and predator populations.
3. The magnitude of the response was graded according to both predator and prey density. A dense prey population may be protective since a prey is more exposed to a predator's attack as a solitary individual.
4. The results suggest that Euplotes is able to 'estimate' the real risk of predation and respond appropriately, without mobilizing more resources than needed.
5. Separation of the prey and predator with a nylon net revealed that the response was not induced by a water-transmitted factor but that direct cell-to-cell contacts were important. This finding departs from those of other studies.  相似文献

Germline mutations distributed across the PTEN tumor-suppressor gene have been found to result in a wide spectrum of phenotypic features. Originally shown to be a major susceptibility gene for both Cowden syndrome (CS), which is characterized by multiple hamartomas and an increased risk of breast, thyroid, and endometrial cancers, and Bannayan-Riley-Ruvalcaba syndrome, which is characterized by lipomatosis, macrocephaly, and speckled penis, the PTEN hamartoma tumor syndrome spectrum has broadened to include Proteus syndrome and Proteus-like syndromes. Exon 5, which encodes the core motif, is a hotspot for mutations likely due to the biology of the protein. PTEN is a major lipid 3-phosphatase, which signals down the PI3 kinase/AKT pro-apoptotic pathway. Furthermore, PTEN is a protein phosphatase, with the ability to dephosphorylate both serine and threonine residues. The protein-phosphatase activity has also been shown to regulate various cell-survival pathways, such as the mitogen-activated kinase (MAPK) pathway. Although it is well established that PTEN's lipid-phosphatase activity, via the PI3K/AKT pathway, mediates growth suppression, there is accumulating evidence that the protein-phosphatase/MAPK pathway is equally important in the mediation of growth arrest and other crucial cellular functions.  相似文献

In summer 2007, with the help of a written questionnaire, the attitudes of more than 400 visitors to the zoological garden of Zurich, Switzerland, toward the idea of feeding live insects to lizards, live fish to otters, and live rabbits to tigers were investigated. The majority of Swiss zoo visitors agreed with the idea of feeding live prey (invertebrates and vertebrates) to zoo animals, both off‐ and on‐exhibit, except in the case of feeding live rabbits to tigers on‐exhibit. Women and frequent visitors of the zoo disagreed more often with the on‐exhibit feeding of live rabbits to tigers. Study participants with a higher level of education were more likely to agree with the idea of feeding live invertebrates and vertebrates to zoo animals off‐exhibit. In comparison to an earlier study undertaken in Scotland, zoo visitors in Switzerland were more often in favor of the live feeding of vertebrates. Feeding live prey can counter the loss of hunting skills of carnivores and improve the animals' well‐being. However, feeding enrichments have to strike a balance between optimal living conditions of animals and the quality of visitor experience. Our results show that such a balance can be found, especially when live feeding of mammals is carried out off‐exhibit. A good interpretation of food enrichment might help zoos to win more support for the issue, and for re‐introduction programs and conservation. 1. The ciliate Euplotes octocarinatus responds to the presence of Stylonychia mytilus with a morphological transformation rendering its ingestion more difficult. Predation on Euplotes is reduced when an alternative prey, the flagellate Chlorogonium elongatum, is available. Lower predation is accompanied by reduced induction in Euplotes. 2. We quantified the motility of both ciliates in the presence and absence of Chlorogonium to test the hypothesis that the differential response in Euplotes is a consequence of behavioural changes affecting the encounter rate of the prey and the predator. 3. The results indicate that S. mytilus uses different feeding strategies for each prey. It is a filter feeder when small food particles (Chlorogonium) are abundant, however, it becomes a raptorial feeder when large prey with an escape capability (Euplotes) is available and small alternative prey are absent. 4. As the mobility of filter feeding Stylonychia is strongly limited, the presence of the flagellate may indirectly affect the defence level in Euplotes by reducing the frequency of contacts with the predator. 5. An experiment with Chaetogaster diastrophus, a more specialised predator not affected by the presence of Chlorogonium, as well as direct manipulation of the encounter rate by changing the surface area available for the crawling ciliates, supported the encounter rate hypothesis.  相似文献

Two hundred UK zoo visitors were asked about their attitudes regarding the feeding of live prey to zoo animals. All visitors agreed with live insects being fed to lizards, providing it was done off-exhibit, and only 4% objected if done on-exhibit. Seventy-two percent of visitors agreed with live fish being fed to penguins on-exhibit and 84.5% agreed to feeding live fish off-exhibit. However, only 32% agreed to a live rabbit being fed to a cheetah on exhibit, whereas 62.5% agreed to this if done off-exhibit. In general we found female interviewees more likely to object to the feeding of live vertebrate prey. Comments volunteered by interviewees suggested that they agreed with feeding live vertebrate prey because ‘it is natural’. If they objected, it was because ‘it would upset them or their children’. Inducible defences are widely used for studying phenotypic plasticity, yet frequently we know little about the cues that induce these defences. For aquatic prey, defences are induced by chemical cues from predators (kairomones) and injured prey (alarm cues). Rarely has anyone determined the separate and combined effects of these cues, particularly across phylogenetically diverse prey types. We examined how tadpoles (Hyla versicolor) altered their defences when 10 different prey were either crushed by hand or consumed by predators. Across all prey types, crushing induced only a subset of the defences induced by consumption. Consuming vs. crushing produced additive responses for behaviour but synergistic responses for morphology and growth. Moreover, we discovered the first extensive evidence that prey responses to different alarm cues depends on prey phylogeny. These results suggest that the amount of information available to the prey affects both the quantitative and qualitative nature of the defended phenotype.  相似文献

Organisms often perceive risk to be attacked by natural enemies through cues that accompany or persist after attacks on conspecifics. Under the risk of attack, preys may prioritize anti-enemy behaviours, sacrificing their feeding activities. These enemy-induced changes can affect the prey population growth. The presence of killed congeners is a past attack events cue but, in terrestrial prey–enemy systems, its effect on prey population biology is an open question. This was addressed here by studying both the space use and reproductive effort of aphids exposed to congeners killed by parasitoids. To test whether preys adjust their responses with the threat intensity, aphids' responses in presence of killed conspecifics were compared to those measured when directly exposed to non-consumptive parasitoids. The results showed that killed congeners are perceived by aphids and led to both changes in their space use and a strong decline in their population size. This experiment is the first to demonstrate that the presence of congeners killed by an enemy can contribute to the suppressive effects of natural enemies on prey populations.  相似文献
