A planktonic alga similar in general morphology and pigments to Aureococcus anophagefferens Hargraves and Sieburth has caused persistent and ecologically damaging blooms along the south Texas coast. Experiments using 100 μM NO3?, NO2?, and NH4+ demonstrated that the alga could not use NO3? for growth but could use NO2? and NH4+. Doubling iron or trace metal concentrations did not permit growth on NO3?. Chemical composition data for cultures grown in excess NO3? or NH4+, respectively, were as follows: N·cell?1 (0.88 vs. 1.3 pg), C:N ratio (25:1 vs. 6.4:1), C:chlorophyll a (chl a) (560:1 vs. 44:1), and chl a·cell?1 (0.033 vs. 0.16 pg). These data imply that cells supplied with NO3? were N-starved. Culture addition of 10 mM final concentration chlorate (a nitrate analog) did not affect the Texas isolate while NO3? utilizing A. anophagefferens was lysed, suggesting that the NO3? reductase of the Texas isolate is nonfunctional. Rates of primary productivity determined during a dense bloom indicated that light-saturated growth rates were ca. 0.45 d?1, which is similar to maximum rates determined in laboratory experiments (0.58 d?1± 0.16). However, chemical composition data were consistent with the growth rate of these cells being limited by N availability (C:N 28, C:chl a 176, chl a·cell?1 0.019). Calculations based on a mass balance for nitrogen suggest that the bloom was triggered by an input of ca. 69 μM NH4+ that resulted from an extensive die-off of benthos and fish.  相似文献

The plasma membrane H+-ATPase pump (Pma1p) has been proposed as a viable target for antifungal drugs since this high capacity proton pump plays a critical role in the intracellular regulation of pH and in nutrient uptake of yeast and other fungi. In recent years, this and other laboratories have verified that the antifungal activity of 2-phenylbenzisoselenazol-3(2H)-one, an organoselenium compound commonly referred to as ebselen (1), stems, at least in part, from its inhibitory action on the fungal Pma1p. In the present study, the antifungal efficacy of 2-(3-pyridinyl)-benzisoselenazol-3(2H)-one (2) and 2-phenylbenzisoselenazol-3(2H)-one 1-oxide (3), two ebselen analogs, was evaluated using a strain of S. cerevisiae and compared against that of 1. In addition, the study also examined the inhibitory potential of these three compounds toward the Pma1p of S. cerevisiae. Based on mean IC50 values, the antifungal potency was found to decrease in the order 3?>?1?>?2. However, in terms of inhibitory action on Pma1p, the potency decreased in the order 1?>?3?>?2. The magnitude of these activities appears to be correlated with the corresponding log P values, with compound 2 being the most hydrophilic and the least active of the three.  相似文献

The seasonal abundance of epilithic algae was correlated with major physico-chemical parameters in a first-order, heavily shaded stream in northern Arizona. Diatoms made up over 85%, by numerical abundance, of the epilithon community Light energy, water temperature, and stream discharge were most highly correlated with seasonal abundance of epilithic diatom taxa when analyzed with stepwise multiple regression. None of the chemical variables measured in the study (NO3-N, O-PO4, SiO2, including PH) was found to be significantly correlated with the seasonal community structure of epilithic diatoms. Total diatom cell densities showed a significant negative correlation to stream bed light energy. Likewise, total diatom cell densities along a transect in the stream bed showed a negative correlation to current velocity during those months when base flow was low and stable, and current velocity was ≤25 cm·sec-1. Most diatom taxa had highest cell densities at temperatures < 16°C and at daily mean stream bed light levels < 400 μE·m?2·s?1. Highest cell densities of green algae occurred at temperatures between 6–16°C and at daily mean stream bed light levels of > 400 μE·m?2·s?1. Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) grew best at the highest recorded water temperatures and daily mean stream bed light energy (16–20°C and 900–1200 μE·m?2·s?1). Abrupt increases in NO3-N coincided with a brief pulse of Nostoc pruniforme colonies during June, and leaf drop from Alnus oblongifolia during October.  相似文献

Summary

Selected limnological attributes of the Okavango Delta panhandle were measured during a brief summer survey of “open-water” habitats extending from the permanent mainstream channel, through contiguous off-channel lagoons and still backwaters, to seasonally isolated floodplain lagoon and temporary pool biotopes on the left-bank of the Okavango River at Seronga.

Wide ranges in most determinants were evident along this profile:- temperature (27–34°C); conductivity(4–12.7mS m?1); pH(5.7–9.2); transparency(0.2–>2.5 m Secchi depth); dissolved oxygen (20–220% saturation); PO4-P (61–110 μg ??1): SiO2—Si (6.9–14.0 mg ??1): NH4-N (30–44 μg ??1): chlorophyll (1.3–183 μ.g ??1). Zooplankton was variably diverse (species richness from ≥ 3 to 20), comprising both euplanktonic (Bosmina, Ceriodaphnia, Daphnia, Diaphanosoma, Moina, Mesocyclops, Thermocyclops, Tropodiaptomus) and more typical epiphytic crustacean taxa (Alona, Macrothrix, Pleuroxus), along with various rotifers (Brachionus, Hexarthra, Keratella, Trichocera) and other taxa (Arcella, Ostracoda. Chaoborus). Abundance varied widely between habitats. The littoral macrozoobenthos showed surprisingly low diversity, and was dominated by freshwater shrimps (Caridina).

Substantial allochthonous inputs to the Okavango swamps were evident from the significant concentrations of total suspended solids (7.6–12.6 mg ??1 , organic content of 33–41%) carried by the mainstream Okavango River during the survey.  相似文献

SUMMARY

The structure and summer biomass (g m?2 dry mass) of the principal aquatic macrophyte communities of the Wilderness Lakes were measured. Both emergent and submerged communities were included in the study. Productivity estimates were made by multiplying biomass by production/biomass ratios for each species. Salinity gradients in the system are described and details of the different sediment types associated with the macrophytes are given. There was considerable variation in production rates between the different water bodies often coinciding with a salinity gradient. However, rapid, natural changes in the communities are described which also influence production rates in a given water body. Production rates (g dry mass m?2 a?1) were of the order: Typha latifolia > Phragmites australis > Scirpus littoralis > Potamogeton pectinatus > Chara qlobularis > Ruppia cirrhosa. The significance of the macrophyte rates is discussed in relation to Wilderness Lakes area as a whole.  相似文献

A series of substituted 2,4,5-triphenylisothiazol-3(2H)-one 1,1-dioxides 9 was synthesized and investigated as inhibitors of human leukocyte elastase (HLE). All compounds were found to inhibit HLE in a time-dependent manner and most of them exhibited kobs/[I] values > 300 M? 1s? 1. The most potent 3-oxosultam of this series was 9l (kobs/[I] = 2440 M? 1s? 1). Kinetic investigations performed with 9g and different substrate concentrations did not allow to clearly distinguish between a competitive or noncompetitive mode of inhibition. A more complex interaction is supported by the failure of a linear dependency of kobs values on the inhibitor concentration.  相似文献

Cultures of Rhizosolenia formosa H. Peragallo were studied to assess whether or not physiological and optical characteristics of this large diatom were consistent with the ability to migrate vertically in the open ocean. Time-course experiments examined changes in chemical composition and buoyancy of R. formosa during nitrate (N)–replete growth, N starvation, and recovery. Cells could maintain unbalanced growth for at least 53 h after depletion of ambient nitrate. Increases in C:N and carbohydrate: protein ratios observed during N starvation reversed within 24 h of reintroduction of nitrate to culture medium. Buoyancy was related to nutrition: Upon N depletion, the percentage of positively buoyant cells decreased to 4% from 11% but reverted to 9% within 12 h of nitrate readdition. Cells took up nitrate in the dark. Nitrogen-specific uptake rates averaged 0.48 d?1; these rates were higher than N-specific growth rates (0. 15 d?1), indicating the potential for luxury consumption of nitrate, which can be stored for later use. Measurements of photosynthesis vs. irradiance, chlorophyll-specific absorption (aph*(λ)), and pigment composition showed that cells may be adapted for growth under a wide range of irradiances. Values of aph*(λ) were lower for N-depleted cells than for N-replete cells, and N-depleted cells had higher ratios of total carotenoids to chlorophyll a. Aggregation of chloroplasts was more pronounced in N-depleted cells. These are possibly photoprotective mechanisms that would be an advantage to N-depleted cells in surface waters. Compounds that absorb in the ultraviolet region were detected in N-replete cells but were absent in N-depleted cultures. Overall, these results have important implications for migrations of Rhizosolenia in nature. Cells may survive fairly long periods in N-depleted surface waters and will continue to take up carbon; then they can resume nitrate uptake and revert to positive buoyancy upon returning to deep, N-rich water. Uncoupled uptake of carbon and nitrogen during migrations of Rhizosolenia is a form of new production that may result in the net removal of carbon from oceanic surface waters.  相似文献

Knowledge on microbial community composition and ecology in highly mineralized (TDS up to 71?g l?1), cold waters (T?<?12?°C) from the zones of restricted water exchange is scarce. Therefore, the aim of our study was to reveal how the particular physicochemical water conditions of these zones affect the community composition. The community members, which could be involved in the sulfur cycling were of particular interest since they may strongly influence wells operation. The pristine, mineral waters of North Poland were extracted from boreholes reaching Cenozoic, Jurassic, and Triassic aquifers at the depth of 46–1248?m below ground surface. Both culture-dependent (culturing on R2A medium) and culture-independent techniques (microscopic methods and high-throughput 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing) were applied. The bacterial communities were characterized by low complexity and strongly varied across the sampling locations. Bacteria potentially involved in the sulfur cycle (sulfate reduction) were common in all mineral waters and were dominant (especially Desulfovibrio) in the deepest waters. The most important geochemical drivers of the observed microbial community composition were TDS including Cl?, Na+, Mg2+, and NO3?. Bacterial isolates belonged mostly to the genus Bacillus. Sequences assigned to Archaea (Methanobacterium) were detected only in the deepest borehole water.  相似文献

A novel series of bioactive water soluble mixed ligand complexes (1–5) [MII(L)(phen)AcO]. nH2O {where M?=?Cu (1) n?=?2; Co (2), Mn (3), Ni (4), n?=?4 and Zn (5) n?=?2} were synthesized from 2-(2-Morpholinoethylimino) methyl)phenol Schiff base ligand (LH), 1, 10-phenanthroline and metal(II) acetate salt in a 1:1:1 stoichiometric ratio and characterized by several spectral techniques. The obtained analytical and spectral data suggest the octahedral geometry around the central metal ion. Density functional theory calculations have been further supportive to explore the optimized structure and chemical reactivity of these complexes from their frontier molecular orbitals. Gel electrophoresis result indicates that complex (1) manifested an excellent DNA cleavage property than others. The observed binding constants with free energy changes by electronic absorption technique and DNA binding affinity values by viscosity measurements for all compounds were found in the following order (1)?>?(2)?>?(4)?>?(5)?>?(3) > (LH). The binding results and thermodynamic parameters are described the intercalation mode. In vitro antioxidant properties disclose that complex (1) divulges high scavenging activity against DPPH?, ?OH, O2?? NO?, and Fe3+. The antimicrobial reports illustrate that the complexes (1–5) were exhibited well defined inhibitory effect than ligand (LH) against the selected different pathogenic species. The observed percentage growth inhibition against A549, HepG2, MCF-7, and NHDF cell lines suggest that complex (1) has exhibited superior anticancer potency than others. Thus, the complex (1) may contribute as potential anticancer agent due to its unique interaction mode with DNA.GRAPHICAL ABSTRACT

Abstract

The sequestering capacity of synthetic and naturally occurring polycarboxylate ligands towards mono-methylmercury(II) was evaluated by stability quantitative data on the interaction of CH3Hg+ with different molecular weight synthetic polyacrylates (2 and 20kDa average M.wt) and alginate (70–100 kDa) extracted from brown algae Macrocystis pyrifera. The influence of ionic medium was evaluated by measurements on the CH3Hg+-polyacrylate systems in NaNO3 medium at different ionic strengths (0.10, 0.25, 0.50 and 0.75 mol L?1), and a Debye-HiJckel type equation was used for the dependence of complex formation constants on ionic strength. Measurements on the CH3Hg+ - alginate system were carried out at l = 0.10 mol L?1 in NaNO3 medium. By using the stability data, the sequestering capacity of both ligands towards monomethylmercury(II) was determined at different pH values. Results obtained show that the binding ability of polyacrylic ligands (PAA) is stronger than the alginate (AA), following the trend PAA (20 kDa)> PAA (2kDa)>AA.  相似文献

Phytoplankton pigment distributions during the spring isothermal periods of 1998 and 1999 and their association with episodic sediment resuspension were characterized in coastal waters of southern Lake Michigan. Total and phylogenetic group chl a concentrations (derived using chemical taxonomy matrix factorization of diagnostic carotenoids) corresponded with assemblage and group biovolumes estimated from microscopic enumeration (P≤ 0.001). Diatoms and cryptophytes dominated assemblages and together typically comprised greater than 85% of relative chl a. Total chl a concentrations and both fucoxanthin·chl a ? 1 and alloxanthin·chl a ? 1 ratios were similar across depths (P> 0.05), indicating uniform distributions of and photophysiological states for assemblages and diatoms and cryptophytes, respectively, throughout the mixed water column. Total chl a concentrations were not always spatially uniform from near‐shore to offshore waters, with the greatest variability reflecting the influence of tributary inflows upon coastal assemblages. Sediment resuspension strongly influenced water column particle density and light climate; however, total and group chl a concentrations did not correspond with coefficients of Kd and suspended particulate matter concentrations (P> 0.05). The correspondence of both light attenuation and suspended particulate matter concentration with relative diatom chl a (P≤ 0.001) indicated an apparent association between sediment resuspension and diatoms. This, and the negative association (P≤ 0.0001) between relative diatom and cryptophyte chl a, corresponded with the spatial dominance of diatom and cryptophyte chl a in near‐shore and offshore waters, respectively. The presence of viable chl a and fucoxanthin within the surficial sediment layer, established this layer as a potential source of meroplanktonic diatoms for near‐shore assemblages.  相似文献

The combined effects of light intensity and nitrogen (NO3?) on growth rate, pigment content, and biochemical composition of Gracilaria foliifera v. angustissima (Harvey) Taylor was investigated using outdoor continuous cultures. Growth of Gracilaria increased linearly with increasing light to 0.43 doublings d?1 at high light levels (383 ly d?1 of in situ light), suggesting that light may often limit growth of this plant in nature. Chlorophyll a and phycoerythrin contents were inversely proportional to light level and growth rate. However, pigment content did not affect the growth capacity of Gracilaria. There was no increase in growth or pigment content with increasing additions of nitrogen. The low nitrogen treatment was unenriched seawater that had higher NO3? levels than most coastal waters (influent = 8.61 μM; residual = 0.94 μM). When growing near its maximum rate under high light intensities, Gracilaria had a significantly (P < 0.001) lower phycoerythrin: chlorophyll a ratio (phyco: Chl a) than did Gracilaria growing more slowly under lower light (Phyco:Chl a of 2.8 ± 0.2 vs. 3.8 ± 0.3). Faster growing plants also had C:N ratios above 10, indicating N- limitation. In addition to harvesting light the phycobiliproteins of Gracilaria may store nitrogen. Growth rates of Gracilaria correlated negatively with ash (r =–0.85) and positively with the carbon: phycoerythrin ratio (r = 0.85), suggesting that these two indices can be used to estimate growth in the field.  相似文献

Soil solution chemistry reflects the most dynamic processes occurring in soils and is responsible for their current status. This study was undertaken to determine the soil solution status in 25 mountainous soils. The major cations in the studied soil solutions are in the decreasing order of Ca2+ > Mg2+ > Na+ > K+. The anions are also arranged in decreasing order as HCO? 3 > Cl? > NO? 3 > SO 2? 4 . Concentrations of NO? 3 , P, and K+ in soil solutions were in the range of 12–364 mg l?1, 1.75–34.8 mg l?1, and 0.78– 198 mg l?1, respectively. Results suggest that the concentration of P in the soil solutions could be primarily controlled by of the solubility of octacalcium phosphate and ß-tricalcium phosphate. In general, the greater the dissolved P concentration in the soil solution, the closer the solution was to equilibrium with respect to the more soluble Ca2+ phosphate minerals. Surface soil accumulations of P, NO? 3 , and K+ have occurred in these soils to such an extent that loss of these nutrients in surface runoff and the high risk for nutrient transfer into groundwater in concentrations exceeding the groundwater quality standard has become a priority management concern.  相似文献

Ethmodiscus rex (Rattray) Wiseman and Hendey cells from near surface net tows in the Southwest Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea were examined for chemical composition, internal nutrient pool concentrations, and oxygen evolution characteristics. Elemental ratios indicated nitrogen limitation with C:N:P ratios of 125:9:1 (atoms), and carbon: chlorophyll (chl) ratios of 129:1 (weight). However, internal nitrate pools (1.4–27.1 mM) suggested that cells were not N-limited. Intracellular NO3? accounted for up to 54% (range = 3–54%) of the total N quota in some samples. Photosynthetic parameters were consistent with a high-light-adapted population and suggested an instantaneous maximum chl-specific photosynthetic rate (PBmax) of 4.8–12.4 nmol O2·μg chl?1· h?1. Respiration rates varied ten-fold and were inversely related to PBmax Ethmodiscus chemical composition and buoyancy characteristics are similar to vertically migrating Rhizosolenia mats and the non-motile dinoflagellate Pyrocystis noctiluca Murray (Schuett). The presence of internal NO3? pools in Ethmodiscus suggests that this genus is also vertically migrating to exploit sub-surface nitrogen pools. Such behavior may be widespread in large, non-motile oceanic phytoplankton. Based on ascent rate data, chemical composition, and photosynthetic rates, we estimate that the entire division–migration cycle for Ethmodiscus requires at least 7–12 days.  相似文献

The kinetics of heavy metal ions inhibition of jack bean urease was studied by progress curve analysis in a reaction system without enzyme-inhibitor preincubation. The inhibition was found to be biphasic with an initial, small inhibitory phase changing over the time course of 5–10?min into a final linear steady state with a lower velocity. This time-dependent pattern was best described by mechanism B of slow-binding inhibition, involving the rapid formation of an EI complex that subsequently undergoes slow conversion to a more stable EI* complex. The kinetic parameters of the process, the inhibition constants Ki and Ki* and the forward k5 and reverse k6 rate constants for the conversion, were evaluated from the reaction progress curves by nonlinear regression treatment. Based on the values of the overall inhibition constant Ki*, the heavy metal ions were found to inhibit urease in the following decreasing order: Hg2+ >?Cu2+ >?Zn2+ >?Cd2+ >?Ni2+ >?Pb2+ >?Co2+ >?Fe3+ >?As3+. With the Ki* values as low as 1.9?nM for Hg2+ and 7.1?nM for Cu2+, 100–1000 times lower than those of the other ions, urease may be utilized as a bioindicator of the trace levels of these ions in environmental monitoring, bioprocess control or pharmaceutical analysis.  相似文献

Water residing within crustal fractures encountered during mining at depths greater than 500 meters in the Witwatersrand basin of South Africa represents a mixture of paleo-meteoric water and 2.0–2.3 Ga hydrothermal fluid. The hydrothermal fluid is highly saline, contains abiogenic CH 4 and hydrocarbon, occasionally N 2 , originally formed at 250–300°C and during cooling isotopically exchanged O and H with minerals and accrued H 2 , 4 He and other radiogenic gases. The paleo-meteoric water ranges in age from 10 Ka to > 1.5 Ma, is of low salinity, falls along the global meteoric water line (GMWL) and is CO 2 and atmospheric noble gas-rich. The hydrothermal fluid, which should be completely sterile, has probably been mixing with paleo-meteoric water for at least the past ~100 Myr, a process which inoculates previously sterile environments at depths > 2.0 to 2.5 km. Free energy flux calculations suggest that sulfate reduction is the dominant electron acceptor microbial process for the high salinity fracture water and that it is 10 7 times that normally required for cell maintenance in lab cultures. Flux calculations also indicate that the potential bioavailable chemical energy increases with salinity, but because the fluence of bioavailable C, N and P also increase with salinity, the environment remains energy-limited. The 4 He concentrations and theoretical calculations indicate that the H 2 that is sustaining the subsurface microbial communities (e.g. H 2 -utilizing SRB and methanogens) is produced by water radiolysis at a rate of ~1 nM yr ?1 . Microbial CH 4 mixes with abiogenic CH 4 to produce the observed isotopic signatures and indicates that the rate of methanogenesis diminishes with depth from 100 at < 1 kmbls, to < 0.01 nM yr ?1 at > 3 kmbls. Microbial Fe(III) reduction is limited due to the elevated pH. The δ13C of dissolved inorganic carbon is consistent with heterotrophy rather than autotrophy dominating the deeper, more saline environments. One potential source of the organic carbon may be microfilms present on the mineral surfaces.  相似文献

Chlamydomonas reinhardtii Dang, was grown in a chemostat culture under phosphate limitation. The steady state concentration of phosphate was below the detection limit (< 1 μg P/L) in all runs. The cellular content of phosphorus (Qp), polyphosphate (Qpp) and chlorophyll a increased with increasing dilution rate, and the growth rate of the alga was described by Qp as well as Qpp in the Droop model. The ratio Qpp/Qp and the activity of alkaline phosphatase were maximal at high and low growth rates, respectively. Palmelloids of Chlamydomonas were found at high dilution rates (D > 0.12 h?1) and became attached to the wall of the culture vessel. They differed from the vegetative stage in both chemical composition and growth rate. Their contents of phosphorus and chlorophyll a were low, as in the vegetative cells, which grew at a low growth rate, whereas the ration Qpp/Qp and the activity of alkaline phosphatase were comparable with those of fast growing vegetative cells. The growth rate of the palmelloids was 0.03 h?1 whereas maximum growth rate (μm) for the vegetative cells was 0.21 h?1.  相似文献

In this study, we investigated the phenolic composition of the crude extract (MeOH 80 %) of Alnus cordata (Loisel .) Duby stem bark (ACE) and its antioxidant and skin whitening properties. RP‐LC‐DAD analysis showed a high content of hydroxycinnamic acids (47.64 %), flavanones (26.74 %) and diarylheptanoids (17.69 %). Furthermore, ACE exhibited a dose‐dependent antioxidant and free‐radical scavenging activity, expressed as half‐maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50): Oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC, IC50 1.78 μg mL?1)>Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC, IC50 3.47 μg mL?1)>2,2‐Diphenyl‐1‐picrylhydrazyl (DPPH, IC50 5.83 μg mL?1)>β‐carotene bleaching (IC50 11.58 μg mL?1)>Ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP, IC50 17.28 μg mL?1). Moreover, ACE was able to inhibit in vitro tyrosinase activity (IC50 77.44 μg mL?1), l ‐DOPA auto‐oxidation (IC50 39.58 μg mL?1) and in an in vivo model it exhibited bleaching effects on the pigmentation of zebrafish embryos (72 h post fertilization) without affecting their development and survival. In conclusion, results show that A. cordata stem bark may be considered a potential source of agents for the treatment of skin disorders due to its bleaching properties and favorable safety profiles, associated to a good antioxidant power.  相似文献

Reductive adsorption of Cr(VI) on coir pith (hereafter CP) was examined as a function of pH, ionic strength, and temperature. The CP contains 1.33 meq g? 1 phenolic, 0.43 meq g? 1 of lactonic, and 0.35 meq g? 1 carboxylic sites. Thus the CP surface is enriched with electron-donating oxygen functionalities. As evidenced by infrared (IR) spectroscopy, the Cr(VI) → Cr(III) conversion is facilitated by CP sites that are enriched with O─ O functional groups. The adsorption of reduced Cr(VI) was found to occur via C─ O─ functional groups first forming innersphere complexes with the CP surface, yielding keto (> C═ O) groups on the CP surface. The reductive adsorption of Cr(VI) was almost completed within 3 to 4 h, and it was dependent on pH and background ionic strength, yielding the highest monolayer coverage (9.56E-7 mol m? 2) at pH 3.7 in 0.1 M NaNO3. The ΓCr(III) followed the order with respect to the ionic strength: Γ0.1 M > Γ0.01 M > Γ0.001 M. The initial rate constant, k i , increased with temperature as k i 313 K > k i 303 K > k i 293 K > k i 283 K.  相似文献

The effect of light intensity (PAR) on the nitrogenase activity of Mastigocladus laminosus Cohn was studied by the acetylene reduction technique. Benthic mat from a thermal stream, Hot River, in Yellowstone National Park was used in both experimental and in situ incubations. This hot spring maintained a mean pH of 7.0, was essentially isothermal (ca. 50°C), and had virtually no upstream to downstream physicochemical gradients (P > 0.05). Two surveys of the stream showed that nitrogenase of the M. laminosus mat was significantly more active (P > 0.02) under low light intensities than under high intensities, 252 and 712 μE · m?2· s?1, respectively. Maximum activity of Hot River Mastigocladus (268 nmol C2H4· mg Chl a?1· h?1) occurred at 50% full midday light intensities; the rates at low light (mean = 247 nmol C2H4· mg Chl a?1· h?1) were significantly (P > 0.001) greater than those at high light (mean = 106). The results indicate that M. laminosus nitrogenase activity is low light adapted and suggest that the temporal pattern for nitrogen fixation might be significantly different from that of thermophilic Calothrix.  相似文献
