The growing threat of global climate change has led to a profusion of studies examining the effects of warming on biota. Despite the potential importance of natural variability such as diurnal temperature fluctuations, most experimental studies on warming are conducted under stable temperatures. Here, we investigated whether the responses of an aquatic invertebrate grazer (Lymnaea stagnalis) to an increased average temperature differ when the thermal regime is either constant or fluctuates diurnally. Using thermal response curves for several life‐history and immune defense traits, we first identified the optimum and near‐critically high temperatures that Lymnaea potentially experience during summer heat waves. We then exposed individuals that originated from three different populations to these two temperatures under constant or fluctuating thermal conditions. After 7 days, we assessed growth, reproduction, and two immune parameters (phenoloxidase‐like activity and antibacterial activity of hemolymph) from each individual. Exposure to the near‐critically high temperature led to increased growth rates and decreased antibacterial activity of hemolymph compared to the optimum temperature, whilst temperature fluctuations had no effect on these traits. The results indicate that the temperature level per se, rather than the variability in temperature was the main driver altering trait responses in our study species. Forecasting responses in temperature‐related responses remains challenging, due to system‐specific properties that can include intraspecific variation. However, our study indicates that experiments examining the effects of warming using constant temperatures can give similar predictions as studies with fluctuating thermal dynamics, and may thus be useful indicators of responses in nature.  相似文献

1. Leptodora is a key species in many temperate freshwater systems, but so far its role in the food web could not be properly evaluated because detailed information about its secondary production was lacking. As we wanted to estimate the secondary production of Leptodora, we measured its development and growth rates in the laboratory. 2. Employing improved methods to estimate growth and instar durations, we cultured Leptodora kindtii in the laboratory at four constant temperatures (15, 17.5, 20 and 25 °C). Growth in length and development times of eggs and instar stages were assessed. 3. Growth rates at 15, 17.5 and 20 °C were similar, but at 25 °C growth was distinctly faster. At 17.5 °C we observed seven juvenile instar stages before the first adult instar stage was reached.  相似文献

The endemic South African velvet worm genus Peripatopsis currently contains eight recognized species described from variable morphological characters and the current taxonomy is unsatisfactory. In an attempt to investigate evolutionary relationships within Peripatopsis, we collected 137 individuals from 34 sample localities for six of the eight species. Sequence data derived from two partial mitochondrial (mt)DNA gene loci (COI and 12S rRNA), as well as partial sequence data from the ribosomal nuclear 18S rDNA locus in combination with gross morphological characters and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), was used to examine evolutionary relationships. Phylogenetic relationships were investigated using minimum evolution (ME) and Bayesian inferences (BI). Additionally, we also undertook a maximum likelihood (ML) analyses on the combined DNA sequence data set. The combined DNA evidence topologies derived from the ME, BI, and ML was highly congruent and was characterized by the presence of multiple lineages within recognized taxa. Peripatopsis clavigera, Peripatopsis moseleyi, and Peripatopsis sedgwicki each comprised two evolutionary lineages; Peripatopsis capensis comprised three; and Peripatopsis balfouri comprised six operational taxonomic units respectively. Genealogical exclusivity at both mtDNA and nuclear DNA among the geographically coherent groups coupled with pronounced sequence divergence suggested a two‐fold increase in the number of species within Peripatopsis. Previously used gross morphological characters (such as the number of leg pairs and colour) were either highly variable within operational taxonomic units, or were invariant, suggesting that alternative morphological characters are necessary for species discrimination. SEM results revealed potentially useful diagnostic characters that can discriminate between at least discriminate some of the newly‐identified lineages. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society 2009, 97 , 200–216.  相似文献

Abstract 1. We monitored three different‐sized wood ant (Formica aquilonia Yarrow) mounds over a 3‐year period in Finnish boreal forests dominated by Norway spruce (Picea abies Karst.), to assess the seasonal temperature dependency of ant activity. Additionally, we also monitored Norway spruce trees around the mounds for descending honeydew foragers. 2. The amount of collected honeydew and prey and its composition, as well as the carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) in honeydew and invertebrate prey was also investigated. 3. The number of warm days (average temperature above 20 °C) and the amount of precipitation differed among the years. Ant activity at the mounds (but not on the trees) was highly correlated with air temperature throughout the ant‐active season (May–September), but ant activity in spring and autumn was lower than in summer at similar temperatures. During all 3 years, honeydew played a major role in wood ant nutrition (78–92% of dry mass). Invertebrate prey was mainly Diptera (on average 26.2%), Coleoptera (12.5%), Aphidina (9.3%), and Arachnoida (8.5%). 4. The total amounts of C, N, and P input brought into the ant mounds in the form of food (both honeydew and prey) on the stand level were 12.6–39.0, 1.6–4.6 and 0.1–0.4 kg ha?1 year?1, respectively, which is equivalent to 2–6%, 12–33% and 27–58% of the fluxes in annual needle litterfall in typical boreal Norway spruce forests. Thus, wood ants can play a significant role in short term and local N and P cycling of boreal forest ecosystems.  相似文献

The linear growth rates of Gaeumannomyces graminis var. graminis, G. graminis var. tritici, Phialophora radicicola var. graminicola and a lobed hyphopodiate Phialophora sp. were studied on agar at various temperatures between 5 and 30 °C and on wheat roots at two temperature regimes (12 h at 7°/12 h at 13 °C and 12 h at 17°/12 h at 23 °C). On agar at 30 °C, the isolates of G. graminis graminis grew faster than those of G. graminis tritici and Phialophora sp. but three isolates of G. g. graminis grew more slowly than the other two fungi at 5 and 10 °C. Two other isolates of G. g. graminis were cold-tolerant and had growth rates comparable to those of G. g. tritici and Phialophora sp. at 10 °C. The growth rates of Australian isolates of P. radicicola graminicolu were similar to that of a British isolate and were about a third to a half those of the other three fungi at most temperatures. The growth rates of the fungi on wheat roots at the low and high temperature regimes were correlated with the growth rates on agar at 10 and 20 °C respectively. The correlation was better at low temperatures r= 0.81) than at high temperatures (r = 0.62). Cross-protection experiments using two G. g. graminis isolates which grow poorly at temperatures below 15 °C and a cold-tolerant isolate each of G. g. graminis and Phialophora sp. showed that, while all four fungi protected wheat against take-all at high temperatures (17/23 °C) as evidenced by less severe disease and significantly greater dry weights, only the cold-tolerant fungi were effective at low temperatures (7/13 °C). The use of cold-tolerant isolates of avirulent fungi in field experiments may result in better protection in the early stages of wheat growth when Australian soil temperatures are mostly below 15 °C.  相似文献

1. To characterise geographic and small scale variation in the structure of macroinvertebrate communities in stream leaf packs, we collected one to three natural leaf pack communities from 119 reference streams in the Fraser River Basin and quantified their variability and correlation with aspects of the stream environment at several scales. We also sampled leaf packs in 19 test streams in the same geographic area exposed to stressors (nine logged, seven farmed, three mined catchments) to evaluate the leaf pack community as a tool for bioassessment. 2. There was substantial variation in the composition of invertebrate communities in leaf packs among reference streams of the Fraser River Basin. Capnia and Zapada (stoneflies), Baetis and Ephemerella (mayflies) and Tvetnia (midge) were the most common taxa found in the leaf packs. There were three types of assemblages identified by non‐metric multidimensional scaling; Capnia, Baetis and Ephemerella communities. 3. Leaf pack communities from the 19 test streams were plotted on a non‐metric multidimensional scaling ordination of the reference communities, and 14 of 19 sites fell outside the 80% confidence ellipse of the reference sites, including eight of nine logged, four of seven farmed and one of three mined catchments. Most of these streams plotted on the ordination near the Ephemerella reference communities. Reference stream communities had a similar number of genera per leaf pack (12.0) and genera per site (18.7) as the test streams (12.6 genera per leaf pack and 18.7 genera per site). Among the test sites, the farmed catchments had higher genera per leaf pack (17.8) and genera per site (21.9) than either the logged (11.5 genera per leaf pack; 19.9 genera per site) or mined (3.4 genera per leaf pack; 7.7 genera per site) catchments. 4. Heterogeneity of leaf pack communities within a site decreased as the number of genera found at the site increased. This was determined by allometric regression of the number of genera found at a site on the maximum number of genera possible, given the average number found per leaf pack. 5. There was a significant relationship between the composition of the leaf pack invertebrate community and stream geography (latitude, longitude, altitude, stream order). Canonical correspondence analysis showed differences among ‘big river’, ‘mountain stream’ and ‘southern’ communities. 6. There was no relationship between the composition of the leaf pack invertebrate community and stream channel and flow characteristics (bank dimensions, flow, slope). There was a significant relationship between the composition of the leaf pack invertebrate community and water quality of the stream (oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus, conductivity, pH, temperature). ‘Cold, oxygen rich water’ communities were distinguishable from communities in streams with warmer, lower oxygen concentration. ‘High nutrient water’ communities were also distinct from communities in low nutrient streams. There was no relationship between the composition of the leaf pack invertebrate community and the nature of the leaf pack itself (i.e. morphology, decomposition, coniferous needle content). 7. Invertebrate communities in leaf packs show substantial, interpretable variation among reference streams. They are sensitive to human stressors at a landscape scale such as forestry and agriculture. Their diversity and composition varies at different spatial scales in a way that is at least partially explained by the environment of the stream and its catchment area.  相似文献

Simultaneous collections of drift and organisms moving either upstream or downstream in association with the substrate were made using a specially designed sampler. Samples were taken in a diel series along a transect across the study riffle of a Colorado foothills stream on six dates over an annual cycle. In addition to longitudinal movements, taxonomic composition and diel periodicity were evaluated. The insect-dominated fauna showed a net downstream displacement. Only the caddisflies Helicopsyche borealis and Hesperophylax occidentalis exhibited net upstream movement, primarily a result of low drift frequencies. The taxonomic composition of moving invertebrates differed from that of the benthos. Drift resembled downstream moving substrate-associated invertebrates in composition, but differed from that of the upstream directed fauna. Taxa collectively exhibited four types of diel patterns: 1) similar downstream (drift and substrate-associated movements) patterns, which generally differed from the upstream pattern; 2) similar benthic (upstream and downstream) patterns, which differed from that of drift; 3) aperiodic patterns; and 4) independent patterns for each type of directional movement. Analysis of size classes based on head capsule width for the mayfly Baetis tricaudatus showed significantly smaller size in stationary individuals compared with moving individuals in the population and revealed that nymphs moving during the day were smaller than those moving at night.  相似文献

State III respiration rates were measured in mitochondria isolated from hearts of Antarctic notothenioid fishes that differ in the expression of hemoglobin (Hb) and myoglobin (Mb). Respiration rates were measured at temperatures between 2 and 40°C in Gobionotothen gibberifrons (+Hb/+Mb), Chaenocephalus aceratus (–Hb/–Mb) and Chionodraco rastrospinosus (–Hb/+Mb). Blood osmolarity was measured in all three species and physiological buffers prepared for isolating mitochondria and measuring respiration rates. Respiration rates were higher in mitochondria from G. gibberifrons compared to those from C. aceratus at 2°C, but were similar among all species at temperatures between 10 and 26°C. Respiration rates were significantly lower in icefishes at 35 and 40°C compared to G. gibberifrons. The respiratory control ratio of isolated mitochondria was lower in C. aceratus compared to G. gibberifrons at all temperatures below 35°C. At 35 and 40°C, mitochondria were uncoupled in all species. The Arrhenius break temperature of state III respiration was similar among all three species (30.5 ± 0.9°C) and higher than values previously reported for Antarctic notothenioids, likely due to the higher osmolarity of buffers used in this study. These results suggest that differences in mitochondrial structure, correlated with the expression of oxygen-binding proteins, minimally impact mitochondrial function.  相似文献

1. The objective was to determine the time spent in the drift by different taxa of stream invertebrates. Most data were obtained from an earlier experimental study to determine the distances travelled by drifting invertebrates of 16 taxa in Wilfin Beck. Experiments were performed at two sites: ‘site 4’ in a stony, fast‐flowing, section of stream, ‘site 3’ in a deeper stream section where macrophytes were abundant. 2. The significant relationship between the mean distance x (m) travelled in the drift and modal water velocity V (m s?1) was described by a power function in the earlier study but, as the power was close to one, a linear relationship has now been found to provide a satisfactory model. The rate of increase in x (m) with increasing V varied considerably between taxa. The mean time [mean t (s)] spent in the drift was estimated by dividing each x (m) by the appropriate V. Mean t (s) for each taxon was usually very constant over a wide range of V at each site (0.10–0.60 m s?1 at site 4, 0.15–0.53 m s?1 at site 3). A simple model estimated the time spent in the drift by different percentages (e.g. 75, 50, 10 and 1%) of the drifting invertebrates. 3. The experimental taxa at site 4 were divided into three groups according to the mean time spent in the drift. Mean t (s) for the five taxa in group 1 (32.8 s) was not significantly different from that obtained in control experiments with a mixed group of dead invertebrates. A similar time (33.0 s) was obtained for the five taxa in group 2, except at water velocities less than 0.2 m s?1 when the mean t (s) decreased to 15–21 s. Mean t (s) was constant for each of the six taxa in group 3, and significantly less than that for groups 1 and 2. Mean values ranged from 28.8 s for Ephemerella ignita to only 9.4 s for Baetis rhodani and Gammarus pulex. All mean values were lower at site 3, presumably because of the dense stands of macrophytes, with mean values of 12.9 s for the five taxa in group 1 (equalling the value for dead invertebrates). Mean values for the six remaining taxa varied from 6.4 s for Simulium spp. to only 4.9 s for Baetis rhodani and 4.8 s for Gammarus pulex. It was concluded from a discussion of this study that the time spent in the drift may provide a useful measure for comparing the downstream dispersal of invertebrates in different streams, and may be a useful addition to models for the drift feeding of salmonids.  相似文献

Inbreeding is a potent evolutionary force shaping the distribution of genetic variation within and among populations of plants and animals. Yet, our understanding of the forces shaping the expression and evolution of nonrandom mating in general, and inbreeding in particular, remains remarkably incomplete. Most research on plant mating systems focuses on self-fertilization and its consequences for automatic selection, inbreeding depression, purging, and reproductive assurance, whereas studies of animal mating systems have often assumed that inbreeding is rare, and that natural selection favors traits that promote outbreeding. Given that many sessile and sedentary marine invertebrates and marine macroalgae share key life history features with seed plants (e.g., low mobility, modular construction, and the release of gametes into the environment), their mating systems may be similar. Here, we show that published estimates of inbreeding coefficients (FIS) for sessile and sedentary marine organisms are similar and at least as high as noted in terrestrial seed plants. We also found that variation in FIS within invertebrates is related to the potential to self-fertilize, disperse, and choose mates. The similarity of FIS for these organismal groups suggests that inbreeding could play a larger role in the evolution of sessile and sedentary marine organisms than is currently recognized. Specifically, associations between traits of marine invertebrates and FIS suggest that inbreeding could drive evolutionary transitions between hermaphroditism and separate sexes, direct development and multiphasic life cycles, and external and internal fertilization.  相似文献

The duration times of eggs, combined naupliar instars and of the different copepodite stages of five species of cyclopoid copepods — Acanthocyclops robustus, Cyclops vicinus, Diacyclops bicuspidatus, Mesocyclops leuckarti, and Thermocyclops crassus — were investigated at five different temperatures. The five species can be divided in two groups: two species, C. vicinus and D. bicuspidatus, adapted to cold water conditions and three species, A. robustus, M. leuckarti and T. crassus adapted to warm water conditions. The cold water species showed a faster egg development than M. leuckarti and T. crassus at 5–15 °C. The eggs and instars of the warm water species M. leuckarti tend to develop faster than those of the former two species at higher temperatures. A. robustus showed the shortest egg and instar development at 10–25 °C. The warm water species T. crassus produced no eggs at 10 °C and temperatures below. At higher temperatures (20, 25 °C) the egg and instar duration times were similar or longer than those of the other species. When cultured in total darkness a great part of the CIV respectively CV copepodites of the summer forms entered arrest and the percentage of copepodites that showed an arrest of development was highest at lowest temperatures. The present results are compared with data from literature and differences are discussed.  相似文献

Kaliszewicz, A. and Lipińska, A. 2011. Environmental condition related reproductive strategies and sex ratio in hydras. —Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 00 :1–7. Temperature and food supply appeared to affect sex ratio, sex composition and percentage of sexual individuals in three Hydra species: Hydra vulgaris, Hydra circumcincta and Hydra viridissima. We found three sexes present: females, males and hermaphrodites depending on environmental conditions. Hydra vulgaris appeared to be a species with a temperature‐dependent sex determination (TSD). The males and hermaphrodites were present only under rising temperatures, whereas females were observed exclusively at lowering temperatures. Hydras reproduced asexually at constant room temperature. Unlimited food affected sex ratios and induced the presence of males in H. circumcincta at lowering temperatures. Thus, H. circumcincta may be recognised as another Hydra species in which sex is determined by environmental factors (ESD). Under rising temperatures, the number of hermaphroditic individuals was higher when food supply was unlimited in all three species, indicating that hermaphrodites may need more energy to produce both male and female gonads. Both temperature changes and food supply positively affected asexual reproductive strategies in hydras, especially budding rates. Hydra circumcincta appeared to be less agile than other hydras and able to self‐fertilise. It is likely that self‐fertilisation is an adaptation to the low probability of meeting a mate belonging to the other clone.  相似文献

Food web analyses have been fundamental in understanding community organization and ecosystem functioning. To date, a number of studies demonstrate that stream food webs depend to a large extent on allochthonous detritus, but there are more recent studies that show a high degree of autochthony. Our food‐web study was carried out in three Andean rivers (Coilaco, Guampoe and Trancura) within the catchment area of Toltén River in southern Chile. Based on the analyses of 4251 invertebrate gut contents, we found that these Andean stream food webs are dominated by herbivores (range: 50–73% of all species) supported by a species‐rich algal (basal) component, and characterized by a low proportion of omnivores (range: 8–27% of all species) and predatory species (range: 10–24%). Significant differences in the number of feeding links of the herbivores Meridialis diguillina and Antarctoperla michaelseni and the omnivore Smicridea chilensis were found between seasons. The spring herbivore Aubertoperla sp. showed significant differences between rivers. S. chilensis fed on 50 different prey items as compared with the herbivores whose maximum number of links ranged between 37 and 40. Web sizes ranged between 93 and 131 species and the proportion of top species was distinctly lower than those of basal (up to 0.651 in Coilaco River) and intermediate species. Direct connectance (links per species2) values were low and similar among rivers (range: 0.051–0.074), whereas mean food chain length ranged between 2.23 and 2.90. The distributions of web property values from the Andean rivers differed from those previously published. In contrast to previous predictions, mean food chain length in these Andean streams displayed a scale‐invariant pattern across different web sizes, but it was significantly related to the proportion of intermediate species.  相似文献

The relationship between head pteridine fluorescence (HPF) levels and age in adult females and males of a common necrophagous fly, Chrysomya megacephala, and effects of temperature and fly sex on the relationship were studied by pteridine fluorescence spectrophotometry. Factors affecting HPF levels in flies were found to include fly age, temperature and fly sex, among which the fly age was the most dominant one. There were significant linear relationships between HPF levels and age both for female and male adult flies at five constant temperatures, i. e. 16°C, 20°C, 24°C, 28°C and 32°C. The relationship between mean rate of pteridine accumulation (FV or MV) and temperature (t) could be well described by a modified exponential equation of FV=0.01288 e(0.2241t‐3.127)+0.3649 (r2= 0.9987) for females and a linear regression equation of MV= 0.0574 t ‐ 0.3637 (r2= 0.9557) for males. Using the information from the experiments at five constant temperatures, three calculated methods as the candidates were developed for accurately determining the age of the fly by HPF levels at ambient temperature. The results revealed that these three methods were suitable for estimating the age only for male flies, but not for female flies. The smallest average error of the predicated age was 2.55 days for males. In addition, how to employ which of these three developed methods for determining ages of male flies in practical was also discussed.  相似文献

Ecdysteroids were detected in the phylum Nemertea and their physiological role was studied. Radioimmunoassay (RIA) measurements showed ecdysteroid concentrations ranging from 1–47 pg/mg wet weight in several nemertean species from the orders Palaeonemertea, Heteronemertea, and Hoplonemertea. High-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) analysis of Paranemertes peregrina displayed peaks of RIA activity with retention times similar to those of authentic ecdysone and 20-hydroxyecdysone standards. Fluctuating ecdysteroid titers were observed in the various life stages of Carcinonemertes errans with the highest concentrations (47 pg/mg wet weight) found in gravid females. RIA of HPLC fractions of Carcinonemertes errans eggs indicated the presence of ecdysteroids (105 pg/mg wet weight). Alterations in the growth of juvenile, male, or female C. errans were not observed when the worms were exposed to 10–7. 10–6, or 10–5 M 20-hydroxyecdysone. However, the eggs of C. errans appeared to be stimulated by 20-hydroxyecdysone. Shorter hatching times were observed in the egg strings exposed to hormone (10–7 to 10–5 M) compared to sea water and cholesterol (10–11 and 10–9 M) controls. Possible physiological roles and the evolutionary significance of ecdysteroids in nemerteans are discussed.  相似文献

Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat.) is one of the most popular ornamental flowers in the world, and many agronomic traits have recently been introduced to chrysanthemum cultivars by gene transformation. Concerns have been raised, however, regarding transgene flow from transgenic plants to wild plants. In early studies, ethylene receptor genes have been used for genetic modification in plants, such as flower longevity and fruit ripening. Recently, overexpression of ethylene receptor genes from melon (CmETR1/H69A) caused delayed tapetum degradation of the anther sac and a reduction in pollen grains. We therefore introduced the ethylene receptor gene into chrysanthemums to induce male sterility and prevent transgene flow via pollen. The chrysanthemum cultivar Yamate shiro was transformed using a disarmed strain of Agrobacterium tumefaciens, EHA105, carrying the binary vector pBIK102H69A, which contains the CmETR1/H69A gene. A total of 335 shoots were regenerated from 1,282 leaf discs on regeneration medium (26.1%). The presence of the Cm-ETR1/H69A gene was confirmed in all of the regenerated plantlets by Southern blot analysis. These genetically modified (GM) plants and their non-GM counterparts were grown in a closed greenhouse and flowered at temperatures between 10 and 35°C. In 15 of the 335 GM chrysanthemum lines, the number of mature pollen grains was significantly reduced, particularly in three of the lines (Nos. 91, 191 and 324). In these three lines, pollen grains were not observed at temperatures between 20 and 35°C but were observed at 10 and 15°C, and mature pollen grains were formed only at 15°C. In northern blot analyses, expression of the CmETR1/H69A gene was suppressed at low temperatures. This phenomenon was observed as a result of both the suppression of CmETR1/H69A expression at low temperatures and the optimal growth temperature of chrysanthemums (15–20°C). Furthermore, the female fertility of these three GM lines was significantly lower than that of the non-GM plants. Thus, the mutated ethylene receptor is able to reduce both male and female fertility significantly in transgenic chrysanthemums, although the stability of male and/or female sterility at varying growth temperatures is a matter of concern for its practical use.  相似文献

Summary The Sphenomorphus quoyi species complex (Lacertilia: Scincidae) of southeast Australia consists of three lizard species, distributed as continuous but largely allopatric populations, and a fourth species which has a disjunct distribution at high altitudes within the range of the other three. The four species have similar Voluntary temperatures (range of body temperatures within which normal activity occurs) despite the fact that they occupy different geographical areas.Altitudinal zonation is shown in the distribution pattern of the four species with S. quoyi and S. tympanum (warm temperate) restricted to the lower altitudes. The level of the mean daily minimum and maximum temperatures are different in each of the four species distribution areas. Similarly, the area occupied by each species is characterized by different daily sunlit and shade surface temperatures and different duration of ground surface subzero temperatures. Floristic composition of the four areas and the basking sites utilized by each species are also dissimilar. The lower temperature tolerances and the acclimation range of the Critical Minimum temperatures of S. quoyi and S. tympanum (warm temperate) exclude these species from the higher altitudes with the relatively lower environmental temperature levels. The Critical temperatures of the species which are found at high altitudes, do not explain why sympatry is not found with the lowland species.  相似文献
