A comparative study of pads and folds in the foot is made on 56 passerine species, classified in 18 families or subfamilies of the suborder Oscines. A basic pattern of thirteen pads is recognized: twelve in the digits, each related to one phalanx; the thirteenth in the central part of the foot, ventral to the trochleas of tarsometatarsus. Certain pads in the anterior digits are divided in species with long and narrow pads. The number of folds varies, even in the same species, but a basic pattern is recognized. There is one fold at each joint. Except for the fold at the distal joint in the four digits, these folds are comparable with pads in certain non-Passerifor-mes. The folds at the proximal phalanx of the third and the fourth digit are interpreted as reduced pads. Some folds are separated parts of phalanx pads. – Most passerine birds have this basic pattern of pads and folds, clearly adapted to a life on branches or on twigs. Certain species, exemplified by Alauda arvensis, Plectrophenax nicalis, Certhia familiaris , and Regulus regulus , have different morphology of pads and folds, depending on a reduced number of papillae, and being adaptations to life on the ground, on tree trunks, or on very thin twigs. Relatively few papillae occur in certain species that winter in temperate or cold climates. This means a reduced area of contact with the substrate and is probably important in heat regulation by reducing the conductive heat flow through the papillae to the substrate.–The pads and folds have a restricted value for the classification on family or subfamily level.  相似文献

Preparations of dermal collagenous fibres and slices of human dermis have been equilibrated with 125I-labelled monomeric human serum albumin. The space inaccessible to the albumin in the fibres and in the dermis was determined by subtraction of the accessible space, calculated from the radioactivity of the specimen, from its total fluid. For a fibre preparation examined in detail, the fluid exclusion was independent of the concentration of either albumin or collagen. Binding of albumin to the fibres was not demonstrable. Three fibre preparations excluded albumin from 3.75 +/- 0.96, 3.55 +/- 0.67, and 2.05 +/- 0.39 g of fluid/g of collagen (+/-S.D.). Slices from three specimens of dermis excluded albumin from 1.45 +/- 0.08 g of fluid/g of insoluble solids or 1.57 +/- 0.11 g of fluid/g of collagen (+/-S.D.). Thus the exclusion of albumin by dermis was much less than expected from its content of collagenous fibres. On the basis of these data and the published composition of dermis, the concentration of albumin in the accessible interstitial space was estimated to be close to that in the plasma.  相似文献

The staining and demonstration of neural elements in relation with other associated structures was most satisfactory at pH 5.2, incubation period 20 h, and temperature 40degreesC. Ganglia of various shape and size were observed on or near the fungiform, filiform and foliate papillae. In the region of the fungiform papillae, a chain of ganglia (parasympathetic) was observed. The nerve cells of these ganglia showed cholinesterase (ChE) activity. The neural networks of the foliate papillae were connected with the neural terminal network and occasionally to the ganglia. The innervation of blood vessels (artery and vein) was profuse. At times ganglia were noticed on the periphery of the artery. Neuromuscular spindle-like structures were noticed occasionally. Dot-like free nerve endings were also observed. The ChE activity was very marked in the muscle fibres lying in the region of the circumvallate papillae but was less marked in the muscle fibres lying in the region of the filiform and fungiform papillae.  相似文献

The data on structural interconnections between collagenous fibres in the human dermis and periosteum were obtained by means of raster electron microscopy. Collagenous fibres were demonstrated to be connected with each other by means of fine connective fibres situating mainly transversaly towards the main collagenous fibres. Comparing the data obtained with those from the literature, a suggestion was made on the existence, in the connective tissue, of a special connective system composing of peculiar fibrillar structures which maintains dynamic equilibrium in arrangement of collagenous fibres, muscles, vessels, etc. The system of the connective fibres demonstrates a common compositional principle for all the structures mentioned above, but in every case having its peculiarities.  相似文献

Taste buds were removed from the barbels of the tropical catfishCorydoras aeneus following fixation with a 10% solution of formalinand subsequent treatment with a 0.25% solution of trypsin. Individualepithelial cells were dissociated as free cells. The surfaceof the dermis, including dermal papillae, appeared smooth andwavy, but some undissociated epithelial cells remained on thesmooth surface of the dermis. The surface of the dermis withoutfixation appeared fibrous. A few fine bundles of nerve fibersprotruded from the perimeter on the top of dermal papillae. These observations show that fine bundles of nerve fibers penetratethrough the remaining basement membrane at several points alongthe perimeter on the top of the dermal papillae.  相似文献

Vertebrate claws are used in a variety of important behaviours and are typically composed of a keratinous sheath overlying the terminal phalanx of a digit. Keratinous claws, however, are rare in living amphibians; their microstructure and other features indicate that they probably originated independently from those in amniotes. Here we show that certain African frogs have a different type of claw, used in defence, that is unique in design among living vertebrates and lacks a keratinous covering. These frogs have sectorial terminal phalanges on their hind feet that become functional by cutting through the skin. In the resting state, the phalanx is subdermal and attached to a distal bony nodule, a neomorphic skeletal element, via collagen-rich connective tissue. When erected, the claw breaks free from the nodule and pierces the ventral skin. The nodule, suspended by a sheath attached to the terminal phalanx and supported by collagenous connections to the dermis, remains fixed in place. While superficially resembling the shape of claws in other tetrapods, these are the only vertebrate claws known to pierce their way to functionality.  相似文献

Many fossil lungfish have a system of mineralised tubules in the dermis of the snout, branching extensively and radiating towards the epidermis. The tubules anastomose in the superficial layer of the dermis, forming a plexus consisting of two layers of vessels, with branches that expand into pore canals and flask organs, flanked by cosmine nodules where these are present. Traces of this system are found in the Australian lungfish, Neoceratodus forsteri, consisting of branching tubules in the dermis, a double plexus below the epidermis and dermal papillae entering the epidermis without reaching the surface. In N. forsteri, the tubules, the plexus and the dermal papillae consist of thick, unmineralised connective tissue, enclosing fine blood vessels packed with lymphocytes. Tissues in the epidermis and the dermis of N. forsteri are not associated with deposits of calcium, which is below detectable limits in the skin of the snout at all stages of the life cycle. Canals of the sensory line system, with mechanoreceptors, are separate from the tubules, the plexus and the dermal papillae, as are the electroreceptors in the epidermis. The system of tubules, plexus, dermal papillae and lymphatic capillaries may function to protect the tissues of the snout from infection.  相似文献

The nerves and nerve endings in the skin of tropical cattle were studied using histological and histochemical techniques. Many nerve trunks and fibres were present in the reticular and papillary dermis in both hairy and non-hairy skin sites. In non-hairy skin locations such as the muzzle and lower lip, encapsulated endings akin to Krause and Ruffini end bulbs, which arise from myelinated nerve trunks situated lower down the dermis were observed at the upper papillary layer level. Some fibre trunks seen at this level extended upwards to terminate within dermal papillae as bulb-shaped longitudinally lamellated Pacinian-type endings, while other onion-shaped lamellated nerve structures were located either within dermal papillae or near the dermo-epidermal area. Intraepidermal free-ending nerve fibres, appearing non-myelinated were observed in areas with thick epidermis. Intraepidermal free-ending nerve fibres, appearing non-myelinated were observed in areas with thick epidermis. On hairy skin sites, however, organized nerve endings or intraepidermal nerve endings were not readily identifiable.  相似文献

The structure of the brachiolar arms and adhesive disk of the brachiolaria larvae of Stichaster australis (Verrill) and Coscinasterias calamaria (Gray) was determined from light microscopy and from scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The structure of these organs was very similar in both species. The brachiolar arms are comprised of a stem region terminating in a crown of adhesive papillae which are made up of a variety of secretory cell types. Principal among these are elongated cells producing very electron-dense secretory particles, which are released at the free cell surface attached to cilia. Secretory particles appear to be important in temporary attachment of the brachiolar arms to the substratum. Ciliary sense cells, possibly used in the recognition of specific substrata are located at the tip of adhesive papillae. The adhesive disk is comprised of large cells packed with secretory droplets and elongated intracellular fibres. In the attached adhesive disk, secretory droplets are lost, having formed the cement that attaches the disk to the substratum. It appears that adhesive papillae lateral to the adhesive disk hold the disk in position close to the substratum during secretion and hardening of the cement. The intracellular fibres are the principal anchoring structures running from microvilli (locked into the attachment cement) on the surface of the disk to the underlying connective tissue of the attachment stalk.  相似文献

White's tree frog (Litoria caerulea) has large, adhesive toe pads that are among the softest of all known biological structures. To explore the morphological basis for the physical properties of the toe pads, the internal microstructure of the toe pads in L. caerulea was examined using both light and transmission electron microscopy. Three design elements that are distinct from other areas of skin were observed. First, the keratinocytes comprising the adhesive surface of the toe pad all contained keratin filament bundles (tonofibrils) exhibiting structural anisotropy. Specifically, the curved conformation of the hierarchical (branching) tonofibrils was characterized by the formation of anastomoses consisting of tonofibrils beneath the adhesive cell surface and stem keratin filament bundles concentrated in the lower‐middle part of the dorsal‐side of adhesive cells. Second, the cytoplasm of keratinocytes in the most superficial cell layer contained glycoproteins (stained by periodic acid/Schiff reagent) that are considered to confer high viscoelasticity. Third, the dermis contained large lymph spaces interspersed with elastic fibers and collagen fibers, which were relatively sparsely distributed compared to the dorsal skin of the toe pads. The profiles of these structures were easily deformed by the slight application of pressure. These findings reaffirmed that the unique internal architecture of the toe pads in L. caerulea contributed to their remarkable softness and high deformability, which in turn increased the contact area and provided improved adaptability to the local topography of natural surfaces. The morphology, ultrastrucure, effective elastic modulus, and adhesive properties of two different smooth-type attachment pads were studied in two orthopteran species. Tettigonia viridissima (Ensifera) and Locusta migratoria (Caelifera) have a similar structural organization of their attachment pads. They both possess a flexible exocuticle, where the cuticular fibrils are fused into relatively large rods oriented at an angle to the surface. The compliant material of the pad contributes to the contact formation with the substrate. However, the pad material structure was found to be different in these two species. L. migratoria pads bear a thick sub-superficial layer, as well as a higher density of rods. The indentation experiments showed a higher effective elastic modulus and a lower work of adhesion for L. migratoria pads. When the indentations were made at different depths, a higher effective elastic modulus was revealed at lower indentation depths in both species. This effect is explained by the higher stiffness of the superficial pad layer. The obtained results demonstrate a clear correlation between density of the fibres, thickness of the superficial layer, compliance of the pad, and its adhesive properties. Such material structures and properties may be dependent on the preferred environment of each species.  相似文献

Having compared the microanatomy of the toes of a terrestrial to two climbing species, adaptations were found in the flexor tendons and in the integument. In contrast to Crocidura russula, both Muscardinus avellanarius and Micromys minutus have a tendon-locking mechanism (TLM) that is engaged when the middle phalanx is bent. A ventral thickening of the flexor tendon is situated deep to a thickened portion of the ventral tendon sheath. When twigs or stalks are grasped, the TLM allows less muscular energy to be expended. In C. russula glands are restricted to the terminal pads, but in the climbing species they occur in the sole of the toes as well. In the reed-living M. minutus knob-shaped integumental thickenings, together with the digital pads, stabilize the grip. In contrast the arboreal M. avellanarius often climbs thick branches and shows adaptations for pressing the sole of the feet against the surface. Thereby the tendon attached to the plantar integument of the toes transfers the muscle force directly to the bark. Unlike the other digits on the forefeet of both climbing species, no TLM is present in the anterior digit. In M. minutus this short digit is twisted towards the palm and, with the carpal pads, provides an abutment against the grasping fingers. In M. avellanarius the anterior digit has very thin tendons and is that much reduced in length that it is completely integrated into the digital pad where it acts, at best, as a lateral support of the pad. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Abnormal dermatoglyphs on human volar skin have been reported in many syndromes, but little is known about the pathogenesis. Patterns of pads on rodent limb volar skin are homologous to human dermatoglyphs. METHODS: In previous studies, we showed that transplacental exposure to teratogens induced abnormal pads in mouse fetuses. Moreover, teratogens caused abnormal pad patterns at levels below those that caused skeletal malformations. In this study, we examined morphology and cytokinetics in developing abnormal pads. Pregnant mice were treated with all-trans-retinoic acid at 20 mg/kg orally at embryonal day (E) 12.5 (vaginal plug = E0). The hindlimbs of the embryos were harvested and observed under a light microscope and by scanning electron microscopy. Cell proliferation and cell death were estimated by 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU) labeling, Nile blue A vital staining, and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL). RESULTS: Retinoic acid induced aplasia of the fibular tarsal pad and supernumerary interdigital pads on hindlimbs. Cell proliferation was observed in the area of developing pad, but cell death was very rarely seen in either normal or abnormal pads. CONCLUSIONS: Retinoic acid disturbed pad patterning as a whole rather than individual pad formation.  相似文献

A new dip-inoculum method for detecting bacteriuria which utilizes dehydrated media pads and a nitrite pad attached to a small plastic strip was evaluated in hospitalized patients. Discrepant interpretations were made by independent observers in 9.3% of the specimens with > 10(5) colonies per ml. The media pads failed to support growth of yeast and gave variable results with Staphylococcus epidermidis and non-group D streptococci. False-negative culture results commonly occurred if the patients were receiving antibiotics. The nitrite test occasionally remained positive for brief periods after the elimination of bacteriuria by antibiotics. Conditions and drugs (especially phenazopyridine) which discolor urine interfered with reading both the culture and nitrite tests. Although not suitable for hospital use, or for monitoring therapy, the test strip is probably as reliable as the calibrated loop-streak plate culture for office screening.  相似文献

The appearance of collagen around individual fast twitch (FT) and slow twitch (ST) muscle fibres was investigated in skeletal muscles with different contractile properties using endurance trained and untrained rats as experimental animals. The collagenous connective tissue was analyzed by measuring hydroxyproline biochemically and by staining collagenous material histochemically in M. soleus (MS), M. rectus femoris (MRF), and M. gastrocnemius (MG). The concentration of hydroxyproline in the ST fibres dissected from MS (2.72 +/- 0.35 micrograms X mg-1 d.w.) was significantly higher than that of the FT fibres dissected from MRF (1.52 +/- 0.33 micrograms X mg-1 d.w.). Similarly, the concentration of hydroxyproline was higher in ST (2.54 +/- 0.51 micrograms X mg-1 d.w.) than in FT fibres (1.60 +/- 0.43 micrograms X mg-1 d.w.), when the fibres were dissected from the same muscle, MG. Histochemical staining of collagenous material agreed with the biochemical evidence that MS and the slow twitch area of MG are more collagenous than MRF and the fast twitch area of MG both at the level of perimysium and endomysium. The variables were not affected by endurance training. When discussing the role of collagen in the function of skeletal muscle it is suggested that the different functional demands of different skeletal muscles are also reflected in the structure of intramuscular connective tissue, even at the level of endomysial collagen. It is supposed that the known differences in the elastic properties of fast tetanic muscle compared to slow tonic muscle as, e.g., the higher compliance of fast muscle could at least partly be explained in terms of the amount, type, and structure of intramuscular collagen.  相似文献

The structural organisation of the digital touch pads has been investigated in the vervet monkey (Cercopithecus pygerythrus) by light microscopy. It has been demonstrated that the subcutaneous tissue of the terminal digital pad consists of a highly organised septal framework containing large amounts of elastic fibres, with adipose tissue sweat gland compartments lying between the connective tissue septa. It is suggested that the presence of elastic fibres in the septal framework of the terminal digital pad is an important factor in accomplishing an even more supple response to prehensile and tactile activities of the hand.  相似文献

The mouth apparatus in Branchiobdella pentodonta was studied by electron microscopy. The opening is situated dorsal to the adhesive disk of the anterior sucker and is surrounded by a ring of 16 papillae. The papillae have mono-layered epithelium, muscle fibers, glandular processes, and taste and olfactory organs like “sensitive buttons.” The oral cavity contains jaws with horny teeth and “sensitive buttons,” and is surrounded by a ring of circular muscle fibers that connect to the muscle fiber of the papillae. This apparatus shows some analogies to that of Hirudinea, such as the presence of sucker and jaws with horny teeth.  相似文献

The postembryonic development of the turtle carapace was studied in the aquatic Еmys orbicularis and the terrestrial Тestudo graeca. Differences in the structure of the bony shell in aquatic and terrestrial turtles were shown to be associated with varying degrees of development of epidermal derivatives, namely, the thickness of the scutes and the depth of horny furrows. Sinking of the horny furrows into the dermis causes local changes in the structure of the collagen matrix, which might precondition the acceleration of the ossification. Aquatic turtles possess a relatively thin horny cover, whose derivatives are either weakly developed or altogether absent and thus make no noticeable impact on the growth dynamics of bony plates. Carapace plates of these turtles outgrow more or less evenly around the periphery, which results in uniform costals, relatively narrow and partly reduced neurals, and broad peripherals extending beyond the marginal scutes. In terrestrial turtles (Testudinidae), horny structures are much more developed and exert a considerable impact on the growth of bony elements. As a result, bony plates outgrow unevenly in the dermis, expanding fast in the zones under the horny furrows and slowly outside these zones. This determines the basic features of the testudinid carapace: alternately cuneate shape of costals, an alternation of broad octagonal and narrow tetragonal neurals, and the limitation of the growth of peripherals by pleuro-marginal furrows. The evolutionary significance of morphogenetic and constructional differences in the turtle carapace, and the association of these differences with the turtle habitats are discussed.  相似文献

Specimens of abdomen skin, comprising alternate areas of striae albae and healthy skin, were removed during surgical lipectomy from multiparous and obese women between the ages of 24 and 53 years. A flattening and thinning of the striae albae surface and the almost complete disappearance of dermal papillae was observed in paraffin and thin sections. The papillary dermis was found to be almost completely replaced by straight bundles of collagen fibres running parallel to the skin surface. Immunofluorescence data revealed in these bundles high positivity for type I collagen. The underlying reticular dermis was also found to contain large densely packed bundles of collagen fibres running parallel to the skin surface. Both papillary and reticular dermis collagen fibres were mainly arranged orthogonally to the main axis of the stria. Furthermore, the density of the collagen fibre bundles and the diameter of the collagen fibrils was found to be greater than that of the clinically healthy skin. A larger number of elastic fibres, which presented an abnormal ultrastructural appearance, were visible in pathological papillary and reticular dermis.  相似文献

Adult vibrissa follicle dermal papillae have the capacity to induce hair growth and follicle formation when associated with epidermis from various sources. However, the range of conditions under which hair follicle induction will take place has not been established. The question of whether or not the adult papilla carries information to impose fibre-type specificity has also not been fully answered. This study describes how the implantation of isolated papillae into small incisional cuts on the rat ear pinna resulted in the subsequent emergence of abnormally large hair fibres from the wound sites. Many of these hairs were found to display vibrissa-type characteristics. Histological observations indicated that the papillae had interacted with the edges of the wound epidermis to produce new, and particularly large follicles, while immunohistochemical staining revealed that early follicle construction was accompanied by a profusion of the basement membrane constituents laminin and type IV collagen in the subjacent dermis. These findings show that adult rat papillae retain the capacity, as displayed by embryonic dermis, to determine vibrissa specificity in induced follicles.  相似文献
