Mytilus galloprovincialis (Mollusca: Bivalvia) in a warm-temperate South African estuarine embayment
M Pollard 《African Journal of Aquatic Science》2016,41(1):57-65
The distribution, population structure, condition and gonad indices, and the attachment strengths of the invasive Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis are described from the Knysna Estuary, South Africa. Mussels were found in the rocky intertidal at the mouth of the estuary and on all man-made hard substrata as far as 12?km from the mouth in 2013. However, mussel beds were found only in the lower reach of the estuary, where mussel densities were as high as 120 per 0.01?m2. When compared to mussels from the embayment regions of the estuary, those at the estuary mouth, where wave action was high, were generally smaller, had significantly lower condition and gonad indices, and greater attachment strength. This suggests that mussels within the sheltered regions of the estuary invest more energy in growth and reproduction, and that this is one reason for their success as an invasive species in the Knysna estuarine embayment. 相似文献

The insoluble matrix of larval shells of the marine bivalve mollusk Mytilus galloprovincialis is investigated by confocal laser scanning microscopy using a GFP fusion protein with a chitin-binding domain for labeling of chitinous structures. We show that chitinous material is present in the larval shell, presumably as a chitin-protein complex. We further show that the structure of the chitinous material changes with the development of the larvae. We conclude from the presence of characteristic chitinous structures in certain shell regions that chitin fulfills an important function in the formation and functionality of larval bivalve shells. 相似文献

In a few well-known cases, the biological consequences of the disruption of lim-1 homeodomain (HD) genes have demonstrated the important roles of these genes in vertebrate development, especially in the nervous tissue, kidney, and gonads. Functional assay approaches require information not only about lim-1 gene organization, but also about properties and tissue localization of Lim-1 proteins. Although lim-1 genes have been identified in certain phyla of invertebrates, no information is available on Lim-1 proteins and genes in bivalve molluscs. Our study represents the beginning stage of identification of the Lim-1-related proteins in marine bivalves. Using antibodies against the C-terminal region of the Xenopus laevis Lim-1 protein, we describe cross-reactive antigen patterns in adults and early embryos of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, as well as in sea urchin and chick embryos. In adult mussels, nervous ganglia and gonads display the most prominent Lim-1 immunoreactivity. Further, the antibodies verified the prediction that mussel Lim-1 antigens, like Lim-1 HD proteins in general, can be localized in the nucleus. Moreover, antibody detection allowed us to identify the Lim-1-like antigens in unfertilized mature eggs, as well as in very early embryos of bivalve molluscs and sea urchins (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus). In mussel eggs and embryos, Lim-1 antigens are expressed in multiple forms (40, 45, and 65 kDa), as detected by SDS-PAGE followed by Western blot. Taken together, the observations emphasize the conservation of the Lim-1 protein expression pattern in the nervous tissue and gonads of different animal groups, and demonstrate that Lim-1-like polypeptides can be maternally accumulated in eggs and, therefore, are present in very early embryos before zygotic expression of the genes begins. 相似文献

Genetic variation was assayed electrophoretically at 13–16 loci in Modiolus modiolus, Mytilus edulis, and Mytilus galloprovincialis. High genetic distance ( D ) values were observed between Modiolus modiolus and Mytilus edulis (1.516 ± 0.523) and between Modiolus modiolus and Mytilus galloprovincialis (1.564 ± 0.539), whereas the distance between Mytilus edulis and M. galloprovincialis (0.167 ± 0.118) was rather low. The systematic status ot Mytilus edulis and M. galloprovincialis is discussed in relation to these lindings and the genetic distance values are used to estimate divergence times which in turn are compared with paleontological estimates. The observations of high average heterozygosity in Modiolus modiolus, and high correlations of locus heterozygosity between taxa are discussed briefly. 相似文献

Adaptivity to short-term and long-term changes in water temperature and salinity was studied in larvae of the bivalve mollusk Mytilus trossulus. It was shown that water temperature of 4°C mostly suppressed growth and development of larvae. A temperature of 20°C promoted an enhanced larval growth and development. Though a temperature of 20°C caused enhanced larval growth, the temperature was not optimal, while its effect caused quality diversity of larval development, owing to the difference in their growth rates. Such diversity was not observed at moderate temperatures of 10 and 15°C. At 20°C, fast-growing mussel larvae were very sensitive to temperature drops. Growth of slowly-growing individuals did not depend on temperature in the range of 10 to 20°C. Daily temperature variations by 3–8°C did not markedly affect growth and development of the larvae. A continuous 24-h exposure to temperature drops by 3–8°C did not influence these very important physiological characteristics either. A salinity drop down to 8‰ exerted an adverse effect only on early larvae. Later on, the larvae showed their ability to adapt to such a strong desalination. The negative effect of reduced salinity (to 8‰) upon mussel larvae was increased at a temperature increase to 20°C. 相似文献

Habitat subdivision and resource partitioning of the birds of the evergreen high forest of the southern Cape are investigated. Most species utilize a wide stratal range with insectivores predominating in the lower strata and mixed-feeders and frugivores in the upper strata. Members of the respective foraging guilds used a different stratum or were separated by differences in morphology or mass, suggesting different sized prey and limited competition. 相似文献

Transaminases are among the crucial enzymes in amino acid metabolism, which in aquatic organisms is known to be affected by exposure to oil hydrocarbons. The transamination reactions in Mytilus edulis L. were studied to estimate their adequacy to indicate short term oil exposure in mussels. The transamination reactions were measured using paper chromatography and spectrophotometry. A high degree of transamination was observed between 2 oxoglutarate and alanine, aspartate and ornithine. A slight degree of transamination was shown with methionine, leucine, isoleucine, phenylalanine, serine, tryptophan, threonine, tyrosine and valine. No transamination was observed between 2 oxoglutarate and glycine, arginine, histidine, lysine, proline, citrulline and alanine. The effect of the water accommodated fraction WAF of crude oil on selected transaminase reactions was measured. The highest changes during the WAF exposure were mostly observed in the gills and mantle. Alanine aminotransferase EC 2.6.1.2 activity in the mantle was, at its highest, 55 over the control. Aspartate aminotransferase EC 2.6.1.1 activity increased in the gills by 52 . For ornithine transamination, in the gills the highest increase was by 75 and in the mantle by 50 . The metabolic pathways involved in the alterations of aminotransferase activities are discussed. It is concluded that ornithine transamination in gills is a potential indicator for short term crude oil exposure in Mytilus edulis. More studies are needed to evaluate the effects of other organic pollutants on ornithine transamination. 相似文献

Summary Effects of forest plant species composition and physiognomy on bird and invertebrate communities were investigated in three discrete, relatively undisturbed forest types along a dry-wet soil moisture gradient. Using discriminant function analysis, a 100% floristic and a 78% vegetation structural discrimination were obtained between the three forest types. However, the bird communities of these different forest types were very similar in species composition, and had much lower densities than those normally encountered in other, superficially similar forests. Although an 81% discrimination between forest types was attained through analysis of ground surface invertebrates, measures of litter and aerial invertebrate abundance were also of limited use as discriminators. Historical and biogeographic factors, as well as the low nutritional levels in the soil and vegetation may be the causes of low bird and invertebrate density and diversity. It is concluded that floristics and vegetation structure have, at best, a minor influence on bird community structure, and possibly also on invertebrate community structure in the Knysna Forest. 相似文献

Gyrodinium corsicum Paulmier produced massive blooms
in Alfacs Bay (Ebro Delta, NW Mediterranean Sea) from December 1994 to
April 1995, a period characterized by an initial period of water stability
and low outward flux of water during subsequent months. The highest cell
densities of G.corsicum were found at the bottom of
the bay during the population maintenance period (from January to March).
During the day, no differences in the vertical distribution of
G.corsicum were observed and no diel in
situ vertical migration of the population was recorded. The
in situ growth rate of G.corsicum
was estimated using the cell cycle method since the cell division cycle was
well phased with the daily light cycle. The S phase fraction of
G.corsicum reached a maximum near the middle of the
dark period. The G2M peak usually occurred in the dark period. The duration
of the S phase was 2.1-8.7 h and the duration of the G2M phase was 2.6-7.7
h. The estimated specific in situ growth rate of
G.corsicum ranged from 0.94
day-1 during the initial phases of the bloom to 0.3
day-1 when the bloom was well developed. Growth
rates, measured in different locations at the same time, varied by a factor
of 1.5, suggesting that different parts of the same blooming population
were at different stages of growth. The persistence of the
G.corsicum bloom with high cell densities
(105-106 cells
l-1) at the bottom of the bay is discussed in
relation to the low cell losses by physical dispersion in this area and the
lack of upward vertical migration of G.corsicum.

Earlier published records of the gastropod Hydrobia from the warm temperate Knysna Lagoon on the Indian Ocean coast of South Africa are in error. Nevertheless, an animal hitherto identified as an Assiminea (Assimineidae) or as a Tomichia (Pomatiopsidae) is in fact a Hydrobia s.l., and it does occur intertidally within the Knysna system. The same species also occurs in salt pans in the cool temperate Great Berg Estuary on the Atlantic coast of South Africa. This extends the distribution of confirmed species of the dominant coastal hydrobiid mudsnails of the northern hemisphere into the southern hemisphere. H. knysnaensis (Krauss) occurs patchily at low density near the head of the Knysna Estuary in waters of low salinity. This appears to be a suboptimal habitat, and it is suggested that Hydrobia is restricted to this zone as a result of interference competition from potamidid mudwhelks and ocypodid crabs. The prevalence of potamidids and ocypodids in the tropics and in the temperate southern hemisphere may account for the rareness or absence of hydrobiids in these areas. Unlike its equally intertidal relative, the widespread North Atlantic/Arctic H. ulvae, H. knysnaensis develops directly like other Hydrobia. 相似文献

In this study, the oxygen consumption, ammonia excretion, and filtration rate were monitored in Mytilus edulis in response to administration of the two pesticides, methamidophos and omethoate. Five sublethal concentrations (1, 10, 50, 100, and 200 µgL?1) were administered over 96 h. Oxygen consumption rates increased following administration of all concentrations of methamidophos for 96 h and to the lower concentrations of omethoate (1, 10, and 50 µg L?1) from 6 to 24 h. Over 24 h, oxygen consumption decreased significantly. Ammonia excretion rates were higher than the control after 36 h of exposure to methamidophos, while reduction was observed when M. edulis was exposed to omethoate. The O:N ratios increased when the animals were first exposed to these two pesticides and then decreased at all the concentrations. At the concentrations of 100 and 200 µgL?1, the O:N ratio was below 30 after 72 h. The filtration rate of M. edulis decreased with the increasing concentration of pesticide exposure. 相似文献

cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA) plays a crucial role in the release of the catch state of molluskan muscles, but the nature of the enzyme in such tissues is unknown. In this paper, we report the purification of the catalytic (C) subunit of PKA from the posterior adductor muscle (PAM) of the sea mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. It is a monomeric protein with an apparent molecular mass of 40.0+/-2.0kDa and Stoke's radius 25.1+/-0.3A. The protein kinase activity of the purified enzyme was inhibited by both isoforms of the PKA regulatory (R) subunit that we had previously characterized in the mollusk, and also by the inhibitor peptide PKI(5-24). On the other hand, the main proteins of the contractile apparatus of PAM were partially purified and their ability to be phosphorylated in vitro by purified PKA C subunit was analyzed. The results showed that twitchin, a high molecular mass protein associated with thick filaments, was the better substrate for endogenous PKA. It was rapidly phosphorylated with a stoichiometry of 3.47+/-0.24mol Pmol(-1) protein. Also, catchin, paramyosin, and actin were phosphorylated, although more slowly and to a lesser extent. On the contrary, myosin heavy chain (MHC) and tropomyosin were not phosphorylated under the conditions used. 相似文献

The Assimineidae are a family of amphibious microgastropods that can be mostly found in estuaries and mangroves in South Africa. These snails often occur in great numbers and are ecologically important to the St Lucia Estuary, which forms a crucial part of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Genetic and shell morphometric analyses were conducted on individuals collected from nine localities distributed from the northern lake regions to the southern lake and the mouth of the St Lucia estuarine lake. Mitochondrial (COI) and nuclear (28S) DNA was used to construct Bayesian Inference, Neighbour-joining, Maximum Parsimony and Maximum Likelihood trees. Principal Component Analysis and Cluster Analysis were performed on standard shell parameter data. Results indicate that two different taxa are present in St Lucia. The taxon comprising individuals from the South Lake and St Lucia Estuary Mouth is identified as Assiminea cf. capensis Bartsch, in accordance with the latest taxonomic consensus. The taxon comprising assimineid individuals from False Bay, North Lake and South Lake, is here tentatively named “Assiminea” aff. capensis (Sowerby). These two taxa exhibit patterns of spatial overlap that appear to vary depending on environmental parameters, particularly salinity. The need to resolve the complex taxonomy of assimineids is highlighted. 相似文献

The intensity of infection of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis Lamarck in the Black Sea by the turbellarian Urastoma cyprinae (Graff), which lives on its gills, was found to be higher in larger hosts, reaching a maximum in mussels of 50–70 mm length. Greater numbers occured in mussels inhabiting a silty bottom than in cultivated mussels suspended above the bottom. Over the period 1982–1987, U. cyprinae was most numerous in winter and especially so in years that were colder. The spionid polychaete Polydora ciliata (Johnston) also infects M. galloprovincialis, burrowing into the shell. Young spionids of up to 1 mm length occured in mussels with a shell length of 35 mm. Numbers of this commensal reached a maximum in mussels of intermediate size. 相似文献

The introduced mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis is progressively increasing in abundance along the south coast of South Africa. Quantitative 0.1 m2 samples were collected in the mid-zone of an indigenous Perna perna mussel bed in the 1980s prior to the arrival M. galloprovincialis (12) and in the 2000s during the M. galloprovincialis invasion (16). In addition, in situ counts of M. galloprovincialis were done on eight occasions between 1993 and 2005, and in the low- and high-zones on four occasions. In the mid-zone M. galloprovincialis was absent until 1987, its mean densities were low (< 15 individuals/0.1 m2) between 1993 and 1996, but thereafter increased steadily, peaking in 2004 (at 721 individuals/0.1 m2), before declining in 2005 (331 individuals/0.1 m2). The greatest densities of M. galloprovincialis were recorded at the high-zone (1121 individuals/0.1 m2) and the smallest in the low-zone. As M. galloprovincialis numbers increased, there was an associated, but smaller decline in P. perna numbers and the overall density of mussels increased significantly (P < 0.05). No major change was recorded in the size composition of P. perna. The density of associated fauna differed significantly (P < 0.01) between sampling dates with the lowest and highest values being recorded near the ‘beginning’ (2001) and ‘end’ (2005)
of the invasion period respectively. These differences were largely due to variations in the density of barnacles, and the
toothed barnacle Chthamalus
dentatus appeared to be the only associated faunal species that was directly affected by the M. galloprovincialis invasion, experiencing a significantly (P ≤ 0.05), but temporary decline in density and biomass values. 相似文献
