This paper presents a rapid bio-assessment method for assessing the ecological condition of streams and rivers in Namibia. The method uses the composition and abundance of aquatic invertebrates, which are identified in the field, mostly to family level. The method is based on the South African Scoring System version 5 (SASS5), which has been modified to account for additional tropical invertebrate taxa that occur in northern Namibia. The method was applied to the Zambezi River near Katima Mulilo and NASS results were found to fluctuate predictably with changes in water level. Training of Namibian personnel to apply the method, as part of the National Water Quality Monitoring Programme, is recommended.  相似文献

Summary

The effect of season on the South African Scoring System (SASS) biotic index for rapid assessment of water quality using benthic macroinvertebrates was investigated using the Yellow Jacket and Mazowe Rivers in Zimbabwe as a case study. Several impacts in the area degraded water quality. These were habitat destruction, acid mine drainage and organic pollution. SASS score at all sites changed with season. At and downstream from polluted sites, water quality determined using SASS was best at the end of the rainy season and it deteriorated steadily into the dry season. SASS scores from sites upstream of pollution appeared to improve towards the end of the rainy season. Average Score Per Taxon indices did not have a significant pattern of seasonal variation. SASS was designed to monitor water quality in South African rivers, so when implementing any monitoring programme, selection of sampling season and the interpretation of results in areas with similar climate patterns should take seasonal effects into account, It must be appreciated that water quality at impacted sites is a dynamic variable related both to the activities of polluters and to season.  相似文献

Chemical‐based studies have shown pollution of rivers in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. However, as bioassessment is not a component of the river assessment and monitoring programmes, information on the ecological status of the rivers is limited. The study assessed the ecological status of the Little and Greater Akaki Rivers using macroinvertebrates. Macroinvertebrates were collected from twelve sites twice in the dry and wet seasons. There was abundance of few tolerant, collector‐gatherer taxa with a loss of most sensitive taxa that used to be part of the river systems. Macroinvertebrate communities from upper and lower reaches showed complete differentiation on the nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMS) ordination graph with upstream reaches composed of relatively sensitive taxa while the lower reaches dominated by tolerant taxa. Multiresponse permutation procedure (MRPP) showed significant difference between the two reaches. Macroinvertebrate communities from the dry and wet seasons did not show differentiation on the NMS ordination graph and MRPP did not show significant difference. Both rivers scored low in the South African Scoring System (SASS 5) and ETHbios, indicating ecological degradation. The results suggest that several decades of environmental degradation might have led to impoverished regional species pool, consisting mainly tolerant and generalist taxa constant throughout the year.  相似文献

The study assessed the impact of damming on water quality and macroinvertebrate assemblages. It also assessed the response of macroinvertebrate‐based indices of water quality to damming. Macroinvertebrate community and physicochemical variables data were collected from 86 sites. Twenty‐nine sites downstream of dams were compared with 27 sites above impoundments and 30 sites on nearby unregulated streams. Of the downstream sites, 13 were situated <1 km from a dam while the other 16 were situated >1 km from a dam. A decrease in temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity and total dissolved solids was observed in sites immediately downstream of impoundments. Macroinvertebrate community structure and South African Scoring System (SASS) scores closely followed the damming‐induced changes in water quality. However, water quality variables, macroinvertebrate community structure and SASS scores reverted back to typical upstream conditions in distances around 1 km from dams. Stream recovery from dam‐induced changes was demonstrated with streams recovering at distances around 1 km from the point of regulation in corroboration with predictions of the serial discontinuity concept (SDC). These dam‐induced changes also reflected themselves in SASS scores suggesting potential usefulness of SASS in monitoring ecological integrity of tropical rivers following disturbances like damming.  相似文献

Macroinvertebrate biotope preferences and the influence of differences in the availability of biotopes on individual taxa, macroinvertebrate assemblages and a biotic index, the South African Scoring System (SASS), were investigated in two regions of South Africa. 2. Among biotope differences in individual taxa and macroinvertebrate assemblages resulted in differences in SASS scores, with differences in assemblages being greater among biotopes than between sites. 3. All three metrics studied (SASS score, number of taxa and average score per taxon, ASPT), differed significantly among biotopes, with highest scores consistently recorded in the stones biotope, while lowest SASS scores and fewest taxa were recorded in the sand biotope. 4. SASS score and number of taxa were positively, while ASPT was negatively correlated with number of biotopes sampled. 5. The observed biotope differences highlight the importance of sampling and comparing data from sites separately for each biotope.  相似文献

Summary

The rapid bioassessment method, SASS (South African Scoring System) has been developed to assess water quality in riverine ecosystems. It is a scoring system based on the presence or absence of macroinvertebrate groups, and yields three values, namely SASS4 Score, Number of Taxa and Average Score Per Taxon (ASPT). The current and future use of SASS, including incorporation into the National Biomonitoring Programme for Riverine Ecosystems, necessitates evaluation of this bioassessment method. This study focuses on three aspects. namely spatial variation in SASS scores, including regional and longitudinal (sub-regional) variation; temporal variation in SASS scores, and the effect of biotope availability on SASS scores.  相似文献

Biological monitoring tools are largely lacking for many countries, resulting in adoption of tools developed from other countries/regions, but in many instances, their applicability to the new system has not been explicitly evaluated. The objective of the study was to test the applicability of the South African Scoring Systems Version 5 (SASS5) to urban streams in Zimbabwe. The study evaluated the relationship between water quality variables and SASS5 indices/metrics [(SASS and average score per taxon (ASPT)] and found high degree of concordance between water chemistry parameters and SASS5 metrics, indicating that both SASS and ASPT scores are sensitive to detect environmental changes. This result can be attributed to occurrence of ubiquitous macroinvertebrate taxa sharing similar environmental tolerances with those recorded for South African systems. The applicability of SASS5 metrics need to be tested across different geographical and climatic regions in the country (taking into consideration seasonal variations that are important drivers of benthic faunal assemblages in lotic systems) and disparities among the regions compared for the adoption of the index in the entire country. The SASS5 metrics can also be further strengthened by (a) taking into account the relative abundance of taxa and (b) also improving on its ability to reflect other forms of perturbations besides eutrophication and organic pollution such heavy metal pollution.  相似文献

Macroinvertebrate assemblages can vary with season as a result of changing environmental conditions and phenology of individual species. The objective of this study was to determine whether results from the South African Scoring System version 5 (SASS5) are affected by season. The standard SASS5 protocol was used to sample three sites on the Skeerpoort River, South Africa, in autumn, winter and spring 2013, and summer 2014. At each site, stream morphology was characterised and physico-chemical variables were measured. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare SASS indices in relation to site and season, and a one-way ANOVA was used to test the effect of season using both current and historical data. Macroinvertebrate assemblage similarity of sites was determined using non-metric multidimensional scaling ordination, followed by analysis of similarity. Whilst macroinvertebrate assemblages differed between seasons and sites, there was no seasonal variation in the values of SASS indices, but they did differ between sites. SASS5 appears to be robust to seasonal variation in macroinvertebrate assemblage and seems suitable for use throughout the year in a perennial river draining the South African highveld region.  相似文献

Invasive alien trees along river banks can reduce indigenous biodiversity, while their removal can restore it. We assessed here family- and species-level responses of river benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages to three riparian vegetation types (natural, alien trees, cleared of alien trees) in the Cape Floristic Region biodiversity hotspot. High species beta diversity of this highly endemic fauna meant that between-river, as well as seasonal effects, dominated assemblage patterns. SASS5, a qualitative, rapid bioassessment technique, based on the sensitivity of the families present, was used as a measure of river health and, indirectly, of water quality. SASS indicated a decline in water quality conditions after alien clearing, a likely response to the greater insolation and apparent erosion of cleared banks, resulting in elevated temperatures and suspended solids and lowered oxygen levels. Overall, cleared and natural sites were more similar to each other than to alien sites, suggesting some post-clearing recovery. However, many sensitive, endemic taxa survived in alien-invaded sites, and more than in the natural sites. These endemic species made use of shady, cool, high-oxygen levels under the alien tree canopy. However, endemics declined in overall abundance in sites cleared of aliens, being replaced by more tolerant, widespread taxa. Clearance of the alien trees opened up the rivers to sunny conditions, which had a major impact on community composition. Vegetation types, oxygen levels and river width were important environmental variables affecting these macroinvertebrate responses. Re-establishment of invertebrate biodiversity matched that of indigenous vegetation, with the most sensitive endemic taxa only recovering after establishment of bushy indigenous and shade-producing fynbos. Therefore, for biodiversity conservation objectives to be achieved, it is essential that indigenous plants are maintained and encouraged during and after clearing to ensure the recovery of endemic and sensitive taxa.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess and compare the water quality of the Gwebi and Mukuvisi Rivers, on the basis of selected physicochemical variables and macroinvertebrate community structure. Five sites where selected on both rivers and these were sampled on three separate occasions between January and July of 1998. The water variables measured were the concentrations of iron, chromium, zinc, lead, copper, manganese, chlorides, fluorides, sulphates, total phosphates, nitrates, ammonia, total dissolved salts, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand, as well as pH, conductivity, temperature, water surface velocity and discharge. The concentration of most of the chemical variables was relatively similar along the course of the Gwebi River, but there were drastic increases in the levels of iron, chromium, copper, zinc, chlorides, fluorides, sulphates, and ammonia along the Mukuvisi River. The two rivers were different with respect to the physicochemical variables, with the exception of the first site on the Mukuvisi, which was similar to sites on the Gwebi River. This was because of the differences in the levels of human activities on the two rivers. Industrial, sewage and domestic pollution has had an adverse effect on the water quality of the Mukuvisi River. There was a sharp decline in the number of macroinvertebrate taxa along the Mukuvisi River. The lower reaches of the river where dominated by oligochaetes and Chironimidae larvae. Sample score classification of water quality based on the South African Scoring System Version 4 (SASS4) showed that most of the Mukuvisi river had poor quality water quality, whilst much of the Gwebi River had fair quality water. The HABS1 habitat assessment index was used to assess habitat quality at each site. Although much of the Mukuvisi recorded fair to good habitat scores and had generally higher habitat scores than sites on the Gwebi, the SASS scores were generally lower compared to those along the Gwebi. The sample scores and average score per taxon (ASPT) of the SASS4 showed that the Mukuvisi River was of much lower quality than the Gwebi. Both the sample score and ASPT were negatively and significantly (p<0.05) correlated to most of the physicochemical variables. The water quality variables accounted for 61.1% and 59.0% of the differences in the sample score and ASPT respectively. There was a marginal decrease in the Margalef and Shannon indices along the Gwebi River, but the Simpson's index remained relatively constant. Along the Mukuvisi River, there was a clear and distinct decrease in the magnitude of all three diversity indices, indicating decreasing macroinvertebrate community structure. The change in water physicochemical variables accounted for 61.3%, 69.2% and 87.2% of the changes in the Margalef, Shannon and Simpson's index respectively. The study provides evidence that the changes in macroinvertebrate community structure along the Mukuvisi River is due to decline in the water quality. On the Gwebi, water quality is not the main factor determining macroinvertebrate community structure.  相似文献

Seasonal variability of macroinvertebrate assemblages was examined in two regions of South Africa: Western Cape and Mpumalanga. Sampling was undertaken at reference sites using the rapid bioassessment method SASS4 (South African Scoring System, Version 4). This study examined the influence of sampling season on the occurrence of taxa, macroinvertebrate assemblages and SASS scores. In the Western Cape a few taxa were more common at certain times of the year, and multivariate analysis of macroinvertebrate assemblages showed that assemblages grouped by season. The number of taxa and the Average Score per Taxon (ASPT) were significantly different among seasons in the Western Cape, with fewer taxa recorded in winter compared to summer, and significantly higher ASPT values recorded in winter and spring than summer and autumn. Whereas more taxa were recorded in autumn than in spring, a higher proportion of sensitive and high-scoring taxa were recorded in spring. In Mpumalanga macroinvertebrate assemblages did not group by season, and differences in SASS scores were not significant, although more taxa were recorded in winter than in spring or autumn, and ASPTs were slightly higher in winter than in spring. Results are discussed in relation to ecological reference conditions and the interpretation of bioassessment data.  相似文献

We investigated epilithic diatoms in rivers draining to the Nyanza Bay in Lake Victoria (Kenya) with the aim of determining environmental gradients in the assemblages and testing the usefulness of diatom metrics from temperate regions. Spatial and temporal variations of assemblages were studied in 12 sites of three rivers. Kibos, Nyando, and Kisat rivers contained 224 diatom taxa collected on seven sampling occasions over 4 years. Species richness showed a marginal decrease downstream and was the lowest at sites with high conductivity and ammonia–nitrogen levels. Two-Way Indicator Species Analysis and Canonical Correspondence Analysis revealed two major groups of river sites. Conductivity, alkalinity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, and silicate were the most important variables influencing species distribution. Ecological diatom metrics of temperate regions and the Specific Pollution sensitivity Index showed good relationships with environmental variables. Both diatom assemblages and averaged indicator values were strong in predicting sites of ecological deterioration and in differentiating an upstream site of better quality (drinking water supply of Kisumu), thereby confirming epilithic diatoms as suitable water quality indicators in equatorial rivers. The use of metrics initially designed for temperate rivers, however, appears less valuable in good quality tropical rivers because potential indicators are not considered.  相似文献

Monitoring changes in population levels of a wide range of species in biodiversity research and conservation requires practical, easy-to-use and efficient assessment and monitoring methods. Dragonflies (Insecta: Odonata) are a valuable tool for assessing aquatic systems and have been used as indicators of ecological health, ecological integrity, and environmental change, including climatic change, as well as indicators of habitat recovery. We field-tested a freshwater ecological integrity index, the Dragonfly Biotic Index (DBI), based on dragonfly assemblages at the local scale, and compared the DBI to a biodiversity index (average taxonomic distinctness, AvTD) as well as to a standard freshwater benthic macroinvertebrate-based freshwater health index (South African Scoring System, using Average Score Per Taxon, ASPT). We sampled 20 river sites, selected a priori. Adult dragonflies and benthic macroinvertebrates were collected using standardized methods. Environmental variables were collected in situ, and water samples taken. Temperature and pH were the most important physical environmental variables in explaining the assemblage structure, and we found significant abiotic–biotic relationships, as well as biotic–biotic relationships. Overall, dragonflies were more sensitive to changes in river condition than were macroinvertebrates, in part because they were responding at the species rather than higher taxonomic level. AvTD scores did not show any significant relationship with changes in river condition. Furthermore, sites with low biotic scores (indicating disturbance) had high AvTD values. In contrast, DBI site value and ASPT scores were highly significantly correlated. We conclude that dragonfly assemblages in the form of a DBI are an excellent tool for environmental assessment and monitoring freshwater biodiversity, with the potential to replace labour-intensive benthic macroinvertebrate-based freshwater quality assessments, such as SASS.  相似文献

Disturbance plays an integral part in generating heterogeneity required for ecosystem persistence, but the increased amplitude and duration of disturbances linked to drivers of global change could result in ecosystem shifts or collapse. Biomonitoring over time provides insights into trajectories of ecosystem change. The responses of two instream animal taxa to two contrasting disturbance events, a major flood event and the long-term cumulative effects of land-use changes, were assessed in 1999–2012 by quantifying variation and change in abundance of functional groups based on flow rate sensitivity, water quality and metrics of ecological condition. All metrics recovered to pre-flood conditions within seven months after the flood event. Similarly, cumulative impacts of land use effected significant decreases in some but not all metrics. Indices that did not change, including SASS total score and ASPT, were the result of insufficient consideration of the decrease in the abundance of sensitive taxa specifically, and the abundance of all taxa in general. The decrease in abundance of sensitive taxa could signal imminent collapse in certain metrics. Evidence is also provided for a shift in the structure of fish assemblages linked to the decrease and loss of taxa sensitive to ecosystem degradation caused by the longer-term impacts of land-use change.  相似文献

Chironomids of the River Mignone (Central Italy) were studied in order to examine their community structure and their relationship to some common biological indices (Biotic Score, Extended Biotic Index, Indice Biotique de Qualité Générale) utilizing the total macroinvertebrate fauna (chironomids generally at family level) for water quality assessment in rivers.A total of 36 taxa belonging to Tanypodinae (2 taxa), Orthocladiinae (22 taxa) and Chironominae (12 taxa) was collected at seven stations four times during a year. The results support the importance of the chironomid identification in water quality assessment studies in rivers, and demonstrate the usefulness of the factorial correspondence analysis as ordination technique based on both qualitative and quantitative chironomid data to determine environmental quality gradients.The value as bioindicator of some taxa was discussed, and chironomid assemblages were related to biological water quality of the river according to functional feeding groups.This study forms part of a larger Research project supported by MPI and CNR grants and is aimed at the biological water quality assessment of the river and at the analysis of the total macrobenthic community.  相似文献

An assessment of water and habitat quality, based on macroinvertebrate assemblage indices and qualitative habitat scores (QHS), was undertaken in the Honi and Naro Moru rivers, Kenya, in 2011. The two rivers are important as water sources for the local communities and as habitat for organisms such as invertebrates in the national parks there. The Naro Moru upstream site (QHS: 83%) is unmodified, with minimal human influence. The Honi downstream site and the Naro Moru midstream and downstream sites experienced moderate to large modifications in habitat and biota (QHS: 40–80%). South African scoring system (SASS) scores ranged from 43 (Naro Moru downstream) to 165 (Honi upstream), and there was a decrease in SASS scores with distance downstream. Based on the multimetric index (MI), the Honi and Naro Moru upstream and midstream sites have good water quality (MI: 0.6–0.8), whereas the Honi midstream and downstream sites, and the Naro Moru downstream site, have moderate water quality (MI: 0.4–0.6). Human activities had a negative effect on water quality and habitats. Preventive and conservation measures should be taken in the usage of the Naro Moru and Honi rivers.  相似文献

2010年8月对广东省6座水库及其入库河流的大型底栖无脊椎动物群落进行采样调查,并分别利用Goodnight-Whitley指数和BPI指数对水库及入库河流的水质进行评估。结果表明,水库共检出底栖动物13种,优势种为霍甫水丝蚓(Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri)、苏氏尾鳃蚓(Branchiura sowerbyi)和八斑多足摇蚊(Polypedilum masudai),种类丰富度变动范围为2~5种,平均密度为277ind/m2,变动范围160~480ind/m2。入库河流的种类丰富度和密度均高于水库,共检出底栖动物28种,优势种为苏氏尾鳃蚓、霍甫水丝蚓、花翅前突摇蚊(Procladius choreus)和河蚬(Corbicula fluminea),种类丰富度变动范围为2~7种,底栖动物平均密度为382ind/m2,变动范围192~816ind/m2。水质评价结果表明,6座水库的水质状况总体良好,但入库河流均受到不同程度的污染,污染较为严重的黄岗河和黄羌河,其水库汤溪水库和公平水库也产生了污染。  相似文献

Small intermittent rivers play an important role in the limnology of African lakes. The Mwenda River occurs on the southern shore of Lake Kariba. Its flow is governed by the incidence of tropical thunderstorms. During the dry period the river is reduced to a series of turbid pools. Physicochemically the river behaves similarly to a sheltered region of the lake. One river station deviates from the normal pattern because of the insulating effect of a Salvinia mat, and because of its permanent connection with the lake. River flooding flushes both nutrients and major ions into the lake. River phytoplankton populations peak prior to the flushing out of the river. Diatom populations are composed of cosmopolitan tropical taxa.  相似文献

Large river bioassessment protocols lag far behind those of wadeable streams and often rely on fish assemblages of individual rivers. We developed a regional macroinvertebrate index and assessed relative condition of six large river tributaries to the upper Mississippi and Ohio rivers, Midwest USA. In 2004 and 2005, benthic macroinvertebrates, water chemistry, and habitat data were collected from randomly selected sites on each of the St. Croix, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Scioto, Wabash, and Illinois rivers. We first identified the human disturbance gradient using principal components analysis (PCA) of abiotic data. From the PCA, least disturbed sites showed strong separation from stressed sites along a gradient contrasting high water clarity, canopy cover, habitat scores, and plant-based substrates at one end and higher conductivity and nutrient concentrations at the other. Evaluation of 97 benthic metrics identified those with good range, responsiveness, and relative scope of impairment, as well as redundancies with other metrics. The final index was composed of Diptera taxa richness, EPT taxa richness, Coleoptera taxa richness, percent oligochaete and leech taxa, percent collector-filterer individuals, predator taxa richness, percent burrower taxa, tolerant taxa richness, and percent facultative individuals. Each of the selected metrics was scored using upper and lower thresholds based on all sites, and averaging across the nine metric scores, we obtained the Non-wadeable Macroinvertebrate Assemblage Condition Index (NMACI). The NMACI showed a strong response to disturbance using a validation data set and was highly correlated with non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) ordination axes of benthic taxa. The cumulative distribution function of index scores for each river showed qualitative differences in condition among rivers. NMACI scores were highest for the federally protected St. Croix River and lowest for the Illinois River. Other rivers were intermediate and generally reflected the mixture of land use types within individual basins. Use of regional reference sites, though setting a high level of expectation, provides a valuable frame of reference for the potential of large river benthic communities that will aid management and restoration efforts.  相似文献

Summary

Although the emphasis of the recent National Rivers Research Initiative (now the Research Programme for the Management of Rivers) in South Africa was on river research in that country, the reality is that in southern Africa many watercourses are shared by more than one country. Therefore a central issue in integrated river basin management and development should be the recognition of the principle of international joint planning, conservation, monitoring and research.

Co-operation and a better understanding of shared waters would prevent deleterious impacts, not only in the country where they occur, but also in those downstream. With this in mind, since the early 1980s Namibia has worked on joint cross-border projects in efforts to manage and conserve her shared water bodies. These include joint river gauging exercises, biological control of Saivinia molesta in the eastern Caprivi region and, more recently, the application of a biological monitoring technique, the South African Scoring System version 4, to north-eastern perennial rivers.

The formation of the Joint Permanent Water Commission between Botswana and Namibia enabled the Departments of Water Affairs of both countries to work together on their shared rivers. The establishment of the Permanent Okavango River Basin Water Commission between Angola, Botswana and Namibia in 1994 improved this co-operation even further. Namibia and its' counterparts are thus committed to sharing information, co-ordinating research and monitoring activities and to undertaking detailed studies to improve their knowledge of these shared systems.

Such cross-border co-operation is vital for the survival of shared river systems not only as ecological entities in their own right, but also as sources of water, power and the other resources they provide, both directly and indirectly, to the human and wildlife populations that they support.  相似文献
