The central dogma of female reproductive biology has long held that oogenesis ceases prior to birth in mammals. During the first half of the last century, there was much debate about whether this was the case or whether oogenesis continued in the postnatal ovary. A report in 1951 effectively put an end to this debate and laid the foundation for the dogma. A new paper by Johnson et al. (2004) resurrects the debate over whether postnatal oogenesis occurs in the mammalian ovary. If confirmed, this would have tremendous impact on issues related to female fertility and reproductive longevity.  相似文献

Common empirical models of stomatal conductivity often incorporate a sensitivity of stomata to the rate of leaf photosynthesis. Such a sensitivity has been predicted on theoretical terms by Cowan and Farquhar, who postulated that stomata should adjust dynamically to maximize photosynthesis for a given water loss.
In this study, we implemented the Cowan and Farquhar hypothesis of optimal stomatal conductivity into a canopy gas exchange model, and predicted the diurnal and daily variability of transpiration for a savanna site in the wet–dry tropics of northern Australia. The predicted transpiration dynamics were then compared with observations at the site using the eddy covariance technique. The observations were also used to evaluate two alternative approaches: constant conductivity and a tuned empirical model.
The model based on the optimal water-use hypothesis performed better than the one based on constant stomatal conductivity, and at least as well as the tuned empirical model. This suggests that the optimal water-use hypothesis is useful for modelling canopy gas exchange, and that it can reduce the need for model parameterization.  相似文献

Germ line cells become gonocytes after the completion of migration and colonization of gonadal anlages. After the contact with the somatic cells of genital ridges the reprogramming of gonocytes takes place. Upon entry the embryonic gonads germ cells undergo the most complete demethylation during germ line development, their chromatin tends to have an open conformation for a short period. This event promotes the susceptibility to meiosis-inducing factors signaling. The choice of the further path of gonocytes development just after the gonadal sex differentiation, mitotic arrest and meiotic entry are discussed. Analisis of the action mechanisms of meiosis-inducing and meiosis-preventing factors, especially retinoic acid and enzymes of its degradation and synthesis, was performed.  相似文献

“Air-seeding” is a proposed mechanism for the initiation of water stress embolism in dead plant cells. During air-seeding, external air is drawn into the lumen of a dead plant cell through a pore or crack in the cell wall. The resulting bubble may expand to fill the lumen, thus embolizing the cell. The data presented confirm that Sphagnum hyalocysts can embolize by air-seeding when the pressure difference across the air-water meniscus is given by ΔP = 0.3/D (derived from the capillary equation), where ΔP is the pressure difference across the meniscus (megapascal), and D is the diameter (micrometer) of the pore through which the air bubble enters.  相似文献

Brown recently proposed that the "good genes" that females pursuewhen choosing mates may be individual heterozygosity becausemore heterozygous mates sire offspring with higher fitness.Further, because heterozygosity might enhance developmentalstability, males with more heterozygosity are recognized bythe reduced fluctuating asymmetry (FA) of their bilaterallypaired traits. We used a point sample of 67 male red-winged blackbirds(Agelaius phoeniceus) to test two predictions of this hypothesis:(1) males with more heterozygosity have higher fitness, and(2) males with more heterozygosity have lower FA. We identified7 polymorphic loci from an initial screening of 16 enzymes;32 individuals were completely homozygous, and 35 individualswere heterozygous at at least 1 locus. Larger and older malesrealized higher mating success in this population, but neither sizenor age was related to heterozygosity. Heterozygous males werenot in better condition than homozygous males, nor were theyless infected by hematozoa, lice, or mites. Among 1-year oldmales, epaulet length did not differ between homozygotes andheterozygotes, but among older males, heterozygotes did havelonger epaulets. Homozygotes and heterozygotes did not differin their mean FA scores for nine individual characters. Althoughthe two groups of males did differ in composite FA, heterozygousmales were less symmetrical. Interestingly, this differencewas attributable to a single allele at the PGM-3 locus. Combinedwith previous results showing that FA was generally unrelatedto male health, viability, parental care, social dominance,or mating success, the present results indicate that Brown's hypothesisdoes not explain mate choice or male quality in this populationof red-winged blackbirds.  相似文献

According to the mate deprivation hypothesis of sexual coercion, males are more likely to use sexually coercive tactics if they are disadvantaged in gaining access to desirable mates. This hypothesis was tested in a sample of 156 young, heterosexual, mostly single men enrolled in a Canadian university. Differential access to mates was indexed by self-perceived mating success, self-reported sexual history, and relative earning potential. Sexual coercion was assessed using the Koss's sexual experiences survey. Results did not support the hypothesis: men who identified themselves as sexually coercive tended to have higher self-perceived mating success, had significantly more extensive sexual histories, and did not report lower relative earning potential. Coercive men reported a greater preference for partner variety and casual sex. Sexual strategy theory is used to propose two alternative models of sexual coercion.  相似文献

Synopsis We tested the hypothesis that anadromous salmonids are guided on their homeward migration by population-specific pheromones. Our findings do not support the hypothesis. Wild migrant Arctic charr,Salvelinus alpinus, from Ikarut River, Labrador were transferred and held in a tributary previously uninhabited by anadromous fish. None of the charr migrating up Ikarut River entered the tributary after fish were transferred. Similarly, migrant charr, which were caught in Ikarut River and released in the tributary below the captive fish, did not remain in the tributary. We re-evaluated the data which have been used to uphold the concept of pheromone attraction in salmonid migration and concluded that support for the hypothesis is unsubstantiated.  相似文献

Summary.  After a long period of frustration, many components of the mammalian plasma membrane redox system are now being identified at the molecular level. Some are apparently ubiquitous but are necessary only for a subset of electron donors or acceptors; some are present only in certain cell types; some appear to be associated with proton extrusion; some appear to be capable of superoxide production. The volume and variety of data now available have begun to allow the formulation of tentative models for the overall network of interactions of enzymes and substrates that together make up the plasma membrane redox system. Such a model is presented here. The structure discussed here is of the mammalian system, though parts of it may apply more or less accurately to fungal and plant cells too. Judging from the history of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, it may be hoped that the development of models of the whole system – even if they undergo substantial revision thereafter – will markedly accelerate the pace of research in plasma membrane redox, by providing a coherent basis for the design of future experiments. Oocytes and their companion somatic cells maintain a close association throughout oogenesis and this association is essential for normal oocyte and follicular development. This review summarizes current concepts of the role of the somatic cells in the regulation of mammalian oocyte growth, the maintenance of meiotic arrest, the induction of oocyte maturation, and the acquisition of full embryonic developmental competence during oocyte maturation in vitro. Gap junctions appear to mediate these regulatory processes. The regulatory interaction of oocytes and somatic cells, however, is not unidirectional; the oocyte participates in the proliferation, development, and function of the follicular somatic cells. The oocyte secretes factors that enable the cumulus cells to synthesize hyaluronic acid and undergo cumulus expansion in response to hormonal stimulation. In addition, the oocyte produces factors that promote the proliferation of granulosa cells. These interactions in vitro do not appear to require the mediation of gap junctions. The oocyte also promotes the differentiation of granulosa cells into functional cumulus cells, but this function of the oocyte appears to require the continued presence and close association of the oocyte and granulosa cells. Therefore, oocytes and follicular somatic cells are interdependent for development and function.  相似文献

We report a test of the hypothesis that the high frequency of cystic fibrosis (CF) in Caucasian populations is due to a fertility advantage in CF carriers. One hundred forty-three grandparent couples of Utah CF cases were compared with 20 replicate sets of matched control couples drawn from the Utah Genealogical Database. Ascertainment correction, which has not been applied in previous studies of CF carrier fertility, was applied to these data. Before ascertainment correction was applied, CF carriers appeared to manifest a significant fertility advantage over controls. After the correction formula was applied, this difference disappeared. Carriers and controls were also compared in terms of the length of intervals between births. Again, no significant differences were found. It was concluded that fertility differences are unlikely to account for the observed Caucasian CF gene frequency. Other mechanisms, particularly a past selective event or random genetic drift, are more likely to be responsible.  相似文献

The hydraulic limitation hypothesis proposes that (1) reduced growth in taller trees is caused by decreased photosynthesis resulting from a decrease in hydraulic conductance promoted by a longer root‐to‐leaf flow path, and (2) this mechanism reduces stand productivity after canopy closure. This hypothesis was tested by comparing the physiology of 7 m (1 year) and 26 m (5 year) Eucalyptus saligna plantations where above‐ground productivity for the 26 m trees was approximately 69% of that for the 7 m trees, and water and nutrients were not limiting. The study compared whole tree physiology [water flux (Ql), average crown conductance (GT), crown hydraulic conductance per unit leaf area (KL), carbon isotope discrimination (δ13C)] and leaf physiology under light saturation (leaf water potential at the canopy top (ΨLEAF), photosynthetic capacity (Amax), and photosynthesis (A) and stomatal conductance (gs). KL was 50% lower in the taller trees, but whole tree Ql and GT were the same for the 7 m and 26 m trees. Photosynthetic capacity was the same for leaves at the canopy top, but δ13C was ?1.8‰ lower for the 26 m trees. A and gs were either lower in the taller trees or equal, depending on sampling date. The taller trees maintained 0.8 MPa lower ΨLEAF during the day and had 2.6‐times higher sapwood area per unit leaf area; these factors compensated for the effects of increased height and gravitational potential in the taller trees to maintain higher GT. The hydraulic limitation hypothesis (as originally stated) failed to explain the sharp decline in net primary productivity after canopy closure in this study. The effects of increased height appear to be a universal hydraulic problem for trees, but compensation mitigated these effects and maintained Ql and GT in the present study. Compensation may induce other problems (such as lower ΨLEAF or higher respiratory costs) that could reduce carbon gain or shift carbon allocation, and future studies of hydraulic limitation should consider compensation and associated carbon costs. In this study, the combination of similar GT and lower δ13C for the 26 m trees suggests that total crown photosynthesis was lower for the 26 m trees, perhaps a result of the lower ΨLEAF.  相似文献

The objective of this article is to develop a hypothesis-testing procedure to determine whether a common source outbreak has ended. We consider the case when neither the calendar date of exposure to the pathogen nor the exact incubation period distribution is known. The hypothesis-testing procedure is based on the spacings between ordered calendar dates of disease onset of the cases. A simulation study was performed to evaluate the robustness of the methods to various models for the incubation period of infectious diseases. We investigated the impact of multiple testing on the overall outbreak-wise type I error probability. We derive expressions for the outbreak-wise type I error probability and show that multiple testing has minimal effect on inflating that error probability. The results are discussed in the context of the 2001 U.S. anthrax outbreak.  相似文献

In order to test whether particular female sterile mutations block functions which normally occur in somatic or germ line derivatives, clones homozygous for each mutation were X-ray induced in heterozygous females. Using the germ line-dependent egg marker, fs(1)K10, it was possible to identify the eggs derived from clones which had been induced in the germ line. Mutations were classified as germ line dependent when these eggs also showed the phenotype associated with the female sterile mutation. Two mutations which caused early abnormalities in oogenesis (fs(1)116, fs(1)1304) were shown to affect germ cells, whereas two mutations which caused egg retention (fs(1)462, fs(1)1001) were somatically dependent. A mutation altering egg dimensions without affecting egg volume (short egg) was also shown to depend on somatic cells in the ovary. With one exception (fs(1)K4), mutations which caused production of fragile, collapsed eggs (fs(1)180, fs(1)473, fs(1)384, and fs(1)1163) were somatically dependent. Patches of mutant fs(1)384 morphology were found in the chorions of the eggs not derived from germ line clones. These patches are interpreted as being caused by homozygous clones in the somatically derived follicle cell epithelium and suggest that fs(1)384 affects processes occurring in these cells during the synthesis of the egg coverings.  相似文献

Child mortality experiences may affect subsequent fertility of couples by exerting a physiological effect, influencing length of birth, interval, or a replacement effect, in which couples continue to procreate in an attempt to reach a desired number of surviving offspring. Where biological constraints are potentially important, however, it may be difficult to distinguish between purely physiological and purely behavioral components of the process regulating production. Natural spacing of births and onset of sterility may be affected by health and diet and prior childbearing and breastfeeding practices. Biological pressures can, in turn, be infuenced behaviorally both by social custom and individual choice. Studies of 126 families in 19th century Massachusetts show that reduction in infant mortality is not a prerequisite for onset of family limitation. Results for the study population did not exhibit a relationship between parity progression ratios and the experience of child mortality, consisten with the child replacement hypothesis. 1 factor involved may be the parent's expectations of more than the desired number of children because of imperfect contraceptive technology at the time. Preference for the sex of children also may weaken overall replacement effect, since the death of a child of "undesired" sex will not be replaced. The cohort age-specific fertility patterns indicate that a reduction in overall fertility level in the communities studied was parity-dependent and directed at stopping childbearing at some given range of family size. At any rate, parents are not passive participants in a natural regime of births and deaths. While child replacement may be present in some societies, it is relatively inefficient and perhaps infrequent.  相似文献
