Laboratory populations of cloned Daphnia magna were exposed at different population phases (growing phase, density peak, stable phase) to the insecticide carbaryl at 15 μg 1−1, which was harmful to juveniles but not to adults, and their population dynamics were analyzed. The population declined most at the density peak, when not only juveniles but also many adult individuals died. To analyze the factors affecting population vulnerability to carbaryl, acute toxicity tests were conducted using Daphnia individuals of different body sizes under different food conditions. The test revealed that daphnid sensitivity to carbaryl increased greatly when food density was changed from a high food level to a low level. This food condition, of low availability, might be the condition to which the Daphnia populations were exposed at their density peak. The synergism of the negative impacts of anthropogenic and natural stresses such as insecticides and food shortage may control aquatic populations.  相似文献

1. Amphibian populations residing in or near agricultural areas are often susceptible to pesticide contamination. Recent evidence suggests that the effects of pesticides on amphibians often exceed those estimated in laboratory toxicity tests because other environmental factors (e.g. predators, resource abundance) can influence pesticide toxicity. 2. To examine the effects of an insecticide (carbaryl) on two species of Ambystoma salamanders experiencing the natural stress of competition, we manipulated chemical concentration (control, 3.5 and 7.0 mg L?1) and larval density (low and high). We determined the effect of treatments on snout‐vent length (SVL), growth rate, lipid reserves, time to metamorphosis, per cent survival and per cent metamorphosis. 3. Carbaryl negatively affected all response variables of Ambystoma maculatum significantly, and significantly reduced survival and metamorphosis of A. opacum. Increased density significantly influenced SVL, lipid reserves, growth rate and metamorphosis of A. maculatum. 4. The effects of carbaryl and increased density on per cent metamorphosis were nearly additive, but were generally less than additive on other variables. 5. The negative effects of chemical contamination on salamanders were likely because of pesticide‐induced reductions of food resources, as zooplankton abundance decreased by as much as 97% following carbaryl application. 6. Our study demonstrates the importance of the interactive effects that chemical contamination and natural environmental factors have on salamanders.  相似文献

1. We offered Scenedesmus obliquus in five densities, from 0.5 to 8 ± 106 cells ml?1, to the rotifer Anuraeopsis fissa. Growth rates (r) during the exponential phase (first 7 days) were significantly and positively related to food density. The r values (mean ± SD) varied between 0.454 ± 0.067 and 0,856 ± 0.090, from the lowest to the highest food concentration, respectively. Population growth went through a phase of exponential increase which lasted from 7 to 10 days before a plateau and, in some cases, a decrease occurred. 2. There was a linear relation between food density and rotifer plateau density. At the highest food density, a peak abundance (mean ± SD) of 2312 ± 226 individuals ml?1 was reached, while at the lowest food density there was no identifiable single peak but a plateau, at a density of 361 ± 62 ind. ml?1. 3. The egg ratio decreased with increasing population density. The ratio of loose eggs to eggs attached to females indicated that more eggs became detached at higher food densities. 4. As in many other rotifer species studied so far, population density of A. fissa was less stable at higher algal food concentrations. Numerically, A. fissa could be grown at twice the density achieved in Brachionus.  相似文献

Density-dependent regulation of natural and laboratory rotifer populations   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Density-dependent regulation of abundance is fundamentally important in the dynamics of most animal populations. Density effects, however, have rarely been quantified in natural populations, so population models typically have a large uncertainty in their predictions. We used models generated from time series analysis to explore the form and strength of density-dependence in several natural rotifer populations. Population growth rate (r) decreased linearly or non-linearly with increased population density, depending on the rotifer species. Density effects in natural populations reduced r to 0 at densities of 1–10 l–1 for 8 of the 9 rotifer species investigated. The sensitivities of these species to density effects appeared normally distributed, with a mean r=0 density of 2.3 l–1 and a standard deviation of 1.9. Brachionus rotundiformis was the outlier with 10–100× higher density tolerance. Density effects in laboratory rotifer populations reduced r to 0 at population densities of 10–100 ml–1, which is 104 higher than densities in natural populations. Density effects in laboratory populations are due to food limitation, autotoxicity or to their combined effects. Experiments with B. rotundiformis demonstrated the absence of autotoxicity at densities as high as 865 ml–1, a much higher density than observed in natural populations. It is, therefore, likely that food limitation rather than autotoxicity plays a major role in regulating natural rotifer populations.  相似文献

Wild horses (Equus caballus) are a non‐native species occupying over 2800 km2 of the nationally significant Australian Alps National Parks. We estimated key demographic parameters (fecundity, adult and juvenile survival and annual finite population growth rate) over 3 years and related these to horse body condition and available food for three populations under natural conditions, and found a trend consistent with food limitation. The populations were independent, with different site characteristics and occupied areas, identified by land managers, as areas of concern about possible conservation impacts. Annual fecundity and juvenile survival varied across sites averaging between 0.21 and 0.31 female young per adult female, and 0.83 and 0.90 per annum, respectively, and annual adult survival was consistent across sites averaging 0.91 per annum. One population was increasing (λ = 1.09 year?1; 95% CI 1.04–1.14) and two populations were stable (λ ~ 1.0 year?1). Mean body condition of horses was positively correlated with mean pasture biomass rank. Across the three populations, fecundity, recruitment, body condition and annual finite population growth rate were lowest when mean pasture biomass rank was lowest and conversely highest when pasture rank was highest. We conclude that food limitation appears to be operating across these three sites. We used our results to assess the sensitivity of annual finite rate of increase (λ) to changes in key demographic parameters and found that λ was most sensitive to a change in adult survival, with the second most sensitive parameter being fecundity. Thus, if the aim of management is to reduce the size of the wild horse population then targeting adult survival is most important, followed by fecundity. Finally, we estimated the linear, negative, numerical response for wild horses between annual λ and horses per unit pasture biomass.  相似文献

We studied colour morph diversity and frequencies of light and dark morphs in non-fluctuating and fluctuating populations of willow feeding leaf beetle Chrysomela lapponica in the Kola Peninsula, NW Russia. Population-specific Shannon–Weaver diversity index positively correlated with dark morph frequencies, indicating that the larger part of colour polymorphism is related with numbers and diversity of dark morphs. Among-population variation in studied characters was not explained by pollution load or predation rates, but depended on the type of the population and the stage of density change in the fluctuating populations: both colour morph diversity and frequency of dark morphs were low in declining post-outbreak populations but equally high in non-fluctuating populations and in fluctuating populations at peak densities. In time-series, both diversity index and frequency of dark morphs decreased with post-outbreak density decline in the fluctuating population, but did not change in the non-fluctuating population. In the experiment, when adults received low quality food (plants from post-outbreak site), mortality of dark morphs during the hibernation was almost doubled relative to the mortality of light morphs, whereas on high quality food the colour morphs demonstrated similar mortality. This may indicate, that decrease in colour polymorphism extent and dark morph frequencies in the declining populations is due to selective mortality of dark morphs imposed by density dependent (induced by heavy herbivore damage during an outbreak) decrease in host-plant quality (delayed inducible resistance, DIR). DIR is known as one of the factors driving herbivore populations, but our result is the first evidence that DIR may act as a factor of natural selection. Dark morphs are not only susceptible to low food quality, but also have smaller size compared to light morphs, and therefore the dark females are presumably less fecund. Thus, decrease in frequency of low-fitness (dark) individuals in post-outbreak populations and accumulation of low-fitness phenotypes at the popu-lation peak may create feedbacks contributing to regulation of density fluctuations in Ch. lapponica.  相似文献

The abundant centre hypothesis (ACH) assumes that population abundance, population size, density and per‐capita reproductive output should peak at the centre of a species' geographic range and decline towards the periphery. Increased isolation among and decreased reproductive output within edge populations should reduce within‐population genetic diversity and increase genetic differentiation among edge relative to central populations. The ACH also predicts asymmetrical gene flow, with net movement of migrants from the centre to edges. We evaluated these ecological assumptions and population‐genetic predictions in the endemic flowering plant Leavenworthia stylosa. Although populations were more spatially isolated near range edges, the geographic centre was surrounded by and not coincident with areas of peak population abundance, and plant density increased towards range edges. Per‐capita seed number was not associated with distance to the range centre, but seed number/m2 increased near range edges. In support of ACH predictions, allelic diversity at 12 microsatellite loci declined with distance from the range centre, and pairwise FST values were higher between edge populations than between central populations. Coalescent analyses confirmed that gene flow was most infrequent between edge populations, but there was not an asymmetric pattern of gene flow predicted by the ACH. This study shows that among‐population demographic variability largely did not support the ACH, while patterns of genetic diversity, differentiation and gene flow were generally consistent with its predictions. Such mixed support has frequently been observed in tests of the ACH and raises concerns regarding the generality of this hypothesis for species range limits.  相似文献

Methyl parathion is a commonly used insecticide in Mexico to eradicate insect pests. We evaluated the effects of this insecticide on rotifer B. angularis using both acute and chronic toxicity tests. Median lethal concentration (LC50) of methyl parathion for B. angularis for a 24-h bioassay in the presence and absence of an algal diet was derived. Elevated LC50 due to the survival of a greater number of test individuals in the presence of food was observed. Regardless of the toxicant concentration, population growth curves of the animals maintained at the low food level (0.75×106 cells ml-1) had a longer lag phase than those at the high food level (1.5×106 cells ml-1). Regardless of food level, an increase in the toxicant concentration in the medium resulted in decreased population growth. The lowest peak population density (50 ind. ml-1) was observed at the highest toxicant concentration and the lower food level. The highest population density (200 ind. ml-1) was observed in the controls at high food level. The rates of population increase per day (r) in the controls were higher (from 0.14 to 0.37 depending on the food level). Irrespective of food level, there was a decrease in the r values with increasing pesticide concentration in the medium. In order to detect the effect of population density on the growth rates in relation to the toxicant stress, we plotted the daily growth rate against initial density for the entire duration of the experiment. We observed the existence of a significantly inverse relation at all treatments except at the low food level and high toxicant concentrations (0.625 and 1.25 mg l-1). We discuss the role of algae in the toxicity of methyl parathion to zooplankton.  相似文献

Home range size generally decreases with increasing population density, but testing how this relationship is influenced by other factors (e.g., food availability, kin structure) is a difficult task. We used spatially explicit capture–recapture models to examine how home range size varies with population density in the yellow‐necked mouse (Apodemus flavicollis). The relationship between population density and home range size was studied at two distinct phases of population fluctuations induced by beech (Fagus sylvatica) masting: post‐mast peak in abundance (first summer after mast, n = 2) and subsequent crash (second summer after mast, n = 2). We live‐trapped mice from June to September to avoid the confounding effects of autumn seedfall on home range size. In accordance with general predictions, we found that home range size was negatively associated with population density. However, after controlling for the effect of density, home ranges of mice were larger in post‐mast years than during the crash phase. This indicates a higher spatial overlap among neighbors in post‐mast years. We suggest that the increased spatial overlap is caused by negative density‐dependent dispersal that leads to high relatedness of individuals within population in the peak phase of the cycle.  相似文献

1. The relative importance of density‐dependent and density‐independent processes in explaining fluctuations in natural populations has been widely debated. In particular, the importance of larval supply and whether it may control the type of regulatory processes a population experiences has proved contentious. 2. Using surveys and field experiments conducted in streams in Canterbury, New Zealand, we investigated how variation in the survival of non‐migratory Galaxias vulgaris fry was affected by density‐dependent and density‐independent processes and how this variation influenced recruitment dynamics. 3. Fry populations with high settlement densities experienced a 70–80% reduction in population size from density‐related mortality during the first fourteen days after peak settlement but thereafter the influence of density‐dependent processes on fry was weak. The impact of environmental conditions on fry populations was dependent on fry size and the magnitude of the perturbation, such that flooding effects on fry survival were most severe when fry were small. 4. In streams not affected by flooding, the size and density of introduced trout (Salmo trutta and Oncorhynchus mykiss) were the most significant factors determining the abundance of eventual recruits. A field experiment manipulating brown trout access to fry populations revealed that trout as small as 110 mm may be capable of greatly reducing and possibly preventing galaxiid recruitment. 5. Overall, the results indicated density‐dependent population regulation was only possible at sites with high native fish densities because trout were likely to be suppressing the number of potential recruits at sites with low native fish numbers. Whilst density‐dependent processes had a strong effect on fry survival following the period of peak fry abundance, density‐independent processes associated with flow and predatory trout influences on fry survival largely determined recruitment variability among galaxiid populations. Focusing conservation efforts on improving habitat to increase fry retention and reducing the impacts of trout on galaxiids would ensure more native fish populations reached their potential abundance.  相似文献

We investigated how density‐dependent processes and subsequent variation in nutritional condition of individuals influenced both timing and duration of sexual segregation and selection of resources. During 1999–2001, we experimentally created two population densities of North American elk (Cervus elaphus), a high‐density population at 20 elk/km2, and a low‐density population at 4 elk/km2 to test hypotheses relative to timing and duration of sexual segregation and variation in selection of resources. We used multi‐response permutation procedures to investigate patterns of sexual segregation, and resource selection functions to document differences in selection of resources by individuals in high‐ and low‐density populations during sexual segregation and aggregation. The duration of sexual segregation was 2 months longer in the high‐density population and likely was influenced by individuals in poorer nutritional condition, which corresponded with later conception and parturition, than at low density. Males and females in the high‐density population overlapped in selection of resources to a greater extent than in the low‐density population, probably resulting from density‐dependent effects of increased intraspecific competition and lower availability of resources.  相似文献

1. The combined effect of the insecticide carbaryl and the predator (Leptodora kindtii) kairomone was assessed on the development of protuberant morphology in the small cladoceran Bosmina fatalis, a feature which evolved originally as a response to the kairomone. The experiment showed that Bosmina changed its morphology in response to the kairomone, but development was inhibited by carbaryl at a sub‐lethal concentration even in the presence of the kairomone. At the same time, reduction of fecundity was observed in animals exposed to carbaryl. 2. A short‐term feeding experiment (B. fatalis versus Leptodora) indicated that such low concentrations of the insecticide had no impact on predation by Leptodora. Thus, it is suggested that the inhibition of development of anti‐predatory defences in Bosmina can increase its vulnerability to predation. 3. Such disturbance of chemical communication by the insecticide reduces the individual survival rate of prey Bosmina in the environment with high predator density. On the other hand, reduction of fecundity may result in decreased population growth rate of animals. 4. The impact of the insecticide on the anti‐predator morphology in Bosmina (inhibition) was opposite to that in Daphnia (enhancement). This suggests that biochemical induction processes in the development of anti‐predatory morphology are evolutionally different between Daphnia and Bosmina.  相似文献

We used isodars to analyse habitat‐dependent population regulation by long‐nosed bandicoots Perameles nasuta during an irruption and subsequent population crash in three habitats (heath, woodland and forest) at Booderee National Park, south‐eastern Australia. Specifically, we aimed to see whether patterns of habitat‐dependent population regulation matched a priori estimates of quantitative and qualitative differences between habitats. We also tested if habitat preference changed between the increasing and decreasing phase of the irruption as predicted by the reciprocating dispersal theory. Quantitative differences in habitat quality were indexed by the relative abundance of the main food of long‐nosed bandicoots (terrestrial invertebrates), while qualitative differences were indexed by the availability of refuge from predation (vegetation understorey density). One index of fitness, body weight, was highest in forest, and lowest in heath, suggesting an ideal despotic model of habitat selection. Over the entire course of the irruption, there was density‐dependent habitat selection with forest and woodland both quantitatively superior to heath. This reflected the overall abundance of invertebrates with highest abundance in woodland and forest and less in heath. Isodar analysis also revealed that although forest was quantitatively better than heath and equivalent to woodland it was qualitatively poorer than either habitat. Heath had a higher density of understorey than woodland and woodland having a higher density of understorey than forest giving crossover population regulation. When the increasing and declining phase of the irruption were analysed separately, no habitat was quantitatively superior to any other during either phase. The lack of switching in preference between habitats from the increasing to the declining phase of the irruption and the virtual absence of any dispersal by adults, does not support the reciprocating dispersal hypothesis.  相似文献

Seasonal variation in density, thallus length and biomass, population size structure, and allometric length‐biomass relationships was investigated in populations of Sargassum ilicifolium (Turner) C. Agardh, Sargassum subrepandum (Forssk.) C. Agardh, and Turbinaria triquetra (J. Agardh) Kütz. (Phaeophyceae) on shallow reef flats in the southern Red Sea. Thallus length and biomass varied strongly with season, with the highest values occurring in the cooler months. Thallus densities showed no significant temporal variation. Log‐total biomass versus log‐density relationships were positive throughout the growth season without any decrease in the slope of the relationship. In two populations, biomass‐density combinations approached the interspecific biomass‐density line, but the massive annual shedding of modules occurred before self‐thinning would set in. Allometric length‐biomass relationships varied with season in all populations and were associated with seasonal module initiation, growth, and shedding. Evidence of a strong asymmetric competition was found in two high‐density populations. These populations showed a predominance of small thalli during peak development, asymmetrical Lorenz curves, increasing Gini coefficients, and increasing thallus length relative to biomass during the main growth phase. In two other less crowded populations, small thalli were absent during peak development, Lorenz curves were symmetrical, and Gini coefficients decreased during the main growth phase. In these populations, size equalization appears to be due to responses at the modular level rather than size‐dependent mortality. We conclude that changes in size structure in this highly seasonal environment are determined by module dynamics, modified by asymmetric competition in some populations, with a minor role of recruitment and no regulatory effect of self‐thinning.

Five-year-studies of two wood mouse populations (Apodemus sylvaticus L.) were carried out outside the village Vík. S. Iceland, and in a birch forest close to the lake Mývatn, N. Iceland. The population at Vík was studied on a 1.10 ha grid on a slope covered with Angelica archangelica L., the seeds of which constituted a major food resource for the mice. Altogether 948 individuals were caught, marked and followed during 1973–1978. No other free-living small mammals occur in Iceland, and predator pressure is low and considered non-existent on the Angelica slope. The population density was extremely high; highest autumn density recorded was 150 ind ha?1. Like other Apodemus populations, the one at Vík showed a typical seasonal pattern in numbers: a winter decrease, relatively stable numbers in late summer, and an autumn peak. Breeding started in late April or early May and ended in late September; no winter breeding was observed. Three or four litters were produced, and the last litter(s) of the season greatly contributed to the autumn increase. The output of young per reproductive female throughout the year was negatively correlated with spring density, and autumn peak density with the number of females in August. Also overwinter success and weight changes appeared to be associated with population density (and weather). Survival rates did not vary much between years and seasons and were consistently rather high. Autumn survival of juveniles was positively correlated with mean minimum temperatures. Juvenile survival was, at least at times, negatively affected by the presence of adult males. Trapping outside the main grid did not indicate any marked dispersal, though some immigration to the grid must have occurred, especially in spring and early summer. Among the factors governing the population density and dynamics of wood mouse at Vík we emphasize the absence of interspecific competition and predation, the rich and dependable food resources (mainly Angelica seeds), the mild (though moist and windy) climate, the shelter of dense Angelica stands, the abundance of crevices (e.g. nest-sites), and the social interactions. The birch forest in northern Iceland was low productive and the wood mouse population differed from the Vík population by exhibiting low density, short breeding season, and high vagility; characteristics we consider to be representative for most Apodemus populations in Iceland.  相似文献

Density is known to be an important factor in population size regulation. Several mechanisms of density limitation have been identified in colonial birds. We studied competition in Common Terns Sterna hirundo to assess whether the factor limiting reproductive output was competition for nest‐sites, which is dependent on local nest density, or density‐dependent competition for food resources, which is dependent on overall colony size using the same foraging area. We found strong associations of both colony size and nest density with reproductive output in five colonies of Common Terns in three different habitats (one marine, two freshwater). Based on detailed long‐term datasets of six separate sub‐colonies of the Banter See colony that differed in nest density, we found that reproductive success was not related to nest density but to overall colony size, possibly a result of resource depletion and food competition. We also found carry‐over effects of colony size during rearing on post‐fledging return rate. These results have important implications for the conservation management plans aimed at recovering declining populations of Common Terns.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Field and laboratory investigations were combined in a 2‐year study on the initiation of a midsummer decline of Daphnia galeata Sars in a hypertrophic reservoir. Quantitative field samples were taken twice a week, and, adult and juvenile mortality rates were calculated. Patterns of reproduction and survival of daphnids born during spring and early summer under fluctuating food conditions were determined in life‐table experiments. 2. The abundance of Daphnia increased strongly in early May and declined in June 1998 (midsummer decline). In 1999, Daphnia density increased only slowly in spring and remained constantly high throughout the summer. 3. Food conditions (concentrations of POC<30 μm) for daphnids deteriorated in both years in response to increasing Daphnia densities, resulting in a clear‐water phase of about 4 weeks. When Daphnia abundance declined in 1998, POC<30 μm concentrations increased greatly, whereas in 1999 food conditions improved only slightly and Secchi depth remained high. 4. Survival of daphnids in life‐table experiments decreased greatly after food became rare and was strongly reduced in those animals born during the clear‐water phase compared with those born later. In addition, age at first reproduction was retarded during the clear‐water phase, resulting in very low population growth rates. Survivorship patterns in life‐table experiments suggest a strong impact of non‐consumptive mortality on Daphnia population dynamics. 5. Field data of mortality point to differences in mortality patterns between years, probably resulting from different predation impacts of juvenile fish. In both years, however, adult mortality contributed substantially to overall mortality at the end of the clear‐water phase. As bottom‐up effects on D. galeata were very similar in both years, the significance of non‐consumptive mortality on the initiation of midsummer declines appears to depend largely on recruitment patterns before the clear‐water phase. A high impact can be expected when Daphnia populations are dominated by a peak cohort of nearly identical age during the clear‐water phase.  相似文献

Estimates of density and population size are fundamental in assessing population trends and ultimately in informing conservation management. Although the abundance of raptors is often expressed as indices of relative abundance, these can be poor correlates of absolute density. In 2008–2009, I calculated the absolute density and population size of Gray‐backed Hawks (Pseudastur occidentalis), an endangered species and Tumbesian endemic, using line transect counts in four different habitat types in a protected area in northwestern Peru. The absolute density of Gray‐backed Hawks in northwest Peru was estimated to be 0.65 individuals km?2, and the most suitable habitat for the species was located in the provinces of Manabí, Guayas, and Santa Elena in Ecuador, and Tumbes and Piura departments in Peru. The population of Gray‐backed Hawks in my study areas in Tumbes was estimated to be 136, with 94% occurring in dry deciduous and deciduous forest. Because ~60% of all detections in my study were made outside strictly protected areas, including the recently created Angostura‐Faical Regional Conservation Area, conservation of the remaining, non‐protected forests patches in Peru and Ecuador should be a high priority. The current global population of Gray‐backed Hawks has been estimated to be between 250 and 999 birds and declining due to ongoing habitat destruction and fragmentation. Small populations in small habitat fragments, like those in my study area, have high conservation potential, provided that populations are not isolated, and hence should be the focus of constant monitoring.  相似文献

Within harvested populations, relationships between harvest intensity and reproductive responses are typically unclear, rendering regulatory decisions difficult. Harvest of the commercially important shovelnose sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus platorynchus) is increasing in the upper Mississippi River; standardized seasonal sampling revealed that adult abundance is declining. Relative density of annual cohorts varied negatively with historical harvest intensity (r2 = 0.84), suggesting that removal of mature adults is reducing the contribution of cohorts to population density. The results of simulation modeling suggest that this currently unregulated fishery is experiencing both growth and recruitment overfishing. Further, the current proposed multi‐state minimum length regulation was insufficient to maintain a sustainable stock. Only a more conservative minimum length limit (685 mm) produced yields that were sustainable at the current level of mortality and provided room for the fishery to grow. The annual mortality rate of the sympatric, federally endangered pallid sturgeon (S. albus) was similar to that of the shovelnose sturgeon population, raising concerns that harvest‐induced mortality is affecting this congener's vital rates.  相似文献
