An ecological-faunistic analysis of mosquitoes has been carried out in the Strezhevoy town (Tomsk Region). Thirty-one species of mosquitoes have been recorded in the territory examined. The population peak of mosquitoes is recorded in the 1-2 ten-days of July. Characteristics of the biotopic distribution and daily activity of the dominant mosquito species are revealed. Limiting factors of daily activity of mosquitoes in the investigated territory are characterized.  相似文献

In Plasmodium-infected mosquitoes, oocysts are preferentially located at the posterior half of the posterior midgut. Because mosquitoes rest vertically after feeding, the effect of gravity on the ingested blood has been proposed as the cause of such a biased distribution. In this paper, we examined the oocyst distribution on the midguts of mosquitoes that were continuously rotated to nullify the effect of gravity and found that the typical pattern of oocyst distribution did not change. Invasion of the midgut epithelium by ookinetes was similarly found to be biased toward the posterior part of the posterior midgut. We examined whether the distribution of oocysts depends on the distribution of vesicular ATPase (V-ATPase)-overexpressing cells that Plasmodium ookinetes preferentially use to cross the midgut epithelium. An antiserum raised against recombinant Aedes aegypti V-ATPase B subunit indicated that the majority of V-ATPase-overexpressing cells in Ae. aegypti and Anopheles gambiae are localized at the posterior part of the posterior midgut. We propose that the typical distribution of oocysts on the mosquito midgut is attributable to the presence and the spatial distribution of the V-ATPase-overexpressing cells in the midgut epithelium.  相似文献

Two actin genes cloned from Culex pipiens L. are upregulated during adult diapause. Though actins 1 and 2 were expressed throughout diapause, both genes were most highly expressed early in diapause. These changes in gene expression were accompanied by a conspicuous redistribution of polymerized actin that was most pronounced in the midguts of diapausing mosquitoes that were exposed to low temperature. In nondiapausing mosquitoes reared at 25 degrees C and in diapausing mosquitoes reared at 18 degrees C, polymerized actin was clustered at high concentrations at the intersections of the muscle fibers that form the midgut musculature. When adults 7-10 days post-eclosion were exposed to low temperature (-5 degrees C for 12 h), the polymerized actin was evenly distributed along the muscle fibers in both nondiapausing and diapausing mosquitoes. Exposure of older adults (1 month post-eclosion) to low temperature (-5 degrees C for 12 h) elicited an even greater distribution of polymerized actin, an effect that was especially pronounced in diapausing mosquitoes. These changes in gene expression and actin distribution suggest a role for actins in enhancing survival of diapausing adults during the low temperatures of winter by fortification of the cytoskeleton.  相似文献

Background

Mosquitoes commute between blood-meal hosts and water. Thus, heterogeneity in human biting reflects underlying spatial heterogeneity in the distribution and suitability of larval habitat as well as inherent differences in the attractiveness, suitability and distribution of blood-meal hosts. One of the possible strategies of malaria control is to identify local vector species and then attack water bodies that contain their larvae.

Methods

Biting and host seeking, not oviposition, have been the focus of most previous studies of mosquitoes and malaria transmission. This study presents a mathematical model that incorporates mosquito oviposition behaviour.

Results

The model demonstrates that oviposition is one potential factor explaining heterogeneous biting and vector distribution in a landscape with a heterogeneous distribution of larval habitat. Adult female mosquitoes tend to aggregate around places where they oviposit, thereby increasing the risk of malaria, regardless of the suitability of the habitat for larval development. Thus, a water body may be unsuitable for adult mosquito emergence, but simultaneously, be a source for human malaria.

Conclusion

Larval density may be a misleading indicator of a habitat's importance for malaria control. Even if mosquitoes could be lured to oviposit in sprayed larval habitats, this would not necessarily mitigate – and might aggravate – the risk of malaria transmission. Forcing mosquitoes to fly away from humans in search of larval habitat may be a more efficient way to reduce the risk of malaria than killing larvae. Thus, draining, fouling, or filling standing water where mosquitoes oviposit can be more effective than applying larvicide.  相似文献

The distributions of homeothermic mammals and birds in continental North America show a distinct pattern in the configuration of their geographical ranges. Smaller ranges tend to be elongated north-south while larger ranges tend to be elongated east-west. To examine the generality of this pattern in ectotherms, we analyzed the distribution on continental North America of 139 species of mosquitoes, 164 amphibians, and 221 reptiles. Unlike birds and mammals, small ranges of ectotherms were not elongated north-south and the small ranges of snakes were elongated east-west. The distribution of ectotherms with small ranges does not appear to be affected by the major topographic features of North America which tend to run north-south. Like birds and mammals, large ranges of mosquitoes and reptiles but not amphibians are elongated east-west. The east-west orientation of mosquitoes with large ranges is not attributable to the three largest genera in North America taken singly, Aedes, Culex, or Anopheles, but appears only when all genera are pooled. The east-west orientation of reptiles with large ranges is attributable to turtles and snakes but not lizards. Climatic zones may thus affect the distribution of mosquitoes, turtles, and snakes with large ranges but are not the major determinants of range dimensions among ectotherms in general. The risk of human infection with sylvatic chikungunya (CHIKV) virus was assessed in a focus of sylvatic arbovirus circulation in Senegal by investigating distribution and abundance of anthropophilic Aedes mosquitoes, as well as the abundance and distribution of CHIKV in these mosquitoes. A 1650 km(2) area was classified into five land cover classes: forest, barren, savanna, agriculture and village. A total of 39,799 mosquitoes was sampled from all classes using human landing collections between June 2009 and January 2010. Mosquito diversity was extremely high, and overall vector abundance peaked at the start of the rainy season. CHIKV was detected in 42 mosquito pools. Our data suggest that Aedes furcifer, which occurred abundantly in all land cover classes and landed frequently on humans in villages outside of houses, is probably the major bridge vector responsible for the spillover of sylvatic CHIKV to humans.  相似文献

The numbers of malarial oocysts developing in individual, like mosquitoes fed concurrently on a single vertebrate malarial host were found to be distributed according to the negative binomial distribution in 169 experiments utilizing 6 species of Plasmodium, 6 species of mosquitoes and 3 species of vertebrate hosts. Dispersion constants ranged upward to 8.0, and mean clump sizes ranged upward to 298.4. The dispersion constant was demonstrated to be contingent on the species, strain and identity of the mosquito, the parasite and the vertebrate host; on the genetic state of the mosquito; and on the state of the infection in the vertebrate host. It was concluded that the concentration of oocyst production in particular mosquitoes was produced by varying levels and combinations of numerous factors associated with the parasite, the mosquito and the vertebrate host and that the pattern of oocyst distribution favors parasite survival and the maintenance of malaria in the field.  相似文献

Zika virus(ZIKV) has been isolated from mosquitoes such as Aedes, Mansonia uniformis, and Culex perfuscus; However, the isolation of ZIKV from Anopheles sinensis and Culex tritaeniorhynchus has not yet been reported. In June and July2018, 22,985 mosquitoes and 57,500 midges were collected in Jiangxi Province in southeastern China. Among them, six strains of ZIKV were isolated from mosquitoes: four from An. sinensis and two from Cx. tritaeniorhynchus. Molecular genetic analysis showed that the ZIKV isolated from An. sinensis and Cx. tritaeniorhynchus belonged to genotype 2 in the Asian evolutionary branch of ZIKV. In addition, the ZIKV strains isolated from An. sinensis and Cx. tritaeniorhynchus had amino acid substitutions identical to ZIKV strains prevalent in South America since 2015. This study is the first to isolate ZIKV from mosquito specimens collected in the wild of Jiangxi Province, China; This is also the first time that ZIKV has been isolated from An. sinensis and Cx. tritaeniorhynchus. Given that An. sinensis and Cx. tritaeniorhynchus have a very wide geographical distribution in China and even in eastern and southern Asia, the isolation of several strains of ZIKV from these two mosquitoes poses new challenges for the prevention and control of ZIKV infection in the mainland of China and countries and regions with the same distribution of mosquitoes.  相似文献

Culex pipiens molestus has been distributed in Siberia and the Russian Far East since 80s of XX century. In early 90s, C. p. molestus reached South Yakutia (Nerungri city), and nowadays it occurs in South-West Yakutia (Lensk city). The number of breeding places with larvae and pupae of mosquitoes was not numerous in Lensk; among 56 examined houses, the places with larvae and pupae mosquitoes were registered in seven houses, while the adult mosquitoes occurred in the majority of the houses. The occurrence of larvae varied from 12.5 to 33.3%, occurrence of adults-from 12.5 to 100%. The coefficient of variation of larvae in the samples was equal to 0.92, and adults had the following coefficients: 0.84 in the houses without basement; 0.92 in the houses with dry basements; 1.05 in the houses with pools in basements. This data are referred to the casual type, it means that the distribution of mosquitoes in space is dispersed. Imago spread actively in stone house of Lensk that provides mosquitoes with new places of breeding, and supports the stability of population in new areas.  相似文献

Heterogeneity in the transmission of mosquito-borne pathogens is determined largely by distribution patterns of mosquito bites among wild animal populations. Although mosquitoes are crucial for transmission of avian malaria parasites, little is known about the ecology of natural vectors. We examined bloodmeal and parasite incidence in Culex pipiens pallens by a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based procedure to determine how the feeding pattern of mosquitoes govern transmission dynamics of avian malaria parasites in Japanese wild birds. We collected 881 unfed and 486 blood-fed Cx. pipiens pallens resting on vegetation in a park in Tokyo. The mosquitoes were separated into abdomen and thorax prior to PCR screening. Abdomens of unfed mosquitoes were combined into 95 pools. From these, we amplified Plasmodium DNA in 32 (33.7%) pools. Among blood-fed mosquitoes, 371 individuals were screened for blood-sources and Plasmodium parasites. Plasmodium DNA was amplified from mosquitoes fed on 6 of 13 avian species identified as blood-sources. Ten Plasmodium lineages were identified on the basis of 478 bp of the cytochrome b gene, with 0.2-10% sequence divergence. The three commonest Plasmodium lineages (CXPIP09, SGS1 and PADOM02) were detected in both the abdomens and thoraxes of mosquitoes, strongly suggesting transmission of these lineages. Jungle crow (Corvus macrorhynchos) served as a natural host for the three commonest Plasmodium lineages and made up 63.8% of blood-sources. As a significant increase in feeding of vector mosquitoes on jungle crows coincided with their breeding season, jungle crows were considered to be the primary reservoir of Plasmodium transmission in this study.  相似文献

Mosquito vectors play a crucial role in the distribution of avian Plasmodium parasites worldwide. At northern latitudes, where climate warming is most pronounced, there are questions about possible changes in the abundance and distribution of Plasmodium parasites, their vectors, and their impacts to avian hosts. To better understand the transmission of Plasmodium among local birds and to gather baseline data on potential vectors, we sampled a total of 3,909 mosquitoes from three locations in south‐central Alaska during the summer of 2016. We screened mosquitoes for the presence of Plasmodium parasites using molecular techniques and estimated Plasmodium infection rates per 1,000 mosquitoes using maximum likelihood methods. We found low estimated infection rates across all mosquitoes (1.28 per 1,000), with significantly higher rates in Culiseta mosquitoes (7.91 per 1,000) than in Aedes mosquitoes (0.57 per 1,000). We detected Plasmodium in a single head/thorax sample of Culiseta, indicating potential for transmission of these parasites by mosquitoes of this genus. Plasmodium parasite DNA isolated from mosquitoes showed a 100% identity match to the BT7 Plasmodium lineage that has been detected in numerous avian species worldwide. Additionally, microscopic analysis of blood smears collected from black‐capped chickadees (Poecile atricapillus) at the same locations revealed infection by parasites preliminarily identified as Plasmodium circumflexum. Results from our study provide the first information on Plasmodium infection rates in Alaskan mosquitoes and evidence that Culiseta species may play a role in the transmission and maintenance of Plasmodium parasites in this region.  相似文献

The distribution of the urban mosquitoes, Culex pipiens pipiens f. molestus in Petrozavodsk city was studied for the first time. Immature mosquito stages were found in 21 of 68 basements flooded with polluted waters, the occurrence of the mosquitoes varied in different districts of the sity. The mean siphonal index of the mosquito larvae from 6 underground populations varied from 3.8 up to 4.2, i. e. within the range typical for C. p. p. f. molestus.  相似文献

In Mauritania, several mosquito-borne viruses have been reported that can cause devastating diseases in animals and humans. However, monitoring data on their occurrence and local distribution are limited. Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is an arthropod-borne virus that causes major outbreaks throughout the African continent and the Arabian Peninsula. The first Rift Valley fever (RVF) epidemic in Mauritania occurred in 1987 and since then the country has been affected by recurrent outbreaks of the disease. To gain information on the occurrence of RVFV as well as other mosquito-borne viruses and their vectors in Mauritania, we collected and examined 4,950 mosquitoes, belonging to four genera and 14 species. The mosquitoes were captured during 2018 in the capital Nouakchott and in southern parts of Mauritania. Evidence of RVFV was found in a mosquito pool of female Anopheles pharoensis mosquitoes collected in December on a farm near the Senegal River. At that time, 37.5% of 16 tested Montbéliarde cattle on the farm showed RVFV-specific IgM antibodies. Additionally, we detected IgM antibodies in 10.7% of 28 indigenous cattle that had been sampled on the same farm one month earlier. To obtain information on potential RVFV reservoir hosts, blood meals of captured engorged mosquitoes were analyzed. The mosquitoes mainly fed on humans (urban areas) and cattle (rural areas), but also on small ruminants, donkeys, cats, dogs and straw-colored fruit bats. Results of this study demonstrate the circulation of RVFV in Mauritania and thus the need for further research to investigate the distribution of the virus and its vectors. Furthermore, factors that may contribute to its maintenance should be analyzed more closely. In addition, two mosquito pools containing Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes showed evidence of dengue virus (DENV) 2 circulation in the city of Rosso. Further studies are therefore needed to also examine DENV circulation in Mauritania.  相似文献

Analysis of landscape and zonal changes in the species diversity and abundance of 34 species of bloodsucking mosquitoes and 42 species of horseflies in the northeastern Russian Plain was carried out. The species diversity of both families is reduced from south to north. Two steps of faunistic depletion can be revealed: at the boundary of the middle and northern taiga (both mosquitoes and horseflies) and at the boundary of the extreme northern taiga and the forest-tundra (horseflies only). Species whose northern and southern distribution boundaries lie within the territory studied are listed.  相似文献

A common assumption about malaria, dengue, and other mosquito-borne infections is that the two main components of the risk of human infection—the rate at which people are bitten (human biting rate) and the proportion of mosquitoes that are infectious—are positively correlated. In fact, these two risk factors are generated by different processes and may be negatively correlated across space and time in heterogeneous environments. Uneven distribution of blood-meal hosts and larval habitat creates a spatial mosaic of demograPhic sources and sinks. Moreover, mosquito populations fluctuate temporally, forced by environmental variables such as rainfall, temperature, and humidity. These sources of spatial and temporal heterogeneity in the distribution of mosquito populations generate variability in the human biting rate, in the proportion of mosquitoes that are infectious, and in the risk of human infection. To understand how heterogeneity affects the epidemiology of mosquito-borne infections, we developed a set of simple models that incorporate heterogeneity in a stepwise fashion. These models predict that the human biting rate is highest shortly after the mosquito densities peak, near breeding sites where adult mosquitoes emerge, and around the edges of areas where humans are aggregated. In contrast, the proportion of mosquitoes that are infectious reflects the age structure of mosquito populations; it peaks where old mosquitoes are found, far from mosquito breeding habitat, and when mosquito population density is declining. Finally, we show that estimates for the average risk of infection that are based on the average entomological inoculation rate are strongly biased in heterogeneous environments.  相似文献

Mosquito collections with CDC light traps using dry ice and pigeon‐baited traps were carried out in south Moravia (Czech Republic) from April to October in 2007 and 2008 at two study sites. In 2007, 11 two‐day captures were carried out in two‐week intervals, and 1,490 female mosquitoes of nine species were caught. In 2008, 15 two‐day trappings of mosquitoes were carried out: 6,778 females of 22 species of mosquitoes were trapped. The results showed marked differences in abundance and species composition of mosquitoes between both study sites and between the trapping methods. In the floodplain forest ecosystem of the Soutok study area, Aedes vexans predominated. The species composition in the Nesyt study site was more varied and the most common species was Culex pipiens. At the latter study site, Anopheles hyrcanus (var. pseudopictus) and Uranotaenia unguiculata, mosquito species with largely southern Eurasian distribution, were repeatedly demonstrated. The largest capture of mosquitoes was in traps with CO2 placed at a height 1 m above the ground. The capture of mosquitoes in the pigeon‐baited traps as well as in the traps with CO2 placed in the canopy of trees was markedly lower in both study sites, with the predominant species being Culex pipiens.  相似文献
