Zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) are essential micronutrients involved in numerous metabolic reactions. They are also antagonists of the N-methyl-D-aspartate glutamate (NMDA) receptor in the central nervous system, which mediates mood, cognition, pain perception, and sleep. However, there have been few studies on the effects of Zn and Cu on sleep. A total of 126 adult women were recruited in this cross-sectional study. Zn and Cu levels in the serum and hair were measured for each subject. The participants completed the 7-day physical activity recall questionnaire and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. The mean hours of sleep were compared according to the tertiles of Zn, Cu, and Zn/Cu ratio in the serum and hair by analyses of covariance. The participants in the middle tertile of Zn and Zn/Cu ratio in the serum had significantly longer sleep duration compared to those in the lowest tertile (p?相似文献

The presence of ischaemic tissue excites an inflammatory reaction and synthesis of acute phase proteins (APhPs). Ceruloplasmin (Cp) protein binds 90% of the copper in plasma and it is one of the positive APhPs, and its concentration increases in infection, inflammation or necrosis. The study presents the relationship of the oxidase activity of Cp and concentrations of Cu and Zn in serum of men with different degrees of ischaemia of the lower limbs. The subjects were 32 men with chronic arterial occlusion (AO) of the lower limbs. The oxidase activity of Cp was measured in serum with o-dianisidine as a substrate. Concentrations of Cu and Zn were determined by using atomic absorption spectrometry. The mean activity of Cp in serum in AO (173 +/- 69.2 U/l) was higher as compared with the control group (123.7 +/- 28.6 U/l), and in men with critical ischaemia (> or = 194.8 U/l) than in men with a moderate level of ischaemia (109.3 +/- 31.6 U/l). The mean concentrations of Cu and Zn in serum were found to be higher in AO (22.2 +/- 4.2 and 19.1 +/- 6.9 mumol/l, respectively) than in the control group (16.3 +/- 1.8 and 15.2 +/- 2.3 mumol/l), and in men with critical ischaemia (> or = 22.2 and 19.1 mumol/l) than in men with a moderate level of ischaemia (18.5 +/- 3.3 and 14.5 +/- 4.3 mumol/l). Significant positive correlation coefficients were calculated for the activities of Cp and concentrations of Cu in the control group (r = 0.86) and the AO group (r = 0.76), and low, but significant, correlations for Cp and Zn in the AO group (r = 0.66). The increase in the oxidase activity of Cp and concentration of Cu in serum in ischaemia is caused by the acute phase response. The relationship of Zn concentration and Cp activity in ischaemia is indirect and needs further study.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between trace elements and the incidence of cervical cancer. Tissue and serum levels of six elements (Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, Ca, and Se) and the Cu/Zn ratio in 40 cases of patients with cervical cancer, 30 cases of uterine myoma, and 50 healthy subjects were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry; the selenium content was determined by atomic fluorescence spectrometry. The results showed that the tissue contents of Zn, Se, and Ca were significantly lower and the Cu and Fe concentrations and Cu/Zn ratio were significantly higher in cervical cancer tissue than that for paired nonlesion tissue (p<0.02 and p<0.001, respectively). The serum levels of Zn, Se, Ca, and Fe were lower and Cu and Mn levels and Cu/Zn ratio were higher in patients with cervical cancer than in healthy subjects (p<0.01 and p<0.001, respectively) and in the uterine myoma group compared with healthy subjects (p< 0.05–0.001). There are no significant differences in the contents of six elements and the Cu/Zn ratio between uterine myoma tissue and paired nonlesion tissue. The results showed also that the Fe level and Cu/Zn ratio were significantly higher and the Zn and Se levels were significantly lower in cervical cancer tissue than in uterine myoma tissue (p<0.01 and p<0.001, respectively). The serum Cu level and Cu/Zn ratio were significantly higher in the cervical cancer group than the uterine myoma group (p<0.01). Data were also analyzed using multivarate logistic regression. After adjustment for age, occupation, life habit, and other covariates for the development of cervical cancer, the odds ratios were 22.64 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 5.64–90.88, p=0.001) for Cu, 0.11 (95% CI: 0.034–0.373; p=0.005) for Zn, and 0.60 (95% CI: 0.36–0.99, p=0.01) for Se. Thus, the serum and tissue levels of Cu increase and the deficiency of Zn and Se may be risk factors for the development of cervical cancer.  相似文献

To investigate human exposure to bisphenol A (BPA), a widely used endocrine disruptor, we measured serum BPA concentrations and analyzed the interrelation of BPA with sex-related hormones. BPA was detected in all human sera by a novel enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Serum BPA concentrations were significantly higher in normal men (1.49 +/- 0.11 ng/ml; P < 0.01) and in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (1.04 +/- 0.10 ng/ml; P < 0.05) compared with normal women (0.64 +/- 0.10 ng/ml). There were significant positive correlations between serum BPA and total testosterone (r = 0.595, P < 0.001) and free testosterone (r = 0.609, P < 0.001) concentrations in all subjects and likewise between serum BPA and total testosterone (r = 0.559, P < 0.01) and free testosterone (r = 0.598, P < 0.001) concentrations in all female subjects, but not between serum BPA and other sex-related hormone concentrations in any group. These findings showed that there are gender differences in serum BPA concentrations, possibly due to differences in the androgen-related metabolism of BPA.  相似文献

Age-related differences in serum luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), salivary testosterone, and 17-beta estradiol levels are reported for Ache Amerindian males (n = 17; mean age, 37.1 +/- 14.2 SD) of Paraguay in order to explore population variation in patterns of male reproductive senescence in a foraging/agricultural community. Hormone associations were examined to test various hypotheses for age-related differences in hypothalamic-pituitary function. Significant increases in FSH (r = 0.75, P < 0.0005) and LH (r = 0.65, P < 0.01) were noted in association with aging. No significant correlation was observed between morning or evening testosterone and age. Morning and evening estradiol levels were associated with morning and evening testosterone, respectively (morning, r = 0.53, P = 0.05; evening, r = 0.63, P = 0.02). Evening estradiol was also positively associated with LH (r = 0.66, P = 0.02), suggesting testicular production to be an important source of circulating estradiol. Morning estradiol tended to rise with age, but was not significant (r = 0.39, P = 0.15). Anthropometric measurements of height, weight, body mass index, and fat percent did not change significantly with age. In contrast to testosterone, age-related differences in gonadotropin levels may be independent of energetic status, less variant, and more universal among male populations. Implications for gonadotropin function and aging on human male reproductive senescence and life histories are discussed.  相似文献

Total testosterone and dihydrotestosterone in blood serum as well as free testosterone in saliva were determined by radioimmunoassay in 110 healthy young men. The results were compared with the development of terminal hair on the trunk and limbs, with the disposition to balding and with the disposition to acne. No significant correlations were found between terminal hair development and absolute androgen levels; however, some significant values were observed in the case of the metabolic rate of dihydrotestosterone/testosterone and the proportion of free to total testosterone. The disposition to balding also correlates positively with the latter ratio. Yet the absolute serum androgen concentrations in men with a disposition to balding is lower than in men with no reduction of scalp hair. The widespread assumption that androgen levels are in general elevated in bald-trait men must therefore be rejected. In accordance with this finding, men with a disposition to balding are morphologically (with regard to anthropometric measures) no more masculine than those with good scalp hair growth. When body build and age are taken into consideration, the relations between terminal hair and androgen ratio are also problematical. Increased serum homocysteine (Hcy) can induce liver diseases and can play a remarkable role in hepatic disorders. The purpose of the present study therefore was to investigate the relationship between serum vitamin B(12), folate, zinc and copper, cysteine, and Hcy level differences between cirrhotic patients and healthy subjects. We studied 32 cirrhotic patients (12 females and 20 males) aged 45 +/- 11 years and 32 control subjects (12 females and 20 males) aged 39 +/- 9 years. There was an inverse correlation between Hcy and vitamin B(12) in controls (r = -0.442, p < 0.011) but not in cirrhotic patients (r = -0.147, not significant). Also, mean plasma folate was decreased in cirrhotic patients compared to controls (p < 0.001). Copper increased whereas zinc decreased significantly in cirrhotic patients. A positive correlation was seen between the Cu/Zn ratio and Cu in controls (r = 0.690, p < 0.01), but the correlation between the Cu/Zn ratio and Cu was not significant in the cirrhotic group. Negative correlations were seen between plasma concentration of zinc and the Cu/Zn ratio in controls and cirrhotic patients (r = -0.618, p < 0.01 and r = -0.670, p < 0.01, respectively). Cirrhotic patients displayed multiple abnormalities, including changes in cysteine metabolism and in zinc and copper levels. Although hyperhomocysteinemia is known as an atherogenic and thrombogenic risk factor for cardiovascular disease, it might also be a risk factor for cirrhotic patients. Plasma Hcy, vitamin B(12), and folic acid measurement may be useful in the evaluation of cirrhotic patients.  相似文献

Background

Obesity is associated with both impaired testosterone production and a chronic state of low grade inflammation. Previously it was believed that this inflammation was mediated by a decline in the immunosuppressive action of testosterone. However, more recently an alternative hypothesis (GELDING theory) has suggested that inflammation originating from the passage of intestinal bacteria into the circulation (metabolic endotoxaemia) may actually be the cause of impaired testicular function in obese men. The aim of this study is to investigate if metabolic endotoxaemia, as quantified by serum Lipopolysaccharide Binding Protein (LBP), is associated with impaired testicular endocrine function.

Methods

A total of 50 men aged between 21 and 50 years (mean 35.1?±?6.8 years) were assessed for adiposity (BMI, waist circumference and % body fat using bio-impedance), inflammatory status (serum CRP, IL-1β, IL-6, TNFα and LBP) and testicular endocrine function (serum testosterone, estradiol, AMH, LH and FSH). Statistical analysis was performed using Pearson correlation analysis, with log transformation of data where appropriate, and multi-variate regression.

Results

Overall increasing adiposity (% body fat) was positively associated with metabolic endotoxaemia (LBP, r?=?0.366, p?=?0.009) and inflammation (CRP r?=?0.531, p?<?0.001; IL-6 r?=?0.463, p?=?0.001), while also being negatively correlated with serum testosterone (r?=??0.403, p?=?0.004). Serum testosterone levels were significantly negatively correlated with inflammation (CRP r?=??0.471, p?=?0.001; IL-6 r?=??0.516, p?<?0.001) and endotoxaemia (LBP) after adjusting for serum LH levels (p?=??0.317, p?=?0.03). Furthermore, serum IL-6 was negatively associated with AMH levels (r?=??0.324, p?=?0.023), with a negative trend between LBP and AMH also approaching significance (r?=??0.267, p?=?0.064).

Conclusions

Obesity and its associated metabolic endotoxaemia helps initiate a pro-inflammatory state characterised by raised serum IL-6 levels, which in turn is correlated with impairment of both Leydig (testosterone) and Sertoli cell function (AMH). These results open up the potential for new treatments of obesity related male hypogonadism that focus on preventing the endotoxaemia associated chronic inflammatory state.

The aim of this study was to assess the levels of selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and troponin I (TnI) in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) on admission to our emergency department in comparison to healthy control subjects. Patients with diagnosed ACS (n?=?100) were included in the study group. Control subjects (n?=?100) were selected from healthy volunteers in the same age range. Venous blood samples were obtained to evaluate the levels of Se, Zn, Cu, and TnI (on admission for the ACS group). Serum Se, Zn, and Cu levels were significantly less in the ACS group compared to the control group (p <0.001, p <0.01, and p <0.001, respectively). The serum TnI level was significantly greater in the ACS group compared to the control group (p <0.05). The serum Se level in the ACS group correlated significantly with the TnI level (r?=??0.211, p?=?0.035). These results indicate that Se, Zn, and Cu deficiencies may be risk factors for ACS, and a decreased serum Se level in patients with ACS might reflect the degree of myocardial necrosis.  相似文献

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the concentration of selenium and selected heavy metals and their possible relationship in serum of 25 healthy lactating cows (Montbéliarde) reared in a non-polluted area, in the western part of Poland. Cadmium, lead, copper, and zinc concentrations were determined by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry and Se concentration was determined fluorimetrically. The content of Se, Zn, and Cu was 0.083?±?0.026, 0.629?±?0.413, and 0.152?±?0.042?μg/mL, respectively. The presence of the Cd and Pb was found in all serum samples. Starting from experimental observations demonstrating that a high ratio of zinc to copper led to hypercholesterolemia in rats, serum Zn and Cu levels were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry in 65 normolipemic controls and in 100 subjects with various types of hyperlipoproteinemia (HLP). Serum Zn levels did not significantly differ from control values in any type of HLP. However, hyperlipoproteinemic patients with obvious clinical atherosclerosis displayed significantly lower serum-Zn concentration than hyperlipo-proteinemic subjects without clinical symptoms. On the other hand, when compared to control subjects, serum Cu levels were not found to be decreased, but rather increased, in hyperlipoproteinemic patients with or without atherosclerosis. As a result, the Zn∶Cu ratio appeared to be lower than normal in hyperlipoproteinemic patients with cardiovascular disease. It is conceivable that changes of these trace elements should be rather connected to vessel injury and associated disease than to HLP which, at least in humans, is not accompanied by a high Zn∶Cu ratio.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between the mean concentrations of trace elements and the severity of the seconddegree atrioventricular (AV) block in the mane hair of horses. Electrocardiographs of horses were continually recorded for 6 h using a holter cardiac monitor to determine dropped ventricular beats (DVBs) which can be used as an indicator of the severity of the AV block. Mane hair Ca, Cu, Mg, and Zn concentrations were measured by the particle-induced X-ray emission method. The Zn/Cu ratio and Ca concentration in mane hair were significantly and positively correlated with the hourly DVBs in horse with a second-degree AV block (p<0.01, r2=0.485; p<0.05, r2=0.351, respectively). Proposed diagnostic cutoff points for hair Ca concentration and Zn/Cu ratio based on receiver operating characteristics curves analysis in detecting second-degree AV block were set at 1536 μg/g and 26.0, respectively. Those results with horse hair suggest that the evaluation of the Ca, Cu, Mg, and Zn status in mane hair by this method is strongly related to the severity of second-degree AV block and might predict the susceptibility of an individual much before the development of the symptom.  相似文献

BackgroundTrace elements are important factors in human reproductive health. Among them, special attention is paid to zinc, which is an essential trace element and is necessary for the normal functioning of the male reproductive system and the process of spermatogenesis. The aim of the study was to investigate the association between seminal and serum zinc concentrations and semen quality and reproductive hormone levels in population of Russian young men.MethodsThe study population consisted of 626 young Russian men (median age 22.5 years), recruited from the general population, regardless of their fertility status. Each participant provided semen and blood sample, information about his lifestyle and ethnicity. Semen quality (sperm concentration, motility and morphology), reproductive hormone levels (testosterone, estradiol, LH, FSH and inhibin B), and serum and seminal zinc concentrations were evaluated. The semen samples were analyzed according to the WHO laboratory manual (WHO, 2010). Serum hormones were measured by enzyme immunoassay, zinc concentrations were determined using spectrophotometry and direct colorimetry without deproteinization.ResultsZinc was present in the seminal plasma in a significantly higher concentration than in the blood serum (median serum Zn concentration was 23.6 μmol/L vs seminal Zn concentration 1571.8 μmol/L). The seminal zinc concentration was positively related to the total sperm count, sperm concentration, progressive motility and normal morphology (Spearman’s test: 0.221; 0.286; 0.269; 0.183, respectively, p < 0.001), while the serum Zn concentration was negatively related to serum testosterone and estradiol levels (r = −0.249 and r = −0.096, respectively, p < 0.001−0.05). It was found that the seminal Zn content in men with normal semen quality was higher compared to men with lowered semen quality (means: 6.37 and 5.03 μmol/ejaculate, respectively, p < 0.001). Similarly, the semen volume, total sperm count, sperm concentration, progressive motility, normal morphology and the serum testosterone level in men with the seminal Zn deficiency were lower than in men with the normal seminal Zn content.ConclusionBased on the results of our population-based study, seminal Zn levels were closely associated with semen parameters in young men, so Zn deficiency may be an important risk factor for lowered semen quality. Seminal Zn determinations should be considered as a useful tool in addition to other parameters in assessing male fertility.  相似文献

BackgroundMore and more studies have investigated the relationship between serum copper (Cu) and/or zinc (Zn) levels and breast cancer (BC). However, the results are inconsistent. It is unclear whether the serum Cu to Zn ratio (Cu/Zn) is associated with BC risk. Therefore, we evaluated serum Cu and Zn concentrations, and Cu/Zn in BC through meta-analysis.Materials and methodsStudies reporting serum Cu and/or Zn concentrations in BC patients and controls from 1991 to 2020 were identified from PubMed, CNKI, and Wanfang databases online. Based on a random effects model, summary standard mean differences (SMDs) and the corresponding 95 % confidence intervals (95 % CIs) were applied to compare the serum levels of Cu, Zn and Cu/Zn between BC patients and controls.ResultsThirty-six eligible studies involving 5747 female subjects were included. The present study illustrated that the BC patients had significantly higher serum Cu levels than healthy controls (HC) (SMD (95 % CI): 1.99(1.48, 2.49)) and patients with benign breast diseases (BD) (SMD (95 % CI): 0.99(0.38, 1.61)). However, Zn concentrations were statistically decreased in BC patients than HC (SMD (95 % CI): -1.20(-1.74, -0.66)) and BD (SMD (95 % CI): -1.13 (-1.73, -0.54)). Cu/Zn concentrations were remarkably increased in BC patients than HC (SMD (95 % CI): 2.75(1.79, 3.60)) and BD (SMD (95 % CI): 2.98(1.91, 4.05)) in some studies.ConclusionThe results show that elevated serum levels of Cu and Cu/Zn, as well as decreased Zn might be associated with increased risk of breast cancer. These three parameters have the potential to distinguish breast cancer from benign breast diseases.  相似文献

The relation between hair growth and levels of sex hormones in serum and saliva was investigated in 256 !Kung San and Kavango men (ages 18 to 39 years) from Namibia/Southern Africa. Serum concentrations of total testosterone (Tser), 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and estradiol (E2) as well as the level of bioavailable non-SHBG-bound testosterone in the saliva (Tsal) were determined by radioimmunoassay. The distribution and density of scalp and facial hair as well as the development of terminal hair on the chest, abdomen, pubic area, arms, fingers, and legs were categorized using objective criteria. Covariance analyses revealed marked differences in the distribution of body hair in the San and the Negro sample. This is partly explained by a significant influence of androgen and estrogen levels on the growth of terminal hair. DHT and the ratio DHT/Tser are significantly positively related to midphalangeal hair growth and negatively to pubic hair development. Tsal, the bioavailable fraction of total testosterone, exerts a weak positive influence on the degree of arm and leg hair growth; the most significant positive effect on the growth of abdominal, arm, and leg hair in our samples is caused by E2. The ratio Tser/E2 correlates significantly negatively with the arm and leg hair development and the ratio DHT/E2 with the degree of abdominal, pubic, arm, and leg hair, whereas lower DHT concentrations occur in men with stronger hair development. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

This study examined the effect of diet-induced, marginal zinc deficiency for 7 wks in 15 men (aged 25.3 +/- 3.3 yrs; mean +/- SD) on selected indices of iron and copper status. The regimen involved low-zinc diets based on egg albumin and soy protein with added phytate and calcium such that mean [phytate]/[Zn] and [phytate] X [Ca]/[Zn] molar ratios were 209 and 4116, respectively, for 1 wk, followed by 70 and 2000, respectively, for 6 wks. Subjects were then repleted with 30 mg Zn/d for 2 wks. Plasma copper, Cu,Zn-superoxide dismutase (Cu,Zn-SOD) activity in plasma and red blood cells (RBC), hemoglobin, hematocrit, and serum ferritin were determined weekly on fasting blood samples. Significant reductions (p less than 0.05) after 7 wks in RBC Cu,Zn-superoxide dismutase (49.5 +/- 7.2 vs 33.6 +/- 6.3 U/mg Hb) and serum ferritin (69.2 +/- 38.7 vs 53.8 +/- 33.7 micrograms/L) occurred; no comparable decline was noted for plasma Cu, hemoglobin, or hematocrit. Significant (p less than 0.05) but less consistent changes were also observed in plasma superoxide dismutase activity. None of the changes were associated with the decreases in plasma, urinary and hair zinc concentrations, and alkaline phosphatase activity in RBC membranes. Results indicate that the biochemical iron and copper status of the subjects was marginally impaired, probably from the dietary regimen that induced marginal zinc deficiency.  相似文献

目的通过对猕猴脱毛的相关营养学指标的比较分析,为改善人工饲养猕猴脱毛状况及其防治提供参考数据。方法根据被毛状况分组A、B、C,采集试验猴被毛和血清,测定其微量元素和氨基酸以及血清矿物元素,对各组相应指标进行比较分析。结果各组试验猴被毛Cu、Fe含量无显著性差异(P〉0.05),但Mn、Zn、Pb、As则均有极显著性差异(P〈0.01)。被毛脯氨酸、缬氨酸、氨和精氨酸的含量A组和B组极显著低于C组(P〈0.01),酪氨酸含量则是A显著低于B组(P〈0.05),且极显著低于C组(P〈0.01),B组又显著低于C组(P〈0.05);胱氨酸含量C组高于A组和B组(P〈0.01);苯丙氨酸含量是B组高于C组(P〈0.05),且高于A组(P〈0.01),C组又高于A组(P〈0.05);赖氨酸、组氨酸和氨基酸总量含量是C组高于A组(P〈0.05)和高于B组(P〈0.01),A组高于B组(P〈0.05),其余氨基酸均无显著性差异(P〉0.05)。A、B组的血清Mg、P、Cu和Ca的含量高于C组,其余矿物元素的含量基本一致。结论 Mn过量、Zn的供给不足可能是影响人工饲养猕猴被毛质量的因素;胱氨酸对改善猕猴被毛品质、提高被毛质量应该有一定作用;高营养水平的Ca、Mg、P和Cu可能会影响人工饲养的猕猴的被毛质量。  相似文献

Zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) concentrations in sera and seminal plasma of 60 infertile males (40 oligozoospermic and 20 azoospermic) and 40 males with evidence of fertility (normozoospermic; controls) were estimated using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The results were correlated with the subject's spermogram and hormonal levels in order to determine their relationship and significance in male infertility. The mean serum concentration of zinc was significantly (p<0.01) higher in oligozoospermic males when compared to azoospermic subjects and controls. The ratios of serum Zn to seminal plasma Zn were 1:1, 1:3 or 1:4 in oligozoospermic, normozoospermic or azoospermic subjects, respectively. While the mean Cu concentration was significantly higher in serum than seminal plasma in all groups, the Zn concentration was significantly (p<0.05) higher in seminal plasma than serum. The Cu/Zn ratio in seminal plasma was significantly (p<0.01) higher in controls compared with other groups. A significant (p<0.01) inverse correlation was observed between serum Zn and sperm counts. Similarly, seminal plasma Zn negatively correlated with spermatozoa viability. In conclusion, the measurement of serum Zn level, apart from being a good index of the assessment of prostatic secretion and function, may be considered a useful tool in addition to other parameters in assessing male infertility. Also, a lower Cu/Zn ratio in seminal plasma may serve as a supportive tools in assessing male infertility.  相似文献

The primary objective of the research is to estimate the dependence between hair mercury content, hair selenium, mercury-to-selenium ratio, serum lipid spectrum, and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) activity in 63 adults (40 men and 23 women). Serum triglyceride (TG) concentration in the high-mercury group significantly exceeded the values obtained for low- and medium-mercury groups by 72 and 42 %, respectively. Serum GGT activity in the examinees from high-Hg group significantly exceeded the values of the first and the second groups by 75 and 28 %, respectively. Statistical analysis of the male sample revealed similar dependences. Surprisingly, no significant changes in the parameters analyzed were detected in the female sample. In all analyzed samples, hair mercury was not associated with hair selenium concentrations. Significant correlation between hair mercury content and serum TG concentration (r?=?0.531) and GGT activity (r?=?0.524) in the general sample of the examinees was detected. The respective correlations were observed in the male sample. Hair mercury-to-selenium ratios significantly correlated with body weight (r?=?0.310), body mass index (r?=?0.250), serum TG (r?=?0.389), atherogenic index (r?=?0.257), and GGT activity (r?=?0.393). The same correlations were observed in the male sample. Hg/Se ratio in women did not correlate with the analyzed parameters. Generally, the results of the current study show the following: (1) hair mercury is associated with serum TG concentration and GGT activity in men, (2) hair selenium content is not related to hair mercury concentration, and (3) mercury-to-selenium ratio correlates with lipid spectrum parameters and GGT activity.  相似文献

Context: Complementary alternative medicine therapies based on the use of cesium chloride preparations for the treatment of cancer and radiation poisoning, have generated therapeutic interest; but oral or intravenous administration of cesium chloride (CsCl) to cancer patients as an alternative mode of cancer therapy have not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Objective: Cesium (Cs) levels from human tissue were measured to determine exposure to an alternative medical treatment. Cesium levels are reported from two patients who were administered cesium chloride in conjunction with aloe vera as part of an alternative cancer treatment. Design: The samples were analyzed by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry with Zeeman background correction. As a reference, Cs was also determined in brain, liver, kidney, and whole blood from control case materials retrieved from the National Tissue Repository of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. Results: High levels of cesium were found in brain, liver, kidney, bile, gastric content, and whole blood collected at autopsy as compared to reference levels. The administration of cesium chloride resulted in blood levels a factor of 1100 higher than normal. The highest Cs concentrations were found in the liver (1029 μg/g, dry wt), followed by the kidney (815 μg/g, dry wt) and brain (219 μg/g, dry wt). Conclusion: The high accumulation in the liver suggests that hepatotoxicity from Cs might be an initial presenting symptom in Cs-poisoning cases. This is the first report describing two cases with high Cs levels in human tissues.
