The process kinetics of a lab-scale upflow aerobic immobilized biomass (UAIB) reactor using simulated sugar-manufacturing wastewater as feed was investigated. The experimental unit consisted of a 22l reactor filled with high porosity pumice stone. The UAIB reactor was tested under different organic loads and different hydraulic retention times (HRT) and the substrate loading removal rate was compared with prediction of Stover-Kincannon model, second-order model and the first order substrate removal model. After obtaining steady-state conditions, organic loading rate was increased from 750 to 4500 g COD/m(3) day to resemble wastewater from sugar production lines, and hydraulic retention time was decreased from 1 to 0.5 days, stepwise. Nine different operational conditions were applied changing these two parameters in a certain program. As a result of the calculations, Stover-Kincannon model and second-order model known as "Grau" model were found to be the most appropriate models for this reactor. Stover-Kincannon model and Grau second-order model gave high correlation coefficients, which were 99.7% and 99.4%, respectively. Therefore, these models could be used in predicting the behavior or design of the UAIB reactors.  相似文献

Wastewater treatment using encapsulated biomass is a promising approach for high-rate resource recovery. Encapsulation matrices can be customized to achieve desired biomass retention and mass transport performance. This, in turn, facilitates treatment of different waste streams. In this study, a model was developed to describe calcium-alginate beads encapsulating hydrogen-producing biomass, with the goal of enabling appropriate a priori customization of the system. The model was based on a classic diffusion-reaction model, but also included the growth of encapsulated biomass and product inhibition. Experimental data were used to verify the model, which accurately described the effect of hydraulic retention time, bead size, and feed concentration on resource (hydrogen) recovery from brewery wastewater. Sensitivity analyses revealed that the hydrogen production rate was insensitive to substrate diffusivity and bead size, but sensitive to the substrate partition coefficient, initial encapsulated biomass concentration, and the total volume of beads in the reactor, demonstrating that this system was growth-limited rather than diffusion-limited under the tested conditions. Because the model quantifies the relationship between the hydrogen production rate and various input and operating parameters, it should be possible to extend the model to determine the most cost-effective system for optimal performance with a given waste stream.  相似文献

Up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors are being used with increasing regularity all over the world, especially in India, for a variety of wastewater treatment operations. Consequently, there is a need to develop methodologies enabling one to determine UASB reactor performance, not only for designing more efficient UASB reactors but also for predicting the performance of existing reactors under various conditions of influent wastewater flows and characteristics. This work explores the feasibility of application of an artificial neural network-based model for simulating the performance of an existing UASB reactor. Accordingly, a neural network model was designed and trained to predict the steady-state performance of a UASB reactor treating high-strength (unrefined sugar based) wastewater. The model inputs were organic loading rate, hydraulic retention time, and influent bicarbonate alkalinity. The output variables were one or more of the following, effluent substrate concentration (Se), reactor bicarbonate alkalinity, reactor pH, reactor volatile fatty acid concentration, average gas production rate, and percent methane content of the gas. Training of the neural network model was achieved using a large amount of experimentally obtained reactor performance data from the reactor mentioned above as the training set. Training was followed by validation using independent sets of performance data obtained from the same UASB reactor. Subsequently, simulations were performed using the validated neural network model to determine the impact of changes in parameters like influent chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration and hydraulic retention time on the reactor performance. Simulation results thus obtained were carefully analyzed based on qualitative understanding of UASB process and were found to provide important insights into key variables that were responsible for influencing the working of the UASB reactor under varying input conditions.  相似文献

The biological phosphorus removal process is a process which depends basically on three internal storage compounds. Poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) produced during the anaerobic phase is used as substrate for biomass, polyphosphate, and glycogen formation. The reaction rates of the aerobic processes are primarily determined by the PHB content of the cells. This PHB content is highly dynamic due to the conversions during the anaerobic and aerobic phase of the cycle and the ratio between substrate addition and biomass present in the reactor. The amount of biomass present in the reactor is determined by the sludge retention time and growth rate. A metabolic model of the biological phosphorus removal process was developed and verified over a wide range of growth rates. The effect of different growth rates on the internal fractions of stored components was determined and described mathematically. One set of kinetic parameters was capable of describing the measured conversions of all components observed in the reactor as a function of the sludge retention time. The aim of this work was to model the biological activity and anticipate the kinetic behaviour of microorganisms and the overall performance of the process according to a specific model and running parameters. The bacterial inoculum used in these experiments was a mixture of cultures taken from the wastewater treatment plant in Montpellier. The fermentor, used in association with an ultrafiltration separation stage (with a filtration area of 0.2 m2) had a working volume of 15.8 l. For various working conditions (different solid retention times, different hydraulic retention times and substrate concentrations), the biomass concentration and the residual substrate concentration, expressed in terms of dry weight and chemical oxygen demand, respectively, were measured. The basic idea of modelling was related to the concept of maintenance. The coefficient of maintenance, E, and the theoretical conversion yield, y, were therefore calculated. The values of E and y, measured for total cell recycling experiments and for experiments with various solid retention times, remained similar and were found to equal 0.040 mgCOD mgVSS h−1 and 0.36 mgVSS mgCOD−1, respectively. Determining these two constants and modelling the treatment process made it possible to anticipate the optimal biomass concentration for a defined removal efficiency under different steady-state operating conditions.  相似文献

An extended dynamical model for growth and sporulation of Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki in an intermittent fed-batch culture with total cell retention is proposed. This model differs from reported models, by including dynamics for natural death of cells and substrate consumption for cell maintenance. The proposed model uses sigmoid functions to describe these kinetic parameters. Equations for time evolution of substrate, vegetative, sporulated and total cell concentration were taken from previous works. Model parameters were determined from batch experimental data obtained in pilot plant. Parameter identification was developed in two stages: (1) coarse identification using a multivariable optimization with constraints algorithm, (2) fine identification by heuristic fit of model parameters looking for a minimal model error. The proposed model estimates adequate time evolution of the process variables with a mean error of 2.6% on substrate concentration and 6.7% on biomass concentration.  相似文献

The biosorption of zinc from model solution as well as wastewater by Arthrospira (Spirulina) platensis biomass was studied. Adsorption capacity of the biosorbent was investigated as a function of contact time between adsorbent and zinc, the initial metals and sorbent concentration, pH value, and temperature. The ability of Arthrospira biomass for zinc biosorption exhibited a maximum at the pH range 4–8. Equilibrium data fitted well with the Langmuir model as well as the Freundlich model with maximum adsorption capacity of 7.1 mg/g. The pseudo second-order model was found to correlate well with the experimental data. Different thermodynamic parameters, ΔG°, ΔH° and ΔS° were evaluated and it has been found that the sorption was feasible, spontaneous, and endothermic in nature. The process of zinc removal from industrial effluent was studied at different time of sorbat–sorbent interaction and different sorbent dosage. Maximum zinc removal (83%) was obtained at sorbent concentration 60 g/L during 1-h experiment. The results indicate that Arthrospira platensis biomass could be effectively used for zinc removal from industrial effluents.  相似文献

The dynamics of growth and death of immobilized Nitrosomonas europaea were studied. For this, the death rate of suspended cells was determined in the absence of ammonium or oxygen by following the loss of respiration activity and by fluorescein-diacetate (FDA)/lissamine-green staining techniques. The death rates obtained (1.06 x 10(-6) s(-1) or 4.97 x 10(-6) s(-1) in the absence of oxygen or ammonium, respectively) were incorporated in a dynamic growth model and the effects on the performance of the immobilized-cell process illustrated by model simulations. These model simulations and experimental validation show that if decay of biomass occurs the biomass concentration in the center of the bead decreases. As a result, the systems react slower to changes in substrate concentrations than if all cells remain viable. To show that cells in the center of the bead died, the FDA and lissamine-green staining techniques were adapted for immobilized cells. It was shown that biomass decay occurred, especially in the center of the bead; the amount of cells decreased there, and the remaining cells were all stained with lissamine green indicating cell death. After the substrate availability was decreased, also cells near the surface of the bead lost their viability. The number of viable cells increased again after increasing the substrate concentration as the result of cell multiplication. At low substrate concentrations and low hydraulic retention times, as for example in the treatment of domestic wastewater, the death rate of cells is thus an important parameter for the performance of the immobilized-cell system. Simultaneous removal of organic materials and recovery of protein in the form of bacterial cells from a simulated high strength biodegradable wastewater was studied using thermophilic aerobic microorganisms. A naturally occurring mixed culture of thermophilic microorganisms was obtained from soil, wastewater, hay, silage, etc. A chemically defined medium containing glucose along with other essential nutrients was employed as the feed. The kinetic behavior of the culture was studied in a continuous culture at an optimum temperature of 58 degrees C. Studies were were also performed on the effects of solids retention time (SRT) on the observed cell yield and the protein and ash content of the harvested biomass. An economic analysis of the process for single cell protein recovery was given.  相似文献

The utilization of microalgae for wastewater treatment represents an attractive opportunity for wastewater valorization through the use of the produced biomass. Five strains of microalgae were isolated from municipal wastewater and grown in autoclaved and non-autoclaved effluent at 30 °C and 150 μmol photons m?2 s?1 to study biomass production, nutrient removal, and the biochemical composition of the biomass. All strains reached high biomass productivity (35.6 to 54.2 mg dry weight L?1 day?1) within 4 days of batch culturing. In this period, ammonium-N and phosphate were reduced by more than 60 and 90 %, respectively. The high growth rate (0.57 to 1.06 day?1) ensured a rapid removal of nutrients and thereby a short retention time. By the fourth day of cultivation, the algal biomass contained 32 % protein, but only 11 % lipids and 18 % carbohydrates. It was found that the biomass was a suitable raw material for biogas production by anaerobic digestion. Biodigestion of obtained biomass was simulated by employing the Aspen HYSYS modeling software, resulting in methane yields comparable to those found in the literature. The elemental analysis of the algal biomass showed very low concentrations of pollutants, demonstrating the potential of use of the digestate from biodigestion as a bio-fertilizer.  相似文献

Treatment of wet corn-milling wastewater with filamentous fungi was investigated as a means of obtaining fungal biomass as an additional byproduct. Competitive bacterial growth is a common problem during this nonaseptic treatment process. Selective disinfection with ozone was evaluated for eliminating bacterial populations during fungal cultivation. Three laboratory-scale continuous flow aerated reactors were operated under nonaseptic conditions at 38 degrees C, hydraulic retention time of 8h and pH of 4. The bacterial population was reduced by one log with respect to the control when ozone was dosed at a concentration above 47+/-2mg/L. An ozone dosage of about 57mg/L was found to be most effective in improving both fungal biomass production and soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) removal (up to 90%). Fungal biomass concentration increased from c. 1.45g/L (control) to c. 1.75g/L at a 57-mg/L ozone dosage. Higher and lower dosages of ozone resulted in poorer fungal growth and lower SCOD removal.  相似文献

Step changes in inlet concentration has been introduced into the completely mixed three-phase fluidized bed biofilm reactor treating simulated domestic wastewater to study the dynamic behavior of the system and to establish the suitable kinetic model from the response curve. Three identical reactors having different biomass volumes were operated in parallel. It was found that the response curves showed second-order characteristics, and thus at least two first-order differential equations are necessary to simulate the substrate and biomass response curves. Nonlinear regression analysis was performed using different types of rate equations and their corresponding kinetic parameters were used to simulate the theoretical response curve using the Runge–Kutta numerical integration method. As a result, although various types of conventional biokinetic models such as Monod, Haldane and Andrew types were examined, all the theoretical substrate response curves underestimated time constants compared to the actual substrate response plots. On the other hand, the theoretical curve of the kinetic model that incorporates adsorption term has best fit to the actual response in most of the cases. Thus, it was concluded that adsorption of substrate onto biofilm and carrier particles has significant effect on the dynamic response in biofilm processes.  相似文献

Removal of chlorophenols in sequential anaerobic-aerobic reactors   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Combination of upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) and aerobic rotating biological contactor (RBC) reactors having higher biomass concentration and higher sludge retention time (SRT) was applied for the sequential treatment of priority pollutant chlorophenol containing wastewater. Target compounds 2-chlorophenol (2-CP) and 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) present in two simulated wastewaters at a concentration of 30 mg/l each individually were sequentially treated in continuous mode by combined UASB-I, RBC-I and combined UASB-II, RBC-II reactors, respectively after the acclimation of their biomass with the corresponding chlorophenol. Reactor combinations took 190 and 215 days for acclimation with 30 mg/l of 2-CP and 2,4-DCP respectively. Hydraulic retention time (HRT) studies showed that 12h HRT of UASB-I and 23 h HRT of RBC-I as well as 12h HRT of UASB-II and 28.8h HRT of RBC-II were the optimum combinations for the treatment of simulated wastewater containing 2-CP and 2,4-DCP respectively. Optimum HRT combinations produced 2-CP and 2,4-DCP effluent having corresponding chlorophenol concentration of below detectable limit (BDL) and 0.1 mg/l respectively. Half velocity coefficients (Ks) for 2-CP and 2,4-DCP biodegradation in UASB reactors were determined to be 5.07 mg 2-CP/l and 6.49 mg 2,4-DCP/l. Optimum ratio of substrate (chlorophenol): co-substrate (sodium acetate) was 1:100.  相似文献

This paper describes the thermophilic anaerobic biodegradation of wine distillery wastewater (vinasses) in a laboratory fluidised bed reactor (AFB) with a porous support medium. The experimental protocol was defined to examine the effect of increasing organic loading rate on the efficiency of AFB and to report on its steady-state performance. Moreover, in order to evaluate treatment efficiency and to investigate fermentation kinetics in an AFB reactor, experimental data were used to estimate the ‘active biomass’ concentration using an autocatalytic kinetic model proposed in this paper, since viable biomass in AFB reactors is very difficult to measure experimentally. The AFB reactor was subjected to a program of steady-state operation over a range of hydraulic retention time (HRTs) of 2.5–0.37 days and organic loading rate (OLRs) up to 5.88 kgCOD/m3/day in order to evaluate its treatment capacity. The AFB reactor was initially operated with organic loading rate of 5.88 kgCOD/m3/day and HRT of 2.5 days. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency was found to be 96.5% in the reactor while the methane content of biogas produced in the digester reached 1.08 m3/m3digester/day. Over 94 days operating period, an OLR of 32 kgCOD/m3/day at a food-to-micro-organisms (F:M) ratio of 0.55 kgCOD/kgVSatt/day was achieved with 81.5% COD removal efficiency in the experimental AFB reactor. At this moment, the methane content of biogas produced in the digester reached 9.0 m3/m3digester/day. The proposed kinetic model is able to estimate kinetic constants of the biodegradation process: non-biodegradable substrate (Snb) and active adhered biomass concentration (Xa). The parameters of the model were obtained by the curve-fitting method to the proposed kinetic model using the COD as substrate of the anaerobic process and assuming a maximum specific μmax: 0.72 per day. The comparison of the measured concentration of volatile attached solids (VSatt) with the estimated ‘active’ biomass concentration indicated that extremely high ‘active biomass’ concentrations can be maintained in the system because biofilm thickness is limited by the liquid flow rate applied. This is due to the fact that the anaerobic fluidised bed system retains the growth support medium in suspension by drag forces exerted by upflowing wastewater, and the distribution of biomass holdup (in the form of a biofilm) is thus relatively uniform.  相似文献

The reliability of the process of Ramanathan and Gaudy (Biotechnol Bioeng., 13 , 125 (1971)) for the completely mixed activated-sludge process holding the recycle cell concentration, XR, as a system constant with respect to step changes in hydraulic retention time was investigated. The experiments were run at initial dilution rates of ?, ?, ¼, and ½ hr?1 treating a soft drink bottling wastewater. The influent substrate concentration was maintained at 1000 mg/liter chemical oxygen demand and the hydraulic recycle ratio at 0.3. The recycle sludge concentration was maintained at about 7000 mg/liter. It was found that the system could accommodate hydraulic shock loads up to 200% positive changes and down to 50%negative changes without disruption of the effluent quality. Shorter retention time of the range studied, from 2 to 8 hr, has the advantage of shorter response time with respect to the response of the concentration of biological solids in the reactor.  相似文献

The anaerobic treatment of baker's yeast wastewater was studied using an anaerobic biological contact reactor (AnRBC) and a fixed-film reactor. The AnRBC had an active biomass developed within the reactor before this study commenced; however, the fixed-film reactor was started without attached biomass in a support structure. The gas production rates obtained for the AnRBC were between 0·55 and 0·61 litre methane per litre reactor per day. However, a gas production rate of only 0·46 litre methane per litre reactor per day was achieved after a four-month operating period for the fixed-film reactor. Higher chemical oxygen demand reduction was also found in the AnRBC. The results indicated that the presence of high sulfate concentration in baker's yeast wastewater affected teh start-up process. The reactor with fully developed active biomass was less susceptible to sulfate inhibition and showed improved anaerobic digestion. Results indicate that the reactor should be innoculated by feeding nutrient-balanced substrate before it was subjected to the digestion of baker's yeast wastewater. The fixed-film reactor was also fed with the substrate contianing sodium molybdate, an inhibitor of sulfate-reducing bacteria. The results indicated that both methanogenic and sulfate-reducing bacteria were inhibited.  相似文献

Mushroom production on coffee pulp as substrate generates an intense black residual liquid, which requires suitable treatment. In the present study, Pleurotus ostreatus growth in wastewater from mushroom farm was evaluated as a potential biological treatment process for decolourisation as well as to obtain biomass (liquid inoculum). Culture medium components affecting mycelial growth were determined, evaluating colour removal. Laccase activity was monitored during the process. P. ostreatus was able to grow in non diluted WCP. Highest biomass yield was obtained when glucose (10 g/l) was added. The addition of this carbon source was necessary for efficient decolourisation. Agitation of the culture improved biodegradation of WCP as well as fungal biomass production. Laccase and manganese-independent peroxidase activities were detected during fungal treatment of the WCP by P. ostreatus CCEBI 3024. The laccase enzyme showed good correlation with colour loss. Both wastewater colour and pollution load (as chemical oxygen demand) decreased more than 50% after 10 days of culture. Phenols were reduced by 92%.  相似文献

Kinetic experiments were carried out in a semicontinuous wastewater treatment process called self-cycling fermentation (SCF) using a defined mixed culture and various concentrations of synthetic brewery wastewater. The same consortium, which had been previously identified as Acinetobacter sp., Enterobacter sp., and Candida sp., were used in these experiments. The overall rate of substrate removal was attributable to both suspended microbes and the biofilm that formed during the treatment process. A rate expression was developed for the SCF system for a range of synthetic wastewaters containing glucose and various initial concentrations of ethanol and maltose. The data indicated that substrate removal by the suspended cells was directly related to the biomass concentration. However, substrate removal by the biofilm was apparently not affected by the biofilm thickness and was a function of substrate concentration only.  相似文献

Nutrients in piggery wastewater with high organic matter, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) content were biologically removed in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) with anaerobic, aerobic and anoxic stages. The SBR was operated with 3 cycles/day, temperature 30 degrees C, sludge retention time (SRT) 1 day and hydraulic retention time (HRT) 11 days. With a wastewater containing 1500 mg/l ammonium and 144 mg/l phosphate, a removal efficiency of 99.7% for nitrogen and 97.3% for phosphate was obtained. Experiments set up to evaluate the effect of temperature on the process showed that it should be run at temperatures higher than 16 degrees C to obtain good removals (> 95%). Batch tests (ammonia utilization rate, nitrogen utilization rate and oxygen utilization rate) proved to be good tools to evaluate heterotrophic and autotrophic biomass activity. The SBR proved to be a very flexible tool, and was particularly suitable for the treatment of piggery wastewater, characterized by high nutrient content and by frequent changes in composition and therefore affecting process conditions.  相似文献
