To understand the riverine life history of the amphidromous goby, Sicyopterus japonicus, studies were conducted in the Ota River, Wakayama, Japan. They were distributed from 3 to 23 km upstream from the river mouth, and abundance was higher in the middle reaches than in the upper and lower reaches. Fish were not observed in rapids during winter, suggesting a seasonal change of habitat. Body length ranged from 24 to 120 mm SL. Both females and males ranged from 1 to 6 years old, and males had larger asymptotic length than females. Condition factor showed two peaks in July and November, which appeared to correspond to the spawning season and preparation for over wintering. Gonad somatic index increased in summer with a peak in August indicating a summertime spawning season that was confirmed by collections of the newly hatched larvae migrating downstream. Eggs of 0.5 mm diameter were attached to stones and newly hatched larvae made continuous vertical movements of sinking and upward swimming and the distance of each movement was longer in freshwater than in seawater. The newly hatched larvae were collected at nighttime (19:00–24:00) mainly in August. Those larvae were very small (mean: 1.4 mm TL) with a yolk sac and no eye pigmentation. Low wintertime temperatures are likely an important determinant of the spawning and recruitment seasons and seasonal changes of activity of this species that lives at much higher latitudes than all other species of the subfamily.  相似文献

Three late metamorphic transformation larvae ofPoecilopsetta praelonga (68.0–82.3 mm SL) and a juvenile (92.7 mm SL) captured from the waters off northwestern Australia (400–460 m deep) are described. The transformation larvae ofP. praelonga are distinguishable from the congeners of the same stage in having relatively low body depth (2.20–2.44 in SL), relatively large maxilla extending to anterior one-third of lower eye, and seven and six distinct spots along the dorsal and ventral margins of ocular side body, respectively. In the smallest specimen, the intestine was expanded posteriorly beyond the posterior wall of visceral cavity, but not in the larger specimens. The pectoral fin rays and the spines of scales were supposed to begin to be formed by about 80 mm SL. Ontogenetic changes which include decreasing ratios of upper jaw length to head length. and increasing ratios of depth of body muscle to body depth, were observed, based on a comparison of transformation larvae, a juvenile and adults.  相似文献

 Engraulid larvae and juveniles collected from the surf zone off the Sikao River, Trang, southern Thailand, in the period between August 1999 and September 2000 were identified as Thryssa setirostris (n = 249, 14.1–25.7 mm SL) and T. hamiltonii (n = 731, 15.2–22.2 mm SL), based on the number of lower gillrakers and maxilla morphology. The two species were easily distinguishable by the melanophore pattern distributed on the anterior part of the striated hindgut, T. setirostris possessing three to five melanophores along the ventral midline and T. hamiltonii lacking such melanophores. The ratios of head length and eye diameter to SL also differed between the species, both being higher in T. hamiltonii. The distribution of the two species was limited to the surf zone outside the river mouth, that region being characterized by a higher salinity than the river and its tributaries.  相似文献

Synopsis The leptocephalous larval stages of the bonefish (Albulidae: Albula) are abundant in the coastal regions and hypersaline lagoons (esteros) throughout the Gulf of California during winter and spring. Inshore movements of leptocephali were studied by sampling the entrance to Estero Miramar, at Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico, from February to May, 1981. Thirty-three samples were taken at various times during flood tide. All but four of the samples were taken after sunset. Leptocephali were collected in all months except May. The results suggest that leptocephali enter the estero only during the first few hours of flood tide. Large numbers of larvae were observed during the day at ebb tide maintaining their near-shore position in the entrance channel. These larvae did not appear to be migrating into the estero. This, together with the absence of larvae in daytime samples, suggests that the migration is nocturnal. Most of the 667 leptocephali collected during the sampling period had completed larval growth or were just beginning the metamorphic interval. The median standard length (SL) was 61 mm and the mode was 62 mm. The largest leptocephali measured 71 mm SL. Since metamorphosis is accompanied by a decrease in length, it was concluded that the maximum size attained during larval growth is about 71 mm SL.  相似文献

We investigated the breeding season and size at maturation and described the morphology of newly released Hippichthys spicifer larvae collected from the estuaries of four rivers on northern Okinawa-jima Island, southern Japan. The minimum size of brooding males was 108 mm standard length (SL). The smallest mature female, as estimated from gonadosomatic index (GSI) analysis and histological observations of gonads, was about 100 mm SL. Histological observations showed the gonad of H. spicifer to be a cylindrical tube with a sequential pattern of follicle development and a single germinal ridge. We surmised that the breeding season is year-round, as shown by monthly changes in female GSI, gonad histology, and monthly changes in the occurrence of brooding males. The monthly changes in female GSI and proportions of brooding males were small in winter. The number of eggs in the male brood pouch ranged from 114 to 1,764 (604.4 ± 322.8, mean ± standard deviation; n = 25). The SL of the released larvae was 9.9 mm. All fins except the pectoral fins were formed, the body was elongated, and the developmental stage was similar to that of other Urophori species. The smallest individual present in the mangrove areas of estuaries was 78.0 mm SL.  相似文献

A total of 211 larval and juvenileNibea mitsukurii (4.0–19.0 mm SL) was collected with a small seine in surf zones of Tosa Bay during the period of May 1981 to June 1984. They had morphological characteristics common to the larvae and juveniles of Sciaenidae, but were distinguished from the others by the distribution pattern of melanophores on body and spines at the anterior tip of maxillary. They occurred only in surf zone of Tei out of three locations facing Tosa Bay from middle May to middle August. Temperatures and salinities at the place when they were collected ranged from 21.7 to 29.5°C and from 24.5 to 31.3‰, respectively. Good catches were observed when minute dusts floated abundantly in the surf zone. In past studies using traditional larval nets or minnow-nets in coastal or shallow waters of Tosa Bay, larval and juvenileN. mitsukurii were not reported. It seems that they occur in association with minute dusts in extremely shallow waters such as surf zones.  相似文献

Synopsis Eight hundred and one yellowfin tuna larvae ranging from 2.57–7.48 mm SL were collected near the Mississippi River discharge plume in the Gulf of Mexico during July and September, 1987. Larvae were most abundant at intermediate salinities (i.e. frontal waters) where chlorophylla and macrozooplankton displacement values were also highest. Using sagittal otolith microstructure, we estimated larval ages ranging from 3–14 d. These ages were used to back calculate spawning dates from 13–24 July and 22–31 August. Mean absolute individual growth rate (length age–1) was 0.47 mm d–1, with the least squares linear regression SL = 1.67 + 0.47 AGE (r2 = 0.60, Pr> F = 0.0001) representing the best growth curve. Highest growth occurred at intermediate salinities near 31%, and temperatures near 29° C. There was significant temporal variation in growth, with larvae collected in July growing slower than those from September (0.37 and 0.48 mm d–1, respectively). The pooled instantaneous daily mortality rate (Z) of the larvae was estimated to be 0.33 d–1 (0.16 d–1 in July and 0.41 d–1 in September). These results show that significant spawning of yellowfin tuna may occur in the northern Gulf of Mexico in the vicinity of the Mississippi River discharge plume, and suggest that larval growth and survival may be enhanced in the plume frontal waters.  相似文献

In order to examine the reproductive biology and growth of Herklotsichthys quadrimaculatus in the northernmost part of its reproductive range, the size frequency, gonadal development, and otolith daily increments of this species were collected from the coastal waters of Okinawa Island, southern Japan. Juveniles (<25 mm standard length, SL) were found from April to August. Their size increased to ca. 100 mm SL in November and subsequently remained unchanged. The gonadosomatic index of females was higher (>3.0) between March and August, which was the estimated spawning period. The modal hatching period back‐calculated from otolith daily increments was from April to May, which would be the peak of spawning. Because mature and spent ovaries also contained mature and immature oocytes, it was concluded that females spawn several times during the spawning season. Age determination from otolith increments showed logistic growth up to 97 mm (ca. 180 days post‐hatch), after which growth was almost stagnant. Maximum size and age were 121.6 mm SL and 384 days, respectively. The adult size decreased between August and September, indicating a change in the age cohort. Thus, the fish reached the end of their lifespans after spawning. Some of these ecological features were different from those of a previous study performed in southern areas; these differences suggest a flexible life history that could change to adapt to the surrounding environment.  相似文献

We investigated the size at maturation, breeding season, and morphological development of larvae and juveniles of a freshwater pipefish Microphis leiaspis, which belongs to Gastrophori, collected from three rivers on the northern part of Okinawa-jima Island, Japan. The minimum size of brooding males was 105–123 mm in standard length (SL). The smallest mature female was estimated to be ca. 130 mm SL from the analysis of gonadosomatic index (GSI) and histological observations of gonads. The breeding season was estimated to be from June to December according to monthly changes in female GSI, histological observations of gonads, and monthly changes in the occurrence of brooding males. The number of eggs in the male brood pouch ranged from 75 to 241 (mean ± SD: 152 ± 52, n = 22). The male releases newly hatched larvae in freshwater areas. After newborns grow in the sea, they return to freshwater areas of the rivers and attain maturity. Microphis leiaspis was conformed to have an amphidromous life history. Notochord length of the released larvae was 6.1 mm, with a well-developed finfold. Larvae attained 11.1 mm SL, formation of the caudal and dorsal fin rays was complete, and the caudal fin became lozenge shaped at 30 days after the release, and juveniles reached 36.0 mm SL at 63 days after release. In the period between 30 and 63 days after the release, formation of all fins except the pectoral fins was completed, and caudal fin rays were extended and sector shaped with deep slits between each fin ray. The morphology of the released larvae of M. leiaspis is similar to that of Gastrophori species, and the morphology of juveniles similar to other species of Microphis.  相似文献

The development of all osteological elements, except scales, of the Japanese sardine,Sardinops melanostictus, is described from newly-hatched larvae to adult fishes. Newly-hatched larvae lacked osteological elements. Part of the head skeleton began to develop in 53 hour old larvae (4.2 mm in notochord length [NL]). Larvae at the first-feeding stage (77 hours, 5.5 mm NL) possessed several elements of the head skeleton and pectoral fin supports. In a 10.5 mm NL specimen, part of the caudal and dorsal fin supports were apparent. The centra appeared in specimens 18–22.7 mm in standard length (SL). Gill rakers were first observed in the lower branchial arches at 13 mm NL and spine-like processes with spiny nodules from about 25 mm SL. The distance between the predorsal and first dorsal proximal radial relative to SL rapidly decreased with forward translocation of the dorsal fin and became constant beyond approximately 34 mm SL. At this stage, most basic osteological elements were established. Completion of the osteological structure was characterized by the disappearance of the dentary teeth at 60–70 mm SL. Based on the osteological development, ontogenetic intervals consisting of four periods and eight phases were recognized.  相似文献

Larval and juvenile stages of kurosoi,Sebastes schlegeli, are described and illustrated from wild specimens. Some ecological aspects of larvae and juveniles are also described. Notochord flexion occurred between 5.6–7.5 mm SL. Transformation occurred between 13–20 mm SL. Preflexion and flexion larvae ofS. schlegeli can be distinguished from similar larvae by the pigmentation of the dorsal and ventral midlines of the tail and absence of pigmentation on the ventral portion of the rectum. After notochord flexion, the dorsal and lateral regions in both larvae and pelagic juveniles were heavily pigmented, suggesting adaptation for neustonic life style. Larvae and juveniles were caught at many coastal stations, but did not occur in cooler offshore waters. Larvae smaller than 20 mm SL inhabited surface waters. Until ca. 40 mm SL, juveniles inhabited mainly surface waters (without drifting seaweed), but also used other habitats, such as the drifting seaweed, and near the sea bed. Small larvae (<7 mm SL) fed mainly on copepod nauplii. Larger larvae fed on calanoid copepodites andEvadne nordmanni. Pelagic juveniles fed mainly on fish eggs, with fish larvae also being important food items for some individuals. Most food items taken by juveniles that were associated with drifting seaweed were eggs with attaching filaments (Cololabis saira andHyporhamphus sajori), suggesting that the high density of such food items both attracts and keeps juveniles around drifting seaweed.  相似文献

Reduction in sea ice due to climate change is expected to have a negative impact on habitat availability for Arctic marine fishes and induce range expansion of species from southern environments. Such an effect will likely be observed in the abundance of polar cod, Boreogadus saida (Lepechin, 1774), as well as interspecific interactions of this intermediate-level trophic taxon, particularly in more southerly fringing seas in the Arctic. Polar cod and capelin, Mallotus villosus (Müller, 1776), are pelagic, planktivorous forage fishes, which occupy similar dietary niches and are the primary prey of marine predators. Co-occurring polar cod and capelin were collected at seven stations in Darnley Bay, NT, during August 2013. Standard length (SL), used as a proxy for age, suggested that polar cod (mean ± 1 SD: 71.1 ± 10.3 mm) were predominantly age 1+ and capelin (96.2 ± 13.4 mm) were mostly age 2+. Stomach content analyses indicated that both species feed extensively on calanoid copepods (Calanus hyperboreus, C. glacialis, Metridia longa) and amphipods (Themisto libellula). There was high dietary overlap between capelin and polar cod, evidenced by Schoener’s index (0.80). Additionally the quantity of dietary items, biomass and energetic content consumed differed among size classes in both capelin (SL, 70.5–132.0 mm) and polar cod (SL, 42.1–114.4 mm). This study illustrates that the diets of these sympatric forage fishes in an Arctic ecosystem are very similar, indicating a high potential for interspecific competition as the sub-Arctic capelin expands its range into Arctic regions with climate change.  相似文献

A new deepwater assfish, Bassozetus nielseni sp. nov., is described from 29 specimens [147–615 mm in standard length (SL)] collected from the North Atlantic and West Indian oceans. It is distinguished from 13 congeners by the following combination of characters: dorsal-fin rays 122–129, long rakers on first gill arch 11–14, oblique scales 20–25, abdominal vertebrae 13–14, head length 18.1–21.3 % SL, body depth at anal-fin origin 8.2–14.6 % SL, predorsal length 16.4–20.1 % SL, tail length 62.7–68.0 % SL, posterior tip of pelvic-fin rays anterior to anus, a single median basibranchial tooth patch, dorsal margin of sagittal otolith smooth, and fins pale yellowish brown (preserved condition).  相似文献

The present study provides the length–weight (LW) and length–length (LL) relationships for two goby species, Neogobius caspius and Proterorhinus nasalis, which were captured in the southern Caspian Sea. Total length (TL) and standard length (SL) were determined as well as weight. Specimens were collected monthly from September 2014 to August 2015 by beach seine (mesh size 10 mm). The LW parameter b for these species was 3.17 and 2.99, respectively, with a high coefficient of determination (r2 > .95). All LLRs were highly correlated (r2 > .97). Both species had no previous LWR and LLR estimates in FishBase.  相似文献

Synopsis The vulnerability of white perch, Morone americana, larvae to yearling bluegill, Lepomis macrochira, predators was examined in relation to larval size, nutritional condition and relative abundance of alternative prey. Short-term (15 min) predation trials were conducted in 381 tanks in the laboratory. Larval vulnerability was measured as the proportion of larvae killed and the proportion of successful attacks per predator in each 15 min trial. No significant differences in vulnerability were apparent among larvae regardless of feeding history at sizes < 6 mm SL. At larval lengths > 6 mm SL, size of larvae was the crucial determinant of their vulnerability. Percentage of larvae killed in 15 min was nearly 100% at sizes < 6 mm SL, decreased to 30% at a length of 12.0 mm SL and dropped to 18% at 14.0 mm SL. Larvae initially feeding at low food levels for 2–4 d exhibited decreased growth of 13–25% over the first 3 wks of life, and simulations based on laboratory results indicated that these growth deficits could result in 5- to 68-fold decreases in survivorship at 38 days after hatching (DAH). The relative abundance of alternative prey also had a pronounced effect on mortality of larvae. A 10-fold increase in alternative prey (Daphnia magna) abundance decreased bluegill predation rates on white perch larvae by 10–20%, while a 100-fold increase in Daphnia density decreased larval mortality by 75–90%.  相似文献

The growth and survival of larvae can be significantly enhanced through close association with patches of high prey concentration. However, the taxis and kinesis responses used by larvae to locate and maintain residence in micro-patches remains poorly understood. In this study, the behavioral responses of Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) and walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma) larvae (45–100 dph) to light, prey scent, and prey were examined. Both species displayed an ontogenetic shift in response to a horizontal light gradient, with small larvae (11–13 mm SL) exhibiting a positive phototaxis and large larvae (23–32 mm SL) exhibiting a negative phototaxis. Whether this reversal is related to ontogenetically appropriate foraging cues or some other aspect of the environment remains to be determined. Neither species displayed significant behavioral responsiveness to the introduction of olfactory prey cues at either size. The aggregating (taxis) response of large larvae to introduction of live prey was stronger than that of small larvae, possibly due to increased reaction distances and encounter rates. In addition, both species exhibited a kinesis response of reducing the frequency of swimming bouts in response to introduction of live prey. These results suggest that the scale of prey patchiness and the physical factors that determine patch encounter rates are a significant determinant of larval growth and survival in the early feeding stages of marine fishes.  相似文献

Early life stages of Artedidraco skottsbergi and A. shackletoni were collected off Adélie Land. The morphology and pigmentation pattern of nine larvae and juveniles of A. skottsbergi between 17.2 and 21.4 mm in standard length (SL), and of two juveniles of A. shackletoni measuring 25.1 mm SL were described. A. skottsbergi was characterized by a heavily pigmented body, except for the caudal peduncle, with distinctively dense pigmentation on the ventrolateral half of the body and caudal section (17.2–17.9 mm SL). Furthermore, they had no pigmentation on the pectoral fin base until they attained 21.4 mm SL. Juvenile A. shackletoni had a heavily pigmented body except for the ventral side of the abdomen and the anal fin base. The proximal part of the dorsal fin and most of the anal fin were covered with melanophores. Although knowledge of larval and juvenile Artedidraco species is limited, the distribution of melanophores on the fins, pectoral fin base and caudal peduncle at each developmental stage may be useful for species identification.  相似文献

The food base and stomach contents of stocked sea trout (Salmo trutta) fry were determined in the first 4 months (April–August 2010) of life in two small lowland streams after resorption of the yolk sac. In each stream, 600 individual trout were released in a 200 m stocking‐section. The macrozoobenthos given as a food base for the fry were collected once a month from the streams using a bottom scraper. Three subsamples of macrozoobentos were considered as one sample from the stocking‐section. On the same day, 50 stocked fry were captured in each stream using electric fishing gear. Preferred food components were usually the taxa represented by number in a given stream in a particular month. Width size range of the prey in fish stomachs in May was from 0.10 to 1.47 mm, and from 0.11 to 3.78 mm in August. All food items found in both streams during the study months were also represented in intensity in the fish: Cyclopoida, and larvae of Baetidae and Chironomidae. Almost all Helodidae and Simuliidae larvae as well as the majority of Limoniidae and Nemouridae larvae were available as food each month.  相似文献

Development of swimming and feeding abilities based on morphological development of larval and early juvenileChanos chanos was investigated. In larvae smaller than about 6.5 mm SL, mechanical supports of fins and branchial arches were in a primordial stage of development. Supports and rays of the vertical fins and branchial arches rapidly developed from 6.5 mm SL, and all components appeared by about 10.5 mm SL. Thereafter body depth proportion changed and the supports and rays of the paired fins and gill-rakers developed. These developmental events were nearly or totally completed by about 17 mm SL, and we concluded that the larvae transformed to juveniles at this size. By this time, the mode of swimming of the fish shifted from undulating locomotion to caudal propulsion and that of feeding from swallowing paniculate food to filtering and concentrating substrate food matters using gill-rakers and the epibranchial organ. One of the most characteristic, and well-known, phenomena in the life history ofChanos chanos is the mass occurrence in the surf zone of postlarvae of a limited size range. In view of the scheme of the development of mechanical supports of the body and fins, they may acquire a swimming ability strong enough to move against the current only upon reaching about 10.5 mm SL, and if active shoreward migration of the larvae occurs, it is only during the late period of their journey from the spawning grounds to the shore. The sudden disappearance from the surf zone of larvae larger than 15–16 mm SL is obviously related to a change in food habit.  相似文献
