Differences in acclimation to elevated growth CO2 (700 μmol mol−1, EC) and elevated temperature (ambient +4 °C, ET) in successive leaves of wheat were investigated in field chambers. At a common measurement CO2, EC increased photosynthesis and the quantum yield of electron transport (Φ) early on in the growth of penultimate leaves, and later decreased them. In contrast, EC did not change photosynthesis, and increased Φ at later growth stages in the flag leaf. Contents of chlorophyll (Chl), ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBPCO), and total soluble protein were initially higher and subsequently lower in penultimate than flag leaves. EC decreased RuBPCO protein content relative to soluble protein and Chl contents throughout the development of penultimate leaves. On the other hand, EC initially increased the RuBPCO:Chl and Chl a/b ratios, but later decreased them in flag leaves. In the flag leaves but not in the penultimate leaves, ET initially decreased initial and specific RuBPCO activities at ambient CO2 (AC) and increased them at EC. Late in leaf growth, ET decreased Chl contents under AC in both kinds of leaves, and had no effect or a positive one under EC. Thus the differences between the two kinds of leaves were due to resource availability, and to EC-increased allocation of resources to photon harvesting in the penultimate leaves, but to increased allocation to carboxylation early on in growth, and to light harvesting subsequently, in the flag leaves.  相似文献

In order to explore ontogenetic variation in leaf-level physiological traits of Betula pendula trees, we measured changes in mass- (A mass) and area-based (A area) net photosynthesis under light-saturated conditions, mass- (RSmass) and area-based (RSarea) leaf respiration, relative growth rate, leaf mass per area (LMA), total nonstructural carbohydrates (TNC), and macro- and micronutrient concentrations. Expanding leaves maintained high rates of A area, but due to high growth respiration rates, net CO2 fixation occurred only at irradiances >200 μmol photons m–2 s–1. We found that full structural leaf development is not a necessary prerequisite for maintaining positive CO2 balance in young birch leaves. Maximum rates of A area were realized in late June and early July, whereas the highest values of A mass occurred in May and steadily declined thereafter. The maintenance respiration rate averaged ≈8 nmol CO2 g–1 s–1, whereas growth respiration varied between 0 and 65 nmol CO2 g–1 s–1. After reaching its lowest point in mid-June, leaf respiration increased gradually until the end of the growing season. Mass and area-based dark respiration were significantly positively correlated with LMA at stages of leaf maturity, and senescence. Concentrations of P and K decreased during leaf development and stabilized or increased during maturity, and concentrations of immobile elements such as Ca, Mn and B increased throughout the growing season. Identification of interrelations between leaf development, CO2 exchange, TNC and leaf nutrients allowed us to define factors related to ontogenetic variation in leaf-level physiological traits and can be helpful in establishing periods appropriate for sampling birch leaves for diagnostic purposes such as assessment of plant and site productivity or effects of biotic or abiotic factors. Yellow-green foliage cultivars of four vegetables grown outdoors, i.e., Chinese mustard (Brassica rapa), Chinese kale (Brassica oleracea var. alboglabra), sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) and Chinese amaranth (Amaranthus tricolor), had lower chlorophyll (Chl) (a+b) (29–36% of green cultivars of the same species), total carotenoids (46–62%) and ascorbate (72–90%) contents per leaf area. Furthermore, yellow-green cultivars had smaller photosystem II (PSII) antenna size (65–70%) and lower photosynthetic capacity (52–63%), but higher Chl a/b (107–156%) and from low (60%) to high (129%) ratios of de-epoxidized xanthophyll cycle pigments per Chl a content. Potential quantum efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm) of all overnight dark-adapted leaves was ca. 0.8, with no significant difference between yellow-green and green cultivars of the same species. However, yellow-green cultivars displayed a higher degree of photoinhibition (lower Fv/Fm after illumination) when they were exposed to high irradiance. Although vegetables used in this study are of either temperate or tropical origin and include both C3 and C4 plants, data from all cultivars combined revealed that Fv/Fm after illumination still showed a significant positive linear regression with xanthophyll cycledependent energy quenching (qE) and a negative linear regression with photoinhibitory quenching (qI). Fv/Fm was, however, not correlated with nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ). Yet, a higher degree of photoinhibition in yellow-green cultivars could recover during the night darkness period, suggesting that the repair of PSII in yellow-green cultivars would allow them to grow normally in the field.  相似文献

The effects of elevated growth temperature (ambient + 3.5°C) and CO2 (700 μmol mol−1) on leaf photosynthesis, pigments and chlorophyll fluorescence of a boreal perennial grass (Phalaris arundinacea L.) under different water regimes (well watered to water shortage) were investigated. Layer-specific measurements were conducted on the top (younger leaf) and low (older leaf) canopy positions of the plants after anthesis. During the early development stages, elevated temperature enhanced the maximum rate of photosynthesis (P max) of the top layer leaves and the aboveground biomass, which resulted in earlier senescence and lower photosynthesis and biomass at the later periods. At the stage of plant maturity, the content of chlorophyll (Chl), leaf nitrogen (NL), and light response of effective photochemical efficiency (ΦPSII) and electron transport rate (ETR) was significantly lower under elevated temperature than ambient temperature in leaves at both layers. CO2 enrichment enhanced the photosynthesis but led to a decline of NL and Chl content, as well as lower fluorescence parameters of ΦPSII and ETR in leaves at both layers. In addition, the down-regulation by CO2 elevation was significant at the low canopy position. Regardless of climate treatment, the water shortage had a strongly negative effect on the photosynthesis, biomass growth, and fluorescence parameters, particularly in the leaves from the low canopy position. Elevated temperature exacerbated the impact of water shortage, while CO2 enrichment slightly alleviated the drought-induced adverse effects on P max. We suggest that the light response of ΦPSII and ETR, being more sensitive to leaf-age classes, reflect the photosynthetic responses to climatic treatments and drought stress better than the fluorescence parameters under dark adaptation.  相似文献

Many studies have shown that root–shoot imbalance influences vegetative growth and development of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), but few have examined changes in leaf senescence and endogenous hormones due to stem girdling. The objective of this study was to determine the correlation between some endogenous phytohormones, particularly cytokinins and abscisic acid (ABA), and leaf senescence following stem girdling. Field-grown cotton plants were girdled on the main stem 5 days after squaring (DAS), while the non-girdled plants served as control. Plant biomass, seed cotton yield, main-stem leaf photosynthetic (Pn) rate, chlorophyll (Chl) and malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations, as well as levels of cytokinins and ABA in main-stem leaves and xylem sap were determined after girdling or at harvest. Main-stem girdling decreased the dry root weight and root/shoot ratio from 5 to 70 days after girdling (DAG) and reduced seed cotton yield at harvest. Main-stem leaf Pn and Chl concentration in girdled plants were significantly lower than in control plants. Much higher levels of MDA were observed in main-stem leaves from 5 to 70 DAG, suggesting that stem girdling accelerated leaf senescence. Girdled plants contained less trans-zeatin and its riboside (t-Z + t-ZR), dihydrozeatin and its riboside (DHZ + DHZR), and isopentenyladenine and its riboside (iP + iPA), but more ABA than control plants in both main-stem leaves and xylem sap. These results suggested that main-stem girdling accelerated leaf senescence due to reduced levels of cytokinin and/or increased ABA. Cytokinin and ABA are involved in leaf senescence following main-stem girdling.  相似文献

Radish (Raphanus sativus L.) plants were grown in a greenhouse in soil at natural illumination, temperature, and CO2 concentration. A relationship between the activity of soluble carbonic anhydrase (sCA) and the content of soluble carbohydrates (sCH) was investigated depending on leaf position on the stem during plant development. Indices characterizing leaf ageing during the phase of vegetative growth (PVG) (in lower leaves as compared to upper ones) were a decrease in the rate of photosynthetic release of O2, photosynthetic efficiency, quantum efficiency of photosystem II, and the content of chlorophylls a and b. During PVG and the phase of flower bud formation, the activity of sCA and the contents of sCH, soluble protein, and Glu were the greatest in young (topmost) leaves and declined in the leaves of middle and lower storeys. From the top to the middle leaves, a dependence of sCA activity on the content of Glu or other sCH (without Glu) was direct, whereas, from the middle and the lower leaves, it became inversed. During leaf ageing in vegetatively growing plants and in the phase of budding, the relation between sCA and a relative content of Glu (percent of the rest sCH) was similar to that described above and yielded broken lines, and, during flowering, an inverse relation was observed in the leaves of all three storeys with a low content content of Glu and a low sCA activity. In order to study a dependence of sCA activity on the levels of sCH and Glu during PVG, one half of the leaf was incubated in a thin layer of water at a light schedule: by 12 h of night/day/night + 3-h-long illumination (control material). Within the period of active growth of the hypocotyl up to the storage root formation, the sCA activity and the content of sCH in the leaves incubated in water (control) increased. During a later PVG, both characteristics declined with sCA activity reduced stronger. The rate of the photosynthetic O2 release changed in accordance with the changes in sCA activity. Incubation of the other half of the same leaf in 20 mM Glu during early PVG brought about a considerable increase in sCA activity as compared with control material. During a later PVG and at a much greater Glu concentration (330 mM), its content in the leaves increased manifold; however, there were no significant changes in the activity of sCA, the content of protein or chlorophyll. It was concluded that the activity of sCA in the radish leaves during PVG was not regulated by the absolute content of sCH or Glu in the leaves but depended on endogenous factors associated with plant development.  相似文献

Exclusion of UV (280–380 nm) radiation from the solar spectrum can be an important tool to assess the impact of ambient UV radiation on plant growth and performance of crop plants. The effect of exclusion of UV-B and UV-A from solar radiation on the growth and photosynthetic components in soybean (Glycine max) leaves were investigated. Exclusion of solar UV-B and UV-B/A radiation, enhanced the fresh weight, dry weight, leaf area as well as induced a dramatic increase in plant height, which reflected a net increase in biomass. Dry weight increase per unit leaf area was quite significant upon both UV-B and UV-B/A exclusion from the solar spectrum. However, no changes in chlorophyll a and b contents were observed by exclusion of solar UV radiation but the content of carotenoids was significantly (34–46%) lowered. Analysis of chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence transient parameters of leaf segments suggested no change in the F v/F m value due to UV-B or UV-B/A exclusion. Only a small reduction in photo-oxidized signal I (P700+)/unit Chl was noted. Interestingly the total soluble protein content per unit leaf area increased by 18% in UV-B/A and 40% in UV-B excluded samples, suggesting a unique upregulation of biosynthesis and accumulation of biomass. Solar UV radiation thus seems to primarily affect the photomorphogenic regulatory system that leads to an enhanced growth of leaves and an enhanced rate of net photosynthesis in soybean, a crop plant of economic importance. The presence of ultra-violet components in sunlight seems to arrest carbon sequestration in plants. An erratum to this article can be found at  相似文献

Photosynthetic parameters, growth, and pigment contents were determined during expansion of the fourth leaf of in vitro photoautotrophically cultured Nicotiana tabacum L. plants at three irradiances [photosynthetically active radiation (400–700 nm): low, LI 60 μmol m−2 s−1; middle, MI 180 μmol m−2 s−1; and high, HI 270 μmol m−2 s−1]. During leaf expansion, several symptoms usually accompanying leaf senescence appeared very early in HI and then in MI plants. Symptoms of senescence in developing leaves were: decreasing chlorophyll (Chl) a+b content and Chl a/b ratio, decreasing both maximum (FV/FM) and actual (ΦPS2) photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2, and increasing non-photochemical quenching. Nevertheless, net photosynthetic oxygen evolution rate (P N) did not decrease consistently with decrease in Chl content, but exhibited a typical ontogenetic course with gradual increase. P N reached its maximum before full leaf expansion and then tended to decline. Thus excess irradiance during in vitro cultivation did not cause early start of leaf senescence, but impaired photosynthetic performance and Chl content in leaves and changed their typical ontogenetic course.  相似文献

The differences in pigment levels, photosynthetic activity and the chlorophyll fluorescence decrease ratio R Fd (as indicator of photosynthetic rates) of green sun and shade leaves of three broadleaf trees (Platanus acerifolia Willd., Populus alba L., Tilia cordata Mill.) were compared. Sun leaves were characterized by higher levels of total chlorophylls a + b and total carotenoids x + c as well as higher values for the weight ratio chlorophyll (Chl) a/b (sun leaves 3.23–3.45; shade leaves: 2.74–2.81), and lower values for the ratio chlorophylls to carotenoids (a + b)/(x + c) (with 4.44–4.70 in sun leaves and 5.04–5.72 in shade leaves). Sun leaves exhibited higher photosynthetic rates P N on a leaf area basis (mean of 9.1–10.1 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1) and Chl basis, which correlated well with the higher values of stomatal conductance G s (range 105–180 mmol m−2 s−1), as compared to shade leaves (G s range 25–77 mmol m−2 s−1; P N: 3.2–3.7 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1). The higher photosynthetic rates could also be detected via imaging the Chl fluorescence decrease ratio R Fd, which possessed higher values in sun leaves (2.8–3.0) as compared to shade leaves (1.4–1.8). In addition, via R Fd images it was shown that the photosynthetic activity of the leaves of all trees exhibits a large heterogeneity across the leaf area, and in general to a higher extent in sun leaves than in shade leaves.  相似文献

Aspects of plant growth such as height, branch number, leaf number, leaf area, pod area, 100-seed mass, etc., were correlated with biochemical changes such as contents of chlorophyll (Chl), proteins, DNA, and RNA, and protease activity during development and senescent phases in leaves, flowers, and pods of Cajanus cajan L. cv. UPAS-120 after treatments with kinetin (Kn). A significant increase was noticed in branch number, leaf number, leaf area, and seed mass while other growth processes registered a small increase after Kn application. Effectiveness of 5 μM Kn was also noticed in minimizing the loss of Chls, proteins, and nucleic acids as well as reducing the protease activity during maturity and senescence. Chl a/b ratio maintained a high value up to 30-d followed by a decline in leaves while flowers registered much lower ratio at 20-d-age. Pods were unique in having relatively lower ratio of Chl a/b in comparison to leaves.  相似文献

Twenty eight-day old plants of two spring wheat cultivars differing in salinity tolerance were subjected to varying levels of nitrogen (56, 112, and 224 mg N·kg−1 soil) for 42 days. Both cultivars performed differently under varying soil N levels in terms of growth, and grain yield and yield components. Nitrogen levels, 112 and 224 mg·kg−1 soil, caused maximal growth in Sarsabz and Barani-83, respectively. Cv Sarsabz maintained higher leaf water and turgor potentials, but lower leaf osmotic potential than those of Barani-83 at all external N regimes. Sarsabz had higher Chl a, Chl b and carotenoids contents in leaves than those in Barani-83 at 56 and 112 mg N·kg−1 soil. Sarsabz had higher contents of leaf soluble proteins, soluble sugars, and free amino acids than those in Barani-83 at all external N levels. In Barani-83 net CO2 assimilation rate remained almost unchanged, whereas in Sarsabz it decreased consistently with increase in external N level. The better growth performance of Sarsabaz as compared to Barani-83 under varying soil N levels except 224 mg N·kg−1 soil was associated with maintenance of high leaf turgor potential but not with net CO2 assimilation rate.  相似文献

An early senescence (es) mutant of rice Oryza sativa L. with progressing death of most of leaves before heading stage was identified in the field in Hainan province. After tillering stage, the brown striations were found in the base of green leaves randomly, and then expanded to whole leaves. No fungi, bacteria, and viruses were detected in the brown striations suggesting that it was a genetic mutant. The ultrastructure of leaf cells at the site of brown striations showed breakdown of chloroplast thylakoid membrane structures and other organelles, and condensation of the cytoplasm at severe senescence stage. The photosynthetic activity and chlorophyll (Chl) contents decreased irreversibly along with leaf senescence process.  相似文献

In an 18 year old Japanese larch stand, leaf characteristics such as area, weight, gross photosynthetic rate and respiration rate were studied in order to obtain basic information on estimating canopy photosynthesis and respiration. The leaf growth courses in area and weight from bud opening were approximated by simple logistic curves. The growth coefficient for the area growth curve was 0.155–0.175 day−1, while that for the weight growth was 0.112–0.117 day−1. The larger growth coefficient in area growth caused the seasonal change in specific leaf area (SLA) that increased after bud opening to its peak early in May at almost 300 cm2 g−1 and then decreased until it leveled off at about 140 cm2g−1. The change inSLA indicates the possibility that leaf area growth precedes leaf thickness growth. The relationship between the coefficientsa andb of the gross photosynthetic rate (p)-light flux density (1) curve (p=bI/(1+aI)) and the mean relative light flux density (I′/I 0) at each canopy height were approximated by hyperbolic formulae:a=A/(I′/I 0)+B andb=C/(I′/I 0)+D. Leaf respiration rate was also increased with increasingI′/I 0. Seasonal change of gross photosynthetic rate and leaf respiration rate were related to mean air temperature through linear regression on semilogarithmic co-ordinates.  相似文献

Leaf and canopy photosynthesis of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) declines as the crop approaches cutout, just as the assimilate needs for reproductive growth are peaking. Our objective with this study was to determine whether this decline is due to remobilization of leaf components to support the reproductive growth or due to some cue from the changing environmental conditions during the growing season. Field studies were conducted in 1995–1996 at Stoneville, Mississippi, using six cotton genotypes and two planting dates (early and late), which produced two distinctly different cotton populations reaching cutout at different times. Among the six genotypes were a photoperiod sensitive line (non-flowering) and its counter part which had photoperiod insensitive genes backcrossed four times to the photoperiod sensitive line (flowering). This pair was used to assess the degree that the photosynthetic decline could be attributed to reproductive sink development. Leaf CO2-exchange rate (CER) and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence measurements were taken in mid-August, a period corresponding to cutout for the early planted plots, and those leaves were collected. Leaf Chl level, soluble protein level, various soluble carbohydrate levels and Rubisco activities were assayed on those leaves. Averaged across years, leaf CER and soluble protein levels were reduced approximately 14% and 18%, respectively, for the early planted compared to the late planted cotton. Neither leaf Chl levels or Chl fluorescence Fv/Fm values for Photosystem II yield were altered by the planting date. In 1996, leaves from the non-flowering line had 12% greater Chl and 20% greater soluble protein levels than the flowering line. However, in 1996, the CER of the early planted non-flowering line was reduced 10% compared to the late planted. Although remobilization of leaf N to reproductive growth appears to be the principle component causing the cutout photosynthetic decline, the data also indicate that environmental factors can play a small role in causing the decline. Seedlings of Camellia sinensis were grown hydroponically for 30 d in order to study the effect of fluorine (F) on growth parameters, antioxidant defence system, photosynthesis and leaf ultrastructure. Fresh and dry mass, chlorophyll (Chl) content and net photosynthetic rate (PN) decreased with increasing F concentration. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity decreased significantly, catalase (CAT) and guaiacol peroxidase (GPX) activities reached maximun under 0.21 and 0.32 mM F, respectively. Proline, malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) contents increased significantly. These results suggested, that antioxidant defence system of leaves did not sufficiently scavenge excessive reactive oxygen species. The cell ultrastructure was not changed under 0.11–0.21 mM F, however, it was destroyed at 0.32–0.53 mM F. So tea plants tolerated F in concentration less than 0.32 mM.  相似文献

Gross photosynthetic capacity (P G ) of greenhouse-grown tomato plants (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) decreased as the leaf aged. The P G of the 10th, 15th and 18th leaves from the top was only 76, 37, and 18 % of P G of the 5th leaf, respectively. Quantum yield (Y Q ) and dark respiration rate (R D ) were also lower in older leaves than in the younger ones. Net photosynthetic rate (P G ) was apparent in young fruits (about 10 g FM) or young petioles but no P N was found in large fruits (40 g or more FM) and stems because of high R D . Both P G and R D were lower in older fruits and petioles or in lower parts of the stem compared to the younger ones or upper parts of stem. A sharp decrease in chlorophyll (Chl) content was only measured in the senescing 18th leaf. The Chl content in petioles, stems and fruits was proportional to P G . Decreases in P G of older leaves were attributed to decreases in content rather than activity of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBPCO) since soluble protein content was lower in older leaves than in the younger ones but the specific activity (activity per unit of protein) of RuBPCO was not so. The estimated values of P N of the 10th, 15th and 18th leaves inside the canopy were only 50, 21, and 7 % of that in the 5th leaf. Therefore, leaves below the 18th can be removed in order to ensure a good air circulation and prevent diseases. The significance of photosynthesis in fruit, stem and petioles is not negligible because photosynthesis re-fixes the respired CO2. Australian carnivorous pitcher plant Cephalotus follicularis Labill. produces two types of leaves. During the spring time, the plant produces a foliage type of noncarnivorous leaf called lamina. Later, the second type of leaf is produced — carnivorous pitcher. Using simultaneous measurements of gas exchange and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence photosynthetic efficiency of these two distinct forms of leaves were compared. In addition stomatal density, an important component of gas exchange, and Chl concentration were also determined. Pitcher trap had lower net photosynthetic rate (P N) in comparison to noncarnivorous lamina, whereas the rate of respiration (R D) was not significantly different. This was in accordance with lower stomatal density and Chl concentration in the pitcher trap. On the other hand maximum quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm) and effective quantum yield of photochemical energy conversion in PSII (ΦPSII) was not significantly different. Nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) was significantly higher in the lamina at higher irradiance. These data are in accordance with hypothesis that changing the leaf shape in carnivorous plants to make it a better trap generally makes it less efficient at photosynthesis. However, the pitcher of Cephalotus had much higher P N than it was expected from the data set of the genus Nepenthes. Because it is not possible to optimize for contrasting function such as photosynthesis and carnivory, it is hypothesized that Cephalotus pitchers are less elaborated for carnivorous function than the pitchers of Nepenthes.  相似文献

A field experiment was conducted to investigate the changes in chlorophyll (Chl) and nitrogen (N) contents, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBPCO) and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) contents and PEPC activity, and the photon-saturated net photosynthetic rate (P Nsat), and their relationships with leaf senescence in two maize hybrids with different senescent appearance. One stay-green (cv. P3845) and one earlier senescent (cv. Hokkou 55) hybrid were used in this study, and we found that Chl and N contents and the P Nsat in individual leaves of P3845 were greater than those in corresponding leaves of Hokkou 55 at the successive growth stages. In addition, larger contents of RuBPCO and PEPC, and a greater activity of PEPC were observed in P3845. Due to the lower rates of decrease of Chl, RuBPCO, and PEPC amounts per unit of N, and the lower net C translocation rate per unit of N in the stay-green hybrid, leaf senescence was delayed in comparison to the earlier senescent hybrid.  相似文献
