A representative paleoenvironmental reconstruction of continental middle latitude from ca. 2 my to the upper part of Middle Pleistocene (279 ± 77 ky) was obtained from the carbon and oxygen stable isotopes analyzed in ostracode shells (Cyprideis torosa) recovered in the Guadix-Baza Basin (SE Spain), an intramontaneous closed depression filled by alluvial and lacustrine sediments. This study was performed along a 356-m-thick composite section, dated previously by paleomagnetism and the amino acid racemization method. δ13C and δ18O profiles reflected changes in temperature, the evaporation/infill ratio in the water bodies and the amount of rain. δ13C is also affected by changes in plant biomass: periods with high δ13C and δ18O values are associated with warm and dry regimes, and with less vegetation, which, in some cases, coincide with the development of displacive gypsum crystals, whereas low δ13C and δ18O values correlate with cold and humid episodes, which cause more vegetation biomass and, therefore, increasing the input of isotopically light carbon. Intermediate δ18O values are linked to temperate dry or humid episodes when they coincide with high or low δ13C values, respectively. 86 paleoclimatic events were distinguished in the Pleistocene record from the δ13C and δ18O profiles. From both the statistical analysis of the geochemical data and the geological observations, four Cold and Humid Long Periods (low δ18O) and four Warm and Dry Long Periods (high δ18O) were defined. This differs with respect to the paleoclimatological behavior established for the Northern Hemisphere where during cold periods (glacial), no water was available while permafrost conditions persisted, whereas in warm episodes (interglacial), higher precipitation rates occurred. Good correspondences between the Guadix-Baza Basin paleoclimatic record and a marine oxygen-isotope sequence, two continental cores and other long Mediterranean paleoenvironmental records (pollen sequences from Israel) were found, which suggested that climate changes in the Guadix-Baza Basin were in tune with global climatic changes.  相似文献

Diatoms are well preserved in partly laminated Holocene and late Pleistocene sediments on the upper continental slope of central Peru. Accumulation rates of diatom species previously recognized as tropical (oceanic, warm water) and subtropical (neritic, cooler water, upwelling) changed markedly downcore in Kasten cores obtained at 11°15′S, 12°58′S, and 13°37′S latitude. Subtropical species (e.g., Thalassiosira eccentrica “group”, Thalassiothrix frauenfeldii, Chaetoceros spp. resting spores, Delphineis spp.) predominated in late Pleistocene sediments of the two southern cores. A mix of tropical and subtropical diatom assemblages occurred in latest Pleistocene sediments, while tropical species (e.g., Coscinodiscus nodulifer/radiatus, Pseudoeunotia doliolus, Thalassionema nitzschioides var. parva) predominated in the late Holocene sediments. In the northern core latest Pleistocene sediments also contained a mix of tropical and subtropical species. Similarly, late Holocene sediments contained predominately tropical species of diatoms. Neoglacial periods (200–400 yr B.P., 2000–2700 yr B.P.), however, were sometimes characterized by a greater abundance of subtropical species and punctuated periodically with blooms of Skeletonema costatum and Rhizosolenia shrubsolei. It is proposed that during times of Southern Hemisphere cooling, Peruvian coastal waters north of 12°S were subjected to episodic mixing with warmer water masses before being overwhelmed by tropical waters that may have either passed southward across a weakened Equatorial Front or arose from intensified offshore countercurrents. Coastal waters south of 12°S latitude were probably unaffected by the tropical influence. Rather, these waters may have undergone intensified upwelling during the last Glacial epoch.  相似文献

Microbially mediated arsenic release from Holocene and Pleistocene Cambodian aquifer sediments was investigated using microcosm experiments and substrate amendments. In the Holocene sediment, the metabolically active bacteria, including arsenate‐respiring bacteria, were determined by DNA stable‐isotope probing. After incubation with 13C‐acetate and 13C‐lactate, active bacterial community in the Holocene sediment was dominated by different Geobacter spp.‐related 16S rRNA sequences. Substrate addition also resulted in the enrichment of sequences related to the arsenate‐respiring Sulfurospirillum spp. 13C‐acetate selected for ArrA related to Geobacter spp. whereas 13C‐lactate selected for ArrA which were not closely related to any cultivated organism. Incubation of the Pleistocene sediment with lactate favoured a 16S rRNA‐phylotype related to the sulphate‐reducing Desulfovibrio oxamicus DSM1925, whereas the ArrA sequences clustered with environmental sequences distinct from those identified in the Holocene sediment. Whereas limited As(III) release was observed in Pleistocene sediment after lactate addition, no arsenic mobilization occurred from Holocene sediments, probably because of the initial reduced state of As, as determined by X‐ray Absorption Near Edge Structure. Our findings demonstrate that in the presence of reactive organic carbon, As(III) mobilization can occur in Pleistocene sediments, having implications for future strategies that aim to reduce arsenic contamination in drinking waters by using aquifers containing Pleistocene sediments.  相似文献

Two sediment cores up to 42 m in length were raised from the wide, deep, section of the lower Tapajós River, Amazonia, referred to as Lago Tapajós. These cores reveal a history of subtle environmental change that began with the formation of Lago Tapajós as sea level rose about 11,000 years ago. The sediments of the lake were deposited fairly quickly—at a rate of ca. 4 m per millennium and are uniformly fine grained, with low organic content. The fossil pollen record derived from these sediments reveals that forest surrounded this site throughout the Holocene. The largest change in the core took place between ca. 5500 and 4200 cal. years BP and reflects a transition from coarser to finer sediments. Coincident with the change in sediment is a slight transition in the pollen spectra with an increase in Poaceae abundance at the expense of the pioneer tree Cecropia cecropia. A tentative explanation is offered in which increased human activity, possibly spurred by climatic change, resulted in the formation of some local grasslands. However, despite the apparent actions of humans, there is no indication of basin-wide transformation of landscapes in this record. The Holocene persistence of forest as the dominant landscape matrix around Lago Tapajós is supported by low δ13C values and by the constant geochemistry and mineralogy of the lake sediments.  相似文献

Recent palaeontological and sedimentological studies on the Upper Pliocene–Lower Pleistocene continental deposits of the Rieti and Tiberino basins (Latium and Umbria, Italy) showed the existence of brackish marshes influenced by the Early Pleistocene Tyrrhenian sea. The micropaleontological analyses carried out on five sections cropping out in the northern sector of the Rieti Basin and on one section cropping out in the southwestern branch of the Tiberino Basin showed the repeated alternance of two ostracod assemblages. The first is characterized by a very abundant ostracod association dominated by Cyprideis torosa, typical of brackish waters; the second one is less rich in specimens and dominated by several species of freshwater Candoninae. This alternance allowed the recognition of several changes in the water salinity that could be related to many Early Pleistocene sea-level changes. Palaeosalinities were estimated for both the Tiberino and the Rieti Basin using the morphological analysis of the shell of Cyprideis torosa (ornamentation, nodosities and percentages of sieve-type pore canals). The obtained palaeosalinity values, ranging from freshwater to oligohaline, show slightly higher salinities for the Tiberino Basin, located nearer the ancient coastline, than for the Rieti Basin.  相似文献

Recent studies have shown that ancient plankton DNA can be recovered from Holocene lacustrine and marine sediments, including from species that do not leave diagnostic microscopic fossils in the sediment record. Therefore, the analysis of this so-called fossil plankton DNA is a promising approach for refining paleoecological and paleoenvironmental information. However, further studies are needed to reveal whether DNA of past plankton is preserved beyond the Holocene. Here, we identified past eukaryotic plankton members based on 18S rRNA gene profiling in eastern Mediterranean Holocene and Pleistocene sapropels S1 (~9 ka), S3 (~80 ka), S4 (~105 ka), and S5 (~125 ka). The majority of preserved ~400- to 500-bp-long 18S rDNA fragments of microalgae that were studied in detail (i.e. from haptophyte algae and dinoflagellates) were found in the youngest sapropel S1, whereas their specific lipid biomarkers (long-chain alkenones and dinosterol) were also abundant in sediments deposited between 80 and 124 ka BP. The late-Pleistocene sediments mainly contained eukaryotic DNA of marine fungi and from terrestrial plants, which could have been introduced via the river Nile at the time of deposition and preserved in pollen grains. A parallel analysis of Branched and Isoprenoid Tetraethers (i.e. BIT index) showed that most of the organic matter in the eastern Mediterranean sediment record was of marine (e.g. pelagic) origin. Therefore, the predominance of terrestrial plant DNA over plankton DNA in older sapropels suggests a preferential degradation of marine plankton DNA.  相似文献

To trace environmental changes in water hydrology and salinity in the Late Glacial to Holocene of the Gulf of Gdańsk, a south‐eastern bay of the Baltic Sea within the maritime zone of Poland, the distribution of ostracod valves was studied in 20 sediment cores collected from both the shallow‐ and deep‐water zones (depth 10.9–67.5 m). The studied sediment sequences yielded ca. 3000 valves of 21 ostracod species, of which only five are known to live today in the Gulf, which has a present maximum depth of 118 m and water salinity up to 7–8‰. The majority of the studied sediment layers that contained ostracod valves corresponded to the period of the Late Glacial to Mid‐Holocene and was dominated by non‐marine species, of which the most common were Candona neglecta (present in 17 cores), Cytherissa lacustris (15 cores) and Candona candida (14 cores). By clustering classification five major ostracod assemblage types were recognised in the studied cores. Initial assemblage types dominated mostly by inhabitants of the profundal/sub‐littoral zones of modern oligo‐mesotrophic lakes (C. lacustris and C. neglecta) in some sediment sequences were replaced in stratigraphical order by the assemblages dominated by brackish‐water species (Cyprideis torosa or Cytheromorpha fuscata). The structure and species composition of the distinguished ostracod assemblage types as well as their successional transitions indicate that the studied sediments were deposited initially in the Late Glacial in freshwater lacustrine conditions, and subsequently, during the Holocene marine transgression, covered by marine sands. The present results confirm and consolidate inferences based on previously published data on ostracods from the western part of the Gulf of Gdańsk as well as on other biotic (molluscs, diatoms) and abiotic (seismoacoustic) indices from this area (© 2012 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Bacteriohopanoids are widespread lipid biomarkers in the sedimentary record. Many aerobic and anaerobic bacteria are potential sources of these lipids which sometimes complicates the use of these biomarkers as proxies for ecological and environmental changes. Therefore, we applied preserved 16S ribosomal RNA genes to identify likely Holocene biological sources of bacteriohopanepolyols (BHPs) in the sulfidic sediments of the permanently stratified postglacial Ace Lake, Antarctica. A suite of intact BHPs were identified, which revealed a variety of structural forms whose composition differed through the sediment core reflecting changes in bacterial populations induced by large changes in lake salinity. Stable isotopic compositions of the hopanols formed from periodic acid-cleaved BHPs, showed that some were substantially depleted in 13C, indicative of their methanotrophic origin. Using sensitive molecular tools, we found that Type I and II methanotrophic bacteria (respectively Methylomonas and Methylocystis ) were unique to the oldest lacustrine sediments (> 9400 years BP), but quantification of fossil DNA revealed that the Type I methanotrophs, including methanotrophs related to methanotrophic gill symbionts of deep-sea cold-seep mussels, were the main precursors of the 35-amino BHPs (i.e. aminopentol, -tetrol and -triols). After isolation of the lake ∼3000 years ago, one Type I methanotroph of the 'methanotrophic gill symbionts cluster' remained the most obvious source of aminotetrol and -triol. We, furthermore, identified a Synechococcus phylotype related to pelagic freshwater strains in the oldest lacustrine sediments as a putative source of 2-methylbacteriohopanetetrol (2-Me BHT). This combined application of advanced geochemical and paleogenomical tools further refined our knowledge about Holocene biogeochemical processes in Ace Lake.  相似文献

This study focuses on diatom assemblages occurring in cores of Late-glacial and Holocene deposits retrieved from the mouth of the lower Rega River valley, of the southern coast of the Baltic Sea. Sediment samples from four cores were the subject of the present study. Diatom-inferred environmental characteristics, e.g., water level; water salinity (conductivity), trophic status and pH, within each core are presented. Diatom assemblage zones (DAZ) were distinguished, based on differences in the distribution of particular ecological groups. Each DAZ appears to be related to environmental changes during the deposition of a given sediment interval. The Late-glacial (Allerød) sediments originated in a shallow lake with increasing concentrations of solutes and nutrients. The Holocene record begins in the early Atlantic Chronozone and the diatoms point to weakly brackish-water sediments deposited in a shallow water environment. During the period of 8,500–5,800 cal year BP sedimentation took place in a shallow embayment and/or lagoon. From ca. 5,800 cal year BP onwards sedimentation took place in a peat bog environment alternating with Aeolian deposition. Changes in diatom community structure imply a close relationship with the climate-controlled eustatic rise of the ocean level and its consequence Littorina transgression. As with other southern Baltic Sea localities, brackish-water diatoms appear in the sediments, signaling the onset of marine transgression somewhat earlier than previously accepted. Differences and similarities in diatom assemblages and the palaeogeographic development of nearby regions within the Baltic Sea basin and lagoons (coastal areas) from different geographic regions, are also discussed.  相似文献

Detailed interdisciplinary investigations demonstrate that Geneva Bay (Lake Geneva) sediments clearly record important palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic changes occurred during the Late glacial and early Holocene. Sediments are in fact differentiated by changes in texture, mineralogical and geochemical composition. Distal turbidite and glacial rhythmite deposition associated with wind-transported sediment supply dominate during the Oldest Dryas. These were replaced during the Allerød by detrital settling of sediment from turbid water and by endogenic calcite precipitation. The Younger Dryas climate reversal (for the first time in Lake Geneva well documented by a pollen record) was characterized by an increase in detrital supply owing to increased run-off from the bay slopes surrounding and within the catchment area, caused by thinning of vegetation cover. A brief pause in endogenic precipitation related to decreased productivity also occurs at this time. Endogenic carbonate sedimentation abruptly resumed at the start of the Preboreal biozone in response to the rapid global climatic warming. In the middle Preboreal, renewed detrital sedimentation is interpreted as the sedimentological response to increased erosion in high-altitude regions of the catchment area, caused by a minor early Holocene cooling phase (Preboreal oscillation), and interrupts the trend towards increasing endogenic calcite precipitation. Favourable limnic conditions are reached during the late Preboreal, when diatom–calcite rhythmites begin to form. Stable isotope analysis (δ18O, δ13C) in bulk carbonate highlight the transition from clastic-dominated to endogenic-dominated sedimentation. Endogenic calcite deposition continues during the Boreal biozone, occasionally interrupted by local high-energy sedimentary processes (wave-induced erosion and reworking of littoral deposits) enhanced by progressive lake-level lowering. During the Older Atlantic biozone, sedimentation was mainly dominated by low-energy deposition, creating enhanced conditions for the development of benthic fauna. We will discuss the factors that make Geneva Bay an important site for recording the Late glacial–Holocene climate and environmental changes. The comparison with other Swiss Plateau lacustrine systems allowed us to emphasize the role played by the particular geographical and morphological setting of the site investigated and links with climate-sensitive regions in the catchment area.  相似文献

The Naajaat lake in the Nuussuaq Basin on Disko and Nuussuaq formed in a geological setting between cratonic crystalline Precambrian rocks overlain by Cretaceous sediments and an actively forming Paleocene volcanic province. The lacustrine deposits, shales as well as hyaloclastite breccias, accumulated in low-lying areas inundated by fresh water and sealed off from marine transgressions by a broad subaerial volcanic terrain. Foreset-bedded hyaloclastite breccias demonstrate water depths of up to 450 m, and the area of the lake was 2500 km2 at its maximum extent. The lake probably existed for less than 0.5 million years. The lake received clay and silt from two provenance areas. Quartz contents of more than 25% in the majority of the sediment samples indicate that large amounts of material were continuously supplied to the lake from the crystalline terrain, whereas the volcanic terrain supplied smectite and mixed-layer minerals to the lake. High kaolinite contents stem from the crystalline or both provenance areas. The shales are characterized by high TOC (up to 11%), lack of pyrite, presence of terrestrial spores and pollen and lack of marine dinoflagellates. The lacustrine sediments rest on an erosional unconformity and its correlative conformity. The unconformity developed during the latest Cretaceous and Early Paleocene. Five stages are recognized in the geological development of the lake. Stages 1–4 are characterized by accumulation of hyaloclastite breccias, rise in lake level, and eventual transgression of subaerial terrains. The rises in lake level were caused by stemming of fluvial run-off behind the aggrading volcanic pile. Stage 5 corresponds to cessation of volcanic activity, a stable lake level, and progradation of clastic sediments, resulting in infilling of the lake. During the lacustrine transgression only sediment in suspension was transported into the central parts of the lake.  相似文献

Diatom analysis of surface sediments and two sediment cores from different sedimentation areas of a small closed lake was undertaken with the aim of acquiring knowledge on the dependence of the distribution of diatom assemblages on lake bathymetry. Lake Juusa was selected for the study because we have for this lake a large data set about the lithological composition of sediments and macrofossil and cladoceran records for the Holocene. A high carbonate content (20–60%) in the sediment sequence indicates high carbonacity and relatively stable pH values during the Holocene. On the basis of comprehensive analysis, abrupt water-level fluctuations and changes in the trophic status were established. Results of this study showed that the fluctuations of the water-level were the leading factor determining the habitats of diatom assemblages in the lake. In the surface sediment samples planktonic species such as Cyclotella spp., Stephanodiscus spp. and Aulacoseira spp. had a depth optimum at 3–4 m and the most abundant periphytic taxa were distributed mostly at depths shallower than 3.5 m. The same regularity was established in sediment cores where a good correlation between planktonic species and lake water depth was found in sediments accumulated at water depths >4 m. Lake Juusa appears to be a proper site for detailed environmental reconstructions over the Holocene, and the results will give us a good opportunity to analyse the history of water-level fluctuations in other small Estonian lakes. This article presents a review of the current data on the level of paleolimnological knowledge about lakes in the Russian part of the northern Eurasia. The results of investigation of the northwestern European part of Russia as the best paleolimnologically studied sector of the Russian north is presented in detail. The conditions of lacustrine sedimentation at the boundary between the Late Pleistocene and Holocene and the role of different external factors in formation of their chemical composition, including active volcanic activity and possible large meteorite impacts, are also discussed. The results of major paleoclimatic and paleoecological reconstructions in northern Siberia are presented. Particular attention is given to the databases of abiotic and biotic parameters of lake ecosystems as an important basis for quantitative reconstructions of climatic and ecological changes in the Late Pleistocene and Holocene. The Guadix-Baza Basin in Spain covers an area of approximately 3000 km2 and yields a sedimentary sequence ranging from Lower Miocene to Pleistocene. Twenty five meters of Lower Pleistocene lacustrine sediments have been located in the NE part of the Basin at about 1000 meters in altitude. This sequence which overlies dolomitic mud flat deposits consists of limestones, calcareous and dolomitic mudstones, dolostones, silty clays, sands and gravels. Salinity fluctuations and short dry episodes, related to lake level oscillations, have been recorded by textural, mineralogical and faunal changes throughout the sequence. Ostracods, which are the most commonly encountered fossils, permit to detect recurrent changes in water salinity and regime, and solute composition. The faunal changes indicate an alternation of slightly saline and bicarbonate-rich water (when ostracods and gastropods occur) with a saline NaCl-dominant water (in which ostracods, Cerastoderma bivalves and non-marine foraminifers are found). The frequent and recurrent hydrochemical changes in the Baza Basin in the Early Pleistocene point to a climate of high contrast like in the Mediterranean region today but with a greater availability of water within the system compared to the present situation in the area.  相似文献

The Holocene strata in the Anderson Inlet area in Victoria can be stratigraphically divided into four units, Unit I, Unit II, Unit III, and Unit IV. Unit I and Unit IV lack fossils and were deposited in non-marine, probably fluvial environments. Unit II and Unit III contain abundant foraminifera with molluscs, ostracods and bryozoans. Foraminiferal analysis suggests that Unit III was formed in a partially sheltered marine environment, while the high plankton content and relatively high diversity of benthic species in Unit II indicate that this unit was deposited in an open bay at water depths possibly less than 5 m. The foraminiferal data are integrated with radiocarbon dates to arrive at the following Holocene palaeoenvironmental history in this area: (1) low alluvial plain stage (10,000–7000 yr B.P.); (2) open bay environment stage (7000–5500 yr B.P.); (3) partially sheltered marine environment stage (5500–4500 yr B.P.); (4) alluvial plain and coastal lagoon environment stage (since about 4500 yr B.P.). The foraminiferal fauna show a clear response to these palaeoenvironmental changes. Globigerina bulloides can be used as an indicator for cold water marine environments. The high concentration of this species in these middle Holocene sediments shows a strong cold water influence on the coastal environments which reduced the effect of regional warm currents during this period. The Holocene palaeoenvironmental changes in the area were controlled by the Holocene sea-level fluctuations associated with the deglaciation history during this period. Similar integrated studies of shallow to marginal marine strata in southern Africa, America and New Zealand will lead to a better understanding of Holocene relative sea-level change and the interplay between Holocene cold and warm water regimes in the Southern Hemisphere.  相似文献

The Miocene basin of La Cerdanya (Pyrenees, Catalonia, Spain) consist of lacustrine diatomites and fan-deltaic (palustrine) lutites with lignites. A multidisciplinary analysis of palynofacies, organic geochemistry, taphofacies of plant macroremains and sedimentology was carried out in order to characterise taphonomically this basin. Palustrine facies contain highly diverse assemblages of palynomorphs and other palynological matter. The presence of relatively high amount of planar organic remains, mostly cuticles, in this palynofacies is indicative of deposition in the proximal parts of the basin. The organic content is low (1% TOC) except in the case of lignites, where it reaches up to 50%. Generally the Hydrogen Index (HI) values of the palustrine sediments are also relatively low (HI 70-189). Diatomite samples from the lake centre are characterised by high amount of the chlorococcalean alga Botryococcus and sapropelic organic matter and a HI above 500. In contrast, samples from the lake margins comprise Botryococcus, bisaccates and other anemophilous angiosperm pollen and have HI below 410. The TOC of lacustrine samples may reach levels of up to 45.5%. Palynofacies distribution shows a positive correlation with plant taphofacies only in the palustrine sediments but not in the lacustrine facies of the basin. Taphofacies of plant macroremains in the lacustrine sediments display a downslope polarity whereas palynofacies are distributed radially. A variety of transport mechanisms and different origins of palynological matter in comparison to plant macroremains account for this difference.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. The stratigraphy, radiocarbon chronology, sedimentary pigment, and cation records of sediment cores from four lakes in the Ecuadorian rain forest show that regional flooding occurred from about 1300 to 800 'BP. Each core contains a stratum of alluvial clay, silt and sand overlain by lacustrine deposits of peat, gyttja or clayey gyttja. Radiocarbon dates show that the onset and termination of the alluvial event was synchronous across the sites. Short-term, possibly regional, flooding occurred at each of the sites at least once since the major flood.
2. A core from Anangucocha, a black-water lake, records the geoche- mical signature of white-water incursion during this flooding interval. Sedimentary pigments show that aquatic production at Anañgucocha was low during the lotic interval but rose sharply and remained high within the modern lake period.
3. The Amazon's dynamic river system may have been an important force in promoting and maintaining high floral and faunal diversity.  相似文献

Thirty closely spaced cores were obtained from Miocene-aged fluvial, lacustrine and palaeosol subsurface sediments ranging in depth from 173 to 197 m at a site in south-central Washington to investigate the size and composition of the microbial community in relation to sediment geochemical and geophysical properties. Total phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis indicated that the greatest concentrations of microbial bio-mass were in low-permeability lacustrine sediments that also contained high concentrations of organic carbon. Community structure, based on lipid analyses and on in situ hybridization of bacterial cells with 16S RNA-directed DNA probes, also revealed the presence of metabolically active bacteria that respire sulphate and/or Fe(III) in the lacustrine sediments. Concentrations of pore water sulphate were low (4–8 mg/L) and HCI-extractable Fe was predominantly Fe(II) in the same samples where total biomass and organic carbon were highest. The low hydraulic conductivity (10-6 to < 10-9 cm/s) of these sediments has likely contributed to the long term maintenance of both bacteria and organic carbon by limiting the supply of soluble electron acceptors for microbial respiration. These results suggest that the current subsurface microbial population was derived from organisms that were present during lake sedimentation = 6–8 million years ago.  相似文献
