This hydroponic experiment was conducted to determine the effects of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) levels and frond-harvesting on the effectiveness of arsenic (As)-hyperaccumulator Chinese brake fern (Pteris vittata L.) to remove As from contaminated groundwater collected from south Florida. Three-month old ferns were grown in 38-L plastic tanks (two ferns per tank) containing 30-L of As-contaminated water (130 μg·L?1 As), which was amended with modified 0.25 strength Hoagland's solution #2. Two N (26 or 52 mg·L?1) and two P levels (1.2 and 2.4 mg·L?1) were tested in one experiment, whereas the effect of frond-harvesting was tested in a separate experiment. Initially, N had little effect on plant As removal whereas low P treatment was more effective than high P and As was reduced to <5 μg·L?1 in 28 d compared to 35 d. For well-established ferns, N and P levels had little effect. Reused fern, with or without harvesting the As-rich fronds, took up arsenic more rapidly so the As concentration in the groundwater declined faster (130 to ~10 μg·L?1 in 8 h). Regardless of the treatments, most As (85–93%) was located in the aboveground tissue (rhizomes and fronds). Frond As concentrations were higher for non-harvested ferns than for ferns where fronds were partially harvested prior to treatment. Conversely, rhizomes accumulated more arsenic in ferns where fronds had been partially harvested. Low-P treatment coupled with reuse of more established ferns with or without harvesting fronds can be used to effectively remove arsenic from contaminated water using P. vittata  相似文献

In order to evaluate the combined effects of drip irrigation and petroleum extraction activities on As contamination and distribution in local soils, a total of 141 soil and 30 groundwater (GW) samples from field sites drip-irrigated with GW in Kuitun, Xinjiang, China were collected and analyzed arsenic (As) levels. Soil As levels ranged from 6.74 to 23.10 mg·kg?1. For the field irrigated with As-loaded GW for 0.5-10 years, As levels in soils increased by 0.50-9.10 mg·kg?1 as compared with the control soils. As levels in all top-layer (0-10 cm in thickness) irrigated soils A (0-5 cm away from dripper) were found to be higher than those in top-layer irrigated soils B (5-10 cm away from dripper). It was estimated that As in agricultural soils increased by approximately 11~3789 g·yr?1·ha?1 under drip irrigating, most of which in top-layer soils covering the plant roots. The widely used drip irrigation system in Kuitun enhanced the ecological and human-health threats of As via affecting its spread into soils. Furthermore, the petroleum exploiting activity further promoted As levels in local soils. Within a distance of 10~1000 m away from petroleum exploiting sites, the soil As level decreases significantly with the distance.  相似文献

Biogeochemical, isotope geochemical and microbiological investigation of Lake Svetloe (White Sea basin), a meromictic freshwater was carried out in April 2014, when ice thickness was ~0.5 m, and the ice‐covered water column contained oxygen to 23 m depth. Below, the anoxic water column contained ferrous iron (up to 240 μμM), manganese (60 μM), sulfide (up to 2 μM) and dissolved methane (960 μM). The highest abundance of microbial cells revealed by epifluorescence microscopy was found in the chemocline (redox zone) at 23–24.5 m. Oxygenic photosynthesis exhibited two peaks: the major one (0.43 μmol C L?1 day?1) below the ice and the minor one in the chemocline zone, where cyanobacteria related to Synechococcus rubescens were detected. The maximum of anoxygenic photosynthesis (0.69 μmol C L?1 day?1) at the oxic/anoxic interface, for which green sulfur bacteria Chlorobium phaeoclathratiforme were probably responsible, exceeded the value for oxygenic photosynthesis. Bacterial sulfate reduction peaked (1.5 μmol S L?1 day?1) below the chemocline zone. The rates of methane oxidation were as high as 1.8 μmol CH4 L?1 day?1 at the oxi/anoxic interface and much lower in the oxic zone. Small phycoerythrin‐containing Synechococcus‐related cyanobacteria were probably involved in accumulation of metal oxides in the redox zone.  相似文献

This research demonstrates that biogenic pyrite formed by stimulation of indigenous sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in a natural aquifer can remove dissolved arsenic from contaminated groundwater under strongly reducing conditions. SRB metabolism led to the precipitation of biogenic pyrite nanoparticles capable of sorbing and co-precipitating arsenic. The field site is an industrial site where shallow groundwater in an unconfined sandy aquifer is contaminated by arsenic. Therefore, biodegradable organic carbon, ferrous iron, sulfate, and fertilizer were injected into groundwater and SRB metabolism began about 1 week later. Microscopic, X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, and electron microprobe analyses confirm the bio-mineralization of pyrite and over time, pyrite nanoparticles grew to form well-formed crystals (1–10?µm in diameter) or spherical aggregates that contain 0.05–0.4?wt. % arsenic, indicative of their capacity to sequester arsenic. Consequently, dissolved arsenic decreased from its initial concentration of 0.3–0.5?mg/L to below the regulatory clean-up standard for the site of 0.05?mg/L in three downgradient wells in a matter of weeks after injection. The main sequestration stage, with total arsenic removal rates greater than 90%, lasted for at least 6 months until the arrival and mixing of untreated groundwater from upgradient. Treated groundwater with most active bacterial sulfate reduction became enriched in heavy 34S (range from 2.02 to 4.00 ‰) compared to unaffected well water (0.40–0.61 ‰). One to three orders of magnitude increases in SRB cells were observed in treated wells for at least 2?months after injection. For a full-scale remediation, the injection of solution should start at positions hydrologically upgradient from the major plume and proceed downgradient. If needed, aquifers may be repeatedly amended with biodegradable organic carbon to reestablish the reducing conditions that favor arsenic sequestration.  相似文献

Vertical profiles of total dissolved arsenic, manganese and iron, pH, Eh and rates of sulfate reduction were determined in a freshly-collected box core from a 335m depth station in the Laurentian Trough. The relationships observed between the profiles were further examined in the laboratory by measuring these same parameters with time in surficial sediment slurries as the Eh decreased in response to biological activity or chemical alteration. Both field and laboratory observations have shown that arsenic is released predominantly as As(III) into reducing sediment porewaters. This occurs after the dissolution of manganese oxides and at the same time as the dissolution of iron oxyhydroxides and the onset of sulfate reduction. Laboratory experiments indicated that sulfate reduction and the production of sulfide ions are not solely responsible for the release of arsenic to the porewaters, although this process is necessary to create and maintain a highly reducing environment conducive to rapid iron dissolution. The diagenesis of arsenic in Laurentain Trough sediments involves the simultaneous release of arsenic and iron at a subsurface depth, followed by its removal from porewaters by precipitation and adsorption reactions after migration by diffusion along concentration gradients. A qualitative model is presented to describe the behavior of arsenic in coastal marine sediments.Present address: Department of Geological Sciences, McGill University, 3450 UniversityStreet, Montreal, Quebec H3A 2A7, Canada  相似文献

Aims: To investigate the relationships between sulfate‐reducing bacteria (SRB), growth conditions, bentonite densities and copper sulfide generation under circumstances relevant to underground, high‐level radioactive waste repositories. Methods and Results: Experiments took place 450 m underground, connected under in situ pressure to groundwater containing SRB. The microbial reduction of sulfate to sulfide and subsequent corrosion of copper test plates buried in compacted bentonite were analysed using radioactive sulfur (35SO42?) as tracer. Mass distribution of copper sulfide on the plates indicated a diffusive process. The relationship between average diffusion coefficients (Ds) and tested density (ρ) was linear. Ds (m2 s?1) = ?0·004 × ρ (kg m?3) + 8·2, decreasing by 0·2 Ds units per 50 kg m?3 increase in density, from 1·2 × 10?11 m2 s?1 at 1750 kg m?3 to 0·2 × 10?11 m2 s?1 at 2000 kg m?3. Conclusions: It is possible that sulfide corrosion of waste canisters in future radioactive waste repositories depends mainly on sulfide concentration at the boundary between groundwater and the buffer, which in turn depends on SRB growth conditions (e.g., sulfate accessibility, carbon availability and electron donors) and geochemical parameters (e.g., presence of ferrous iron, which immobilizes sulfide). Maintaining high bentonite density is also important in mitigating canister corrosion. Significance and Impact of the Study: The sulfide diffusion coefficients can be used in safety calculations regarding waste canister corrosion. The work supports findings that microbial activity in compacted bentonite will be restricted. The study emphasizes the importance of growth conditions for sulfate reduction at the groundwater boundary of the bentonite buffer and linked sulfide production.  相似文献

Chenopodium ambrosioides L. can tolerate high concentrations of manganese and has potential for its use in the revegetation of manganese mine tailings. Following a hydroponic investigation, transmission electron microscopy (TEM)-energy disperse spectroscopy (EDS) was used to study microstructure changes and the possible accumulation of Mn in leaf cells of C. ambrosioides in different Mn treatments (200, 1000, 10000 μmol·L?1). At 200 μmol·L?1, the ultrastructure of C. ambrosioides was clearly visible without any obvious damage. At 1000 μmol·L?1, the root, stem and leaf cells remained intact, and the organelles were clearly visible without any obvious damage. However, when the Mn concentration exceeded 1000 μmol·L?1 the number of mitochondria in root cells decreased and the chloroplasts in stem cells showed a decrease in grana lamellae and osmiophilic granules. Compared to controls, treatment with 1000 μmol·L?1 or 10000 μmol·L?1 Mn over 30 days, gave rise to black agglomerations in the cells. At 10000 μmol·L?1, Mn was observed to form acicular structures in leaf cells and intercellular spaces, which may be a form of tolerance and accumulation of Mn in C. ambrosioides. This study has furthered the understanding of Mn tolerance mechanisms in plants, and is potential for the revegetation of Mn-polluted soils.  相似文献

Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient that exerts multiple functions in the organism, and both its deficiency and excess can cause health impairments. Thus, it is important to monitor its levels in the population, especially in vulnerable groups, such as children from the Brazilian Amazon region, where there is a lack of information in this regard. The aim of this research was to study Se levels in the whole blood of children and teenagers (5–16 years old) from two riparian communities at the Madeira River (Cuniã RESEX and Belmont). Se level variations related to the communities’ location, seasonality, diet, and body mass index (BMI) were assessed. Blood samples were collected in both communities for Se determinations, using ICP-MS and hemogram analyses, during May and September of 2011. Food frequency questionnaires were applied to assess consumption rates of specific food items. Non-parametric tests and linear multiple regressions were applied in the data analyses. Median Se levels were significantly higher during May (Cuniã RESEX 149 μg L?1; Belmont 85 μg L?1) compared to September (Cuniã RESEX 79 μg L?1; Belmont 53 μg L?1). No significant differences were found between the communities regarding BMI measurements and anemia prevalence. However, Se blood levels were significantly higher at the Cuniã RESEX compared to Belmont. In addition, the former showed higher fish and Brazil nut intakes, which may be the main Se sources for this community. These results contribute to a better understanding of Se reference levels for children and teenagers of Western Amazon riparian communities.  相似文献

Arsenic speciation and cycling in the natural environment are highly impacted via biological processes. Since arsenic is ubiquitous in the environment, microorganisms have developed resistance mechanisms and detoxification pathways to overcome the arsenic toxicity. This study has evaluated the toxicity, transformation and accumulation of arsenic in a soil microalga Scenedesmus sp. The alga showed high tolerance to arsenite. The 72-h 50 % growth inhibitory concentrations (IC50 values) of the alga exposed to arsenite and arsenate in low-phosphate growth medium were 196.5 and 20.6 mg? L?1, respectively. When treated with up to 7.5 mg? L?1 arsenite, Scenedesmus sp. oxidised all arsenite to arsenate in solution. However, only 50 % of the total arsenic remained in the solution while the rest was accumulated in the cells. Thus, this alga has accumulated arsenic as much as 606 and 761 μg? g?1 dry weight when exposed to 750 μg? L?1 arsenite and arsenate, respectively, for 8 days. To our knowledge, this is the first report of biotransformation of arsenic by a soil alga. The ability of this alga to oxidise arsenite and accumulate arsenic could be used in bioremediation of arsenic from contaminated water and soil.  相似文献

As closed-basin systems, saline lakes are prone to fluctuate in level and salinity with climate change and hydrologic alterations. Loss of many Great Basin lakes has resulted from the diversion of tributary streams for agricultural or municipal uses. At Mono Lake, an alkaline salt lake in eastern California, salinities have risen from 50 to 100 g·L?1 in just 50 years. Experimental mesocosms were established to simulate some of the potential ecological effects that could have accompanied this change. The influence of salinity on diatom diversity, taxonomic structure, and primary production was tested using mesocosms deployed at Mono Lake. Mesocosm tanks were 500 L in volume, 1 m square, and 0.5 m deep, with open tops covered by 1 mm mesh net. Five treatments (50, 75, 100, 125, and 150 g·L?1) with four replicates per treatment were used over a 2-month period. The diatom-dominated benthic algae were reduced both in standing crop (from 6 to <0.1 g·m?2) and diversity (from 30 to 12 taxa) with increased salinity, with most loss occurring in salinities ≥75 g·L?1. Photosynthetic oxygen production also was significantly lower at salinities ≥75 g·L?1. Diatom indicator taxa for these shifts included Denticula sp., Nitzschia frustulum, N. monoensis, N. communis, and Stephanodiscus oregonicus increasing in relative abundance in higher salinity treatments, accompanied by decreases in Achnanthes minutissima, Cymbella minuta, N. dissipata, and Rhoicosphenia abbreviata. Exhibiting dominance at moderate salinity levels (75 to 125 g·L?1) were Nitzschia frustulum, N. communis, N. palea, and Navicula crucialis. These latter species may be limited by both physiological stress at high salinity and grazing and competition at low salinity. The filamentous chlorophyte, Ctenocladus circinnatus, and cyanobacteria (Oscillatoria spp.) occurred only in salinity treatments from 50 to 100 g·L?1. Diversion of tributary stream flow and resulting salinity increases in this lake threaten sustained benthic primary production and algal species diversity relative to conditions prior to stream diversion. The 1994 decision of the California State Water Resources Control Board to return stream flows to Mono Lake will raise the lake level and reduce salinity to around 75 g·L?1 and is expected to increase the diversity and productivity of the benthic algae of this ecosystem.  相似文献

Reductions in emissions have successfully led to a regional decline in atmospheric nitrogen depositions over the past 20 years. By analyzing long‐term data from 110 mountainous streams draining into German drinking water reservoirs, nitrate concentrations indeed declined in the majority of catchments. Furthermore, our meta‐analysis indicates that the declining nitrate levels are linked to the release of dissolved iron to streams likely due to a reductive dissolution of iron(III) minerals in riparian wetland soils. This dissolution process mobilized adsorbed compounds, such as phosphate, dissolved organic carbon and arsenic, resulting in concentration increases in the streams and higher inputs to receiving drinking water reservoirs. Reductive mobilization was most significant in catchments with stream nitrate concentrations <6 mg L?1. Here, nitrate, as a competing electron acceptor, was too low in concentration to inhibit microbial iron(III) reduction. Consequently, observed trends were strongest in forested catchments, where nitrate concentrations were unaffected by agricultural and urban sources and which were therefore sensitive to reductions of atmospheric nitrogen depositions. We conclude that there is strong evidence that the decline in nitrogen deposition toward pre‐industrial conditions lowers the redox buffer in riparian soils, destabilizing formerly fixed problematic compounds, and results in serious implications for water quality.  相似文献

L-Asparaginase amidohydrolase (EC 3.5.1.1) has received significant attention owing to its clinical use in acute lymphoblastic leukemia treatment and non-clinical applications in the food industry to reduce acrylamide (toxic compound) formation during the frying of starchy foods. In this study, a sequential optimization strategy was used to determine the best culture conditions for L-asparaginase production from filamentous fungus Aspergillus terreus CCT 7693 by submerged fermentation. The cultural conditions were studied using a 3-level, central composite design of response surface methodology, and biomass and enzyme production were optimized separately. The highest amount of biomass (22.0?g·L?1) was obtained with modified Czapek–Dox medium containing glucose (14?g·L?1), L-proline (10?g·L?1), and ammonium nitrate (2?g·L?1) fermented at 37.2?°C and pH 8.56; for maximum enzyme production (13.50?U·g?1), the best condition was modified Czapek–Dox medium containing glucose (2?g·L?1), L-proline (10?g·L?1), and inoculum concentration of 4.8?×?108 espore·mL?1 adjusted to pH 9.49 at 34.6?°C. The L-asparaginase production profile was studied in a 7?L bench-scale bioreactor and a final specific activity of 13.81?U·g?1 was achieved, which represents an increase of 200% in relation to the initial non-optimized conditions.  相似文献

We present data from sediment cores collected from IODP Site C0012 in the Shikoku Basin. Our site lies at the Nankai Trough, just prior to subduction of the 19 Ma Philippine Sea plate. Our data indicate that the sedimentary package is undergoing multiple routes of electron transport and that these differing pathways for oxidant supply generate a complex array of metabolic routes and microbial communities involved in carbon cycling. Numerical simulations matched to pore water data document that Ca2+ and Cl1‐ are largely supplied via diffusion from a high‐salinity (44.5 psu) basement fluid, which supports the presence of halophile Archean communities within the deep sedimentary package that are not observed in shallow sediments. Sulfate supply from basement supports anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) at a rate of ~0.2 pmol cm?3 day?1 at ~400 mbsf. We also note the disappearance of δ‐Proteobacteria at 434 mbsf, coincident with the maximum in methane concentration, and their reappearance at 463 mbsf, coinciding with the observed deeper increase in sulfate concentration toward the basement. We did not, however, find ANME representatives in any of the samples analyzed (from 340 to 463 mbsf). The lack of ANME may be due to an overshadowing effect from the more dominant archaeal phylotypes or may indicate involvement of unknown groups of archaea in AOM (i.e., unclassified Euryarchaeota). In addition to the supply of sulfate from a basement aquifer, the deep biosphere at this site is also influenced by an elevated supply of reactive iron (up to 143 μmol g?1) and manganese (up to 20 μmol g?1). The effect of these metal oxides on the sulfur cycle is inferred from an accompanying sulfur isotope fractionation much smaller than expected from traditional sulfate‐reducing pathways. The detection of the manganese‐ and iron‐reducer γ‐Proteobacteria Alteromonas at 367 mbsf is consistent with these geochemical inferences.  相似文献

Anthropogenic pollutants and climate change are major threats to coral reefs today. Yet interactions between chemical and thermal perturbations have not been fully explored in reef studies. Here, we present the single and combined effects of copper (Cu) with thermal stress on five early life-history stages/processes (fertilization, larval mortality, swimming ability, metamorphosis and growth of juvenile recruits) of the massive coral Platygyra acuta in Hong Kong. In the first four experiments, coral gametes and larvae were exposed to different Cu doses (0–200 μg L?1, apart from the fertilization assay in which 0–1000 μg L?1 was used) and temperature treatments (ambient and ambient +2 or +3 °C as a thermal stress treatment) following a factorial experimental design. Exposure time was 5 h for the fertilization assay and 48 h for the other experiments. The last experiment on growth of coral recruits was conducted over 56 d with 0–80 μg L?1 Cu used. Cu significantly reduced percent fertilization success, percentage of active swimming larvae and larval survivorship (EC50s, the half maximal effective concentrations, for percent fertilization success and percentage of active swimming larvae were 92–145 and 45–47 μg L?1 respectively. While LC50, the lethal concentration that kills 50% of the population, was 101–110 μg L?1), while growth of coral recruits was not affected at 80 μg L?1 Cu for 56 d. No settling cues were used in the settlement experiment. In their absence, percent metamorphosis increased with Cu doses, in sharp contrast to earlier findings. Settlement and metamorphosis may thus be strategies for coral larvae to escape from Cu toxicity. Thermal treatment did not significantly affect any experimental end points. This is likely because the thermal regimes used in the experiments were within the range experienced by local corals. The high variability in Cu toxicities indicates differential susceptibilities of the various life-history stages/processes of P. acuta. The level of Cu tolerance was also markedly higher than that reported in the literature for other coral species. This provides evidence to suggest possible adaptation of this species to survive in a highly polluted marine environment like that in Hong Kong.  相似文献

Several factors affecting erythritol production from glycerol by Yarrowia lipolytica Wratislavia K1 strain were examined in batch fermentations. Ammonium sulfate, monopotassium phosphate, and sodium chloride were identified as critical medium components that determine the ratio of polyols produced. The central composite rotatable experimental design was used to optimize medium composition for erythritol production. The concentrations of ammonium sulfate, monopotassium phosphate, and sodium chloride in the optimized medium were 2.25, 0.22, and 26.4 g L?1, respectively. The C:N ratio was found as 81:1. In the optimized medium with 100 g L?1 of glycerol the Wratislavia K1 strain produced 46.9 g L?1 of erythritol, which corresponded to a 0.47 g g?1 yield and a productivity of 0.85 g L?1 hr?1. In the fed-batch mode and medium with the total concentration of glycerol at 300 g L?1 and C:N ratio at 81:1, 132 g L?1 of erythritol was produced with 0.44 g g?1 yield and a productivity of 1.01 g L?1 hr?1.  相似文献

The combined effect of macronutrients in the extraction medium on α-amylase produced by Bacillus subtilis were studied by using response surface methodology in shaken flask cultures. The production of amylase was significantly affected by the interaction between wheat bran and the cotton seed extract in the extraction medium and by the interaction between the cotton seed extract and starch. The optimal combination in the extraction medium for maximum α-amylase production was determined as 10.80 g·L?1 of wheat bran, 9.90 g·L?1 of cotton seed extract, 0.5 g·L?1 of starch, 2.0 g·L?1 of yeast extract, 5.00 g·L?1 of NaCl and 2.00 g·L?1 of CaCl2. A 12.55-fold increase of enzyme activity was recorded in the optimized medium compared to the result acquired in a minimum essential medium. The optimized medium was used to compare different cultivation strategies in fermenters. The pH-stat strategy for reducing cellular stress response and the substrate concentration-stat strategy for reducing substrate inhibition were independently investigated. The temperature-limited strategy has been proposed to solve the proteolytic digestion problem, although the high-pressure strategy resulted in high productivity. A hybrid strategy simultaneously controlling pH, temperature, substrate concentration and pO2 was finally investigated to enhance the efficiency of the process. This hybrid strategy resulted in high activity of α-amylase, increasing the productivity almost three-fold as compared to an ordinary fed-batch culture.  相似文献

A survey of soil gases associated with gasoline stations on theSwan Coastal Plain of Western Australia has shown that 20% leak detectable amountsof petroleum. The fates of volatile hydrocarbons in the vadose zone at one contaminatedsite, and dissolved hydrocarbons in groundwater at another site were followed in anumber of studies which are herein reviewed. Geochemical evidence from a plume ofhydrocarbon-contaminated groundwater has shown that sulfate reduction rapidly developedas the terminal electron accepting process. Toluene degradation but not benzene degradationwas linked to sulfate reduction. The sulfate-reducing bacteria isolated from the plumerepresented a new species, Desulfosporosinus meridiei. Strains of the speciesdo not mineralise 14C-toluene in pure culture. The addition of large numbersof cells and sulfate to microcosms did stimulate toluene mineralisation but not benzenemineralisation. Attempts to follow populations of sulfate-reducing bacteria byphospholipid signatures, or Desulfosporosinus meridiei by FISH in the plume were unsuccessful, but fluorescently-labeled polyclonal antibodies were successfully used.In the vadose zone at a different site, volatile hydrocarbons were consumed in thetop 0.5 m of the soil profile. The fastest measured rate of mineralisation of 14C-benzenein soils collected from the most active zone (6.5 mg kg-1 day-1) could accountfor the majority of the flux of hydrocarbon vapour towards the surface. The studiesconcluded that intrinsic remediation by subsurface microbial populations in groundwateron the Swan Coastal Plain can control transport of aromatic hydrocarbon contamination, except for the transport of benzene in groundwater. In the vadose zone, intrinsicremediation by the microbial populations in the soil profile can contain the transportof aromatic hydrocarbons, provided the physical transport of gases, inparticular oxygen from the atmosphere, is not impeded by structures.  相似文献

Clones of the filamentous green alga Ctenocladus circinnatus Borzi were isolated from algae collected at Abert Lake (Oregon) and Mono Lake (California). Stock cultures were exposed to varied salinities of natural lake water to examine the effects on growth rate, cell form, chlorophyll a, and water content. Growth rates were reduced in both clones with increased salinity over the range 25–100 g·L?1 and were almost completely inhibited at 150 g·L?1. Chlorophyll a increased between salinities of 25 and 100 g·L?1, reflecting slower growth, higher proportions of akinetes, and smaller cell sizes as salinity increased. Tissue water content remained essentially constant from 25 to 100 g·L?1 salinity. Shorter cell dimensions with increased salinity suggest that a lower surface-to-volume ratio may reduce the potential for passive loss of cell water. Prior acclimation of stock cultures to elevated salinity provided no enhancement of growth response at any salinity. The results indicate that environmental salinity can limit the productivity and distribution of Ctenocladus in nature.  相似文献

This study was aimed to examine the risk of chronic arsenic (As) exposure for the residents living in Nui Phao, Thai Nguyen in the northern Vietnam. Groundwater, vegetables, human hair, and nail samples were collected from volunteers living in Nui Phao. The results revealed that 75% of the groundwater samples had As exceeding the World Health Organization (WHO) drinking water guideline of 10 µg L?1. The result of As concentration for most of the vegetable samples was greater than the WHO/FAO safe (0.1?mg kg?1). The result of hair and nail samples in this study showed that 3.5 and 20% of the samples had As concentration exceeding the level of As toxicity in hair and nails, respectively. The result of health risks indicated that the potential health risk of As contamination is greater for groundwater than vegetables. The total hazard quotient (HQ) value through vegetables ingestion and drinking water exceeded 1.0 suggesting potential health risk for local residents. The calculation of potential carcinogenic risk through both consumption of vegetables and drinking water was low cancer risk in adults. Other food sources and the exposure pathways are needed to exactly assess health risks in this area.  相似文献

Mercury sulfides (cinnabar and metacinnabar) are the main ores of Hg and are relatively stable under oxic conditions (Ksp = 10?54 and 10?52, respectively). However, until now their stability in the presence of micro‐organisms inhabiting acid mine drainage (AMD) systems was unknown. We tested the effects of the AMD microbial community from the inoperative Hg mine at New Idria, CA, present in sediments of an AMD settling pond adjacent to the main waste pile and in a microbial biofilm on the surface of this pond, on the solubility of crystalline HgS. A 16S rRNA gene clone library revealed that the AMD microbial community was dominated by Fe‐oxidizing (orders Ferritrophicales and Gallionellas) and S‐oxidizing bacteria (Thiomonas sp.), with smaller amounts (≤6%) being comprised of the orders Xanthomondales and Rhodospirillales. Though the order Ferritrophicales dominate the 16S rRNA clones (>60%), qPCR results of the microbial community indicate that the Thiomonas sp. represents ~55% of the total micro‐organisms in the top 1 cm of the AMD microbial community. Although supersaturated with respect to cinnabar and metacinnabar, microcosms inoculated with the AMD microbial community were capable of releasing significantly more Hg into solution compared to inactivated or abiotic controls. Four different Hg‐containing materials were tested for bacterially enhanced HgS dissolution: pure cinnabar, pure metacinnabar, mine tailings, and calcine material (processed ore). In the microcosm with metacinnabar, the presence of the AMD microbial community resulted in an increase of dissolved Hg concentrations up to 500 μg L‐1 during the first 30 days of incubation. In abiotic control microcosms, dissolved Hg concentrations did not increase above 100 ng L?1. When Hg concentrations were below 50 μg L‐1, the Fe‐oxidizing bacteria in the AMD microbial community were still capable of oxidizing Fe(II) to Fe(III) in the AMD solution, whereas concentrations above 50 μg L?1 resulted in inhibition of microbial iron oxidation. Our experiments show that the AMD microbial community contributes to the dissolution of mercury sulfide minerals. These findings have major implications for risk assessment and future management of inoperative Hg mines worldwide.  相似文献
