The dynamics of growth (shoot and root dry weights, surface areas, hydraulic conductances, and root length) were measured in seedlings of five neotropical tree species aged 4–16 months. The species studied included two light-demanding pioneers (Miconia argentea and Apeiba membranacea) and three shade-tolerant young- or old-forest species (Pouteria reticulata, Gustavia superba, and Trichilia tuberculata). Growth analysis revealed that shoot and root dry weights and hydraulic conductances and leaf area all increased exponentially with time. Alternative methods of scaling measured parameters to reveal differences that might explain adaptations to microsites are discussed. Scaling root conductance to root surface area or root length revealed a few species differences but nothing that correlated with adaptation to light regimes. Scaling of root surface area or root length to root dry weight revealed that pioneers produced significantly more root area and length per gram dry weight investment than shade-tolerant species. Scaling of root and shoot hydraulic conductances to leaf area and scaling of root conductance to root dry weight and shoot conductance to shoot dry weight also revealed that pioneers were significantly more conductive to water than shade-tolerant species. The advantages of scaling hydraulic parameters to leaf surface area are discussed in terms of the Ohm's law analogue of water flow in plants. The degree of genetic integration among morphological and physiological characters associated with phosphate uptake in impoverished versus fertile sites was studied among 25 inbred homozygous lines of Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. The characters recorded were initial uptake rates, Cmin (which reflects the ability to deplete phosphate to low concentrations), SRL (specific root length), and root: shoot allocation variables. Highly significant genotypic differentiation was detected for all of the variables (P<0.001). Cmin was correlated with influx per cm or mg of root; the lines better able to pick up Pi at low concentrations generally had slower initial uptake rates per cm or mg of root. This suggests an evolutionary divergence between a character important for nutrient uptake under fertile conditions, and one important for nutrient uptake under impoverished conditions. This relationship however, may not be valid due to the non-proportional relationship between root length or mass and influx. With a measure of influx that took this non-proportionality into account, the relationship became nonsignificant. SRL was negatively correlated (P<0.05) with influx per unit length of root. This suggests that there is an allocation-based trade-off between root length and diameter among Arabidopsis thaliana genotypes. Lower uptake rates per unit length of root for genotypes with thin roots may simply be a consequence of lower root surface area.  相似文献

Every other week over their second growing season, stem height, collar diameter, shoot and root dry masses, number of lateral roots and length of the tap root were measured on nursery grown seedlings ofAbies balsamea L. Mill.,Pinus banksiana Lamb.,Pinus resinosa Ait.,Picea mariana Mill. BSP andPicea glauca Moench Voss. Root elongation, branching and mycorrhizal development were also recorded.Given species showed distinct seasonal growth patterns. The rate and timing of maximum root growth (mg/dry weight/week) differed markedly between species.Except for the increase in height ofPinus banksiana, root and shoot growth were not negatively correlated.The results are discussed in relation to the performance of tree seedlings in the nursery.  相似文献

Nodule numbers are regulated through systemic auto‐regulatory signals produced by shoots and roots. The relative effects of shoot and root genotype on nodule numbers together with relationships to organ biomass, carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) status, and related parameters were measured in pea (Pisum sativum) exploiting natural genetic variation in maturity and apparent nodulation intensity. Reciprocal grafting experiments between the early (Athos), intermediate (Phönix) and late (S00182) maturity phenotypes were performed and Pearson's correlation coefficients for the parameters were calculated. No significant correlations were found between shoot C/N ratios and plant morphology parameters, but the root C/N ratio showed a strong correlation with root fresh and dry weights as well as with shoot fresh weight with less significant interactions with leaf number. Hence, the root C/N ratio rather than shoot C/N had a predominant influence on plant morphology when pea plants are grown under conditions of symbiotic nitrogen supply. The only phenotypic characteristic that showed a statistically significant correlation with nodulation intensity was shoot length, which accounted for 68.5% of the variation. A strong linear relationship was demonstrated between shoot length and nodule numbers. Hence, pea nodule numbers are controlled by factors related to shoot extension, but not by shoot or root biomass accumulation, total C or total N. The relationship between shoot length and nodule numbers persisted under field conditions. These results suggest that stem height could be used as a breeding marker for the selection of pea cultivars with high nodule numbers and high seed N contents.  相似文献

利用花生R IL群体,分析了主根长、侧根数、根基粗(1 cm和3 cm处)、根体积、主根鲜重、干重、侧根鲜重和干重、主侧根瘤数等11个花生根部性状的遗传力,估算基因对数及性状间的相互关系,根据偏度系数(g1)和峰度系数(g2)的估算控制性状基因互作情况。结果表明:在11个研究性状中,有6个性状在2个亲本间差异显著或极显著。但不论性状在亲本间的差异显著与否,在R IL群体中基因型间的性状差异均表现为连续变异和明显的超亲分离。同时主根粗(1 cm)和主根长的变异系数较小,分别为11.27%和11.218%。11个花生根部性状都是受多基因控制的数量性状,如影响侧根根瘤数、侧根鲜重和侧根干重的基因均在10对左右;而其它性状的基因估计在5~7对左右,尤其是控制侧根数的基因最少为5对左右。而在R IL群体中,除侧根干重的遗传力最高,达0.569,其次是侧根根瘤和侧根数分别达0.545和0.542外,其它性状的遗传力均较低。同时控制主根长和主根粗(1 cm)的基因间存在重叠作用;而控制侧根根瘤、侧根鲜重和侧根干重基因间存在互作,表现为互补作用;控制其它性状的基因间互补或重叠作用不明显或者不存在。主根干重和侧根干重与根体积、主根粗(1 cm)和主根粗(3 cm)显著相关,根体积与主根粗(3 cm)极显著相关,主根鲜重和侧根鲜重与根体积的相关表现不一致。  相似文献

Allozymes and morphological characters were used to test whether host race evolution—the genetic divergence of parasitic populations caused by adaptation to different host species—has occurred in desert mistletoe,Phoradendron californicum. Populations ofPhoradendron californicum from two hosts,Acacia greggii andProsopis glandulosa, were surveyed from the Mojave and Colorado deserts. Electrophoretic data indicated genetic differentiation of mistletoes occurring on these hosts. Three of four morphological characters (internode length, main shoot lateral shoot diameter ratio and berry color) also showed significant host-specific differentiation. These data support the hypothesis that host race formation has occurred or is occurring in this parasitic angiosperm.  相似文献

We investigated the role of three autoregulation of nodulation (AON) genes in regulating of root and shoot phenotypes when responding to changing nitrogen availability in the model legume, Medicago truncatula. These genes, RDN1‐1 (ROOT DETERMINED NODULATION1‐1), SUNN (SUPER NUMERIC NODULES), and LSS (LIKE SUNN SUPERNODULAOR), act in a systemic signalling pathway that limits nodule numbers. This pathway is also influenced by nitrogen availability, but it is not well known if AON genes control root and shoot phenotypes other than nodule numbers in response to nitrogen. We conducted a controlled glasshouse experiment to compare root and shoot phenotypes of mutants and wild type plants treated with four nitrate concentrations. All AON mutants showed altered rhizobia‐independent phenotypes, including biomass allocation, lateral root length, lateral root density, and root length ratio. In response to nitrogen, uninoculated AON mutants were less plastic than the wild type in controlling root mass ratio, root length ratio, and lateral root length. This suggests that AON genes control nodulation‐independent root architecture phenotypes in response to nitrogen. The phenotypic differences between wild type and AON mutants were exacerbated by the presence of nodules, pointing to resource competition as an additional mechanism affecting root and shoot responses to nitrogen.  相似文献

Summary Taxa of the Carex flava group in Switzerland show a trend towards increased colonizing ability (r-selection). High colonizing ability is correlated with a large fundamental but a small and discontinuous realized niche. It is argued that r-selected species with wide niches should be monomorphic with generalists rather than polymorphic with specialists since they have small effective population sizes in which high genetic variability cannot be maintained. The most r-selected taxon of the group, C. viridula spp. viridula, has indeed the lowest genetic variability within populations but, in ecologically important characters, expresses the highest plasticity. The taxonomically important characters (inflorescences) have high heritability and differences between populations of C. viridula ssp. viridula are probably much affected by genetic drift.  相似文献

Using low concentrations of picloram (0.06 mg/l), embryoids were formed on the surface of leaf-derived callus of pea, Pisum sativum L. (c.v. Dippes Gelbe Victoria) upon transfer to liquid medium. After some days in culture, embryoids spontaneously separated from the calli, and developed into torpedo-shaped embryos, which were transferred to solid medium. In a second series of experiments, embryos were also formed by mutant 489C and a genetic line of Pisum arvense, which additionally exhibited embryogenesis also from epicotyl-derived callus. Some of the embryos showed root formation, but no shoot morphogenesis occurred. In a limited number of cases, an additional root was formed in the apparent shoot apical region after 2–5 days.  相似文献

Aluminum effects on the morphological development of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) were characterized in greenhouse and growth chamber experiments. An Al-sensitive cultivar, ‘Ransom’, was grown in an acid soil (Aeric Paleudult) adjusted to 3 levels of exchangeable Al. Lateral shoot development at the nodes of the main stem was extensive in the limed soil containing 0.06 cmol(+) Alkg−1. However, lateral shoot length and weight were severely inhibited in the unlimed soil containing 2.19 cmol(+) Alkg−1, and in the unlimed soil amended to 2.63 cmol(+) Alkg−1 with AlCl3. This inhibition by the high Al/low pH condition was reversed by the exogenous application of a synthetic cytokinin 6-benzylaminopurine (BA). The daily application of 20 μg mL−1 BA applied locally to the lateral meristems of plants grown in the unlimed soil stimulated lateral shoot growth substantially, such that it was either comparable to or greater than that observed in the limed treatment without BA. Accumulation of K, Ca, and Mg in lateral shoot branches was also stimulated by the local application of BA. The inhibitory effects of Al on lateral shoot development were confirmed in solution culture. In addition, differential sensitivity to Al was evident among the primary root, first order lateral roots, and second order lateral roots. The length of the primary root was only slightly decreased by increasing concentrations of Al up to 30 μM. In contrast, the length of basipetally located first order lateral roots was restricted to greater extent; up to 50% by 30 μM Al. Second order lateral lengths were inhibited even more severely; up to 86% by 30 μM Al. Substantial evidence in the literature indicates that the root apex is a major site for the biosynthesis of cytokinin that is supplied to shoots, and cellular function and development in this region of the root are impaired during Al toxic conditions. This suggests that one mode of action by which Al may affect shoot growth is by inhibiting the synthesis and subsequent translocation of cytokinin to the meristematic regions of the shoot. The present observation of a reversal of Al-inhibited lateral shoot development by exogenously applied cytokinin supports this hypothesis. However, the inability of applied cytokinin to counter the restriction imposed by Al on total shoot dry matter production implies the impairment by Al toxicity of other root functions, such as ion and water transport, also played an important role in altering shoot morphology.  相似文献

Quantitative genetic variability for six characters was estimated in four populations of the annual plant, Collinsia heterophylla, with estimated selling rates ranging from 0.36 to 0.68. Based on large samples of parental plants, all four populations showed significant genetic variation for two or more characters, and there was no sign that the more selfing populations had lower amounts of genetic variance or lower heritability values. Autogamous fruit set rates in the absence of pollinators also showed significant heritability in one population.  相似文献

Seven banana cultivars (Musa acuminata, AAA group) were inoculated with two species of vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi (Glomus mosseae and Glomus macrocarpum) in a greenhouse experiment. Inoculated plants had generally greater shoot dry weight and shoot phosphorus concentrations compared to the noninoculated plants. A great variation in dependency on mycorrhizal colonization was observed among the banana cultivars. Cv. Williams showed the highest relative mycorrhizal dependency (RMD) and cv. Poyo the lowest. For all the cultivars studied, inoculation with G. macrocarpum resulted in the highest RMD values. Both root dry weight and root hair length or density of the noninoculated plants were inverserly correlated with the RMD values of cultivars.  相似文献

Root growth has a fundamental role in nitrogen (N) use efficiency. Nevertheless, little is known about how modern breeding progress has affected root growth and its responses to N supply. The root and shoot growth of a core set of 11 representative Chinese maize (Zea mays L.) hybrids released between 1973 and 2009 were investigated under high N (4 mmol L−1, HN) and low N (0.04 mmol L−1, LN) levels in a solution culture system. Compared with LN, HN treatment decreased root dry weight (RDW), the root: shoot ratio (R/S), and the relative growth rate for root dry weight (RGRroot), but increased the total root length (TRL) and the total lateral root length (LRL). The total axial root length (ARL) per plant was reduced under HN, mostly in hybrids released before the 1990s. The number of seminal roots (SRN) was largely unaffected by different N levels. More recently released hybrids showed higher relative growth rates in the shoot under both HN and LN. However, the roots only showed increased RGR under HN treatment. Correspondingly, there was a positive linear relationship with the year of hybrid release for TRL, LRL and ARL under HN treatment. Together, these results suggest that while shoot growth of maize has improved, its root growth has only improved under high N conditions over the last 36 years of selective breeding in China. Improving root growth under LN conditions may be necessary to increase the N use efficiency of maize.  相似文献

Salinity affects plant growth, development, yield, and is a big challenge for wheat growth across the globe. Possible feasible solution is creation of salt-tolerant material, genetic variation is a criterion to developing genetically superior individuals. To assess the genetic variation for salt tolerance, nationally and internationally-derived 81 wheat genotypes were selected and evaluated in 0- and 150-mM salt in nutritional culture at seedling stage. Results indicate that salinity levels reveal significant (p ≤ 0.01) differences for fresh root weight (RW), shoot length (SL), fresh shoot weight (SW), total plant length (TL), total fresh weight (TW), root/shoot weight ratio (RSWR), root/shoot length ratio (RSLR), and relative growth rate for weight (RGR-Wt). While, there was no difference for root length (RL). Hierarchical Clustering and Pairwise correlation analysis showed TW, RGR-Wt, SL, SW, and RW were positively correlated among themselves, whereas RL had poor correlations with all the traits except TL and RSLR. Hence, selection of SL can improve the performance of other parameters. Based on PCA analysis, SW and RGR-Wt were the major discriminative components for wheat genotypes. Present study explained that shoot related parameters could be used as a selection criterion to categorize salt-tolerant genotypes. Outperforming genotypes 1104 and 1106 in saline conditions could be used as parents in creation of salt-tolerant wheat genotypes, and parameters such as SL, SW, TW, and RGR-Wt for early screening will be important for creating salt-tolerant and high yielding wheat genotypes.  相似文献

Intra-specific competition with a primary focus on root competition between plants living in an area with low resource levels, was studied using the natural monotypic population of a desert annual plantEremobium aegyptiacum (Cruciferae). We tested the effect of neighboring distance on shoot and root biomass, and such root parameters as root length, diameter of root neck, number of first order lateral roots and number of lateral roots per unit of main root length. Our results indicate a strong negative relationship between neighboring plant density and such plant parameters as shoot and root biomass, and root neck diameter. The number of first order lateral roots and the number of lateral roots per unit of main root length were negatively related to the distance between neighboring plants. Contrary to predictions, there was no influence of competition on node distribution: neither root overlap nor root avoidance was observed in pairs of adjacent plants.  相似文献

 The objective of this work was to assess the degree of trinucleotide microsatellite length polymorphism in the selfing species Arabidopsis thaliana. PCR amplifications of 12 microsatellite loci among 49 natural populations revealed between one to eight length variants (alleles) for each locus. The average number of alleles per locus was four and the average genetic diversity index was 0.43. Divergence between length variants was investigated at the nucleotide level. Several observations emerge from the sequence data: (1) for most loci, length polymorphism results only from variations in the number of trinucleotide repeats; (2) for a few others, some variability was noted in the flanking sequences; (3) for compound and interrupted loci containing two arrays of trinucleotide repeats, length variations preferentially affect the longest one. Five of the Arabidopsis thaliana accessions were clearly composed of two sublines. In 2 other accessions, some heterozygous individual plants, probably resulting from recent outcrosses, were found. A phylogenetic tree constructed on the basis of trinucleotide microsatellite allelic diversity shows that genetic relationships among the accessions are not correlated with their geographic origin. Variability in traits of 15, diverse 6-year-old candidate plus trees of Jatropha curcas was determined to identify the best gain heritable traits correlating with oil yield for Jatropha improvement.

Abstract

Study was carried out on 15 6-year-old candidate plus trees of Jatropha curcas adapted on semi-arid wasteland with an objective to assess variation in morphological, physiological and oil quality characters. Heritable and non-heritable components of the total variability of the characters were determined by genotypic (GCV) and phenotypic (PCV) co-efficient of variation, heritability and genetic advance (GA) and the best gain traits for Jatropha improvement through selection and breeding were assessed. Further, association among the traits were assessed and germplasm were separated into different clusters. Significant variation was found among the different genotypes for all the characters. The photosynthetic and transpiration rate correlated with oil content, seed and oil yield. The chlorophyll pigments correlated positively with the photosynthetic rate and oil content. The seed oil content varied considerably from 27.68 % (JCN01) to 37.49 % (JCN14) and had high heritability, but it had low PCV and GCV and moderate GA. The oil yield plant?1 had high genetic variability and varied significantly from 0.07 (JCN15) to 0.47 kg plant?1 (JCN09/IC 565733). Though the different fatty acids differed significantly with different germplasm and also had high heritability, they had low PCV, GCV and GA. Seed weight, fruit weight, seed weight fruit?1 and seed yield plant?1 strongly correlated with oil yield and had moderate to high GCV, PCV, coupled with high heritability and GA. Germplasm were separated into four distinct clusters with a maximum inter distance found between cluster II and IV, and minimum between cluster I and III. The study helped to identify the superior germplasm among diverse genotypes of J. curcas that can serve as parents with desirable characters like high oil yield, low stomatal conductance and high water use efficiency for further breeding purposes.

The presence of high concentrations of arsenic (As) decreased the shoot and root dry weight, chlorophyll and P and Mg content of Eucalyptus globulus colonized with the arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi Glomus deserticola or G. claroideum, but these parameters were higher than in non-AM plants. As increased the percentage of AM length colonization and succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) activity in the root of E. globulus. Trichoderma harzianum, but not Trametes versicolor, increased the shoot and root dry weight, chlorophyll content, the percentage of AM root length colonization and SDH activity of E. globulus in presence of all As concentrations applied to soil when was inoculated together with G. claroideum. AM fungi increased shoot As and P concentration of E. globulus to higher level than the non-AM inoculated controls. The contribution of the AM and saprobe fungi to the translocation of As from root to shoot of E. globulus is discussed.  相似文献

Lupinus angustifolius and Lupinus pilosus differ substantially in root growth in response to high solution pH with L. angustifolius showing much greater sensitivity to pH above 6. This study examined the effect of pH above 6 on nodulation of these two species in buffered solution. Shoot weight and root weight and length in L. pilosus was not significantly affected by pH, whereas the growth of shoots and roots of L. angustifolius was markedly impaired by increasing pH. Total root length, the number of lateral roots, and the length of individual lateral roots were greatly decreased, resulting in decreased uptake of iron and phosphorus. In addition, L. angustifolius had a higher internal requirement for iron than L. pilosus. A solution pH above 6 decreased the number of nodule initials and nodules similarly in both species but decreased nodule mass much more in L. angustifolius. The effect of high pH on nodule formation occurred prior to that on host shoot growth. High pH also decreased nitrogen concentration and content in both species but to a greater extent for L. angustifolius. The results suggested that pH above 6 has a specific effect in the impairment of nodulation in lupins.  相似文献
