We report a possible case of extended gestation in the koala, Phascolarctos cinereus. Birth of a pouch young was first observed 127 days after the removal of the male from a multi-female colony at Taronga Zoo. No other males were present at that time or had access to the facility. Head measurements and other growth data collected at the time of detection and over the period of pouch life indicates the time from removal of the male and the date of birth to be between 50 and 77 days. DNA fingerprinting using microsatellite loci unambiguously assigned paternity of the pouch young to this male.

These observations suggest either an extended period of gestation of at least 50 days, or activation of a dormant blastocyst from the previous breeding season, as the female entered the period of seasonal oestrus.  相似文献

Vagrant Antarctic pinnipeds at Gough Island   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Opportunistic sightings of Antarctic fur seals Arctocephalus gazella and a leopard seal Hydrurga leptonyx at Gough Island (40°20′S, 09°54′W) in the South Atlantic Ocean represent the northernmost island records for vagrant Antarctic fur seals, and only the second for a vagrant leopard seal at Gough Island. Some ten different individual Antarctic fur seals were sighted on a single day, up to seven on a single beach. An overall total of 18 individuals were recorded over a 7-week period in October/November 2005, before the onset of the breeding (pupping) season of the resident population of Subantarctic fur seals Arctocephalus tropicalis. Most were immature, male and mostly in good condition (n = 11, 61%); one mature male and six putative females were also present. All had departed after 23 November, although only a fraction of the available beaches was searched.  相似文献

The vocal displays of male Indian peafowl (Pavo cristatus) are thought to be sexually selected traits. To clarify the specific call types involved in breeding, as well as to provide basic information on the vocalisations of Indian peafowl, we conducted monthly daytime recordings in a large feral population in Japan. Based on 13,420 records, we identified seven different call types made only by males and six alarm calls uttered by both sexes. Furthermore, we found seasonal and diurnal changes in the calling activity of peafowl. Three of the male call types (keow, ka and hoot-call) were particularly important for breeding, as sexually mature males produced them only during the breeding season, in a similar diurnal pattern to other breeding behaviours. Copulation calls in primates are usually identified as sexually selected signals that promote the reproductive success of the caller. In this study, we investigated the acoustic structure of copulation calls in bonobos (Pan paniscus), a great ape known for its heightened socio‐sexuality. Throughout their cycles, females engage in sexual relations with both males and other females and produce copulation calls with both partners. We found that calls produced during sexual interactions with male and female partners could not be reliably distinguished in terms of their acoustic structure, despite major differences in mating behaviour and social context. Call structure was equally unaffected by the size of a female’s sexual swelling and by the rank of her mating partner. Rank of the partner did affect call delivery although only with male, but not female partners. The only strong effect on call structure was because of caller identity, suggesting that these signals primarily function to broadcast individual identity during sexual interactions. This primarily social use of an evolved reproductive signal is consistent with a broader trend seen in this species, namely a transition of sexual behaviour to social functions.  相似文献

A biological control strategy relying on a self-disseminating agent may provide the only affordable long-term technique for reducing brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) numbers throughout New Zealand. The objective of this study was to determine the frequency and patterns of social interactions in single and mixed-sex groups of possums, in order to identify interactions that may assist in the dissemination of biocontrol agents. Thirty-two sexually mature wild-caught possums (16 female, 16 male) were housed in captive groups (of four) in enclosures during the breeding and non-breeding seasons. Groups consisted of either all females, females and males or all males. Four types of social interactions were defined: threats, fights, affiliative and sexual interactions. Interactions only occurred between two animals at one time and were most frequent in the non-breeding season. Within all female groups, possums readily engaged in interactions that had either an agonistic or affiliative nature. Mixed-sex groups interacted less frequently than females, but also engaged in both agonistic and affiliative interactions. In contrast, possums in all male groups rarely interacted, with only a few fights and no affiliative interactions observed. Some mixed-sex dyads appeared to 'associate' during the breeding period. Young were produced by three females that regularly associated with a male and one female that showed little associative behaviour. Given the different interaction patterns observed in each group type, biological control agents that rely on specific interaction patterns for dissemination, are likely to spread at different rates among different possum groups and in different seasons.  相似文献

Age at sexual maturity among male polar bears (Ursus maritimus) and timing of the mating season were studied by microscopic and macroscopic analysis of the reproductive organs from 165 male and 92 female Greenland polar bears. Males became sexually mature in the spring following their fifth birthday. Testes sampled during the spring reached 95% of their asymptotic length at 5.8 years. Some spermatozoa were found in 2- to 4-year-old bears during the spring, but only in low concentrations in a mixture of other cell types. The first corpus luteum was found on 1 April and most ovulations were estimated to occur before mid-May which indicate that the peak of the mating season begins in late March and ends in May. These findings are somewhat different from a similar study from Svalbard, where the mating season is estimated to peak later and male polar bears are found to become mature earlier. We hypothesize that these differences occur because adolescent males have their peak testicular activity after the main breeding period and therefore appear to be fully sexually mature during summer and not during spring.  相似文献

Recordings of harp seal (Pagophilus groenlandicus) underwater vocalizations, obtained at 3-h intervals over 7 days during the breeding season, were examined with regard to the relative occurrence of high frequency calls. An increase of high frequency calls at mid-March is possibly associated with the onset of courtship and mating. A daily pattern indicated that the seals are vocally active all night and least active at daybreak and in the early afternoon. The inactive afternoon period coincided with the time that the greatest number of seals were resting on the ice. Remote and/or automated monitoring of vocalizations may provide a means of examining various underwater activities of marine mammals.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of vocalizations produced during the breeding season by the male harbour seal, an aquatically breeding pinniped. During the spring of 1999, playback experiments were conducted at eight locations in Elkhorn Slough, California, U.S.A. Through an underwater speaker, we presented male harbour seals with three acoustic stimuli: a long-duration, low-frequency roar (LL), a short-duration, high-frequency roar (SH) and amplified water noise (control). Male responses to the playback boat were characterized by increased approach rates and aggressive flipper slapping during 62.5% of SH sessions (N=8), 25% of LL sessions (N=8) and 0% of control sessions (N=8). No more than one identifiable seal responded during each playback location. We observed no responses by female harbour seals to playbacks. We conclude from these experiments that territorial male harbour seals use roars given by intruders to locate and challenge intruders.  相似文献

The parma wallaby, Macropus parma, is one of four species of wallaby introduced on to Kawau Island, New Zealand, in ahout 1870. A sample of sixty-four parmas was shot on the island in February 1973 to provide information on breeding activity and age structure of the population. Incidental data were also collected from the tammar wallaby, Macropus eugenii, which is the other common species on the island. Neither the sex ratio of the shot sample of parmas (thirty-seven males to twenty-seven females) nor that of the tammars (eleven males to eleven females) differed significantly from parity. Onset of sexual maturity of female parmas on Kawau I. was delayed when compared with that of captive females. One female was estimated to have bred at 19 months old but most females in the sample were not mature until 2 years old and a few not until 3 years old. In contrast, female tammars became sexually mature at about 12 months. There did not appear to be any delay in the onset of sexual maturity of male parma wallabies. In the shot sample, none of sixteen female parmas capable of having a young were carrying a pouch young whereas nine of ten female tammars had a pouch young. The mean date of birth of these latter young was 30 January (range 18 January - 11 February) which is consistent with the breeding season of tammars in Australia. Among the mature female parmas two had recently mated, six were in pro-oestrus and six were in anoestrus, indicating that the breeding season in 1973 had just commenced. Estimated months of birth for all parmas under 3 years of age suggested that breeding was continuous in 1970–71 but that there had been a defined breeding season in 1972 with births occurring between March and July. There was an excess of 1– and 2–year-old parmas in the sample. This was the result of continuous breeding in 1970–71, presumably due to the provision of pasture on farmland being developed on the island. A sample of thirty-three tammar skulls resulting from a shoot in November 1972 did not show a nmilar excess of 1– and 2–year-old animals as this species has a rigidly defined breeding pattern and the females can produce only one young a year.  相似文献

Mating behaviour of woodfrogs was investigated in a woodland pond in southeastern Michigan. Males became sexually mature one year before females and outnumbered females by 5.6 to 1 at the breeding site. Males employed searching behaviour to obtain mates. Yearly male mating success varied from 0 to 2 matings, and larger males had a greater probability of mating than smaller males. The mating season lasted less than 10 days. Most egg masses were deposited in 1 m2 of a 256-m2 pond. Experimental introduction of egg masses to the breeding site indicated that presence of eggs was sufficient to stimulate egg deposition. The influence of selection for synchronous sexual receptivity in females, communal egg deposition, and delayed female sexual maturation on male mating behaviour and variation in male mating success is discussed.  相似文献

In anurans, circulating levels of androgens influence certain secondary sexual characteristics that are expressed only during the breeding season. We studied the contractile properties of external oblique muscles (used to power sound production) in a species of North American gray tree frog, Hyla chrysoscelis, during the breeding season and also in testosterone-treated captive males and females after the breeding season. Compared with the muscles of breeding-season males, the trunk muscles of postbreeding-season males have 50% less mass, 60% longer twitches, and 40% slower shortening velocities. Testosterone levels similar to those found in breeding-season male hylid frogs restore the contractile speed and mass of male trunk muscles and also convert the small slow trunk muscles of females into larger fast-contracting muscles. We conclude that androgens likely play a key role in altering the contractile properties of these muscles in males during the annual cycle, allowing them to operate in the breeding season at the frequencies required to produce the characteristic rapidly pulsed calls of this species. Females as well as nonbreeding-season males do not produce advertising calls, and therefore the slower muscles found in these animals may allow more economic operation of these muscles. The effects of testosterone on female trunk muscles indicate the potential of this hormone in contributing to the sexual dimorphism in size and contractile properties of these muscles, but this dimorphism is likely due to the interaction of more than one hormone.  相似文献

Weddell seal vocalizations from Davis Station showed similarities to those from McMurdo Sound and Palmer Peninsula, but none were identical. One vocalization, DD1, was unique to Davis Station. At all sites trills, or territorial defense calls, were the most common and had more types than other calls. Chugs, an aggressive sound, were common at all sites. Weddell seal calls from Davis Station showed similarities to sounds from McMurdo by sharing the use of prefixes and suffixes. Sounds from Davis Station shared the use of both ascending and descending trills and whistles with calls from Palmer Peninsula.Commonalities in underwater vocalizations may indicate the degree of mixing between breeding populations, in which case, Weddell seals in the Davis area probably are from a breeding population distinct from those at either McMurdo Sound or Palmer Peninsula.  相似文献

A unique playback system was used to exaggerate continuously the number of calls heard in royal penguin, Eudyptes schlegeli, colonies to determine whether social facilitation increases a female's exposure to both sexual and agonistic activities, a process that could influence the timing of reproduction in colonies. We also determined whether the source of colony sound or the phase of the breeding cycle influenced the facilitation of sexual or agonistic activities. The system recorded and then played a new 12-min colony sound sample every 24 min throughout the first four phases of the breeding cycle. Because each broadcast was unique, this playback system avoids the possibility of habituation and can modify the acoustic environment in social groups for extended periods of time. The activities of penguins in control colonies (with no playback) were compared with those in colonies that heard samples derived from either their own or a different colony. Colony sound facilitated both sexual and agonistic activities from male and female royal penguins during all four phases of the cycle that we examined. Playbacks from the perceiver's own colony facilitated a greater response than sound originating from a different colony. Studies comparing egg-laying dates in colonies exposed continuously to the sounds of agonistic activities with those in control colonies, or colonies exposed continuously to the sounds of sexual activities are now needed to determine whether the facilitation of agonistic activities opposes the effects of social stimulation on the hormonal changes leading to ovulation in colony-dwelling birds. Although non‐linear phenomena are common in human and non‐human animal vocalisations, their functional relevance remains poorly understood. One theory posits that non‐linear phenomena generate unpredictability in vocalisations, which increases the auditory impact of vocal signals, and makes animals less likely to habituate to call repetition. Female koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) produce vocal signals when they reject male copulation attempts that contain relatively high levels of non‐linear phenomena, and thus may function as attention grabbing vocal signals during the breeding season. To test this hypothesis, we used playback experiments: firstly, to determine whether female rejection calls induce heightened behavioural responses in free‐ranging male koalas during the breeding season, and secondly, to examine how the relative amount of non‐linear phenomena in rejection calls influences male behavioural response. The results show that male koalas look for longer towards speakers broadcasting playback sequences of male bellows followed by a series of female rejection calls than those broadcasting only male bellows. In addition, female rejection call sequences with more subharmonics, higher harmonics‐to‐noise ratios, and less biphonation produced the greatest male looking responses. Our findings support the hypothesis that female koala rejection calls function to grab male attention during the breeding season, and indicate that subharmonics are the main acoustic feature that increases the auditory impact of these vocal signals.  相似文献

Chemicals present in urine are thought to play an important role in mate identification in the solitary giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca). During the breeding season, females will deposit chemical signals to advertise sexual receptivity to potential mates. The goal of this study was to determine if specific volatile compounds found in female urine could be considered as pheromones that elicit behavioral and physiological responses in males. Experimental simultaneous choice trials were conducted with captive male giant pandas (n = 3) housed at Memphis Zoo, San Diego Zoo, and Zoo Atlanta. Octanoic acid, 1H-pyrrole-2-carboxaldehyde, decanoic acid, and civetone were selected as stimuli because previous studies reported their elevation in urine during the breeding season. Male interest was determined by a behavioral preference toward these volatile compounds diluted in synthetic urine compared with nontreated synthetic urine. Male urine samples were collected 1 week prior, during, and 1 week after the experimental period to assess changes in urinary semiochemical composition and urinary androgen concentrations. No significant differences in investigation response (p = .395) or flehmen response (p = .600) were found when stimuli were compared; however, decanoic acid and civetone elicited a behavioral preference over the control (response ratio > 0.5). The relative abundance of 16 compounds identified in male urine was significantly elevated (p < .05) above baseline values after the males were exposed to the stimuli. Androgen levels were significantly elevated (p < .05) in one male after exposure to 1H-pyrrole-2-carboxaldehyde, decanoic acid, and civetone. These data suggested that civetone and decanoic acid in female urine may motivate sexual responses in males.  相似文献

This study focuses on the role of male-male vocal communication in the reproductive repertoire of the South African clawed frog, Xenopus laevis. Six male and two female call types were recorded from native ponds in the environs of Cape Town, South Africa. These include all call types previously recorded in the laboratory as well as one previously unidentified male call: chirping. The amount of calling and the number of call types increased as the breeding season progressed. Laboratory recordings indicated that all six male call types were directed to males; three of these were directed to both sexes and three were directed exclusively to males. Both female call types were directed exclusively to males. The predominant call type, in both field and laboratory recordings, was the male advertisement call. Sexual state affected male vocal behaviour. Male pairs in which at least one male was sexually active (gonadotropin injected) produced all call types, whereas pairs of uninjected males rarely called. Some call types were strongly associated with a specific behaviour and others were not. Clasped males always growled and clasping males typically produced amplectant calls or chirps; males not engaged in clasping most frequently advertised. The amount of advertising produced by one male was profoundly affected by the presence of another male. Pairing two sexually active males resulted in suppression of advertisement calling in one; suppression was released when males were isolated after pairing. Vocal dominance was achieved even in the absence of physical contact (clasping). We suggest that X. laevis males gain a reproductive advantage by competing for advertisement privileges and by vocally suppressing neighbouring males.  相似文献

It has been proposed that intraspecific ultrasonic communication observed in some moths evolved, through sexual selection, subsequent to the development of ears sensitive to echolocation calls of insectivorous bats. Given this scenario, the receiver bias model of signal evolution argues that acoustic communication in moths should have evolved through the exploitation of receivers'' sensory bias towards bat ultrasound. We tested this model using a noctuid moth Spodoptera litura, males of which were recently found to produce courtship ultrasound. We first investigated the mechanism of sound production in the male moth, and subsequently the role of the sound with reference to the female''s ability to discriminate male courtship songs from bat calls. We found that males have sex-specific tymbals for ultrasound emission, and that the broadcast of either male songs or simulated bat calls equally increased the acceptance of muted males by the female. It was concluded that females of this moth do not distinguish between male songs and bat calls, supporting the idea that acoustic communication in this moth evolved through a sensory exploitation process.  相似文献

Aspects of reproductive history and performance in captive female chimpanzees were examined from the records of Taronga Zoo, Sydney. All the females had raised their own infants. The average duration of post-partum amenorrhoea in Taronga females was 28 months which was shorter than that in free-living females at Gombe National Park. Despite this shorter post-partum amenorrhoea, the average age difference between surviving offspring of the captive females is similar to that observed in the free-living population. As a result, the “completed family sizes” of females at Taronga have been similar to those observed in free-living populations.  相似文献

We present the first evidence for sexual deception by female mimicry in birds. Using live, caged birds we show that territorial male pied flycatchers behave aggressively toward bright-colored males but display sexually toward female-like male intruders. We also show that the males that are fooled are those that lack recent sexual experience. All male pied flycatchers are dull-colored in winter. It is possible that young males are more constrained during the spring molt than older males since the former are more dull-colored in spring. According to the molt-constraints hypothesis a subadult plumage would be maladaptive in the breeding season. Analysis of male settling pattern at breeding sites in spring suggests that brownish males are allowed to settle closer to already-established males than dark-colored males. This result suggests an adaptive value of having a subadult plumage color, in particular for young males arriving late from spring migration. However, we also show that mimicry incurs a cost, that of increased aggression from females, which may explain why female-like males have reduced mating success.  相似文献

Six adult male rhesus monkeys were introduced individually to an all-female group for 10 days during the mating season. The initial aggressive responses of the females were rapidly replaced by positive social behaviour, and each male achieved alpha status and had access to social and sexual partners. A repetition of this paradigm in the non-breeding season produced significantly more female aggression, and no male attained high rank or engaged in sexual or other social behaviour. Male testosterone levels rose following introduction to the females in both seasons, but were significantly higher during the breeding season. Hormonal levels following removal from the females suggest a complex interplay between social, sexual and seasonal variables and recent social experiences. The differences in female social behaviour with newly introduced males, as a function of season, suggest an explanation for the seasonal limitation of male troop transfers.  相似文献
