Image segmentation of retinal blood vessels is a process that can help to predict and diagnose cardiovascular related diseases, such as hypertension and diabetes, which are known to affect the retinal blood vessels’ appearance. This work proposes an unsupervised method for the segmentation of retinal vessels images using a combined matched filter, Frangi’s filter and Gabor Wavelet filter to enhance the images. The combination of these three filters in order to improve the segmentation is the main motivation of this work. We investigate two approaches to perform the filter combination: weighted mean and median ranking. Segmentation methods are tested after the vessel enhancement. Enhanced images with median ranking are segmented using a simple threshold criterion. Two segmentation procedures are applied when considering enhanced retinal images using the weighted mean approach. The first method is based on deformable models and the second uses fuzzy C-means for the image segmentation. The procedure is evaluated using two public image databases, Drive and Stare. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed methods perform well for vessel segmentation in comparison with state-of-the-art methods.  相似文献

Segmentation is an important step for the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS). This paper presents a new approach to the fully automatic segmentation of MS lesions in Fluid Attenuated Inversion Recovery (FLAIR) Magnetic Resonance (MR) images. With the aim of increasing the contrast of the FLAIR MR images with respect to the MS lesions, the proposed method first estimates the fuzzy memberships of brain tissues (i.e., the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), the normal-appearing brain tissue (NABT), and the lesion). The procedure for determining the fuzzy regions of their member functions is performed by maximizing fuzzy entropy through Genetic Algorithm. Research shows that the intersection points of the obtained membership functions are not accurate enough to segment brain tissues. Then, by extracting the structural similarity (SSIM) indices between the FLAIR MR image and its lesions membership image, a new contrast-enhanced image is created in which MS lesions have high contrast against other tissues. Finally, the new contrast-enhanced image is used to segment MS lesions. To evaluate the result of the proposed method, similarity criteria from all slices from 20 MS patients are calculated and compared with other methods, which include manual segmentation. The volume of segmented lesions is also computed and compared with Gold standard using the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) and paired samples t test. Similarity index for the patients with small lesion load, moderate lesion load and large lesion load was 0.7261, 0.7745 and 0.8231, respectively. The average overall similarity index for all patients is 0.7649. The t test result indicates that there is no statistically significant difference between the automatic and manual segmentation. The validated results show that this approach is very promising.  相似文献

In susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI), the high resolution required to obtain a proper contrast generation leads to a reduced signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The application of a denoising filter to produce images with higher SNR and still preserve small structures from excessive blurring is therefore extremely desirable. However, as the distributions of magnitude and phase noise may introduce biases during image restoration, the application of a denoising filter is non-trivial. Taking advantage of the potential multispectral nature of MR images, a multicomponent approach using a Non-Local Means (MNLM) denoising filter may perform better than a component-by-component image restoration method. Here we present a new MNLM-based method (Multicomponent-Imaginary-Real-SWI, hereafter MIR-SWI) to produce SWI images with high SNR and improved conspicuity. Both qualitative and quantitative comparisons of MIR-SWI with the original SWI scheme and previously proposed SWI restoring pipelines showed that MIR-SWI fared consistently better than the other approaches. Noise removal with MIR-SWI also provided improvement in contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and vessel conspicuity at higher factors of phase mask multiplications than the one suggested in the literature for SWI vessel imaging. We conclude that a proper handling of noise in the complex MR dataset may lead to improved image quality for SWI data.  相似文献

Multispectral images of soybean canopies can reflect plant physiological information and growth status effectively, which is of great significance for soybean high-quality breeding, scientific cultivation, and fine management. At present, it is uneven of the gray level difference of the soybean multispectral images occurred in the leaf edge, and is also small of the gray level difference between the target and the background, resulting in inaccurate recognition of the soybean canopies from the multispectral images. Thus, a multispectral images' recognition method of soybean canopies was proposed based on the neural network. First, the method of Gaussian smoothing filter was used to preprocess the raw soybean multispectral images (green light, near-infrared, red light, red edge, and visible light), which maintained the leaf edge details of the soybean multispectral image. Second, the feedforward neural network model was established to extract the canopy region in the soybean multispectral images. In addition, image morphology operation was used to improve the recognition effects of the soybean canopy. Finally, four quantitative indexes were used to evaluate the experimental results. The results showed that the average effective segmentation rate of the proposed method was 91.69%, the under-segmentation rate was reduced by 33.34%, and the over-segmentation rate was reduced by 48.43%. The difference between the pixel average entropy of the proposed method and the standard canopy image was only 0.2295. The research results can provide not only reliable data for further analysis of physiological and ecological indexes of the soybean canopy, but also technical support for multispectral image recognition of other crop canopies.  相似文献

Characterization of tissues like brain by using magnetic resonance (MR) images and colorization of the gray scale image has been reported in the literature, along with the advantages and drawbacks. Here, we present two independent methods; (i) a novel colorization method to underscore the variability in brain MR images, indicative of the underlying physical density of bio tissue, (ii) a segmentation method (both hard and soft segmentation) to characterize gray brain MR images. The segmented images are then transformed into color using the above-mentioned colorization method, yielding promising results for manual tracing. Our color transformation incorporates the voxel classification by matching the luminance of voxels of the source MR image and provided color image by measuring the distance between them. The segmentation method is based on single-phase clustering for 2D and 3D image segmentation with a new auto centroid selection method, which divides the image into three distinct regions (gray matter (GM), white matter (WM), and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) using prior anatomical knowledge). Results have been successfully validated on human T2-weighted (T2) brain MR images. The proposed method can be potentially applied to gray-scale images from other imaging modalities, in bringing out additional diagnostic tissue information contained in the colorized image processing approach as described.  相似文献

  • Purpose
  • Image processing plays a fundamental role in the study of central nervous system, for example in the analysis of the vascular network in neurodegenerative diseases. Synchrotron X-ray Phase-contrast micro-Tomography (SXPCT) is a very attractive method to study weakly absorbing samples and features, such as the vascular network in the spinal cord (SC). However, the identification and segmentation of vascular structures in SXPCT images is seriously hampered by the presence of image noise and strong contrast inhomogeneities, due to the sensitivity of the technique to small electronic density variations. In order to help with these tasks, we implemented a user-friendly ImageJ plugin based on a 3D Gaussian steerable filter, tuned up for the enhancement of tubular structures in SXPCT images.
  • Methods
  • The developed 3D Gaussian steerable filter plugin for ImageJ is based on the steerability properties of Gaussian derivatives. We applied it to SXPCT images of ex-vivo mouse SCs acquired at different experimental conditions.
  • Results
  • The filter response shows a strong amplification of the source image contrast-to-background ratio (CBR), independently of structures orientation. We found that after the filter application, the CBR ratio increases by a factor ranging from ~6 to ~60. In addition, we also observed an increase of 35% of the contrast to noise ratio in the case of injured mouse SC.
  • Conclusion
  • The developed tool can generally facilitate the detection/segmentation of capillaries, veins and arteries that were not clearly observable in non-filtered SXPCT images. Its systematic application could allow obtaining quantitative information from pre-clinical and clinical images.

In literature, we can find different metrics to evaluate the detected edges in digital images, like Pratt''s figure of merit (FOM), Jaccard’s index (JI) and Dice’s coefficient (DC). These metrics compare two images, the first one is the reference edges image, and the second one is the detected edges image. It is important to mention that all existing metrics must binarize images before their evaluation. Binarization step causes information to be lost because an incomplete image is being evaluated. In this paper, we propose a fuzzy index (FI) for edge evaluation that does not use a binarization step. In order to process all detected edges, images are represented in their fuzzy form and all calculations are made with fuzzy sets operators and fuzzy Euclidean distance between both images. Our proposed index is compared to the most used metrics using synthetic images, with good results.  相似文献

Due to governmental, environmental, and economic concerns, the closed-loop supply chain network has attracted the attention of researchers. In this article, a multiproduct, multi-echelon, and multi-objective closed-loop supply chain network model in a fuzzy environment is proposed. The forward supply chain network includes raw material suppliers, virgin material suppliers, plants, distribution centers, and customer zones, while the reverse supply chain network is composed of customer zones, collection centers, refurbishing centers, dismantling centers, and decomposition centers. The objectives of this model are to minimize the total cost, waste, carbon dioxide, and risks. In order to solve the proposed model, a fuzzy multi-objective optimization method is used. A numerical example validates and verifies the practicability of the fuzzy model and solution method, and demonstrates the proposed model and method can be applied to solve real world problems.  相似文献

The visual system is highly sensitive to spatial context for encoding luminance patterns. Context sensitivity inspired the proposal of many neural mechanisms for explaining the perception of luminance (brightness). Here we propose a novel computational model for estimating the brightness of many visual illusions. We hypothesize that many aspects of brightness can be explained by a dynamic filtering process that reduces the redundancy in edge representations on the one hand, while non-redundant activity is enhanced on the other. The dynamic filter is learned for each input image and implements context sensitivity. Dynamic filtering is applied to the responses of (model) complex cells in order to build a gain control map. The gain control map then acts on simple cell responses before they are used to create a brightness map via activity propagation. Our approach is successful in predicting many challenging visual illusions, including contrast effects, assimilation, and reverse contrast with the same set of model parameters.  相似文献

The Convallaria keiskei, a plant species indigenous to Japan, is on the verge of extinction. In the past, they have been manually protected and managed. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which are already being applied in various fields, such as agriculture, surveying, and logistics, can be applied to automate this task. Image processing and machine learning techniques applied on images obtained from UAVs can automate Convallaria keiskei classification, help to estimate the increase in colony numbers, and reduce the detection cost. In a previous study, a flower number estimation method that combines image processing and a convolutional neural network (CNN) was proposed. However, leaf regions similar to flower regions were misidentified as flower regions, and the accuracy was reduced. Therefore, in this study, a method was investigated to reduce the number of false positives by excluding areas similar to the flower regions. Specifically, a novel detection method combining image processing, CNN, and fuzzy c-means is proposed. To validate the proposed method, it was compared with the previous method as well as the method in which k-means was used instead of fuzzy c-means. All results were evaluated using flower distribution maps marked by field workers. The proposed method improved the F-measure by up to 22.0% compared with the previous method. Application of the proposed method to orthorectified images facilitates the understanding of flower populations over a wide range of areas, which can contribute to the conservation and management of the species.  相似文献

Background

Ultrasound imaging technology has wide applications in cattle reproduction and has been used to monitor individual follicles and determine the patterns of follicular development. However, the speckles in ultrasound images affect the post-processing, such as follicle segmentation and finally affect the measurement of the follicles. In order to reduce the effect of speckles, a bilateral filter is developed in this paper.

Results

We develop a new bilateral filter for speckle reduction in ultrasound images for follicle segmentation and measurement. Different from the previous bilateral filters, the proposed bilateral filter uses normalized difference in the computation of the Gaussian intensity difference. We also present the results of follicle segmentation after speckle reduction. Experimental results on both synthetic images and real ultrasound images demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed filter.

Conclusions

Compared with the previous bilateral filters, the proposed bilateral filter can reduce speckles in both high-intensity regions and low intensity regions in ultrasound images. The segmentation of the follicles in the speckle reduced images by the proposed method has higher performance than the segmentation in the original ultrasound image, and the images filtered by Gaussian filter, the conventional bilateral filter respectively.

BACKGROUND: Epiluminescence microscopy (ELM) is a noninvasive clinical tool recently developed for the diagnosis of pigmented skin lesions (PSLs), with the aim of improving melanoma screening strategies. However, the complexity of the ELM grading protocol means that considerable expertise is required for differential diagnosis. In this paper we propose a computer-based tool able to screen ELM images of PSLs in order to aid clinicians in the detection of lesion patterns useful for differential diagnosis. METHODS: The method proposed is based on the supervised classification of pixels of digitized ELM images, and leads to the construction of classes of pixels used for image segmentation. This process has two major phases, i.e., a learning phase, where several hundred pixels are used in order to train and validate a classification model, and an application step, which consists of a massive classification of billions of pixels (i.e., the full image) by means of the rules obtained in the first phase. RESULTS: Our results show that the proposed method is suitable for lesion-from-background extraction, for complete image segmentation into several typical diagnostic patterns, and for artifact rejection. Hence, our prototype has the potential to assist in distinguishing lesion patterns which are associated with diagnostic information such as diffuse pigmentation, dark globules (black dots and brown globules), and the gray-blue veil. CONCLUSIONS: The system proposed in this paper can be considered as a tool to assist in PSL diagnosis.  相似文献

Three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction in single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) is a significant technique for recovering the 3D structure of proteins or other biological macromolecules from their two-dimensional (2D) noisy projection images taken from unknown random directions. Class averaging in single-particle cryo-EM is an important procedure for producing high-quality initial 3D structures, where image alignment is a fundamental step. In this paper, an efficient image alignment algorithm using 2D interpolation in the frequency domain of images is proposed to improve the estimation accuracy of alignment parameters of rotation angles and translational shifts between the two projection images, which can obtain subpixel and subangle accuracy. The proposed algorithm firstly uses the Fourier transform of two projection images to calculate a discrete cross-correlation matrix and then performs the 2D interpolation around the maximum value in the cross-correlation matrix. The alignment parameters are directly determined according to the position of the maximum value in the cross-correlation matrix after interpolation. Furthermore, the proposed image alignment algorithm and a spectral clustering algorithm are used to compute class averages for single-particle 3D reconstruction. The proposed image alignment algorithm is firstly tested on a Lena image and two cryo-EM datasets. Results show that the proposed image alignment algorithm can estimate the alignment parameters accurately and efficiently. The proposed method is also used to reconstruct preliminary 3D structures from a simulated cryo-EM dataset and a real cryo-EM dataset and to compare them with RELION. Experimental results show that the proposed method can obtain more high-quality class averages than RELION and can obtain higher reconstruction resolution than RELION even without iteration.  相似文献

This paper presents a vision-based force measurement method using an artificial neural network model. The proposed model is used for measuring the applied load to a spherical biological cell during micromanipulation process. The devised vision-based method is most useful when force measurement capability is required, but it is very challenging or even infeasible to use a force sensor. Artificial neural networks in conjunction with image processing techniques have been used to estimate the applied load to a cell. A bio-micromanipulation system capable of force measurement has also been established in order to collect the training data required for the proposed neural network model. The geometric characterization of zebrafish embryos membranes has been performed during the penetration of the micropipette prior to piercing. The geometric features are extracted from images using image processing techniques. These features have been used to describe the shape and quantify the deformation of the cell at different indentation depths. The neural network is trained by taking the visual data as the input and the measured corresponding force as the output. Once the neural network is trained with sufficient number of data, it can be used as a precise sensor in bio-micromanipulation setups. However, the proposed neural network model is applicable for indentation of any other spherical elastic object. The results demonstrate the capability of the proposed method. The outcomes of this study could be useful for measuring force in biological cell micromanipulation processes such as injection of the mouse oocyte/embryo.  相似文献

Advances in digital technologies have allowed us to generate more images than ever. Images of scanned documents are examples of these images that form a vital part in digital libraries and archives. Scanned degraded documents contain background noise and varying contrast and illumination, therefore, document image binarisation must be performed in order to separate foreground from background layers. Image binarisation is performed using either local adaptive thresholding or global thresholding; with local thresholding being generally considered as more successful. This paper presents a novel method to global thresholding, where a neural network is trained using local threshold values of an image in order to determine an optimum global threshold value which is used to binarise the whole image. The proposed method is compared with five local thresholding methods, and the experimental results indicate that our method is computationally cost-effective and capable of binarising scanned degraded documents with superior results.  相似文献

Primary crop losses in agriculture are due to leaf diseases, which farmers cannot identify early. If the diseases are not detected early and correctly, then the farmer will have to undergo huge losses. Therefore, in the field of agriculture, the detection of leaf diseases in tomato crops plays a vital role. Recent advances in computer vision and deep learning techniques have made disease prediction easy in agriculture. Tomato crop front side leaf images are considered for research due to their high exposure to diseases. The image segmentation process assumes a significant role in identifying disease affected areas on tomato leaf images. Therefore, this paper develops an efficient tomato crop leaf disease segmentation model using an enhanced radial basis function neural network (ERBFNN). The proposed ERBFNN is enhanced using the modified sunflower optimization (MSFO) algorithm. Initially, the noise present in the images is removed by a Gaussian filter followed by CLAHE (contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization) based on contrast enhancement and un-sharp masking. Then, color features are extracted from each leaf image and given to the segmentation stage to segment the disease portion of the input image. The performance of the proposed ERBFNN approach is estimated using different metrics such as accuracy, Jaccard coefficient (JC), Dice's coefficient (DC), precision, recall, F-Measure, sensitivity, specificity, and mean intersection over union (MIoU) and are compared with existing state-of-the-art methods of radial basis function (RBF), fuzzy c-means (FCM), and region growing (RG). The experimental results show that the proposed ERBFNN segmentation model outperformed with an accuracy of 98.92% compared to existing state-of-the-art methods like RBFNN, FCM, and RG, as well as previous research work.  相似文献

Liver-vessel segmentation plays an important role in vessel structure analysis for liver surgical planning. This paper presents a liver-vessel segmentation method based on extreme learning machine (ELM). Firstly, an anisotropic filter is used to remove noise while preserving vessel boundaries from the original computer tomography (CT) images. Then, based on the knowledge of prior shapes and geometrical structures, three classical vessel filters including Sato, Frangi and offset medialness filters together with the strain energy filter are used to extract vessel structure features. Finally, the ELM is applied to segment liver vessels from background voxels. Experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively segment liver vessels from abdominal CT images, and achieves good accuracy, sensitivity and specificity.  相似文献

Recently, with most mobile phones coming with dual cameras, stereo image super-resolution is becoming increasingly popular in phones and other modern acquisition devices, leading stereo super-resolution images spread widely on the Internet. However, current image forensics methods are carried out in monocular images, and high false positive rate appears when detecting stereo super-resolution images by these methods. Therefore, it is important to develop stereo super-resolution image detection method. In this paper, a convolutional neural network with multi-scale feature extraction and hierarchical feature fusion is proposed to detect the stereo super-resolution images. Multi-atrous convolutions are employed to extract multi-scale features and be adapt for varying stereo super-resolution images, and hierarchical feature fusion further improve the performance and robustness of the model. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed network can detect stereo super-resolution images effectively and achieve strong generalization and robustness. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first attempt to investigate the performance of current forensics methods when tested under stereo super-resolution images, and represent the first study of stereo super-resolution images detection. We believe that it can raise the awareness about the security of stereo super-resolution images.  相似文献

A new image-analysis-based method is described for assessing sarcomere heterogeneity in skinned rabbit psoas muscle fiber segments. This method consists of off-line, two-dimensional Fourier spectral analysis of video-taped muscle images. Local sarcomere length is assessed by partitioning the muscle images into half and quarter images spanning the original image and analyzing the associated spectra. The spectra are analyzed in two different ways, yielding two measures of sarcomere length. The first measure is obtained by calculating and inverting the centroid frequency of the first-order peak associated with each two-dimensional Fourier spectrum. The second measure is obtained in a similar manner, the only difference being that the two-dimensional spectra are first collapsed into one-dimensional line spectra by summing the pixels perpendicular to the fiber axis. Comparison of the two measures provides a measure of striation skewness that cannot be obtained by other image analysis based methods that determine sarcomere length by analyzing selected line luminance profiles.  相似文献
