Investigations of the common boreal-arctic cheilostomate bryozoans Cribrilina annulata and Celleporella hyalina have shown that the two species possess similar ovicell structures and reproductive patterns. Both species are characterized by frontal dwarf ovicellate zooids, that are female autozooidal polymorphs in C. hyalina and simultaneous hermaphroditic autozooids in C. annulata. The latter species in addition has ovicellate autozooids of the usual type. Each ovicell is formed from a maternal zooid only, and its cavity is lined by the outer hemispherical fold (ooecium) and the distal zooidal wall. The coelomic cavity of the ooecium is separated from the body cavity of the maternal zooid by a transverse wall with simple pores. Each pore is closed by a cell plug, and the ooecia may be considered as kenozooids. Each oocyte is accompanied by a single nurse cell that degenerates after ovulation. The eggs are macrolecithal in C. annulata and microlecithal in C. hyalina, and the former species is a non-placental brooder whereas the latter forms a placenta. Fertilization is precocious. Possible mechanisms of sperm entry as well as oviposition are discussed. The literature concerning ovicell structure and development in cheilostomates is analysed. It is proposed that the brood chamber of cribrimorphs evolved by a fusion of costae and a reduction of the daughter zooid in ancestral forms. © 1998 The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Fossil bryozoans sometimes contain fossilised brown bodies which remain after polypide degeneration. Position and shape of brown bodies as well as different skeletal diaphragms within living chambers allow outlining of autozooid anatomy in Palaeozoic trepostome bryozoans. In some trepostome bryozoans short autozooids were restricted by complete basal diaphragms to distal parts of autozooecia. In species with alternating hemiphragms, as in the specimen ofHemiphragma sp. described here, long autozooids occupied the entire autozooecial chambers. Their short polypides were positioned in distal parts of the autozooid. Both anatomic types correspond to the progressive polypide cycle afterBoardman. For species with ring septa, non-alternating hemiphragms (studied in an example ofNipponostenopora karatauensis) as well as without any diaphragms the stationary type of polypide cycle seems also to be possible. In that case, the polypides should be as long as the cystid.   相似文献

The “rhizoidsrdquo; surrounding the base of the erect “colony” emanating from the ancestrula in the Crisiidae, especially the simple species Crisidia cornuta (L.), are a regular adnate system of autozooids. Each autozooid is composed of a proximal adnate part and a distal peristome (in some species kenozooids are possibly intercalated). The autozooid peristomes support erect branches identical in budding and structure with the branch emanating from the erect peristome of the ancestrula. Thus, the complete crisiid colony consists of an adnate system of ancestrula and autozooids, which form erect branches from their peristomes. The adnate zooid system is comparable in autozooid morphology and budding pattern with simple uniserial stomatoporids. The tentative hypothesis is proposed that the crisiid group has developed from primitive stomatoporids; the adnate zooid system of the stomatoporids apparently evolved peristomial budding to produce the erect colony branches characteristic of crisiids.  相似文献

The four existing species of the ascophoran bryozoan Pentapora Fisher, 1807 are revised, and two new fossil species are introduced: Pentapora lacryma sp. nov. from the Pliocene Coralline Crag Formation of Suffolk, and Pentapora clipeus sp. nov. from the Pliocene of Emilia, Italy. The Arctic species Pentapora boreale Kuklinski & Hayward possesses a lyrula, does not belong in Pentapora, and is a junior synonym of Raymondcia rigida (Lorenz). The morphology of the autozooids is relatively uniform within the genus, and the main distinguishing characters are those of the ovicells and, particularly, the giant avicularia that are developed sporadically in all species apart from Pentapora foliacea, popularly known as ‘Ross coral’. A phylogenetic analysis based on skeletal characters returned a single shortest tree in which the three species of Pentapora from the North Atlantic (P. foliacea, Pentapora pertusa, and P. lacryma sp. nov. ) form a clade crownward of the three basal species from the Mediterranean (Pentapora ottomulleriana, Pentapora fascialis, and P. clipeus sp. nov. ). © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 160 , 17–39.  相似文献

Osthimosia chaotica sp. nov., a new celleporid cheilostome bryozoan, is described from samples collected in the South Shetland Isles and the Antarctic Peninsula. It differs from other Antarctic and Subantarctic species of the genus Osthimosia in the absence of vicarious avicularia, the characteristic development of its peristome and the reduced size of the primary orifice of the ovicelled zooids compared to those of autozooids. The occurrence of sexual polymorphism in the Bryozoa is discussed. The new species lives on laminar and filamentous algae.  相似文献

Three new cheilostome bryozoans species were discovered in the collections of the BIOPEARL I cruise to the Scotia Arc. The species were found on boulders from the continental slope and shelf-break of Powell Basin, South Georgia and Shag Rocks in Agassiz trawl catches from the RRS James Clarke Ross. Amphiblestrum henryi sp. nov. is characterised by a conspicuous avicularium acute to the frontal surface overarching more than half of the opesia. On the distobasal edge of the avicularium there are 1–4 processes pointed distally and distolaterally. Inferusia taylori gen. et sp. nov. is characterised by a reduced gymnocyst, extensive costate frontal shield, and an avicularium distal of the orifice. Antarctothoa haywardi sp. nov. has three types of zooids: autozooids, male and female, the males possessing a tiny orifice in relation to zooid size. The species is very similar to Antarcothoa alia but the shape of the autozooidal orifice, with its deeper and narrower sinus, as well as a lack of condyles in the proximal corners of the male orifice allow the species to be recognized as new.  相似文献

Colonies of Celleporella hyalina (L.), settled on glass Petri dishes, were grown in the Menai Straits. Water flow over the colonies was either unrestricted or increasingly restricted by short and long funnels fitted over the Petri dishes. Under all conditions, colonies grew exponentially for the first few weeks, but then growth decelerated. Growth rate at standard size was minimal in winter (December–February). Restricted water flow enhanced growth during winter but retarded growth at other times. Colonies began sexual reproduction at a size of ≈57 autozooids, but at different ages depending on growth conditions. When colonies had accumulated 1000–2000 autozooids, the number of reproductive zooids (males plus females) per autozooid became asymptotic in the ratio of 1.0 : 2.0 : 3.6 in conditions of restricted, semi-restricted, and unrestricted water flow, respectively. The proportion of sexual zooids that were reproductively active was greater among colonies experiencing greater water flow and, for all treatments, was greatest in June and least in winter. The experimentally induced trends in growth and reproduction were reversed by translocating colonies from one regime of water flow to another. Colonies had lower budding rates when grown close to neighbouring colonies than when isolated, but the ratio of reproductive zooids to autozooids was similar in both treatments. Ratios of female to male zooids varied among colonies but with no clear relation to the experimental conditions, suggesting that relative investments in male and female functions are largely under genetic control. The life history of C. hyalina is well-suited to the ephemeral frondai tissue of Laminaria saccharina L. (Lamour), commonly used as a substratum in British waters. Early sexual maturity and sexual activity, concurrent with somatic growth, maximize average sexual output in the circumstances of unpredictable longevity.  相似文献

The results of the investigations into the morphology of two bryozoan species Onychocella rowei (Brydone, 1906) and O. mimosa Brydone, 1930 (Cheilostomata: Onychocellidae Jullien, 1881) the specimens of which were discovered in an erratic block of Campanian age located in the vicinity of the town of Grodno (Belarus) are presented. The intra- and intercolonial variability of avicularia of these species are studied. Some colonies of O. rowei are shown to be aberrant forms that exhibit various developmental anomalies of autozooids and avicularia. Some specimens of O. rowei are shown to have reparative avicularia. The taxonomic positions of these species are discussed.  相似文献

Numerous gross morphological attributes are shared among unrelated free‐living bryozoans revealing convergent evolution associated with functional demands of living on soft sediments. Here, we show that the reproductive structures across free‐living groups evolved convergently. The most prominent convergent traits are the collective reduction of external brood chambers (ovicells) and the acquisition of internal brooding. Anatomical studies of four species from the cheilostome genera Cupuladria and Discoporella (Cupuladriidae) show that these species incubate their embryos in internal brooding sacs located in the coelom of the maternal nonpolymorphic autozooids. This sac consists of a main chamber and a narrow neck communicating to the vestibulum. The distal wall of the vestibulum possesses a cuticular thickening, which may further isolate the brood cavity. The presence of this character in all four species strongly supports grouping Cupuladria and Discoporella in one taxon. Further evidence suggests that the Cupuladriidae may be nested within the Calloporidae. Based on the structure of brooding organs, two scenarios are proposed to explain the evolution of the internal brooding in cupuladriids. The evolution of brood chambers and their origin in other free‐living cheilostomes is discussed. Unlike the vast majority of Neocheilostomina, almost all free‐living cheilostomes possess nonprominent chambers for embryonic incubation, either endozooidal and immersed ovicells or internal brooding sacs, supporting the idea that internal embryonic incubation is derived. We speculate that prominent skeletal brood chambers are disadvantageous to a free‐living mode of life that demands easy movement through sediment in instable sea‐floor settings. J. Comparative anatomical studies of 12 species from 10 genera (Callopora, Tegella, Amphiblestrum, Parellisina, Corbulella, Crassimarginatella, Valdemunitella, Bryocalyx, Concertina, Cauloramphus) belonging to one of the largest and most diverse bryozoan taxa, the Calloporidae, and one species from the genus Akatopora belonging to the related taxon Antroporidae, were undertaken to elucidate the morphological diversity of brooding structures and to recognize main trends in their evolution. Most of the species studied possess ovicells (specialized brooding receptacles) formed by the distal and maternal (egg-producing) autozooids. The distal zooid can be an autozooid, a vicarious avicularium or a kenozooid. The calcified protective hood (ooecium) is an outgrowth from the distal zooid. Hyperstomial or prominent ovicells are most common. They were found in species of the genera Callopora, Tegella, Amphiblestrum, Parellisina, Corbulella, Bryocalyx and Concertina. Subimmersed ovicells were found in Valdemunitella, and immersed ovicells in Crassimarginatella and Akatopora. Cauloramphus has an internal brooding sac and a vestigial kenozooidal ooecium, budded by the maternal zooid. Based on the structure of the brooding organs, the following evolutionary trends can be recognized within the group: (1) reduction of the distal (ooecium-producing) zooid, (2) immersion of the brooding cavity correlated with a reduction of the ooecium and ooecial vesicle and with changes in the ovicell closure and the structure of the brood chamber floor, (3) reduction of the calcification of the ectooecium, and (4) transition from bilobate to entire ooecium. The trend towards immersion of the brooding cavity could have evolved repeatedly within the Calloporidae. Transition from bilobate to entire ooecium is characteristic of the related taxon Cribrilinidae, showing a good example of parallel evolution of the ooecium in two closely related clades. Possible causes for the transformations described are discussed.  相似文献

In a recent revision of the gastropod genus Bellardiella, it became evident that the neotype of B. crassilabris had numerous borings over its entire shell surface. Superficial and light microscopical observation of the shell showed that the borings were made by a bryozoan belonging to the genus Penetrantia. Conventional techniques such as endocasting with the dissolution of the shell are impossible for type material. The application of non‐destructive micro‐CT‐scanning of the shell revealed the three‐dimensional arrangement of the entire colony within the shell. Careful analysis of the structure of the autozooids of the colony revealed that the species could not be assigned to any known species; we accordingly describe it as Penetrantia bellardiellae Schwaha, n. sp. The application of micro‐CT not only allowed the depiction of the new bryozoan species but also revealed the remains of a hermit crab located within the shell. The shell of Bellardiella crassilabris thus represents the type specimen of two species and contains a member of a third phylum inside. To our knowledge, this is a unique case, which also emphasizes the usefulness of micro‐CT imaging for precious specimens as well as the importance of historical museum collections.  相似文献

Autosomal dominant Charcot-Marie-Tooth type-1A neuropathy (CMT1A) is a demyelinating peripheral nerve disorder that is commonly associated with a submicroscopic tandem DNA duplication of a 1.5-Mb region of 17p11.2p12 that contains the peripheral myelin gene PMP22. Clinical features of CMT1A include progressive distal muscle atrophy and weakness, foot and hand deformities, gait abnormalities, absent reflexes, and the completely penetrant electrophysiologic phenotype of symmetric reductions in motor nerve conduction velocities (NCVs). Molecular and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analyses were performed to determine the duplication status of the PMP22 gene in four patients with rare cytogenetic duplications of 17p. Neuropathologic features of CMT1A were seen in two of these four patients, in addition to the complex phenotype associated with 17p partial trisomy. Our findings show that the CMT1A phenotype of reduced NCV is specifically associated with PMP22 gene duplication, thus providing further support for the PMP22 gene dosage mechanism for CMT1A. The name Quercus arbutifolia Hickel & A. Camus is lectotypifed. In addition, leaf epidermal features of Q. obovatifolia C. C. Huang, Q. arbutifolia and four other closely related species, Q. daimingshanensis (S. K. Lee) C. C. Huang, Q. merrillii Seemen, Q. litseoides Dunn and Q. tiaoloshanica Chun & W. C. Ko, were studied and compared using herbarium collections. Based on a comparison of leaf epidermal and other key taxonomic features, we conclude that Q. obovatifolia and Q. arbutifolia are identical. We thus reduce Q. obovatifolia to a new synonym of Q. arbutifolia. A key to the studied species is included.  相似文献

The nonspecific interaction of the mitogenic lectin Concanavalin A (Con A) with glycosyl-free liposomes of various composition has been investigated by microcalorimetric titration measurements. The results obtained show the following features of main interest: (1) the affinity constants (Ka) of the interaction of Con A with liposomal bilayers are in the order of magnitude 105–106M?1. The reaction enthalpies (ΔH) are positive, and small (approximately 0.1 KJ mol?1 lipid), compared to the free energy terms (?ΔG = 30–40 KJ mol?1 lipid). All lectin–lipid interactions are strongly entropy-controlled (ΔH/TΔS < 1.0). These thermodynamic features are characteristic for hydrophobic interaction processes. (2) The liposomal head-group charge does not significantly affect the lipid-affinity of Con A. Electrostatic forces thus appear to play a minor role in lectin–lipid interactions. (3) The lipid affinity of Con A is sensitive to the fluidity of the liposomal bilayers, increasing with increasing fluidity. Below the gel to liquid-crystal phase transition temperature, the lectin binding to liposomal bilayers is inhibited. (4) The binding isotherms, corresponding to the interaction of Con A with liposomes, composed of tightly packed, saturated phospholipids, exhibit pronounced positive cooperativity. This phenomenon is absent in the binding curves, corresponding to the interaction of Con A with more fluid liposomal bilayers. (5) The Con A specific inhibitor α-D -methylmannopyranoside (50 mM) drastically increases the molar reaction enthalpy. The Ka term is significantly reduced in presence of the inhibitor sugar. Urea induces analogous changes in the thermodynamic parameters of the lectin–lipid interaction. The effects of α-D -methylmannopyranoside are thus not Con A specific, but are attributable to solvent effects. (6) It was shown that the binding of one Con A molecule affects a large number (approximately 1000) of phospholipid molecules in the liposomal bilayer. (7) The affinity constants (Ka) of the interaction of Con A with glycosyl-free lipids are smaller by a factor of approximately 10, compared to the Ka terms, reported for Con A binding to biological membranes. The presence of glycosidic receptor groups thus controls the specificity of lectin–membrane interactions, whereas the nonspecific lectin–lipid interactions appear to represent the main driving force for the strong attachment of the lectin to membrane surfaces.  相似文献

A taphonomic analysis of the bivalvesArctica islandica (Arcticidae),Astarte borealis (Astartidae),Mytilus edulis (Mytilidae), andSpisula elliptica (Mactridae) from shallow-marine last interglacial Sediments exposed along the Pyoza river, Arkhangelsk region, shows that they differ in preservation, probably because of differences in shell shape, shell structures, and life habits. The Shells indicate that the temporal sequence of taphonomic processes was as follows: (1) pre-mortem bioerosion and dissolution; (2) post-mortem bioerosion; (3) abrasion, disarticulation, and fragmentation; and (4) dissolution. A new graphic Illustration, the taphonomic constituent diagram (TCD), is proposed to illustrate the sequences of taphonomic processes. It is inspired by the ichnofabric constituent diagram used in ichnology and integrates the shell surface coverage of different taphonomic features by graphically plotting them against relative time. The taphonomic constituent diagram may display differences in the Chronologie order of paleoenvironmental processes. Also, the diagram enables a combination of both microscopic and macroscopic taphonomic features, and eases comparative studies of fossil assemblages.   相似文献

Armillaria cepistipes and A. gallica (Basidiomycota, Physalacriaceae) are morphologically similar species, and they are often nearly indistinguishable using DNA-based methods targeting the ITS region of ribosomal DNA. The aim of this study was to examine morphological and ecological features of A. cepistipes and A. gallica, and to test other DNA-based methods to distinguish the two species. Our results revealed discriminative macro- and micromorphological features between these two species, especially the presence of a distinct central pileus ocella, the shape of the annulus, the character of the velar stipe remnants and the length of the terminal cells of the pileus scales. Ecologically, A. gallica generally prefers warmer areas in lowlands (oak and alluvial forests), while A. cepistipes is more common in hilly and lower montane beech forests in Central Europe. Nevertheless, despite differences in ecological preferences, certain locations between 300 and 500 m a.s.l. are known to sympatrically support both species. The sequences of the translation elongation factor 1-alpha showed high interspecific variability, and this gene is a more appropriate candidate for distinguishing A. gallica from A. cepistipes.  相似文献
