Formation of a circular hole 8–10 mm in diameter in the calcified layers of the carapace from crabs in stage C4 of the molt cycle stimulates the tissue under and adjacent to the injury to deposit a unique calcified cuticular material below the intact membranous layer. Deposition was followed for 69 days using light microscopic histology, histochemistry, and scanning electron microscopy. Quantitative analyses of CaCO3 were conducted using atomic absorption spectrophotometry and Gran titration. Spatial distribution of CaCO3 was determined with X-radiography. A scab is formed by day two under the injury. At four days the epithelium changes from squamous to columnar and deposits a PAS-positive layer with an irregular lamellar fine structure, followed by highly organized lamellae structurally similar to normal exocuticle. Histochemically, however, these lamellae resemble normal endocuticle. CaCO3 is evident external to the outermost lamellae by day eleven as a fused mass of aragonite granules. The lamellar region calcifies proximally from the outer surface and is amorphous CaCO3. Repair cuticle is approximately 20%CaCO3 by weight. 相似文献

A cytological observation, using conventional fixing and staining, is made on the hemopoietic tissue in the crab, Carcinus maenas. The hemopoietic organ is formed by nodules grouping different cell types; nodules are surrounded by a limiting layer including collagenous filaments and material looking like basal lamina. Some fibrocytes and semi-granulous hemocytes are lining this limited layer. These hemocytes, more or less flattened, are transforming in fibrocytes. Fibroblast-like cells, with well developed intercellular junctions, are the first cell type: their dedifferentiation gives rise to isolated mitoting cells. We have named these mitoting cells "hemocytoblast". They are stem cells for hyaline hemocytes. Fibroblast-like cells can be compared with "reticular cells" in Insects. Uncertainty exists as to the formation and evolution of nodules. 相似文献

The green shore crab, Carcinus maenas, undergoes on average 6?h periods of emersion during each low-tide cycle during the summer months. Under those conditions, the crab is cut off from its normal water environment and is exposed to potential stress from a suite of environmental and physiological changes: dehydration, compromised gas exchange and resultant internal hypoxia and hypercapnia, thermal stress, and ammonia toxicity. This study examined the comprehensive responses of the green crab in water and to a 6?h emersion period laboratory simulation of a tidal cycle followed by a 1?h re-immersion period, measuring indicators of dehydration, hemolymph osmolality, oxygen uptake, hemolymph acid–base status, heart and ventilatory rate, and hemolymph ammonia and ammonia excretion. Green crabs showed physiological responses of varying magnitude to 6?h of emersion. Individuals were found in the field exclusively under rocks and large clumps of seaweed where temperatures were approximately half those of exposed surfaces and relative humidity was about twice as high as ambient air. During emersion, crabs lost less than 5% of their wet weight, and hemolymph osmolality did not increase significantly. Oxygen uptake continued in air at about 50% of the control, aquatic values; and the gills continued to be ventilated by the scaphognathite, albeit at lower rates. Hemolymph lactate concentrations increased, indicating a shift to a greater reliance on anaerobic metabolism to support energetic needs. A slight acidosis developed in the hemolymph after 1?h of emersion, but it did not increase thereafter. Ammonia concentrations in the hemolymph were unchanged, as ammonia was volatilized by the gills and excreted into the air as NH3 gas. These results show that the green crab copes with emersion by seeking refuge in microhabitats that mitigate the changes in the physical parameters of intertidal emersion. Physiologically, desiccation is avoided, cardio-respiratory processes are maintained at reduced levels, and hemolymph acid–base balance is minimally affected. A large sample ofadult male Carcinus maenas was 79% right-handed and 21% left-handed. A separate sample of 207 intact adult males was divided into left-handed and right-handed crabs and four measurements were taken from all major and minor chelae. Correlation and regression analyses against carapace width on log-transformed data showed that major chelae of right-handed crabs grow proportionately higher with increasing size and the ideal mechanical advantage increases; concurrently, the fingers of the minor chelae grow proportionately longer. The data for left-handed crabs showed greater variability, especially for minor chelae, providing evidence for the concept that left-handedness arises by reversal of handedness following loss of the major chela from the right-hand side. Records of handedness in large samples of non-ocypodid heterochelous brachyuran crabs show a preponderance of right-handedness. 相似文献

Summary The phyllobranchiate gills of the green shore crab Carcinus maenas have been examined histologically and ultrastructurally. Each gill lamella is bounded by a chitinous cuticle. The apical surface of the branchial epithelium contacts this cuticle, and a basal lamina segregates the epithelium from an intralamellar hemocoel. In animals acclimated to normal sea water, five epithelial cell types can be identified in the lamellae of the posterior gills: chief cells, striated cells, pillar cells, nephrocytes, and glycocytes. Chief cells are the predominant cells in the branchial epithelium. They are squamous or low cuboidal and likely play a role in respiration. Striated cells, which are probably involved in ionoregulation, are also squamous or low cuboidal. Basal folds of the striated cells contain mitochondria and interdigitate with the bodies and processes of adjacent cells. Pillar cells span the hemocoel to link the proximal and distal sides of a lamella. Nephrocytes are large, spherical cells with voluminous vacuoles. They are rimmed by foot processes or pedicels and frequently associate with the pillar cells. Glycocytes are pleomorphic cells packed with glycogen granules and multigranular rosettes. The glycocytes often mingle with the nephrocytes. Inclusion of the nephrocytes and glycocytes as members of the branchial epithelium is justified by their participation in intercellular junctions and their position internal to the epithelial basal lamina. 相似文献

The effects of lethal mercury concentrations on regulation of hemolymph electrolytes in the shore crab Carcinus maenas were investigated. In most experiments mercury exposure reduced hemolymph osmolality and Na+, Cl- and K+ levels to 55-90% of controls in 48 hr. Mercury exposure augmented calcium levels to 120-300% of controls. The effect of mercury on all of the electrolytes varied during the year, especially on magnesium levels which showed significant increases or decreases, or remained unaffected in different experiments. 相似文献

We characterized nine polymorphic microsatellites in the Mediterranean shore crab Carcinus aestuarii (Decapoda: Portunidae). Microsatellites were isolated from a partial genomic library enriched for multiple motifs. All loci were polymorphic, with number of alleles ranging from two to 16 and a mean observed heterozygosity of 0.75. Seven loci were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, and two showed weak heterozygote deficiency. No linkage disequilibrium was found between loci. In addition, we tested Hardy-Weinberg and linkage equilibrium of three Carcinus maenas loci, already reported to cross-amplify in C. aestuarii. These molecular markers will be potentially useful to investigate genetic structure of this species. 相似文献

The carotenoid pigments of the hepatopancreas, ovaries and epidermis of Carcinus maenas were investigated. The following pigments were identified: β-carotene, δ-carotene, echinenone, isocryptoxanthin, canthaxanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin, flavoxanthin and astacene.
The relative abundance of these pigments in the three tissues and the presence of possible hydroxy and keto intermediates suggest the metabolism of astaxanthin from β-carotene. The metabolic pathway in Carcinus is discussed in relation to recent studies on other invertebrates. 相似文献

Artificial benthic collectors have been widely used for the assessment of settlement rates of decapod crustaceans. However, to date no consistent works have addressed spatial patterns of settlement in different estuarine habitats, and no specific studies targeted the interaction of artificial surfaces with the surrounding natural substrate. It may be expected that the artificial surface may produce a different thigmotactic response when compared to the natural substrate, which may limit the use of this technique for assessment of natural settlement rates. In this study the settlement rates of megalopae of the estuarine crab Carcinus maenas were addressed, specifically deploying artificial benthic collectors in different habitats both intertidal and subtidal in the lower Mira estuary. A number of experiments were performed concerning stratification and temporal fluctuations of settlement. Further, the interaction of collector surface with the surrounding substrate was investigated, by comparing settlement rates in natural and artificial substrates in different habitats. Results have shown significant differences in settlement between different estuarine habitats, both in spatially replicated experiments and in a high-resolution temporal experiment. However, comparison between settlement rates in artificial and natural substrates has shown that there is a strong interference between collectors and surrounding substrate, limiting interpretation of results concerning settlement rates in artificial substrate alone. 相似文献

The European shore crab, Carcinus maenas, is one of the most successful marine invasive species. Its success has been in part attributed to the loss of parasites, rekindling an interest in host-parasite interactions and impacts on host fitness in this crab. In the present study, we investigated C. maenas populations from Europe, South Africa and Australia for parasites, and assessed their impact on the fitness of male crabs. For the shore crab, testes weight along with success in mating competition is traded off against other life-history traits. We therefore used this parameter as an indicator both for reproductive fitness and a possible resource trade-off in response to parasite infestation. In the native range, crabs infested with Sacculina carcini showed significantly lower testes weight than uninfected crabs. However, helminth parasites did not generally cause reduced testes weights. Crab populations from South Africa and Australia were either parasitized at very low prevalences, or were completely parasite free. However, no population level effect of this parasite release was reflected in testes weight. These findings do not support a severe fitness impact of helminth parasites on C. maenas, which questions the role of parasites on its population dynamics, both in the native area and for invasive success. 相似文献

Summary Light-microscopical observations with immunofluorescence and peroxidase staining procedures revealed leu-enkephalin-like immunoreactivity in axon profiles of the sinus gland (SG) and in single small neurons in the optic ganglia of the eyestalk of Carcinus maenas. Electron microscopy of the SG showed reactivity to be associated with neurosecretory granules 82±23 nm in diameter. High performance liquid chromatography of SG-extracts revealed radioimmunoreactive substances with the retention times of synthetic met- and leu-enkephalin and met-enkephalin-Arg6-Phe7, respectively. 相似文献

After acclimation, Carcinus can maintain calcium balance in dilute (35-100%) but not in low calcium sea water. 71% of total haemolymph calcium (9-54 +/- 0-42 mM) was in ionic form as compared with 90-9%(9-9mM) in sea water. On acclimation to dilute sea water the calcium activity of the haemolymph was greater than that of the medium, the difference being maintained by active calcium uptake. Carcinus is highly permeable to Ca2+, influx from sea water being 0-513 +/- 0-07 mumoles g-1 h-1 and the time constant for calcium influx 4-3 +/- 0-48 h. We evaluate the potential competitive and predatory impacts of nonindigenous European green crab Carcinus maenas on native Dungeness crab Cancer magister in the northeast Pacific. The coastal estuaries of Washington State, USA, provide appropriate habitat for recently introduced green crab, yet these areas are important nursery grounds for Dungeness crab and contribute greatly to the coastal crab fishery. Juvenile Dungeness crabs are dependent on limited intertidal epibenthic shell for refuge habitat during early benthic life and experience increased mortality on open sand and mud as a result of predation by fish and birds. Early juveniles throughout the subtidal are similarly at risk due to predation by fish and especially adult conspecifics. Laboratory experiments and infrared video observations revealed that juvenile green crab displace Dungeness crab of equal size from shelters during one-on-one competition. Green crab also consistently win nocturnal foraging trials in which the species compete for fresh, damaged clams. Field and laboratory enclosure experiments show that juvenile Dungeness crab emigrate from oyster shell habitat as a result of competition and predation by adult green crab. Depending on the extent to which the two species overlap, interactions with the dominant nonindigenous species could have a negative influence on juvenile Dungeness crab survival and could conceivably impact recruitment to the fishery. However, current evidence indicates that the distribution of green crab in Washington State is far removed from nursery areas of Dungeness crab. 相似文献

Summary The isolated gills of Carcinus maenas, perfused at pressure drops of 1–10 cm of water, exhibited flow rectification, the resistance to perfusion via the afferent vessel being many times lower than that for efferent perfusion. The asymmetry was greater at the lower end of this pressure range.The overall afferent branchial resistance for Carcinus of weight 65 g, and with no ventilatory component in the transmural pressure difference, was estimated to be 0.05 cm of water. l–1 · sec. The corresponding overall reverse (efferent) branchial resistance was 0.36 cm of water · l–1 · sec.LM, TEM and SEM examination of the gills indicated that haemolymph leaves each gill lamella via several discrete parallel efferent channels which drain different regions of the lamella, and that each efferent channel is nearly closed, at its junction with the efferent branchial vessel, by a diaphragm of loosely interwoven and very elongated cells. It is concluded that these cells may constitute efferent valves and that narrow apertures between them may contribute a major component to the branchial resistance and be primarily responsible for the rectification of flow. Relatively wide apertures lead directly from the afferent vessel into the lamellae and are not asociated with valves of any kind.The valves may be important in enabling changes in transmural pressure associated with ventilatory reversals to pump haemolymph unidirectionally through the lamellae. Similarly valves may allow the oscillating venous pressures associated with locomotor activity to improve gill perfusion during exercise.The elongated tails of the cells of the efferent valve contain numerous microtubules. The wider cell bodies contain the nucleus and many mitochondria. Unusual organelles composed of many short (about 0.25 m long) microtubules and often lying close to the nuclear membrane may be microtubule organising centres. It is speculated that, in addition to their simple mechanical function, the valve cells may play a more dynamic role in regulating flow of haemolymph through different lamellar routes, or that they may monitor composition, pressure or flow of the efferent lamellar circulation. 相似文献
