Larval fishes and zooplankton in a cyclonic eddy in Hawaiian waters   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
A cold-core eddy occurred off the Kona coast of the island ofHawaii in July 1982. It remained in that area for {small tilde}70days, sufficient time for many reef fish species to completetheir planktonic larval phase. The deployment of eight currentdrogues in the eddy showed how entrainment of plankton fromthe reef and adjacent offshore waters can occur and that passivedrift can return drifters from the deep sea to shore. Larvalfishes may be swept past the island every 7–8 days ina weak eddy and 3.5–5 days in a strong eddy. Planktoncollections were made at night near the surface and at the samedepth as the current drogues. Zooplankton were most concentratedat the eddy center. Taxonomic analysis of the plankton showedthat the dominant animals were calanoid copepods, malacostracans,hyperud amphipods, gastropod and bivalve larvae and chaetognaths.The densities of zooplankton and larval fishes in the eddy werehigher than in the same area before the arrival of an eddy.Larval fishes were most abundant in the periphery and amongthese, midwater fish larvae (gonostomatids and myctophids) werethe most numerous. Other numerous fish larvae in the eddy includedscombrids, particularly Thunnus albacares. carangids and thereef fish, Abudefduf abdominalis is (Pomacentridae).  相似文献

The annual dynamics of the numbers and distribution of barnaclelarvae in Avacha Inlet were studied. Planktonic cirripede larvaewere found in the area studied from late March at a temperatureof –1–0°C until October. The highest densityof 18 000 m–3 was observed in mid-April. Balanus crenatusand Semibalanus cariosus were the dominant species, Chthamalusdalli and Balanus balanus larvae being less abundant. Naupliardensity was maximal at 0–5 m and decreased with depth.Maximum densities of B.crenatus larvae were observed in RakovayaBay, where there are many ships and a seawater-cooled powerstation. Surveys for veliger larvae of the large gastropods Strombusgigas and Strombus costatus were carried out in duplicate transectsrunning offshore (0.26–5 km) from Lee Stocking Island,Exuma Cays, Bahamas. The across-shelf distribution of the larvaeduring the 1991 spawning season was highly variable over periodsof 3–6 days. Larvae of both species are known to inhabitthe upper few meters of the water column, and analysis of windstress patterns over the study period showed that across-shelfdistribution of the larvae was affected by wind forcing. Seaward(recruitment-unfavorable) transport near Lee Stocking Islandwas most highly correlated with wind stress toward the north-northwest(335–357). The resultant wind stress during the studywas toward 279, suggesting that recruitment of conch to nurserygrounds on the Great Bahama Bank in the Exuma Cays occurs underanomalous summer wind conditions. The correlation between theacross-shelf distribution of conch veligers and wind stresswas highest with extinction coefficients of 0.17–0.23in the exponentially filtered wind stress. This indicates thatlarval distribution over the 5-km-long transects responded rapidlyto changes in wind stress. A biweekly sampling program from two stations at the easternLevant Basin was carried out during a 1-year period (1983).The first station (neritic) was located 2 km offshore over theIsraeli continental shelf, while the second (pelagic) was located10 km offshore slightly beyond the continental shelf. It wasfound that during summer the relatively close pelagic watershad chlorophyll a concentrations comparable with the most oligotrophicdeep sea regions of the world's oceans. During winter and spring,profound fluctuations were observed in both phytoplankton standingcrop and primary productivity at the neritic station. This wasin response to weather phenomena, such as heavy rains or storms,which did not affect the pelagic Station to such an extent.The picoplanklon size fraction (<3 µm) dominated atthe neritic station during summer and fall, while the nanoplanktonfraction (3–20 µm) dominated during spring. At thepelagic station the picoplankton fraction dominated almost allyear round, but it is suspected that some portion of it wasphotosynthetically inactive.  相似文献

The growth rate of a population of Euphausia lucens from thewest coast of South Africa was estimated from laboratory studiesand from monthly size-frequency distributions of samples collectedover a 1-year period. Laboratory studies indicated that growthrates ranged from 0.131 (larvae) to 0.047 mm day–1 (juveniles),while size-frequency distributions suggested a growth rate of{small tilde}0.026 mm day–1 for the adults. The mean annualbiomass from the inshore, intermediate and offshore regionsranged from 9.75 to 47.29 mg dry wt m–3 with the highestbiomass being found in the inshore region. Calyptopis larvaewere present for most months of the year, indicating continuousrecrwtment. The relative contribution of flesh, moults and eggsto the total annual production was estimated separately forall three regions. Production due to growth (Pg) was estimatedto be 92.71–185.60 mg dry wt m–3 year–1, whileexuviai production (Pe) varied between 60.01 and 281.38 mg drywt m year Production of eggs (Pr) was estimated to range from5.07 to 12.39 mg dry wt m year the lowest value being obtainedin the inshore region. Moult production represented {small tilde}6times the mean biomass in each region, while the P/B ratio forflesh production varied from 3.92 to 8.91, the highest ratiobeing obtained in the offshore region. The trophodynamics of a coastal plankton community were studied,focusing on fish larvae and their copepod prey. The major objectiveswere to describe distributional overlap and evaluate the predatoryimpact by larval fish. The study was carried out across DoggerBank in the North Sea, August-September 1991. Sampling transectscrossed tidal fronts off the Bank and plankton at all trophiclevels showed peak abundance within frontal zones. Also Verticallythere was a significant overlap in distributional patterns ofthe plankton. Seven species of fish larvae were abundant, ofthese sprat (Sprattus sprattus) dominated. The abundance ofone group of fish larvae peaked in the shallow water close tothe Bank, whereas other species, including sprat, were foundin deeper water. Prey preference and predation pressure of fishlarvae were assessed using information on prey sizes and growthrates of larvae and the copepod prey. We estimated larval removalof preferred prey sizes to 3–4% day–1, counterbalancedby a 3–7% day–1' replenishment from copepod productionand growth. Additional predation pressure on copepods by aninvertebrate predator was estimated to 1–3%day–1.In conclusion, the dynamics of fish larvae and other zooplankterswere closely linked. At peak abundances of fish larvae (>35mg dry weight m–2), the accumulated predation on specificsize ranges of copepods, exerted by larvae and other predators,could exceed the ability of copepod replenishment and intra-/interspecificcompetition among predators might take place.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of plankton studies in the Peruvianupwelling region off Chimbote from November - December, 1977,during the Investigación Cooperativa de la Anchovetay su Ecosistema (ICANE). Primary productivity, respiratory ETSactivity, composition of particulate organic matter, and microplanktoncell numbers were determined. Phytoplankton growth, and bacterialand ciliate carbon-uptake rates were computed from cell counts. Inshore waters were dominated by diatoms and were more productivethan offshore waters which were dominated by dinoflagellatesand ciliates. Particulate primary production averaged 5.26 ±5.24 g C m–2d–1, and the POC standing stock was7.75 ± 2.74 g C m–2 for the euphotic layer of 7shelf stations. On the shelf, microplankton respiration rateswere higher in plankton populations dominated by dinoflagellatesand ciliates (47% of particulate primary production per 24 h)than those in diatom dominated populations (11%, respectively).The diatom populations, which were dominated by Chaetocerosspecies, varied in their ecophysiological properties (assimilationnumbers, proportion of water soluble carbohydrate, and protein/nitrogenratios). The relationships between these variations and growthconditions were investigated. A 40 h time-series station revealedpatchiness which was superimposed on physiological changes ofthe plankters. Bacterial numbers of 2 x 106 cells/ml were foundin the euphotic layer corresponding to approximately 17 µgC/l bacterial biomass (or 6% of the POC standing stock). Ciliatebiomass (Lohmanniella oviformis was the dominating species)ranging from 2 to 9% of the POC standing stock were found evenin diatom dominated populations. From a rough carbon balancefor the euphotic layer it was deduced that in diatom dominatedpopulations, 36–77% of particulate primary productionwas potentially available to adult anchoveta grazing.  相似文献

Vertical profiles were made at one offshore station and onecoastal station, on 4-5 September 1996, in the south-easternSkagerrak. The surface water of the two stations differed significantlywith respect to both temperature and salinity, as the outerstation (A) was situated in high-saline water originating fromthe North Sea, while the low-saline surface water at the innerstation (B) was influenced by the Baltic current. Virus-likeparticle (VLP) abundance was 5 x 109–25 x 1091–1H in the 0-50 m water column. Maximal VLP values were foundin the surface water, although a lower number was detected inthe low-saline surface water (0 m depth) at station B. Data are reported from 30 dives during winter and spring 1980–83at sites in the Strait of Georgia and inlets running off it,and in inlets on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Observationswere made from the surface to the bottom (maximum 733 m) butmost attention was given to the midwater plankton community.The vertical distribution and abundance of hydromedusae, siphonophores,ctenophores, euphausiids, pelagic worms and molluscs were recordedsystematically, along with data for one copepod species (Neocalanusplumchrus). The midwater environment was found to be stablein terms of species composition and depth ranges, which permittedthe data for several years and many locations to be pooled.Four categories of plankton are recognized: (a) epipelagic (concentratedin the top 50 m); (b) mesopelagic (50–175 m); (c) bathypelagic(below 175 m); and (d) meso-bathypelagic (forms living in bothmeso- and bathypelagic zones). Species in this last categorybehave like mesopelagic forms at the upper end of their ranges,migrating to the surface at night. Deeper-lying members of thesame species do not migrate. For six such species, the cut-offpoint between migratory and non-migratory components was foundto lie at a mean depth of 175 m. This depth is therefore takenas the demarcation point between the meso- and bathypelagiczones. Taking account of published data on light penetration,it is estimated that, for the whole region, daytime light intensityat 175 m, and hence the effective limit for phototaxis of thespecies in question, lies in the range 10–8–10–9µW cm–2.  相似文献

A field comparison of an optical plankton counter (OPC) anda Longhurst-Hardy Plankton Recorder (LHPR) was undertaken aroundthe sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia during austral spring,1997, to investigate the capacity of the OPC to accurately describefine-scale plankton distributions. Initially, formalin-preserveddevelopmental stages of representative zooplankton were passedthrough a benchtop OPC and a relationship established betweenmaximum cross sectional area (CSA) of the plankton and the digitaloutput value (DOV) of the OPC. The LHPR with an OPC attachedto the net frame was then deployed at two stations representingcontrasting plankton abundances. Outputs from two oblique haulstaken at a shelf station, and one at an oceanic station, werecompared. Following corrections for volume swept by both instruments,and standardization of OPC particle and net plankton countson the basis of sampler mouth area, the OPC was found to ‘overestimate'relative to the net by up to several orders of magnitude. However,following the correction for rate of flow though the OPC, andthe application of a size threshold to the OPC data excludingthe proportion of particles <0.25 mm2 CSA, based on the expectedretention of plankton by the net there was a greatly improvedand significant correlation. Overall there was no consistentover- or undersample by the OPC relative to the net, with meanOPC:net ratios being 1–1.8 for net plankton densitiesof up to 6000 ind. m–3. There was also a generally goodagreement between the abundances of the rarer large biomassdominant calanoid copepods estimated by both samplers. The vertical distribution and migration patterns of chaetognathswere studied at a sampling station off northern Namibia (18°00'S,10°30'E during a 48 h sampling cycle. The sampling areawas characterized by mixing of the Angola current with the northernmostwaters of the Benguela current in the surface region. The continuousflow of the Angola current during the study period gave riseto a thermocline and a halocline at a depth of 40 m. The samplingintervals used to study the behaviour of epipelagic chaetognathspecies under these conditions were 200–100, 100–60,60–40, 40–20 and 20–0 m. A total of 10 differentchaetognath species were captured. Sagitia enflata was the predominantspecies, with a mean density of 4400 individuals per 1000 m3in daytime hauls, accounting for 54.1% of all individuals collectedin the samples. Sagitia minima was the next most predominantspecies, with a mean density of 2400 individuals per 1000 m3in daytime hauls, accounting for 16.6% of the chaetognath communitysampled. Three maturity stages were considered in analysingpossible ontogenetic migrations. Nearly all the species wereaggregated above the pycnocline, and stages I and II of manyspecies carried out short migrations in the surface layers.The limited migration pattern, together with a staggered distributionof the different species and stages above the pycnocline, hasbeen interpreted as a space partitioning mechanism to preventintra- and interspecific competition.  相似文献

The vertical distribution and feeding of pelagic chaetognathsat 5°S, 160°W in the Central Equatorial Pacific wereinvestigated using a series of 0–500 m vertical haulswith a VMPS net over a 24 h period between 6 and 7 October 1990.The total number of individuals per haul was between 370 and688. Fourteen species in four genera were found at this station.The most abundant species was Sagitta enflata which comprised32.4–61.1% of the individuals collected from the 0–500m layer. Mesopelagic species made up 9.3–15.1% of thetotal number of individuals. Sagitta enflata and Pterosagittadraco were found in the upper part of the thermocline both byday and at night. The fraction of the population containingfood items (FCF) of S.enflata in the 0–50 m layer variedbetween 4.8 and 12.5% (mean 10.8%) and feeding activity washighest between sunrise and noon. The percentages of Copepoda,Foraminifera, crustacean larvae, Chaetognatha, Pteropoda, Ostracoda,fish and unidentified material in the gut of S.enflata were51.9,6.7,3.8,2.9,1.9,1.9 and 30.9%, respectively. Sagitta enflataconsumed food organisms which were mainly between 0.5 and 1.0mm in length. The daily feeding rate of S.enflata was 1.81 preyper individual, which was equivalent to 8.06 mg C m–2day–1. In October 1977 the model of general circulation of the watermasses off the coast of Galicia, and the presence of a coastalupwelling, led to a high primary productivity. This high productivityin turn favoured the development of a rich population of decapodlarvae. The abundance and distribution pattern of these organismswere closely linked (i) to the abundant presence of the correspondingadult species in the area, (ii) with the spatial distributionof phytoplanktonic populations concurrently studied by Estrada[J. Plankton Res ., 6, 417–434 (1984)] and (iii) withthe hydrodynamic pattern in the area. Plankton samples from surveys in 1995 and 1998 were analysedin order to study the spatial distribution of hake (Merlucciusmerluccius) eggs and larvae. The cruises covered an extensivearea from the south of the Bay of Biscay to the north-west ofIreland. This spatial distribution has been interpreted in relationto the direction and intensity of the dominant winds. An importantdecrease of eggs (69%) and larvae (27%) was observed from 1995to 1998. Hake showed continuous spawning from February to Julyin the area. The centroids of hake egg distribution indicateda northward displacement of the peak of spawning as the seasonprogresses. Spawning of hake was located close to the 200 mdepth isobath in the southern area (Bay of Biscay) and it spreadover the shelf in the area of the Celtic Sea. Eggs were mostabundant at 20 m depth temperatures between 12 and 12.5°C.The centroids of hake larvae distribution also showed a northwarddisplacement although not as strong as that of hake eggs. Thespatial distribution of hake larvae by size ranges showed importantdifferences between years: in 1995 it suggested inshore transportof larvae, from the spawning areas (close to the 200 m depthisobath) to nursery areas (closer to the coast) while in 1998it suggested offshore transport. This transport does not correspondwith the general wind regimes during those years. Thereforeit is concluded that the transport of the hake larvae to nurseryareas must be controlled by different hydrographic mechanismssuch as geostrophic currents in the Bay of Biscay and tidalcurrents in the northern areas.  相似文献

The Eastern English Channel is known for its strong hydrodynamics.Tidal and residual currents are reinforced by the south-westerndominant wind and drift waters from the English Channel to theNorth Sea. Previous spatial studies have shown that the advectionof larvae could differ from one species to another. Flounder(Pleuronectes flesus) larvae were found offshore, drifting tothe north until the fins were formed; then they were found nearthe coast. However, sole (Solea solea) larvae remained in coastalwaters during their development. The difference in larval spatialdistribution is assumed to be related to the interaction betweenvertical migration and advection by alternative tidal currents,leading to a selective tidal stream transport. To describe thevertical distribution of these larvae, two strategies were used.First, a Eulerian study was carried out with samples taken atthe same geographical location every 1.5 h for 41 h. Ichthyoplanktonwere collected in the water mass using a Bongo net and witha suprabenthic multi-net sledge, at four layers above the seabed, between 0.1 and 1.4 m. Secondly, to enable water movementto be disregarded, a Lagrangian study was carried out by usinga Bongo net every 3 h, following a drifting buoy for 3 days.The results show that even during the youngest stages, solelarvae are able to perform tidal and diel vertical migration.We assume that they may limit their advection to the North Seabecause of their upward migration during ebb and at night, whichmay enable them to remain in the same area dealing with thecurrents. Flounder larvae begin their vertical migration atthe stage of notochord flexion, which ends their drift to thenorth. The larvae reach the bottom of the water column, particularlyduring ebb when they are concentrated in the first 40 cm abovethe bottom. This behaviour favours their advection during flow,leading to efficient and fast transport towards the coast.  相似文献

Feeding invertebrate larvae may be food limited while developingin the ocean. If they are, then their time in the plankton isprolonged, which likely increases mortality. Food limitationcould be due to the quantity and/or quality of the food available.In an effort to answer how food type influences larval nutrition,we compared growth, development and lipid deposition for Dendrasterexcentricus larvae reared in natural seawater from two depths(1 and 20 m) and in filtered seawater on a monoculture laboratorydiet of 6 cells µL–1 of the green alga Dunaliellatertiolecta (Butcher). Five days post-fertilization, larvaereared on the laboratory diet had developed to the latest stage,were the largest and had lipid deposits. Larvae reared on naturalsurface water were intermediate in size and developmental stage,and larvae reared in the water from 20 m depth were the smallestand developed the slowest. This trend continued at 8 days post-fertilizationwhen surface water diet larvae were similar in size to laboratorydiet larvae, but their juvenile rudiments were significantlysmaller. To assess food availability in each food treatment,we compared the concentration of chlorophyll (Chl) a, b andc in natural seawater from each depth and in D. tertiolectaculture in filtered seawater. Natural seawater collected fromthe surface had the highest concentration of Chl a and c, whereasChl b was not significantly different between treatments. IncreasedChl concentrations in the surface water are likely due to higherconcentrations of diatoms and dinoflagellates, which are typicallynot high-quality food items for echinoid larvae. Our resultssupport a hypothesis that echinoid larvae in the water columnmay be limited by food quality.  相似文献

This study presents results of the vertical behaviour of theEuropean sardine (Sardina pilchardus) larvae as observed atsea off the NW Iberian coast during an oceanographic cruiseconducted in May 2002. Samples were taken in a grid of 38 stations(conductivity-temperature-depth [CTD] measurements and LonghurstHardy Plankton Recorder [LHPR] plankton hauls); a 69-h fixedstation study was also performed (hourly CTD measurements andLHPR/neuston hauls every 2 h). The horizontal distribution oflarvae is closely related to the circulation patterns measuredby a current metre-mooring array deployed during the cruise.Larvae were mainly distributed in the upper 20–25 m ofthe water column, in evident association with the waters ofthe Western Iberia Buoyant Plume (WIBP). Large (older) larvaeare found mainly in the surface layers, and larval size decreaseswith depth. A diel rhythm of migration to the neuston layerwas observed, correlated with the inflation/deflation activityof the swim bladder. Larvae with lengths greater than 12.5 mmand inflated swim bladders were only found in this layer. Consideringthe near surface stratification conditions for food availabilityand Ekman transport in the upper few metres, even small verticalmigrations of larvae can be very important for their survivaland subsequent recruitment success.  相似文献

We determined the productivity (µg C µg–1Chi a h–1) of size-fractionated phytoplankton in the northernNorth Pacific and the Bering Sea in summer and winter. Picoplankton(<2 µm) were more productive than larger sized phytoplankton(2–10 and 10–200 µm) in the subtropical region,where the in situ temperature was >10°C; whereas picoplanktonin the subarctic region were similar in productivity or lessproductive than larger sized plankton, where the in situ temperaturewas <10°C. The result from the subtropical region inthis study agrees with previous results from tropical and subtropical waters, which indicate that phytoplankton productivitytends to decrease with increasing cell size. The result fromthe subarctic region, however, differs from previous results.We observed a positive linear regression for in situ temperatureand picoplankton productivity, but this trend was not seen inthe larger sized phytoplankton. The results show that the productivityof picoplankton is markedly influenced by in situ temperaturecompared with that of larger sized plankton. Low tem peratureappears to account largely for the observation that the productivityof picoplankton is not significantly higher than that of largersized phytoplankton in the subarctic region.  相似文献

Copepod grazing on the toxic dinofiagellate Dinophysis acuminatafrom the west coast of France (La Rochelle) was studied witha concentrated (40–70 µm) phytoplankton assemblagedominated by Leptocylindrus danicus, D.acuminata, Ceratium fususand Ceratium furca. Copepod nauplii were also present. Threeto five copepods/copepodites (Acartia clausi, Isias clavipesand Centropages typicus) were incubated together with the phytoplankton.Dinophysis acuminata was grazed upon by all copepod species.However, to some extent, I.clavipes and C.typicus avoided itas food. Dinophysis acuminata cells represented for them only5–10% of total ingested carbon during the first 24 h,and almost all individuals survived and thrived well. In contrast,A.clausi did not avoid D.acuminata. which represented 30% ofingested carbon in 1 day. Acartia clausi then had a lower survivalthan the two other copepod species. However, the survival ofA.clausi was high in control incubations, where a plankton communitywithout D.acuminata was used as food. It is concluded that theokadaic acid of D acuminata is potentially toxic to some grazers,and/or might function as an allelopathic grazer repellent.  相似文献

Zooplankton composition and distribution off the coast of Galicia, Spain   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
During June and September 1984, zooplankton samples were collectedwith other hydrographic and biological data along the Galiciancoast (NW of Spain). In June copepods contributed {small tilde}60%to the total zooplankton community, with larvaceans, siphonophoresand cladocerans also abundant. In September >90% of the zooplanktonsampled were copepods. The dominant species of copepods in bothJune and September were Acartia clausi, Paracalanus parvus andTemora longicornis. The meroplankton was dominated by echinoderms,bryozoans, barnacle larvae and bivalve larvae. In June the averagezooplankton biomass was 31.08 mg C m–3; the Septemberaverage was 41.69 mg C m–3. The relationship between theslopes of the regression equations (biomass versus abundance)suggests that the zooplankton assemblage in June was composedby larger animals than in September. The major concentrationof zooplankton was between 0 and 50 m, with both June and Septemberdaytime surface samples having 6–7 times the amount oforganisms than the lower water column (50–100 m). Therewere no distinct differences in total zooplankton abundancesat the inshore and offshore stations; however, the inshore stationsoften had a higher percentage of meroplankton than the offshorestations. In June zooplankton abundance at the northern transectsand the western transects was similar. In September there weregreater concentrations of zooplankton in the western Galicianshelf as compared with the northern shelf. These differencesin the horizontal distribution of the zooplankton were relatedto upwelling events.  相似文献
