The biomass and abundance of large jellyfish (Cnidaria: Scyphozoa, Hydrozoa) was estimated and their seasonal and interannual dynamics was studied based on the data of trawl surveys conducted by the Pacific Research Fisheries Center (TINRO Center) in the Sea of Okhotsk, Bering Sea, Sea of Japan, and the Northwestern Pacific Ocean (NWPO) in 1991–2009. Most of the jellyfish biomass (over 95%) in the Sea of Okhotsk, Bering Sea, and NWPO was formed by Chrysaora spp., Cyanea capillata, Aequorea spp., Phacellophora camtschatica, and Aurelia limbata. The same species along with Calycopsis nematophora predominated in abundance in the Bering Sea and NWPO, while Ptychogena lactea, C. capillata, and Chrysaora spp. were most abundant in the Sea of Okhotsk. In the northwestern Sea of Japan, Aurelia aurita, C. capillata, and Aequorea spp. predominated both in abundance and biomass. Generally, the jellyfish abundance reached the highest values in the summer and fall and decreased abruptly in the winter. Meanwhile, the seasonal dynamics proved to be specific for each species and were manifested in some of them by reaching maximum values at various periods of the warm season, whereas the other (Tima sachalinensis and P. lactea) showed the reverse pattern of seasonal variations, with the highest abundance in cold months. Jellyfish biomass and abundance varied greatly from year to year, which was related to the short lifecycle and alternation between sexual and asexual generations, in which reproductive success was predetermined by various environmental factors. In the fall, year-to-year fluctuations of the relative biomass could increase by ten times. In 1991–2009, it varied from 200 to 2000 kg/km2 in the northern Sea of Okhotsk, from 500 to 4200 kg/km2 in the northwestern Bering Sea, and from 300 to 3700 kg/km2 in the southwestern Bering Sea. Taking the jellyfish abundance estimates into account, along with the vertical distribution and the seasonal dynamics, the overall biomass of large species that occurred in trawl catches in Far Eastern seas and adjacent Pacific waters during the warm season could reach 13.0–15.0 million tons, of which up to about 6.0 million tons would be concentrated in the western Bering Sea and 5.5–6.0 million tons in the Sea of Okhotsk.  相似文献

The results of long-term research on the biology of the viviparous Fedorov eelpout Zoarces fedorovi from the Tauiskaya Guba in the Sea of Okhotsk are generalized. It was determined that in winter and spring this species inhabits strongly freshened sea areas and in summer and fall it inhabits, as a rule, estuarine areas in the tide effect zone. Z. fedorovi did not leave the coastal zone, even during the ebb, and could remain in colder fresh water up to 12 h a day. Data on the age, sexual and size structure of the catches, character of linear growth, increase in body mass and fecundity, size, as well as the growth rates of the larvae and fry during prenatal development of Z. fedorovi are cited.  相似文献

The genetic variability of ten microsatellite loci was examined in samples of the herring from the Sea of Okhotsk and the Bering Sea. All loci were polymorphic; the expected heterozygosity estimates varied in the range of 0.3–94.3% (mean 66.7%). The degree of genetic differentiation of the herring was statistically significant (θ = 1.38%). The level of pairwise genetic differentiation FST was–0.002–0.046; RST was–0.003–0.166. Genetic differentiation of the herring from the Sea of Okhotsk and the Bering Sea correlated with the spatial-geographic structure of the species in the studied range on the basis of FST (P = 0.001).  相似文献

Ichthyoplankton of the Sea of Okhotsk from October to December 2007 comprised larvae and fry of eight fish species belonging to five families. The larvae of lord Hemilepidotus gilberti, white-spotted greenling Hexagrammos stelleri, and Atka mackerel Pleurogrammus monopterygius were the most widespread and numerous in the study period. Fish larvae from October to December 2007 were seined over the vast water area of the Sea of Okhotsk, maximum catches were made in waters of western Kamchatka. The food spectrum of larvae of five fish species (H. gilberti, Hexagrammos octogrammus, H. stelleri, P. monopterygius, and Bathymaster signatus) included approximately 20 plankters. Irrespective of species belonging, copepods Pseudocalanus minutus and Oithona similis, eggs and nauplii of copepods, as well as juveniles of pteropods were common food items for all fish. Larvae of all considered fish species in the Sea of Okhotsk fed mainly during the light hours of the day.  相似文献

Materials from six complex trawl surveys conducted by the TINRO-Center in the upper epipelagic zone of the Western Bering Sea during the summer-fall seasons from 2002 through 2006 were used as the basis of this paper. The overall biomass (and abundance) of jellyfish increased from 0.6–0.8 million t (1.1–1.8 billion individuals) in the summer up to 0.9–1.7 million t (4.4–4.8 billion individuals) in fall. Scyphomedusa Chrysaora melanaster and the Hydromedusa Aequorea forskalea made up the major part of the jellyfish biomass (67–97%). Their distribution varied significantly. A. forskalea aggregated mainly in the deepwater part of the Bering Sea. Ch. melanaster was widely dispersed across the entire area of the investigations and formed the most considerable aggregations in the Anadyr-Navarin area. In the fall of 2006 the diet of jellyfish generally consisted of plankton organisms (copepods, euphausiids, amphipods, pteropods, chaetognaths, ostracods, and larval decapods). However, Ch. melanaster had a greater portion of fish and larval squid in its diet.  相似文献

Oithona similis is an abundant but poorly studied cyclopoidcopepod in the brackish Central Baltic Sea. We describe thespatio-temporal distribution of O. similis in a Central Balticdeep basin (Bornholm Basin) during spring and summer 1999. Usingvertically resolving sampling in parallel with hydrographicmeasurements, we found the copepod to dwell in the permanenthalocline characteristic of a Central Baltic deep basin. Thehabitat of O. similis is thus limited from above by low salinityand from below by low oxygen conditions, both characteristicfor the area. Horizontally resolving sampling yielded abundancesurfaces which were compared by analysis of variance showingsimilar patterns among sampling dates. Comparison with flowfields from a three-dimensional hydrodynamic model suggeststhat the horizontal distribution is primarily the result ofcirculation in the dwelling depth. The study shows how the physicalenvironment in the area determines the spatial distributionwhich might affect abundance and production of this copepod.  相似文献

Limb loss and the frequency of regeneration was investigated in the male blue king crabParalithodes platypus collected in the Sea of Okhotsk and the Bering Sea. TheP. platypus population in the Bering Sea is characterized by an anomalously high proportion of crabs with missing limbs, which is largely due to the intensive fishing. The present approach to the exploitation of the Bering Sea population, in which large intact crabs are removed and injured crabs are left to recover to the normal state, may result in a decline in the reproductive potential of this population as early as this coming year.  相似文献

The content of biologically active polypeptides in aqueous and ethanol extracts of seven sea anemone species collected near Sakhalin Island (Sea of Okhotsk) and in Posyet Bay (Sea of Japan) was analyzed. Water extracts of the sea anemone Cribrinopsis similis showed the highest hemolytic activity, while ethanol extracts proved to have toxic properties. The levels of toxic and hemolytic activity of extracts of sea anemones inhabiting northern temperate waters were 2 to 3 orders of magnitude lower, compared to tropic species. The reason for this is likely to be the differences in the habitat conditions and biological traits of these animals. The water extracts of all species possessed proteolytic, phospholipase A2, and low DNAase activities, except Actinostola sp., whose aqueous extract contained a high activity alkaline DNAase. The species studied contained a wide range of proteinase inhibitors, O-glycosyl hydrolases (glycosidases and polysaccharide hydrolases). Water extracts of C. similis and Stomphia coccinea possessed the highest laminarinase activity. High activity of N-galactopyranosidase was found in water extracts of S. coccinea and Oulactis orientalis.  相似文献

The distribution and abundance of jellyfish of the family Ulmaridae was studied based on the data of trawl surveys conducted in the Sea of Okhotsk (1998–2006) and the Sea of Japan (2003) in the fall. The jellyfish Aurelia aurita mainly inhabits the waters of the Sea of Japan, while in the Sea of Okhotsk small quantities of this species were recorded in southern areas, and solitary individuals, off North Sakhalin. Aurelia limbata tends to shelf waters of the Sea of Okhotsk, being less abundant in the southern deepwater area and in the Sea of Japan. Phacellophora camtschatica, in contrast, aggregates mostly over deep basins, whereas in shallow areas a significant quantity of this species was found only off West Kamchatka. In the northern Sea of Okhotsk, the species A. limbata dominated in biomass and abundance among Ulmaridae. During the studied period, its biomass varied from 27 to 803 kg/km2 and its abundance varied from 69 to 1706 ind/km2. In the southern Sea of Okhotsk, as a rule, P. camtschatica prevailed (1–16 kg/km2 and 6–46 ind/km2). In the Sea of Japan, the most abundant species was A. aurita (29 kg/km2 and 104 ind/km2). The jellyfish size structure in catches is presented.  相似文献

The intentional introduction of red king crab, Paralithodes camtschatica (Tilesius, 1815) in the Barents Sea represent one of a few successful cases and one that now supports a commercial fishery. Introductions of alien species into new environments are often associated with genetic bottlenecks, which cause a reduction in the genetic variation, and this could be important for the spreading potential of the species in the Atlantic Ocean. Red king crab samples collected in the Varangerfjord located on the Barents Sea (northern Norway) were compared with reference crab samples collected from the Bering Sea and Kamchatka regions in the Pacific Ocean. All samples were screened for eleven microsatellite loci, based on the development of species-specific primers. The observed number of alleles per locus was similar, and no reduction in genetic variation, including gene diversity and allelic richness, was detected between the Varangerfjord sample and the reference sample from Okhotsk Sea near Kamchatka, indicating no genetic bottlenecking at least for the microsatellite loci investigated. The same results were found in comparison with the sample from Bering Sea. The level of genetic differentiation among the samples, measured as overall F ST across all loci, was relatively low (0.0238) with a range of 0.0035–0.1000 for the various loci investigated. The largest pairwise F ST values were found between the Bering Sea and Varangerfjord/Barents Sea samples, with a value of 0.0194 across all loci tested. The lowest value (0.0101) was found between the Varangerfjord and Kamchatka samples. Genetic differentiation based on exact tests on allele frequencies revealed highly significant differences between all pairwise comparisons. The high level of genetic variation found in the Varangerfjord/Barents Sea sample could be of significance with respect to further spreading of the species to other regions in the North Atlantic Ocean.  相似文献

Production parameters for bacterioplankton were assessed during the spring–summer period in the western parts of the Sea of Okhotsk and the Bering Sea, as well as in northwestern Pacific Ocean. The lowest values of bacterial production were observed in early June during the spring phytoplankton bloom (0.08 mg C day–1 m–3), while the maximum values (up to 55 mg C day–1 m–3) occurred in late July?early August, 1.5 to 2 months after the bloom. The concentration of dissolved organic matter, the substrate for bacterioplankton, was assessed using satellite data. The ratio between bacterial and primary production in the surface samples varied from 0.5% at the peak of phytoplankton bloom to 180% at the peak of bacterioplankton development.  相似文献

Walleye pollock Theragra chalcogramma Pallas occupies a central place in ecosystems of the North Pacific and is an important target species of fisheries. The species is characterized by daily vertical, spawning, feeding, and wintering migrations and spawning occurring under the sea ice. Since population structure estimation by the tagging with recapture is inefficient in walleye pollock, the pollock resources are difficult to estimate by conventional methods, requiring population genetic studies with molecular markers. The population genetic structure of five spawning aggregations from the Bering Sea was for the first time studied with ten microsatellite loci: Tch5, Tch10, Tch11, Tch12, Tch14, Tch16, Tch17, Tch19, Tch20, and Tch22. A spatially distant sample from the Sea of Okhotsk was used as a reference group. Polymorphism for the markers reached 100%, and heterozygosity of individual loci ranged from 41 to 95% in different populations. It was shown the aggregations of interest are in goodness-to-fit the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) at hole, while the Sea of Okhotsk sample demonstrated a sex bias: the heterozygosity at Tch16 in males was significantly lower than in females. The highest discriminative power was observed for Tch10, Tch20, and Tch22. F ST genetic distances between populations were typical for marine fishes. A mixed composition was supposed for the sample from the region of the underwater Shirshov Ridge, which serves as a natural partial geographic barrier between the Olyutor-Karagin and Koryak walleye pollock stocks. With the Shirshov sample excluded, F ST scatter plots and the spatial autocorrelation approach supported isolation by distance for the aggregations. An influence of abiotic factors on the population structure was assumed for walleye pollock of the Bering Sea.  相似文献

The liparid fish Liparis marmoratus is redescribed based on examination of two syntypes and two additional specimens. Liparis marmoratus is distinguished from other Sea of Okhotsk and Bering Sea Liparis by having a wide head, small mouth, short blunt snout, closely set chin pores, small gill opening, a firm body with slightly developed subcutaneous gelatinous tissue, a nearly horizontal dorsal body profile, and unique body markings and coloration. Liparis marmoratus was previously known only from the Sea of Okhotsk. A Liparis specimen collected near St. Lawrence Island in the northern Bering Sea was compared to the type series and determined to be L. marmoratus. Genetic differentiation of the Pacific cod Gadus macrocephalus was studied. Samples from six regions of the Sea of Okhotsk and the Bering Sea were analyzed with two mtDNA genetic markers-gene of cytochrome 1 and the control region (D-loop). Comparative analysis showed significant genetic differentiation between the two groups of samples. The first group included samples from Tauiskaya Bay and waters of Western Kamchatka. The second group consisted of the samples collected in the waters of the Iturup Island (Sea of Okhotsk), Northern Kurile Islands, Navarin region of the Bering Sea, and Anadyr Bay.  相似文献

The Western Arctic bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus) is highly adapted to sea ice and annually migrates through the Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort seas. While the overall distribution and seasonal movements of bowhead whales are mostly understood, information about their distribution in the Alaskan Beaufort Sea in early to mid-summer has not been well documented. In July 2011, we conducted an exploratory flight in the Alaskan Beaufort Sea, north of Camden Bay (71°N 144°W), near the location of a single satellite-tagged bowhead whale. Eighteen bowhead whales were observed, and behavior consistent with feeding was documented. To our knowledge, this is the first documentation of behavior consistent with feeding north of Camden Bay in mid-July. Few studies have focused on bowhead whale distribution in the Alaskan Beaufort Sea in early to mid-summer, and no long-term, region-wide surveys have been conducted during summer. Bowhead whales are already exposed to anthropogenic disturbance in the Canadian Beaufort Sea in summer, the Alaskan Beaufort Sea in fall, and the Chukchi and Bering seas from fall through spring. The presence of bowhead whale aggregations in the Alaskan Beaufort Sea in summer should be considered when assessing the cumulative effects of human-related activities.  相似文献

The histological study of the adult specimens of walleye pollock Theragra chalcogramma carrying filamentous gonads evidenced that this group comprised males, females, and sterile fish. The specimens carrying the filamentous gonads have been found mostly in the elder age groups; no maturing of the oocytes or sperm cells has been registered. The frequency of occurrence of such specimens was relatively low: 0.07–0.13% in the Sea of Okhotsk and up to 0.25% in the Bering Sea. We conclude that these specimens have nearly no effect on the reproductive success of this species.  相似文献

Fish biology and fisheries ecology of the Salton Sea, California   总被引:7,自引:7,他引:0
Studies of the fisheries ecology and fish biology of the Salton Sea, California, were conducted in 1999 and 2000 using 50 m gill nets in river, nearshore, pelagic, and estuarine areas. Total lengths and weights were measured for all fish captured, and sub-samples were dissected for gonad weights and aging. Ten fish species were captured of which a hybrid tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicusx O. urolepis hornorum) was dominant by number and weight. Nearshore and estuarine areas had highest catch rates (over 11 kg h–1 net–1 for tilapia). Rivers were richest in the number of species (6 of 10 species were exclusively riverine), but lowest in fish abundance. Orangemouth corvina (Cynoscion xanthulus), bairdiella (Bairdiella icistia), sargo (Anisotremus davidsoni), and tilapia grew faster, but had shorter life spans than conspecifics elsewhere and Salton Sea conspecifics of 50 years ago. Reproduction occurred mostly in the nearshore and estuarine areas. Onset of reproduction of bairdiella and sargo was in the spring and extended through the beginning of summer. Reproduction of orangemouth corvina started in the summer and of tilapia in the spring. Reproduction of orangemouth corvina and tilapia extended through the fall. Gender ratios of tilapia were skewed toward males in all areas, except the rivers, where females predominated. All four species aggregated along the nearshore and estuarine areas in the summer when dissolved oxygen in the pelagic area was limited. Any restoration alternative for the Salton Sea should consider areas close to shore as primary areas for fish reproduction and survival.  相似文献

The population genetic structure of yellowfin sole inhabiting the northern part of the Okhotsk Sea has been investigated. The genetic heterogeneity of samples collected in geographically remote areas of Taui Bay was determined. The value of genetic differentiation (G ST = 2.39%) in the studied samples was slightly lower than in those from the Bering Sea (G ST = 4.25%) (Grant et al., 1983).  相似文献

Based on complex epipelagic surveys in the western Bering Sea, a comparative analysis of food supply of Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) was conducted in summer and fall from 2002 to 2006. Nine indirect indices of food supply used in the study were as follows: feeding similarity, width of the feeding spectrum, diet feeding ration, diet feeding rhythms, fraction of accessory food in the ration, growth rate of the fish, abundance of food resources, and abundance of salmon. The food supply of salmon is lower in summer 2003 and fall 2006 in comparison to the food supply in other years of the study. However, well expressed feeding selectivity, consumption of prey items of certain type, and small proportion of accessory food (copepods and chaetognaths) prevailed in plankton, suggests the presence of sufficient food resources for Pacific salmon in the western Bering Sea.  相似文献

The mortality rates of the copepodite IV-copepodite V and copepodite V-adult individuals pairs in the populations of one of the most common species of planktonic copepod, Oithona similis, were estimated for the first time in the Barents and White seas. The average parameters were 0.060 and 0.082/day, respectively, in the Barents Sea and 0.166 and 0.120/day in the White Sea. In the Barents Sea, the mortality rates of O. similis significantly increased with an increase in water temperature and in the White Sea a significant decrease occurred with an increase in salinity. It was concluded that the mortality rate of this species is determined first by abiotic factors and that biotic factors are of secondary significance.  相似文献
