The claim by Dungan et al. (2002) that “in many areas possums may be the only potential dispersal vector for large-seeded native species” is unsubstantiated. There is little evidence possums excrete viable seed of large-seeded fruit greater than 10 mm diameter, and seeds up to this size are dispersed by a suite of bird species. Nowhere in New Zealand are there likely to be possums in the absence of this suite of bird species.  相似文献

Inactive β-fructofuranosidase molecules in senescent tomato fruit   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The present paper deals with the formation of altered molecules of β-fructofuranosidase (β-FFase, EC 3.2.1.26) in the cell wall fraction of tomato fruit in relation to aging. The monospecific antibody prepared from rabbits was used to characterize enzymes at ripened and senescent stages of tomato fruits. Although the activity on a fresh weight basis and the specific activity of the crude extract declined as the fruit aged, no difference was observed in the amount of the enzyme protein on a fr. wt basis between the two stages. With purified enzyme, there was little difference in such properties as Km, heat stability and optimum pH. However, the purified β-FFase from the senescent fruits had a lower specific activity. It is concluded from the results that the decline in the enzyme activity in the senescent fruits is due to the occurrence of immunologically active but catalytically inactive molecules of β-FFase.  相似文献

Harvest of Brazil nuts from the large, iconic tree Bertholletia excelsa generates substantial income for smallholders, providing a strong incentive to conserve the mature forests where it grows. Although much previous work has focused on the impact of nut harvest on new seedling recruits into B. excelsa populations, the connection between harvest rates and long‐term population stability is still unclear. Moreover, there is additional uncertainty for Brazil nut management in terms of population response to climate change and other anthropogenic influences. We drew on 14 years of research in two sites in Acre, Brazil with different B. excelsa nut harvest intensities (39% and 81%), to produce stochastic and deterministic matrix population models which incorporated parameter uncertainty in vital rates. Adult abundance was projected to remain close to the current observed abundance or higher through the next 50 years. Elasticity analyses revealed that the asymptotic population growth rate (λ) was most sensitive to stasis vital rates in sapling, juvenile, and adult stages. Deterministic transition matrices calculated using diameter growth rates dependent on rainfall yielded average λ values around 1.0 under extreme high, extreme low, and average annual rainfall. While sustained high rates of Brazil nut harvest and climate change could potentially negatively impact B. excelsa populations, changes in human use of the forested landscape are more immediate concern. To reduce the risk of population decline, smallholders and managers of B. excelsa rich forests should focus on conservation of pre‐mature and mature individuals.  相似文献

In this work, five expansin cDNAs (DlExp15) from ‘Shijia’ longan fruit were isolated and characterized. Moreover, the expression profiles of five expansin genes and the effect of naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) and thidiazuron (TDZ) on their expressions were investigated. The results showed that five expansins exhibited different expression patterns during fruit growth and development. DlExp1 was constitutively expressed in the pericarp while the levels of DlExp1 mRNA in the aril were very high at early stage of fruit development, and decreased gradually from 28 to 77 days after anthesis (DAA). DlExp2 and DlExp4 were related to the growth of pericarp, whereas the expression of DlExp2 and DlExp5 in the aril decreased from 28 to 77 DAA. In addition, NAA and TDZ applied at the stage of rapid pericarp (21 DAA) or aril growth (56 DAA) increased the accumulations of DlExp1 and DlExp2 mRNA in the pericarp and aril, while NAA and TDZ had no or little effect on the accumulations of DlExp3, DlExp4 and DlExp5. DlExp1 and DlExp2 also accumulated highly in rapidly growing tissues, such as young stems and leaves. These findings indicated that Exp genes played a different role in longan fruit growth and showed different response to plant growth substances.  相似文献

The ripening-related pepper endo-1,4--D-glucanase (EGase) CaCel1 was over-expressed in transgenic tomato plants under the control of the constitutive 35S promoter to investigate the effects on plant growth and fruit softening of high levels of a potential cell wall-degrading activity. In transgenic fruit, recombinant CaCel1 protein was associated with a high-salt putative cell wall fraction, and extractable CMCase activity was increased by up to 20-fold relative to controls. However, the effects of high levels of EGase activity on fruit cell wall metabolism were relatively small. The largest consequence observed was a decrease of up to 20% in the amount of matrix glycans in a 24% KOH-soluble fraction consisting of polysaccharides tightly bound to cellulose. This decrease was confined to polysaccharides other than xyloglucan, did not affect the size distribution of remaining molecules, and was not correlated with a corresponding increase in glycans in a 4% KOH-soluble fraction loosely bound to cellulose, suggesting that the missing polymers had been degraded to fragments small enough to be lost from the extracts. The amount of matrix glycans in the 4% KOH-soluble fraction was not substantially changed, but the size distribution showed a small relative increase in the amount of polymers in a peak eluting close to a linear dextran marker of 71 kDa. This could be due either to an increase in the amount of polymers of this size, or to a loss from the extract of other polymers present in peaks of higher molecular weight. Transgenic fruit were not softer than controls but appeared the same or slightly firmer at both green and red developmental stages, and no differences in plant vegetative growth were observed. CaCel1 did not cause depolymerization of tomato fruit xyloglucan in vivo, but differences in the amount or molecular weight profile of other matrix glycans were observed. The data suggest that degradation of a proportion of matrix glycans other than xyloglucan does not result in fruit softening, and that fruit softening is not limited by the amount of EGase activity present during ripening.  相似文献

We conducted a questionnaire survey to assess fruit growers’ knowledge and practices regarding fruit fly pests and a fruit fly trapping inspection to capture any fruit fly species present at 10 points of 23 wards of Marondera district. Most growers were not aware of the pest, although they had reported that fruits were rotting in orchards. Most growers therefore took no action against fruit flies on their farms. The trapping inspection confirmed that three fruit fly species, Bactrocera, Ceratitis, and Dacus, are already present in Zimbabwe in general and in Marondera district in particular and the Bactrocera species dominates. There is a need for government, through extension agents, and other stakeholders to compile and communicate accurate data on the presence and status of the fruit fly in addition to investing in the continuous monitoring of the pest.  相似文献

Is it possible to localize a memory trace to a subset of cells in the brain? If so, it should be possible to show: first, that neuronal plasticity occurs in these cells. Second, that neuronal plasticity in these cells is sufficient for memory. Third, that neuronal plasticity in these cells is necessary for memory. Fourth, that memory is abolished if these cells cannot provide output during testing. And fifth, that memory is abolished if these cells cannot receive input during training. With regard to olfactory learning in flies, we argue that the notion of the olfactory memory trace being localized to the Kenyon cells of the mushroom bodies is a reasonable working hypothesis.  相似文献

Covering apple fruits with double layer waterproof bags to enhance fruit quality and evenness of blush colour is typical on many cultivars in Korea and Japan. Aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) applied to unbagged apple fruits at 3–4 weeks before commercial harvest reduces ethylene production in the fruit, delays fruit ripening and reduces pre-harvest fruit drop. Spray application of AVG to trees of bagged apples should have no effect on apple ripening as there is␣no direct contact with the fruit and the translocation of AVG in apple trees is regarded as negligible. However, preliminary experiments suggested that AVG applied to trees of bagged apples reduced pre-harvest fruit drop in “Kotgetsu” apples. This study investigated the effect of spray treatments of 125 ppm of AVG on fruit drop, fruit ripening (firmness, starch conversion and soluble solids) and ethylene production to whole trees with bagged or unbagged “Kogetsu” fruit, as well as sprays of only the bagged or unbagged fruit on trees on two orchards. AVG applied to whole trees with unbagged apples reduced fruit drop from an average of 58.9% to 10.4%, delayed starch conversion and decreased ethylene production. AVG applied to whole trees with bagged fruit was equally effective in reducing pre-harvest drop, delaying fruit ripening and reducing ethylene production. Application of AVG to unbagged fruit only was nearly as effective as application to whole trees with unbagged fruit but application to bagged fruit only had no effect on fruit ripening or ethylene production. Application of AVG to bagged fruit only did reduce fruit drop to an average of 42.5% but this was not as effective as spraying unbagged fruit only or whole trees with bagged fruit. Possible mechanisms for this effect are discussed.  相似文献

The Kentucky coffeetree (Gymnocladus dioicus, Fabaceae) is an ecological paradox. A rare tree in nature in eastern and central North America, G. dioicus produces legumes that are only known to be dispersed by water, but appear similar to fruits consumed and dispersed by elephants and rhinoceros. One would expect the pods to be consumed by livestock, but the pulp and seeds are toxic to cattle and sheep. We examine the puzzle of G. dioicus dispersal in light of its other reproductive and life history characteristics and find that it probably is a botanical anachronism, in terms of both a set of dispersal agents long extinct and habitats, including what we term megafaunal disclimaxes, which have disappeared. Large seeds, the megafaunal gestault of the fruit, a dioecious mating system, and shade-intolerance combined with vigorous cloning suggest a widely dispersed pioneer of Miocene through Pleistocene habitats profoundly altered by large-mammal herbivory. As to what ate it, we can only say there were once many candidates. We hypothesize that the plant is an ecological anachronism, sinking to extinction in the wild.  相似文献

Dasypyrum villosum (2n=14), a Mediterranean grass species of the Triticeae, exhibits intraindividual fruit colour polymorphism from pale yellow to almost black. Several studies have reported differences between the plants emerging from pale and dark fruits. They include histone content in root meristem nuclei, cell cycle duration, heterochromatin banding pattern, frequency of a tandemly repeated sequence, and nuclear genome size. In the present study, we examine whether the reports of genome size being up to 1.24-fold larger in seedlings from the lighter caryopses are reproducible. In all, 29 accessions from various countries, totaling 186 plants, were investigated for genome size using flow cytometry with propidium iodide as the DNA stain. Individuals differed 1.12-fold at most and accessions 1.07-fold. The mean genome size (1C-value) was 5.07 pg or 4954 Mbp. Within-accession comparisons of seedlings derived from light and dark caryopses were insignificant (P>0.100). Thus, we found no evidence for a modificatory genome size plasticity in D. villosum. In the light of our data, the previously reported genome size variation, up to 1.66-fold within populations and 1.67-fold between populations, appears unrealistically high. Suboptimal technical procedures for quantitative Feulgen staining are probably responsible for these earlier observations.  相似文献

During two consecutive years (2010 and 2011) we evaluated the impact of Progerbalin LG® (mixture of gibberellins (GA4+7) and N 6-benzyladenine) on fruit weight, fruit dimensions, elongation, geometric mean diameter or fruit size, aspect ratio, surface area and fruit volume of five apple cultivars belonging to ‘Red Delicious’ group (‘Hapke’ grafted on M.9 and M.26, ‘Hi Red’, ‘Starking’ and ‘Top Red’ on M.9, and ‘Red Chief Camspur’ on MM.106 rootstock). Trees were sprayed twice with 30, 50 or 100 ml L?1 i.e. between 80 % of open flowers and the following petal fall (first treatment), and 10 days after first application (second treatment); control trees were not sprayed. Results showed that the lowest dose increased fruit weight in all cultivars, except ‘Top Red’ and ‘Red Chief Camspur’; this dose promoted fruit dimensions, fruit size and elongation in ‘Hapke’ on both rootstocks, and also fruit dimensions, surface area and fruit volume in ‘Hi Red’. Regarding ‘Starking’, different doses of Progerbalin LG® did not affect other properties evaluated, but season played an important role in these cases. In contrast, the highest dose of this hormone improved all physical attributes in ‘Top Red’ and ‘Red Chief Camspur’, except elongation and/or aspect ratio. In some cases, good values were found in control treatment.  相似文献

The astounding morphological diversity exhibited by the fruits of vertebrate-dispersed plants has been traditionally interpreted as the adaptive outcome of divergent selective pressures exerted on plants by the broad array of frugivorous animals involved in seed dispersal. Although the selective capacity of frugivores provides support to this interpretation, recent studies have challenged it by documenting a strong phylogenetic component associated to interspecific variation in most fruit characteristics. Size-related fruit traits provide a conspicuous exception to this pattern, because they exhibit considerable variation at the between-species level which is largely independent of phylogeny and is correlated with consumption by differently-sized dispersal agents. Substantial species-level variance in size-related traits may reflect genuine disperser-driven diversification, but may also be partly influenced by correlated evolution of fruit size with the size of other plant structures. This latter possibility is tested here for bird-dispersed plants of the Iberian Peninsula using phylogenetically independent contrasts. Results demonstrate the existence of correlated evolution of fruit and leaf size at the species level. As all the plant taxa considered have their fruits eaten, and seeds dispersed, by the same relatively reduced set of frugivorous bird species, results suggest that a significant fraction of the variation in fruit size represented in the species sample may be explained as an indirect consequence of variation in leaf size, rather than being associated with adaptive divergence related to seed dispersal agents.  相似文献

High performance liquid chromatography?Cmass spectrometry (HPLC?CMS) technique, employing a hybrid triple quadrupole/linear ion trap (QqQ/LIT) mass analyzer, was used for comprehensive metabolomic fingerprinting of several fruit juices types, prepared from expensive (orange) or relatively low-priced (apple, grapefruit) fruits. Following the automated data mining and pre-treatment step, the suitability of the multivariate HPLC?CMS metabolomic data for authentication, i.e., classification of fruit juice and adulteration detection, was assessed with the use of advanced chemometric tools (principal component analysis, PCA, and linear discrimination analysis, LDA). The LDA classification model, constructed and validated employing a highly variable samples set, was able to reliably detect 15% addition of apple or grapefruit juice to orange juice. In the final stage of this study, high performance liquid chromatography?Cquadrupole?Cquadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (HPLC?CQqTOFMS) measurements were performed in order to obtain data for identification of pre-selected marker compounds using elemental formula calculation and online databases search.  相似文献

3-Oxo-β-ionol, vomifoliol and dehydrovomifoliol were identified for the first time in fruit from Vitis vinifera. The last named compound was mainly present free in the juice while the others existed predominantly as conjugates. In the case of vomifoliol, the conjugation was with glucose, i.e. as roseoside. Hydrolytic studies on 3-oxo-α-ionol and vomifoliol gave a range of compounds which have been recognized as fruit and plant products.  相似文献

Plants of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. T5) were transformed with an antisense endo-1,4--glucanase (cellulase, EC 3.2.1.4) Cel2 transgene under the control of the constitutive cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter in order to suppress mRNA accumulation of Cel2. In two independent transgenic lines, Cel2 mRNA abundance was reduced by >95% in ripe fruit pericarp and ca. 80% in fruit abscission zones relative to non-transgenic controls. In both transgenic lines the softening of antisense Cel2 fruit pericarp measured using stress-relaxation analysis was indistinguishable from control fruit. No differences in ethylene evolution were observed between fruit of control and antisense Cel2 genotypes. However, in fruit abscission zones the suppression of Cel2 mRNA accumulation caused a significant (P<0.001) increase in the force required to cause breakage of the abscission zone at 4 days post breaker, an increase of 27% in one transgenic line and of 46% in the other transgenic line. Thus the Cel2 gene product contributes to cell wall disassembly occurring in cell separation during fruit abscission, but its role, if any, in softening or textural changes occurring in fruit pericarp during ripening was not revealed by suppression of Cel2 gene expression.  相似文献

An α-D-galactose-specific lectin from the seeds of jack fruit (Artocarpus integra) has been isolated in pure form by affinity chromatography on immobilised guar gum (a galactomannan). The lectin is shown to be a glycoprotein containing 3% carbohydrate and having a molecular weight of 39,500 as determined by gel filtration. Sodium dodecyl sulphate gel electrophoresis revealed a single polypeptide of 10,500 dalton, indicating that the native lectin is a tetrarner of identical subunits. The hemagglutinating activity of the lectin towards erythrocytes of all blood groups is found to be the same.  相似文献
