Nucleotide sequences from the mitochondrial ND4 gene and the nuclear RAG2 gene were used to derive the most extensive molecular phylogeny to date for the Neotropical cichlid subfamily Geophaginae. Previous hypotheses of relationships were tested in light of these new data and a synthesis of all existing molecular information was provided. Novel phylogenetic findings included support for : (1) a 'Big Clade' containing the genera Geophagus sensu lato, Gymnogeophagus, Mikrogeophagus, Biotodoma, Crenicara, and Dicrossus; (2) a clade including the genera Satanoperca, Apistogramma, Apistogrammoides, and Taeniacara; and (3) corroboration for Kullander's clade Acarichthyini. ND4 demonstrated saturation effects at the third code position and lineage-specific rate heterogeneity, both of which influenced phylogeny reconstruction when only equal weighted parsimony was employed. Both branch lengths and internal branch tests revealed extremely short basal nodes that add support to the idea that geophagine cichlids have experienced an adaptive radiation sensu Schluter that involved ecomorphological specializations and life history diversification.  相似文献

Activity fields and isolation fields are measured for four territorial dwarf cichlids Apistogramma ramirezi and related to spatial variation in frequencies of agonistic encounters. Trespassers evidently avoid the immediate presence of a resident but not locations of previous encounters with residents.  相似文献

The length-weight relationship is important for the study of populational dynamics. This study aimed to describe the length-weight relationships (LWR) of 11 fish species sampled on 18 streams of the Capim river basin on eastern Amazon. Specimens were captured in 2014, 2015 and 2017, using sieve nets with 2 mm of mesh size. Fixed specimens were fixed in 10% formalin and conserved in alcohol 70%, measured for standard length (SL, 0.1 cm) and total weight (W, 0.01 g). The 11 species analysed were: Hemigrammus bellottii, Hemigrammus ocellifer, Hyphessobrycon heterorhabdus, Iguanodectes rachovii, Copella arnoldi, Nannostomus trifasciatus, Apistogramma regani, Apistogramma agassizii, Gymnorhamphichthys rondoni, Hypopygus lepturus, Anablepsoides urophthalmus.  相似文献

The paper investigates the length‐weight relationship of three cichlids species for the southwestern Amazon, Acre state. The individuals were collected at five sites during one year among august/2016 and june/2017 in Quinoá stream (10°06′03.33″S/67°40′11.50″W). The individuals were collected using: seine net, 6 m length, 2.25 high, and mesh size 5 mm, two dip nets, 5 mm mesh, 30 cm width, and 50 cm in length and two sieve with 5 mm mesh, 50 cm width, and 80 cm in length. The results show that one species presented positive allometric growth (Aequidens tetramerus) and the others negative allometric growth (Apistogramma acrensis and Crenicichla semicincta).  相似文献

Synopsis The pike killifish, Belonesox belizanus, is native to Mexico and Central America and was introduced into Dade County, Florida in 1957. This study reports on the structure and reproduction of the Florida population and compares the species with other members of the family Poeciliidae. The mean standard length (SL) of mature females was about 103 mm. Most females larger than 75 mm SL contained yolked ova, fertilized eggs, or embryos. Mature males averaged about 72 mm SL, and most males larger than 55 mm SL were mature. The sex ratio was significantly skewed in favor of females among adults, but it did not differ significantly from 1:1 among immature fish. Average brood size was about 99, and there was a significant positive correlation of brood size with size of the parent female. There was no evidence of superfetation. Sizes and weights of embryos and neonates were the largest reported for the family. There was a significant decrease in mean embryo weight as development proceeded, indicating that developing embryos received little or no nutrient input from the maternal system after fertilization. The average interbrood interval of aquarium-held females was 42 days, and females stored viable sperm at least 47 days. Reproduction continued year round in the field. Laboratory-born neonates were immediately piscivorous and exhibited distinctive behavior associated with filling the swimbladder and with avoiding detection by predators.  相似文献

Life history parameters associated with reproductive biology, age, and growth of the convict cichlid (also known as the zebra cichlid) Amatitlania nigrofasciata, which was introduced into the Haebaru Reservoir on Okinawa-jima Island, were estimated using 437 specimens that ranged from 13.7 to 82.9 mm standard length (SL). Lengths of females at first maturity (SL) and 50% maturity (L 50) were estimated to be 32.2 and 37.3 mm SL, respectively. The spawning period continued throughout the year, with a peak spawning cycle from March to May 2006–2007. Observations of postovulatory follicles and tertiary yolk stage oocytes indicate that convict cichlids spawn multiple times within a year. Female cichlids that hatched during the peak spawning seasons matured after October of the same year. Batch fecundity of females (32.2–61.2 mm SL) ranged from 65 to 345 (mean ± SD = 155 ± 63). Opaque zones along the outer margins of otoliths formed annually. The maximum age of male and female cichlids was 3 years. The von Bertalanffy growth formulae (VBGF) were expressed as Lt = 57.4( 1 - e - 0.78( t + 0.91 ) ) {{\hbox{L}}_{\rm{t}}}{ = 57}{.4}\left( {1 - {e^{ - 0.78\left( {t + 0.91} \right)}}} \right) for females and Lt = 69.5( 1 - e - 1.07( t + 0.24 ) ) {{\hbox{L}}_{\rm{t}}}{ = 69}{.5}\left( {1 - {e^{ - 1.07\left( {t + 0.24} \right)}}} \right) for males. Males grew larger than females beginning from the first year. Certain life history characteristics, such as year-round spawning and early maturation, probably contributed to the successful establishment of the convict cichlid, and this species in particular is thought to adapt and become established quickly upon introduction to freshwater systems on Okinawa-jima Island.  相似文献

Cichlid fish exhibit a complex behavioral repertoire, mainly regarding social and reproductive behaviors. Nevertheless, although dwarf cichlids exhibit a remarkable diversity of behaviors, only a few studies have been conducted with these fish. Apistogramma trifasciata is a common dwarf cichlid in the Neotropics and widely used as ornamental fish. Both males and females are territorial and engage in biparental care. Here we observed the behavior of A. trifasciata males and females to construct an ethogram. We registered the parental care of a couple since the spawn until the moment when the offspring became independent. Striking behaviors were observed, such as male-male contests involving circling displays and mouth wrestling, and parental care, which involved mouth brooding and parental color change. Finally, we suggest that our results may be used to establish this species as a model for parental care and territoriality studies.  相似文献

Apistogramma inconspicua sp.n. is described from the Rio Candclaria in the Rio Guaporé drainage in Bolivia, and recorded also from Cáceres on the Rio Paraguay in Brazil. The new species is closely related to the Paraguayan species A. commbrae (Regan) and an undescribed species in the Guaporé drainage system. These species share a specialized feature in the colour pattern, viz. an expanded vertical bar on the caudal peduncle which it confluent with the caudal spot. The now presumably complete record of Paraguayan Apistogramma species allows an analytical key to be given. Of the additional species, A. borellii (Regan) and A. trifasciata (Eigenmann & Kennedy) represent two distinct lineages. Apistogramma pleurotaenia (Regan) is probably a La Plata basin species, although no localities are known, and its relationship remain obscure. The assemblage of Paraguayan Apistogramma species reflects the heterogeneity of the Paraguayan cichlid fauna as a whole.  相似文献

Feeding habits of seven cichlid species (Archocentrus octofasciatus, A. spilurus, "Cichlasoma" robertsoni, "C." synspilum, "C." urophthalmus, Petenia splendida, Thorichthys meeki) in Lake Caobas, southern Yucatan Peninsula, were studied. Samples were taken with enclosure and cast nets during the dry and rainy seasons of 1995 (day and night). The environment was characterized by measuring temperature, conductivity and pH. All individuals were below 41 mm SL (N = 281). Frequency of occurrence and prey abundance were analyzed. Main prey items were chironomids, mites, copepods, cladocerans, and ostracods. The cichlids fed mainly on zooplankton, with the partial exceptions of P. splendida (piscivore), "C." synspilum and A. spilurus (herbivores). A cluster analysis showed that the most similar trophic spectra were those of T. meeki, "C." robertsoni and "C." salvini, which were also the least diverse. "C." synspilum and A. spilurus had an intermediate distance between their diets and those of other species. The species with the most distinctive feeding composition were P. splendida (with the most diverse and equitable diet) and the omnivore A. octofasciatus (whose diet was the richest one). T. meeki showed quantitative diel, ontogenetic, and seasonal diet changes, but none between sexes. "C." robertsoni, "C." salvini and "C." synspilum differ in food habits in Caobas and in other localities, a fact that underscores the trophic adaptability of cichlids. Trophic overlap between cichlids in Caobas could imply absence of competition, perhaps because resources are abundant in the ecosystem.  相似文献

Synopsis The leptocephalous larval stages of the bonefish (Albulidae: Albula) are abundant in the coastal regions and hypersaline lagoons (esteros) throughout the Gulf of California during winter and spring. Inshore movements of leptocephali were studied by sampling the entrance to Estero Miramar, at Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico, from February to May, 1981. Thirty-three samples were taken at various times during flood tide. All but four of the samples were taken after sunset. Leptocephali were collected in all months except May. The results suggest that leptocephali enter the estero only during the first few hours of flood tide. Large numbers of larvae were observed during the day at ebb tide maintaining their near-shore position in the entrance channel. These larvae did not appear to be migrating into the estero. This, together with the absence of larvae in daytime samples, suggests that the migration is nocturnal. Most of the 667 leptocephali collected during the sampling period had completed larval growth or were just beginning the metamorphic interval. The median standard length (SL) was 61 mm and the mode was 62 mm. The largest leptocephali measured 71 mm SL. Since metamorphosis is accompanied by a decrease in length, it was concluded that the maximum size attained during larval growth is about 71 mm SL.  相似文献

The importance of species recognition to taxonomic diversity among Lake Malawi cichlids has been frequently discussed. Hybridization - the apparent breakdown of species recognition - has been observed sporadically among cichlids and has been viewed as both a constructive and a destructive force with respect to species diversity. Here we provide genetic evidence of a natural hybrid cichlid population with a unique colour phenotype and elevated levels of genetic variation. We discuss the potential evolutionary consequences of interspecific hybridization in Lake Malawi cichlids and propose that the role of hybridization in generating both genetic variability and species diversity of Lake Malawi cichlids warrants further consideration.  相似文献

In the Lake Tanganyika cichlid Lamprologus callipterus , males were >12 times heavier than females, the most extreme sexual size dimorphism in this direction among animals. L. callipterus males construct nests of empty snail shells in which the females breed. If the ancestors of L. callipterus were small cichlids, both sexes may have used shells for shelter. If the ancestors were larger, snail shells could not be used as shelters and would be important only for reproduction. In the field and the laboratory, females bred only in shells and the largest spawned in the largest shells. In the field, females chose larger shells than the average available in males' territories and did not copy the mate choice of other females. They never hid from predators in snail shells and they occurred commonly in areas without any potential shell shelters. In laboratory experiments females used shells only for reproduction and hardly for shelter. Therefore, it seems unlikely that L. callipterus descended from small shell-brooding cichlids which used shells for shelter, but more likely that the ancestors were of large or intermediate size, and that female size is constrained by the sizes of snail shells, which appear to be optimal breeding substrata.  相似文献

Development of fin-supports and fin-rays was observed in larval and juvenileChanos chanos, Chondrification of the caudal complex started at 4.70 mm SL. Ossification of the caudal elements started at 7.80 mm SL and was nearly completed at about 30 mm SL. Cartilaginous fusion of caudal elements, which occurs in hypurals of higher teleostean fishes but is not seen in lower teleosts, was observed between the neural arch of the preural centrum 1 and that of the ural centrum 1 via a small cartilage bridging the distal tips of the two arches. Caudal finrays began to develop at 6.60 mm SL, and an adult complement of principal rays was attained at 7.35 mm SL. Dorsal and anal pterygiophore elements were first evident at 6.70 mm and 6.65 mm SL, respectively. All proximal radiais were formed at 8.15 mm SL in both fins. Formation of dorsal and anal fin-rays started simultaneously at 8.60 mm SL, and adult fin-ray complements were attained at 10,00 mm and 10.70 mm SL, respectively. In the pectoral fin, the cleithrum, coraco-scapular cartilage and blade-like cartilage (fin plate) had already been formed at 4.65 mm SL. The mesocoracoid was observed to originate from the coraco-scapular cartilage and become detached from it in the course of ossification. Pectoral fin-ray formation started at 13.80 mm SL and was completed in number of rays at 20.00 mm SL. In the pelvic fin, the basipterygium was first evident at 13.00 mm SL. Pelvic fin-rays appeared at 13.80 mm SL and attained their adult count at 17.15 mm SL.  相似文献

A new, monotypic, genus is proposed for the fish hitherto known as Apistogramma ramirezi Myers & Harry, 1948. It is probably related to Geophagus Heckel and Biotodoma Eigenmann & Kennedy. It differs considerably in behaviour and morphology from other species assigned to the genus Apistogramma Regan, to which it is considered to be not very closely related.  相似文献

Synopsis Ontogenetic dietary shifts are well studied in fishes. However, these shifts are rarely correlated with habitat and morphology. This study investigates: (1) ontogenetic dietary changes in mullet; and if dietary shifts do occur (2) whether they are correlated with feeding location, feeding behavior and/or feeding morphology. Stomach contents from eight size classes, each with 25 individuals, were analyzed using a gravimetric sieve fractionation procedure, Czechanowski's Quantitative Index and cluster analysis. Core samples (5 mm deep) were also analyzed in the same manner. Morphological characters were measured to detect differences among the size classes. Cluster analysis showed three distinct trophic units for Mugil cephalus in Cross Bayou: (1) 20.0 mm standard length — 30.0 mm SL; (2) 30.0 mm SL — 40.0 mm SL; and (3) 40.0 mm SL — > 100 mm SL. Comparison of the gut contents to the sediment contents for each size class showed an increase in similarity as the fish grew. Mullet gut contents from fish 20–25 mm SL were only 45% similar based on the weights of the prey items to the sediment subsample prey items, while stomach contents from fish > 100 mm SL were 84% similar to the sediment subsample contents. Gill raker length and interraker spacing of four gill arches were allometric with respect to standard length. Prey particle size within size classes appeared to be more correlated with feeding behavior than gill interraker spacing because smaller particles than predicted by the interraker spacing were ingested. It is suggested that smaller fish may be browsing more selectively than larger fish which graze.  相似文献

The present study reports the length‐weight relationships (LWRs) of three cichlids (Crenicichla lepidota, Cichlasoma portalegrense and Geophagus brasiliensis) collected in a system of pools of the largest estuarine island of Patos lagoon, southern Brazil. Fishes were sampled during random field trips performed from April 2015 to April 2016, using a beach seine (net 5 × 2 m; mesh size 5 mm) and a hand net (diameter 45 cm, mesh size 2 mm). The LWRs for C. portalegrense are presented herein for the first time.  相似文献

Parental investment in unrelated offspring is potentially maladaptive but may be promoted by natural selection if the presence of foreign young enhances the survival of the parents' own young. We experimentally augmented broods of free-ranging convict cichlids (Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum) to test whether survival of the adopting parents' young (fry) increases, in relation to that of control broods, after the addition of smaller foreign fry, and whether such an increase can be attributed to the effect of brood dilution acting alone or to a combination of brood dilution and the effect of differential predation on adopted young. Total fry survival did not differ between experimental (E) broods and control (C) broods, but E broods had significantly more large (host) fry after 5 days and 10 days than C broods did. In E broods, small (foreign) fry suffered higher rates of predation than large fry, indicating differential predation. In E broods starting at 7.0 and 7.5 mm standard length (SL), observed fry mortalities did not differ significantly from mortalities expected from the effect of brood dilution. However, E broods starting at 8.0 mm SL had significantly lower mortalities than expected, indicating that parents that adopt smaller foreign fry can increase the survival of their own fry by the combined effects of brood dilution and differential predation. Within E broods, growth of smaller foreign fry was significantly slower than that of larger host fry, suggesting that intra-brood agonistic behaviour affects access to food for smaller fry. Therefore, increased predation and reduced growth are two negative effects that act on fry of donor parents.  相似文献

A mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) phylogeny of cichlid fish is presented for the most taxonomically inclusive data set compiled to date (64 taxa). 16S rDNA data establish with confidence relationships among major lineages of cichlids, with a general pattern congruent with previous morphological studies and less inclusive molecular phylogenies based on nuclear genes. Cichlids from Madagascar and India are the most basal groups of the family Cichlidae and sister to African–Neotropical cichlids. The cichlid phylogeny suggests drift-vicariance events, consistent with the fragmentation of Gondwana, to explain current biogeographic distributions. Important phylogenetic findings include the placement of the controversial genus Heterochromis basal among African cichlids, the South American genus Retroculus as the most basal taxon of the Neotropical cichlid assemblage, and the close relationship of the Neotropical genera Cichla with Astronotus rather than with the crenicichlines. Based on a large number of South American genera, the Neotropical cichlids are defined as a monophyletic assemblage and shown to harbor significantly higher levels of genetic variation than their African counterparts. Relative rate tests suggest that Neotropical cichlids have experienced accelerated rates of molecular evolution. But these high evolutionary rates were significantly higher among geophagine cichlids. Lake Malawi is home to more than 450 species of endemic cichlids, which provide a spectacular example of adaptive radiation. To clarify the phylogenetic relationships among these fish, we examined the presence and absence of SINEs (short interspersed repetitive elements) at orthologous loci. We identified six loci at which a SINE sequence had apparently been specifically inserted by retroposition in the common ancestor of all the investigated species of endemic cichlids in Lake Malawi. At another locus, unique sharing of a SINE sequence was evident among all the investigated species of endemic non-Mbuna cichlids with the exception of Rhamphochromis sp. The relationships were in good agreement with those deduced in previous studies with various different markers, demonstrating that the SINE method is useful for the elucidation of phylogenetic relationships among cichlids in Lake Malawi. We also characterized a locus that exhibited transspecies polymorphism with respect to the presence or absence of the SINE sequence among non-Mbuna species. This result suggests that incomplete lineage sorting and/or interspecific hybridization might have occurred or be occurring among the species in this group, which might potentially cause misinterpretation of phylogenetic data, in particular when a single-locus marker, such as a sequence in the mitochondrial DNA, is used for analysis. SUMMARY Lake Malawi (LM) cichlids have undergone heterochronic shifts in the expression of their cone opsin genes, the genes responsible for color vision. These shifts have generated species with short-, middle-, and long-wavelength-sensitive cone photoreceptors and visual systems. However, it is unclear when during the evolution of African cichlids these shifts occurred, or whether they could account for similar short- and middle-wavelength-sensitive profiles among unrelated cichlids in Lake Tanganyika (LT). To address these questions, we surveyed opsin expression in developing fry of two African cichlids, Astatotilapia burtoni from LT and Melanochromis auratus from LM. We found that A. burtoni expresses a series of three different single-cone opsins over the course of development, while M. auratus exhibits variation in the expression of only two. Neither A. burtoni nor M. auratus exhibits much variation in the expression of its double-cone opsins. These patterns reveal that A. burtoni exhibits progressive development in the sensitivity of its single-cone photoreceptors, but direct development in the sensitivity of its double-cone photoreceptors. M. auratus exhibits neotenic development in the sensitivity of both photoreceptor sets. Given the intermediate phylogenetic placement of A. burtoni between cichlids from LT and LM, our results suggest that the ancestor of LM's cichlids exhibited a progressive developmental pattern of opsin expression. These results indicate that the heterochronic shifts which produced the short- and middle-wavelength-sensitive profiles of LM's cichlids occurred recently, and suggest that the presence of similar profiles among LT's cichlids are due to parallel heterochronic shifts.  相似文献
