Summary In a previous paper, we have used the density of the population as a sort of measure of the unknown size n of the isolates in Dahlberg's model, and shown an inverse relation between the coefficient of inbreeding and the density of the arrondissements. In the present paper, as the considered communes are smaller territorial subdivisions than arrondissements, we used, instead of the density, the population size of the communes. The results are even more eloquent as before: the inbreeding coefficients are large when the observed population size is small; the relative importance of second cousin marriages (233) versus cousin marriages (222) is greater in the latest period considered. The basic data have been collected for each commune in Belgium by Centre National de Radiobiologie et de Génétique.  相似文献

Summary Production of cephamycin and clavulanic acid by Streptomyces clavuligerus is controlled by the phosphate concentration. Phosphate represses the biosynthesis of cephamycin synthetase, expandase and clavulanic acid synthetase. In the presence of 2 mM phosphate, the specific activities of expandase, cephamycin synthetase and clavulanic acid synthetase were higher than in the presence of 75 mM phosphate. The specific activity of cephamycin synthetase is maximal with an initial phosphate concentration of 10 mM, whereas the specific activity of expandase is maximal with 1 mM phosphate. A correlation between cephamycin synthetase specific activity and expandase specific activity was established at phosphate concentrations higher than 10 mM. This shows that the expandase is an important enzyme in the mechanism by which the phosphate concentration affects the biosynthesis of cephamycin.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung In der Meerschweinchenzirbeldrüse lassen sich elektronenmikroskopisch helle und dunkle Pinealzellen sowie einzelne Gliazellen nachweisen. In den bei weitem überwiegenden hellen Pinealzellen zeichnet sich ein Teil der vesicle-crowned rodlets (VCR) durch lokale Auftreibungen aus. Von VCR deutlich abzugrenzen sind die vesicle-crowned balls (VCB). Erstmalig beschrieben wird das Vorkommen von sog. Zylindern, die als Vorstufen von VCB aufgefaßt werden. In den relativ seltenen dunklen Pinealzellen, die sich durch chromatinreiche Kerne und elektronendichtes Zytoplasma auszeichnen, sind Vesikel, VCR, VCB und Zylinder seltener als in hellen Pinealzellen. Die reichlich vorhandenen marklosen Nervenfasern finden sich vor allem in perivasculären Räumen, seltener im Parenchym. Synapsen zwischen Nerven und Pinealzellen wurden nicht beobachtet. In den Zirbeldrüsen trächtiger Meerschweinchen zeichnen sich in der 2. Hälfte der Tragzeit die hellen Pinealzellen durch stärkere Lappung der Kerne, gehäuftes Auftreten von laktiven Zonen, Vermehrung von Mitochondrien, glattem ER, agranulären Vesikeln, VCR, VCB und Zylindern aus. Die dunklen Pinealzellen nehmen während der Tragzeit an Zahl zu. Post partum bilden sich diese Veränderungen innerhalb einer Woche zurück. Längerer Aufenthalt der Tiere in Dunkelheit führt zu einer Aktivierung der hellen Pinealzellen mit auffallender Vermehrung der VCR und zu einer Zunahme der dunklen Zellen. Unter Dauerbelichtung kommt es in den hellen Zellen zu einer Abnahme fast aller Zellorganellen und zu einer starken Vermehrung der VCR, die nach 70 Tagen auch Formveränderungen aufweisen. Nach Reserpinbehandlung beobachtet man eine Verminderung und degenerative Veränderungen der VCR. Es wird diskutiert, daß die VCR als prae- bzw. postsynaptische Strukturen der Erregungsübertragung von Nerven zu Pinealzellen bzw. von Pinealzellen untereinander dienen könnten.
The fine structure of the pineal gland of normal, pregnant and experimentally affected guinea-pigs
Summary By means of electron microscopy light and dark pinealocytes can be distinguished in the guinea-pig pineal gland. Glial cells are rare. In the light pinealocyte. the most frequent cell type, some vesicle-crowned rodlets (VCR) show circumscribed thickenings. From these structures vesicle-crowned balls (VCB) have to be clearly distinguished. Furthermore cylinders occur, which, it is suggested, are precursors of VCB. Dark pinealocytes characterized by chromatin-rich nuclei and electron-dense cytoplasm are rare and contain fewer vesicles, VCR, VCB and cylinders than light pinealocytes. Numerous non-myelinated nerve fibres are situated within perivascular spaces, a few also in the parenchyma. Synapses between nerve fibres and pinealocytes were not observed. In the pineal gland of pregnant guinea-pigs the following changes can be observed in the second half of gestation. The light cells show many nuclear indentations and an increase of active zones, mitochondria, smooth ER, agranular vesicles, VCR, VCB, and cylinders respectively. The dark cells increase in number. After birth these changes reverse to normal within one week. Constant darkness leads to an activation of the light cells accompanied by an increase of the VCR and to an increase in number of the dark cells. Under constant illumination the light cells show a decrease of their organelles and a strong increase of the VCR. After 70 days the VCR also show a change in shape. Following reserpine treatment the VCR decrease in number and show signs of degeneration. It is discussed that the VCR function as pre- or postsynaptic structures and that they are involved either in transmitting impulses from nerve fibres to pinealocytes or from one pinealocyte to the other.

Summary The seven possible primary trisomics of Petunia (2 n= 14) located in the progenies of triploid, hypertriploid and hypotriploid plants were distinguished from one another and from diploid on the basis of cytological and morphological criteria. They were provisionally named as Oval, Semi, Slender, Pseudonormal, Arrow, Narrow and Giant. In three of the trisomics, the extra chromosome was identified for the first time at pachytene stage. Postpachytene studies revealed no precise relationship between the length of extra chromosome and the frequency of multiple association.  相似文献

All models of self-motion from optical flow assume the instantaneous velocity field as input. We tested this assumption for human observers using random-dot displays that simulated translational and circular paths of movement by manipulating the lifetime and displacement of individual dots. For translational movement, observers were equally accurate in judging direction of heading from a velocity field with a two-frame dot life and a direction field in which the magnitudes of displacement were randomized while the radial pattern of directions was preserved, but at chance with a speed field in which the directions were randomized, preserving only magnitude. Accuracy declined with increasing noise in vector directions, but remained below 2.6° with a 90° noise envelope. Thus, the visual system uses the radial morphology of vector directions to determine translational heading and can tolerate large amounts of noise in this pattern. For circular movement, observers were equally accurate with a 2-frame velocity field, 3-frame acceleration displays, and 2-frame and 3-frame direction fields, consistent with the use of the pattern of vector directions to locate the center of rotation. The results indicate that successive independent velocity fields are sufficient for perception of translational and circular heading.  相似文献

Summary The melting-point tube method of Clarke and Cowan (1952) is used for testing anaerobic fermentations with yeast cells produced in aerobic growth tests. The same sugar is used for testing both growth and fermentation. With this procedure, most anaerobic fermentations were detected in <3 h, and even those hitherto described as weak or slow and involving inducible catabolic systems in <18 h.  相似文献

Summary Sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) vesicles from frog leg muscle were fused with a planar phospholipid bilayer by a method described previously for rabbit SR. As a result of the fusion, K+-selective conduction channels are inserted into the bilayer. Unlike the two-state rabbit channel, the frog channel displays three states: a nonconducting (closed) state and two conducting states and . In 0.1m K+ the single-channel conductances are 50 and 150 pS for and , respectively. The probabilities of appearearance of the three states are voltage-dependent, and transitions between the closed and states proceed through the state. Both open states follow a quantitatively identical selectivity sequence in channel conductance: K+>NH 4 + >Rb+>Na+>Li+>Cs+. Both open states are blocked by Cs+ asymmetrically in a voltage-dependent manner. The zero-voltage dissociation constant for blocking is the same for both open states, but the voltage-dependences of the Cs+ block for the two states differ in a way suggesting that the Cs+ blocking site is located more deeply inside the membrane in the than in the state.  相似文献

Summary To evaluate interrelationships among epithelial cells, and between morphology and function in the microenvironment, we studied the ultrastructural morphology of epithelial cells in sections of human thymus from donors aged 2 months to 31 years. Six types of epithelial cells were observed: subcapsular-perivascular (type 1); pale (type 2); intermediate (type 3); dark (type 4); undifferentiated (type 5); and large-medullary (type 6). Cells of types 2, 3 and 4 were found throughout the organ. The type-2 to -4 epithelial cells may represent various stages in a differentiation process. In this, type-2 cells are very active and type-4 cells are possibly degenerating elements. Type-4 cells can also contribute to Hassall's corpuscles. Type-5 cells were located mainly in the cortico-medullary region and showed the morphological characteristics of undifferentiated elements. Type-6 cells were located exclusively in the medulla and displayed characteristics of cellular activity. Small Hassall's corpuscles consisted of type-6 epithelial cells; in larger corpuscles many nuclei of type-6 cells were found. Cells of types 2 and 6 contained tubular structures (diameter approximately 20 nm).Concerning the function of thymus epithelial cells, the features associated with protein synthesis observed in cellular types 2 and 6 make them likely candidates for humoral factor-producing and/or secreting elements. In addition, type-2 and -3 cells in the cortex appear to contribute to a special pattern of epithelium-lymphocyte interaction (thymic nurse cells), as demonstrated by the intracytoplasmic location of lymphocytes in the epithelial cells. The various steps in intrathymic T-cell maturation occur at locations in a microenvironment composed of morphologically distinct epithelial cells.  相似文献

Summary In pot experiments with oats on a sandy soil deficient in managanese and with an extremely low content of reducible managanese, the effect of 0.125 g reducible managanese in two pyrolusite fertilizers (-managanese dioxides) made in 1938 and 1955, respectively, was compared with the effect of 0.125 g water-soluble managanese as managanese sulphate.On soil to which no ferrous sulphate was added, the response to manganese added as Pyrolusite 1938 and Pyrolusite 1955 was of the same magnitude, but slightly less than the response to managanese added as managanese sulphate. The difference between the effect of pyrolusite and that of managanese sulphate was not, however, statistically significant.On soil to which ferrous sulphate had been added, a response was obtained to Pyrolusite 1938 twice as high, and to Pyrolusite 1955 three times as high as the response to manganese sulphate. These results support the suggestion2 that the manganese effect of ferrous sulphate is due to its ability to reduce higher managanese oxides in the soil.Since soil dressed with ferrous sulphate gave a response to added Pyrolusite 1955 which was about 50 per cent higher than the response to Pyrolusite 1938, and since, furthermore, the same amount of reducible manganese and the same number of manganese atoms on the surface of the two fertilizers were involved, it is probable that the difference between the effects of the two pyrolusite fertilizers found under these circumstances is due to difference in their crystallinity.  相似文献

Conclusions An even broader theoretical conclusion is in order. The term modernization has been enshrined in the value-free literature on development which the Western academy has created and supported. But the experience of Brasov, a local manifestation of Romanian development, makes it clear that modernization is by no means confined to Western assumptions, and that it always occurs in specific ways depending on the social situation of the society undergoing change, and on the political nature of the program being adopted. In short, socialist modernization in Romania is not parallel to modernization under capitalist auspices in analogous areas.  相似文献

Natural abscission of young fruit and its regulation by plant hormones isconsidered and compared to the generally accepted model of senescencetriggered abscission of, for example, leaves or mature fruit. It isconcluded that abscission of young fruit cannot be explained by this model.Alternatively, it is suggested that the senescence triggered initial step inthe classical abscission model should be replaced by a correlativelytriggered step. Polar basipetal IAA transport with its autostimulation andautoinhibition components is the main regulating signal in this correlativeacting system and replaces ethylene as the initial driving force from thesenescence triggered model.Results supporting this model are presented and tested against existingresults from the literature. Finally, this hypothesis is tested as a possibleexplanation of the mode of action of some thinning chemicals orbioregulators. It is speculated how a thinning chemical should be designedto function in a more reliable way, at least as far as its interference with the endogenous hormone system is concerned.  相似文献

Summary Secretory activities of bicellular microhairs from grasses belonging to the subfamilies Chloridoideae, Arundinoideae, Panicoideae, and Bambusoideae, and including the chloridoid, panicoid and Enneapogon microhair morphological types, have been investigated. Light microscopic histochemistry indicated that all microhairs studied secrete polysaccharide and protein (or glycoprotein), including those which also secrete salt. Myelin from adult rat brains was separated on a discontinuous sucrose gradient into three subfractions. Analysis of light, heavy and membrane fraction lipid classes was performed by HPTLC and densitometry while fatty acid composition was determinated by GLC. The more interesting results observed are: i) the membrane fraction resembles in its lipid and fatty acid composition other cell membranes (particulary oligodentrocytes); ii) light and heavy myelin are quite similar between them but the former has a higher content of sphingomyelin, a lower hydroxy/nohhydroxy cerebrosides ratio and a lower content of monoenoic fatty acids than the heavy subfraction. The results obtained could explain the different structures observed in each myelin subfraction since fatty acid composition, hydroxy fatty acids, sphingomyelin and cholesterol play a key role in the stability and structure of membranes.  相似文献

In the acquision of counting by children, there are three interesting phenomena (Fuson et al. 1982): (1) the number word sequence produced by children can be divided into three distinct portions, called the conventional, stable nonconventional, and unstable portions; (2) irregular number words such as fifteen are omitted more often than regular ones such as fourteen, sixteen, and seventeen; and (3) initially the number word sequence is in a recitation form, rather than in the form of an associative chain of separable serial elements. Our paper at first analyzes these phenomena from the viewpoint of associative memory by assuming the number word sequences are made up of many associative relationships between the number words. This assumption is not contradictory to the third phenomenon described above, because the associative relationships are not confined only to those between the serial number words. On the basis of these anaylses, an associative network model, HAPS proposed by one of the authors (Hirai 1983), is extended so that it can mimic some aspects of the learning of sequence which involves the above three phenomena. The learning and production of sequence by the network are simulated on a digital computer, and the results show that the three phenomena can be observed in the performance of the network.  相似文献

Summary Human liver alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) variants were screened in random autopsy specimens from 53 North German and 34 Japanese individuals. Based on pH-activity profile and electrophoretic pattern, only ADH2 and ADH3 variants were detected. In relatively fresh specimens, an anodic band or -ADH band was also observed. The recently reported new molecular forms collectively called ADHIndianapolis (Bosron et al. 1980) could not be demonstrated and therefore may be confined hitherto only to the American black population.This paper is dedicated to Professor Dr. Dr. H. Summary Female cabbage white butterflies, under constant laboratory conditions exhibit wavelength specific behavior in choosing sites for egg-laying and drumming.In preliminary spontaneous choice experiments with colored PVC-sheets (Table 1, results) butterflies gave somewhat different preference order than with monochromatic lights of different wavelength but equal relative quantum flux (Table 2A, B). These differences probably depended on the relative number of quanta and the spectral composition of the light reflected by the sheets.White light is ignored by the butterflies during both drumming and egg-laying, up to intensities 60 times that of the monochromatic light stimulus.The functional categories egg-laying and drumming are both associated with the spectral region from 497 nm to ca. 585 nm (Fig. 10). The functional category feeding reaction is associated with regions adjoining that for egg-laying and drumming on both the shorter-wavelength side (<497nm) and the longer-wavelength side (>578nm).Wavelength specific behavior and the significance of odor substances in the chain of stimuli that lead up to egg-laying are discussed.Respectfully dedicated to Prof. H. Various philosophers and evolutionary biologists have recently defended the thesis that species are individuals rather than sets. A decade of debates, however, did not suffice to settle the matter. Conceptual analysis shows that many of the key terms involved (individuation, evolutionary species, spatiotemporal restrictedness, individual) are ambiguous. Current disagreements should dissolve once this is recognized. Explication of the concepts involved leads to new programs for philosophical research. It could also help biology by showing how extant controversies concerning evolution may have conceptual rather than factual roots.  相似文献

Summary Structural gene loci encoding the monomeric isozymes nicotin adenin dinucleotide dehydrogenase (NADH dehydrogenase or NDH) have been located on the 4AL, 4B, and 4DS chromosome arms of Triticum aestivum cv Chinese Spring, on the 4RS chromosome arm of Secale cereale cultivars Imperial, King II, Dakold, and Ailes, on the 4S1 S/7S1 chromosome of Aegilops longissima, the 4E of Elytrigia elongata, and the CSU-A of Aegilops umbellulata. All the results support the homoeologous relationships among these chromosomes in the five species studied. In addition, a map of the 4RS chromosome arm in cv Ailes has been realized, linking loci Pgm-1 (located on the 4RS chromosome arm) and Ndh-1 (17.91 cM), with an estimated distance between both loci and the centromere of 20.00 cM and 32.12 cM, respectively.  相似文献
