Parasites influence host life-history traits and therefore might crucially shape host populations in natural systems. In a series of laboratory experiments, we studied the impact of an oomycete brood parasite on its Daphnia (waterflea) host. We asked whether Daphnia dump the infected brood and subsequently are able to reproduce again as was occasionally observed in a preliminary study. No viable offspring developed from infected clutches, but 78% of the infected females produced healthy offspring after releasing the infected brood while molting. Neither those offsprings’ development success nor their mothers’ reproductive potential was affected by the brood parasite. However, infected Daphnia had a reduced life-span and suffered an increased susceptibility to another parasite, an unidentified bacterium. Additionally, we studied the prevalence of this brood parasite and the unidentified bacterium in a natural Daphnia assemblage in a pre-alpine lake, across changing demographic and environmental conditions. The brood parasite epidemic seemed to be host-density dependent. Our results show that the brood parasite’s impact on the host population is enhanced when combined with the unidentified bacterium.  相似文献

The factors influencing the seasonal dynamics of Daphnia in a thermally stratified lake (Esthwaite Water) are described and related to long-term changes in the weather. The Daphnia produced three cohorts in the year and the strength of the cohorts was determined by year-to-year variations in the physical characteristics of the lake and the abundance of edible algae. Food was most abundant in early summer when small, fast-growing flagellates were particularly common. In late summer, the phytoplankton community was dominated by large, inedible species but edible forms re-appeared when nutrients were entrained by wind mixing. Examples are presented to demonstrate the effect that year-to-year variations in the weather have on the growth of the phytoplankton and the dynamics of the Daphnia. In ‘good’ years, when the lake stratifies early and there are periods of episodic mixing in summer, there are two ‘pulses’ of edible algae and two strong cohorts of Daphnia. In ‘bad’ years when stratification is delayed and there is little episodic mixing, the growth of the edible algae is suppressed and the Daphnia produce two weak cohorts. The results are discussed in relation to the impact of intermediate disturbances on growth of phytoplankton and current theories of population regulation in Daphnia. The evidence suggests that the dynamics of the Daphnia in the lake are strongly influenced by seasonal variations in the mixing regime, the recycling of nutrients and the episodic growth of edible algae.  相似文献

Zooplankton grazing was measured in Albufera of València (Spain), a shallow turbid hypertrophic lagoon dominated by filamentous bluegreens, during the period of Daphnia magna growth, to evaluate the role of this cladoceran in maintaining a clear water phase which takes place after flushing for rice cultivation practices. We found extremely low ingestion and clearance rates (CR) on latex beads in situ, using a Haney trap suggesting potentially strong inhibition of grazing by the filamentous cyanobacteria, still flourishing in the lagoon. To test the effect of filaments, we undertook laboratory feeding experiments using six different dilutions of the lagoon water to vary filament concentrations, and four different bead concentrations. A highly significant power function between CR and water dilution associated with filament concentrations was found, indicating that the ability of Daphnia to exploit smaller edible algae and thereby control phytoplankton growth would depend on filament concentration levels in the lagoon. From our results only the two more diluted treatments, 9 × 103 and 18 × 103 filament ml−1 showed CRs not far from the range of what would be normally expected on the basis of the general relationship of feeding rate as a function of total food concentration. This means that at lower food concentrations, filaments reduce D. magna CR by increasing total food concentration beyond the incipient limiting level, as well as by moderate mechanical interference with the animal’s feeding. However, at lagoon water concentrations above 25% (corresponding to filament concentrations of 75 × 105 filaments ml−1), extremely low CR’s, which did not respond to any food addition, were obtained for D. magna. From these results we can infer that at concentrations beyond the above-mentioned critical level, feeding inhibition by filamentous cyanobacteria is most probably due entirely to mechanical interference. For three consecutive years, a population study of Daphnia pulicaria was undertaken in Río Seco Lake, a small high-mountain lake, in order to elucidate the reproductive strategies adopted by Daphnia in this system. Daphnia appears to colonize this lake every spring by hatching from ephippia and reproduce by means of subitaneous (non-diapausing) and ephippial (diapausing) eggs. D. pulicaria in this lake is an obligate parthenogenetic population. There is a short time period for subitaneous egg production and a much longer period for ephippial egg production. The contribution of subitaneous eggs to Daphnia population density and structure appears to be low. Diapause onset showed a high temporal synchronization in the three studied years in Río Seco Lake, and day-length emerged as the main cue triggering diapause onset and the main explanatory factor for the proportion of ephippial females observed. The development and reproduction of D. pulicaria in Río Seco Lake involves taking a gamble on resting forms to guarantee inter-annual Daphnia persistence in the lake, giving priority to investment in future generations. We examined the temporal and vertical dynamics of zooplankton in Weavers Lake, New Zealand, between October 2004 and October 2005, at a time when it was colonised by a non-indigenous Daphnia species. Zooplankton community composition changed during the study from one of rotifer dominance (e.g. Asplanchna, Polyarthra, Brachionus and Keratella species) to cladoceran (Daphnia dentifera) dominance. Temporal changes in zooplankton community composition were strongly associated with a gradual increase in lake water clarity, and were attributable to the highly efficient filter feeding of D. dentifera. The corresponding reduction in rotifer densities may have resulted from the superior competitive abilities of the newly established Daphnia. As Daphnia were rare inhabitants of New Zealand lakes before 1990, the arrival and rapid spread of the non-indigenous D. dentifera has lead to widespread changes in both water clarity and zooplankton community composition. An apparent lack of mixing in the lake was facilitated by the lake’s extremely small surface area:depth ratio. However, we conclude that physical features of the lake had minimal influence on water clarity relative to the invasion of D. dentifera.  相似文献

Feeding selectivity and efficiency of young-of-the-year European perch and roach were compared under field and laboratory conditions. In laboratory experiments, the importance of prey evasiveness versus prey movement conspicuousness for fish selectivity was evaluated with respect to changing Cladocera/Copepoda prey ratio. Feeding efficiency was additionally investigated in relation to feeding time (5, 10, 20 min) and prey density (approx. 50, 200, 700 ind. L−1). In Říov Reservoir, the diet of both fish species was nearly exclusively composed of crustacean zooplankton. In roach, diet shifted from rotifers and bosminids in May, towards Daphnia sp. and Leptodora kindtii in June and July. Daphnia contributed almost exclusively to the roach diet since June, composing on average more than 94% of total prey. Cyclopoid copepods, occurred in the roach’s diet only on the first sampling date; later on both cyclopoid and calanoid copepods were completely absent. On the other hand, copepods played an important role in the diet of perch. In early and mid-June when their share in the zooplankton was particularly high, copepods contributed by more than 50% to the diet of perch. Although their contribution dropped with their decline in zooplankton in June/July, by the end of July they again comprised about one third of perch’s diet. In both fish species, the increase in numbers of cladocerans in their diet was related to increase in SL. In roach, the numbers of consumed prey were doubled every twenty days during the investigated period. In perch the increase was not so consistent, but significantly higher efficiency of perch was reported on three out of six sampling dates. In laboratory experiments, roach showed a distinct avoidance for copepods and a preference for cladocerans. Both prey categories were only fed non-selectively when they dominated the prey mixture. Perch selectivity was more diversified. Contrary to roach, perch were fed copepods non-selectively on a balanced prey ratio. Further, with an increasing share of Cladocera, a situation resembling that of roach and Copepoda was avoided. However, when the share of copepods in the prey mixture dropped below ten percent, they were consumed non-selectively and with their ongoing decline in the prey mixture their preference even increased. Feeding efficiency differed significantly between perch and roach when foraging on copepods exclusively or on a prey mixture where copepods predominated. In the short time feeding experiment (5 min) with copepods, perch consumed on average 5.9 times more prey than roach. Although roach increased their success with increasing time it was still 1.7 times greater than for perch in the long time feeding experiment (20 min). Total numbers of prey consumed were positively affected by prey density and feeding time. With increasing feeding time, the consumption rate generally declined. With a fourfold increase in feeding time, the numbers of consumed prey increased on average only two times. Only in roach feeding on copepods did the numbers of prey consumed per minute of feeding increase with increasing feeding time. However, the overall numbers were low. Differences in feeding selectivity and efficiency between perch and roach juveniles were found to be significant both in the field and laboratory experiments. In roach, selectivity was determined solely by prey evasiveness. By contrast, perch’s selectivity was influenced by prey movement conspicuousness; prey escape abilities did not play an important role. Perch were more efficient foragers on evasive prey, but its feeding efficiency for non-evasive prey was not lower than that of roach. According to our observations, we suggest feeding behaviour to be responsible for the roach’s inefficiency in capturing evasive copepods.  相似文献

Daphnia can reproduce through subitaneous and dormant eggs. The production of dormant eggs is induced by stimuli associated with deteriorating growth conditions, and enable Daphnia populations to survive temporarily harsh environmental conditions. Dormant eggs are expected to have developed special biochemical adaptations to bridge this long unfavourable period, but little comparative biochemical data are available for dormant and subitaneous eggs. We compared levels of the following molecules between subitaneous and dormant eggs: (a) triglycerides, which are the most abundant energy storage molecules in Daphnia, (b) glycerol, a cryoprotectant also involved in energy storage, and (c) the heat shock protein Hsp60, a molecular chaperone that may assist in maintaining protein structural integrity and inhibiting cell metabolism during diapause. Unexpectedly, no difference in triglycerides content between egg types was found. As expected, dormant eggs contained more glycerol and relatively more Hsp60 than subitaneous eggs. The biochemical composition of dormant eggs can therefore be seen as an adaptation to the harsh environmental conditions these eggs encounter. The impact of Daphnia longispina (Cladocera) on the plankton food web was studied in a polyhumic lake where this species comprised almost all zooplankton biomass. Plastic enclosures (volume 7 m3) were inserted into the lake retaining the initial water stratification except that in one enclosure zooplankton was removed. After the removal of Daphniaa rotifer, Keratella cochlearis, ciliates and heterotrophic nanoflagellates increased markedly and the density and biomass of bacteria decreased. Edible algal species, Cryptomonas rostratiformisand three small chrysophytes,Ochromonas, Pedinella and Spinifermonas, took advantage of the removal of Daphnia, while more grazing-resistant species declined. In spite of the changes in the species composition of phytoplankton, the removal of Daphnia did not affect the biomass, primary production or respiration of plankton. The results implied that the density of heterotrophic flagellates and ciliates was controlled by Daphnia, but in its absence the former took its role as the bacterial grazers.  相似文献

Summary Numerous adaptive predator-induced responses occurred when eight clones representing seven Daphnia (Crustacea: Cladocera) species were tested against three common predators: fourth instar larval phantom midge Chaoborus americanus, adult backswimmer Notonecta undulata, and small sunfish Lepomis macrochirus. The predators were confined within small mesh bags, suggesting that the signal for induction is chemical. The induced responses included longer tail spines, longer heads, smaller bodies, increased egg clutches, and decreased lipid reserves. Each Daphnia species responded to each of the three predators in a unique manner. Induced responses in the above characters showed no significant association. The induced morphological changes are generally consistent with current theories of what is an adaptive response for the various sizes of Daphnia exposed to tactile and visual predators. The abundance of induced responses in these experiments suggests that predator-induced responses are a widespread and ecologically important phenomenon of the freshwater zooplankton.  相似文献

Leptodora kindti (Crustacea: Cladocera) is a large species of zooplankton (2–18 mm length) that is exceptionally transparent. This transparency is believed to be a means by which it successfully coexists in lakes with planktivorous fishes. We investigated the gut remains of bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) that had been feeding on L. kindti and Daphnia (D. galeata and D. retrocurva) in the wild (Lake Zurich, Illinois) and found that bluegill readily preyed on L. kindti as small as 3–5 mm length, and strongly selected L. kindti over Daphnia galeata and Daphnia retrocurva. The large compound eye of L. kindti is one half to one complete order of magnitude larger than Daphnia's eye, consistent with the hypothesis that eye area is an important visual cue for fishes. Moreover, the slope of the relationship between eye area and body length is an order of magnitude shallower in L. kindti than Daphnia, suggesting that eye area has been under stronger negative selection in L. kindti. Results suggest that L. kindti's large and dark eye compromises the transparent nature of its body.  相似文献

Zooplankton communities with a high or low density of Chaoborus larvae were established in outdoor concrete ponds, to which a carbamate insecticide, carbaryl, was applied at 0.1 or 0.5 mg l−1. The lower concentration of the chemical was harmful only to Cladocera. The higher concentration damaged Chaoborus, Copepoda, and some rotifer species, as well as Cladocera. In the ponds with a low density of Chaoborus, chemical application altered the cladoceran community from dominance by Daphnia to that by Bosmina and Moina. In the ponds with a high density of Chaoborus, Chaoborus excluded cladocerans from the zooplankton community presumably by predation, and supported the dominance of rotifers. Cladocera did not recover after application of the chemical, even when Chaoborus was eliminated by the higher concentration of chemical. The relatively rapid recovery of Chaoborus seemed to interrupt the recovery of Cladocera.  相似文献

Previous studies confirmed the presence of melatonin in Daphnia magna and demonstrated diurnal fluctuations in its concentration. It is also known that in several invertebrate species, melatonin affects locomotor activity. We tested the hypothesis that this hormone is involved in the regulation of Daphnia diel vertical migration (DVM) behaviour that is well recognized as the adaptive response to predation threat. Using ‘plankton organs’, we studied the effect of three concentrations of exogenous melatonin (10−5, 10−7, 10−9 M) on DVM of both female and male D. magna in the presence or absence of chemical cue (kairomone) of planktivorous fish. Depth distribution was measured six times a day, using infrared-sensitive closed circuit television cameras. Our results showed a significant effect of melatonin on the mean depth of experimental populations, both males and females, but only when melatonin was combined with fish kairomone. Females stayed, on average, closer to the surface than males, both responding to the presence of kairomone by descending to deeper strata. In the presence of exogenous melatonin and with the threat of predation, Daphnia stayed closer to the surface and their distribution was more variable than that of individuals, which were exposed to the kairomone alone. Approaching the surface in the presence of predation threat seems to be maladaptive. We postulate the role of melatonin as a stress signal inhibitor in molecular pathways of response to predation threat in Cladocera.  相似文献

This study examined the formation of morphological defences by two coexisting Daphnia species, the large-sized D. pulicaria (2 mm) and the small-sized D. mendotae (1.4 mm), in response to the presence of young-of-the-year (YOY) yellow perch (Perca flavescens) and invertebrate predators (Chaoborus, Leptodora) during summer in a mesotrophic lake. We hypothesized that due to differential size-selective predation risk by YOY fish and invertebrates, the large-sized and the small-sized Daphnia species would show different morphological responses to predation threats. We followed changes in two morphological traits (relative length of the tail spine in D. pulicaria and of the helmet in D. mendotae) among different periods during summer according to YOY fish and invertebrate predation. We defined four YOY fish predation periods based on the presence of YOY perch in the pelagic zone of the lake and the relative abundance of Daphnia preys in their gut contents, and two invertebrate predation periods based on exclusive or mutual occurrence of the invertebrate predators. The large-sized (D. pulicaria) and the small-sized (D. mendotae) species showed different morphological responses to YOY fish and invertebrate predators, respectively. The tail spine ratio of the juveniles and adults of D. pulicaria did not change in response to YOY fish predation or to invertebrate predation. A gradual increase in the helmet ratio was observed in the small-sized D. mendotae over the summer period. This change was related to the co-occurrence of the invertebrate predators (Chaoborus and Leptodora) and to YOY fish predation. The warmer temperature cannot be accounted for helmet elongation since it was constant across depths, and not related with the co-occurrence of D. mendotae and YOY perch. There have been almost a hundred years of continuous scientific activities at The Hydrobiological Station ‘Glubokoe Ozero’. The present volume of ‘Hydrobiologia’ contains summary papers reviewing previous and recent results of the studies on the hydrochemistry, zooplankton, zoobenthos, littoral fauna, food composition of fish, and historical biocenology (based on animal remains in bottom sediments), as well as on particular animal groups, such as Cladocera with special consideration of Daphnia, rotifers, fish, and parasitofauna. The present introductory paper provides data on the general characteristics of Lake Glubokoe, the history of its investigations and the station's modern programme which is aimed at biocenology with special consideration for morphological and physiological adaptations. Research both on general and on peculiar features of Lake Glubokoe is envisaged.  相似文献

Contrary to an expectation from the size-efficiency hypothesis, small herbivore zooplankton such as Ceriodaphnia often competitively predominate against large species such as Daphnia. However, little is known about critical feeding conditions favoring Ceriodaphnia over Daphnia. To elucidate these conditions, a series of growth experiments was performed with various types of foods in terms of phosphorus (P) contents and composition (algae and bacteria). An experiment with P-rich algae showed that the threshold food level, at which an individual’s growth rate equals zero, was not significantly different between the two species. However, the food P:C ratio, at which the growth rate becomes zero, was lower for Daphnia than for Ceriodaphnia, suggesting that the latter species is rather disfavored by P-poor algae. Ceriodaphnia showed a higher growth rate than Daphnia only when a substantial amount of bacteria was supplied together with a low amount of P-poor algae as food. These results suggest that an abundance of bacteria relative to algae plays a crucial role in favoring Ceriodaphnia over Daphnia because these are an important food resource for the former species but not for the latter.  相似文献

Abstract Freshwater ecosystems derive organic carbon from both allochthonous and autochthonous sources. We studied the relative contributions of different carbon sources to zooplankton in a small, polyhumic, steeply stratified lake, using six replicate surface-to-sediment enclosures established during summer and autumn 2004. We added 13C-enriched bicarbonate to the epilimnion of half the enclosures for three weeks during each season and monitored carbon stable isotope ratios of DIC, DOC, POC and Daphnia, along with physical, chemical and biological variables. During summer, 13C-enriched DIC (δ13C up to 44 ± 7.2‰) was soon taken up by phytoplankton (δ13C up to −5.1 ± 13.6‰) and was transmitted to Daphnia13C up to −1.7 ± 7.2‰), demonstrating consumption of phytoplankton. In contrast, during autumn, 13C-enriched DIC (δ13C up to 56.3 ± 9.8‰) was not transmitted to Daphnia, whose δ13C became progressively lower (δ13C down to −45.6 ± 3.3‰) concomitant with decreasing methane concentration. Outputs from a model suggested phytoplankton contributed 64–84% of Daphnia diet during summer, whereas a calculated pelagic carbon mass balance indicated only 30–40% could have come from phytoplankton. Although autumn primary production was negligible, zooplankton biomass persisted at the summer level. The model suggested methanotrophic bacteria contributed 64–87% of Daphnia diet during autumn, although the calculated carbon mass balance indicated a contribution of 37–112%. Thus methanotrophic bacteria could supply virtually all the carbon requirement of Daphnia during autumn in this lake. The strongly 13C-depleted Daphnia values, together with the outputs from the models and the calculated carbon mass balance showed that methanotrophic bacteria can be a greater carbon source for Daphnia in lakes than previously suspected.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that exposure to antibiotics alters the growth and reproductive responses of Daphnia magna to changing stoichiometric food quality. To do so, we measured growth and reproduction of differentially P-nourished Daphnia in the presence and absence of sublethal concentrations of antibiotics. We found that exposure to an antibiotic cocktail significantly reduced an index of the microbial load of Daphnia and altered its growth responses to changing dietary P-content. Growth rates of Daphnia consuming the most P-rich and P-poor food increased with antibiotic exposure but were negatively or not affected in animals eating mildly to moderately P-limiting food. Similar effects were found in a subsequent experiment where daphnid neonates were exposed to natural bacterial communities prior to receiving antibiotics and being fed different food C:P ratios. In contrast, antibiotic effects on Daphnia reproduction were either not detected (number and size of broods) or were relatively minor (day of first reproduction). We also found no evidence that gut flora provides defense against pathogenic bacterial infection; instead, infection rates in Daphnia by a bacterial microparasite, Pasteuria ramosa, decreased in animals that had experienced prior antibiotic exposure. Our results demonstrate that antibiotic exposure reduced the microbial load and altered growth rates of an important zooplankton herbivore. Given the mediating role of animal’s food C:P ratio, our results show that interactions between Daphnia and its microbial symbionts vary in strength and nature partly with the host’s nutritional state.  相似文献

Specific growth rates (based on biomass increment in unit time) of Daphnia fed natural reservoir seston from a eutrophic Siberian reservoir were studied during four vegetation seasons in a laboratory flow-through system. Concentrations of particulate C, N, and P in reservoir seston <115 μm were comparatively high, 1.9, 0.2, and 0.05 mg l−1, respectively; maximum C:P ratio was 259 mol:mol. According to conventional thresholds, concentrations of elements and their stoichiometry did not limit the growth rate of Daphnia. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) in seston significantly effected the growth rates at concentrations up to ∼13 μg l−1 (regression ANOVAR F-test value was 7.91), but not above this concentration. Thus, we consider this concentration of EPA in seston <115 μm to be the limiting concentration of EPA for the growth of Daphnia (longispina group), i.e., below this concentration EPA was the best single predictor of the growth of Daphnia.  相似文献

Two comparable methods were used to study the feeding of four species of Daphnia on large spherical particles which differed in size and hardness. The first method used gut analysis to estimate the selectivities of daphnids feeding in a broad size range of a single particle type, including polystyrene beads (4–60 µm diameter) in the laboratory and Eudorina colonies (10–90 µm) in the field. In the second method, Daphnia of different sizes fed in a mixture of 6.5 µm Chlamydomonas and one of eight test particles. Smaller daphnids were less effective in feeding on large test particles. Nonlinear regression was therefore used to estimate the Daphnia body size at which the clearance rate on a test particle was reduced to 50% of that for Chlamydomonas. The results of both methods show that prey size and hardness are both very important in determining daphnid feeding selectivity. For a given particle size, soft algae (naked and gelatinous flagellates) are more readily ingested than hard algae (diatoms and dinoflagellates), and hard algae are more readily ingested than polystyrene beads. Daphnia can feed effectively on algae that are 2–5 times larger than the largest ingestible bead.  相似文献

Single parasite species often have a range of different hosts which vary in their ability to sustain the parasite. When foraging for food, alternative hosts with similar feeding modes may compete for the infective stages of trophically transmitted parasites. If some of the infective stages end up in unsuitable hosts, transmission of the parasite to the focal host is decreased. I studied whether the presence of conspecifics alters the probability of an uninfected susceptible recipient Daphnia becoming infected by a microparasite and if this effect depends on whether the added conspecifics themselves are susceptible or resistant to infection. The presence of both susceptible and resistant conspecifics decreased the probability of infection in recipients. This effect was dependent on the density of the conspecifics but was not found to be related to their size. In addition, when Daphnia were placed in medium derived from crowded Daphnia populations, the probability of infection in recipients decreased as compared to that in standard medium. This implies that decreases in transmission probability are not caused by dilution of spores through food competition only, but also by indirect interference mediated through infochemicals released by Daphnia. Since Daphnia have been found to respond to crowding by decreasing their filtering rate, the decrease in transmission is probably caused by decreased intake of spores in crowded conditions. The presence of conspecifics can thus decrease microparasite transmission in Daphnia which may have important consequences for epidemiology and evolution of Daphnia parasites.  相似文献
