Survival of 0+ year pike Esox lucius (20–31 mm L T) was evaluated over the first week following stocking in ponds (16 m2) depending on water transparencies (low and high), habitat complexity (low and high) and food availability (zooplankton). A multiple regression analysis showed that survival, essentially as a result of cannibalism, decreased with increasing size heterogeneity of pike, and the decrease was steeper when no food was available. Survival was equal in clear water and water containing copper chlorophyllin (chlorophyll), and slightly higher in complex than in simple habitats, but only when alternative prey availability was low. Conversely, growth in water containing chlorophyll was slightly faster than in clear water. This suggests that initial size heterogeneity is the prevailing factor controlling mortality when stocking 0+ year pike almost irrespective of the stocking environment.  相似文献

The effect of time of stocking on the extent and source of mortality in 0+ year pike Esox lucius was investigated in a lake (20 ha) and a drainable pond (0·5 ha) using pike with alizarin marked otoliths. The results indicated that pike stocked late relative to the recruitment of native 0+ year pike fell victim to cannibalism from these larger individuals. This resulted in very low survival through the first growing season (<2%). Pike stocked early in the season exhibited significantly higher survival (>12%). Analyses of the size distribution of the alizarin marks from these fish revealed that the largest 0+ year pike exhibited by a factor of 3·3, higher survival than the average 0+ year pike in the lake. In order for large 0+ year pike to exhibit such high relative fitness a minimum of 69·7% of the original population must suffer size dependent mortality. In the pond the survival of the largest pike was by a factor of 4·2 higher than the average pike, and the corresponding size dependent mortality was 76·4%. The substantial size‐dependent mortality was most probably due to intra‐cohort cannibalism or habitat segregation between large and small 0+ year pike that exposes the small pike to predatory fishes in the open lake. Cannibalism exerts a major influence on the survival of 0+ year pike post‐stocking although the magnitude and origin differ in relation to stocking time.  相似文献

Survival, biomass and diet of pike, Esox lucius , larvae and juveniles were studied over 3 years by stocking free embryos at a density of six fish m−2 in 12 drainable outdoor ponds. The ponds were sequentially drained at six larval/juvenile developmental stages, up to a total length (T.L.) of 139 mm. The mean rate of survival at harvest decreased irregularly over time and the highest mortality rates were recorded during the early larval period (13 to 27 mm t.l .) and two intervals of the juvenile period (46 to 99 mm T.L. and 121 to 139 mm t.l .). Mean biomass increased dramatically between 46 mm T.L. (19.8 kg ha−1) and 121 mm T.L. (181.8 kg ha−1) and stabilized between 121 and 139 mm t.l . Sharp increases in the mean weight coefficient of variation were recorded during the early larval period (13 to 27 mm t.l .) and between 74 and 121 mm t.l . (development of cannibalism). Diet breadths were relatively narrow in pike larvae and reached maximum levels in 99 mm t.l . juveniles. Average-sized pike exhibited a sequence of size-dependent shifts from a diet composed primarily (in terms of weight) of micro-crustaceans (at 13 mm t.l .), to chironomid larvae (at 74 to 99 mm t.l .), and finally macrocrustaceans (at 121 to 139 mm t.l .). Cannibalism was detected first among the largest fish at the 74 mm t.l . stage. Between-year diet similarity at various developmental stages was consistently high. In 70 mm t.l . fish harvested from different ponds, we found significant among-pond differences in diet composition; however, similar trends of diet changes in relation to fish size were observed from pond to pond. Our results are discussed in light of existing knowledge of young pike trophic ecology and current aquaculture practices.  相似文献

Habitat use, migration, mortality and growth of the chevron snakehead Channa striata in a rainfed rice farming landscape of north‐east Thailand were studied through a tagging experiment. A total of 751 fish were captured, tagged and released during three distinct events in the late dry season, and in the beginning and at the end of the wet season. Rice fields provided the major wet season habitat for C. striata . Small trap ponds built to provide dry season habitat on farms provided 20% of catches and, if not harvested, could increase recruitment to the spawning stock by >30% despite accounting for <1% of dry season habitat by area. Migrations were localized (mostly <500 m). Up‐migration from perennial to seasonal water bodies at the beginning of the wet season involved longer distances and took place over a longer time than down‐migration at the end of the wet season. Natural mortality rates were extremely high, particularly during the period of down‐migration. Fishing mortality rates were high in absolute terms, but contributed only 6–36% to the total mortality. Growth was seasonal with a maximum towards the end of the wet season. Snakeheads have successfully colonized the rainfed rice farming landscape, where populations can withstand intensive exploitation and respond well to aquatic habitat management on farmland.  相似文献

Yolk-sac pike fry were stocked at densities of 0.74 – 81.4 m−2 in two ponds, each divided into eight sectors (mean area 155.8 m2). Growth and survival were recorded from May to December 1985. The growth rates were variable within each sector. The size-range of sampled fish increased throughout the year, but showed no significant correlation with density. Fry survival was initially density-independent but switched by late June/July to density-dependence, ranging from 0.5 to 43.6% of initial stocking numbers. The highest mean daily mortality rates occurred during May-July. The final survival in December ranged between sectors from 0.059 to 11.25% of the starting stock densities. The final biomass per unit area of pike surviving in December was not related to initial stocking density. In Pond 1 the mean biomass produced was 2.21 gm−2 and in Pond 2 was 3.49gm−2.
Pike fry < 30 mm fed only on invertebrates; those 30–100 mm took a wide range of invertebrates, cyprinids. sticklebacks and other pike. Cannibalism occurred at most densities between 5.45 and 81.4 fish m−2.
Where attempts are made to increase pike production in managed populations by releasing small fry, an upper stock density of 5 fry m−2 is advised if large, density-dependent mortalities are to be avoided.  相似文献

Three focal size classes [small (<40 mm, standard length, L S), medium (40–80 mm L S) and large (>80 mm L S)] of pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus were exposed to conspecific or one of three heterospecific chemical alarm cues under one of three levels of habitat complexity (low, intermediate and high). Under low and intermediate habitat complexities, pumpkinseeds <80 mm L S exhibited a significant antipredator response when exposed to the chemical alarm cues of heterospecific prey guild members (largemouth bass Micropterus salmonides and hypoxanthine‐3‐ N ‐oxide, the putative Ostariophysan alarm 'pheromone'), while pumpkinseeds >80 mm L S exhibited a foraging response. Under highly complex habitats, pumpkinseeds of all three size classes exhibited an antipredator response. Moreover, under all three habitat conditions, pumpkinseeds of all size classes exhibited an antipredator response to conspecific alarm cues. There was no change in behaviour under any treatment combination in response to an allopatric heterospecific control (swordtails Xiphophorus helleri ). These results provide the first field verification of the size dependent use of chemical alarm cues by centrarchids and demonstrate that microhabitat complexity significantly influences the threat‐sensitive use of these cues.  相似文献

The population structure, age, growth, mortality and harvest intensity of the oyster Crassostrea madrasensis were examined in the Moheskhali Channel, Bangladesh between June 2003 and May 2004. The channel is a representative habitat for the area. C. madrasensis monthly length frequency data were analyzed using FiSAT software for estimating population parameters, including asymptotic length ( L ), growth co-efficient ( K ) and recruitment pattern to assess the status of the stock. Asymptotic length ( L∝ ) and growth co-efficient ( K ) were 20.88 cm and 0.35 year−1, respectively. The growth performance index (φ') was calculated with 2.18. The growth pattern showed negative allometric growth ( b  < 3), with an asymptotic weight ( W ) of about 1124.6 g. The oyster attained an average length of 6.17 cm at the end of 1 year. Total mortality ( Z ) by length-converted catch curve was estimated at 1.78 year−1, fishing mortality ( F ) at 0.77 year−1, and natural mortality ( M ) at 1.01 year−1. The exploitation level ( E ) of C. madrasensis was 0.43, while the maximum allowable limit of exploitation ( E max) was 0.45 for the highest yield. The recruitment pattern was continuous, displaying a single major peak event per year. Habitat temperatures were 25.5–31.0°C (mean ± SD, 29 ± 1.62°C); salinity range was from 12.36 to 26.0 ppt (mean ± SD, 19.6 ± 4.7 ppt). The exploitation level (0.43) indicated that the oyster stock was exploited at almost maximum yield in this channel.  相似文献

Pike fry were kept in 0.054-m3 tanks at densities of 50, 100 and 150 (277, 555, 833 fry m−2) for seven weeks during which the development of social and feeding behaviour was observed. Zooplankton, macro-invertebrates and perch fry were provided sequentially as food; the pike fry were allowed to feed ad libitum.
Zooplanktivorous fry stopped growing at 22 mm whilst, in the presence of abundant suitable alternative prey, 1–4% turned cannibalistic at 5 weeks of age; cannibals subsequently grew rapidly (mean 1.88 mm day−1). Cannibalism ensued in all tanks when the ratio of predator size: prey size was c .2:1.
Fry tended to space-out evenly in the tanks with no overt aggression or territoriality. Behaviour was typified by remaining still for long periods, particularly subsequent to the onset of cannibalism. Cannibals were attracted by fry movements which often initiated attacks.
Daily per capita mortality rates showed no crowding effects before cannibalism but significant density-dependent mortality due to cannibals. Consumption rates of cannibals varied between 0.63 and 6.0 fry per cannibal per day. Cannibals accounted for 54–96% of daily mortality in the experimental tanks. These results are discussed in relation to proposed mechanisms of pike population density regulation.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Like many invertebrate predators, the wolf spider Pardosa littoralis Banks (Araneae: Lycosidae) accumulates in complex-structured habitats replete with leaf litter (thatch). Here we test the hypothesis that P. littoralis accumulates in complex habitats to gain refuge from cannibalism.
2. A laboratory experiment examined the effects of habitat complexity (thatch present or absent) and size-class pairing of conspecific spiders (large vs. small, small vs. small, and large vs. large) on the incidence of cannibalism. Spider survival was significantly higher (22%) in complex-structured habitats with thatch than in simple-structured habitats lacking thatch. Furthermore, cannibalism occurred more frequently in P. littoralis when the size of conspecifics was asymmetric (large vs. small spiders) than when spiders were of equal size. There was no interactive effect of habitat complexity and size-class pairing on spider survival.
3. A field experiment examined the effects of habitat complexity, conspecific density, and access to alternative prey on the prevalence of cannibalism in P. littoralis . Access to alternative prey significantly increased the number of spiders recovered from field enclosures, as did the presence of leaf litter thatch. That fewer spiders were recovered when thatch and alternative prey were absent suggests that cannibalism was most prevalent under these conditions.
4. Overall, results suggest that habitat complexity reduces agonistic interactions and cannibalism among wolf spiders, providing encouragement to pest managers that the structure of agricultural habitats can be managed to maximise densities of generalist predators for enhanced pest suppression.  相似文献

The stocking of newly hatched pike Esox lucius labelled with radioactive strontium (85Sr) and later electrofishing of the same area was found to be a workable tool in assessing the success of pike stockings. 85Sr‐labelled individuals constituted 96% of the 0+year pike catch from late summer electrofishing in the stocked littoral areas of the heavily regulated Lokka Reservoir. The density of 0+year pike reached 2·1 individuals 100 m−2 in the stocked areas in comparison to 0·3 individuals 100 m−2 in the reference areas. In the three other stocked lakes the proportion of labelled pike in the catch ranged from 0 to 42% in late summer. The results suggest that pike stockings are profitable in filling empty or nearly empty 0+year pike habitats of regulated lakes or other waterbodies, where the natural reproduction of pike has declined due to human activities.  相似文献

Habitat area, fragmentation, and the surrounding matrix influence levels of herbivory in various ecosystems, but the relative importance of these effects has rarely been assessed. We compared levels of herbivory and densities of dominant arthropod herbivores (the hemipteran insects Agallia constricta, Empoasca fabae, Therioaphis trifolii, Lygus lineolaris and Halticus bractatus ) among experimental plots that varied in the area and fragmentation of clover habitat and the composition of the matrix (bare ground or grass) surrounding clover habitat. To assess levels of herbivory, we compared clover biomass within herbivore exclosures to the biomass accessible to herbivores. The area and fragmentation of clover habitat, as well as matrix composition, significantly influenced the collective densities of herbivores, although each species exhibited unique responses to habitat structure. Herbivory was strongest in plots with large (64  m2) as compared to small (16  m2) amounts of clover habitat. The difference in clover biomass between the inside and outside of exclosures increased significantly with increasing density of Empoasca fabae but was unrelated to the densities of the other herbivores, suggesting that Empoasca fabae was an exceptionally important herbivore in this system. This study supports the view that herbivore densities and herbivory generally increase with increasing area of plant monocultures, but emphasizes that levels of herbivory may be driven primarily by one or a few key herbivore species.  相似文献

White sands pupfish Cyprinodon tularosa were sampled with minnow traps along the length of Lost River, a highly variable desert stream in New Mexico, to evaluate if their abundance, median standard length ( L S) and sex ratio values differed by microhabitat variables. Habitat measurements were made in a 4 m2 area around the minnow trap. White Sands pupfish populations were primarily structured by L S. As specific conductance and surface area increased, median size of fish decreased. Shallow areas with higher specific conductance were correlated with an increased number of fish.  相似文献

A brief review is provided in some advances in understanding the ecology of pike Esox lucius Linnaeus over the last 10 years. Based on long-term studies and manipulative, often short-term experiments (laboratory, field and mesocosms) several established theories have been supported, as well as new concepts developed. Despite their wide distribution pike show low levels of polymorphism and divergence indicative of a recent common ancestral population. Recent genetic studies, however, indicate a single refugium in North America compared to several refugia in Europe. Pike are found in rivers, lakes and weakly saline waters. Variables such as growth and mortality are mainly affected by factors such as temperature, water transparency, productivity, availability of prey and density of pike and other predators. In choice of habitat pike have been shown to support the ideal free-distribution theory. The importance of macrophyte habitat in the life history of pike has been reconfirmed and pike have been shown to be flexible in response to water clarity. Pike are extremely ‘plastic’ in choice of prey types, prey size and in response to prey behaviour (e.g. they are unaffected by shoal size). Predation by pike not only affects abundance and biomass of prey (including younger and smaller pike through cannibalism which plays a major role in population dynamics, other fishes and invertebrates) but also evolution and adaptation of their morphology (in particular body shape) and behaviours. There appears to be no relationship between stock and recruitment. Recruitment is influenced by several abiotic factors in lakes and rivers. Pike play a major role in structuring freshwater communities and have been used in stocking programmes to improve water quality (biomanipulation). Many new concepts have been developed in pike behaviour in maximizing these stocking programmes both in biomanipulation and fisheries management. Despite many recent advances in understanding the ecology of pike, particularly at the individual level, developments in quantifying and modelling the role of pike as a top predator in large ecosystems have been limited, probably due to the difficulties of sampling natural populations. The influence of hunger level and predation risk on habitat choice and foraging in crucian carp, Carassius carassius, were studied in a laboratory experiment. Experiments were carried out in aquaria with or without a predator (pike, Esox lucius). Habitat use and foraging activity of three-fish foraging groups of either fed or hungry crucian carp were studied. Fish were allowed to choose between an open (risky) habitat with Tubifex worms and a habitat with dense vegetation (safe) without food. Habitat use was significantly affected by both risk of predation and hunger level. Crucian carp spent less time in the open habitat when there was a predator present and they also spent less time there when fed than when hungry. Furthermore, there was a significant interaction between risk of predation and hunger level, indicating a state-dependent trade-off between food acquisition and predator avoidance.  相似文献

1. The effects of predation risk, fish density and discharge on habitat use by juvenile brown trout, Salmo trutta, in four artificial streams were studied. Each stream contained three habitats, riffles, runs and pools, the latter two each being further divided into shallow margins and deeper mid-regions. 2. The presence of northern pike, Esox Indus, caused trout to decrease use of pool midregions, where pike also occurred, and to increase use of other habitats. Increasing the number of trout caused trout to increase use of pools and the shallow margins of runs. Decreasing discharge reduced the area of the run and pool margins covered by water, thereby reducing use of these areas by trout. 3. Habitat selection indices for the different treatments were calculated. The data indicated that riffles and the mid-regions of runs were preferred habitats, whereas run margins and pools were inferior habitats used when intraspecific fish densities were high. 4. Despite density- and discharge-dependent habitat use by trout, the number of trout consumed by pike was independent of trout density and discharge. 5. The results reveal the flexibility of habitat use by trout and illustrate the potential danger of applying data on habitat use in one stream to others where habitat availability and bioric interactions may differ.  相似文献

The specific dispersal/colonization strategies used by species to locate and colonize habitat patches can strongly influence both community and metacommunity structure. Habitat selection theory predicts nonrandom dispersal to and colonization of habitat patches based on their quality. We tested whether habitat selection was capable of generating patterns of diversity and abundance across a transition of canopy coverage (open and closed canopy) and nutrient addition by investigating oviposition site choice in two treefrog species (Hyla) and an aquatic beetle (Tropisternus lateralis), and the colonization dynamics of a diverse assemblage of aquatic insects (primarily beetles). Canopy cover produced dramatic patterns of presence/absence, abundance, and species richness, as open canopy ponds received 99.5% of propagules and 94.6% of adult insect colonists. Nutrient addition affected only Tropisternus oviposition, as females oviposited more egg cases at higher nutrient levels, but only in open canopy ponds. The behavioral partitioning of aquatic landscapes into suitable and unsuitable habitats via habitat selection behavior fundamentally alters how communities within larger ecological landscapes (metacommunities) are linked by dispersal and colonization.  相似文献

Habitat competition in brown trout Salmo trutta and Siberian sculpin Cottus poecilopus was investigated by varying density, fish size, and species composition in stream channels providing areas of different substratum particle sizes. In allopatry, both small (52 ± 4 mm L T) and large (86 ± 6 mm L T) brown trout exhibited strong preference for the intermediate (8–11 cm diameter) and large (17–21 cm) gravel substrata. There was a tendency for more brown trout to occupy finer (2–4 cm) substrata with increasing density, in particular for large brown trout. Also, more small brown trout were observed on finer substrata when tested with large brown trout, suggesting interspecific competition for restricted space. Both small (56 ± 6 mm L T) and large (88 ± 10 mm L T) Siberian sculpin preferred the large gravel in all tests, and did not change their substratum preferences much with increasing densities, suggesting higher tolerance for 'crowding'. The large Siberian sculpin preferred the coarser substratum, and the largest individuals were consistently found on it. In sympatry with large Siberian sculpin, habitat displacement of brown trout occurred, indicative of interspecific competition. A higher proportion of small and large brown trout occupied the finer substrata than in allopatry. Habitat selection by large Siberian sculpin appeared to be unaffected by species composition and density. Small Siberian sculpin were displaced to finer substrata when tested with large Siberian sculpin, suggesting intraspecific competition. The results indicate that Siberian sculpin are potential habitat competitors for young brown trout.  相似文献

Habitat structure determines spider diversity in highland ponds   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Wetlands (e.g. ponds, meadows) can be found in many landscapes, playing an important role in maintaining regional biodiversity and supporting heterogeneous communities. Spiders are diversified predators that are highly influenced by changes in plant community structure, heterogeneous habitats sustain high spider diversity and abundance. We investigated the characteristics of spider biodiversity in ponds with different habitat structures, by examining patterns across habitats of ponds with different vegetation levels. Sampling took place in four occasions over a year. We compared spider abundance, species richness and composition among ponds including distinct vegetation variables, related to life form, type of leaves, coverage and height. Overall 1174 individuals (194 adults) of 11 families and 37 morphospecies were sampled. We found mostly expected differences in the manner that communities were structured between different habitats. Thus, higher variability of abundance was explained for higher habitat structure of ponds. We also found differences in species composition between ponds with low emergent vegetation and higher habitat structures. Additionaly, spiders were consistently structured more by turnover than nestedness components, with a greater beta diversity of web-builders. Our results suggest varying levels of habitat structures and species substitution shape pond spider communities, depending on habitat heterogeneity and spider guild. Those findings demonstrate the clear role of spatial habitat structure, with more spider species preferring to build webs or actively hunt at vegetated environments on ponds.  相似文献

137Cs concentrations in perch Perca fluviatilis , pike Esox lucius and roach Rutilus rutilus obtained from lakes of different size and water quality in an area which received about 10–67 kBq m−2137Cs, were compared with environmental data. Radiocaesium concentrations were highest in pike, and were about two to three times higher in the pike and perch than in the roach. The largest perch had about four times more 137Cs than the smallest ones, but the activities in the pike and roach were independent of fish size. All of the water quality parameters examined correlated with 137Cs concentrations in the fish, but the concentrations of 137Cs in the bottom sediment did not. l37Cs fallout and water retention time in lakes showed a positive correlation with fish 137Cs, while the size of the catchment area, phosphorus content of the water, water colour, pH and electrical conductivity showed a negative one. Thus there was more 137Cs in the fish from the oligotrophic lakes than from the eutrophic ones, from the less humic lakes than from the more humic ones, from the more acid than from the less acid ones and from the lakes containing less potassium than from those containing more potassium. The depth, area and volume of the lake did not affect radiocaesium in the fish. Regression equations are presented for predicting 137Cs in fish on the basis of environmental data. Fallout, total phosphorus and pH together had the highest influence in multiple regression models but were less significant in the roach than in the perch and pike.  相似文献
