Studies were conducted to determine the selection of humans, chickens and rabbits by Culicidae in three different environments in the province of Chaco, Argentina. Mosquitoes were collected fortnightly using cylindrical metal traps containing animal bait (chickens and rabbits). The mosquitoes were collected between June 2001-May 2002. During the same period and with the same frequency, mosquitoes biting the human operators of the traps were collected during the first 15 min of exposure within different time intervals: from 09:00 am-11:00 am, 01:00 pm-03:00 pm, 05:00 pm-07:00 pm and 09:00 pm-10:00 pm. A total of 19,430 mosquitoes of 49 species belonging to 10 genera were collected. Culex species mainly selected chicken bait and Wyeomyia species selected rabbit bait. Ochlerotatus and Psorophora species were more abundant in rabbit-baited traps. Anopheles triannulatus, Coquillettidia nigricans, Ochlerotatus scapularis, Mansonia titillans and Psorophora albigenu showed a strong attraction for human bait. The Anopheles, Coquillettidia, Culex and Mansonia species were more active between 05:00 pm-09:00 pm, while Ochlerotatus, Psorophora, Haemagogus and Wyeomyia were most active from 09:00 am-07:00 pm. This study provides additional information about the biology and ecology of arbovirus vectors in Chaco.  相似文献

A combination of technics was used to assess landscape variables associated with the presence of the globally vulnerable giant armadillo (Priodontes maximus) in its southernmost distribution in the Chaco region of Argentina. Between 2017 and 2019, 369 km of foot and vehicle transects were run to search and record indirect evidence of the species (burrows and feeding excavations) in areas with different level of protection, including two national parks, three provincial parks, and non-protected areas. Distance sampling was used to estimate density of excavations and effective strip width sampled to estimate the surveyed area. Resource selection functions (RSFs) were used to assess the variables associated to its presence by comparing locations of excavations with available habitat within surveyed areas. In these RSF models covariates that may affect habitat use and survival of giant armadillos were included: three categorical ones: soil type, vegetation cover (forests vs. grasslands), protection level (national park, provincial park, non-protected), and five continuous variables: distance to nearest river, distance to nearest national park, distance to closest protected area, distance to nearest transformed area, and distance to natural grasslands. Habitat use was modelled pooling together burrows and feeding excavations, and models were validated with a pool of records previously excluded from the analysis. A total of 104 records of burrows and 344 of feeding excavations were recorded. The probability of occurrence of giant armadillo excavations was much higher within forests, within or near protected areas, and increased with the distance to rivers, to transformed areas, and to grasslands. In the study area, only 10% of the landscape surveyed has good- to high-probability of occurrence of giant armadillos. The maintenance of large surfaces of native forests and the consolidation, improvement, and connectivity among protected areas seem to be essential for the long-term survival of the endangered giant armadillo in Argentina.  相似文献

Understanding the spatial patterns of species distribution is essential to characterize the structure of communities, to optimize species inventories and to evaluate the impact of biotic and abiotic variables. Here we describe the spatial structure of the distribution of leaf litter ant species, and of biotic factors that could explain it, in a subtropical semi-deciduous forest of the Argentinian Chaco, characterized by a dense understorey of shrubs and terrestrial bromeliads. Environmental variables (leaf litter quantity and ground bromeliad density) were measured and ants were collected in 1 m2 quadrats distributed along two 200 m transects at intervals of 1.25 m. Overall 87 species were collected. Sixteen positive associations and a single negative association were observed between the 11 most frequent species taken pair-wise. Our results suggest that the spatial distribution of leaf litter ants was determined at two different scales. At a small scale (period below 10 m) a periodic spatial structure, likely due to intraspecific competition, produced a succession of peaks of abundance separated by gaps. At a larger scale (period around 50 m), periodically distributed environmental factors induced aggregates of colonies of species responding positively to these factors. A high quantity of leaf litter and, to a lesser extent, a high density of ground bromeliads promoted a high density and a high species richness of ants. Numerically dominant ants being generally positively associated, interspecific competition was apparently weak. All ant species whose abundance was correlated with an environmental factor were not completely spatially structured by it. Animals can show preference for a particular background as a way of decreasing visibility. Species with color polymorphism may have morph‐dependent background preference. I test this hypothesis on the orb‐weaving spider Parawixia bistriata. Adult females of P. bistriata present two distinct morphs characterized by brown and yellow opisthosomata. This nocturnal spider can be found in its retreat on the vegetation during the day. In order to examine whether females exhibit substrate preference dependent on their color morph, I first recorded the distribution of color morphs on different substrates (leaf and branch) and then performed a mark and release experiment. Field censuses indicated that the yellow morph was associated with leaves while the brown morph was found on either substrate type. The results of a mark and reciprocal release experiment agreed with the censuses and suggest that the two morphs differ in their association to substrate type: yellow females were associated with the leaf substrate, while brown females showed no association to a particular substrate type. Possible forces behind these differences in substrate choice are discussed.  相似文献

We analyzed the abundance and diversity of Heteromyid and Murid rodents in the Lagos de Montebello National Park and adjacent areas, Chiapas, Mexico. We sampled three habitat types with different degrees of disturbance: pine-oak-liquidambar forest, ecotone and crop farming lands. Habitat types were defined considering characteristics such as heterogeneity, structural complexity and arboreal cover. We obtained ancillary habitat data considered important for small mammal requirements. Data on rodent communities were obtained by capture-mark-recapture between February and October 1996. We made 410 captures in 3820 trap-nights effort. Ten species were recorded, including one endemic with restricted distribution in Chiapas. Mouse diversity in the forest was significantly higher than within the farm lands. A Kendall correlation analysis showed positive relationship between rodent community species richness and habitat heterogeneity. Diversity of rodents was associated with the habitat complexity and structural elements, and negatively correlated with farming intensity. We found a high beta diversity and low similarity of the rodent communities in the three different habitats. Community composition strongly changed from the forest through the ecotone into the farm lands, with five species gained and seven species lost. The highest species richness was found in the ecotone; however, it showed a strong dominance of a single species that can convert into a plague of crops, and relatively low abundance of the other species. The pine-oak-liquidambar forest had the highest diversity indices, sheltering a particular rodent community within the study area, it therefore probably has the most important role in the conservation of the local biodiversity.  相似文献

Located in central South America, the Chaco is a large subtropical dry forest characterized by plants with xeromorphic features, including numerous cacti. In the Brazilian Chaco at the northeasternmost part of the Chaquenian region, Echinopsis rhodotricha (Cactaceae, Trichocereeae) is one of the species threatened by intense deforestation caused by expanding pastureland. This study characterizes the microsatellite loci isolated from E. rhodotricha and cross-amplification in thirteen other cactus species. Twelve microsatellite loci were developed from an enriched genomic library. Eight of these were polymorphic and characterized in 48 individuals from three E. rhodotricha populations. The loci showed a mean of 3.2 alleles per locus and overall levels of expected and observed heterozygosities ranging from 0.00 to 0.83 and 0.00 to 0.66, respectively. Five loci showed significant departures from the Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium and also exhibited signs of null alleles. Cross-amplification in other Cactaceae species was successful, ranging from one (Ferocactus latispinus, Cacteae and Harrisia adscendens, Trichocereeae) to twelve loci (Echinopsis calochlora, Trichocereeae). The development of these microsatellite markers will contribute to investigations of population structure, genetic diversity, and gene flow in E. rhodotricha populations, as well as in other cactus species, providing information useful for the creation and delimitation of conservation areas in the Brazilian Chaco region.  相似文献

Allorhogas cordobensis sp. nov. (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Doryctinae) is described from the province of Córdoba, Argentina. Its representatives can be distinguished from all other known species of the genus by the unusual morphology of the ovipositor tip and the expanded clypeus apically. Remarkably, this species is also characterized by having a tridentate mandible, a feature known only in exodont braconids, mostly of the subfamily Alysiinae. The new species was reared from stem galls on Lycium cestroides, which constitutes the second record of an Allorhogas species associated with galls on representatives of the plant family Solanaceae.  相似文献

Mitochondrial DNA from 141 individuals was typed for diagnostic restriction sites and the 9-bp region V deletion to examine the distribution of the founding mtDNA lineage haplotypes in three Amerindian populations (Mataco, Toba, and Pilagá) who currently inhabit the Argentinian part of the Gran Chaco. All four lineages were identified in the three tribes and four population samples studied. Disregarding ethnic or geographic origin, haplogroups B and D exhibit high incidence among the Gran Chaco inhabitants, whereas haplogroups A and C are present in a lower frequency. Three individuals possess none of the characteristic markers and, therefore, could not be assigned to one of those lineages. A neighbor-joining representation of F(ST) distances reflects the current geographic location of the populations, and this also corresponds to their historic distribution. After separating South America into four major regions (Tropical Forest, Andes, Gran Chaco, and Patagonia-Tierra del Fuego), the Gran Chaco populations present the highest average intragroup variability (Hs = 0.64) as well as the lowest intergroup diversity (G(')(ST) = 0.06). These findings suggest high levels of gene flow among the Chaco tribes, as well as with neighbor populations from outside the region.  相似文献

Insect parasitism patterns are influenced by vegetation structure and landscape complexity. Our objective was to examine the effects of vegetation structure and landscape complexity on parasitism based on direct measurements of structure and diversity indices as well as on metrics based on remote sensing using Quickbird images. We collected 2266 lepidopteran larvae and pupae, including different families and habits, to estimate parasitism, and recorded vegetation characteristics in five 100-m2 transects and 18 1 ha-plots in the dry Chaco, Northwest Argentina. We calculated landscape metrics and semivariograms in the plots from the image. The plots represented four “complexity groups”: agricultural, riparian/hedgerow, bare ground, and forest plots. Mean parasitism in the study sites was 10.7% (min: 0%, max: 23%). Parasitism was highest in agricultural plots, lowest in forest plots, and intermediate in riparian/hedgerow and bare ground plots. The landscape model explained parasitism more than the vegetation model. The landscape final model included Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) Range, a measure of landscape heterogeneity, and Mean Shape Index, a measure of patch shape irregularity, and their interaction. The vegetation model included basal area and the Coefficient of Variation of tree density among transects, a measure of tree spatial distribution within a plot. Our results agree with previous studies that found higher parasitism in agricultural vs. non-agricultural environments in the subtropics, while riparian/hedgerow plots were important for conserving parasitism, as reported for temperate environments. We showed that under-explored tools such as the semivariogram and satellite band combinations were useful for the assessment of parasitism and that studying vegetation and landscape complexity simultaneously can help us examine mechanisms in detail. The identified variables related to high parasitism should be used for image classifications with a functional approach.  相似文献

Social behavior of the giant Chacoan peccary, also known as the taguá, is relatively unknown due to the harsh environment and endangered status of the population. In order to characterize feeding and social behaviors, a group of 7 adults, 2 juveniles, and 3 infants was observed in their feeding area for 99.25 hours over 18 days during October and November 1989. All animals were housed in a 2 ha natural-habitat enclosure in the Chaco of Paraguay. It was determined that these peccaries fed in intervals throughout daylight hours and that juveniles spent more time per approach in the feeding area than adult males. It was also observed that infants were accepted and well tolerated by the entire group, including adult males. These observations have relevance to taguá behavior in the wild and provide new insights into social patterns of this recently discovered species.  相似文献

We developed chronologies based on the width of tree rings, total area of vessels, and the number of vessels per tree ring of the Prosopis flexuosa wood samples from the xerophytic woodlands of central Argentina. We evaluated the influence of climate on these tree-ring characteristics considering the period from 1940 to 2004 (65 years). The width of the rings, the number of vessels, and the total area of vessels were positively influenced by regional precipitation corresponding to the seasonalized November to December period, which reflects the importance of the water availability in the initial stage of the formation of the wood. The width of the rings and the total area of vessels were negatively influenced by temperature during the same period, while the number of vessels was not significantly correlated with temperature. The high temperatures in spring increase evapotranspiration, which reduces water availability to plants and results in an inverse growth response. This study was the first to develop chronologies based on anatomical characters of wood from the arid and semiarid regions of South America and with significant applications in ecological and climatic studies.  相似文献

Most bird species that nest in tree cavities globally occur in diverse assemblages in little-studied tropical and subtropical forests which have high rates of habitat loss. Conservation of these communities will require an understanding of how species traits, such as body size, influence nest-site selection. We examined patterns of nest-site selection of secondary cavity-nesting birds at the nest patch, tree and cavity scale, and investigated how these patterns are influenced by body size. Using conditional logistic regression, we compared characteristics of 155 nest tree cavities paired with 155 unused tree cavities in quebracho Schinopsis balansae forests in Chaco National Park, Argentina (2016–2018). The odds of a cavity being used for nesting increased with its depth and height above ground, decreased with entrance size, and were greater for dead trees than live. Small-bodied (13–90 g) species used floor diameters in proportion to availability, but medium- (150–200 g) and large-bodied (400–700 g) species selected cavities with larger floors. Model selection indicated that characteristics at the nest patch scale (canopy cover, tree density) had little effect on nest-site selection when cavity-scale variables were included. Cavity floor diameter, entrance size, cavity height and tree diameter (but not cavity depth) increased with body mass, and larger bird species more often used live trees. Two tree species proved to be key for the community: large and medium-sized birds used almost exclusively large live Schinopsis balansae, whereas small birds used live and dead Prosopis spp. in a proportion greater than its availability. Small birds could be differentiated according to species-specific cavity characteristics, but medium and large species overlapped considerably with one another. Although body mass explained much of the overall variation in tree and cavity characteristics between small and medium/large species, several small-bodied species consistently used cavities outside of the expected characteristics for their body size, suggesting that other natural history traits may play important roles in nest-site selection by small-bodied birds. To retain the full suite of secondary cavity-nesters in species-rich tropical and subtropical forests, it is necessary to conserve a diversity of trees and cavities that meet the full range of nesting requirements of these trait-diverse communities.  相似文献

Ectotherm species are not capable of generating metabolic heat; therefore, they present different strategies for regulating their body temperatures, ranging from a precise degree of thermoregulation to a passive thermoconformity with ambient temperatures. In reptiles, aerial basking is the most common mechanism for gaining heat. However, among aquatic reptiles, such as freshwater turtles, aquatic basking is also frequent. Hydromedusa tectifera is a turtle of exclusively aquatic and nocturnal habits widely distributed in South America. We studied the relationship between body temperature (Tb) of H. tectifera and its habitat, and explored the effects of sex, life stage and body size and mass on Tb. Fieldwork was conducted in two streams of a mountain area of central Argentina. We recorded cloacal temperature, size and mass of 84 turtles. We also determined individuals’ sex and life stage (adult/juvenile). Regarding ambient temperatures, we measured water temperature on the surface (Tsurf) and at depth of turtle capture (Tdepth) and air temperature. Mean Tb was 18.58 °C (Min = 10.20 °C; Max = 25.70 °C). Tsurf and Tdepth were highly correlated. Multi-model analysis using Akaike criterion indicated that Tb was strongly associated with water temperature, whereas air temperature and body size and mass did not show a significant effect. There was also no effect of turtle sex or life stage on Tb. Our results indicate that H. tectifera is a thermoconformer and eurythermal species. A nocturnal pattern of activity and a fully aquatic lifestyle are suggested as determinant factors.  相似文献

Breeding biology in Phyllomedusa sauvagii is related to vegetation since the species encloses its eggs in leaves above water. Considering that arid environments may represent high risks of death by desiccation for amphibians with this reproductive mode, we evaluated plant characteristics associated with sites used for oviposition in semi-permanent ponds in the Arid Chaco region of Argentina. Plant characteristics were used to fit a statistical habitat selection model that allows the prediction of nest presence. Our results show that P. sauvagii needs substrate with specific features for oviposition that would help to reduce the probability of eggs and tadpoles desiccation.  相似文献

In arid environments, direct facilitation (microhabitat amelioration) and indirect facilitation (‘associational resistance’ via protection from herbivory) among plants of different species may act simultaneously. Little is known about their relative effects. One way to disentangle the effects is by evaluating spatial associations. We examined the relative importance of these two mechanisms of facilitation in the semiarid Chaco vegetation of north‐central Argentina, through an eight‐way observational study in which we quantified the degree of spatial association between saplings of each of two key tree species, Schinopsis lorentzii (Anacardiaceae) and Aspidosperma quebracho‐blanco (Apocynaceae), with shrub neighbours either possessing spines or without spines and in both an ungrazed site and a site with a long history of cattle grazing. We analysed data across 400 subparcels at each site with spatial analysis by distance indices. Saplings of both tree species showed positive spatial associations with spiny shrubs in the grazed site but not in the ungrazed site, and never with non‐spiny shrubs. This result suggests that spiny shrubs may indeed provide associational resistance for saplings of key tree species in grazed habitats in these dry subtropical forests, that is, that indirect facilitation may predominate over direct facilitation. If confirmed by experimental studies, this result can have implications for the silvopastoral management of rapidly expanding ranches in the semiarid Chaco, where current practice includes the near elimination of native shrubs.  相似文献

The scarab beetle genus Pseudogeniates Ohaus (Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae: Rutelini) is endemic to Argentina. The genus includes three species: Pseudogeniates cordobaensis Soula, Pseudogeniates intermedius Ohaus, and Pseudogeniates richterianus Ohaus. We characterize the genus, provide a key to species, redescribe and diagnose each species, provide spatial and temporal distributions, and discuss distributions of the species in relation to eco-regions and areas of endemism in Argentina.  相似文献

Abstract

The Tayassuidae is one of the first families of North American immigrant mammals that arrived into South America during the ‘Great American Biotic Interchange’. They have been found associated with Late Cenozoic deposits mainly in Argentina and Brazil, but also in Uruguay, Bolivia, Colombia, Peru and Venezuela. Theirs records within Argentina come from the Pampean Region, Mesopotamia and north-central region. Here, we report the first record of P. carlesi with precise stratigraphic (26.630 ± 370 14C years BP, Late Pleistocene) data in Argentina, precisely from the Chacoan region. This specimen represents the most complete fossil material of this extinct species, increasing its morphological and morphometrical knowledge, and it provides relevant ecological and climatic information. From a palaeoenvironmental point of view, the fauna registered in this paleontological site, includes taxa mainly adapted to open or semi-open and arid or semi-arid environments. The bearing sediments and the peculiarities of the faunal assemblages, as well as the chronological data, allow confirming that arid and semiarid conditions, with scarce or absent vegetation cover were developed in this area of Argentina during the last part of MIS 3 and beginning of MIS 2. These environmental conditions favored the settlement of megamammals adapted to open environments.  相似文献

This paper discusses the concept of stability in a concrete natural situation: the gallery forests in the Chaco region. On the basis of Pickett's definition of minimal structure, stability is considered as the response which enables a system to keep its (minimal and configurational) structure once an alteration has taken place (Pickett et al. 1989). Resilience is, instead, another kind of response which enables the system to keep its minimal structure intact regardless of what might happen to its configurational structure.The system to be analysed is that of the gallery forests in the Lower Bermejo Basin, in Argentina, which is subject to intense river bed migrations and floods caused by this allochthonous watercourse. The effect of this alteration is analysed on different space-time scales.Locally floods behave as a completely unpredictable phenomena, starting a complex floristic changes mechanism that would eventually enable the system to recover its structure once the alteration is over. These forests appear to be resilient but little adaptable, with low resistence and low elasticity. The latter, when combined with the alternation's return interval, which is under the ecosystem's generation time, upset the theoretical stability conditions, thus making the system seem apparently unstable.Regionally, instead, migrations act as regular and permanent phenomena (highly predictable) always affecting some part of the area. The autochthonous system river side forests have become adapted through evolution to this new situation, so much so that this phenomenon has become a part of the system's internal dynamics. Chaco physiognomy, were it not due to the allochthonous phenomena affecting it today, would certainly be very different from the present one.  相似文献
