In the western Arabian Sea (WAS), the highest seasonal sea surface temperature (SST) difference presently occurs between May and August. In order to gain an understanding on how monsoonal upwelling modulates the SST difference between these two months, we have computed SST for the months of May and August based on census counts of planktonic foraminifers by using the artificial neural network (ANN) technique. The SST difference between May and August exhibits three distinct phases: i) a moderate SST difference in the late Holocene (0–3.5 ka) is attributable to intense upwelling during August, ii) a minimum SST difference from 4 to 12 ka is due to weak upwelling during the month of August, and iii) the highest SST difference during the last glacial interval (19 to 22 ka) with high Globigerina bulloides % could have been caused by the occurrence of a prolonged upwelling season (from May through July) and maximum difference in the incoming solar radiation between May and August. Overall, variations in the SST difference between May and August show that the timing of intense upwelling in the Western Arabian Sea over the last 22 kyr has been variable over the months of June, July and August.  相似文献

The late Quaternary record of Pulleniatina obliquiloculata was investigated from two well dated sediment cores from the Andaman Sea (NE Indian Ocean) to examine its paleoceanographic significance and the presence of the Pulleniatina Minimum Events (PME) in the western North Pacific. As in the Pacific, our study shows that PMEs exist in the Indian Ocean albeit with a lower intensity. The Holocene PME occurs between 4.5 and 3.0 cal ka BP with a considerable reduction in P. obliquiloculata abundance, and which matches well with the Pacific records influenced by the Kuroshio Current. Additionally, two significant minimum events of P. obliquiloculata are also seen during the Younger Dryas (YD) and late Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, 20–18 cal ka BP). Overall, the PMEs of the Andaman Sea are not current driven events like in the western Pacific margin either by the weakening of the Kuroshio Current or reduced winter SSTs. The PMEs of the Andaman Sea are characterised by lower abundances of thermocline species indicating the increased depth of the thermocline (DOT) and reduced winter SSTs mainly during the minimum events of the YD and late LGM. The high SSTs during the Holocene PME make this event a mystery. However, the presence of PMEs in the Andaman Sea suggests that these events are not confined to areas influenced by the Kuroshio Current but may be responding to a broad scale oceanographic–climatic process or mechanism which needs to be explored with a detailed study.  相似文献

Planktonic foraminifera collected from a sediment trap deployed off Hainan in the northwestern South China Sea (SCS-NW) between July 2012 and April 2013 were studied to evaluate their seasonal variability and ecology as well as to infer the factors controlling their shell fluxes. The total planktonic foraminifera flux, as well as the fluxes of the dominant species (Globigerinoides ruber, Globigerinoides sacculifer and Neogloboquadrina dutertrei), showed three distinct maxima during SW-monsoon in August 2012, the SW-NE intermonsoon in October 2012 and the NE-monsoon in December 2012–February 2013. These periods were characterized by upwelling, aerosol fallout, and intense wind mixing, respectively, from which the foraminiferal assemblages benefitted, as indicated by the close correlation between wind speed, sea surface temperature (SST), chlorophyll a concentration (Chl-a), δ18O of G. ruber and the shell fluxes. The correlation also suggests that temperature and food availability might have been the primary drivers of the observed changes in foraminiferal abundance. The offset between the SST deduced from flux-weighted of G. ruber δ18O and annual mean SST is only ∼0.3 °C, much lower than ∼5.2 °C between the summer and winter temperature, indicating a balanced seasonality bias in the shell flux. The linear regression between the satellite-derived sea surface temperature and G. ruber δ18O reveals the strong potential of this species, at least in the studied region, as an ecological indicator for past oceanic environments.  相似文献

The temporal and spatial distributions of the radiolarian species Spongodiscus biconcavus Haeckel are investigated to understand the paleoceanographic evolution of the Bering Sea region during the last 4.3 Myr based on extensive study of samples collected at Site U1340 during the IODP Expedition 323. The biostratigraphic resolution for the region is also improved by multidisciplinary studies of radiolarians, diatoms, dinoflagellates, ebridians, and silicoflagellates. The results demonstrate that the abundance variation of S. biconcavus during the last 4.3 Myr is closely related to global climate changes, and the species can be used as a warm water and climate proxy in the Bering Sea. Based on the downhole profiles of S. biconcavus and other parameters, we conclude that the southern Bering Sea was associated with a warm water mass prior to 3.147 Ma but it gradually cooled thereafter. From 2.793 Ma to 0.889 Ma, a cold water mass and sea-ice predominated in the Bering Sea, in response to the early Northern Hemisphere glaciation (NHG). Furthermore, the climate suddenly became much cooler post 0.889 Ma. Nevertheless, a reversal of this cooling trend occurred after the Mid-Pleistocene Climatic Transition (∼1.2 Ma), marked by reoccurrence of warm water and reduced sea-ice in the Bering Sea until the final retreat of warm water mass from the Bering Sea after 0.239 Ma. These processes are correlated with biogeographic expansion and retreat of warm water planktonic species.  相似文献

Sediment trap samples collected over a seven-year period (February 1991–October 1997) from Guaymas Basin in the Gulf of California were used to study the oxygen isotope composition of five species of planktonic foraminifera, Globigerinoides ruber (white), Globigerina bulloides, Neogloboquadrina dutertrei, Pulleniatina obliquiloculata, and Globorotalia menardii. The δ18O data were analyzed for temporal and interspecies variability and were compared to local hydrography to evaluate the use of each species in reconstructing past oceanographic applications. The two surface dwelling species, G. ruber and G. bulloides displayed the lowest δ18O values (~ 0.0 to ? 5.0‰), while δ18O values for the thermocline dwelling N. dutertrei, P. obliquiloculata, and G. menardii were higher (~ 0.0 to ? 2.0‰). The δ18O of G. ruber most accurately records measured sea surface temperatures (SSTs) throughout the year. G. bulloides δ18O tracks SSTs during the winter–spring upwelling period but for the remainder of the year records slightly colder, subsurface temperatures. The difference between the δ18O of the surface dwelling species, G. ruber and G. bulloides, and that of the thermocline dwelling species, N. dutertrei, P. obliquiloculata, and G. menardii, was used to estimate the surface to thermocline temperature gradient. During the winter these δ18O differences are small (~ 0.50‰) reflecting a well-mixed water column. These interspecies δ18O differences increase during the summer (~ 1.90‰) in response to the strong thermal stratification that exists at this time of year.  相似文献

The foraminiferal order Rotaliida represents one third of the extant genera of foraminifers. The shells of these organisms are extensively used to decipher characteristics of marine ecosystems and global climate events. It was shown that shell calcite of benthic Rotaliida is twinned. We extend our previous work on microstructure and texture characterization of benthic Rotaliida and investigate shell calcite organization for planktonic rotaliid species. Based on results gained from electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) and field emission electron microscopy (FESEM) imaging of chemically etched/fixed shell surfaces we show for the planktonic species Globigerinoides sacculifer, Pulleniatina obliquiloculata, Orbulina universa (belonging to the two main planktonic, the globigerinid and globorotaliid, clades): very extensive 60°-{0 0 1}-twinning of the calcite and describe a new and specific microstructure for the twinned crystals. We address twin and crystal morphology development from nucleation within a biopolymer template (POS) to outermost shell surfaces. We demonstrate that the calcite of the investigated planktonic Rotaliida forms through competitive growth. We complement the structural knowledge gained on the clade 1 and clade 2 species with EBSD results of Globigerinita glutinata and Candeina nitida shells (clade 3 planktonic species). The latter are significantly less twinned and have a different shell calcite microstructure. We demonstrate that the calcite of all rotaliid species is twinned, however, to different degrees. We discuss for the species of the three planktonic clades characteristics of the twinned calcite and of other systematic misorientations. We address the strong functionalization of foraminiferal calcite and indicate how the twinning affects biocalcite material properties.  相似文献

High-resolution sea surface temperatures (SST) derived from Mg/Ca ratios of Globeriginoides sacculifer at ODP Site 1144 were reported to reveal the SST changes during the last 260 ka in the northern South China Sea (SCS). The results indicate an average Holocene SST of about 26.7 °C, about 3.6 °C increase from LGM to the Holocene, and higher temperature during MIS 5.5 than the Holocene. These agree well with other foraminifer Mg/Ca and Uk37 SST records in this region. The Mg/Ca records suggest warmer SSTs during MIS 3 in the northern SCS, compared with those in the eastern Pacific. Strong East Asian summer monsoon during MIS 3 indicated by paleoclimate records from nearby continents may account for it. Step-wise increases during terminations are shown in our SST record, and the beginning of deglacial warming occurs at about 19 ka, which precedes the change of oxygen isotopes, suggesting a tropical driven forcing for the SST change in the northern SCS. This is further supported by a robust semi-precessional cycle centering at  9.1 ka in the spectra of the SST record, which is absent in that of the oxygen isotopes. However, tropical driven forcing seems not to be indicated in another Mg/Ca SST record in the northern SCS [Oppo, D.W. and Sun, Y.B., 2005. Amplitude and timing of sea-surface temperature change in the northern South China Sea: Dynamic link to the East Asian monsoon. Geology, 33 (10): 785–788.]. The discrepancy may be caused by different post-deposition dissolutions of foraminifer tests at these two sites. Details about the modification of foraminifer Mg/Ca ratios after burial, however, are not well known in this region, and further studies are needed.  相似文献

Abundance and distribution of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium tamarense species complex resting cyst were investigated in the eastern Bering Sea and the Chukchi Sea for the first time. Sediment samples (top 0–3 cm depth) were collected from the continental shelf of the eastern Bering Sea (17 stations) and the Chukchi Sea (13 stations) together with a long core sample (top 0–21 cm depth) from one station in the Chukchi Sea during 2009–2012. The cysts were enumerated using the primuline staining method. Species identification of the cysts was carried out with multiplex PCR assay and the plate morphology of vegetative cells germinated from cysts in the both areas. Alexandrium cysts were widely detected in the both areas, ranging from not detected (<1 cysts cm−3) to 835 cysts cm−3 wet sediment in the eastern Bering Sea and from not detected (<1 cysts cm−3) to 10,600 cysts cm−3 in the Chukchi Sea, and all isolated cysts were genetically and morphologically identified as the North American clade A. tamarense. Their cysts were mainly distributed in the shallow continental shelf where the water depth was less than 100 m in both areas. The cysts were detected from the deep layer (18–21 cm depth of sediment core) of the long core sample. The present study confirmed the abundant existence of A. tamarense with wide range of distribution in these areas. This fact suggests that A. tamarense vegetative cells have appeared in the water column in the both areas. Furthermore, these abundant cyst depositions indicate that this species originally distributed in the Arctic and subarctic regions and well adapted to the environments in the marginal ice zone.  相似文献

The 77 m sediment core from Firth of Tay provides complete record of glacial retreat and Holocene climate change on the Weddell Sea side of the Antarctic Peninsula that began ~ 9400 yr BP. Benthic foraminiferal data indicate significant environmental changes as recorded at ~ 600 m water depth at the drill site. Three foraminiferal assemblages (FAs): Globocassidulina spp.–Fursenkoina fusiformis FA, Miliammina arenacea FA, and Paratrochammina bartramiPortatrochammina antarctica FA reflect increasingly glacier-distal conditions. They started with most glacier-proximal conditions that lasted until ~ 8800 yr BP, which is indicated by Cribroelphidium cf. webbi, and continued with elevated input of coarse glacial sediment until ~ 7750 yr BP. The Mid-Holocene Climatic Optimum between 7750 and 6000 yr BP appears to be the time of highest primary production, which led to higher corrosiveness of bottom waters, and biased species composition of the M. arenacea FA. It was terminated by minor cooling. The Neoglacial, that took place after ~ 3500 yr BP, is marked by an increase in P. bartrami and P. antarctica, the major constituents of the P. bartramiP. antarctica FA. This FA became periodically dominant after ~ 900 yr BP indicating increasingly glacier-distal conditions due to cooling coinciding with increasing aridity, rising altitude of the glacial equilibrium line, and less glacial influence on marine biota. Episodic high-abundances of a fourth foraminiferal assemblage (Globocassidulina biora FA) that occurs practically throughout the core is difficult to interpret explicitly. Although there are some concerns if G. biora FA represents in situ fauna, it appears to be an opportunistic fauna that dominated during periods of more glacial sediment input and sediment remobilization leading to better carbonate preservation.  相似文献

A high resolution micropalaeontological study of the core MD 04-2797 CQ recovered in the Sicilian–Tunisian Strait provides insights into the paleoclimatic history of the Mediterranean Sea at the transition between the western and eastern basin over the last 30 ka. Using the analysis of dinoflagellate cyst and planktonic foraminiferal assemblages, we reconstruct the paleoenvironmental changes that took place in this region. High abundances of cold temperate dinocyst species (Nematosphaeropsis labyrinthus, Spiniferites elongatus, Bitectatodinium tepikiense) and the polar planktonic foraminifera Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (left coiling) reveal three major cooling events synchronous with North Atlantic Henrich events 1 and 2 (H1 and H2) and the European and North Atlantic Younger Dryas event. During the Holocene, the presence of warm dinocyst species (Spiniferites mirabilis and Impagidinium aculeatum) and planktonic foraminifera (Globorotalia inflata and Globigerinoides ruber), reflects a significant increase of sea surface temperatures in the western Mediterranean basin, but a full warming was not recorded until 1500 years after the onset of the Holocene. Moreover, our results show that the Holocene was interrupted by at least four brief cooling events at ~ 9.2 ka, ~ 8 ka, ~ 7 ka and ~ 2.2 ka cal. BP, which may be correlated to climatic events recorded in Greenland ice cores and in the Atlantic Ocean.  相似文献

In the last few decades, the frequency of the toxic benthic dinoflagellate Ostreopsis cf. ovata proliferation has increased in the Mediterranean Sea. These blooms are associated with harmful effects on human health and the environment. The present work provides the first long term study on the spatio-temporal distribution of O. cf. ovata in relation to physical parameters in the Gulf of Gabès coastal waters (south-eastern Mediterranean Sea), as well as its morphological, molecular and physiological features. The strains of O. cf. ovata were identified morphologically by light and epifluorescence microscopy. The morphology and the size range of cultured strains were similar to those described regarding O. cf. ovata isolated from the Mediterranean Sea. The ultrastructural analysis of O. cf. ovata cells using the transmission electron microscopy showed the presence of numerous vesicles (VE) containing spirally coiled fibers (SCFs) connected to the mucus canal (CH). The phylogenetic tree based on the internal transcribed spacer region containing the 5.8S rDNA (ITS-5.8S rDNA) revealed that O. cf. ovata strains were placed into the Mediterranean/Atlantic clade. In addition, O. cf. ovata toxicity was evaluated by the mouse bioassay and a dose level  4 × 104 cells was found to be lethal to mice. The examination of the O. cf. ovata occurrence in the Gulf of Gabès at a large temporal scale (1997–2012) revealed a clear seasonal pattern with dominance from midsummer (July) to late autumn (November). Furthermore, a positive correlation was found between the abundance of O. cf. ovata and salinity, whereas no correlation was found as regards temperature. The occurrence of O. cf. ovata was only detected at salinity above 35 and the highest concentrations were observed at 45. Laboratory experiments confirmed such a result and showed that isolated O. cf. ovata strains had optimal growth at salinity ranging between 35 and 45, with its peak at 40.  相似文献

Using the modern analog methodology applied to planktonic foraminifers, we analyze the relation between the frequency of the coiling type in Neogloboquadrina populations and the sea-surface temperatures (SST) during the middle Pleistocene and the Pleistocene-Pliocene transition in the Alboran Sea (westernmost Mediterranean), close to the Atlantic connection. The results reveal that the present-day positive correlation between the two variables (r = 0.649) is maintained even with a higher coefficient (r = 0.783) in the middle Pleistocene but falls slightly (r = 0.517) in the Pleistocene-Pliocene transition due mainly to a dispersal of the temperatures for the samples bearing predominantly left-coiling Neogloboquadrina. The temperature used as a reference for the coiling change resulted 5-6 °C above its North Atlantic present-day reciprocal, but these thermal differences could be caused by: i) a slight overestimate (1–2 °C) due to the lumping of all neogloboquadrinids into a single variable when SST are estimated; ii) only the warmer range of temperatures for the left-coiling populations would be represented in the samples; and iii) a remarkable warming inside the westernmost Mediterranean during the summer stage mixing cold and warm assemblages in bottom sediments. In addition, these results in combination with those derived from the isotopic analyses (δ18O) in G. bulloides tests, suggest that during the Pliocene-Pleistocene transition two different populations of left-coiling Neogloboquadrina could have existed with different environmental requirements: one, derived from late Miocene-Pliocene (i.e., left-coiling N. acostaensis group), and another being the ancestor of the modern N. pachyderma (left-coiling). Similarity analyses were achieved in order to locate the position of the core-tops with the assemblages most analogous to those of the fossil samples containing left-coiling Neogloboquadrina. The results reinforce the idea that the presence of these forms in the Mediterranean during the intervals studied would be related mainly to the input of cold waters from the North Atlantic during glacial stages, although it could be secondarily favored by the establishment of upwelling conditions, as in the present-day North Alboran waters.  相似文献

《Harmful algae》2003,2(2):89-99
Harmful algal blooms (HABs) have posed a serious threat to the aquaculture and fisheries industries in recent years, especially in Asia. During 1998 there were several particularly serious blooms in the coastal waters of south China, which caused a serious damage to aquaculture. We report a massive dinoflagellate bloom near the mouth of Pearl River in November 1998 with analyses of data from both in situ sea water measurements and satellites. A multi-parameter environmental mapping system was used to obtain real-time measurements of water quality properties and wind data through the algal bloom area, which allow us to compare water measurements from inside and outside of the bloom areas. This bloom with high concentrations of algal cells was evident as a series of red colored parallel bands of surface water that were 100–300 m long and 10–30 m wide with a total area of about 20–30 km2 by visual. The algal density reached 3.8×107 cells l−1 and the surface chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration was high. The algal species has been identified as Gymnodinium cf. catenatum Graham. The water column in the bloom area was stratified, where the surface temperature was 24–25 °C, the salinity was 18–20%, and the northern wind was about 3–4 m s−1 in the bloom area. The SeaWiFS image has shown high Chl-a area coinciding with the bloom area. The sea surface temperature (SST) image of the Pearl River estuary combined with the in situ measurements indicated that the bloom occurred along a mixing front between cooler lower salinity river water and warmer higher saline South China Sea (SCS) water.  相似文献

Planktic and epibenthic foraminiferal δ13C records at Site PS62/015-3 (southwestern Greenland Sea) reveal a series of transient events of extreme 13C depletion down to − 6‰ during the period 90–40 ka. Scanning electron microscope studies of the ultrastructures of foraminiferal tests suggest that 13C depleted specimens are affected by some 10–20% overgrowth by authigenic calcite contributing to the light δ13C signal. Incremental-leaching experiments and census counts of pristine versus overgrowth-affected specimens show that the 13C depleted foraminiferal tests incorporate a primary δ13C signature most likely ranging from + 1‰ to − 1.7‰ and a post-depositional δ13C signature around − 17‰ to − 19.5‰. Extremely low values of productivity and organic carbon in Late Quaternary sediments along the east Greenland margin preclude organic matter as potential source of the isotopically light carbon. In contrast, thermal instability of clathrates and subsequent aerobic oxidation of (highly 12C enriched) methane in pore and ocean water provide a compelling mechanism to account for the negative δ13C excursions of both primary and post-depositional carbonates. Here, pore water methane may have led to a supersaturation of 13C depleted bicarbonate and precipitation of isotopically light authigenic calcite on and in foraminiferal tests, a feature that may serve as a tracer to former sites of clathrate destabilization.  相似文献

Physical size has been critical in the evolutionary success of the genus Homo over the past 2.4 million-years. An acceleration in the expansion of savannah grasslands in Africa from 1.6 Ma to 1.2 Ma witnessed concomitant increases in physical stature (150–170 cm), weight (50–70 kg), and brain size (750–900 cm3). With the onset of 100,000 year Middle Pleistocene glacial cycles (“ice ages”) some 780,000 years ago, large-bodied Homo groups had reached modern size and had successfully dispersed from equatorial Africa, Central, and Southeast Asia to high-latitude localities in Atlantic Europe and North East Asia. While there is support for incursions of multiple Homo lineages to West Asia and Continental Europe at this time, data does not favour a persistence of Homo erectus beyond ~400,000 years ago in Africa, west and Central Asia, and Europe. Novel Middle Pleistocene Homo forms (780,000–400,000 years) may not have been substantially taller (150–170 cm) than earlier Homo (1.6 Ma–800,000 years), yet brain size exceeded 1000 cm3 and body mass approached 80 kg in some males. Later Pleistocene Homo (400,000–138,000 years) were ‘massive’ in their height (160–190 cm) and mass (70–90 kg) and consistently exceed recent humans. Relative brain size exceeds earlier Homo, yet is substantially lower than in final glacial H. sapiens and Homo neanderthalensis. A final leap in absolute and relative brain size in Homo (300,000–138,000 years) occurred independent of any observed increase in body mass and implies a different selective mediator to that operating on brain size increases observed in earlier Homo.  相似文献

Benthic dinoflagellates Ostreopsis spp. are known as producers of palytoxin and its analogs, resulting occasionally in human health problems worldwide. Although distribution of Ostreopsis spp. along the Thai coasts has been reported, little is known about their growth characteristics. To discuss the bloom dynamics of Ostreopsis spp. in Thailand, first we tested four kinds of media to optimize growth conditions and then clarified the effects of temperature, salinity and temperature–salinity interaction on the growth of strains of the O. cf. ovata Thailand subclade, O. cf. ovata South China Sea subclade, Ostreopsis sp. 6 and Ostreopsis sp. 7. We showed that the f/2 medium was a suitable medium which gave the highest cell yields for all the strains tested. The strains of the O. cf. ovata Thailand subclade, O. cf. ovata South China Sea subclade and Ostreopsis sp. 6 grew in the temperature range 20–32.5 °C, whereas the strain of Ostreopsis sp. 7 grew in 20–30 °C. The semi-optimal temperature ranges (≧80% of the maximal growth rate) for the former three strains were 22.7–27.4 °C, 27.9–30.8 °C and 23.5–26.4 °C, respectively, whereas that of the latter strain was 23–27.2 °C. The optimal temperature for the O. cf. ovata South China Sea subclade was 30 °C, whereas for the others it was 25 °C. All the Ostreopsis strains tested could grow in a salinity range of 20–40. The semi-optimal salinities for the O. cf. ovata Thailand subclade, O. cf. ovata South China Sea subclade Ostreopsis sp. 6 and Ostreopsis sp. 7 were 28.7–35, 23.8–30.8, 29.8–36 and 28–36, respectively. The optimal salinities for the O. cf. ovata Thailand subclade and O. cf. ovata South China Sea subclade were 30 and 25, respectively, whereas for Ostreopsis sp. 6 and Ostreopsis sp. 7 it was 35. In this study, our results suggested that the optimal and tolerable temperature–salinity conditions differ among the Thai Ostreopsis species/clades/subclades. Tolerances of the O. cf. ovata Thailand subclade, O. cf. ovata South China Sea subclade and Ostreopsis sp. 6 to the high temperature of 32.5 °C may allow these organisms to be distributed in the tropical areas, where the water temperature often reaches >30 °C.  相似文献

The last 220 ka of the MD03-2705 (18° 05.81′ N–21° 09.19′ W) sedimentary sequence, retrieved off the Cape Verde islands, was investigated using a multiproxy approach. Planktonic foraminifera assemblage analyses, coupled with isotopic measurements (δ18O) from benthic (Planulina wuellerstorfi) and planktonic (Globigerinoides ruber) foraminifera monospecific samples were conducted along the topmost 11 m of the sequence. High resolution X-ray fluorescence measurements (0.5 cm resolution), giving access to major element ratio, have completed the geochemical analyses along the core. Seasonal and annual past sea surface temperatures (SST) were quantitatively reconstructed. Local sea-surface salinity (SSS) changes were then estimated by coupling SST with planktonic δ18O data. Our data provide a set of both oceanic and continental markers of environmental changes along the north-western African margin. The major changes detected in our record are discussed in the light of the regional paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic history of the last 220 ka. Coupled oceanographic and atmospheric processes portray the climatic evolution of the area, and show strong links among the regional oceanography (water mass advection), the upwelling dynamics and the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) migration. An increased upwelling activity (or influence of upwelling filaments) is noted at the end of the two last glacial periods, probably in response to a more southerly position of the ITCZ. Higher SSS are recorded over the area during arid intervals and were tentatively interpreted as signing a southward shift of the Cape Verde Frontal Zone. A detailed coupling between dust advection and SSS values over the site of study was noted during MIS6.5.  相似文献

Populations of Noctiluca scintillans (hereafter Noctiluca) were compared from two regions: the northeastern-central Black Sea and the northern Adriatic Sea. In both seas samples were collected in near-shore waters 2–3 times per month during 2004–2012. For analysis of feeding activities and seasonal dynamics additional cruise data on the open waters of the Black Sea were used. Comparison between the two populations shows similarity in size structure with two classes 401–500 μm and 501–600 μm being the most numerous. Seasonal changes in cell abundance in both seas demonstrated a regular annual maximum with the peak period of high abundances in May–June with additional sporadic peaks in other seasons. In spring the average number of food vacuoles in the cell (1.78) and the proportion of feeding cells in populations (79%) in the Adriatic Sea were similar to those in the Black Sea (1.58 and 76%). In September–October, these parameters were lower both in the Adriatic Sea (0.69 and 49%) and in the Black Sea (1.46 and 65%) demonstrating that Noctiluca was better provided with food in spring. Among biotic parameters (wet phytoplankton biomass, chlorophyll biomass and zooplankton species) only the concentration of the eggs of Calanus euxinus was significantly positively correlated with abundance of Noctiluca. The possible effect of a high concentration of copepod eggs on the growth of Noctiluca in the peak period is discussed. An obvious negative relationship was observed between Noctiluca cell numbers in the peak period and wind velocity in both seas. The most significant negative correlation was observed between the number of windy hours per month (velocity more than 5–6 m s−1) and cell concentrations in the Black Sea (r = −0.92) and in the northern Adriatic Sea (r = −0.67). On this basis, a new hypothesis has been proposed and discussed: in connection with features of the food behavior of Noctiluca, its outbursts during the peak period are controlled by the wind. An evident positive relationship was observed between the number of Noctiluca in the peak period and its quantity in the preceding months in both seas. Thus, we suggest that abundance data during early spring and weather forecasts (winds) may be used for medium-term prediction of Noctiluca outbursts and red tides.  相似文献

The study of Quaternary sediments covering the last 550 kyr from the borehole GDEC-4-2, East-Corsica basin, was performed through the study of benthic meiofaunal assemblages (ostracoda and benthic foraminifera) whose distribution responds to climate changes, and glacial–interglacial variability in particular. The interglacial ostracod group is mainly composed of the Argilloecia acuminata, Cytheropteron alatum, Henryhowella sp., Polycope sp. and Cytherella sp., which indicate an enhanced surface productivity and possibly high bottom water temperature during these warm intervals. Benthic foraminifera, such as Hoeglundina elegans, Sigmoilopsis schlumbergeri, Bigenerina nodosaria and Hyalinea balthica are predominant during interglacial periods and also show an increasing surface productivity associated to warm intervals. Increase in surface productivity would contribute to an enhanced export of organic matter to sea floor at the GDEC-4-2 site during interglacial periods. The bottom temperature drop coupled with the important sedimentary inputs (associated to a significant quantity of refractory organic matter) during glacial periods was highlighted by the predominance of ostracoda, such as Paradoxostoma sp., Cytheropteron testudo, Bathycythere vanstraateni, Macrocypris sp., Echinocythereis echinata and benthic foraminifera as Bolivina spathulata, Bulimina costata, and Bulimina marginata. The distribution of some benthic foraminifera species describing a turnover system allowed the characterization of the last three climate cycles (MIS 8–9, MIS 6–7, MIS 1–5) probably marked by changes of bottom water paleoceanographic conditions in terms of temperature, salinity, bottom current intensity and surface productivity. The cyclic variations of the allochthonous group recorded over the last 550 kyr suggest a major role played by the eustatic factor, with the latter possibly favouring down slope transport. The distribution of this group allowed thus establishing a link between shelf-basin sediment transfer and climate, with enhanced shelf-basin sediment transfer during glacial low stands.  相似文献

Based on the high-resolution Mg/Ca and oxygen isotope ratio (δ18O) of planktonic foraminifera Globigerinoides ruber, sea surface temperature (SST) and salinity (SSS) were reconstructed in Core PC-1 from the northern Okinawa Trough during the last 24 kyr. From the last glacial maximum to Holocene, SST varied from 20.2°C to 24.6°C. Millennial-scale climatic events of the SST during the last glacial, such as the Heinrich events, Bølling-Allerød warming, and Younger Dryas, have been identified, which are synchronous with the climate changes in the North Atlantic, suggesting a teleconnection between the northwestern Pacific and the North Atlantic. During the last 24 kyr, the SSS variation can be divided into three parts: (1) during 21–15.5 ka, there was a significantly low SSS; (2) during 15.5–11.7 ka, the SSS increased obviously; (3) since 11.7 ka, the SSS is relatively stable. In order to discuss the main factors influencing the SSS in the northern Okinawa Trough, the relative abundance of Pulleniatina obliquiloculata and the oxygen isotope difference between the northern and middle Okinawa Trough (Δδ18Osw) have been used to indicate the intensity of the Kuroshio Current and Changjiang freshwater discharge, respectively. The Δδ18Osw result shows that there is a large amount of Changjiang freshwater emptied into the northern Okinawa Trough during 18–15.5 ka, which is caused by the subtropical monsoon rain band lingering in the lower reaches of the Changjiang River drainage, supporting the Jet Transition Hypothesis. As the Kuroshio Current strengthened since 15.5 ka as indicated by the increased relative abundance of P. obliquiloculata, the variation of Kuroshio Current became the more important contribution to the SSS in the study region. The results of our study indicate that the key factor influencing the SSS in the northern Okinawa Trough is variable during the last 24 kyr.  相似文献
