The invasion of the green crab Carcinus maenas in the northeastern U.S. and its competition with the native blue crab Callinectes sapidus and other native crustaceans has been well-documented and researched. Various reasons for the invader’s success against native crabs have been examined (juvenile predation, food source flexibility, etc.), but another possibility is a difference in the learning ability of invasive versus native crab species. In this study, the learning ability of C. maenas and C. sapidus was tested by their increased speed in locating hidden food over successive days. The data suggest that C. maenas possesses a learning ability significantly greater than that of C. sapidus, which may partially contribute to its success.  相似文献

The ability of the hermit crabs Dardanus venosus and Pagurus pollicaris to recognize chemically their symbiotic sea anemone Calliactis tricolor and a common octopus predator, Octopus joubini, were studied. The crabs were tested for chemoreceptive responses using a Y-trough olfactometer, which prevented visual cues from being used. Choice tests showed that D. venosus could chemically detect Calliactis. If, however, D. venosus had a Calliactis on its shell at the time of the trial, it could not detect the test anemone. P. pollicaris (without a symbiotic anemone) did not locate the test anemone. Both species of crab avoided a water current carrying octopus chemical cues. Chemoreception may play an important role in the interaction of a hermit crab with its symbiotic anemone and an octopus predator.  相似文献

The lady crab (Ovalipes ocellatus) is one of the most common native species of swimming crab (Portunidae) of the Atlantic Coast of North America but most populations occur south of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. There is a disjunct population in Northumberland Strait (southern Gulf of St Lawrence), which was the focus of this study. Adult lady crabs were collected by trawling in water >4 m deep from May to October 1999 to 2005 to determine abundance, distribution, and diet. Lady crab occurred only in a small area (about 2,500 km2) in the central part of Northumberland Strait where bottom water temperature was >18°C during summer, and the substrate was mainly sand or sandy gravel. Male lady crab attained a maximum carapace width (CW) of 112 mm compared to 92 mm CW for females. The summer and autumn diet consisted mainly of infauna. The principal prey (each >5% of diet by weight) were: small bivalve molluscs (primarily Atlantic razor clam Siliqua costata and Macoma sp.; 43%), small rock crab (Cancer irroratus; 13%), polychaetes (11%), fish remains (9%), and small lady crab (9%). All stomachs collected during May (water temperature ≤10°C) were empty. There was little evidence of any difference in feeding intensity between 0700 h and 1900 h.  相似文献

The purple globe crab, Randallia ornata (Randall, 1839) (Decapoda: Leucosiidae) is a common crustacean found on sandy beaches from Northern California to Baja California, Mexico. An undescribed species of Carcinonemertes, which shares biological features with a partially described worm from Tasmania was recovered from R. ornata. The worm reaches 10 mm in length and secretes a sturdy tube with a distinctive spiral shape. The total prevalence of the worm on R. ornatawas 70% (85% for ovigerous female crabs, 67% for post-ovigerous female crabs, and 45% for male crabs). Intensities reached 32 worms per crab. Adult worms were found in crab egg masses, regressed adults were recovered from under the abdomen of post-ovigerous females, and encysted juveniles were found on the gill lamellae of non-ovigerous female crabs and occasionally from the gill lamellae of male crabs.  相似文献

Landings from the whelk fishery in the southwest Irish Sea rose from 63 t in 1990 to 6587 t in 1996 although landings declined to 2919 tonnes in 1998. Whelk are caught in pots baited with a combination of dogfish Scyliorhinus spp and brown crab Cancer pagurus. The input of bait crab is estimated at 7.2% of whelk landed. Most of the crab comes from southeast Ireland where some of it is a by-product of the claw fishery; some is targeted as bait crab, and this includes sub-size or recently moulted individuals. Fishing effort has been increasing on brown crab for human consumption also and there is concern about the sustainability of the crab fishery. Alternative bait trials examined a number of readily available fish species, some of them offals, whose attractiveness was evaluated by reference to crab and dogfish: whitefish (whiting and cod), pelagic species (mackerel and scad) and blue mussel. An artificial bait ration which included some crab meat, but 60% less than its natural equivalent, proved as effective as natural bait crab. A bait which consisted of a single species was less successful than two species fished together and some of the combinations (notably of whitefish) performed very effectively. Pelagic species performed poorly. The trade in brown crab for human consumption will always produce some form of discards which should be used; extending its use in an artificial bait is desirable.  相似文献

A fungal infection occurred in the eggs and larvae of mangrove crab (Scylla serrata) in seed production in Bali, Indonesia. The causative fungus was classified as a member of the genusLagenidium (Oomycetes, Lagenidiales). After comparison of its biological and physiological characteristics with those ofL. callinectes ATCC 24973, a known parasite of various crustaceans, was concluded that the isolate is a new species ofLagenidium, L. thermophilum, because of its rapid and thermotolerant growth and unique discharge process. Fungal growth was observed on PYG agar containing 0–5.0% (w/v) NaCl and 0–2.5% (w/v) KCI. Similar pathogenicity toward the zoeae of swimming crab (Portunus trituberculatus) was demonstrated.  相似文献

The subtropical grapsid crab Percnon gibbesi (H. Milne Edwards, 1853) is one of the most recent alien decapods found in the Mediterranean, where it was discovered at Linosa (Pelagie Islands, Sicily Strait) in summer 1999. At present, the invasion of this species has been recorded in several other insular localities. We studied the feeding habits of the crab in an attempt to understand its success in the Mediterranean. The morphological characteristics of the chela, the feeding adaptations of the gastric mill and the analysis of stomach contents indicate that P. gibbesi is a strictly herbivorous species, a characteristic not shared with any other large-sized infralittoral Mediterranean crab.  相似文献

The paper discusses the first record of the association between the medusa Lychnoriza lucerna Haeckel, 1880 and the decapod Libinia spinosa Milne-Edwards, 1934 in neritic waters of Argentina. Our results allow us to conclude that the symbiotic relation between these two species is a common phenomenon. The crab L. spinosa is located in the subgenital pockets of L. lucerna such that one-half of its cephalothorax is exposed to the outside. The crabs feed at the expense of the medusa, ingesting some portion of its food. A few specimens of the crab have been found, mostly females; the only male was of a somewhat larger size.  相似文献

Specimens of Callinectes danae Smith 1869 were caught in northeastern Brazil (2178 males, 2031 females); of these, 24 males and 24 females were reared for 6 months. Water temperature (T) and salinity (S) showed a significant effect on the average ecdysis in wild crab (μ), with a model obtained that was: μ = exp(?0.12268T + 0.06148S)/(1 + exp(?0.12268T + 0.06148S)). Size at morphometric maturity was significantly larger for wild males and females (9.45 and 8.38 cm, respectively) than for reared individuals (8.95 and 7.93 cm). Females of sizes above CW50 (carapace width at maturation) showed an increased ecdysis activity, whereas males showed a decrease in ecdysis frequency in sizes over CW50. Five and six molts were observed for females and males, respectively, in both wild and reared crabs; the modal classes of the reared crabs were shifted to smaller sizes. In reared females the terminal‐pubertal molt occurred at 107 days of age and at 148 days, on average, in males. The intermolt period varied from 8 to 41 days and increased with age.  相似文献

During the BENTART 2006 Expedition, a specimen of the galatheid Munidopsis albatrossae (Crustacea, Decapoda) was sampled in the Bellingshausen Sea, at 1920 m depth on soft bottoms. This specimen represents the first record of the family for Antarctic waters. This and other recent records have substantially increased the known species richness of decapod crustaceans in Antarctic waters, which are discussed to reflect an increase of scientific effort, anthropogenic introductions, and/or new colonizations possibly associated to changes in environmental conditions.  相似文献

From Sea to Tree: Saga of a Land Crab   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
There are advantages to be gained when an animal abandons itsancestral home, the ocean, and advances across the littoralzone to the land. But along with the advantages come the inevitableproblems. How a land crab, Gecarcinus lateralis, has solvedits problems of life on land is the subject of this paper. Itsuse of dew as a source of moisture and of its burrow as a refugefrom predators and a hostile environment; its ability to collectmoisture from a damp substrate and conduct this moisture toits branchial chambers and its gills; its capacity to retainlarge amounts of water before ecdysis and to use this waterto stretch its new soft exoskeleton and attain its proper shapeafter ecdysis are only a few of the crab's special adaptationsfor terrestrial life. Its feeding and reproductive behaviorare equally adaptive, as is its propensity for tree-climbingwhen danger threatens–or at other times. During the pastseveral decades, much interesting and important research hasbeen done on G. lateralis, as well as on other land crabs–butmuch remains to be done. Land crabs are and will undoubtedlycontinue to be promising objects of scientific research.  相似文献

The exotic Asian shore crab, Hemigrapsus sanguineus, was recently introduced to the northeastern coast of North America and during the 1990's breeding populations were established throughout southern New England. In 1997–1998, ecological studies of several co-occurring brachyuran crabs were conducted and in native (Tanabe Bay, Japan) and invaded (Long Island Sound, USA) habitats of H. sanguineus. Standardized comparisons of H. sanguineus were made between the 2 habitats using data on crab sizes, utilization of space, and food habits. Results revealed that (1) the resource use of H. sanguineus was quite different from that of other resident species in its invaded habitat, and (2) there were no substantial changes in resource utilization by H. sanguineus after it became established in the invaded habitat (relative to native Tanabe Bay). Differing patterns of resource use by H. sanguineus and other crabs in the invaded habitat, the lack of restriction in resource use by H. sanguineus following its introduction, and the climatological and physical similarities between native and invaded regions likely contributed to the successful invasion of H. sanguineus into rocky intertidal habitats in southern New England.  相似文献

Heavy mortalities reaching 100% among larvae of the Japanese mitten crab,Eriocheir japonicus, occurred in Yamaguchi Prefectural Naikai Fisheries Experimental Station, Yamaguchi, Japan. Under the microscope, infected zoeal larvae were seen to be filled with numerous aseptate hyphae. An investigation was carried out to identify the pathogenic fungus and determine its pathogenicity under laboratory conditions. The pathogenic fungus was identified asAtkinsiella dubia. Its optimum growth temperature was 25°C, and it grew only at 2.5% NaCl. Under laboratory conditions, it showed pathogenicity to the larvae of the swimming crab,Portunus trituberculatus. This is the first report of mass mortality in crustaceans due toA. dubia infection in Japan.  相似文献

Hematodinium sp. is a parasitic dinoflagellate reported to cause disease and death in a variety of crustacean species including the blue crab (Callinectes sapidus). However, because of difficulties in the culture of Hematodinium sp. associated with blue crabs, little is known about its life cycle or mode of transmission. Here, we report the first detection of this organism outside of a metazoan host and provide evidence that this life stage can act as an infective agent. Observations of dinospores in crab hemolymph samples suggest that dinospores may be responsible for waterborne disease transmission. Additionally, we developed and validated a quantitative Real Time PCR assay for the detection of Hematodinium sp. inside and outside of a host organism that will be useful for future investigations of Hematodinium biology and Hematodinium sp.-infection etiology. Based on the observations of a free-living form of Hematodinium sp. and the association of this parasite with a widespread epizootic in blue crab populations, we propose that Hematodinium sp. be considered a Harmful Algal Bloom species.  相似文献

The infection effects of the parasitic digenean trematode on the body weight and reproductive success of the sand-bubbler crab were examined. Gynaecotyla squatarolae (Trematoda: Microphallidae) infects the body cavity of Scopimera globosa (Decapoda: Scopimeridae) and uses the crab as its second intermediate host. The parasites infected all reproductive crabs examined to varying degrees. Larger crabs of both sexes had more parasites than smaller ones, probably because body size reflects age, and older crabs had a longer period of exposure to infection. Males had more parasites than females, probably because of sexual difference in acting time on the surface. Ovigerous females stay in closed burrows and do not act on the surface during incubation, and so have less chance of infection than males. The quantity of infecting parasites did not explain variations in either body weight or reproductive success of individual crabs in a field experiment. The life history of this parasite, relative body size of the crabs, and cost and the possible benefit of manipulation for the parasite may explain these results.  相似文献

Three cDNAs encoding putative larval cuticle protein (LCP) were cloned from the mulberry longicorn beetle, Apriona germari. The three cDNA sequences were 309 bp, 396 bp and 408 bp in length, encoding 103, 132 and 136 amino acid residues, respectively. The predicted molecular masses for these LCPs were approximately 9.2 kDa (AgLCP9.2), 12.3 kDa (AgLCP12.3) and 12.6 kDa (AgLCP12.6). Pairwise identity among AgLCP9.2, AgLCP12.3 and AgLCP12.6 were relatively low. Each AgLCP contained a type-specific consensus sequence identifiable in other insect cuticle proteins. The deduced amino acid sequence of AgLCP9.2 is most similar to Bombyx mori LCP18 and those of AgLCP12.3 and AgLCP12.6 are both most similar to B. mori LCP17. Northern blot analysis revealed that the three AgLCPs showed epidermis-specific expression. The expression profile of AgLCPs after larval ecdysis revealed by Northern blot analysis that the high-level mRNA expression of AgLCPs was detected on the first day of larval ecdysis for AgLCP9.2, on the fifth day for AgLCP12.3 and from the first day of larval ecdysis to the fifth day after larval ecdysis for AgLCP12.6, demonstrating that AgLCP mRNAs are differentially expressed in epidermis after larval ecdysis.  相似文献

Summary The hawkmoth,Manduca sexta, under-goes periodic molts during its growth and metamorphosis. At the end of each molt, the old cuticle is shed by means of a hormonally-activated ecdysis behavior. The pharate adult, however, must not only shed its old cuticle but also dig itself out from its underground pupation chamber. To accomplish this, the adult performs a series of abdominal retractions and extensions; the extensions are coupled with movements of the wing bases. This ecdysis motor pattern is distinct from the slowly progressing, anteriorly-directed, abdominal peristalses expressed by ecdysing larvae and pupae. We have found that the ability to produce the larval-like ecdysis pattern is retained in the adult. Although this behavior is not normally expressed by the adult, larval-like ecdysis could be unmasked when descending neuronal inputs, originating in the pterothoracic ganglion, were removed from the unfused abdominal ganglia. Transformation of the adult-specific ecdysis pattern to the larval-like pattern was accomplished by transecting the connectives between the pterothorax and the abdomen, or by reversibly blocking neuronal activity with a cold-block. A comparative analysis of the ecdysis motor patterns expressed by larvae and by isolated adult abdomens indicates that the two motor patterns are indistinguishable, suggesting that the larval ecdysis motor pattern is retained through metamorphosis. We speculate that its underlying neural circuitry is conserved through development and later modulated to produce the novel ecdysis pattern expressed in the adult stage.Abbreviations A(n) nth abdominal segment - DL dorsal longitudinal - EH eclosion hormone - ISMs intersegmental muscles - MN motoneuron - SEG subesophageal ganglion - T1,T2,T3 prothoracic, mesothoracic, and metathoracic ganglion - TSMs tergosternal muscles - TX thorax  相似文献

An outbreak of the nemertean, Carcinonemertes epialti, was observed on Hemigrapsus oregonensis during October, 1982 at Campbell Cove, Bodega Harbor, California. Mean worm intensity (296 worms/crab) was the highest recorded for this nemertean egg predator on H. oregonensis. During the outbreak, male crabs were found to harbor more worms than both non-ovigerous and ovigerous females. Crab egg mortality was substantial; 83% of the ovigerous females experienced 75–100% brood mortality. The seasonal peak in worm abundance coincided with the seasonal low in crab reproduction at this locality. A method for estimating the impact of C. epialti on H. oregonensis natality was developed using crab size and fecundity, and worm prevalence and intensity. For a non-outbreak sampling period, a mean of 5.6% egg mortality was experienced by infested crabs for the period selected. Thus, brood mortality during the outbreak was much greater than that experienced at non-outbreak periods. Heavy fishing pressure on some commercially important crab species has been suggested as a possible factor inducing worm outbreaks and facilitating their continued persistence. These observations suggest that fisheries are not necessarily responsible for the outbreaks of nemerteans on commercially important crab species. However, fishing pressure may still be a sufficient condition to promote nemertean outbreaks.  相似文献

Large invasive predators like the king crab, Paralithodes camtschaticus, deserve particular attention due to their potential for catastrophic ecological impact on recipient communities. Conspicuous, epibenthic prey species, such as the slow growing commercial scallop Chlamys islandica, are particularly exposed to the risk of local extinction. A research program integrating experiments and field monitoring is attempting to predict and track the impact of invasive king crab on scallop beds and associated fauna along the north Norwegian coast. The claw gape of the crab shows no limitations in handling the flat-bodied scallop. However, the potential impact of the crab on scallop may depend on the availability of other calcified prey associated with scallop beds, such as the sea star, sea urchin, and blue mussel, all species recorded in the diet of P. camtschaticus. To address this issue, a laboratory experiment on foraging behaviour of P. camtschaticus was conducted. The experimental results show that all size classes of red king crab prefer scallops, but small juveniles and medium sized crabs demonstrate active selection for starfish (Asterias rubens) that equals or surpasses the electivity of the large crab. The selection of sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis) and blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) is slightly positive or neutral for the three crab size classes. These results suggest that scallop beds with a rich associated fauna are less vulnerable to red king crabs predation and possibly more resilient than beds with few associated species. Also, crab size distribution is likely relevant for invasion impact, with increasing abundance of small and medium sized crabs being detrimental for alternative calcified prey associated with scallop beds. Successive stages of crab invasion will see an acceleration of scallop mortality rates associated with (i) decreasing availability of alternative prey, due to protracted predation pressure intensified by recruitment of juvenile crabs, and (ii) increased number of large crabs. Estimates of crab density and intake rates suggest that the accelerated loss rates will eventually endanger scallop beds persistence.  相似文献
