Environmental variables such as pH critically affect the physiology and ecology of aquatic organisms. Our lack of information regarding indirect effects of acid precipitation requires investigation of acid stress and response to acid stress by species of freshwater communities. Damselfly nymphs Enallagma civile (Odonata: Coenagrionidae) are abundant aquatic predators and food items for other secondary consumers.We investigated the effects of low pH on mortality, survivorship, predation rate, respiration rate, and caloric content of nymphs of E. civile. We hypothesized that acid stress would increase mortality and decrease predation rate among surviving individuals. We hypothesized that respiration rate and caloric content as measures of physiological condition would decrease in acid-stress conditions.We cultured individual early-instar nymphs in the laboratory with a controlled diet of mosquito larvae. The nymphs were reared to final instar in pond water and artificially reconstituted soft water (RSW) adjusted to pH 3.5, 4.5, 5.5, and ambient conditions of the collection site.Predation rate was significantly lower in RSW than in pond water in treatments of equivalent H+ concentrations. This indicated stress from differences in dissolved solids in RSW compared with pond water. Acid conditions significantly affected predation rates in pond water, but only at pH 3.5 and only for the largest instar. Mortality increased and survivorship decreased at low pH. Early-instar mortality and survivorship were particularly susceptible to acid stress. Treatments of pH 4.5, 5.5 and ambient did not significantly alter respiration rate or caloric content. However, respiration rate and caloric content increased at pH 3.5.Damselfly nymphs tolerated pHs as low as 4.5 without significant changes (including predation rate). Densities of Corixidae (Hemiptera), larval Odonata, and large larval Trichoptera were estimated in the littoral zone of small lakes in an acid-stressed area near Sudbury, Ontario. Fish were present in some lakes and absent in others, and fishless lakes occurred across a wide range of pH. Corixidae were significantly more abundant in lakes without fish than in lakes with fish, and their numbers were not related to the pH of fishless lakes. Anisoptera (Odonata) larvae tended to be more numerous in benthic samples from fishless lakes than from lakes with fish, and their exuviae were significantly more abundant around fishless lakes. In most lakes, the assemblage was dominated by three species; Leucorrhinia glacialis, Libellula julia, and Cordulia shurtleffi. In lakes containing white sucker, Catostomus commersoni, Gomphus spp. were most numerous. In the most acid fishless lakes, L. julia was uncommon, and L. glacialis was extremely abundant. In fishless lakes, numbers of Anisoptera larvae and exuviae were negatively correlated with pH, though species richness was positively correlated with pH. Exuviae of Zygoptera (Odonata) were more abundant around fishless lakes, irrespective of pH. Larvae of Limnephilus (Trichoptera) were most abundant in non-acid fishless lakes, and absent at pH<5.2. Abundances of Banksiola (Trichoptera) were negatively correlated with the pH of fishless lakes.  相似文献

Very little is known about the incidence of egg parasitoids in odonates, perhaps because Odonata eggs are well protected by stems or leaves, sometimes below water. In Central Italy (Pontecorvo, Frosinone Province) two damselflies, Calopteryx haemorrhoidalis and Platycnemis pennipes, occur in high densities. In August 2007 we collected 30 stems of the aquatic plant Potamogeton sp. used as substrate for oviposition and incubated eggs in the laboratory. Most stems (24 for C. haemorrhoidalis and 23 for P. pennipes) contained Odonata eggs. Parasitoids emerged from 12 stems, with a mean parasitism of 2% for C. haemorrhoidalis and 6% for P. pennipes, and a maximum of 14% and 50%, respectively. Furthermore, we observed egg‐laying of 19 females of C. haemorrhoidalis and 11 of P. pennipes, and marked the stems where oviposition was observed. Clutches remained in the river for five days and were then collected and incubated. Parasitoids emerged from 11 of 30 stems, with an average parasitism of 8% for C. haemorrhoidalis and 3% for P. pennipes (maximums of 50% and 29%, respectively). All parasitoids belonged to the family Mymaridae, and were identified as Anagrus (Anagrus) obscurus Förster, 1861, sensu Soyka, 1955 . This is the first time that this species is described as an egg parasitoid of odonates, and that the egg parasitoid of C. haemorrhoidalis and P. pennipes is identified. Our data suggest that egg parasitism might be a significant selective factor for both odonates in the studied locality, affecting female oviposition behavior.  相似文献

Summary Bullfrog tadpoles (Rana catesbeiana) were pre-exposed (7d) to 5 different solutions which varied in ionic composition and pH. Unidirectional sodium influx was then measured over a range of sodium concentrations (50–2000 M) and at 2 pH's (4.0 and 5.8). Tadpoles pre-treated in either distilled water or pH 4.0 soft water exhibited higher sodium influx than animals pre-treated in pH 5.8 soft water. Pre-exposure to solutions high in calcium or sodium reduced sodium influx. Tadpoles pre-treated in pH 4.0 soft water exhibited an increasedV max for sodium transport, whileK m was unchanged relative to tadpoles pre-treated in pH 5.8 soft water. In contrast,K m was increased andV max was unchanged in tadpoles pre-exposed to high concentrations of calcium or sodium. Within each pre-exposure treatment, influx was inhibited in pH 4.0 test water relative to pH 5.8 test water. This study examined the effects of water hardness on the physiological responses associated with high pH exposure in multiple strains of diploid and triploid rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. To accomplish this, three wild strains and one domesticated strain of diploid and triploid O. mykiss were abruptly transferred from control soft water (City of Vancouver dechlorinated tap water; pH 6·7; [CaCO3] < 17·9 mg l?1) to control soft water (handling control), high pH soft water (pH 9·5; [CaCO3] < 17·9 mg l?1), or high pH hard water (pH 9·5; [CaCO3] = 320 mg l?1) followed by sampling at 24 h for physiological measurements. There was a significant effect of ploidy on loss of equilibrium (LOE) over the 24 h exposure, with only triploid O. mykiss losing equilibrium at high pH in both soft and hard water. Furthermore, exposure to pH 9·5 resulted in significant decreases in plasma sodium and chloride, and increases in plasma and brain ammonia with no differences between soft and hard water. There was no significant effect of strain on LOE, but there were significant differences between strains in brain ammonia and plasma cortisol. Overall, there were no clear protective effects of hardness on high pH exposure in these strains of O. mykiss.  相似文献

Fertilization of sea urchin eggs fails to occur at a pH lower than 6.5. Analytical studies on this problem were made with Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus, Anthocidaris crassispina and Pseudocentrotus depressus. If the spermatozoa have been pretreated with egg water, eggs can be fertilized even at pH 6.5 and 6.0. The acrosome reaction is inhibited at a pH lower than 6.5. Intact spermatozoa fail to adhere to the fixed eggs in acidified sea water, whereas egg-water-treated spermatozoa adhere even at pH 6.5 and 6.0. From these results we infer that the failure of fertilization at pH 6.5–6.0 is caused by non-occurrence of the acrosome reaction, and that fertilization reactions other than the acrosome reaction, such as the binding and fusion of the gametes, are not inhibited in this range of pH. At pH 5.5, the spermatozoa become inert and fertilization is inhibited or suppressed, even though egg-water-treated spermatozoa are employed.  相似文献

Abstract: There has been limited research examining the role that terrestrial habitat characteristics play in influencing persistence of amphibian populations. In this study we investigated the influence of a terrestrial habitat attribute on the distribution of the terrestrial egg‐laying toadlet, Pseudophryne bibronii. Eggs of this species are deposited in depressions, or under leaf litter, and develop to a stage where they can hatch to free swimming tadpoles when water covers breeding sites or embryos are washed into water. Because rainfall can be intermittent, eggs may sit for extended periods in terrestrial nests before sufficient rainfall initiates hatching. Appropriate egg‐laying sites must be chosen by both males and females to ensure embryos survive these periods. A study of 20 sites found that soil pH at sites where P. bibronii were recorded as present was significantly lower than pH at sites where P. bibronii were recorded as absent. To determine whether soil pH influenced the hatching success in P. bibronii, experiments were conducted in which batches of eggs were translocated to local areas with different soil pH. Survival rate of eggs was significantly influenced by relatively small changes in pH, with hatching success higher at lower pH. In a laboratory trial survival of eggs raised on sterilized soil was not affected by soil pH. Fungal infection of eggs was observed in the field and laboratory suggesting that hatching success might be affected via a complex interaction between soil pH, fungi and other soil biota. Choice trials using P. bibronii metamorphs indicated that individuals were capable of distinguishing between small differences in pH. Therefore, distribution of P. bibronii may be influenced by either differential mortality of embryos, or habitat choice by post metamorphic individuals, and further experiments are required to determine the relative importance of these factors.  相似文献

Egg deposition within plants is one of the most widely distributed and ancient behaviors in Odonata. The resulting clutch consists of eggs placed in peculiar pattern that can be a characteristic for certain groups of Odonata. Despite their importance for paleontological and evolutionary research, data on egg‐clutch positioning are missing or insufficient for most species. Here, patterning of egg clutches in Lestes virens was measured and described in detail for the first time. The female usually produces a linear row of single eggs directed at an angle rightward or leftward to the longitudinal axis of plant substrate. Less often eggs are arranged in egg‐sets consisting of up to 4 eggs. Apparently, the female insect follows the rigid behavior stereotypes during oviposition and is unable to easily switch to the alternate stereotypical behavior of single egg deposition or production of multiegg sets. Based on a literature review and original data, egg clutch patterning of European Lestidae is overlaid on preexisting phylogenies. The resulting evolutionary scenario of egg‐clutch patterning can be considered in the framework of egg‐laying behavior in Lestidae.  相似文献

Selection for the oviposition site represents the criterion for the behavioral process of habitat selection for the next generation. It is well known that in Odonata the most general cues are detected visually, but laboratory investigations on the coenagrionid Ischnura elegans showed through behavioral and electrophysiological assays that adults were attracted by olfactory cues emitted by prey and that males of the same species are attracted by female odor.The results of the present behavioral and electrophysiological investigations on I. elegans suggest the involvement of antennal olfactory sensilla in oviposition behavior. In particular, I. elegans females laid in the laboratory significantly more eggs in water from larval rearing aquaria than in distilled or tap water. Moreover, the lack of preference between rearing water and tap water with plankton suggests a role of volatiles related to conspecific and plankton presence in the oviposition site choice. I. elegans may rely on food odor for oviposition site selection, thus supporting the predictions of the “mother knows best” theory. These behavioral data are partially supported by electroantennographic responses. These findings confirm a possible role of olfaction in crucial aspects of Odonata biology.  相似文献

Summary Fathead minnows, Pimephales promelas, and yellow perch, Perca flavescens, were transferred from moderately soft Lake Superior water (hardness 45mg/l as CaCO3) to very soft diluted Lake Superior water (hardness 4.5mg/l). Sulfuric acid was added in some treatments by means of a multichannel diluter. In very soft water, chloride cells proliferated in the gills, especially in the epithelium of the secondary lamellae. When exposed to acid, chloride cells were damaged and less abundant in the secondary lamellae, and blood osmolality was reduced at pH 5.0 (x = 188 mOsm/kg, 9 days exposure; normal 280 mOsm/kg) for the minnows and pH 4.1 (x = 218 mOsm/kg, 58 days exposure; normal 329 mOsm/kg) for the perch. Certain chloride cells which form gland-like clusters in the primary lamellae of perch gills showed little damage even at pH 4.1. The present study supports the view that chloride cells proliferate in very soft fresh water to help maintain ionic balances, and that damage to these cells in acidified soft water may be related to diminished ionoregulatory capacity. The greater acid tolerance of chloride cells of, and the higher blood osmolality maintained by, perch could help to explain the greater tolerance of this species to low pH. In some cases, a species' ability to acclimate to very soft water and acidified soft water may depend upon the number, distribution, and physiology of its chloride cells.  相似文献

Predatory insects that depend upon particular prey animals are commonly regulated by the prey animal’s abundance. Nymphs of the giant water bug Kirkaldyia (=Lethocerus) deyrolli (Heteroptera: Belostomatidae) are predators regarded as specialists in feeding on tadpoles. We studied the ontogenetic diet shift of aquatic nymphs by quantifying instar abundance and by analyzing captured prey and prey relative abundance during the period of rice irrigation in three localities. We also evaluated the contribution of major prey items (tadpoles, frogs, and Odonata nymphs) on specific growth rates of each nymphal stage in a rearing experiment. First to third-instar nymphs of K. deyrolli fed mainly on tadpoles, regardless of differences in prey availability. Nymphs of subsequent fourth and fifth instar stages shifted from tadpoles to other prey animals within each rice field. A rearing experiment demonstrated that giant water bug nymphs provided with tadpoles had greater specific growth rates at all nymphal stages, except for the final stage, than nymphs fed other prey (frogs and Odonata nymphs). The emergence of young K. deyrolli nymphs seemed to coincide with the period during which tadpoles became abundant in the rice fields. Consumption of tadpoles seems important to allow the nymph to complete its larval development in an unstable temporary habitat. An erratum to this article can be found at  相似文献

Summary Net sodium flux (J net), sodium influx (J in), and sodium efflux (J out) were measured in two sunfish,Enneacanthus obesus (acid-tolerant) andLepomis gibbosus (less acid-tolerant), during 24 h exposure to soft water of pH's 4.0 and 3.5.E. obesus exhibited a mild transitory disturbance at both pH's caused by inhibitedJ in and slightly stimulatedJ out. Body and plasma ion concentrations ofE. obesus were measured weekly during exposures for 5 weeks to acidified artificial soft water (ASW). Body sodium concentration declined 30% during 2 weeks exposure to pH 3.5 but no further during the next three weeks. Exposure to pH 4.0 had no effect on body sodium concentration during the entire 5 weeks. Plasma sodium concentration declined 15% over a 3 week period at pH 3.5; there was no further change in the next two weeks. Plasma potassium concentrations, which were measured after 4 and 5 weeks at pH's 5.8 and 3.5 in ASW, were not significantly different. In a separate two week long experiment, plasma sodium concentration ofE. obesus in ASW was correlated with pH between pH's 3.5 and 7.5. This effect was mainly due to increases above pretreatment levels at pH 4.5 and above. Increased ambient sodium and calcium concentrations had no effect on body sodium concentration ofE. obesus at pH 5.8, but mitigated the effects of exposure to pH 3.5. Increased calcium concentrations up to 25 M at pH 3.5 increased body sodium concentration, but higher concentrations had no additional effect. Body potassium concentration and body water concentration ofE. obesus were linearly related to body sodium concentration under a wide variety of external conditions. This suggests the presence of a mechanism by whichE. obesus regulates plasma sodium levels and body fluid compartments in response to sodium loss. In contrast toE. obesus, L. gibbosus showed larger sodium losses at low pH resulting from greater acceleration ofJ out; those exposed at pH 3.5 died in less than 12 h.L. gibbosus also had reduced body and plasma sodium concentrations at pH 4.5 and below; those at pH 4.0 were the lowest. Body potassium concentration ofL. gibbosus was reduced in those fish exposed to pH 4.0 and below, but body water was increased. The photosynthetic activities of three planktonic desmid species (Staurastrum brachiatum, Staurodesmus cuspidatus var. curvatus, and Staurastrum chaetoceras) were compared after adaptation to medium enriched with either a 20 mM Na+-phosphate (P) or HEPES buffer. Incubations up to 2 d were carried out at pH 6 or 8 under normal air or air enriched with 5 % CO2. Gross maximum photosynthetic rate (P max) and growth rate were decreased in both S. brachiatum and Std. cuspidatus at higher pH when using the HEPES buffer and this effect was independent of CO2 concentration, indicating that pH had an inhibitory effect on photosynthesis and growth in these species. The P-buffer at pH 8 caused a large decrease in P max and quantum yield for charge separation in photosystem 2 (PS2), compared to HEPES-buffered algae. This effect was very large in both S. brachiatum and Std. cuspidatus, two species characteristic of soft water lakes, but also significant in S. chaetoceras, a species dominant in eutrophic, hard water lakes. The decreased P max in P-buffer could not be related to a significant increase in cellular P content known to be responsible for inhibition in isolated chloroplasts. Experiments at pH 6 and 8 showed that two conditions, high pH and high Na+ concentration, both contributed to the decreased P max and quantum yield in the desmids. Effects of a P-buffer were less pronounced by using K+-P buffer. The use of P-buffer at pH 8 possibly resulted in high irradiance stress in all species, indicated by damage in the PS2 core complex. In the soft water species pH 8 resulted in increased non-photochemical quenching together with a high de-epoxidation state of the xanthophyll cycle pigments.  相似文献

1. It is increasingly realised that aquatic and terrestrial systems are closely linked. We investigated stable isotope variations in Odonata species, putative prey and basal resources of aquatic and terrestrial systems of northern Mongolia during summer. 2. In permanent ponds, δ13C values of Odonata larvae were distinctly lower than those of putative prey, suggesting that body tissue comprised largely of carbon originating from isotopically light carbon sources. Presumably, prey consumed during autumn and winter when carbon is internally recycled and/or methanotrophic bacteria form an important basal resource of the food web. In contrast, in a temporary pond, δ13C values of Odonata larvae were similar to those of putative prey, indicating that their body carbon originated mainly from prey species present. 3. Changes in δ15N and δ13C values between larvae and adults were species specific and reflected differential replacement of the larval isotopic signature by the terrestrial diet of adult Odonata. The replacement was more pronounced in Odonata species of permanent ponds than in those of the temporary pond, where larvae hatched later in the year. Replacement of larval carbon varied between tissues, with wings representing the larval isotopic signature whereas thoracic muscles and eggs reflected the δ15N and δ13C values of the terrestrial diet of adults. 4. The results suggest that because of their long larval development, Odonata species of permanent ponds carry the larval signature, which is partly replaced during their terrestrial life. Terrestrial prey forms the basis for egg production and thus the next generation of aquatic larvae. In temporary ponds, in contrast, Odonata species rely on prey from a single season, engage in a prolonged aquatic phase and hatch later, leaving less time to acquire terrestrial prey resources for offspring production. Stable isotope analysis provided important insights into the food webs of the waterbodies and their relationship to the terrestrial system.  相似文献

The species richness and composition of fish assemblages were examined in lentic soft waters in The Netherlands. The selected bodies of water reflected a large variation in geomorphological and limnological factors. In total, 24 fish species were encountered in Dutch soft waters. During 1983–1984 Esox lucius, Perca fluviatilis, Rutilus rutilus, Scardinius erythrophthalmus, Tinca tinca and Umbra pygmaea were quite common. In slightly acid and alkaline waters (pH≥5) Rutilus rutilus, Scardinius erythrophthalmus, Perca fluviatilis, Ictalurus nebulosus and Cyprinus carpio accounted for about 90% of the total number of specimens in the catches. Strongly acid waters (pH < 5) generally were fishless. If fish were present in these waters, however, the catches mainly consisted of Umbra pygmaea. Only in a few strongly acid systems were other species collected. The lowest pH at which certain fish species occurred varied from 3.1 to 7.0. In particular, Umbra pygmaea was extremely acid-tolerant. The percentage of waters which harboured fish as well as the average number offish species per water decreased steeply between pH 6 and 4. The sampled waters showed remarkable differences in their fish assemblages. With hierarchical classification, six groups of waters could be distinquished with respect to their fish fauna. The site groups are defined and characterized physico-chemically and their fish assemblages described. Multivariate analysis showed that the structure of fish communities is strongly related to the pH, the alkalinity, trophic level and the ionic composition of the water. Comparison of historical and recent data on the occurrence of fish strongly indicated that in many sampling sites fish species or even entire fish assemblages had disappeared. Ordination of available data also illustrated recent changes in community structure. At least 67% of the nowadays extremely acid waters formerly harboured fish populations. The impoverishment of fish communities or the total loss of fish were primarily caused by cultural acidification. Limited nutrient enrichment of soft waters only resulted in minor alterations of fish assemblages.  相似文献

The anostracan Branchipodopsis genus is widespread throughout southern Africa and is the second most speciose anostracan taxon in this sub-continent. Branchipodopsis species are particularly dominant in small short-lived and clear rock pools, to the vagaries of which they are extremely well adapted. Such rock pools were studied in the Drakensberg region, in the eastern Free State and in south-eastern Botswana. Common features of Branchipodopsis-inhabited rock pools are the transparency of the water and the very low conductivity values (generally below 50μScm?1, often less than 10μScm?1). These shallow (usually less than 50cm) water bodies with limited buffering capacity show major fluctuations in pH values (often between about pH 4 and 11), depending on the time of the day and the stage in the hydrocycle. Rock pools also closely follow ambient air temperatures with resulting fluctuations of values between 10 and 40°C. Depending on local climatic conditions, small rock pools are usually short-lived and have several wet/dry cycles during one rainy season. Branchipodopsis species are the record-holders in this race against time with maturation usually being reached within the first week after inundation. Broods of resting eggs are generally small (less than 80 eggs) but are produced almost daily. Often (in 30% of cases in south-eastern Botswana), erratic rainfall does not allow sufficient time for successful maturation and reproduction. As a safe-guarding mechanism in B. wolfi in south-eastern Botswana, only some of the eggs hatch on each occasion, depending on environmental conditions, thus extending the chances for successful recruitment. While short-range dispersal of floating eggs by overflows is common, long-range dispersal (e.g. by wind) seems to be rare and to be restricted to shallow pools with little vegetation. Limited effective dispersal may explain the high number of endemic species (e.g. four in the Drakensberg region) and the large morphological variation in some widespread species such as B. wolfi.  相似文献

The effect of pH, sucrose and ammonium sulphate concentrations on the production of nata-de-coco, a form of bacterial cellulose, by Acetobacter xylinum was studied. Comparisons for physical properties like thickness, wet weight, water-holding capacity (WHC), moisture content and hardness, a textural parameter were done on nata-de-coco grown in tender coconut water medium supplemented with varying concentrations of sucrose and ammonium sulphate at different pH values. The results were analysed by fitting a second-order polynomial regression equation. Response surface methodology was used to study the effect of the three variables. The study showed that A. xylinum could effectively use sucrose as the sole carbon source in coconut water medium and that cellulose production was more dependent on pH than either sucrose or ammonium sulphate concentrations. Maximum thickness of nata was obtained at pH 4.0 with 10% sucrose and 0.5% ammonium sulphate concentrations. These conditions also produced good quality nata-de-coco with a smooth surface and soft chewy texture. The study will enable efficient utilization of coconut water, a hitherto wasted byproduct of coconut industry and will also provide a new product dimension to the aggrieved coconut farmers who are not getting the right price for their product.  相似文献

Flexible-shelled eggs of the Chinese skink (Eumeces chinensis) were used to determine the routes of water exchange with the environment and the effects of water exchange on hatchling traits. Eggs were incubated under three different hydric conditions at 28 °C. One group (ground eggs) was half-buried in incubation substrate. The second group (upper eggs) rested on the ground eggs but did not contact the substrate directly, and the third group was placed on a plastic platform above the substrate. Ground and upper eggs increased in mass and hatched successfully, while all eggs resting on the plastic platform lost mass and died within a week. Hence, E. chinensis eggs cannot sustain water balance through exchange of water vapor in air alone, but can absorb water from the substrate and other eggs and develop well. Water gained by upper eggs was only 20% of that absorbed by ground eggs, but hatchlings from the two treatments did not differ in morphology or locomotor performance. Therefore, the degree of water exchange of E. chinesis eggs has little effect on embryonic development and hatchling traits. The insensitivity of the eggs to variations in water exchange may be an adaptation against extreme hydric conditions in a species that deposits its eggs close to the soil surface.Communicated by I.D. 1. Despite long‐standing ecotoxicological evidence that episodes of acidification in streams are important biologically, there is still uncertainty about their effects on invertebrate communities. We surveyed 20 streams in an acid sensitive Alpine area (Canton Ticino, Switzerland), where episodes are driven by snowmelt in spring and by rainstorms at other times of the year. Samples of water and macroinvertebrates were collected in pre‐event conditions (winter and summer) and during periods of high flow (spring and autumn). 2. Using pH, [Ca2+] and [Aln+], streams were clustered into six acid–base groups that were either well buffered (groups 4–6), soft‐water with stable pH (group 3), or poorly buffered with low pH at high flow (groups 1 and 2). 3. Severe episodes occurred during snowmelt, when the group 1 streams became acidic with pH down to 5.0 and [Aln+] up to 140 μg L?1. pH declined to 6.2 in streams of group 2, but remained > 6.6 in groups 3–6. 4. Detrended canonical correspondence analysis showed that the streams sensitive to episodes (groups 1 and 2) had different invertebrate assemblages from well‐buffered sites (groups 4 and 5) or soft‐water stable streams (group 3), with faunal differences largest following spring snowmelt. Empididae, Isoperla rivulorum, Rhithrogena spp. and Baetis spp. were scarce in streams sensitive to episodes (groups 1 and 2). By contrast, Amphinemura sulcicollis was scarcer in hard‐water streams (groups 4–6). Taxonomic richness was lower in the episodic streams of group 1 than in other streams. 5. Together, these results indicate clear biological differences between acid‐sensitive streams with similar low‐flow chemistry but contrasting episode chemistry. Severe episodes of acidification appear to affect macroinvertebrate assemblages in streams in the southern Swiss Alps.  相似文献

Water striders (Hemiptera: Gerridae) are predators found on the water surface that prey mainly on arthropods. The feeding on other organisms (dead vertebrates, fishes and tadpoles) is a rare event. To our knowledge, predation of frog eggs by water striders has not yet been reported. We observed that adult water striders, Gerris latiabdominis Miyamoto, 1958 (Hemiptera: Gerridae), preyed on the eggs of three frog species, Pelophylax nigromaculata Hallowell, 1861 (Anura: Ranidae), Rana japonica Boulenger, 1879 (Anura: Ranidae), and Rhacophorus schlegelii Günther, 1858 (Anura: Rhacophoridae). We found predation by the water striders affects the survival rate of frog eggs floating on the water surface. We suggest that this hunting event would occur in water bodies in which water striders and frogs coexist, especially the region where their phenology overlaps.  相似文献
