1.?To better predict effects of climate change and predation risk on prey animals and ecosystems, we need studies documenting not only latitudinal patterns in growth rate but also growth plasticity to temperature and predation risk and the underlying proximate mechanisms: behaviour (food intake) and digestive physiology (growth efficiency). The mechanistic underpinnings of predator-induced growth increases remain especially poorly understood. 2.?We reared larvae from replicated northern and southern populations of the damselfly Ischnura elegans in a common garden experiment manipulating temperature and predation risk and quantified growth rate, food intake and growth efficiency. 3.?The predator-induced and temperature-induced growth accelerations were the same at both latitudes, despite considerably faster growth rates in the southern populations. While the higher growth rates in the southern populations and the high rearing temperature were driven by both an increased food intake and a higher growth efficiency, the higher growth rates under predation risk were completely driven by a higher growth efficiency, despite a lowered food intake. 4.?The emerging pattern that higher growth rates associated with latitude, temperature and predation risk were all (partly or completely) mediated by a higher growth efficiency has two major implications. First, it indicates that energy allocation trade-offs and the associated physiological costs play a major role both in shaping large-scale geographic variation in growth rates and in shaping the extent and direction of growth rate plasticity. Secondly, it suggests that the efficiency of energy transfer in aquatic food chains, where damselfly larvae are important intermediate predators, will be higher in southern populations, at higher temperatures and under predation risk. This may eventually contribute to the lengthening of food chains under these conditions and highlights that the prey identity may determine the influence of predation risk on food chain length.  相似文献

A 30‐day growth trial was conducted to investigate the individual variations in feeding rate, growth rate, spontaneous activity, and their possible interrelationships in hybrid tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus × O. aureus) reared individually at feeding frequencies of one and two meals daily. Results show that the feeding rate in energy (FRe), specific growth rate in energy (SGRe), and food conversion efficiency (FCE) of fish fed twice a day were significantly higher than that of fish fed only once. However, no significant differences in distance or in time spent swimming were observed between the groups. SGRe was positively correlated with FRe in fish fed only once daily, and SGRe was positively correlated with food conversion efficiency in energy (FCEe) between the two groups. SGRe was only inversely correlated with the distance that fish swam when fed once daily. The results suggest that the individual growth differences of hybrid tilapia could be attributed mainly to variations in FRe, and that the energy costs of spontaneous activity play an important role in the differences at feeding frequency of one meal a day. However, at feeding frequencies of two meals a day, individual growth differences in fish may be caused by variations in FCEe, and energy costs of spontaneous activity have only marginal effects on the differences.  相似文献

研究了18~34℃6个不同恒温下中国对虾(Fenneropenaeus chinensis)的生长、饵料转化率及能量收支。结果表明,中国对虾的体重及能量特定生长率分别变动在1.22%~3.27%和1.33%~1.45%之间,在18~31℃温度范围内随温度升高而升高,34℃下则显著下降.对虾的摄食量及对饵料的消化率总体上随温度升高而升高,但在34℃下则有所降低;饵料重量转化率和能量转化率分别在28.99%~53.09%和15.70%~7.24%之间,总体上随温度升高而有所下降.根据拟合的多项式方程推算得到的中国对虾的最佳生长温度为29.7℃,生长能和呼吸能的变化主导着中国对虾的能量收支模式,随温度升高生长能占摄食能的比例逐渐降低,而呼吸能比例则逐渐升高。本研究表明,对虾在适宜温度下获得的较高生长率主要归因于较高的摄食量和食物消化率。  相似文献

Effect of ration and body size on the energy budget of juvenile white sturgeon   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11  
Growth and energy budget were measured for three sizes (2.4, 11.1 and 22.5 g) of juvenile white sturgeon Acipenser transmontanus held at 18.5° C and fed tubificid worms at different levels ranging from starvation to ad libitum . For each size-class, specific growth rate increased linearly with increasing ration, and conversion efficiency was highest at the maximum ration. Growth rate decreased with increasing fish size at the maximum ration, but increased with size at each restricted ration. Conversion efficiency increased with increasing ration for each size-class and was usually highest at the maximum ration. Faecal production accounted for 3.2–5.2% of food energy. The proportion of food energy lost in nitrogenous excretion decreased with increasing ration. With increases in ration, the allocation of metabolizable energy to metabolism decreased, while that to growth increased. Fish size had no significant effect on the allocation of metabolizable energy to metabolism or growth. At the maximum ration, on average 64.9% of metabolizable energy was spent on metabolism, and 35.1% on growth.  相似文献

The effects of water temperature and food level on absorption efficiency, rate of oxygen consumption, molting rate, reproductive condition, energy content, and total production have been studied in the stalked barnacle, Pollicipes polymerus Sowerby. Absorption efficiency measured gravimetrically was high (≈94%) and unaffected by water temperature or food level. Absorption efficiency measured using an ash-ratio method was substantially less than that determined gravimetrically. The rate of oxygen consumption increased in the high food treatments and decreased in the starved treatment after 40 days. Molting rate, energy content, and total production were highest in the high food treatments. Reproduction was inhibited at warm water temperatures. The greater influence of food level than water temperature on production is probably related to the thermal regime experienced by these animals in the field.  相似文献

The influence of food concentration on clearance rate, respiration, assimilation, and excretion at −1.3 °C was studied on individuals of the bivalve Hiatella arctica (L.) from Young Sound, NE Greenland. Clearance rate, assimilation efficiency, respiration, and excretion rates were determined over a range of food concentrations using the microalga Rhodomonas baltica as food source. Physiological rates were generally low but responded significantly to increased food levels. Clearance rates and assimilation efficiency were reduced at increased food levels, whereas respiration and excretion increased. Assimilation efficiency was generally high, which may be an adaptation to the low food concentration during most of the year in NE Greenland. Low filtration rates limited ingestion rates and resulted in a low maximum assimilation of 3 J h−1. Despite the low food intake, very low food concentrations were required for individual specimens to obtain a positive energy budget. Predicted growth based on rates of assimilation and respiration were compared to published estimates of annual growth in Young Sound. We estimate that 3 weeks of growth in the laboratory under optimal food conditions could match annual growth in situ. We interpret this as evidence that food limitation is the primary impediment to growth in this Arctic population.  相似文献

Group living can incur both benefits and costs, mediated by different mechanisms. In many gregarious caterpillars, collective use of a network of silk trails is thought to improve foraging. Grouping, i.e., close contact with conspecifics, has been postulated to have both positive (thermoregulation and predator defense) and negative (competition and pathogen transmission) effects. The present experiment distinguishes between silk produced by group members and grouping per se in their effects on growth and development of both early and late larval stadia of the forest tent caterpillar [Malacosoma disstria Hübner (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae)] in a laboratory context. For both developmental stadia tested, pre‐established silk trails decreased latency to food finding and hence increased food consumption and growth rate. For younger larvae, pre‐established silk also decreased investment in silk production. Grouping young caterpillars accelerated development at the expense of growth, possibly as a mechanism to avoid intraspecific competition in later larval stadia. In older caterpillars, grouping decreased meal duration, suggesting that competition can indeed occur towards the end of larval development, even in the presence of surplus food. This led to a decrease in growth without any effect on instar duration. The benefits of exogenous silk thus decreased during larval development, whereas the costs associated with crowding increased. Ontogenetic shifts in grouping are common in many taxa: the present study is among the first to provide empirical evidence for an adaptive explanation of observed ontogenetic changes in aggregative behavior.  相似文献

Summary Energy budgets of juvenile pike and perch (weighing approximately 3 g) were determined in experiments lasting up to 4 days, by simultaneously measuring oxygen consumption, food consumption, and growth of individual fish. Although the basic pattern of energy allocation was identical in the two species, perch subjected to constant light (PEL) showed faster growth, higher assimilation and conversion efficiency, and higher oxygen consumption than perch subjected to a short daylength regime (PED). The efficiency with which food energy was converted into body mass was 39±5% in PED but 49±4% in PEL. However, the “work coefficient” (increment of body mass/post-prandial increase of oxygen consumption: mg · μmol O inf2 sup−1 ) differed only insignificantly between the two groups of perch, indicating that the metabolic cost of growth was unaffected by the manipulation of experimental conditions. This identifies the higher assimilation efficiency, i.e. the increased flow of food energy into the tissues as being the cause of accelerated growth of perch under the constant-light regime. In both species the maximum feeding-induced metabolic rate was 4 times higher than the lowest preprandial rate. In perch (which were kept on low rations before the experiments) the post-prandial metabolic rate increased steadily from day to day during the 4-day experiments, so that on the last day the rate of oxygen consumption exceeded the rate on the first day by about 41%. This investigation provides further evidence that the allocation of metabolic energy in fish is based on a flexible strategy which responds sensitively to changes in both internal and external conditions.  相似文献

1. Experimental data on the maximum growth and food consumption of winter‐acclimatised Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) juveniles from three Norwegian rivers situated at 59 and 70°N were compared with predictions from published models of growth and food consumption of summer‐acclimatised fish from the same populations. 2. All winter‐acclimatised fish maintained positive growth and a substantial energy intake over the whole range of experimental temperature (1–6 °C). This contrasted with predictions from growth models based on summer acclimatised Atlantic salmon, where growth and energy intake ceased at approximately 5 °C. 3. Growth and food consumption varied significantly among populations. Winter‐acclimatised fish from a Northern population had a higher mass‐specific growth rate, higher energy intake and higher growth efficiency than southern populations, which is contrary to predictions from models developed using summer‐acclimatised salmon, where fish from the Northern population had the lowest growth efficiency. 4. The experiment provides evidence that thermal performance varies seasonally and suggests adaptation to the annual thermal regime.  相似文献

The effects of nutrition may have subtantial impact on insect evolution by shaping different components of phenotypes. The key to undestanding this evolutionary process is to know how nutritional condition affects additive and nonadditive components of the phenotype. However, this is poorly understood in outbreaking insects. We investigated the additive and nonadditive variation present in food utilization traits in spruce budworm individuals subjected to chronic nutritional stress. A total of 160 full‐sib families of spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana Clem.) were raised under laboratory conditions, feeding on 2 diets (high and low energy) during 3 generations. Variables tested were pupal mass, consumption rate (RCR), growth rate (RGR), approximate digestibility (AD), the efficiency of conversion of digested food (ECD) and the efficiency of conversion of ingested food (ECI). Our results show that all traits tested presented a high percentage of nonadditive effects that modulate phenotype expression. We found a significant impact of family × diet interaction on pupal mass, RGR and ECD. Furthermore, these traits exhibited the greatest heritability. There was no evidence of presence of maternal effects. The results revealed that food utilization traits may evolve through epigenetics effects, such as phenotypic plasticity. This information can be used by modellers to improve forecast of spruce budworm population dynamics.  相似文献

Three species of the fresh water carnivore hydra, H. littoralis, H. pseudoligactis, and C. viridissima present a graduation in size with the first species the largest and albino Chlorohydra the smallest. When presented with a daily overabundance of food (artemia), considerable variation in food intake and gross efficiency of growth (proportion of food energy consumed that is turned into new protoplasm or buds) existed among the species. The degree of association between size of species and food intake was highly significant. However, budding efficiency among the species was found to be independent of food intake (when the effects of species size were eliminated) and of species size (when the effects of food intake were removed). However, species with high (low) efficiencies have significantly higher (lower) reproductive rates. A lowering of the temperature from 25° to 15° C. increased the size of the species, increased food intake, but decreased reproductive rate. In all species except H. pseudoligactis a corresponding increase in the production of bud energy with no change in efficiency also occurred. On the other hand, lowering of the temperature for H. pseudoligactis significantly lowered reproductive efficiency but had no effect on the total calorific output of buds. This species, in constrast to the others, appears to have a compensatory ability to adjust its efficiency to maintain a high calorific output when temperature increases. It was also found that albino Chlorohydra have budding efficiencies of around 35 percent which are not influenced by changes in food intake or light. Normal green hydras, however, have efficiencies which range from 40 to 62 percent above their albino counterparts when fed once a day and once every two days in light respectively. It it concluded first, that the symbiotic algae in the gastrodermals cells of green hydra contribute quantitatively in the order of the above amounts to the growth process in this species, and second, that green hydras have the ablity to increase their growth efficiency when food intake is reduced thus reducing the drop in calorific but output that normally occurs in the albino (control) form.  相似文献

The effects of temperature and ration size on the growth rate and gross efficiency of food conversion of juvenile rainbow trout Salmo gairdneri were evaluated during 25-day seasonal experiments. Rations ranged from near-starvation to repletion levels. Test temperatures were 3 and 6°C higher than the controls which fluctuated dielly and seasonally. At rations near maintenance, elevated temperatures decreased trout growth. As the feeding rate increased the detrimental effect of temperature on growth was ameliorated. At repletion feeding levels, elevated temperature up to 17°C improved trout growth by increasing the maximum food consumption rate. With a temperature increase from 6.9 to 22.5°C maintenance rations increased from 2.2 to 7.5 % body weight per day. Gross efficiency was dependent upon ration level and temperature. As the food consumption rate increased, efficiency increased to a maximum, then generally declined at repletion levels. Elevated temperatures resulted in reduced efficiencies at low consumption rates but temperatures had little effect at high ration levels. A field study provided estimates of the food consumption relationships established in the laboratory, suggested any substantial increase of stream temperature without a concomitant increase of food abundance would result in decreased trout production.  相似文献

Net food conversion efficiency κ was estimated from growth experiments on saithe Pollachius virens and whiting Merlangius merlangus that were fed natural prey at a range of ration levels including satiation rations. The conversion efficiency, which specifies the net energy fraction of ingested energy C , was described appropriately by a simple power function of food consumption rate as κ  = 0·272 C 0·18 and κ  = 0·426 C 0·11 for saithe and whiting. This functional relationship was supported by the patterns of accretion of lipids and proteins in saithe. No significant effects of temperature and body size on κ was, however, demonstrated in this study except for the indirect influence using feeding levels (rations expressed relatively to satiation rations) in bioenergetics models.  相似文献

The little stint Calidris minuta is one of the smallest shorebird species breeding in the Arctic (weighing 4.3  g on hatching). Their chicks are small and have a high surface area-to-volume ratio. We determined prefledging growth, energy expenditure and time budgets for little stint chicks in northwestern Taimyr, Siberia. A modified power curve was introduced to model the relationship between daily energy expenditure and body mass. Total metabolisable energy, TME, over the 15-d prefledging period was 107% greater than the allometric prediction for a bird the size of a little stint. Their growth rate coefficient was 14% greater than the prediction for a bird their size. The growth of young chicks was reduced in cool weather, possibly due to a reduction in foraging time in order to be brooded and reduced food availability which impact foraging efficiency. We did not detect weather effects on energy expenditure of chicks, but lack of temperature variation during energy expenditure measurements may have prevented this. In sum, both growth rate coefficient and energy expenditure of little stint chicks were greater than predicted and this is similar to that observed in other arctic shorebird species.  相似文献

Influence of Lernaeocera branchialis, a hematophagous copepod, on the growth rate of Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua, was investigated in fish of various sizes. Initially, it appeared that growth, over a 16-mo period, was reduced when single or multiple infections were present. We then examined growth rate by comparing food consumption, weight gain, food conversion efficiency, and condition (k) factor over a 2-mo period and subsequently over a 4 wk in control and experimentally infected fish. Total body weight and length of each fish, controls and infected were determined before and after feeding known weights of food. Adults infected with young parasites consumed more food and gained more weight than controls, especially in the first month, but food conversion efficiency and k-factor were greater than those of controls after 2 mo, but food efficiency was still lower than in controls. In 2 groups of young infected fish, all values were consistently lower than those of uninfected fish of comparable size during the 2-mo period. Three additional trials on immature cod confirmed that infected fish consumed less food and exhibited less growth than infected controls. Our results suggest that only adult cod infected with immature parasites compensate for the infections by increasing food consumption, thus resulting in a transitory weight gain. Additionally, parasites that have completed their reproductive activities still produce subtle effects in the form of low food conversion efficiency in their hosts.  相似文献

Summary Effects of device attachment on parental activities and body mass change in instrumented birds and their mates, and on chick growth and survival, were studied in Adélie Penguins Pygoscelis adeliae in Lützow-Holm Bay, Antarclica. Penguins on which small devices were fitted with rubber band harnesses exhibited increased foraging trip duration, and decreased body mass, food delivery rate, chick growth and chick survival. Their mates did not increase food delivery rate. Those on which small or large devices were fitted with epoxy glue did not change foraging trip duration, body mass, or chick survival. However, large devices decreased chick growth. These effects were more obvious; among penguins fitted with devices later in the chick rearing period, and suggest that: 1) parents fitted with devices give a priority to maintenance of their own energy reserve over guarding and food delivery for chicks; and, 2) parents' decreasing energy reserves later in the breeding season might intensify the effects of devices.  相似文献

The transfer of energy and nutrients from plants to animals is a key process in all ecosystems. In lakes, inefficient transfer of primary producer derived energy can result in low animal growth rates, accumulation of nuisance phytoplankton blooms and dissipation of energy from the ecosystem. Most research on carbon transfer efficiency in pelagic food webs has focused on either food quantity or food quality, with the latter considered separately as either elemental stoichiometry or biochemical composition. The natural occurrence and magnitude of these types of growth limitations and their combined effects on Daphnia , a keystone grazer in pelagic freshwater ecosystems, are largely unknown. Our empirical models predict that the strength and nature of food quantity and quality limitation varies greatly with lake trophic state (total phosphorus, TP) and that Daphnia growth rates and thus energy and nutrient transfer efficiency are highest in lakes with intermediate trophic status (TP 10–25 μg l−1). We predict that food availability place the greatest constraint on Daphnia growth in nutrient poor lakes (TP≤4 μg l−1). Phosphorus limitation of Daphnia growth increased with decreasing TP, but the overall effect was never predicted to be the dominant constraining factor. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5ω3) limitation was predicted to occur in both nutrient poor and nutrient rich lakes and placed the primary constraint on food quality in the most productive lakes. Two contrasting EPA-models gave different results on the magnitude of EPA-limitation, implying that additional food quality factors decrease Daphnia growth at high TP. In conclusion, the model predicts that Daphnia growth should peak in mesotrophic lakes, food quantity will place the greatest constraint on growth in oligotrophic lakes and EPA will primarily limit growth in eutrophic lakes.  相似文献

The effects of temperature and diet on the specific growth rate and food consumption of 1-summer-old Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus were studied. Fish were reared singly in aquaria at six different constant temperatures (5, 9, 13, 16, 18 and 20°C). They were fed Neomysis integer or commercial pelleted food for 2 weeks and growth and food consumption were measured. In both experiments, growth rate increased to an optimum at 15°C. Growth rates were high in the range 13–18°C, with no significant ( P >0·05) differences between temperatures. No significant ( P> 0·05) differences in growth were found between fish at 9 and 20°C. There were no effects of diet on size-adjusted growth rates. The growth efficiency decreased with increasing temperature in both treatments, but the decrease was faster in the Neomysis treatment. Charr seemed to compensate for the high water content (79·5%) of Neomysis by having a higher food intake.  相似文献

The effects of water temperature and body weight on feeding, growth, and energy budget were inevitable in the yellow catfish Pelteobagrus fulvidraco (Richardson, 1846), an important fish cultivated in China. This study explores the interaction of water temperature and body weight on both energy utilization strategy and energy conversion efficiency to promote further healthy culture of yellow catfish. Fish with body weights of 6 g (Group S), 16 g (Group M) and 35 g (Group B) were reared in 15 circular glass steel cylinders 80 cm in diameter × 70 cm in height (180 L) at water temperatures of 21, 24, 27, 30 and 33°C (3 replicates for each temperature) for 42 days to investigate effects of water temperature and body weight on the feeding, growth, digestion and energy budget in yellow catfish. Results showed that the levels of dry matter, protein and energy in the body were significantly affected by water temperature (< .05). Feeding, growth, feed conversion efficiency, digestion and energy allocation parameters were significantly related to both water temperature and body weight (< .05). Yellow catfish had higher maximal food consumption (Cmax), food intake rate, specific growth rate, food conversion efficiency, appear digestibility coefficient, and growth energy allocation (G) at 24–30°C, and optimal growth at a water temperature of 27°C. Two‐factor analysis of variance revealed that there was reciprocation of both water temperature and body weight on the above parameters. At the optimal temperature of 27°C, the value of energy for growth (G) was the highest, and the value of energy for feces (F) produced was the lowest. Yellow catfish with various body weights had energy budget equations of 100 A = 63.70 R + 36.30 G in Group S, 100 A = 62.54 R + 37.46 G in Group M, and 100 A = 67.47 R + 32.53 G in Group B if the equations were described as percentage of the proportion of the assimilation energy. Therefore, the optimal temperature was 27°C according to its feeding, growth and digestion.  相似文献
