Milking under anesthesia in pregnant free-ranging Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) directly revealed lactation in gestation at Jigokudani Monkey Park, the Shiga Heights, Nagano Prefecture, Japan, from 12 to 14 February 1992. Multiparae secreted milk at 76–97 days of estimated fertilization age when the birth intervals to the next offspring were 2 years. The observation of sucking behavior from February 1991 to March 1992 indicated that concurrent suckling by these multiparae terminated approximately 70 days before the next parturition after the growth of fetuses had accelerated and the embryos survived the crisis of abortion. Thus, Japanese macaque mothers appear to hedge maternal investment with concurrent lactation against possible miscarriage. Two nulliparous pregnant females secreted milk 3 months before the first parturition although they had no suckers. The first preparation of lactation appears to require the duration of longer than 3 months in nulliparae although worked mammary glands appear to be able to resume within 1 month in multiparae. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

This paper reports a systematic pattern of homosexual incest avoidance among females in a captive group of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) culled from the Arashiyama-West troop known for its high rates of female homosexuality. The study group included three matrilines and two generations. Between eight and 11 females were sexually active over four consecutive mating seasons, and all engaged in both heterosexual and homosexual activity. While all females performed homosexual acts with almost all possible non-kin partners, they systematically avoided homosexual interactions with their mother, daughters, and sisters. This pattern could not be explained either in terms of kin not being simultaneously in estrus, kin avoiding affiliative interactions in general, or non-kin utilizing the tension-reducing effect of estrus to affiliate exclusively with each other. In contrast to homosexual females, heterosexual pairs of relatives (brother-sister, mother-son) were sometimes incestuous. Assuming that female homosexuality expresses the reproductive strategy of females unconstrained by male influence, the present results point to the strong tendency of females to avoid incest and suggest that males are primarily responsible for the reported exceptions to incest avoidance.  相似文献

In group-living primates, individuals often exchange grooming with not only kin but also non-kin. We investigated the effect of soliciting behaviors on grooming exchanges in a free-ranging Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata) group at Katsuyama. In this study, we used a focal animal sampling method, targeting 14 females. Data were collected for 15.75 ± 2.67 (mean ± SD) hours per focal female. We classified female–female pairs into three pair types: kin pairs, affiliated non-kin pairs, and unaffiliated non-kin pairs. Females received grooming more frequently when they solicited after grooming their partners than when they did not solicit in all pair types. In addition, females received grooming less frequently when they did not groom their unaffiliated non-kin partners before soliciting; prior grooming was not needed to receive grooming from kin or affiliated non-kin partners. The degree of grooming reciprocity did not differ according to the frequency with which females in kin or affiliated non-kin pairs solicited after grooming. On the other hand, grooming reciprocity between unaffiliated non-kin females was more balanced when they solicited frequently after grooming, as compared with when they did not. In conclusion, our study suggests that soliciting behaviors promote grooming exchanges in female Japanese macaques.  相似文献

Mother-infant relationships were studied during the infant's first year in free-ranging Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata). Three possible factors controlling the mother-infant relationships were examined using multivariate analysis. Parity was determined to exert the strongest influence on mother-infant relationships. Specifically, during month 1, multiparous mothers showed greater maternal suckling rejection than primiparous mothers, and primparae and multiparae differed in their responses to suckling behavior. During month 6, multiparous mothers prompted independence of their offspring more than primiparous mothers. By month 8, however, parity differences in maternal behavior were substantially reduced. Maternal rank was a less important factor, although during month 1, high-ranking mothers showed greater maternal restriction than low-ranking ones. In the present study, infant gender appeared to have no effect on mother-infant relationships. That most differences were due to parity indicates that mother-infant relations were largely determined by the mothers. This observation conflicts with the “learning-to-mother” hypothesis. Allo-mothering of neonates by nulliparae is rare among Japanese macaques. Primiparous mothers learned appropriate suckling care from handling their own infants.  相似文献

Suckling behavior of primiparae in free-ranging Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) was compared with that of multiparae at Jigokudani Monkey Park, the Shiga Heights, Nagano Prefecture, Japan, from April 1984 to June 1994. The estimated rates of milk secretion in a single preferred nipple among primiparae were lower than those among multiparae from birth to 5 months of age. Milk secretion capabilities of primiparous mothers, hence, appear to be inferior to those of multiparous mothers. In nutritive sucking, although Japanese macaque infants preferred one single nipple, nipple preferences in primiparae were weaker than those in multiparae. With supplementary two-nipple use during sucking, however, the infants of primiparae appear to overcome a suckling flaw of their primiparous mothers. After infants were 5 months of age and after a drop (from approximately 10% to approximately 5%) in the rates of milk secretion, however, milk secretion rates in a single preferred nipple among primiparae were similar to those in multiparae and the supplementary two-nipple use in primiparous mother-infant dyads disappeared. I investigated the effect of the density of louse eggs (Pedicinus obtusus andP. eurygaster) on grooming site preferences in Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata). Louse eggs were more often found on the outer side of the body (upper back, lower back, outer arms, and outer legs) than on the inner side of the body (chest, belly, inner arms, and inner legs). Japanese macaques were more likely to be groomed on the outer side than the inner side of the body by allogrooming and autogrooming. Such grooming site preferences correlated with the distribution of louse eggs but not with the areas of body parts. Thus, the ecology of lice might affect grooming behavior of Japanese macaques. Five hundred and fifty louse eggs were estimated to parasitize an adult female Japanese macaque. Considering the intrinsic rate of natural increase of lice, monkeys need to be groomed almost every day. This suggests that Japanese macaques need grooming partners and form social bonds with others for everyday grooming.  相似文献

This study analyzed long-term demographic data relative to a captive colony of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) in order to evaluate factors predicting increased probability of infant neonatal abandonment. Overall, 7.7% of liveborn infants were abandoned at birth. Probability of abandonment was significantly increased in primiparous and, to a lesser extent, low-ranking mothers. Primiparous mothers abandoned about 40% of their infants at birth. Mother age and infant sex had no independent effects on the probability of neonatal abandonment. Primiparous mothers that did not abandon their infants suffered increased infant mortality and showed longer interbirth intervals compared to same-age multiparous mothers. These results are partially consistent with adaptive hypotheses predicting maternal divestment under unfavorable conditions, and with proximate explanations linking abandonment to inexperience and stress.  相似文献

Male intertroop transfer among Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) often coincides with the mating season. However, no necessary connection exists between mating by newly arrived males and whether they join a troop—visitors often mate, and males that join troops may show little mating success. On the other hand, intertroop transfer often coincides with major events in the developmental and social life history of males, such as the attainment of sexual maturity and full adult body size or rise in dominance rank. Thus, intertroop transfer may reflect age-specific behavioral patterns in which males maintain a position in the age-rank structure of troops, where the rank acquired in a new troop is partially determined by age.  相似文献

In the present study, we seek to relate dominance style with group cohesion in a captive group of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata). Social data were gathered on approach rate, result, and direction, aggression rate and intensity, grooming rate and direction, and conciliatory tendency. Data were collected using focal animal sampling and instantaneous scan sampling. Reconciliation data were collected using ad libitum observations of aggression with ten-minute post-conflict and matched-control focal observations. Data were compared to prior studies on rhesus (M. mulatta) and stumptail macaques (M. arctoides) living in similar environments. Each species demonstrated the presence of a formalized dominance hierarchy based on the teeth-baring display. The Japanese macaque group showed a lower rate of approach with a higher proportion of negative outcomes than either of the other species. Rates of aggression and reconciliation were also lower in the study troop, suggesting a strict hierarchy while maintaining an optimal nearest-neighbor distance. Overall, this group of Japanese macaques was less sociable than other groups of the same species, perhaps due to a history of individual removals. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Intensive observations were made of a troop ofM. fuscata which was kept in a large outdoor corral at the Oregon Regional Primate Research Center during the summer and fall of 1967. The intent of the observations was to determine whether the troop's normal patterns of social behavior and social structure seemed to be affected by confinement in the corral. Substantial deviations were noted between the spatial structure of the Oregon troop and the central-peripheral structure typical of free-ranging troops in Japan. There was also some indication of heightened aggressiveness within the corral but other aspects of social behavior seemed unaltered.  相似文献

Data on the sexual maturation of a transported natural troop of Japanese macaques were collected during the 1973–74 and 1974–75 breeding seasons. Analysis of the data revealed that the sexual maturation of many monkeys was delayed one to two years. It is suggested that the delay of sexual maturation is related to a failure of the pubescent-aged monkeys to attain appropriate weight levels after transportation. Five hypotheses that related female rank and reproductive success were tested in an intact troop of free-ranging, provisioned, Japanese macaques. The hypotheses stated that high-ranking females (1) begin parturition earlier in life than low-ranking females; (2) produce more offspring than low-ranking females; (3) give birth during some optimal time during the birth season to a greater extent than low-ranking females; (4) experience less infant mortality than low-ranking females;and (5) more frequently produce male offspring, while low-ranking females more frequently produce female offspring. A statistical analysis of the data which included three birth seasons and 55 adult females and 34 pubescent females, all of known age, rank, and matrifocal membership in the Arashiyama B troop, revealed few significant results. An association was found between the rank of the matrifocal unit and the age of first birth. However, the relationship was the reverse of hypothesis 1, i.e., females of the lower-ranking matrifocal units began parturition earlier than females of higher-ranking matrifocal units. Therefore, in this troop of Japanese monkeys— where alternative feeding strategies existed— there was little association between female rank and reproductive success.  相似文献

This study deals with maturation and aging of the vertebrae in Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata fuscata) of known chronological age. The samples used were 103 skeletons of captive raised Japanese macaques varying in age from 6-23 years. Epiphyseal union between the vertebral body and the epiphyseal disk (epiphyseal ring, annular epiphysis) and degenerative changes of the vertebrae were macroscopically examined. It was revealed that vertebral epiphyseal union develops comparatively rapidly in the sacral and cervical vertebrae, moderately in the lumbar vertebrae, and slowly in the thoracic vertebrae. It was found that, as a central tendency, the vertebral epiphyseal union begins at about 6 years of age, progresses lineally in proportion to age, and completes at about 23 years of age. However, considerable variation in developmental states of union was observed among individuals of the same age. Concerning vertebral degenerative changes, few were observed among the present samples. Compared with the other primates with regard to the timing of vertebral maturation, shortening of duration of maturation was found among humans. Human vertebrae may have become an early-maturing organ in order to sustain the increased loading that is accompanied by the adoption of habitual erect posture and bipedal locomotion.  相似文献

This paper offers a comparison of the reproductive biology of the Japanese macaques of Arashiyama, Japan and the free-ranging rhesus macaques of Silver Springs, Florida, U.S.A. The data indicate that rhesus macaques of Silver Springs have a higher reproductive rate than the Japanese macaques of Arashiyama. The reproducive rate of the rhesus monkeys over three birth seasons is 82% and that for the Japanese macaque is 53%. The higher reproductive rate of rhesus monkeys is accomplished through an earlier onset of sexual maturation (4 and 5 years for the rhesus and 5 and 6 years for the Japanese monkeys) and a shorter interbirth interval (14.27±5.54 months for rhesus and 18.00±6.57 months for Japanese monkeys). It is suggested that, because of the relatively harsh winters experienced by Japanese macaques, the slower reproductive rate of the Japanese monkeys has been selected for in order to enable females to lengthen the time in which maternal care is extended to their offspring.  相似文献

Demographic data have been collected on the Arashiyama Japanese macaque population from 1954 until the present, through the fissioning of the original group into two parts in 1966, and through the translocation of one of the two groups to Texas in 1972. Population dynamics are reported for the Arashiyama West group in Texas during 1972 to 1979 and then compared to data from Japan. After a short period of adjustment for the translocated group, during which time natality rates were relatively low and mortality rates were relatively high, many aspects of population structure, birth rates, and survivorship showed trends similar to those observed in Japan. This suggests that both long-term homeostatic processes and shorter-term responses to environmental fluctuations are significant to the study of nonhuman primate demography.  相似文献
