The growth and morphogenesis of embryos of Aulocara elliotti (Thomas) at constant temperature are described in terms of 27 discrete morphological stages with four stages designating blastokinesis. The developmental variability of two series of embryos reared from a single wild population in two different years is compared. This study aimed to investigate the embryonic development characteristics and host mussel utilization of Acheilognathus rhombeus to determine its adaptations or host utilization for improving survival during winter in the wild; the study was conducted from August 2014 to May 2015. Spawning of A. rhombeus occurred between mid-September and early November, peaking between late September and early October of 2014 when the water temperature was 19–21°C. The embryos of A. rhombeus were first found in early October of 2014 and remained inside the host mussel for 7 months. Development retardation and diapause in embryonic stages (stages C and D) occurred before eye pigmentation and continued until late March of 2015. Subsequently, the embryos resumed development (stage E) when the water temperature increased to about 10 °C. The positions during the development of A. rhombeus embryos in the mussels were mainly present in the farthest suprabranchial cavity and not in the water tube. The embryos were frequently found in the two inner demibranches of the four gills of the mussels regardless of their sex. We assume that embryonic diapause and use of suprabranchial cavity and inner demibranches of the gills of the mussels by A. rhombeus might be the optimal adaptation to maintain high embryonic survival in low water temperature during winter and to avoid interspecific competition.  相似文献

Embryonic development times and the stage at which embryonic diapause occurs varied dramatically among 23 populations of the Melanoplus sanguinipes/ devastator species complex in California, USA. Grasshoppers were collected from a wide range of latitudes (32°57N to 41°20N) and altitudes (10m to 3031 m), spanning much of the variation in climatic conditions experienced by these insects in California. When reared in a common garden in the laboratory, total embryonic development times were positively correlated to the mean annual temperature of the habitat from which the grasshoppers were collected (varying from about 19 days to 32 days when reared at 27°C). These grasshoppers overwinter as diapausing eggs and the proportion of embryonic development completed prior to diapause was significantly higher in populations collected from cool habitats (>70%) than in populations collected from warm environments (<26%). The length of pre-diapause development time is determined by the stage of embryonic development at which diapause occurs, and varies considerably among populations of these grasshoppers; grasshoppers from warmer environments tend to diapause at very early stages of embryogenesis, while grasshoppers from cooler environments diapause at very late stages. The combined effect of variation in embryonic development times and variation in the stage at which diapause occurs results in a dramatic reduction in the time needed to hatch in the spring; populations from warm environments required up to 20 days (at 27°C) to hatch while populations from cool environments required as few as 5 days to complete embryonic development prior to hatching. Egg size also varied significantly among populations, but tended to be larger in populations with shorter embryonic development times. Significant family effects were observed for development time and stage of diapause, suggesting significant heritabilities for these traits, although maternal effects may also contribute to family level variation. We interpret these findings to support the hypothesis that embryonic development time and the stage of embryonic diapause have evolved as adaptations to prevailing season lengths in the study populations.  相似文献

The bruchid beetle, Bruchidius dorsalis Fahraeus (Coleoptera: Bruchidae), has a multivoltine life cycle and shows geographical variation of overwintering stages in Japan. Our previous study found that B. dorsalis enters larval diapause in the final instar under short photoperiods. In cooler areas, we observed that most individuals overwinter in the final larval stage in diapause, whereas beetles at different developmental stages (non‐diapausing young instars, diapausing instars, and adults) were overwintering in warmer areas. In this study, we investigated geographical variation in the photoperiodic response for induction of larval diapause at 20 °C (three populations) and 24 °C (two populations) to clarify the overwintering strategy of B. dorsalis. We observed that (1) diapause incidence at 20 °C changed sharply from ca. 100% to 0% with a change in photoperiod in all the populations, (2) critical photoperiod was longer at 20 °C in populations from cooler areas, and (3) critical photoperiod at 24 °C was shorter than at 20 °C and a fraction of the larvae did not enter diapause, even under short photoperiods. Overwintering stages estimated from these results were consistent with those actually observed in the field. This study indicates that the geographical variation of overwintering stages is likely to reflect adaptive diapause induction in each local environment.  相似文献

The use of captive rearing to promote recovery of endangered butterflies has substantially increased over the last decade. These programs have the potential to play a significant role in butterfly population recovery, but the effects of captive conditions are poorly understood and rarely are traits of captive individuals assessed relative to traits in their founding populations. To develop rearing protocols and investigate possible effects of captive conditions, we reared Puget blue butterflies (Icaricia icarioides blackmorei), a subspecies closely related to the endangered Fender’s blue (I. i. fenderi) which is limited to Oregon, USA. We reared individuals from two wild populations in Washington, USA to investigate two approaches for egg collection (collect eggs in the wild vs. collect eggs from adult females which were brought to a greenhouse for oviposition) and three diapause environments (in indoor facilities at two independent locations vs. outdoors in enclosures). Survival from egg to adult was similar across all captive groups which survived past diapause and was less than 10%. Captive reared individuals were lighter and had smaller wings and shorter body lengths than their founding populations for both sites. Based on our findings, we recommend that rearing programs compare characteristics of reared individuals to individuals from the founding population to quantify possible effects of captive conditions, diapause individuals in natural environments, and for programs with survival rates similar to rates in the wild, consider alternatives to augment declining populations and reintroduce historic ones.  相似文献

Embryo–environment interactions are of paramount importance during the development of all organisms, and impacts during this period can echo far into later stages of ontogeny. African annual fish of the genus Nothobranchius live in temporary pools and their eggs survive the dry season in the dry bottom substrate of the pools by entering a facultative developmental arrest termed diapause. Uniquely among animals, the embryos (encased in eggs) may enter diapause at three different developmental stages. Such a system allows for the potential to employ different regulation mechanisms for each diapause. We sampled multiple Nothobranchius embryo banks across the progressing season, species, and populations. We present important baseline field data and examine the role of environmental regulation in the embryonic development of this unique system. We describe the course of embryo development in the wild and find it to be very different from the typical development under laboratory conditions. Development across the embryo banks was synchronized within and across the sampled populations with all embryos entering diapause I during the rainy season and diapause II during the dry season. Asynchrony occurred at transient phases of the habitat, during the process of habitat desiccation, and at the end of the dry season. Our findings reveal the significance of environmental conditions in the serial character of the annual fish diapauses.  相似文献

Adult emergence of univoltine temperate insect species and its synchronization with specific host phenological stages is mainly regulated by obligatory pupal diapause. Although a few studies have investigated the factors affecting diapause intensity, little attention has been paid to the physiological alterations and metabolic regulation that take place during diapause. Here, we describe differences in diapause between a highland and a coastal Greek population of the European cherry fruit fly Rhagoletis cerasi, a major pest of sweet and sour cherries in many European countries. Pupae of both populations were exposed to the environmental conditions prevailing in the two areas and diapause termination was observed under laboratory conditions. The regulation of energetic metabolites during the long pupae stage was examined under both field and laboratory conditions. Differences in diapause intensity revealed that the two populations have adapted to the local geographical and climatic conditions and have different requirements for low temperatures to terminate diapause. The coastal population undergoes a shorter diapause and adults emerge more rapidly, especially in the highland area. The highland population failed to terminate diapause (<40% adult emergence) in the coastal area. Both populations draw on their major energetic reserves (lipids and protein) similarly during diapause. Nevertheless, regulation of carbohydrate and glycogen reserves seems to vary between the populations: major peaks of these stored nutrients occur on different dates in the two populations, suggesting a differential regulation. Differences in diapause intensity imply a genetic differentiation between the two populations. The importance of our findings in understanding the physiological patterns during obligatory diapause of a univoltine insect species, as well as the practical implications for the development of specific phenological models for the European cherry fruit fly are discussed.  相似文献

Diapausing larvae of Eurytoma amygdali Enderlein (Hymenoptera, Eurytomidae) were collected in early August and late September. They were subjected to various photoperiod and temperature regimens for up to 20 weeks, then kept at L16:D8 and 19 °C for another 14 to 26 weeks for diapause to be terminated and pupation to take place. Photoperiod did not affect diapause completion. It was confirmed that the two morphologically distinct diapause stages have different temperature requirements for their completion. The first diapause stage was completed synchronously at temperatures between 16 and 19 °C. A higher temperature of 26 °C delayed diapause development. The second stage required lower temperatures between 4 and 10 °C. Spontaneous termination of diapause was observed at constant 19 °C. When applied to the first diapause stage for 20 weeks, low temperatures made the larvae refractory to subsequent intermediate temperatures. The first stage was thus maintained until a higher temperature of 26 °C made the larvae regain their ability to respond to the intermediate temperatures and complete this stage. Larvae grown in Retsou almonds had a higher diapause intensity than larvae grown in Truoito almonds. The results suggest that, in nature, the high temperatures of late summer and early autumn are likely to maintain the first diapause stage. Subsequently, the less warm temperatures of autumn allow the completion of the first stage by late autumn, and the low temperatures of late autumn and of winter allow the completion of the second diapause stage by mid winter.  相似文献

Female two‐spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae are grown under different photoperiods and the photoperiodic regulation of diapause is examined. The photoperiodic response curve for diapause induction was of the long day–short day type, with critical day lengths (CDLs) of 2 and 12.5 h; diapause was induced between these CDLs. The preimaginal period is significantly longer in diapausing females than in non‐diapausing females; moreover, a significant positive correlation is detected between diapause incidence and deutonymphal period. Diapause incidence is high when long‐night photoperiods are applied against a background of continuous darkness in the stages including the deutonymph; this stage appears to be the most sensitive to photoperiod. These observations suggest that diapause‐inducing conditions inhibit nymphal development, particularly in the deutonymphal stage when photoperiodic time measurement for determination of reproduction or diapause is carried out.  相似文献

Summary Two species of ground crickets, Allonemobius fasciatus (from Corvallis, 44.3 N) and A. socius (from Gainesville, 30.3 N), and their hybrids were compared for nymphal development, wing form, and embryonic diapause. A. fasciatus matured more rapidly at a short photoperiod than at a long photoperiod and also than A. socius which showed no developmental response to photoperiod. The proportion of long-winged forms varied with nymphal photoperiod greatly in A. fasciatus but slightly in A. socius. A. fasciatus laid only diapause eggs, while A. socius responded to a long parental photoperiod and a high incubation temperature by averting diapause. A. fasciatus showed temperature-dependent shift of the diapause stage butA. socius entered diapause only at the early stage. These differences are related to their voltinism and distribution.Reciprocal crosses between the two species produced viable hybrids. In development rate, female hybrids were intermediate between their parents while male hybrids were closer to their mothers, suggesting that the development rate is controlled primarily by the X chromosome. Overdominance occurred in wing form; reciprocal crosses produced either higher or lower proportions of long-winged forms than their parents. Diapause of F1 hybrid embryos was determined only by the female parent and the paternal effect appeared in F2 embryos.  相似文献

Abstract The bruchid beetle Bruchidius dorsalis Fahraeus (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) has been known to undergo larval diapause during the final instar under short photoperiods ( Kurota & Shimada, 2001 ). This species has a multivoltine life cycle and the overwintering stages show a geographical variation across Japan ( Kurota & Shimada, 2002 ). In cooler areas, overwintering occurs during the final instar, whereas in warmer climates overwintering can occur during several developmental stages: non‐diapausing young instars, diapausing instars, and adults. In this study, we investigated the adult reproductive diapause in three populations from different geographical regions to clarify the role of geographical variation on overwintering strategies. We found that: (1) B. dorsalis entered reproductive diapause in addition to larval diapause under short photoperiods, (2) diapause propensity was higher and the critical photoperiod was longer in populations from cooler regions, and (3) the sensitive photoperiod range was the first 5 days after emergence. Predictions of the overwintering stage, derived from critical photoperiods, were consistent with actual overwintering stages observed in each population. The geographical variation in diapause induction is likely to reflect the adaptive overwintering strategy in each local environment.  相似文献

The life cycle of the zygopteran odonate Lestes viridis in two seasonal streams in the Sierra Morena Mountains is inferred from size-frequency analyses of handnet samples of larvae and records of presence and reproductive activity of adults during three consecutive years. The egg stage (duration 5–6 months) overwinters, larval development is brief (6–8 weeks) and adults undergo a protracted, prereproductive, summer diapause (up to 3 months) before mating and ovipositing in late September, about one week after the first appreciable fall of rain, but before surface water reappears in the streams after having been absent for about four months during the hot, dry summer. Comparison between this life cycle and those of more northerly populations reveals a latitude-correlated cline in phenology resembling that found in some other northern hemisphere odonates that, like L. viridis, maintain an obligatorily univoltine life cycle at different latitudes.  相似文献

Field and laboratory studies were carried out between 1995 and 1997 on four populations of Diaptomus leptopus found in seasonally temporary, occasionally temporary, and a permanent environment to assess the relative importance of photoperiod and temperature regimes versus other proximate local cues in inducing diapause egg production. Patterns of diapausing and subitaneous egg production were determined by observation of individual females bearing clutches that were produced in the field. A laboratory common-garden experiment was performed to assess the effects of four different regimes of temperature and photoperiod on the induction of diapause. Patterns of diapausing egg production differed among ponds: diapause occurred early in the seasonally temporary environment and occurred rarely in the permanent environment. In the common-garden experiment, populations exhibited substantial changes in the onset of diapause when compared to patterns found under field conditions. These results provide indirect evidence that the different populations respond to available cues of environmental change in different ways in nature, or that environmental cues vary among habitats.  相似文献

Recent work has demonstrated that hydrogen peroxide functions as a signaling molecule controlling different essential processes in plants and mammals, which can be produced by superoxide dismutase (SOD) and xanthine oxidase (XO) and decomposed by catalase (CAT), respectively. Progeny diapause of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, is induced by diapause hormone (DH) and the expression of DH gene in the maternal generation has been determined. In order to investigate the relationship between the metabolism of H2O2 and the expression of DH gene, level of H2O2 and activities of SOD, XO and CAT between univoltine and polyvoltine strains, which can produce diapause and non-diapause eggs, respectively, at embryonic and pupal stages were measured. Our results showed that there were significant differences in the metabolism of hydrogen peroxide between two strains and between embryonic and pupal stages. Compared to polyvoltine strain, level of hydrogen peroxide in univoltine strain was significantly higher from stage 19 to stage 21 but lower from stage 24 to stage 29 and the whole pupal stage (Fig. 1). Variations of hydrogen peroxide indicated that hydrogen peroxide may be involved in the active release of DH and the progeny diapause decision by DH rather than the expression of DH gene.  相似文献

Seasonal adaptations of Chrysopa dorsalis Burmeister were studied in Belgorod Province of Russia (50°N, 36°E). It was found that in the forest-steppe zone two generations may be produced, but from 76 to 100% of the prepupae of the first generation entered diapause, about 40% of them having an obligate diapause. In the rest of the population, seasonal development was controlled by photoperiod and temperature. The critical day length was about 17 h at 20°C. Some prepupae were found to require two or three years to complete the diapause. This prolonged diapause seems to be a permanent element of the life cycle of the studied species. The proportion of the prepupae that remain in diapause after the first winter positively correlated with the percentage of diapausing prepupae of the first generation in the previous season (r = 0.8). The offspring from eggs laid by females simultaneously collected under the natural conditions emerged in successive years, and the tendency to enter a long-term diapause was not inherited. The rate of the larvae development and the prepupae weight were not different in individuals which had one-year-long and prolonged diapause. However, the weight loss due to dehydration and respiration during the first winter was slightly lower in the prepupae with the prolonged diapause. The expression of the prolonged diapause was independent of the photoperiod during the diapause induction, but it was increased at a high temperature (28°C). Probably, the prolonged diapause increases polymorphism of local Ch. dorsalis populations, ensuring their survival under unpredictable conditions.  相似文献

Petrobia harti (Ewing) displays a facultative summer diapause in the egg stage. An adult female will lay only either diapause or non-diapause eggs throughout her life. In the laboratory, diapause eggs are laid by females which develop on detachedOxalis articulata leaves under long-day photoperiods and a relatively low temperature of 19±1°C.Diapause occurs in a stage of advanced embryonic development, in which the embryo appears U-shaped when observed from the egg's ventral side. Embryonic development ceased at this stage, and no further growth occurred when the eggs were kept under a relative humidity of about 70% in various photoperiod and temperature conditions. However, when the eggs were hydrated by placing them on wet cotton wool, development in some embryos (apparently in those which had completed their diapause development) proceeded beyond the U-stage at a rate similar to that in non-diapause embryos and the eggs hatched.Under LD 168 and 19±1°C or 26±1°C, the later from oviposition the period of egg hydration started, the higher the percentage of diapause termination. Under LD 168 and 26±1°C, diapause termination occurred mostly during the first week of hydration, while at 19±1°C mostly during the second and third week.At 26±1°C, in eggs hydrated 15 days but not 30 days from oviposition, the percentage of diapause termination was higher under a long-day than under a short-day photoperiod.Under LD 168, when the eggs were hydrated continuously from oviposition or starting 15, 30 and 45 days from it, the percentage of diapause termination was higher at 26±1°C than at 19±1°C.The percentage of diapause-laying adult females and the intensity of egg diapause were higher when the pre-imaginal mites grew at LD 1212 and 19±1°C, than when they grew at LD 168 and 26±1°C. This maternal effect on egg diapause intensity was expressed when the eggs were maintained at LD 1212 and 19±1°C but not at LD 168 and 26±1°C.  相似文献

The partial trivoltinism and overwintering of Kytorhinus sharpianus Bridwell (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) was studied in the Kanto district, Japan. The later in the summer eggs were laid by the first-generation adults, the higher was the incidence of larval diapause in the second generation. The incidence of diapause also fluctuated between years, influencing the abundance of third-generation larvae. A relatively large proportion of third-generation larvae did not attain the diapause stage by the beginning of winter. The diapause development of larvae in diapause was completed by mid-January. Immature larvae of the third generation also overwintered and emerged as adults in the spring.  相似文献

In temperate areas, population dynamics of the invasive Asian tiger mosquito Aedes albopictus are strongly affected by winter. The work we present here analyzes the adaptive synchronization of the diapause process in the wintry generation of A. albopictus, where the egg stage is exposed to adverse winter conditions. The seasonal pattern of egg laying activity of a French Mediterranean population of the Asian tiger mosquito was monitored weekly for 2 years with ovitraps. The field diapause incidence and the critical photoperiod (CPP, i.e. the maternal day length inducing diapause in 50% of the eggs), were determined by hatching experiments on the collected eggs. The period of diapause termination was estimated by a field survey of the first hatchings for both years. The CPP is equal to 13.5 hours of light and occurs in the field on the 25th of August. Thus, it is on September 11th, 17 days after the CPP, that 50% of the eggs are in a prediapause stage in the field. The egg diapause rate increases rapidly during September, whereas the mean number of eggs laid decreases sharply after mid-September. Surprisingly, after having reached a peak of 95% at the end of September, from mid-October the diapause incidence declined and stayed below 50%. Indeed, both years the diapause initiates before the rapid decrease of the environmental temperature. This leaves a sufficient period of time to the complete development of one generation of A. albopictus with effective induction of diapause in the laid eggs. The very first larvae hatched were sampled both years in the first half of March. With 20 to 26 weeks in the egg stage and about 7 weeks in the larval stages, the first annual generation spends a long time in immature stages. On a practical point of view, this long development time represents a wide window for eggs and larvae control in early spring.  相似文献

To analyse the survival, pathway and time of embryo development in the annual fish Austrolebias nigrofasciatus eggs were monitored in four liquid media and two damp media under experimental conditions for 130 days until their development was complete. Eggs kept in the same breeding water from oviposition remained in diapause I (DI) during all experiments. In constrast, up to the stage prior to entering diapause II (DII), the other media had no influence on development. Embryos at this stage (DII), however, show longer development time when treated in medium with water and powdered coconut shell so that about 80% of embryos remained in DII at 100 days. In contrast, all other treatments had a significantly lower proportion of embryos remaining in DII. When treated with Yamamoto's solution in humid media, embryos showed the fastest development. The first fully developed embryos (DIII) were seen at 27 days after oviposition. It took an average of 46–58 days for 50% of eggs in each treatment to reach DIII. Compared with other studies, survival in all incubation media was high at between 70 and 98%. Taken together, it can be concluded that all incubation media were found to be viable for maintaining embryos. Altering developmental trajectories through the manipulation of diapauses in different media makes this species a potential model organism for laboratory studies.  相似文献
