Asian white radish processed foods are commonly consumed in Japan and Korea and are increasingly available in many Western countries. The major flavor constituent of Asian white radish, 4-methylthio-3-trans-butenyl isothiocyanate (MTBITC), was extracted as an oil and added in varying concentrations to an unflavored cracker biscuit. Untrained taste panels of Japanese, Korean and Australian nationals were presented with treated biscuits and their concentration preference for MTBITC determined. The taste preferences (degree of liking) of the Japanese and Koreans differed markedly with the Japanese preferring biscuits containing 110 μmole MTBITC/100 g while the Koreans preferred < 50 μmole/100 g (the lowest concentration tested). The difference is attributed to the Korean use of Asian white radish in highly spiced foods compared to the Japanese use without the addition of strongly flavored ingredients. The Australians also preferred <50 μmole/100 g but this was probably due to unfamiliarity with eating white radish.  相似文献

Ephoron shigae is distributed in Far East Russia, Korea and Japan, where it inhabits rivers, streams and lakes. Although this mayfly is a geographically parthenogenetic species, unisex populations have been observed only in Japan. We aimed to answer the following three questions: (i) whether there is a unisex population of E. shigae in Korea; (ii) whether migration and gene flow exists between E. shigae populations in Korea and Japan; and (3) whether E. shigae populations are fragmented in Korea because of mountains running to the north and south. We observed 20 populations across Korea and investigated the sex ratio in 12 populations. Our results showed that all the populations were bisex, and we believe that there is no unisex population of E. shigae in Korea. In addition, we examined the genetic structure of E. shigae in Korea by using the COI gene. The results showed that the Korean populations were clearly divergent from the Japanese populations; the level of genetic distance between the Korean and Japanese populations was interspecific rather than intraspecific. Therefore, parthenogenetic populations of E. shigae probably belong to unisex populations that originated in Japan, while the individuals would have not migrated to Korea. The Korean populations did not show clear fragmentation by geographic barrier, although this mayfly with extremely short adult stage (up to 2 h) could be a comparatively strong disperser across Korea.  相似文献

A nonsense mutation at codon 95 (R95X) in the C9 gene is responsible for most Japanese C9 deficiency (C9D) cases, with a carrier frequency of 6.7%. Upon analysis of microsatellite markers and newly identified dinucleotide repeat number polymorphisms in the 3' flanking region of the C9 gene, a founder effect was demonstrated for the R95X mutation of the C9 gene in Japanese. Screening for the R95X mutation in Korean and Chinese individuals showed that the R95X carrier frequencies in Koreans and Chinese were 2.0% and 1.0%, respectively. Although homozygotes for the R95X mutation were not found in Korea or China, the shared haplotype of the dinucleotide repeat number polymorphisms appeared to be associated with the R95X mutation in the heterozygotes in Korea and China. The founder effect found in East Asians (Japanese, Koreans and Chinese) but not in Caucasians, as well as the haplotype sharing in only a small chromosomal interval, suggested that the R95X mutation of C9 gene was ancient and had occurred after the divergence of East Asians and Caucasians, and before migration of the Yayoi people to Japan. Since the mortality of meningococcal infections in complement-deficient patients is lower than that in normal individuals, a founder effect and a selective advantage in isolation might be the main reasons for the high frequency of the R95X mutation in Japan.  相似文献

Mesial-distal and buccal-lingual crown measurements were made on male and female samples of recent Japanese teeth from three locations, Fukuoka, Kyoto, and Tokyo, and for Hokkaido Ainu and Koreans. Similar data were collected for prehistoric Middle-to-Late Jomon Japanese and from Yayoi specimens representing the first agriculturalists to appear in Japan. From a tooth-by-tooth comparison of cross-sectional areas, it was shown that the modern Japanese samples did not differ from one part of Japan to another. Korean tooth size also is not significantly different from Japanese, while Ainu have the smallest teeth recorded in Asia. The Yayoi who brought rice to Japan about 300 B.C. came in with teeth that were the same size as Chinese Neolithic teeth. They encountered a resident Jomon population whose teeth were 10% smaller. From tooth size measures alone, it is most economical to suggest that, if the rates of reduction observed elsewhere in the world applied in Japan, the recent Ainu would best be regarded as the direct descendants of the Jomon, while the modern Japanese are the results of in situ reduction from the incoming Yayoi. Other aspects of craniofacial morphology suggest that some Jomon was incorporated by the Yayoi. The modern Japanese, then, while predominantly derived from the Yayoi, would include a Jomon component.  相似文献

Neoheterobothrium hirame is a large, blood-feeding gill-worm infecting the highly prized olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus in Japan. There is strong evidence that this worm is the primary cause of anaemia, a common and serious condition causing losses among both wild and cultured olive flounders. N. hirame was first detected in Japanese waters less than a decade ago, and its population then proliferated and spread throughout most of Japan, except Hokkaido. In neighbouring Korea, olive flounder is the most important species of cultured marine fish, and production currently exceeds that in Japan. However, until now, there have been no reports of any monogeneans or anaemia among olive flounders in Korea. Our survey conducted in 2000 of 100 cultured individuals from 4 provinces revealed 2 immature specimens of N. hirame: 1 from a land-based pond-culture system in southern Cheju Island (off the SW coast of Korea) and the other from a floating net cage near Yosu (in the mid-S part of the peninsula). The geographic range of this pathogen may have been enlarged as a result of introduction(s) of infected broodstock from Japan, but this seems unlikely. (The raising of this species in hatcheries developed in Korea in 1985, 7 years before the earliest detection of the worm in Japan.) Low numbers of flounders were also clearly anaemic. This, and the current rarity of N. hirame in Korean farms, appears to favour the hypothesis of a more recent, natural dispersal of the worm, during migrations of infected flounder across the narrow and shallow Tsushima and Korea Straits. Regardless of route of entry, we expect this pathogen will have an impact on Korean flounder fisheries equally serious to that being experienced in Japan.  相似文献

The bluegill sunfish, Lepomis macrochirus, is a notorious exotic species in many freshwater ecosystems, currently expanding its distribution worldwide. In 1960, a small group of bluegills captured in the Mississippi River at Guttenberg in Iowa were imported to Japan as a gift from the mayor of Chicago to the Japanese government. The offspring of these fish were released into the wild in Japan and also in Korea. Over 40 years after this first introduction, L. macrochirus now occupies all the freshwater ecosystems of both countries. We compared invading populations of L. macrochirus in Japan and Korea with native populations in the USA, using PCR-RFLP (polymerase chain reaction-restricted fragment length polymorphism) analyses of mitochondrial DNA, to estimate the origin and dispersal of L. macrochirus in Japan and Korea. Five haplotypes of mitochondrial DNA detected in Japanese and Korean populations completely coincided with the haplotypes of the Guttenberg population. Haplotype diversity of invading populations was shown to be highest in populations established in the 1960s, while genetic variability was lower in more recently established populations. Our results suggest that all L. macrochirus in Japan and Korea have originated from the 15 fish first introduced in 1960. Low haplotype diversity in newly established populations is probably due to genetic drift arising from repeated population bottlenecks, while the high similarity of haplotypes among neighbouring populations is considered to reflect the history of transplantation by humans.  相似文献

A comparison of allozyme variation, restriction fragment length polymorphisms in the mitochondrial DNA and partial sequences of the ND II gene (496 bp) was made among two lacustrine populations of the piscivorous chub (Opsariichthys uncirostris uncirostris) in Japan, four fluvial populations in Korea, one lacustrine population in Russia and one specimen from the Amur River (O. u. amurensis). All analyses indicate that the Japanese populations of piscivorous chub are separable from the Asian mainland populations of Korea and Russia. The latter populations were further divided into the Korean and Russian fish. Although opinions are divided on the phylogenetic position of the population in Lake Mikata, Japan, which shows unique morphological traits intermediate between those of the population in Lake Biwa and the mainland populations, the current analysis indicates a closer relationship to the population in Lake Biwa.  相似文献

Height data of North Korean escapees are analyzed to assess changes in their biological standard of living. In contrast to the population of South Korea, as well as to that of most of the rest of the world, North Koreans did not experience an increase in physical stature during the second half of the 20th century. The divergence between the height of North- and South-Koreans began among the birth cohorts of the late 1940s and became increasingly pronounced thereafter. This is an indication of the adverse socio-economic circumstances prevailing in the northern part of the Korean peninsula.  相似文献

The lycaenid butterfly Zizina emelina emelina (de l’Orza) (previously Zizina otis emelina; Lepidoptera, Lycaenidae) has populations distributed across Japan and Korea. Zizina emelina is listed on Japan’s Red List as an endangered species, owing to the loss of its principal plant food and habitat. Researchers previously investigated the genetic diversity and structure in Japanese populations by using mitochondrial and nuclear DNA analyses alongside their Wolbachia infection status to consider the conservation strategy. In this study, we investigated the genetic variation and Wolbachia infection status of Korean populations and compared our findings with these traits in the Japanese populations. Four novel mitochondrial haplotypes were found in the Korean populations, whereas nuclear DNA analysis revealed one new haplotype and another that matched the one reported previously in Japan. The two known strains of Wolbachia in the Japanese populations were also found in the Korean ones. Mitochondrial DNA analysis demonstrated that no gene flow had occurred between the Japanese and Korean populations. The fact that they share the same nuclear haplotype and Wolbachia strains, however, indicates a low level of population differentiation between the two.  相似文献

Multivariate methods were used to compare meristic and morphometric characters of Ammodytes personatus from four populations in Korea (3) and Japan (1). ANCOVA showed the slopes of head length (Japan > East > South > West) and body depth (South > Japan > East > West) relative to total length to differ significantly among populations. Vertebrae and fin rays’ numbers differed significantly among populations, the former ranging between 64 and 67 (mode = 65, 66) in the East population, 62–67 (63, 64) in the West population and 62–64 (62, 63) in the South population in Korea. PCA and CDA, based on 14 morphometric characters, showed that scores plotted on axes 1-2 and 2-3 separated the three Korean populations but overlapped between the South and Japanese populations. These results suggest that the Korean A. personatus may comprise at least two populations. The text was submitted by the authors in English.  相似文献

A population genetic study was undertaken to investigate the origin of Koreans. Thirteen polymorphic and 7 monomorphic blood genetic markers (serum proteins and red cell enzymes) were studied in a group of 437 Koreans. Genetic distance analyses by both cluster and principal components models were performed between Koreans and eight other populations (Koreans in China, Japanese, Han Chinese, Mongolians, Zhuangs, Malays, Javanese, and Soviet Asians) on the basis of 47 alleles controlled by 15 polymorphic loci. A more detailed analysis using 65 alleles at 19 polymorphic loci was performed on six populations. Both analyses demonstrated genetic evidence of the origin of Koreans from the central Asian Mongolians. Further, the Koreans are more closely related to the Japanese and quite distant from the Chinese. The above evidence of the origin of Koreans fits well with the ethnohistoric account of the origin of Koreans and the Korean language. The minority Koreans in China also maintained their genetic identity.  相似文献

Luciola lateralis is widely distributed throughout the Korean Peninsula, northeast China, Sakhalin, and Japan. Two ecological types are recognized in Japan based on flash and hatching time characteristics. The mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase II gene was surveyed by restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis for Japan (46 populations) and Korea (two populations). Eleven haplotypes were detected. Gene trees revealed that haplotypes between Japan and Korea are much more differentiated in nucleotide sequences (8.1%) than those within Japan (0.3-1.4%) and Korea (0.7%). Haplotypes between Honshu and Hokkaido are not separated as clades, and the two ecological types cannot be segregated from each other phylogenetically. We suggest that the Japanese populations of this species may have dispersed within one million years ago and that ecological differences may be the result of physiological adaptation to cold climates.  相似文献

The growth of Korean immigrant entrepreneurship in Chicago is a product of three interacting factors: employment opportunities in the general labour market, resource mobilization, and business opportunity structures. Because of their language barrier and less transferable education and occupational skills in the American labour market, many Korean immigrants could not find white‐collar occupations for which they had been trained. Disadvantaged, but still strongly motivated for upward economic mobility in the United States, many of them became self‐employed business owners. Korean immigrants’ middle‐class backgrounds and their stable family structures and strong family ties helped them to realize their goal of business ownership. In addition, social networks based on kinship, friendship, church membership, and school ties provided prospective business owners with financial assistance, training, business advice, and information about business opportunities. The first business opportunities for Korean immigrants of Chicago opened in Korean ethnic markets and non‐ethnic minority markets almost simultaneously in the early 1970s. While the demand of Koreans for their cultural products created an economic niche for Korean‐oriented businesses, the export‐import trade linkage between South Korea and the United States has paved the way for the entrance of Korean businesses into minority areas. Because of different economic niches, the two types of Korean businesses developed independently. The interethnic succession of residence, which had occurred in the late 1960s and early 1970s also produced vacated business opportunities in Koreatown and black neighbourhoods, enabling Korean immigrants to enter these areas without great resistance from local businesses. After Korean immigrants had accumulated capital and experience in Korean ethnic markets and minority markets, they advanced into more capital‐intensive businesses like garment manufacturing. Korean immigrant professionals began to enter the Korean ethnic economy in the early 1980s when the foundation of the Korean ethnic economy was already established.  相似文献

Accurate taxonomic classification of wildlife species is crucial for guiding biological research and for developing effective management and conservation programs. The taxonomic status of Eurasian badgers from South Korea remains poorly resolved. Here we assessed the phylogenetic relationships and genetic variation of Eurasia badgers using partial mitochondrial fragments to elucidate the evolutionary history and taxonomic status of badgers from the Korean Peninsula. Forty-eight unique haplotypes from 125 individuals were observed. Phylogenetic reconstructions and reduced median networks indicate that Eurasian badgers consisted of four geographic clades (Japan, Eastern Eurasia, Western Eurasia, and Caucasus) with a relatively weak split observed within Eastern Eurasia. Estimated divergence time between the Japanese and Eastern Eurasian clades, including the Korean population, was 467,100 years (69,200–1,085,500 years). The results of this study support the hypothesis that the Japanese badger migrated from the Eurasian continent over the Korea-Japan land bridge and that the Korean Peninsula was an important refugia during the Pleistocene. Our study confirmed that the South Korean badger, Meles meles, belongs to the Eastern Eurasian clade. Based on these results and those of previous studies, we recommend that the scientific name of the Korean badger be changed from M. meles to Meles leucurus (Asian badger).  相似文献

Haplotypes or subhaplotypes in the beta-globin gene cluster were examined in 31 normal Japanese and 21 Korean families. Major haplotypes were VII, V, and I, which shared a common subhaplotype [+----], and occurred in 70% of the Japanese and 68% of the Koreans. Three haploypes which shared a common subhaplotype [-+-++], bearing the XmnI site 5' to the G gamma-globin gene, occurred in 13% of the Japanese and 7.3% of the Koreans. One subhaplotype [-++-+], which is closely linked to the A gamma T-globin gene, had an incidence of 6.6% in the Japanese and 20% in the Koreans. Rare subhaplotypes [---++], and [- +] which has been observed mainly in Melanesians and Polynesians, and a very rare subhaplotype [-----] were observed. The present study suggests that high or low G gamma-globin chain production is closely related to subhaplotypes [-+-++] and [+----], respectively, among the normal adult population.  相似文献

Allozyme Diversity in Populations of Cymbidium goeringii (Orchidaceae)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract: Using 14 allozyme loci, we investigated levels of genetic diversity within populations, and degree of genetic divergence among 24 populations of Cymbidium goeringii (Orchidaceae) in Korea and Japan. Cymbidium goeringii maintains high levels of genetic diversity both at population (mean expected heterozygosity, H e = 0.238) and species levels (0.260). Means of H e found in 24 populations were not significantly different from each other. About 90 % of the total variation in the species is common to all populations (mean G ST = 0.108). No unique allele was found in any population. The indirect estimate of gene flow based on the mean G ST was high ( Nm = 2.06). Nei's genetic identities for pairs of populations had high values (mean = 0.974 [SD = 0.013]). The Mantel-Z test showed a significant correlation between genetic distance and geographic distance. However, the mean G ST value between 17 populations in Korea and seven Japanese populations was relatively low (0.029), even though the land connection between the southern Korean peninsula and southern Japanese archipelagos has not existed since the middle Pleistocene. Large numbers of small seeds of C. goeringii might travel long distances by wind from populations to populations both in Korea and Japan, increasing genetic diversity within populations and maintaining low genetic differentiation among populations.  相似文献

Eight temperate seagrass species (five in the genus Zostera, two in the genus Phyllospadix, and Ruppia maritima) have been previously reported in coastal waters off the Korean peninsula, which lies between 33°N and 43°N. Recently, a species of Halophila, a genus which occurs predominantly in tropical and subtropical areas, has been observed on the southern coast of Korea for the first time. The species was identified as Halophila nipponica. H. nipponica is distributed in warm temperate regions of Japan influenced by the warm Tsushima Current and was previously unknown outside the Japanese archipelago. Thus, we are able to report a range extension into Korea. The Korean Halophila meadow that we observed covered an area of about 2.1 ha, with average shoot density of about 1300 m−2. We measured morphological features of vegetative and reproductive organs between June and September 2007. Morphological and reproductive features of the Halophila species in Korea were similar to those of the species in Japan. Increased water temperature in the coastal waters of Korea may at least partially account for the persistence of this new population.  相似文献

Since the first decade of this century, public monuments to the memory of “comfort women” – women and girls forced into sexual service from the 1930s through 1945, by the Japanese Imperial Army – have been established in the United States by the Korean diaspora. This paper analyses recent memorials in the suburbs of New York that have experienced rapid immigration from Korea since the 1990s. The memorials met local resistance due to perceptions of unrelatedness to the American land. Such immigrant initiatives, however, have been supported by municipal governance. The project of inscribing a passage from East Asian history in the American context may be considered symptomatic of wider cognitive and social shifts in immigrant adaptation. Assimilation through the inclusion of immigrant heritage, along with an increasing sense of entitlement in being both “ethnic” and “American”, have been integral to this contest regarding collective memory.  相似文献

The Asiatic black bear is one of the most endangered mammals in South Korea owing to population declines resulting from human exploitation and habitat fragmentation. To restore the black bear population in South Korea, 27 bear cubs from North Korea and Russian Far East (Primorsky Krai) were imported and released into Jirisan National Park, a reservoir of the largest wild population in South Korea, in 2004. To monitor the success of this reintroduction, the genetic diversity and population structure of the reintroduced black bears were measured using both mitochondrial and nuclear DNA markers. Mitochondrial D-loop region DNA sequences (615 bp) of 43 Japanese black bears from previous study and 14 Southeast Asian black bears in this study were employed to obtain phylogenetic inference of the reintroduced black bears. The mitochondrial phylogeny indicated Asiatic black bear populations from Russian Far East and North Korea form a single evolutionary unit distinct from populations from Japan and Southeast Asia. Mean expected heterozygosity (H(E)) across 16 microsatellite loci was 0.648 for Russian and 0.676 for North Korean populations. There was a moderate but significant level of microsatellite differentiation (F(ST) = 0.063) between black bears from the 2 source areas. In addition, genetic evidences revealed that 2 populations are represented as diverging groups, with lingering genetic admixture among individuals of 2 source populations. Relatedness analysis based on genetic markers indicated several discrepancies with the pedigree records. Implication of the phylogenetic and genetic evidences on long-term management of Asiatic black bears in South Korea is discussed.  相似文献
