Ramets of Lolium perenne from the same genotypes were grownin nutrient solutions of two concentrations. Additional mineralnutrition increased the rate of production of new tillers, therate of increase in size of tillers and the rate of productionof new roots, but not the rate of growth of individual mainroots. The genotypes differed considerably from each other intheir rates of growth, especially of shoot growth. When thegrowth-rate of the same population of genotypes was alteredby changing the environmental conditions it was found that thelower the mean rate of shoot growth, the greater its coefficientof variation. Variation in the rate of shoot growth, due tomineral nutrition and genetic constitution of the plants growingin a dilute nutrient solution, was accompanied by a similarbut smaller variation in the number of roots.  相似文献

This study was aimed at investigating the growth and nutrient uptake of cucumber plants affected by forced aeration of supplying oxygen and stimulating gas exchange rate in root zone in a substrate. Five aeration levels during the growth (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 L/min) were applied. Maximum leaf area and leaf fresh and dry weights were obtained at an aeration level of 0.5 L/min. Excessive aeration in root zone inhibited leaf area expansion, relative leaf growth rate and crop growth rate. An optimum leaf area index of 3.0 to 3.5 was estimated in range of 0 and 0.5 L/min. The highest fruit yield was measured of 1.13 kg/plant at 0.5 L/min, whereas at 2.0 L/min it was 0.62 kg/plant. Potassium concentration in petiole sap was lower at 63 days after transplanting than that at 32 days after transplanting. Ethylene concentrations increased with higher aeration values, however, CO2 concentration reduced with increased aeration. All bioactive compounds (polyphenols, flavonoids, flavanols, tannins and ascorbic acid) and the levels of antioxidant activities by ferric-reducing/antioxidant power and cupric reducing antioxidant capacity in ethanol extracts of cucumbers differed significantly in the investigated samples and were the highest at aeration level of 0.5 L/min in comparison with other samples (P <0.05). In conclusion, antioxidant status (bioactive compounds and antioxidant activities) improved with the appropriate aeration, which is effective for higher fruit yield and bioactivity. Excessive aeration inhibited root respiration, nutrients, bioactivity, and water uptake, and it resulted in the reduction of plant growth and fruit yield.  相似文献

Information on the response of root growth and morphology to soil strength is useful for testing suitability of existing and new tillage methods and/or for selecting plants suitable for a specific site with or without tillage. Although there is extensive published information on the root growth-soil strength relationships for annual agricultural plants, such information is scarce for woody, perennial tree species. The purpose of this study is to examine growth and morphology of the root systems of 17-day-old eucalypt seedlings with respect to variation in soil strength. Soil strength in this study was varied by compaction of a well-aggregated clay soil to bulk densities of 0.7–1.0 Mg m-3 whilst maintaining adequate water availability and aeration for plant growth. Lengths and tip-diameters of primary and lateral roots were measured on the excavated root systems of seedlings. With increase in bulk density and also soil strength (expressed as penetrometer resistance), total length of primary and lateral roots decreased. There were 71 and 31% reduction in the lengths of primary and lateral roots respectively with an increase in penetrometer resistance from 0.4 to 4.2 MPa. This indicated primary roots to be more sensitive to high soil strength than the lateral roots. Average length of lateral roots and diameters of both primary and lateral root tips increased with an increase in soil strength as well. There was greater abundance of lateral roots (no. of lateral roots per unit length of primary root) and root hairs with increased soil strength. The observed root behaviour to variable soil strength is discussed in the context of compensatory growth of roots and overall growth of plants.  相似文献

Echinochloa phyllopogon was grown hydroponically under four root zone gassing treatments to determine aeration effects on the growth and development of the plant root system. Although mesocotyl growth and the number of nodal roots were unaffected by the treatments, other aspects of plant growth were altered. Shoot growth was reduced by hypoxic (5 kPa partial pressure O2 in nitrogen gas) and anoxic conditions (O2 free nitrogen gas), but not by ethylene (0.1 ppm in air). Seminal root growth was unaffected by hypoxia or ethylene treatments, but was reduced under anoxia. Hypoxic environments stimulated the emergence of roots along the length of the mesocotyl when compared to aerobic controls; anoxic and ethylene treatments had no significant effects. Mesocotyl roots elongated from primordia that were produced de novo in response to the hypoxic treatment. Under hypoxic conditions, aerenchyma was present in the cortex of nodal roots and to a lesser extent in seminal roots, but mesocotyl roots were devoid of aerenchyma under these conditions. The results are compared with the literature concerning flooding and aeration effects on growth and development in other species.  相似文献

Fast-growing hairy root cultures of Hyoscyamus muticus induced by Agrobacterium rhizogenes offer a potential production system for tropane alkaloids. Oxygen deficiency has been shown to limit growth and biomass accumulation of hairy roots, whereas little experimental data is available on the effect of oxygen on alkaloid production. We have investigated the effect of Vitreoscilla hemoglobin (VHb) expression and cultivation conditions on the complete alkaloid profile of H. muticus hairy roots in shake flasks and in a laboratory scale bioreactor. We optimized the growth medium composition and studied the effects of sucrose, ammonium, nitrate, and phosphate on growth and alkaloid production. Maximum biomass accumulation was achieved with the highest and maximum hyoscyamine content with the lowest sucrose concentration. The optimum nitrate concentration for growth was higher for the VHb line than the control. Neither VHb expression nor aeration improved the hyoscyamine content significantly, thus suggesting that hyoscyamine biosynthesis is not limited by oxygen availability. Interestingly, the effect of VHb expression on the alkaloid profile was slightly different from that of aeration. VHb expression did not affect the concentrations of cuscohygrine, which was increased by aeration. Therefore, the effect of VHb is probably not related only to its ability to increase the intracellular effective oxygen concentration.  相似文献

A real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method was applied to quantify the nifH gene pool in cucumber shoot and root and to evaluate how nitrogen (N) supply and plant age affect the nifH gene pool. In shoots, the relative abundance of the nifH gene was affected neither by different stages of plant growth nor by N supply. In roots, higher numbers of diazotrophic bacteria were found compared with that in the shoot. The nifH gene pool in roots significantly increased with plant age, and unexpectedly, the pool size was positively correlated with N supply. The relative abundance of nifH gene copy numbers in roots was also positively correlated (r = 0.96) with total N uptake of the plant. The data suggest that real-time PCR-based nifH gene quantification in combination with N-content analysis can be used as an efficient way to perform further studies to evaluate the direct contribution of the N2-fixing plant-colonizing plant growth promoting bacteria to plant N nutrition.  相似文献

Hairy root cultures have demonstrated great promise in terms of their biosynthetic capability toward the production of secondary metabolites, but continue to constitute a major challenge with regard to large-scale cultures. In order to assess the possibility of conducting mass production of biomass, and the extraction of useful metabolites fromPanax ginseng. P. ginseng hairy roots, transformed byRhizobium rhizogenes KCTC 2744, were used in bioreactors of different types and sizes. The most effective mass production of hairy roots was achieved in several differently sized air bubble bioreactors compared to all other bioreactor types. Hairy root growth was enhanced by aeration, and the production increased with increasing aeration rate in a 1 L bioreactor culture. It was determined that the hairy root growth rate could be substantially enhanced by increases in the aeration rate upto 0.5 wm, but at aeration rates above 0.5 wm, only slight promotions in growth rates were observed. In 20 L air bubble bioreactors, with a variety of inoculum sizes, the hairy roots exhibited the most robust growth rates with an inoculum size of 0.1% (w/v), within the range 0.1 to 0.7% (w/v). The specific growth rates of the hairy roots decreased with increases in the inoculum size.  相似文献

Summary Two varieties of the annual plant Phlox drummondii were grown in pots in the greenhouse. Pots differed in the mixture of varieties, total number of plants, spatial clustering of plants, and soil treatment. The shoot biomass of centrally located target plants was significantly influenced by the varietal composition within a pot, and the pattern of this genetic effect varied with both plant density and soil treatment. Density and soil treatment interacted strongly, with the negative effect of neighbors on shoot growth being significantly greater when soil nutrient concentrations were lower. The varieties differed significantly in their relative allocation of biomass to roots. Relative root allocation was increased in response to both the presence of neighbors and a decrease in soil nutrient availability. These factors did not interact significantly in their effects.Although both plant size and relative allocation to roots were influenced by varietal composition, these genetic effects were small relative to the effects of density and soil treatment. The strong interactions between plant location, plant identity, and soil treatment suggest that relations between neighbors will be very complex in natural populations occupying microgeographically heterogeneous habitats. A more complete understanding of these interactions will be required before realistic dynamic models of natural populations can be constructed.  相似文献

Three strains of perennial ryegrass known to give progeny widelyvarying in yield when grown as spaced plants in the field, weregrown in solution culture at high and low levels of nutrition. It was found that although the order of yield remained the sameas in the field, the actual relative difference in yield betweenthe three strains was very small in solution culture. Of thefactors studied which might be responsible for this wide variationin yield between the three strains when grown in the field, the most prominent were root yield and shoot/root ratio. Itwas concluded that the large root system of the highest yieldingstrain enabled it to take advantage of the large volume of soilavailable for exploitation in the field. In nutrient solution root size was of little importance andthe difference in yield between the strains was correspondinglysmall. Data on factors influencing shoot/root ratio show that low nutritionincreased root production and that increase in nitrogen nutritionlead to an increased shoot/root ratio, primarily due to enhancedshoot growth. Plants grown without aeration have higher shoot/rootratios than those grown with aeration. Although there was alower weight of roots in the non-aerated treatments the actualnumber of roots was very significantly increased, the rootsbeing finer. The number of tillers was greater in aerated thanin non-aerated solution, and the difference was most markedwith low nitrogen. It was demonstrated that shoot/root ratio varied widely betweengenotypes, and that parent/progeny correlation for this ratiowas high (r = 0.83 r). A concept of shoot/root relationship is suggested, visualizingthe shoot/root ratio as primarily representing the net productof the differential distribution of carbohydrates between rootand shoot. This distribution is genetically controlled but issubject to modification by external factors such as nutrition. The problem of the relative ‘efficiency’ of differentvarieties is considered, particularly with respect to nitrogenutilization.  相似文献

Factorial effects of photoperiod (6, 12 and 18 h) and root-zone temperatures (9, 15 and 21°C) on the growth and mineral nutrient concentration and partitioning in maize (Zea mays L.) were investigated. Strong interactions were observed between photoperiod and root-zone temperature on the growth and concentration of numerous mineral elements in the plant tops and roots. For example, a threefold increase in photoperiod (from 6 to 18 h) did not affect the growth of tops or roots if the root-zone temperature was 9°C but increased them each by eightfold if the root-zone temperature was 21°C. On the other hand, raising the root-zone temperature from 9 to 21°C increased the growth of tops and root each by ca. threefold when plants were grown with 6 h of light. At 18 h photoperiod, however, plant growth was increased 20- to 30-fold by the same rise in the root-zone temperature. The concentrations of different mineral elements in the roots and tops were affected quite differently by the interacting effects of photoperiod and root-zone temperature. In general, increasing the photoperiod at a given root-zone temperature decreased the concentrations of elements while increasing the root-zone temperature at a given photoperiod increased the concentrations of most elements in both roots and tops. The exceptions were K and B which reacted opposite to each other: K concentration in both tops and roots was relatively insensitive to photoperiod but very sensitive to root-zone temperature and the reverse was true for boron. The relative insensitivity of plant growth to increased day length as long as the roots are subjected to suboptimal (low) soil temperatures may have survival significance and point to the predominant role of root temperature over that of day length in the early growth of maize. A possible mechanism by which photoperiod and root-zone temperature might interactively alter the nutrient uptake by the roots is discussed.  相似文献

Summary The role of mechanical impedance, poor aeration and water availability in restricting pea (Pisum sativum L.) seedling root growth in sandy loam soil at three bulk densities and six matric potentials was studied. Mechanical impedance increased both with bulk density and —matric potential. In certain treatments the roots were shorter and thicker as impedance increased but in others shorter, thicker roots were found as impedance decreased and this was attributed to poor aeration. An aeration deficiency index was defined to separate the impedance and aeration effects when the two acted in combination. An aeration effect was found in soils having less than 30, 22, and 11 per cent gas-filled pore space at low, medium and high bulk densities respectively and the distribution and area of the gas/liquid interface probably influenced diffusion resistance. Effects due to restricted water availability were found only at potentials greater than –3.5 bars, the roots being shorter and thinner as moisture stress increased.  相似文献

Large and high nitrogen (N) concentration seedlings frequently have higher survival and growth in Mediterranean forest plantations than seedlings with the opposite traits, which has been linked to the production of deeper and larger root systems in the former type of seedlings. This study assessed the influence of seedling size and N concentration on root growth dynamics and its relation to shoot elongation in Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis Mill.) seedlings. We cultivated seedlings that differed in size and tissue N concentration that were subsequently transplanted into transparent methacrylate tubes in the field. The number of roots, root depth, and the root and shoot elongation rate (length increase per unit time) were periodically measured for 10 weeks. At the end of the study, we also measured the twig water potential (ψ) and the mass of plant organs. New root mass at the end of the study increased with seedling size, which was linked to the production of a greater number of new roots of lower specific length rather than to higher elongation rate of individual roots. Neither plant size nor N concentration affected root depth. New root mass per leaf mass unit, shoot elongation rate, and pre-dawn ψ were reduced with reduction in seedling size, while mid-day ψ and the root relative growth rate were not affected by seedling size. N concentration had an additive effect on plant size on root growth but its overall effect was less important than seedling size. Shoot and roots had an antagonistic elongation pattern through time in small seedlings, indicating that the growth of both organs depressed each other and that they competed for the same resources. Antagonism between shoot and root elongation decreased with plant size, disappearing in large and medium seedlings, and it was independent of seedling N concentration. We conclude that root and shoot growth but not rooting depth increased with plant size and tissue N concentration in Aleppo pine seedlings. Since production of new roots is critical for the establishment of planted seedlings, higher absolute root growth in large seedlings may increase their transplanting performance relative to small seedlings. The lack of antagonism between root and shoot growth in large seedlings suggests that these plants can provide resources to sustain simultaneous growth of both organs.  相似文献

In this paper we firstly show some general responses of biomass partitioning upon nitrogen deprivation. Secondly, these responses are explained in terms of allocation of carbon and nitrogen, photosynthesis and respiration, using a simulation model. Thirdly, we present a hypothesis for the regulation of biomass partitioning to shoots and roots.Shortly after nitrogen deprivation, the relative growth rate (RGR) of the roots generally increases and thereafter decreases, whereas that of the shoot decreases immediately. The increased RGR of the root and decreased RGR of the shoot shortly after a reduction in the nitrogen supply, cause the root weight ratio (root weight per unit plant weight) to increase rapidly. We showed previously that allocation of carbon and nitrogen to shoots and roots can satisfactorily be described as a function of the internal organic plant nitrogen concentration. Using these functions in a simulation model, we analyzed why the relative growth rate of the roots increases shortly after a reduction in nitrogen supply. The model predicts that upon nitrogen deprivation, the plant nitrogen concentration and the rate of photosynthesis per unit plant weight rapidly decrease, and the allocation of recently assimilated carbon and nitrogen to roots rapidly increases. Simulations show that the increased relative growth rate of the root upon nitrogen deprivation is explained by decreased use of carbon for root respiration, due to decreased carbon costs for nitrogen uptake. The stimulation of the relative growth rate of the root is further amplified by the increased allocation of carbon and nitrogen to roots. Using the simple relation between the plant nitrogen concentration and allocation, the model describes plant responses quite realistically.Based on information in the literature and on our own experiments we hypothesize that allocation of carbon is mediated by sucrose and cytokinins. We propose that nitrogen deprivation leads to a reduced cytokinin production, a decreased rate of cytokinin export from the roots to the shoot, and decreased cytokinin concentrations. A reduced cytokinin concentration in the shoot represses cell division in leaves, whereas a low cytokinin concentration in roots neutralizes the inhibitory effect of cytokinins on cell division. A reduced rate of cell division in the leaves leads to a reduced unloading of sucrose from the phloem into the expanding cells. Consequently, the sucrose concentration in the phloem nearby the expanding cells increases, leading to an increase in turgor pressure in the phloem nearby the leaf's division zone. In the roots, cell division continues and no accumulation of sugars occurs in dividing cells, leading to only marginal changes in osmotic potential and turgor pressure in the phloem nearby the root's cell division zone. These changes in turgor pressure in the phloem of roots and sink leaves affect the turgor pressure gradients between source leaf-sink leaf and source leaf-root in such a way that relatively more carbohydrates are exported to the roots. As a consequence RWR increases after nitrogen deprivation. This hypothesis also explains the strong relationship between allocation and the plant nitrogen status.  相似文献

In 1967 and 1968 plots of sugar beet in two identically grown crops were shaded for successive four week periods starting on 13 June, 18 July and 22 August, and the growth of the plants compared with that on unshaded plots. At the beginning of each period in 1967 some shaded and unshaded plants received additional nitrogen, and in 1968 plants continuously shaded from June to September were compared with unshaded plants irrigated to equalize their water losses with those of the shaded plants. The weather in 1967 was sunny and dry and that in 1968 dull and wet, but the yields of dry matter, and particularly of sugar, of the unshaded crop in the 2 years were similar because, although net assimilation rate (E) was greater in 1967 than 1968, mean leaf area index (L) in 1968 was almost double that in the 1967 crop. Shading decreased the incoming radiation by 56%; it decreased E proportionally in 1967, increasing L slightly, but it decreased both E (by 44%) and L in 1968. The weights of dry matter and sugar in the roots of the shaded crop were consistently smaller at the end of shading and at final harvest in October in both years, and their weights, but not those of the tops or the whole plant, at final harvest over all shading treatments in both years were proportional to the amount of radiation received by the crop between June and September. Although shading greatly decreased the supply of photosynthate to the roots, it did not change the sugar content percentage of dry matter, except in the early stages of growth when the sugar content was rapidly increasing. Sugar content percentage of fresh weight of the roots was consistently decreased by shading, wholly because water content was increased relative to dry matter. Therefore the sugar yield of shaded plants was less because the dry weights of the roots were less, not because the partition of photosynthate between sugar storage and root growth changed. There appears to be a mechanism within the root operating over a wide range of photosynthate supply that maintains a nearly constant proportion of sucrose to non-sugar, contrary to the hypothesis that sugar stored in the roots is photosynthate in excess of what can be used in growth of the plant. However, in the extreme condition of continuous shading which drastically decreased the dry weights of all parts of the plant, sugar percentage of dry matter in the roots was decreased, but only from 80 to 70%. In 1967 extra nitrogen applied at the start of shading increased L and the dry weight of the tops in all periods, but had no effect on the dry weight of roots. Because 1968 was a wet year the irrigation treatment had no effect on E or L except for a slight increase in L during the first period; it had no effect on plant dry weight. Both irrigation and additional nitrogen decreased the sugar content percentage of fresh weight of the roots only by altering their water content; sugar percentage of dry matter was unaffected. None of these changes persisted until the final harvest in October.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Both sediment and light are essential factors regulating the growth of submerged macrophytes, but the role of these two factors in regulating root morphology and physiology is far from clear. The responses of root morphology and physiology to sediment type and light availability in the submerged plant Myriophyllum spicatum were studied and the hypothesis was tested that a trade-off exists in root growth strategy between internal aeration and nutrient acquisition. METHODS: Plants were grown on two types of sediment (fertile mud and an infertile mixture of mud and sandy loam) and under three levels of light availability (600, 80 and 20 micro mol m(-2) s(-1)) in a greenhouse. KEY RESULTS: The significantly higher alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity in root tissues indicated that oxygen deficiency existed in the plants growing in fertile mud and low (or high) light environments. Significantly, low plant N and P concentrations indicated that nutrient deficiency existed in the mixed sediment and high light environment. As a response to anoxia, plants did not change the porosity of the main roots. The effect of sediment type on root morphology was insignificant under higher light environments, whereas root diameter generally decreased but specific root length (SRL) increased with decreasing light availability. Both low light and fertile mud jointly led to lack of second-order laterals. More biomass was allocated to lateral roots in infertile environments, whereas mass fractions of laterals were lower in low light and mud environments. CONCLUSIONS: These data indicate that this plant can achieve the trade-off between internal aeration and nutrient acquisition by adjusting the structure of the root system and the pattern of biomass allocation to different root orders rather than root morphology and root porosity.

A field experiment was conducted to determine the effects of light intensity and nitrate nutrition on soybean (Glycine max (L) Merr.) root growth and development. Relative growth rates, total, root and nodule dry weights, and the rates of increase in the number of roots indicated that nitrogen fixation limited growth relative to that achieved with nitrate and that the response to nitrate increases with light intensity and varies with plant age. Nitrate increased with rate of taproot extension but light intensity had no effect.  相似文献

Inadequate oxygen concentration in the root zone is a constraint to plant performance particularly in heavy, compacted and/or saline soils. Sub-surface drip irrigation (SDI) offers a means of increasing oxygen to plant roots in such soils, provided irrigation water can be hyper-aerated or oxygenated. Hydrogen peroxide (HP) at the rate of 5 litre ha−1 at the end of each irrigation cycle was injected through SDI tape to a field-grown zucchini (courgette) crop (Cucurbita pepo) on a saturated heavy clay soil in Queensland, Australia. Fruit yield, number and shoot weight increased by 25%, 29% and 24% respectively due to HP treatment compared to the control. Two pot experiments with vegetable soybean (Glycine max) and cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) compared the effectiveness of HP and air injection using a Mazzei air injector (a venturi), throughout the irrigation cycle in raising crop yield in a heavy clay soil kept at saturation or just under field capacity. Fresh pod yield of vegetable soybean increased by 82–96% in aeration treatments compared with the control. The yield increase was associated with more pods per plant and greater mean pod weight. Significantly higher above ground biomass and light interception were evident with aeration, irrespective of soil water treatment. Similarly cotton lint yield increased by 14–28% in aeration treatments compared with the control. The higher lint yield was associated with more squares and bolls per plant which accompanied greater above ground biomass and an increase in root mass, root length and soil respiration. Air injection and HP effected greater water use, but also brought about an enhancement of water use efficiency (WUE) for pod and lint yield, and increased leaf photosynthetic rate in both species but had no effect on transpiration rate and stomatal conductance per unit leaf area. Aeration-induced enhanced root function was arguably responsible for greater fruit set and yield in all three crops, while in vegetable soybean greater canopy cover, radiation interception and total vegetative biomass were responsible for additional yield benefit. Increased aeration of the root zone in heavy clay soils employing either air injection or HP proved beneficial to SDI irrigated crops, irrespective of the soil water conditions, and can add value to grower investments in SDI.  相似文献

Seasonal variations and aeration effects on water quality improvements and the physiological responses of Nymphaea tetragona Georgi were investigated with mesocosm experiments. Plants were hydroponically cultivated in six purifying tanks (aerated, non-aerated) and the characteristics of the plants were measured. Water quality improvements in purifying tanks were evaluated by comparing to the control tanks. The results showed that continuous aeration affected the plant morphology and physiology. The lengths of the roots, petioles and leaf limbs in aeration conditions were shorter than in non-aeration conditions. Chlorophyll and soluble protein contents of the leaf limbs in aerated tanks decreased, while peroxidase and catalase activities of roots tissues increased. In spring and summer, effects of aeration on the plants were less than in autumn. Total nitrogen (TN) and ammonia nitrogen (NH4 +-N) in aerated tanks were lower than in non-aerated tanks, while total phosphorus (TP) and dissolved phosphorus (DP) increased in spring and summer. In autumn, effects of aeration on the plants became more significant. TN, NH4 +-N, TP and DP became higher in aerated tanks than in non-aerated tanks in autumn. This work provided evidences for regulating aeration techniques based on seasonal variations of the plant physiology in restoring polluted stagnant water.  相似文献
