A method was used for applying a uniform mechanical impedanceto plant roots using sand packed at different bulk densitieswith depth within each growth cylinder. In a growth experiment, replicate cylinders were packed with sand to give the followingmechanical impedances: 0.25 MPa penetration resistance (negligibleimpedance), 1.40 MPa (moderate impedance) and 2.30 MPa (severeimpedance). Seedlings of Lolium perenne L., Trifolium repensL. and Agrostis capillaris were grown for 23 d in each impedancetreatment and effects on both roots and shoots were studied.Severe mechanical impedance affected both root and shoot growthrates for all three species resulting in smaller leaves andshorter roots. For the grasses, the root-to-shoot ratio at harvestwas the same for all the treatments, but a delay in the initiationof both shoots and roots was observed in the severe mechanicalimpedance treatment. The results are discussed in relation tothe possibility that roots penetrating the impeding treatmentsmay have caused signalling that kept shoot and root growth insynchrony. Differences observed in the response to mechanicalimpedance of T. repens compared to the other two species maybe a function of differences in the physiology between mono-and dicotyledonous species. Tuber formation in intact potato plants (Solanum tuberosum L.cv. Sebago) was reduced by high shoot or root temperatures andstrongly inhibited when both were high. When both the shootand root temperatures were high, disbudding strongly promotedtuberization. There was a smaller increase with warm roots andcool shoots, but no response with warm shoots and cool roots. When both the shoots and roots were cool, disbudding reducedtuberization. Exogenous GA3, effectively substituted for thebuds at high temperatures, completely preventing tuberization. In apical cuttings, removal of the terminal bud, but not theroots, reduced the inhibitory effects of high temperatures ontuberization. The experiment indicates that tuber productionmay be controlled by at least three factors: a promoter, whichis not assimilate, produced by the buds at cool temperatures;an inhibitor, derived from the buds, but dependent on warm roottemperatures for its formation; and a second inhibitor derivedfrom the mature leaves and produced in response to warm shoottemperatures. The seminal root system of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) consistsof a primary seminal root and the first and second pair of seminalroots, counting upwards. These roots are plagiotropic. The directionof growth was estimated as the angle from the vertical for eachof the three types of seminal roots that protruded from a hemispherical,soil-filled basket buried in the field. The angle of growthvaried with cultivar. It was smallest in the primary seminalroot and largest in the second pair of roots in all 12 cultivarsgrown in the field. Attempts to modify the angle of growth weremade under controlled environmental conditions. When the grainwas sown with its embryo face down, the angle of growth of thefirst pair of roots became smaller in the cultivars with inherentlylarger angles. The excision of the primary seminal root affectedthe first pair of roots and the excision of the first pair affectedthe second pair. These effects comprised a decrease in the angleof growth and an increase in root diameter. These changes inthe angle of growth caused by root excision is interpreted asa kind of compensatory growth. The direction of root growthand its impact on shaping wheat root system is discussed.Copyright1994, 1999 Academic Press Compensatory growth, direction of growth, gravitropism, liminal angle, plagiotropism, seminal roots, Triticum aestivum L., wheat  相似文献

The effect of concurrent salinity (0-60 mM NaCl) and rootzonehypoxia (flooding for up to 15 d) on shoot and root growth andshoot ion concentrations of six species of Trifolium (T. subterraneumL., T. fragiferum L., T. michelianum Savi., T. isthmocarpumBot., T. purpureum Lois., and T. repens L.), was studied intwo greenhouse experiments. There was a significant salinityx flooding effect for shoot yield but no significant salinityx flooding x species interaction although individual speciesdiffered significantly (P < 0·001) in their growthresponse to the saline or flooded conditions separately. Concentrationsof Na and Cl in the shoots of all species increased with increasingperiods of saline flooding and there was a significant salinityx flooding interaction. Sodium and Cl concentrations were significantlyhigher (P < 0·001) in T. purpureum, the species inwhich shoot growth was most depressed by saline flooding, thanother species. In T. michelianum, T. fragiferum and T. repens, fresh and dry weight of roots increased with flooding underboth saline and non-saline conditions while in T. subterraneumroot growth decreased. A significant proportion of the increasedroot growth in the first three species occurred as new adventitiousroots. These roots had higher percentages of internal gas spaceswithin the root tissue even in the presence of salinity comparedwith roots from non-flooded conditions. There were also significantlymore gas spaces in the total root tissue in T. fragiferum andT. repens under saline-flooding than in roots of T. subterraneum.Electron micrographs of the root cross sections illustratedthe presence of these gas spaces or aerenchyma. Trifolium fragiferum, T. repens and T. michelianum are morelikely to be suited to growth in soils prone to high salinityand to flooding than are T. subterraneum, T. purpureum and T.ishmocarpum.Copyright 1993, 1999 Academic Press Trifolium subterraneum, Trifolium fragiferum, Trifolium michelianum, Trifolium isthmocarpum, Trifolium purpureum, Trifolium repens, salinity, flooding, hypoxia, adventitious roots, aerenchyma, subterranean clover, white clover, strawberry clover, purple clover, balansa clover  相似文献

Root and Shoot Growth of Plants Treated with Abscisic Acid   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Young seedlings of Capsicum annum L., Commelina communis L.and maize (Zea mays L.) were subjected to a mild water-stressingtreatment and/or treated with abscisic acid (ABA). Plants rootedin soil received a soil-drying treatment and their leaves weresprayed with a 10–4 M solution of ABA. Plants grown insolution culture were stressed by the addition of polyethyleneglycol (PEG) to the rooting medium and ABA was also added tothe rooting medium, either with or without PEG. The effectsof both treatments on the growth of roots and shoots and theultimate root: shoot dry weight ratio were very similar. Shootgrowth was limited both by water stress and by ABA application;while there was some evidence that mild water stress and/orABA application may have resulted in a stimulation of root growth.More severe water stress reduced the growth of roots but theoverall effect of stress was to increase the ratio of rootsto shoots. Barley and rice, at the early tillering stage, were grown inaerated nutrient solutions (> 7 mg O2 l–1) and transferredto solutions of low O2 concentrations (< 0.5 mg l –1). For barley, low O2 concentrations during the first 5 days severelyinhibited growth of seminal roots had less effect on nodal roots, and did not reduce shoot growth. Longer exposure to low O2 concentrationsreduced shoot as well as root growth. Sugar concentrations inroots and shoots increased within 7 h after transfer of plantsto low O2 concentrations. After 5 days at low O2 concentrationssugar concentrations were very high in fast growing nodal rootsand in shoots, as well as in the slower growing seminal roots. In rice, low O2 concentrations increased sugar levels of rootsduring summer, but not during winter. In summer, the highersugar levels at low O2 concentrations persisted throughout adiurnal cycle. In root apices, sugar concentrations were increasedby low O2 concentrations, even though the experiment was donein winter and the bulk of the root system showed no differencein sugar levels. The data indicate that sugar accumulation, at low O2 concentrations,is caused by reduced growth and also that even apices of rootsgrown at low O2 concentrations have sufficient substrates forrespiration. Morphological changes of roots and shoots following oxygen deficiencyin the root medium and after partial pruning of the root systemwere analyzed to obtain easily measurable parameters of theadaptive capacity of the root system against stress. Wheat seedlings(Triticum aestivum L. cv. Hatri) were cultivated on nutrientsolution which was either aerated or flushed with nitrogen,or were cultivated on flooded sand. On the third day after grainswelling in two pruning variants, roots 1–3 or 4–8were excised. Root anaerobiosis retarded longitudinal growth and biomass accumulationof the shoot and the seminal roots, and stimulated the developmentof adventitious roots. Partial removal caused a general compensativegrowth of the remaining roots under aerobic conditions. Root pruning plus anaerobiosis exceeded the compensatory capacityof the seedlings and thus caused a strong delay of elongationand biomass accumulation of both roots and shoots, includingdecrease of the root/shoot ratio. Roots became independent ofendosperm reserves on the seventh day under aerobic conditionsthough caryopses were not completely exhausted at this time.Additionally, oxygen deficiency delayed the reserve exhaustionprocess. Maize (Zea mays L.) and spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)were grown in nutrient solution at uniformly high air temperature(20 °C), but different root zone temperatures (RZT 20, 16,12 °C). To manipulate the ratio of shoot activity to rootactivity, the plants were grown with their shoot base includingthe apical meristem either above (i.e. at 20 °C) or withinthe nutrient solution (i.e. at 20, 16 or 12 °C). In wheat, the ratio of shoot:root dry matter partitioning decreasedat low RZT, whereas the opposite was true for maize. In bothspecies, dry matter partitioning to the shoot was one-sidedlyincreased when the shoot base temperature, and thus shoot activity, were increased at low RZT. The concentrations of non-structuralcarbohydrates (NSC) in the shoots and roots were higher at lowin comparison to high RZT in both species, irrespective of theshoot base temperature. The concentrations of nitrogen (N) inthe shoot and root fresh matter also increased at low RZT withthe exception of maize grown at 12 °C RZT and 20 °Cshoot base temperature. The ratio of NSC:N was increased inboth species at low RZT. However this ratio was negatively correlatedwith the ratio of shoot:root dry matter partitioning in wheat, but positively correlated in maize. It is suggested that dry matter partitioning between shoot androots at low RZT is not causally related to the internal nitrogenor carbohydrate status of the plants. Furthermore, balancedactivity between shoot and roots is maintained by adaptationsin specific shoot and root activity, rather than by an alteredratio of biomass allocation between shoot and roots.Copyright1994, 1999 Academic Press Wheat, Triticum aestivum, maize, Zea mays, root temperature, shoot meristem temperature, biomass allocation, shoot:root ratio, carbohydrate status, nitrogen status, functional equilibrium  相似文献

Plants of Molinia caerulea were grown in pots for two seasonsat two levels of nitrogen (N) supply and two levels of defoliation. All N supplied was enriched with 15N in the first season andwas at natural abundance in the second season. This allowedthe contribution of remobilization from overwintering storesto be discriminated from current root uptake in supplying Nfor new shoot growth in the second season. The effects of Nsupply and defoliation upon the internal cycling of N in M.caerulea were quantified. N was remobilized from both roots and basal internodes to supportnew shoot, especially leaf, growth in spring. Roots suppliedmore N than basal internodes. Since the remobilization mainlyoccurred before the onset of root N uptake, internal cyclingwas important for the earliest period of shoot growth. An increasedN supply increased the amount of N remobilized to new shootgrowth, however, the proportion of N remobilized from overwinteringstores was independent of N supply. Defoliation increased theamount of N remobilized from the roots, and had no effect onthe 15N content of basal internodes of plants receiving a lowsupply of N. Remobilization of N from leaves of undefoliatedplants occurred later in the season. Remobilization from leavessupplied flowers in plants receiving a low N supply and bothflowers and new basal internodes in plants receiving a higherN supply. Seed swelling, germination, root extension, lateral root initiationand shoot growth were studied in soils of different water contents, using non-destructive, serial neutron radiography. Seeds fromthree varieties of soya beans (Glycine max L.) and one varietyeach of maize (Zea mays L.) and vetch (Vicia sativa L.) wereused. The seeds germinated when they had increased in size bya certain amount, if germination is taken as the time when theradicle first appears. The rate at which roots and shoots extendalso depend on soil water content. Root-tiller relations were investigated in spring barley grownin soil in deep pots. The total dry wt of the root system reachedits maximum 6 weeks from sowing, when the shoot weight was only50 per cent of its value at maturity. Seminal and nodal rootscomprised 40 and 60 per cent, respectively, of the total rootdry wt at maturity; the majority of the nodal root weight wasassociated with the main shoot. The main shoot had approximatelytwice as many nodal roots as either of the first two primarytillers (T1 and T2), and the primary and secondary tillers appearinglater were very poorly rooted. Some tillers, especially secondarytillers that died prematurely, produced no nodal roots. Theweight of the seminal roots and nodal roots attached to themain shoot continued to increase up to maturity but the drywt of nodal roots on tillers declined with time. This patternof growth was closely related to the pattern of 14C assimilateddistribution within the root system. A very small proportionof 14C assimilated by the main shoot and T1 and T2 was exported. The majority of the exported assimilate went to the seminalroot system and to nodal roots attached to the main shoot. Individualnodal and seminal roots seemed to have different roles in supplyingnutrients to the shoot system, with the former mainly providing32P-phosphate to its tiller of origin and the latter generallysupplying the main shoot and primary tillers. Trifolium repens has two types of root, one derived from theseed and the adventitious roots derived from the stolon nodes. It has been suggested that these two systems have differentpotentials for supporting growth. This paper presents a comparisonof plants grown on single seedling or adventitious roots anddemonstrates that although the shoot: root ratios for the twotypes differ this may be explained by differing shoot morphologies.Comparison of the lamina: root ratios for the two types of plantproduced no statistically significant differences and it isproposed that the two types of root system do not differ intheir relationship with leaf growth. A mechanism for large diameter‘tap’ root formation is suggested. white clover, Trifolium repens L., adventitious roots, seedling roots, shoot: root ratio  相似文献

Partial root drying (PRD) has been shown to stimulate stomatal-closure response and improve water-use efficiency and thus biomass production and grain yield under water deficiency. While most studies focus on above-ground responses to PRD, we examined how root responses contributed to effects of partial root drying. In particular, in two experiments with oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) we investigated whether roots were able to forage for patchily distributed water, and how this affected plant growth compared with uniform watering and alternate watering (in which different parts of the roots receive water alternately). The first pot experiment was carried out in the greenhouse and the second outside under a rain-shelter in which also the watering amount was varied. The results indicate that B. napus roots were able to forage for fixed water patches by selective root placement. In the first experiment with small plants, root foraging was equally effective as enhanced water-use efficiency under alternate watering. Both treatments resulted in about 10% higher shoot biomass compared with uniform watering. Alternate watering generally outperformed uniform watering in the second experiment, but the success depended on the time of harvest and the water supply level. Measurements indicated that only the alternate watering regime effectively reduced stomatal conductance, but lead to a higher shoot biomass only under more severe (50%) rather than under milder water deficiency (70% of a well watered control). Water deficiency strongly reduced leaf initiation rates and leaf sizes in B. napus, but for a given level of water supply the supply pattern (uniform control, fixed patchy or alternate watering) hardly influenced these growth parameters. Although also in the second experiment, the plants selectively placed their roots in the wet parts of the pot, root foraging was not as effective as in the first experiment. Possible reasons for these discrepancies are discussed as well as their implications for the application of PRD effects for crop growth.  相似文献

Photosynthesis, respiration and growth of two cultivars of carrotwith contrasting ratios of shoot: storage root weight at maturity, were compared during initiation of the storage root at 20 °C.Partition of assimilate between shoot, roots and respirationshowed no varietal differences but distribution between storageand fibrous roots was different from the time that the storageroot could be morphologically identified. For both cultivarsover the period investigated, approximately 64% of net photosynthesiswas partitioned to the shoot with 5% lost as respiration duringthe dark and 59% used in growth. Of that exported to the rootsystem (36%), 19% (of net photosynthesis) was used in growthand 17% was lost in respiration. In the cultivar with greatershoot: storage root ratio at maturity, 4.6% was allocated tothe storage root in contrast to 7.5% in the cultivar with alesser shoot: storage ratio at maturity. It is concluded thatgreater dry matter accumulation in the storage root of the lattercultivar does not result from transient differences in respiratoryloss and is not evident in shoot to total root dry matter distributionover this period. In solution culture the effect of optimal (20 °C) and supra-optimal(30 °C) root-zone temperatures on root growth and root morphologyof six potato clones (Solanum tuberosum L spp) was studied Growthwas compared with sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L) and cassava(Manihot esculenta Crantz) Significant genotypical differencesin the responses of potato roots to supra-optimal temperatureswere observed, indicating the potential for selecting heat tolerantpotato clones In both heat tolerant and heat sensitive clones, the size of the root system was reduced by supra-optimal root-zonetemperature This was principally a result of decreased numberand length of lateral roots The first symptom of heat damagewas a reduction in the rate of cell division, followed by cessationof root elongation Bending of the apical root-zone togetherwith the formation of root hairs on the inner (concave) andlateral roots on the outer (convex) side were other symptoms, these coincided with the loss of starch granules in the root-cap Potato, genotypical differences, root morphology, root growth, temperature, Solanum tuberosum L  相似文献

Root cultures of Lotus corniculatus L. cv. Leo transformed withAgrobacterium rhizogenes (C58Cl-pRi15834) grew rapidly in liquidmedium when cultured in the dark and produced large numbersof shoots when illuminated. The shoots, which could be regeneratedto produce fertile plants, were maintained in liquid mediumas shoot-organ cultures The accumulation and cellular distribution of condensed tanninswas determined during the growth of these root and shoot organcultures and in primary callus from non-transformed explants.Root and shoot cultures predominantly accumulated insolublepolymeric tannins which yielded both cyanidin and delphinidinon hydrolysis at ratios equivalent to control plants. Methanol-solublevanillin-positive compounds were isolated but no free oligomericproanthocyanidins, monomeric flavans or dihydroflavonols weredetected in these extracts. Condensed tannin accumulation waslinearly related to root growth and had a similar spatial distributionin ‘tannin’ cells in roots and leaves as comparedto control plants. Tannin-containing cells were absent frommeristematic cells of the root tip and root/shoot interface.Primary callus cultures failed to accumulate condensed tanninson media containing auxins, and exogenously supplied auxinswere found to inhibit tannin accumulation by transformed rootand shoot cultures Key words: Lotus corniculatus, Agrobacterium rhizogenes, hairy roots, condensed tannins, shoot and root cultures.  相似文献

Anatomical changes in roots of wheat seedlings (Triticum aestivumL. cv. Hatri) following oxygen deficiency in the rooting mediumwere investigated. The response of the plant to stress was testedat a very early developmental stage when the first adventitiousroots had just emerged. In order to analyze the adaptation ofdifferent roots, respiration rates of the roots 1–3 and4–n were compared with the respiration rates of the totalroot system. Oxygen deficiency was induced either by flushingnutrient solution with nitrogen or flooding of sand. In contrast to plants grown in well aerated media, both stressvariants led to a significant increase of the intercellularspace of the root cortex in seminal and first adventitious roots.Radial cell enlargement of cortical cells near the root tip, cell wall thickenings in flooded sand cultures and an increasein phloroglucinol-stainable substances were found to be furtherindicators of low oxygen supply. The roots 4–n which were promoted in growth under hypoxiashowed higher respiration rates; hence the total root respirationwas not restricted. Triticum aestivum L. cv. Two experiments were carried out to study physiological effects of vesicular-arbuseular mycorrhizal infection on Plantago major L., ssp. pleiosperma (Pilger). In the first experiment, infection by the Glomus fasciculatum (Thaxt. sensu Gerdemann) Gerdemann and Trappe increased growth, shoot to root ratio, P concentrations in both shoot and roots and total uptake of P per plant. The percentages of dry matter in both shoot and roots were lower in mycorrhizal plants.
In the second experiment different P treatments were applied to both mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal P. major plants to separate any effects of mycorrhizal infection from increased uptake of P. In addition to the effects found in the first experiment, mycorrhizal, P, and mycorrhizal x P interaction effects were found on root respiration rate and the concentration of soluble sugars in the roots. No clear effects on total dry weight, N and starch concentrations in shoot and roots and sugar concentraion in the shoot were found. Irrespective of the mycorrhizal treatment, increased P concentration in the shoot correlated with an increased shoot to root ratio and root respiration rate, and a decreased percentage dry matter and sugar concentration in the roots. However, the root respiration rate and the P concentration in the roots of mycorrhizal plants were enhanced more than expected from the increased P concentrations in the shoots of these plants.  相似文献

Despite numerous studies of the effects of mechanical stimulationon plant shoots, the response of roots to mechanical stimulationhas largely been neglected. In this study the effects of shootflexure on the morphology and mechanics of two contrasting speciesof herbaceous angiosperm, growing in a glasshouse were compared:maize (Zea mays), a monocot; and sunflower (Helianthus annuusL.) a dicot. Mechanical stimulation affected the root more than the shootcomponents. Root systems of mechanicallystressed sunflowershad a greater angle of spread and increased root number. Aswell as large morphological and weight effects, with increasesover the control of 33% in the length of rigid root and 38%in the dry weight of lateral roots, in sunflowers, there werealso mechanical effects. In both species roots of flexed plantswere more rigid, stronger and composed of stiffer material andtheir root systems also provided greater anchorage strength. In contrast, there was only a small reduction in shoot weightand shoot height in flexed plants and no effects on mechanicalproperties. There were differences in behaviour between species; maize rootmorphology responded less than that of sunflowers to mechanicalstimulation. The basal diameter of roots increased by only 8%compared with 16% in sunflowers, though the roots of both speciesshowed similar increases in material stiffness. This differenceis related to the lack of secondary thickening in the monocotscompared with the dicot sunflowers.
