The potential of four co-occurring ladybirds, Coccinella septempunctata (L.), Coccinella transversalis (F.), Cheilomenes sexmaculata (F.), and Propylea dissecta (Mulsant), as predators of the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris) was investigated. Larger ladybirds were more voracious while smaller ones had higher consumption indices and were more efficient converters of food.  相似文献

The functional response of two ladybird species, Propylea dissecta (Mulsant) and Coccinella transversalis Fabricius in combination was studied in an effort to determine the impact of two predators on the increasing density of aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover infesting leaves of bottle gourd, Lagenaria vulgaris Seringe. The ladybirds were exposed to prey density in three combinations using adult females: (i) one P. dissecta and one C. transversalis together, (ii) two P. dissecta, and (iii) two C. transversalis, for 24 h. Prey consumption increased curvilinearly with prey density in all three combinations. It was maximum when heterospecifics searched together. The prey were handled and consumed significantly faster (9.51 min) by heterospecifics in combination, followed by two C. transversalis (11.32 min) and two P. dissecta (12.52 min). The attack rate was maximum (0.00274) by heterospecifics followed by the two C. transversalis (0.00166) and two P. dissecta (0.00092). The synergistic effect on the prey consumption may possibly be due to spatial distribution of P. dissecta and C. transversalis in terms of feeding sites, with the former being negatively, and the latter being positively geotactic. Field release of two predator species in tandem is recommended for biocontrol of A. gossypii because of the potential for synergistic action by these natural enemies.  相似文献

Availability of aphid prey in habitat is often heterogeneous in space and time and its deprivation causes severe effects on life attributes of ladybird predators. Sometimes ladybirds locate high prey biomass while on certain occasions prey biomass may be either medium/low or altogether absent. Present study has been designed in view of three prey biomass conditions in nature, viz. low, medium and high, selecting Coccinella septempunctata and Coccinella transversalis as experimental ladybirds. Results revealed that consumption, developmental and reproductive attributes of both ladybirds changed in response to prey availability. On high prey biomass larvae had higher consumption and growth rates, developed faster and had low mortality, while emerging adults were large in size, had high consumption rates and utilized prey biomass maximally on production of eggs, self maintenance and survival. In contrast low prey biomass reduced chances of larval survival and emerging adults were small in size, had poor prey consumption rates, low fecundity, egg fertility and short life span. Females exhibited triangular fecundity and egg fertility functions and plateau shaped prey consumption rate function with age, indicating towards their highest reproductive performance during middle age on three prey biomasses; being highest on high prey biomass. On three prey biomasses, females had higher body biomass conversion efficiency during pre- and post-oviposition periods and higher egg biomass conversion efficiency during oviposition period; being highest on high prey biomass. Thus middle aged ladybirds reared on high prey biomass may suppress pest populations better than those reared on low/medium prey biomass.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of polyphagous predators may often reflect the integration of aggregative responses to local densities of multiple species of prey, and as such may have consequences for the indirect linkages among the prey sharing these predators. In a factorial field experiment in which we manipulated local prey densities within a field of alfalfa in Utah (USA), we tested whether aphidophagous ladybirds would aggregate not only in response to their primary aphid prey, but also in response to an abundant alternative prey, the alfalfa weevil (Hypera postica [Gyllenhal]). Native North American ladybirds (primarily Hippodamia convergens Guerin and H. quinquesignata quinquesignata [Kirby]) responded only to spatial variation in aphid density. In contrast, the introduced ladybird, Coccinella septempunctata L., aggregated also at local concentrations of the weevil late in the experiment when weevil density was high and aphid density was relatively low throughout all experimental plots. The results support the hypothesis that C. septempunctata is more responsive than are native ladybirds to the availability of alternative prey in alfalfa, which may account in part for the displacement of native ladybirds from alfalfa by the introduced species as aphid numbers have declined. The differing responses of the native and introduced ladybirds to spatial patterns of the alternative prey underscore the importance of extending the study of predator aggregation to understand better how polyphagous predators distribute themselves in response to spatial patterns of multiple species of potential prey.  相似文献

Generalist aphidophagous coccinellids have to cope with novel prey aphids in environments that are changing rapidly because of anthropogenic activity. The goldenrod aphid, Uroleucon nigrotuberculatum (Olive) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is a noxious prey, which was recently introduced into Japan. It is a major prey for the native Japanese predators Coccinella septempunctata bruckii Mulsant and Propylea japonica (Thunberg) (both Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in early summer on patches of solidago, Solidago altissima L. (Asteraceae). Prey preference of these coccinellids between this aphid and a native suitable prey aphid, Megoura crassicauda Mordvilko (Hemiptera: Aphididae), as well as their foraging behavior were studied for a better understanding of the negative impacts of the noxious novel aphid. Coccinella septempunctata initially preferred the novel prey, but later switched to the native prey, M. crassicauda; P. japonica had no preference for either prey. Feeding time of the first instars of C. septempunctata on U. nigrotuberculatum was significantly longer than that of P. japonica. The foraging bouts of fourth instars of C. septempunctata were significantly longer on U. nigrotuberculatum than on M. crassicauda, whereas only the feeding time of fourth instars of P. japonica on U. nigrotuberculatum was significantly longer than on M. crassicauda. Both coccinellids consumed less of U. nigrotuberculatum than of M. crassicauda. Thus, solidago patches infested by U. nigrotuberculatum may present an ecological trap, especially for C. septempunctata.  相似文献

Developmental time and mortality rate of Adalia bipunctata (L.) and Coccinella septempunctata L. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) were determined when feeding on five aphid species. Metopolophium dirhodum (Walker), Sitobion avenae (F.), Rhopalosiphum padi (L.), Hyalopterus pruni (Geoffr.) and Myzus cerasi F. (Homoptera: Aphididae) are widespread in Tekirda?, Turkey. Tests were carried out in a controlled environmental chamber (25±1°C temperature, 65±5% relative humidity and 16 h light:8 h dark period). Developmental times for A. bipunctata and C. septempunctata larvae varied significantly depending on species of aphid prey (P<0.05). Development time (±S.E.) varied from 17.50±0.84 to 20.83±1.60 days for C. septempunctata and 16.7±0.76 to 20.7±1.03 days for A. bipunctata. Mortality of A. bipunctata (50%) and C. septempunctata (63%) were highest on H. pruni.  相似文献

The effects of the crab spider, Misumenops tricuspidatus (Fabricius), on the larval survival of three ladybird species, Harmonia axyridis Pallas, Coccinella septempunctata L., and Propylea japonica L., in relation to aphids were investigated in the laboratory. Predation by the spider on the three ladybird species differed. All the larvae of C. septempunctata, none of H. axyridis, and an intermediate number of P. japonica were attacked and eaten by the spider. All the larvae of H. axyridis suffered mortality due to cannibalism or starvation in the treatments with and without a spider. In case of C. septempunctata, however, mortality in the early instars was significantly greater in the treatment with a spider than without a spider and no larvae developed into pupae due to predation. In the treatment without a spider, the majority of the larvae in the former treatment suffered mortality due to cannibalism or starvation, and only 13.3% of larvae developed into the adult stage. In the case of P. japonica, mortality was mainly attributed to predation in the treatment with a spider and only 26.7% became adult. In comparison, 86.7% of larvae survived to the adult stage in the treatment without a spider. In addition, in both H. axyridis and C. septempunctata, the development of young larvae was significantly slower in the presence of a spider, but this was not the case with the older larvae of H. axyridis, which indicates that the effect of the spider on larval development changed with the developmental stage of the larvae in this species. However, the spider had no significant effect on the developmental time of P. japonica larvae. Although both the spider and the ladybirds significantly affected the number of aphids, they did not have an additive effect on aphid abundance. The interactions between the spider and the ladybirds, such as intraguild predation or competition, caused them to reduce aphid population density less than the ladybirds did on their own. The effect of the spider on the larval performance of three predatory ladybirds was found to be unequal in terms of their vulnerability to predation and rate of larval development and it depended on the species and developmental stage of the ladybird.  相似文献

Life tables for two predatory ladybirds,Coccinella septempunctata andHarmonia axyridis, were constructed in two years in which prey abundance differed. The prey aphid,Aphis gossypii, was abundant on its primary host from late May to late June. Females ofH. axyridis andC. septempumctata laid their eggs during the increase and peak in aphid abundance. The oviposition period ofC. septempunctata started before and was shorter than that ofH. axyridis. In both species, intraguild predation and/or cannibalism of the egg and fourth instar stages, but rarely of other developmental stages, were observed. Fourth instar larvae ofH. axyridis had to complete their development when aphids were scarce more frequently than those ofC. septempunctata. The highest frequency of intra- and interspecific predation was of fourth instarH. axyridis larvae. In terms of intraguild predation, the larvae ofH. axyridis preyed on larvae ofC. septempunctata, but the reverse was not observed. Percentage survival from egg to adult inH. axyridis was higher than inC. septempunctata in both years, and least in both species in the year of low aphid abundance. These results suggest that prey abundance influenced the frequency of cannibalism and intraguild predation, which were important in structuring this guild of ladybirds.

Abstract Ovarian development and oviposition dynamics of two species of lady beetle, Coccinella septempunctata L. and C. transversoguttata richardsoni Brown, are examined in laboratory experiments in which pea aphids (Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris) are provided ad libitum and then removed. Both species respond to prey removal by stabilizing at lower body weights, and by laying progressively fewer and smaller eggs of reduced viability, until oviposition ceases altogether after several days of starvation. Dissections of females after prey removal reveal similar patterns of oosorption in both species. However, C. septempunctata reduces oviposition more rapidly after prey removal than does C. transversoguttata. When prey are again provided, C. septempunctata soon lay as many eggs as previously but C. transversoguttata lay fewer. Females, especially of C. septempunctata, that stop producing and resorb eggs in the absence of prey lay more eggs subsequently than do females that feed continually on prey provided ad libitum and lay eggs throughout the experiment. Thus, although both species are responsive to a rapid change in prey availability, C. septempunctata appears to be especially responsive. Rapid responses to changes in prey availability may contribute to the greater abundance and reproductive success of this introduced species relative to the native C. transversoguttata in western North American alfalfa fields that exhibit widely varying pea aphid densities. However, both species engage in oosorption as a means of reserving resources under poor prey conditions and enhancing future reproductive effort when prey conditions improve.  相似文献

The role of vision and color in close-proximity foraging behavior was investigated for four species of lady beetles: Coccinella septempunctata, Hippodamia convergens, Harmonia axyridis, and Coleomegilla maculata. The effect of light level and color cues on consumption rates varied among the four predator species. The consumption rates of these predators on the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris) was measured under light and dark conditions. C. septempunctata,H. convergens, and Ha. axyridis consumed significantly more aphids in the light than in the dark, while the consumption rate of Col. maculata was not affected by light level. Foraging ability was also measured on red and green color morphs of the pea aphid on red, green, and white backgrounds. C. septempunctata consumed significantly more of the aphid morph that contrasted with the background color, and showed no difference between morphs on the white background. H. axyridis consumed significantly more red morph aphids regardless of background. The remaining two species showed no difference in consumption rates on the two color morphs. The variation in the use of visual cues demonstrates how different species of predators can exhibit different foraging behaviors when searching for the same prey. Six aphid species, viz. Aphis craccivora, Aphis gossypii, Aphis nerii, Myzus persicae, Lipaphis erysimi and Uroleucon compositae were provided as prey to the feeding stages of Coccinella transversalis (Fabricius). All of them were found to be essential prey, however the relative prey suitability varied. All the predatory stages of C. transversalis consumed and preferred A. gossypii, the most and A. nerii, the least. Significant effect of prey quality was observed on pre‐imaginal developmental periods, wet weights and adult longevity. The complete development was shortest on A. gossypii (13.01 ± 0.18 days) and longest on A. nerii (20.51 ± 0.25 days). The total prey consumption by larva, adult male and female in their lifetime was maximum (665.30 ± 5.75, 4831.10 ± 123.54 and 5412.30 ± 94.51, respectively) on A. gossypii and minimum (434.80 ± 4.03, 802.80 ± 34.37 and 905.20 ± 52.48, respectively) on A. nerii. Immature survival, growth index and adult emergence of C. transversalis was maximum (68.33, 7.82 and 88.21%, respectively) when larval instars consumed A. gossypii and minimum (37.75, 2.18 and 60.69%, respectively) after feeding on A. nerii. Female reproduction was also prey quality dependent showing maximum reproductive performance in terms of fecundity and percentage viability, with a highest reproductive period and lowest non‐reproductive period on A. gossypii, followed by A. craccivora, L. erysimi, M. persicae, U. compositae and A. nerii. Regression analysis revealed a positive correlation between: (1) daily prey consumption and relative growth rate, (2) adult weight and developmental rate, (3) weights of adult male and female, and (4) female longevity and fecundity.  相似文献

Aphidophagous coccinellid larvae have a wide range of potential prey in alfalfa and during times of low aphid abundance, larvae may supplement their diet with alternative prey. To understand the effects of the seasonal aphid availability on alternative prey use, an order-specific monoclonal antibody, DrosW-VI-B8, was used to examine the frequency of dipteran predation by these important natural enemies. Over 400 larvae were hand-collected from alfalfa and, in parallel, arthropod abundance was recorded. Harmonia axyridis and Coccinella septempunctata larvae were abundant early in the season when aphid populations were at their peak and Coleomegilla maculata larvae were collected later in the season when potato leafhoppers were abundant in the alfalfa. A relatively low proportion of field-collected H. axyridis, C. septempunctata, and C. maculata tested positive for dipteran proteins throughout the season. Similar to prior studies examining stage differences in coccinellid food breadth, older instars tested positive for dipteran proteins (3rd instar, 6% positive; 4th instar, 7% positive) but no early instars screened positive. This study provides a valuable insight into the trophic linkages that exist between coccinellid larvae and Diptera.  相似文献

Understanding the mechanisms that result in the success of introduced species will contribute to predicting future invasions and managing invaded systems. We examined interactions between larvae of two predatory ladybird species recently introduced to North America, Coccinella septempunctata (CS) and Harmonia axyridis (HA), and two indigenous ladybirds, Coccinella transversoguttata (CT) and Hippodamia convergens (HC). By pairing young and old larvae in the laboratory at low and high levels of aphid availability, we assessed the degree of asymmetry in intraguild predation (IGP), the strength of competitive effects on growth and development of larvae escaping predation, and the nature of attack and escape behavior among the species. Interactions were generally asymmetric, with larvae of introduced species acting most frequently as intraguild predators and larvae of indigenous species serving most frequently as intraguild prey (the two Coccinella spp., however, preyed on each other at similar rates). Because they were especially aggressive and because other larvae were least successful in escaping their attacks, larvae of HA had stronger negative effects on larvae of the two indigenous species than did larvae of CS. Such negative effects, expressed most strongly when aphid availability was low, were especially adverse for the smaller of the two indigenous species, HC. In general, older larvae interacted with each other more strongly than young larvae did, and older larvae had especially strong negative effects on young larvae when interactions occurred between age classes. Our results suggest that HA more than CS may represent a threat to indigenous ladybirds as an intraguild predator, and that IGP in turn may play a stronger role for HA than for C. septempunctata in promoting the successful invasion of North America.  相似文献

Coccinella magnifica is an obligate associate of Formica rufa-group ants. The congener Coccinella septempunctata can serve as a model for its nonmyrmecophilous ancestor. Formica rufa behavior toward these two ladybirds, and their behavior, was compared. Although C. magnifica was rarely attacked on ant trails, it was usually attacked on tended aphid colonies. Coccinella septempunctata was more readily attacked. The two ladybirds' behavior was similar on trails, but C. magnifica used more defense and C. septempunctata more rapid escape behavior on aphid colonies. Only C. magnifica fed upon tended aphids. Chemical adaptation to overcome ant aggression probably exists in C. magnifica, but it possesses almost no novel behaviors to counter ant aggression. Instead, modifications have occurred in the expression of behaviors present in C. septempunctata.  相似文献

Preimaginal development, mortality, aphid consumption rate, and size and weight upon reaching the adult stage of the aphidophagous coccinellids Hippodamia convergens Guérin-Méneville and Coccinella septempunctata L. collected from Karditsa, central Greece, were examined at four constant temperatures (14, 17, 20 and 23 °C) and L16:D8. The coccinellids fed on the tobacco aphid, Myzus persicae nicotianae Blackman. Egg, larval and pupal mortality was highest at 14 °C reaching 85.0, 73.8 and 29.4% in H. convergens and 49.3, 75.4 and 58.8% in C. septempunctata, respectively. Total preimaginal development ranged from 57.2 to 70.4 days at 14 °C, and to 16.9 and 22.1 days at 23 °C in H. convergens and C. septempunctata, respectively. Heavier and larger adults of H. convergens were obtained at 17 and 20 ° C. In C. septempunctata temperature did not affect adult weight while the lowest size was observed at 14 and 17 °C. Day-degrees requirements for preimaginal development in H. corvengens were 212.9 above a developmental threshold of 11.0 °C. The corresponding values for C. septempunctata were 281.5 and 10.7 °C. In H. convergens total and daily aphid consumption ranged from 46.8 aphids at 14 °C to 85.0 aphids at 23 °C and from 1.5 aphids at 14 °C to 9.2 aphids at 23 °C, respectively. The corresponding values for C. septempunctata were 112.0 and 2.7 at 14 °C and 157.7 and 12.4 at 23 °C. The results show the high potential of both predators as biological control agents against the tobacco aphid. The knowledge obtained could be essential for their appropriate use and for the improvement of mass rearing systems.  相似文献

Assessment of patch quality by ladybirds: role of larval tracks   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Gravid females of the two-spot ladybird, Adalia bipunctata (L.), were deterred from ovipositing when kept in petri dishes that had previously contained conspecific larvae but not conspecific adults, or the larvae of another two species of ladybird, Adalia decempunctata (L.) and Coccinella septempunctata L. The deterrent effect was density dependent and mediated via a chloroform-soluble contact pheromone present in the larval tracks. Similarly, gravid females of C. septempunctata were deterred from ovipositing by conspecific larval tracks and chloroform extracts of these tracks, but not by the tracks or extracts of tracks of A. bipunctata larvae. That is, in ladybirds the larvae produce a species-specific oviposition-deterring pheromone. In the field, the incidence of egg cannibalism in ladybirds increases very rapidly with the density of conspecific eggs or larvae per unit area. Thus, in responding to the species specific oviposition deterring pheromone female ladybirds reduce the risk of their eggs being eaten and spread their offspring more equally between patches. The establishment, spread and increase of the invasive coccinellid Harmonia axyridis Pallas in North America and Britain have coincided with declines in native ladybirds. In Britain, this pattern was predicted soon after H. axyridis was first recorded. However, predictions of the impact that H. axyridis may have on the parasites, parasitoids and pathogens of native coccinellids have been less certain, largely because of uncertainty over whether H. axyridis would become an alternate host for such agents. Dinocampus coccinellae (Schrank) is a braconid parasitoid of ladybirds of the sub-family Coccinellinae. In Japan, this wasp uses both Coccinella septempunctata brucki Mulsant and H. axyridis as hosts, but successfully parasitizes a higher proportion of the former species. Data are here presented that indicate the same is true in Britain, but to a greater extent. This study investigates the interactions of D. coccinellae with C. septempunctata L. and H. axyridis from Japan and Britain. We show that coccinellid activity affects encounter rates with the wasp, with H. axyridis being more active than C. septempunctata in the tests. Escalation rates from investigation to ovipositional attack were higher for C. septempunctata than H. axyridis for both Japanese and British wasps. Wasp emergence was higher, relative to ovipositional attack, from C. septempunctata than from H. axyridis. Wasps did not discriminate between Japanese and British ladybirds of the same species. British wasp eclosion rates were higher from Japanese than from British H. axyridis. We consider both the effect D. coccinellae may have on H. axyridis population demography, and the effect H. axyridis may have on D. coccinellae in Europe.  相似文献

Interference and competition betweenChrysoperla carnea (Stephens) andCoccinella septempunctata L. was investigated in the absence and presence of aphid prey. When larvae of similar vigour encountered each other,C. carnea larvae were superior toC. septempunctata. Otherwise the larger of 2 individuals always killed the smaller. In the absence of preyC. carnea adults were attacked by their own 2nd and 3rd instar larvae as well as by 3rd instar larvae ofC. septempunctata. In all encounters the adults ofC. septempunctata were superior. Since the eggs ofC. carnea are protected to some extent by being on egg stalks, they were less susceptible to cannibalism and predation thanC. septempunctata eggs which are deposited in batches directly on plant leaves. In the presence of prey cannibalism and predation were reduced, especially between larvae. Only eggs and 1st instar larvae were endangered. In the present experimentsC. carnea showed a slight superiority overc. septempunctata. Paper presented at the 17th International Congress of Entomology held in August 20–26 1984 in Hamburg, F.R. Laboratory study of cannibalism and interspecific predation in ladybirds   总被引:11,自引:1,他引:10
Abstract.
  • 1 In the absence of aphids, adult females of Adalia bipunctata (L.) showed a greater reluctance to eat eggs than males.
  • 2 Eggs and young larvae were more vulnerable to cannibalism than older larvae and starved larvae were more vulnerable than well-fed larvae.
  • 3 Both egg and larval cannibalism is inversely related to the abundance of aphids.
  • 4 Eggs are a better food, in terms of larval growth and survival, than aphids.
  • 5 In the absence of aphids interspecific predation occurred, but not equally, between the coccinellids A.bipunctata, A.decempunctata (L.), Coccinella septempunctata L. and C.undecempunctata L.
  • 6 Larvae and adults of A. bipunctata and C.septempunctata were reluctant to eat conspecific eggs painted with a water extract of the other species' eggs and larvae of C. septempunctata were more likely to die after eating a few eggs of A.bipunctata than vice versa.
  • 7 These results indicate that cannibalism occurs mainly when aphid prey is scarce and is adaptive in that it improves the chances of survival, and coccinellids, to varying degrees, are defended against interspecific predation.
