A case of retroperitoneal fibrosis with bilateral ureteral obstruction in association with Riedel''s struma of the thyroid is reported. There has been a definite increase in incidence of retroperitoneal fibrosis, but with prompt recognition and adequate treatment the mortality rate has been decreased from the original 14%. The association of Riedel''s struma with retroperitoneal fibrosis has been noted in the past and its association with sclerosing cholangitis has also been mentioned. It is not known whether Riedel''s thyroiditis originates in the thyroid gland and spreads or whether true thyroiditis is part of a generalized process. The temporal relationship of thyroiditis and retroperitoneal fibrosis suggests an extension of fibrosis from the thyroid, but one cannot be sure which condition occurred first. Whatever the cause, the treatment remains the same as for retroperitoneal fibrosis from other causes. 相似文献

Three West-Indian black siblings with the sickle cell trait developed retroperitoneal fibrosis, a previously unreported association. Other well known renal manifestations associated with the sickle cell trait were also present in some of these cases and included renal medullary necrosis and spontaneous hematuria. It is postulated that the sickling of the erythrocytes in the periureteral vessels resulted in thrombosis, ischemia, reactive scarring and progressive fibrosis indistinguishable from the known histological picture of retroperitoneal fibrosis. The finding of fibrin thrombi in the small veins of the fibrotic tissue of one of these patients would support this explanation. 相似文献

Cystic fibrosis patients are exceptionally prone to colonisation by a narrow spectrum of pathogenic bacteria. Since pulmonary infection presently, and for the foreseeable future, plays such a major role in CF lung disease, we review the microbes that are classically associated with CF and the virulence, inflammatory potential and resistance mechanisms which contribute to the reduction in life expectancy for colonised CF patients. 相似文献

Identification of mutations causing cystic fibrosis (CF) in the Turkish population is essential for assessment of the molecular basis of CF in Turkey and the development of strategies for prenatal diagnosis and genetic counseling. Here, we present an updated report of mutations found in the Turkish CF population from an extensive screening study of the entire coding region, including exon-intron boundaries and the promoter region. Cases for which mutations could not be identified were also screened for previously defined large alterations and (TG)mTn-M470V loci. This study revealed a total of 27 different mutations accounting for almost 60% of disease genes in the Turkish population. In this study, we also identified the haplotypes associated with 17 mutations and those associated with unknown mutations. The mutation spectrum of CF in Turkey and its associated haplotypes indicated the presence of a major Mediterranean component in the contemporary Turkish population. 相似文献

Background
Adrenomedullin (AM), a 52-amino acid ringed-structure peptide with C-terminal amidation, was originally isolated from human pheochromocytoma. AM are widely distributed in various tissues and acts as a local vasoactive hormone in various conditions.Methods
In the present study, we investigated the efficacy of AM on the animal model of bleomycin (BLM)-induced lung injury. Mice were subjected to intratracheal administration of BLM and were assigned to receive AM daily by an intraperitoneal injection of 200 ngr/kg.Results and Discussion
Myeloperoxidase activity, lung histology, immunohistochemical analyses for cytokines and adhesion molecules expression, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), nitrotyrosine, and poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) were performed one week after fibrosis induction. Lung histology and transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) were performed 14 and 21 days after treatments. After bleomycin administration, AM-treated mice exhibited a reduced degree of lung damage and inflammation compared with BLM-treated mice, as shown by the reduction of (1) myeloperoxidase activity (MPO), (2) cytokines and adhesion molecules expression, (3) nitric oxide synthase expression, (4) the nitration of tyrosine residues, (5) poly (ADP-ribose) (PAR) formation, a product of the nuclear enzyme poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) (6) transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) (7)and the degree of lung injury.Conclusions
Our results indicate that AM administration is able to prevent bleomycin induced lung injury through the down regulation of proinflammatory factors. 相似文献18.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), characterized by irreversible scarring and progressive destruction of the lung tissue, is one of the most common types of idiopathic interstitial pneumonia worldwide. However, there are no reliable candidates for curative therapies. Hence, elucidation of the mechanisms of IPF genesis and exploration of potential biomarkers and prognostic indicators are essential for accurate diagnosis and treatment of IPF. Recently, efficient microarray and bioinformatics analyses have promoted an understanding of the molecular mechanisms of disease occurrence and development, which is necessary to explore genetic alternations and identify potential diagnostic biomarkers. However, high false-positive rates results have been observed based on single microarray datasets. In the current study, we performed a comprehensive analysis of the differential expression, biological functions, and interactions of IPF-related genes. Three publicly available microarray datasets including 54 IPF samples and 34 normal samples were integrated by performing gene set enrichment analysis and analyzing differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Our results identified 350 DEGs genetically associated with IPF. Gene ontology analyses revealed that the changes in the modules were mostly enriched in the positive regulation of smooth muscle cell proliferation, positive regulation of inflammatory responses, and the extracellular space. Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes enrichment analysis of DEGs revealed that IPF involves the TNF signaling pathway, NOD-like receptor signaling pathway, and PPAR signaling pathway. To identify key genes related to IPF in the protein-protein interaction network, 20 hub genes were screened out with highest scores. Multiple etiologies of liver injury are associated with fibrosis in which the key event is the activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs). Although microRNAs (miRNAs) are reportedly involved in fibrogenesis, the complete array of miRNA signatures associated with the disease has yet to be elucidated. Here, deep sequencing analysis revealed that compared to controls, 80 miRNAs were upregulated and 21 miRNAs were downregulated significantly in the thioacetamide (TAA)-induced mouse fibrotic liver. Interestingly, 58 of the upregulated miRNAs were localized to an oncogenic miRNA megacluster upregulated in liver cancer. Differential expression of some of the TAA-responsive miRNAs was confirmed, and their human orthologs were similarly deregulated in TGF-β1-activated HSCs. Moreover, a functional analysis of the experimentally validated high-confidence miRNA targets revealed significant enrichment for the GO terms and KEGG pathways involved in HSC activation and liver fibrogenesis.
